RESTO WITH A VIEW
Nothing is more San Antonio than eating delicious food overlooking the river. I love the oldworld vibe of Ocho at Hotel Havana, not to mention the incredible food. The pan-Latin menu takes inspiration from Mexican, Cuban and Texas cuisine — it literally never disappoints!
COME VISIT
SAN ANTONIO
Owner and chief baker at Bird Bakery, Elizabeth is also known for being a judge on Cupcake Wars and a regular guest on the Today show. The multitasking mom of two was spotted on this year’s Oscars red carpet — oh, and she’s married to Armie Hammer!
My home away from home is Bird Bakery. It’s my happy place, and if I’m in San Antonio, I’m usually there. We bake all our family recipes from the finest ingredients, on-site each and every day. Our goal is to be sure everyone who walks through our doors leaves happier than they were when they walked in — who wouldn’t want to be there every waking minute of the day?!

ALL IN THE FAMILY
Many of Bird Bakery’s guests were customers of my grandmother’s when she owned her catering company in San Antonio decades ago. Some even went to the elementary school across the street with my father. MISSION SAN JOSÉ
A stunning historic site built on the banks of the San Antonio River in 1720.
My children love the DoSeum, Kiddie Park and the San Antonio Zoo. I spent countless hours (and all my birthday parties) at Kiddie Park and the SA Zoo the first few years of my life. I love to see my children enjoying the same experiences and spaces that I did. The DoSeum is fairly new and an absolute dream for children of all ages. FABULOUS FINDS
MUST-DRINK MARGARITAS
SHAKE SHACK
Running a bakery and restaurant can bring certain challenges, which call for a margarita at the end of the day. And Paloma Blanca has my favorite one in SA. The ’09 Margarita with salt is my go-to beverage. I always order the queso and Guacamole Olmeca, which is prepared tableside. Paloma is a stone’s throw away from Bird. They also serve our Mexican Hot Chocolate Brownie, which is one of the best-selling dessert items on their menu!
BEST-EVER ICE CREAM
In my humble opinion, there’s no better ice cream in the entire world than Blue Bell. And no better selection than in the aisle of H-E-B in Alamo Heights. Whether you’re a pint or a gallon person, if you’re not Blue Belling, you’re not loving. Start with Homemade Vanilla and explore from there!
BURGERS & MORE BURGERS
If I need sustenance beyond Bird Bakery, you can find me at SA’s new Shake Shack. They have my favorite burgers (rivaled only by the Tostada Burger at Chris Madrid’s), and our Monster Cookie is the main ingredient in their Peanut Butter Park Shake.

My favorite shopping spots for home and gifts are Baker Tatum and Hanley-Wood. You’ll find a wonderful, contemporary mix and a fabulous floral department at Baker Tatum. CONSECUTIVE YEAR!
Crizal No-Glare lenses have earned the Good Housekeeping Seal.
Tell us which cover you like best!
The September issue is a pretty big deal in the magazine world — it’s always jam-packed and bursting with fun, fresh ideas to help you kickstart the school year. Because let’s face it, even if you’re not packing lunches and sending little ones off on a big yellow bus, there’s a sense of renewal in the air — and excitement for what’s ahead. We had a blast (and spent some giddy late nights) making sure this issue would deliver everything you need, from backpacks and pens (top-tested picks, pages 106 and 108) to easy style ideas and drugstore beauty stars from $4! And you know what? I want to let you in on a little behind-the-scenes fun. We often debate a cover image, not making a final decision until minutes before the issue is whisked off to the presses. You may have noticed that sometimes we don’t end up making a decision, but leave it up to you, printing two different covers to see which one gets picked up more on the newsstand. This month we were torn between an idyllic fall afternoon, warm enough so you can still let the breeze come in, and one of September’s best garden flavors...freshpicked tomatoes, tomatoes, tomatoes for dinner tonight! Maybe you can help us by answering this question: When you think of what you love about Good Housekeeping, are you most drawn to the image of an inviting home or to a delicious picture of seasonal food? Email your thoughts, with the subject line “GH Cover Test,” to me at jane@goodhousekeeping.com. And if you want to contribute to GH on an ongoing basis, sign up to be a GH tester at ghtesters.com. You’ll unlock access to exclusive opportunities to weigh in on surveys, test new and hot products — and maybe even win some pretty awesome stuff!

