s I paid the shop assistant for my newspaper and glanced through the street facing shop window behind him, the Worlds biggest HGV parked up a little too close for comfort behind the Porsche Panamera S. A tinge of anxiety set in, this was Porsche’s car not mine – and when the lorry driver came into the shop he stared at me directly for longer than seemed comfortable. I could sense that a situation was going ‘to develop’. I thus turned to face him and soon realised the long stare was associated with the fact that I was holding the Porsche keys.

He was a big burly chap with an unpredictable look about him – i.e. he could be either friend or foe; I was about to find out which from whatever he was just about to say to me. “Excuse me mate”, says the man with the big HGV - “but is that the latest Porsche you’ve got out there?” Friend, not Foe then. “Yes”, I replied, – in an equally friendly tone – “What do you think to it?”

I asked. “It’s brilliant, love it!”, he said, “Is it any good?” “Yes.” I replied, “- a bit of a breakaway from tradition, but as with all things Porsche it’s tough, well made, safe, and fast.” “Yes, I thought so”, said the man with the big HGV, “just what you expect from Porsche”. I went on to explain to my new ‘friend’ (thank God), that I had a small table and a couple of chairs in the boot of the car only yesterday. His jaw dropped! What?! First he couldn’t understand how anyone would dare put a table and chairs ‘in a Porsche’ and boast such an insult to the brand in public, and two, he was impressed that this crème de la crème luxury express can double up as a load lugger. I apologised to him for the former and praised the Panamera for the latter. And so Mr Truck Driver and I became friends. CLASSY In fact you make a lot of admiring new friends when you

We opted on test for the popular entry level Panamera S –priced from £72,266; it’ll rise to £77,269 for the all-wheel driven Panamera 4S and £95,298 for the top of the range Panamera Turbo - all share the big 4.8 litre V8, our entry level version generating some 400 bhp (as does the 4S) and 7 speed automatic transmission. ON THE ROAD There are a range of new technical advances on the car, not least Porches PDK 7 speed double clutch system ensuring smoother changes and more economical and progressive performance. It certainly shows in the drive; it is smooth, purposeful, and only interrupted by a slight change in engine tone. The changes come in early, and you’ll be zipping through at least the first four gears much quicker than you’d think in a car with this level of performance – it works though, and should the throttle sense a keen right foot, it will work with your enthusiasm and hold the gear to deliver the performance you want. Should you choose to push the gear lever to the left for manual sequential shift, or use the steering mounted paddle shift option to achieve the same, you will also be encouraged to take those shifts early but when you do, a glance at the rev

There is plenty of Dr Jekyll under the bonnet for a civilised drive, but Mr Hyde is always ready and waiting... ENVIRONMENTALLY YOURS But even Porsches must take account of the environment, and the automatic engine cutting stop-start system in the Panamera works a treat. You stop the car at the lights or in a traffic queue, keep your foot on the brake, and the engine cuts out. As soon as you lift off the brake the engine starts again and you’re off. Brilliant, and the first on an auto transmission. SO COOL Whilst £70,000 plus is undoubtedly a lot of money – the Panamera S is very good value in this segment – you’ll develop that sense of value with familiarity, for the longer you live with the car the more you will learn of its endless technology – such as the assisted braking which holds the car steady on an incline while you transfer from brake to throttle, to the fact that the car will actually brake for you when parking, if it senses that you’re likely to hit the hazard or vehicle in front or behind. So, so, cool. With rear seats down you have Ford Mondeo spaciousness; with them up, three passengers can experience true Porsche performance. And that of course, is not delivered in the raw fashion of a 911 – but in the svelte style of the Panamera; progressive, deep, mated to a subdued growl, powerful, yet engaging and sporting. Behind the wheel you feel like you’re driving a Porsche – not a luxury saloon, a Porsche. It sits firm, the steering is linear to your input, and whilst the Panamera feels like a ‘big’ car, the weight works with the driver with little pitch and roll when pushed hard. Grand Plage in the morning in Saint Malo, France

ur entry to Brittany was via Saint Malo. If, like me, you haven’t been to Brittany since you were a child, here are a few things about it that you may have forgotten, or didn’t know.

