About the Cover The Lawrence Academy Schoolhouse Rotunda, and its enduring inlaid image of Lawrence Academy’s school seal, stands as a beacon of our community’s resilience and is as relevant today as it was when it was placed there in 1957 following the Schoolhouse fire in 1956 and its reconstruction. Then and now, Lawrence Academy faced an extraordinarily challenging year, and both times, the community came together to move forward. We celebrate Omnibus Lucet as the cover of this year’s Annual Report and gratefully acknowledge members of our community for their continued leadership and resilience this past year.

From the Head of School – Dan Scheibe –

It has always seemed incongruous to the educator in me that the academic year and the fiscal year are so aligned. On or about July 1, one starts navigating the new year — a year whose experience and impact will extend right up to about the next June 30. In that context, the Annual Report documents all that the school’s resources have achieved over an academic year and the fiscal year that shadows it, and by all measures, this year has been a heroic success. Considering the 2020-2021 school year and fiscal year, both were clearly operating under the most unusual and unpredictable stressors imaginable due to the COVID-19 pandemic. And yet, the experience and access we delivered through our resources expressed fundamentally consistent and reliable things about Lawrence Academy’s identity and strength. We are a school that finds value in meaningful connection and purposeful engagement. Two particular and affiliated areas of success this past year are worth highlighting: the degree of presence we were able to achieve with our students, despite all obstacles, and the increased contact with alumni we were likewise able to achieve in complex and challenging circumstances. Our students were in person in school and meaningfully engaged and connected as much or more than any student in any peer institution. The person-to-person care of our faculty and staff made it possible. We were united in our

mission to recognize, inspire, support, and empower students more than ever before and the results showed. Likewise, our alumni body had more opportunities for meaningful engagement and connection than ever before, and the results showed both in attendance and significantly increased new donor participation in the LA Fund. Whether for Alumni Spotlights, holiday gatherings, career panels, or Reunion events, our alumni — just like our students and faculty — showed up in a big way. This passion and success is a tribute to Lawrence Academy’s core identity: a place that dedicates its full resources to the growth and well-being of its students. This is the legacy that binds the COVID-tested Class of 2021 to the wide range of experiences captured in previous generations of LA graduates. This is why we all want to show up for LA. Our loyalty flows from this sense of appreciation for all a school can do for a student — whether through the normal growth pangs of adolescence or through the shared crisis of a global pandemic. Against all odds, we captured success this year in both the daily life of individual growth and the long-term institutional growth of the school. We thank you for that extraordinary, noble, and worthy support.

Why We Give Harry managed to find a hand grenade which he believed to be a “dud.” He brought it home and it exploded in his right hand. Fortunately, it hurt no one else, but his hand was destroyed, shrapnel was embedded in his body, and he lost sight in his right eye. Harry was sent to Valley Forge Army Hospital near Philadelphia, which specialized at the time in the rapidly growing field of plastic surgery. As an officer’s son, he shared quarters with wounded officers, mostly burn cases, from the Western Front. A year of many reconstructive operations and convalescences ensued.

Harry Van Tuyl ’48

Mrs. Alice Van Tuyl, widow of Harry Van Tuyl ’48, continues to give to LA in memory of her husband. She shared her reasons with us in a recent note: In 1944, at the age of 14, Harry was living at Fort Devens, Massachusetts, where his father was stationed as an Army officer. World War II was at its height, and Fort Devens was a big, sprawling base full of troops, weapons, and a sizeable contingent of German and Italian POWs. Somehow, on his way home from school,

In the meantime, Harry’s parents, who had heard of Lawrence Academy while at Fort Devens, had been transferred to Fort Benning, Georgia. In the hope that Harry could make up for lost time and continue his education, they applied for his admission to Lawrence, and he was accepted. From the moment of his arrival there, he was treated with kindness and made to feel part of the school. Lawrence’s small classes and individual instruction, and its emphasis on the value of liberal arts, were just what he needed. He became a lifelong reader, and, as his health improved, learned to ski and also became an active member of the camera club. Perhaps equally importantly, some of the friendships Harry made at Lawrence endured for the rest of his life. At a critical time, Lawrence gave Harry not only education, but stability and a sense of belonging that he sorely needed. He was forever grateful to the school. When he retired to Vermont after a government career, Harry was delighted to attend Lawrence reunions. For a time we also went to the yearly meetings of the board of visitors, where we were able to attend classes of our choice and hear the headmaster’s latest word. Lawrence continued to be an important part of Harry’s life until his death in 2016.