T R U E LOV E I remember the day I met my first pet. My dad and I went to pick up a used piano at the house of a couple who were moving to Asia. They needed a home for their Siamese cat, and I fell in love instantly! Fuji was the first (but not only!) pet my dad and I brought home unannounced. Fast-forward, hmmm, a few years (seven cats and four dogs later)… now you don’t even have to leave home to find a pet needing adoption. I spotted the scruffy terrier above (her name’s Pam!) on Instagram and can’t stop thinking about her. Is it time for my cats, Choco and Nim (top), to get a new playmate? Rescuing a pet has so many benefits… for you (they’re often pretrained), for your family (unconditional love) and obviously for the animal!! If you’re thinking of adding a member to your household, view pics on the nearest shelter’s website to fall in love! TWITTER @janefrancisco

ASK THE
GH BEAUTY LAB
Q
Our resident experts answer your questions on healthy skin, hair and more
Q
Is it true that silicones are bad for hair? — STEPH S. DANUSIA WNEK BEAUTY LAB CHEMIST GH
BEAUTY LAB
I’ve heard of the gut’s microbiome, but what is the skin’s? — TONI S.
Dr. Oz says: The skin has long been considered the body’s largest organ, working to keep unwanted bacteria and toxins out of your system and moisture and nutrients in. The community of organisms that lives on skin’s surface is called its microbiome. Your skin is home to bacteria (both beneficial and potentially harmful) that affect your overall health, just like your gut.
Danusia says : First up, silicones are polymers
derived from quartz. They’re added primarily to conditioners and styling products like serums to help soften and smooth hair. You’ll find them listed on ingredient labels with the suffix “-cone” (e.g., dimethicone). Silicones vary in thickness based on formula and intended use (you can gauge a product’s weight by its feel on hair). Thicker silicones make a product more conditioning but can also make hair heavier, which is why they get a bad rap for causing flatness and buildup.
lab lowdown: Silicones are great for conditioning, enhancing shine and protecting strands. Hair will only be negatively affected by them (weighed down or not conditioned or smoothed enough, for example) if you’re using the wrong product for your hair type or too much or too little of the right one. Look for your specific hair type and concern on labels, and apply as directed on the package.
Danusia says: Yes! The prescription bimatoprost (brand name Latisse)
Q
Are any products really proven to help eyelashes grow? — JULIA J.
is FDA-approved to increase eyelash growth. Bimatoprost was initially a glaucoma medication, and patients who used it noticed fuller and longer lashes. The serum, applied to the upper lashline, works by extending eyelashes’ growth phase. Some over-the-counter products also claim to grow lashes and may contain chemically similar forms or derivatives of the active ingredient.
are many places you have skin and similar tissue, including your mouth, your stomach (in its lining) and other linings in your body. When skin’s microbiome is out of balance (too many bad bacteria or too few good), it can lead to issues like allergies and eczema. Scientists are still uncovering other impacts skin’s microbiome can have on health, and exploring this will hopefully lead to prevention and treatment of skin conditions and allergies in the future.
lab lowdown: Use Latisse only as prescribed by a doctor, and discuss
the side effects, which can include iris discoloration. The Beauty Lab recommends skipping copycat products because it’s difficult to determine what active ingredients they contain and predict their effects. For a temporary alternative, boost lashes with mascara, which uses waxes and pigments to coat hairs, making them appear longer, fuller and darker. Try the Beauty Lab’s top-tested mascara for lengthening, IT Cosmetics Superhero Mascara ($24, Ulta).

Creamy Lancôme Effacernes Waterproof Protective Undereye Concealer ($31, lancome-usa .com) topped the Beauty Lab’s concealer test for thoroughly disguising dark shadows all day.
SHADOW FIGHTER With vitamin C and glycerin, RoC Multi Correxion 5 in 1 Eye Cream ($27, amazon.com) was the best at reducing dark circles in the Beauty Lab’s eye treatment test.
“To cancel out dark circles, apply a peach-tinted color corrector after your eye cream and before concealer. Tap and blend both products up to the inner corners of the brows and down to the tops of cheeks for total coverage. Draw attention away from undereye darkness and brighten the area by applying a lightcolored neutral shimmer eyeshadow to lids, and avoid dark liner on the lower lash line, which can make shadows more prominent.” — Lori Taylor Davis, Smashbox Cosmetics global pro lead artist in Culver City, CA

“Dark circles have multiple causes, including blood vessels visible beneath the extremely thin undereye skin, sun damage that further thins skin and causes hyperpigmentation, genetics and facial structure. Repeatedly rubbing skin due to irritation or allergies can also cause darkening, and lack of sleep can worsen it. Visit a dermatologist to assess your specific causes. Pigmented circles can be treated with topical prescription lightening agents like hydroquinone and in-office lasers, while injectable fillers such as Belotero Balance can volumize the undereye area.”

