KEEPING THE IDENTITIES OF HERITAGE :
JALAN BESAR V.S. CHULIA STREET
INTRODUCTION This comparative analysis is focused on the question of methods and suggestions to maintain the identity of a heritage site, without sacrificing the gist and sentiments in the process of development.
A comparison is made between two heritage sites, Jalan Besar in Klang and Chulia Street in Georgetown to explore what conservation works have been done on the sites and whether the identity of the sites have been successfully preserved.
The buildings along Jalan Besar have gone through different styles of design upon each modification or addition that disregards the traditional form of the shophouses. The distinct style and facade of the buildings are combined within the row of shophouses as a single continuous form that may be chaotic but is linked through function.

HISTORY IN CONTEXT
TOWN PLANNING OF CHULIA STREET
Jalan Besar used to be a place dominated by locals. As the businesses were affected by the economy and transport issues, many shophouses were abandoned. Local residents migrate to residential areas located far away from this area where foreign workers occupied the area by living at the commercial area and works in the city.
Heritage is not boring and just build back what is already there. In Penang, conservation is our town development, how is it plan was very important and crucial in terms of traffic controlling, community of business, LRT future plans and etc. Especially in Penang, there is a very limited place to develop. Take an example Singapore, it is so successful is because they planned their town before they start ultilizing their limited land. Penang, a place rich of culture it a tool for us to ultilise further development into a better city to serve people in it.
FADING IDENTITY OF JALAN BESAR DISAPPROPRIATE SKYLINE Restrictions of height and form such as regulations may be put in place to prevent “visual and skyline pollution” in this site.
DILAPIDATION Reconstruction is necessary for its survival and it reveals the cultural significance of the place as a whole.

FACADE PLANNING Façade planning apart from the community are the most important thing in order to keep the identities of the place. It is the first impression given to users visiting it and also people who are using it. Continuity of the façade and architectural style brings order to the place and a similar identities to each and everyone.
Salt attack is a significant problem to an island based heritage city, it caused corrosion not only to metal it also will endanger the structure integrity as well, the salt will crystalize inside the material as time pass and caused expansion on the pores of concrete. Salt-attack can occur on a range of different including all masonry units, stone pavers and segmental pavers. While these materials are often used for their aesthetic appeal and durability, they unfortunately are not immune to getting salt-attack. The solution is to use lime plaster to seal and prevent the salt content soak into the building.
SALT ATTACK PROBLEM DISCONTINUITY OF FACADE DESIGN The levels of each building on the road of Jalan Besar are different and distinct to each facade. There is no standard level of high between floors. This results in a chaotic relationship between building facade, the level decreases, increases and breaks on some segments of buildings.

The shophouses underwent complete renovation and refurbish to suit commercial usage without keeping the original identity.
The mixed architectural styles of facade within one street had breaks the continuity feeling towards the heritage building.