CONWAY ENDOWMENT FUND FOR WINTERIM SCHOLARSHIPS Nearly 20 years after she graduated from Lawrence Academy, Molly Conway ’03 still recalls her Winterim trips fondly. According to her mother, Ann Conway P’98, ’01, ’03, her oldest son, Jay Conway ’98, was recently telling his wife about his Winterim memories, too.

And so, the year their middle child — son Sean Conway ’01 — graduated from Lawrence, the Conways established the Conway Endowment Fund for Winterim Scholarships. For 20 school years now, the fund has offered full Winterim scholarships to deserving students.

Ann, a former Lawrence Academy trustee, and her husband Jim saw early on in their family’s time at LA how much off-campus and out-of-state Winterim experiences taught their three children. They also noticed that the cost of Winterim trips like those their kids took — kayaking on the Rio Grande, sailing in Europe and at Vancouver Island — prohibited some students from taking advantage of those opportunities.

“I think the whole concept of Winterim — to take a break from the typical school schedule to focus on one area, and to have more actual hands-on experience with it … That in itself, I think, is a really good concept,” Ann reflects, “but the opportunity to travel to a different part of this country or the world to experience something in depth by actually experiencing it — not necessarily reading about it and talking about it and writing about it — I just think widens a student’s awareness and provides opportunities to open doors for them in terms of where their future will bring them.”

“It was pretty clear to us that the students who were at LA on financial aid pretty much didn’t get the same opportunity to take a trip off campus, to some other part of the world, and have some other kind of really interesting experience,” Ann explains. “Jim has always been about trying to focus our philanthropy on need. He said, ’Clearly these students at LA have a need that isn’t being met, and I think we should do something about it.’”

As Winterim celebrates its 50th anniversary during the 2021-2022 school year, the Conways are hopeful that their fund can help Lawrence Academy provide the funding needed for every single student to take one Winterim trip during their time on campus. “I have trust and faith that LA will grow and prosper and innovate as they always have,” Ann says.

Alumni Trustee New Donor Challenge From Dec. 1, 2020 through June 30, 2021, the Alumni Trustee new donor challenge invited new and lapsed alumni donors to “jump back in” and make a gift to Lawrence Academy. To incentivize the achievement of 20 percent alumni participation, the alumni trustees pledged an additional $25,000 directed to financial aid if 520 lapsed alumni donors made gifts of $17.93 or more. We acknowledge with gratitude the continued generosity of our alumni trustees and the 338 alumni (60 percent of our goal) who chose to “jump back in” and helped LA achieve a record-breaking year. Alumni Giving by Class Lawrence Academy relies on its alumni for philanthropic support to advance the mission of the school and provide LA’s current and future students with the resources to experience the best education possible. Endowment Funds The Lawrence Academy Endowment helps to secure the long-term financial sustainability of the school and the draw on those funds typically provides 6 percent of the school’s annual operating budget. In contrast to the LA Fund, endowment funds are permanently established and their annual growth provides revenue to LA in perpetuity. Each year, the Lawrence Academy Board of Trustees approves a 4 percent withdrawal against the value of the endowment and directs that money to the school’s operating budget. With some funds established more than a century ago, we wish to gratefully acknowledge alumni, parents, grandparents, faculty, staff, and friends who have created — and continue to support — a lasting legacy honoring their relationship with Lawrence Academy and their deep connections forged here today and throughout the decades.