Q
I think I’m removing stains from my carpet, but they come back. Why? — KATIE D.
A: Stains can “reappear” when cleaning products aren’t totally
rinsed out. Detergents left in the carpet after cleaning become sticky when they dry and then attract dirt and dust from shoes and the air. This dirt builds up, and eventually it looks as if the spot has returned. Also, if stains aren’t completely removed in the first place, they will wick up from the base of the pile as the carpet dries and resurface on top. To make sure a stain you’ve cleaned is gone for good, rinse (but don’t saturate) the area with cool water from a spray bottle and blot until the pile feels soft and you don’t see any suds. Fold a paper towel in quarters and lay it on the area. Place a heavy pot on top and leave it overnight. By the a.m., any residue that has traveled up the pile will be absorbed by the paper towel. Toss the towel and fluff the carpet to finish drying.
de-scaling to remove the mineral buildup that’s likely making it sluggish. Some brands recommend their own cleaning formulas, but here’s what I do. Try my DIY Fill the reservoir with full-strength white vinegar. “Brew” continuous cups (without pods) until your machine tells you to add more water. Leave it on for a few hours so the vinegar can loosen the deposits. Empty the reservoir and fill it with clear water. Repeat until the coffeemaker is clean and all traces of vinegar are gone. I do this every three months, at the start of each season. A quick fix Clean your brewer fast without the vinegar smell using GH Seal star Affresh Coffeemaker Cleaner tablets, $5 for four, affresh.com.

Our Kitchen Appliances pros were highly impressed with its ability to both whip delicate egg whites into stiff peaks and quickly (and evenly) knead bread dough. Quiet Mark testing completed prior to this product’s market availability.
These beaters won’t clang noisily against the sides of the bowl when you’re mixing, thanks to their silicone coating (genius!). Plus, they can plow through dense cookie dough.
QUIET MARK RATINGS:
GH Lab experts found that this model’s light weight helped reduce wrist fatigue during lengthy mixing tasks. Look to it for supersmooth cake batter.

Our GH Seal star, this Miele is ideal for allergy and asthma sufferers, since its self-sealing bag keeps dirt out of the air. It’s a powerhouse that cleans everything from delicate curtains to deep carpets.
Dyson’s super-lightweight (and cordless!) model is packed with features like a battery indicator, a sensor for when the filter needs changing and a two-in-one design that makes it a handheld vac too.
LAB LOWDOWN
It clinched the first-place spot for acing our performance tests and was the quietest of our winners. Some consumers said it was heavy (a handle helps with carrying), but its cleaning power can’t be beat.
LAB LOWDOWN
Despite its slim look, this machine rivaled larger ones in our carpet embedded-dirt test. A few testers had trouble emptying the dust cup, but still found it easy to use. It was among the loudest we evaluated.
One of the few vacuums we looked at that received consistent scores across the board, it was especially great at picking up pet hair. Our pros and consumer testers all liked the handy control placement and design.

city experiences
READY, JET, SURPRISE! The only bad thing about a great vacation is planning it. Want to skip all the tedious details and cut straight to check-in? Try the new book-and-reveal vacation trend — you literally don’t know where you’re going until you get to the airport. How it works: You fill out a quickie online form detailing your budget and available travel dates and maybe even take a travel personality quiz (e.g., do you like hole-in-thewall eateries or upscale restaurants? Beaches or mountains?). A travel agent crafts a custom trip and sends you a sealed itinerary a week before your departure. Sure, you could peek, but you’d spoil the surprise. (Psst! Research shows that being surprised lights up the pleasure centers in your brain and gives you a nice shot of dopamine, one of the pleasure hormones, so you’ll be even more amped for your trip.) — Alexis Reliford