O

Saint Malo, is situated at the mouth of the Rance River. Because of the exceptional position of the estuary and the tide filling and emptying it twice a day, the world’s first tidal power station was built here in the 1960’s. In case you want to know, during the winter and summer equinoxes the amplitude (ie…largeness, abundance, width and splendour..) can bring tides reaching an astonishing 13.5 metres. Annually this produces nearly 600 million kWh, which represents a town of 300,000 inhabitants. As well as being a major port for shipping crossings, Saint Malo is also a town exploding with history, old world charm and character. Nowadays the shipping lanes go to

Portsmouth, Weymouth, Guernsey, Jersey and Poole, but in the 17th and 18th Centuries thanks to seafarers and merchant ship owners, the destinations were the East Indies, China, Africa and the Americas. The cargo ships are long gone and now, glamorous yachts spangle the marina and there are dozens of exciting restaurants to fatten you up with their exceptional cuisine. If you enjoy oysters, then Cancale, which is a nearby village, is famous for them and apparently the locals confirm their reputation. There’s a small hotel in the town centre, Hotel de la Cite and my companions and I were guests for the night. It was comfortably old fashioned. After going out for a delicious dinner (three types of fish baked in a small dish with vegetables in beurre blanc sauce) at the tiny and modest, L’entre Deux Verres, we retired. The classic, long, shuttered windows of my bedroom opened on to a typical back street and the sounds of late night

chattering and distant motorcycle departures in the otherwise silent, late September night, finally drifted away as I also finally drifted away. It is just a short boat ride to up-market, stylish Dinard. Old fashioned yet up-to-date at the same time, this lovely town has it all. Easy-on-the-eye scenery, sandy beaches, aquarium, museum and, you’ll be relieved to hear, a golf course. The indoor fruit and vegetable market is just beautiful and breathing in and looking saturates your senses with the fresh produce. It over-flows with luscious, colourful, mouthwatering edibles. The main beach and the surrounding buildings made me think of Swanage or Broadstairs. During July and August the beach is lined with blue and white contraptions in which you can change into your swimmers, the Victorians would have called them ‘bathing

machines’. We had lunch in, yet another, under-stated but very good restaurant called Le Petit Port, which is right on the edge of the water. We crammed ourselves full of creative and mouth watering offerings before mounting our push bikes (from Breiz Cycles) and heading off on a dedicated cycle trail, which is part of a network being set up across the region. My local gym, Life Line, very kindly gave me some padded, black lycra, Max Wall style leggings, mmm, (Rohnisch) to ease my discomfort. We made our way, with the help of the sweet Maude Le

Houerou, to Dinan. The ride is 25 kilometers through woodland and fields. It is intensely rural and as we cycled along the tree lined avenues, I could imagine smocked peasants from the past, toting sickles and scythes for the late harvest. We weaved occasionally through gaps in the “kissing” style gates, then back on to the road for a winding, wind-in-your-hair descent down to the river, where we continued along its course until we reached the town. The weather was warm and the path was busy with the good people of Brittany out enjoying this lovely area. It was a beautiful day and we were having such a good time, (that was before I fell off my bike) I couldn’t stop myself from calling out, “bonjour”, to them and there were plenty of times when they called out the greeting first. Just when we thought it was all over and wanted to give our aching bottoms a rub, we realized we needed to push our trusty steeds up a very steep, long, winding and heavily cobbled street of ‘rue du Petit Fort’ (or was it ’rue du Jerzual’?) to reach the top of the town. My lightly carbonized lungs didn’t mind, but my legs and arms did. I told myself it wouldn’t be long before I could ease in to a hot, restoring bath and shortly after we checked in to Hotel D’Avaugour at 1 place du Champ, I did. The bedrooms are quaint and individually decorated and one of our group thought there might be a ‘gaust’ in hers, but by the morning it had spookily disappeared. The name Dinan is taken from two Celtic words, “Dunos” (colline) and “Ahna” (Living protector and dead guardian goddess).This lovely medieval citadel which has 13th Century ramparts and 15th Century half-timbered houses, has “place des Cordeliers” and “place des Merciers” at it’s epicentre. The best view of the castle and fortifications is from the Rance River. Dinan is a delightful town to wander around