WAC KY, D O ES IT WORK? Curtis and Sam together in February 2017, not long before he died.
story FRIENDS HEART TO HEART
the of forever
When best-selling author Curtis Sittenfeld lost her dear college pal and confidant, fellow writer Samuel Park, she stepped in to shepherd his last novel into print—giving back just a little of what he had given her IT WAS THE KIND OF FRIENDSHIP that
was as rare as it was life-giving. For years, Curtis Sittenfeld and Samuel Park, who met while working on their college newspaper, cracked each other up and supported each other’s work. But “there was something unique in Sam’s affection, a miraculous kind of blind spot” when it came to Curtis, as she wrote in an essay about Sam. Though he knew her in her most awkward, vulnerable pre–best seller days (Curtis is the author of blockbusters Prep and Eligible and more), “he always, unfailingly, thought that I was hilarious and wonderful...and that everything I wrote was brilliant.” In short, he was the kind of friend who not only loved you as you were, but whose vision of you made you want to be the person he saw. When Sam, an author in his own right with one acclaimed novel and other works to his credit, was diagnosed with late-stage stomach cancer at 38, Curtis felt the value of their relationship even more. The two read
drafts of each other’s work and offered their usual loving but honest feedback — until Sam lost his cancer battle right after he finished writing his last novel, The Caregiver. Curtis pieced together his final scenes, being a caretaker of his words in a way he no longer could. “It’s bittersweet that he isn’t here for the publication of his gorgeous book,” says Curtis. “But I’m happy that his sensibility and intelligence will continue to touch people.” Out this month, The Caretaker centers on Mara, a child in Brazil in the turbulent 1970s; her mother’s poverty pushes her to get involved with a rebel group. The consequences follow her when she flees to Los Angeles and becomes the caretaker for a rich divorcée who is dying of stomach cancer. Visual, almost hypnotic language creates a memorable story of what it means to truly care. Sam was always “so generous and encouraging,” says Curtis. “I tried to emulate his generosity — in my writing and in life.”
YouTube Therapy Oddly soothing videos are taking over the Internet. People swear by their calming effects. Can hitting play actually change your life? WHAT IT IS Many people experience what they describe as pleasant brain tingling when they’re completely relaxed —that’s the body’s autonomous sensory meridian response, or ASMR. A huge online community watches videos designed to stimulate ASMR, which feature people whispering, turning the pages of books or making gentle tapping or crinkling sounds. It’s also common to experience ASMR when you’re being soothed or paid attention to in a kind way, as when you’re having your hair done at a salon. THE CLAIM Proponents say the sensations lower stress levels and help with sleep. THE EVIDENCE Research is just getting under way, but an ongoing study of over 25,000 people found that ASMR was beneficial to about half of those diagnosed with anxiety or insomnia. “However, these initial studies are self-reported by the participants,” says Craig Richard, Ph.D., founder of ASMR University.com and author of Brain Tingles. “It will take many well-designed clinical studies with consistent findings before the potential health benefits of ASMR are best understood.” THE BOTTOM LINE It can’t hurt, and it’s free. Three easy ways you might trigger ASMR: Watch videos by searching for “ASMR” on YouTube; listen to ASMR podcasts; or ask a friend or your partner to play with your hair or gently rub your back. — Stacia Affelt

Should I take a collagen supplement? A Probably not. Here’s the deal: Collagen is a type of protein that’s found in all animal sources (like beef, poultry and seafood), and in all of our bodies, providing structure for connective tissues. Since our collagen declines with age, you’ll see beneficial claims on cosmetics that promise to take years off your face. But there’s not much substantive data in humans to show that eating extra collagen in supplements will provide any noticeable benefit in healthy adults. There’s also newer data that supports its use to help alleviate arthritic pain, but on the whole, studies are small and research is limited. Bottom line: You’re better off eating protein-packed foods and skipping the supplements.
I’ve heard that lectins are bad for you. Should I steer clear of them? A Lectins (another kind of protein!) are in just about everything, but are particularly high in pulses, whole grains, vegetables and fruit. That’s right — the very disease-fighting foods you want to be eating truckloads of. So what’s up with the lectin shaming? A recent book with celebrity hype argues that the way lectins are metabolized could be linked to symptoms like weight gain and brain fog. But while lectin isolated in a lab showed that this was chemically possible, there is no evidence that naturally occurring lectin in food causes any problems in healthy people. Bottom line: Keep enjoying a mostly plant-based diet.
Can apple cider vinegar (ACV) help me drop pounds? A Subbing ACV in for creamy salad dressings can help you cut back on total calories, added sugar and saturated fat — ACV is filled with flavor but has zero calories. That said, it’s no weight-loss elixir: Research to date has been spotty, and any benefits appear to be linked to the good-foryou foods it’s being added to rather than the vinegar itself. I definitely don’t recommend drinking ACV: On an empty stomach, it can be tough on your GI tract and may delay some digestive-enzyme activity, causing painful reflux. Bottom line: Vinegar is a condiment, not a cure-all.
You know her as an amazing entertainer, songwriter and actor, but did you know that Dolly Parton holds a Good Housekeeping Seal? (She’s the only human ever to have earned one!) It was granted in 2001 for her work donating free books to children through her nonprofit, Imagination Library. As she celebrated the distribution of her 100 millionth book, Dolly talked to GH.
Her inspiration “My father, who couldn’t read or write. He was from a big country family, and most kids worked in the fields rather than going to school. He felt inadequate, but he was such a smart, good human being.” How it works Each month, Imagination Library mails a new book from Dolly to every child registered to receive one. The Library negotiates low prices for the books, and volunteers raise funds to cover their cost. Dolly’s effort began in Tennessee, but has spread all over the U.S. and the world. Favorite book “The Little Engine That Could, because it’s a book of confidence, and it shows children that you can do it if you think you can. That’s my philosophy in life.” — Lindsey Benoit O’Connell

AWESOME WOMAN
from
hooters girl
BOSS LADY to
KAT COLE, 40 President and COO, Focus Brands Hometown: Atlanta
Raised by a single mom in a trailer park, Kat Cole learned everything about success from watching her mother juggle multiple jobs while parenting three girls. Some weeks they had as little as $10 for groceries, “but I always remember the positivity my mom had,” says Kat. “It’s shaped who I am, made me realize possibilities in circumstances others saw as impossible. We didn’t have money or a network of professionals, but we had drive.” Eager to help her mom, Kat worked when she was a teenager at Hooters in Jacksonville, FL, as a hostess, a waitress and then a trainer for new hires. “I built a really thick skin,” she says. “Not because of the customers, but because of the way I was judged by others when they found out I worked at Hooters. When you’re working there, you feel like a rock star.”
PIVOTAL MOMENT One day the cooks
quit en masse, and Kat jumped into the kitchen to help keep the food rolling out. “At the time, I didn’t think this experience might lead to an illustrious career in the food-service industry,” she jokes. “I just wanted to pay my bills. Plus, chicken wings are easy — they float when they’re done.” Hooters headquarters took notice of Kat’s can-do attitude and recruited her when she was 20, though she had never even been on a plane, to help open franchises in Australia, Mexico and Argentina. Six years later, she became vice president of the company, pushing revenues from $300 million to more than $800 million a year. In 2010, she was hired by Cinnabon to become its president; eventually she was named president of Cinnabon’s parent company, Focus Brands, where she also oversees Carvel, Auntie Anne’s, Moe’s Southwest Grill and more. In 2017, she gave birth to her son and was named COO. When you stop for a snack at the mall food court, you can often thank Kat for it.
RULE SHE LIVES BY “The hotshot
rule. Every quarter in business, I sit back and ask myself, If a hotshot took over my job today, what’s one thing she would see as unacceptable and tackle first? Then I do that thing. Why can’t the hotshot be you?” Kat does the same with her personal life once a month, asking herself how well she’s doing as a sister, mother, daughter and more.
SHE FEELS POWERFUL WHEN
“Things are crazy, but I’m calm. I feel my weakest when I get caught up in chaos.” — Erin Bried
SECRET TO SUCCESS
“Say yes before you’re ready. When Hooters asked me to fly to Australia, I didn’t have a passport, but that didn’t stop me. Take the risk, but then work hard to make up for what you’re missing. I call it ‘the hustle muscle.’ ”
What a hoot! Kat’s server job led to her becoming COO.

THE SCIENCE OF
SITTING
It’s been called “the new smoking” for its role in a number of diseases, plus aches and pains. But it’s not as if you can just quit entirely. Here’s what too much time spent in a chair can do to your body — and the many ways experts say you can stay healthy BY BETH JANES
THE BASICS
How bad is sitting, really? Not as bad as smoking, but close. As with most unwise habits, it depends on how and how much you do it and what you do to counter it. Occasional days when your Fitbit doesn’t crack 1,000 steps, much less 10,000, are no big deal. But because many of us spend day after day behind the wheel, then in an office chair, in a kitchen chair and finally on the couch, conditions related to sedentary behavior may kill more people than tobacco, says David A. Alter, M.D., Ph.D., chair of cardiovascular and metabolic research at the UHNToronto Rehabilitation Institute. Yet it’s not so much the act of sitting that’s dangerous.
The problem is lack of moving. “The absence of muscle activity has all these metabolic adverse effects,” Dr. Alter says, influencing how your body processes sugar, hormone and mitochondrial functioning, heart disease risk and more, all of which have a far-reaching impact on your long-term health. Basically, your body needs to move—often—to work optimally, but our world isn’t set up for that. It’s estimated that 200 years ago people sat only about five hours per day; now some office workers can sit for up to 15. On top of that, we slouch, lean, tense our shoulders and otherwise stay in unnatural positions for long periods, which leads to aches and pains, says David Reavy, a physical therapist and trainer and founder of React Physical Therapy in Chicago. So what’s a modern human to do? Get up and walk around for a few minutes, then settle in and read on.
Know the Risks
YOUR BODY IN A CHAIR
By one estimate, today we spend, on average, nine to 10 hours a day on our bums. That increases our chance for some 35 serious, sometimes life-shortening conditions, likely because getting up and moving around is key for regulating proteins, genes and other systems that lower our susceptibility to disease. Below, the effects of “sittingitis”: Depression and anxiety
Obesity, diabetes and heart trouble
The more you sit at work, the greater your risk, even if you exercise, a study in Mental Health and Physical Activity found. On the flip side, other research shows that the more people move throughout the day, the happier they are.
Yes, you burn fewer calories. But also, the hormone insulin’s ability to move glucose out of blood and into cells may decline when you sit for long periods, Dr. Alter says. Cholesterol and markers of inflammation may go up; how you metabolize fat changes; and vascular function may also be reduced. Research shows that this can nearly double your risk of diabetes and increase your risk of cardiovascular disease by 14%.
Back and neck pain Just four hours’ worth of sitting can compress a key disc in your lower back, putting you at risk of back problems and pain, says Gregory Billy, M.D., associate professor of orthopedics and rehabilitation at Penn State University. Poor posture can also lead to disc problems in your neck.
Cancer Risk of colon and endometrial cancer goes up even after accounting for exercise, possibly due to inflammation, weight gain and other changes. One review in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute reports that for every additional two hours per day spent sitting, risk jumps 8% and 10% for colon cancer and endometrial cancer, respectively.
Weak bones Weight-bearing exercise, including standing and walking, stresses your skeleton in a good way, signaling specialized cells to replace old bone tissue with new. When you sit too much, the body replaces less of what it loses, leading to fragile bones and a greater risk of osteoporosis, especially as you get older.
Slow blood flow in the legs from a sedentary lifestyle, possibly along with lower levels of clot-preventing proteins, increases your risk, according to a study in BMJ. Women who sat the most (more than 40 hours per week) had more than double the risk of a clot moving to their lungs of those who sat less than 10 hours.