with it’s shops, cafes and galleries. If you have a weakness for crepes, Les Gavottes is famous for them. They make selections that are crispy, flavoured with orange, lemon, milk or dark chocolate and then rolled up in golden paper and had as snacks with coffee or mousse. While we were there we went inside the absolutely beautiful church of St. Sauveur with it’s Romanesque porch dating from 12th century. Inside the crypt lies the heart of a 14th Century Breton knight, Bertrand du Guesclin, who, for reasons known only to himself, didn’t like the English. I took several photographs and nobody tried to stop me, which is a first. Another good dinner after church and this time baby’ lapin’ was on the menu. I couldn’t, but the others did, sniff.

In French hotels if you want a boiled ‘oeuf ’ for breakfast, you select the one you like best and then put it in to the hot water provided and cook it for the desired time. This is all very well if someone has told you what is expected. We, on the other hand hadn’t heard of this novel way of cooking and so it was a source of surprise to Greg, our leader, and of mirth to the rest of us when he dug in to it only to have it explode rawly (I made that word up) in front of him. Of course we didn’t let him forget it for the rest of the trip. Breakfast was followed by the drive to Redon where we had chartered a house boat (le Bus) to take us to Gacilly along the Nantes to Brest Canal and then the Oust River. Our captain was the very French, Yves Henaff who steered us carefully and manfully to La Grange Aux Moines, where we stopped for an enormous and wonderful picnic in the woods. It wasn’t the teddy bears that provided this feast, but Famille Clodic and it was really good. The food was enhanced by the local wine and cider and we devoured it. We then re-boarded, chugged dreamily along to La Gacilly and moored up to another vessel (le Boat). Saving the best till last, we were booked in to the brand new, Eco Hotel Spa Yves Rocher, La Gree des Landes. Yves Rocher is famous for being the French entrepreneur who has been pioneering for a greener tomorrow. His foundation promotes ecocitizenship and supports the initiatives of men and women who are committed to environmental awareness. This is a very special hotel that has been created with great care to be in close contact with it’s natural surroundings. There are 29 rooms, more like smart, modern cabins really, decorated in natural colours. They are comfortable and clean with panoramic views. low energy light bulbs, wind turbines, solar panels and wood boilers. Book yourself in for invigorating or relaxing spa treatments and a dip in the indoor infinity pool, then treat yourself to his organic herbal potions to keep you feeling in tip top condition. The dinner was absolutely divine and prepared by Gill (make it sound soft and Frenchy when you say it) who takes his cooking very seriously. All the ingredients are either grown in the garden outside or sourced locally and are of the highest quality. I had a little wander around the vegetable plot and was enchanted by the rows of glass cloches and displays of vegetables. The aubergine were magnificent, enormous with that deep purple satiny gleam and different types and colours of tomatoes growing up artistic twisty obelisks. Before dinner we had time to walk in to the town to look at the annual, absolutely brilliant outdoor photo exhibition. The pictures were enormous and all around the town. As this was to be our last night together as a group, we had some wine after dinner outside on the little terrace of one of our rooms. We turned the lights out and were spell bound by the firmament. The deep, dark night enhanced the milky way, we could see forever, including four shooting stars. That’s when you realize that you are such a tiny part (albeit important) of the universe. Get a grip. We had an early wake-up call and after breakfast set off to the Office de Tourisme to collect more push bikes to cycle along the canal in Malestroit. The day was perfectly still and the mist was lying over the water. There were many “Kodak moments” and we took

advantage of them. I recall we were playing a ridiculous word game we had made up, to do with fish and were laughing so much we nearly collided and ended up swimming instead. Eventually, we returned our mounts to their owner, had a quick wander around this charming town and sat down at Restaurant Le Grain de Sel. Of course it was wonderful. After two beautiful courses we deserted the desserts and talked ourselves in to have yet more of the irresistible ‘fromage’. Time was running out. This was a very good trip, really well organized.