The estimated increase in age of the cells in women who sit 10 or more hours a day and don’t get more than 40 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity.
3 STEPS TO OFFSET THE DAMAGE Sitting happens, but you can greatly mitigate the ill effects 1 SIT LESS Replace at least two hours of sitting a day with movement breaks. “Little breaks don’t
seem like much, but they add up,” Dr. Alter says. Two hours spread over the 16 or so hours you’re awake is only 7.5 minutes an hour. This simple trade was associated with an 11% lower body mass index (BMI), 14% lower triglycerides, higher “good” HDL cholesterol, a trimmer waist and better glucose control, per a study in the European Heart Journal.
2
3 PERK UP YOUR POSTURE We all need to take a load off sometimes, but doing it the right way can help you avoid the imbalances and alignment issues that can lead to short- and long-term neck, back, hip and thigh pain, says Reavy.
CARDIO MORE
Getty Images.
Get at least 150 minutes per week, but up to an hour a day if you can. “The effects of
sitting are much worse for people who don’t exercise,” Dr. Alter says, adding that 150 minutes of cardio a week will improve cardiopulmonary fitness and have a pronounced impact on health and longevity. But new guidelines are expected in the near future that could recommend more: A huge study in The Lancet that analyzed data from more than 1 million adults found that 60 to 75 minutes of moderate cardio per day seemed to wipe out the increased risk of premature death associated with lots of sitting. Strengthening the right muscles is also key, says Reavy, as targeting your core helps maintain proper sitting posture.
AT WORK • Sit up straight, using your muscles (not the chair) for support. Your lumbar spine should be slightly arched. • Look ahead. Move your monitor to eye level and up the font size or wear readers if you find yourself leaning in. • Keep your feet flat, with your knees lower than your hips, or bent at an angle no smaller than 90 degrees. If you need to, adjust your chair. • Bring your shoulders back and down. Keep your elbows at 90 degrees, hands on desk.
WATCHING TV • Lean back. Keep your shoulders and spine (including your neck) neutral, not slouched, rounded or twisted. Use pillows if needed for support. • Watch straight on. Avoid turning your head or twisting your back to see the screen. Keep your chin in a neutral position. • Stretch your legs. Put your feet up, legs outstretched on an ottoman or the couch, no higher than your hips. This gives tight hip flexors a chance to relax too.
IN THE CAR • Scoot your seat up so you don’t need to reach far for the wheel. • Sit upright, with your shoulders down and your back (and ideally your head) resting against the seat. Adjust lumbar support or add a pillow to thwart slouching. • Tuck your chin slightly. This keeps your head neutral. • Adjust your seat height. Your knees should be slightly bent and lower than hips. When you can, stretch both legs out for pelvic alignment.

ROLL OUT ACHES
Hip flexors get seriously overworked and tight when you sit incorrectly, says Reavy. This decreases activity in your abs and butt, leaving you more prone to injury when you exercise. And when you get injured? Yeah, you sit more. “It can lead to a vicious cycle,” he says. Do this feel-good move every day.

D O YO U N E E D A STA N D I N G D E S K? You may — doing laps around the office and moving more when off the clock can counter too much sitting as well, but simply being on your feet can help. Still, standing all day isn’t good either, says Dr. Alter, as blood can pool in the legs, so mix it up throughout the day. Our experts in the GH Institute Engineering Lab like the Humanscale QuickStand Eco, which moves from sitting to standing. “It’s easy to set up, as it doesn’t need to be bolted to your desk, and easy to adjust — the monitor and keyboard move separately,” says Chief Technologist Rachel Rothman. A BRUSH WITH DANGER It’s been easier to avoid triclosan — an antibacterial ingredient linked to hormone disruption — since the U.S. banned it from soaps marketed to consumers in 2016. Most toothpastes don’t contain the harmful ingredient, but there are exceptions. If the ingredients in yours include triclosan, toss it…and your toothbrush! Scientists have found that significant amounts of triclosan can accumulate on brushes over time and be released during brushing, even after users have switched to a triclosan-free product.

Donating clothes and shoes to those less fortunate is a common practice for many of us. But often overlooked is the need for underwear. After learning this from a social worker in 2008, Rabbi Amy Weiss founded Undies For Everyone (UFE), a Houston-based nonprofit that helps provide disadvantaged children with new, clean underwear. Since its inception, UFE has distributed more than 2 million pairs with the help of its partners. Support the cause this school year by holding your own underwear drive or by donating money at undiesforeveryone.org.

Fidgety kids often do things that really annoy parents and teachers, like rocking in chairs or clicking mechanical pencils. Resist the urge to say, “Stop that!” Instead, let her get her energy out, then refocus her by breaking up assignments into short segments.
This is the child who always forgets his book at school or where he put his homework. The fix: a regular backpack overhaul. Each night, have your child empty his bag and organize notes and anything needed for the next day, which will get him in the habit of decluttering.
Assignments are completed very fast and are often full of mistakes. Check over her work? Never! She’s got better things to do. Saying “Slow down!” won’t work. Instead, institute a set study period of dedicated homework time and encourage her to use any extra minutes to check her work.

With glow-in-the-dark trim and graphics, this L.L.Bean backpack helps kids be visible and safe in the dark. Its shoulder straps had the most padding of all the bags tested.
This Columbia bag scored high marks for being lightweight and having thick padding. Two full center sections mean there’s room for a laptop and the extra books older kids carry.
LAB LOWDOWN Our abrasion and drop tests were no challenge for this lightweight bag. It repelled water well and easily held extra notebooks. All it lacks is a waist or chest strap for extra stability.
LAB LOWDOWN The fabric
This recycledPET fabric bag (made from 18 plastic bottles) aced our abrasion and rain tests and held 10 pounds of books and supplies with room to spare. GARNET HILL KIDS ECO SIGNATURE BACKPACK, $50, GARNETHILL.COM

MEET OUR E X P E RT S
MARC KIELBURGER
As the founders of Humanitarian Seal star WE Charity, a social movement that helps bring schools, communities and individuals together to do good, these brothers have introduced young people around the world to the rewarding power of service and leadership. And since they’re both dads, they’ve got great firsthand ideas for bringing up compassionate kids.
RAISING KIDS who CARE Children don’t magically evolve into caring adults. They need your help to get there, and it’s easier than you may think One day when we were children, our mom, a special-needs teacher, pulled our car into the parking lot of a discount-clothing store. Marc, around 11 at the time, slid down below the dashboard so he couldn’t be seen. “We’re stopping here?” he asked plaintively. Marc always insisted on wearing cool T-shirts with sports logos, not discount duds, and our mom was worried he was turning into a snob. Like many parents, she wondered how she could raise us to be sensitive to different needs when we lived in a well-to-do suburb and lacked for nothing. She had experienced homelessness as a child, and after that day she started taking us downtown to meet and hear the stories of people living on the street, volunteer at food banks and visit immigrant families. Our dad read the paper to us daily, talking about issues near and far and discussing what our family might do to make a difference. Thanks to this guidance and our parents’ unwavering support, by the time we were teenagers we decided to launch our own charity. (And Marc became more openminded about his fashion choices!) How to cultivate kindhearted little humans:
IT STARTS WITH SNUGGLING. When you offer a cuddle to chase away fears or a kiss to soothe a scratched knee, you’re teaching your child to notice a need and respond to it. GIVE THEM A JOB. Household duties like helping with dishes are more than chores; they instill a sense of responsibility and community on a small scale. Family is the basic kinship unit of society and the most important group your child belongs to. Contributing at home reinforces that he or she can take action elsewhere. LISTEN, THEN LEAD. Pay attention to the causes your children care about, which might be different from those you do. Helping them research ways to give back to favorite causes will enhance your compassion as well. CREATE A FAMILY MISSION STATEMENT. Discuss a set of core values you share and want to adopt, then build a mission statement that includes a social issue to tackle together — write a letter to an elected representative, attend related events, etc. Seeing you working passionately on a project will encourage your kids to do the same.

An engaging toy is the key to comforting Fluffy or Fido when nobody’s home. Designate a set of items your pet can play with only when you’re away, and he’ll be less likely to mind alone time. For cats, try Petlinks System Hide & Peek Apple & Worm Catnip Toy ($4, petco.com), and for your dog, test out Planet Dog’s Link (above, $38, planetdog.com), an interactive puzzle game with treats hidden throughout.
Music is beneficial to everyone’s ears, including your pet’s! Research has shown that playing instrumental music while you’re out can be especially soothing, because it mimics the noise your pet is used to hearing when you are there. Turn on the Relax My Dog or Pet Therapy: Calming Music for Cats playlist (free on spotify.com) for a full day’s worth of serene sounds.
If your pet howls or meows in protest when you leave, transform your smartphone, tablet or computer into a two-way audio and visual pet monitor with GH Media & Tech Lab pick the Arlo Pro ($190, amazon .com). Pets can recognize an owner’s voice even without seeing or smelling him or her, according to researchers, so let your words carry your pet to a relaxing place.

What type of shrimp should I buy? Susan says: Frozen! Most of the “fresh” shrimp you’ll find at the grocery store started in the freezer anyway. Choose bags marked IQF, which stands for Individually Quick Frozen, since the seafood has been frozen separately rather than in a big block, making it easier to thaw just what you need when you need it.

The lawsuit, known as In re Domestic Drywall Antitrust Litigation, MDL No. 2437 and 13-MD-2437, pending in federal court in Philadelphia, claims that certain manufacturers conspired to fix prices for Drywall, and as a result, businesses, individuals and entities purchasing drywall for end use and not for resale paid too much. This notice is only a summary; please visit the settlement website at www.indirectdrywallsettlement.com for the full Notice and other information, including deadlines, a list of defendants, and how to submit a claim. New Settlement: A new settlement has been reached with the remaining defendants in the case (American Gypsum Company LLC, New NGC Inc., and PABCO Building Products LLC) for $1 million plus $250,000 to provide notice of this settlement. The new settlement affects all businesses, persons, or other entities currently residing in the U.S. that indirectly purchased Drywall in the U.S. manufactured by any of the Defendants, their subsidiaries, affiliates, or joint ventures for end use and not for resale between January 1, 2012 and January 5, 2018, with some exclusions identified on the settlement website. Visit the settlement website for a full explanation of who is affected by the settlement. Proposed Distribution: If the New Settlement is approved it will conclude the litigation and funds from this settlement, and prior settlements with Defendants TIN Inc., USG Corporation, United States Gypsum Company, and Lafarge North America Inc., will be distributed. The total settlement proceeds are $16.95 million. Visit the settlement website for additional information about these previous settlements.
What are the benefits? If approved, the Proposed Distribution allows class members who purchased drywall in certain states between January 1, 2012 and December 31, 2013 to recover monetary damages. The settlement funds will be distributed to eligible claimants after deduction of any court-ordered attorneys’ fees, litigation expenses, and service awards to the Class Representatives. Visit the settlement website for eligible states and other information about the allocation of the settlement proceeds.
What are my rights? You must file a claim by mail or online by January 9, 2019 to get a payment. If you submit a claim, you will be bound by the decisions of the court and give up your right to sue American, NGC, or PABCO regarding the claims in this lawsuit. If you do nothing you will not get a payment and you will be bound by the decisions of the Court. You may exclude yourself from the New Settlement by September 21, 2018. You will not receive a payment, but you will keep the right to bring your own lawsuit against American Gypsum, NGC, or PABCO at your own expense. Excluding yourself from the New Settlement Class will have no effect on your rights with respect to the prior settlements with Lafarge, TIN or USG. You may object to the terms of the New Settlement by September 21, 2018 (but not the terms of the previously approved settlements with USG, TIN, or Lafarge). If you are a member of any of the Settlement Classes, you may object to the Proposed Distribution, the request for attorneys’ fees and expenses, or the service awards. The settlement website describes how to submit a claim, opt out, or object. The Court will hold a hearing on October 25, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at the James A. Byrne U.S. Courthouse, 601 Market Street, Philadelphia, PA 19106, Courtroom 3A, to consider whether the New Settlement, the proposed distribution, and the motion for fees, costs, and service awards should be approved. The motions for settlement approval and attorneys’ fees, costs, and service awards will be posted on the website after they are filed. You may attend this hearing, but you do not have to. This is only a summary. Please visit the website, call 1-855-229-7511 or write the Settlement Administrator c/o Drywall Settlement, P.O. Box 58190, Philadelphia, PA 19102-8190 for complete details of the settlement benefits and your rights.
