Getting glam on the go just got easier, thanks to the Pocket Palette, a portable single serving of mascara, lip/cheek color and BB cream or foundation that comes in four shades. The clever idea came to Lynda Peralta in 2013 after an early-morning train ride left her putting on makeup from a sandwich bag in an effort to avoid carrying a bulky case. Five years later, following an über-successful Kickstarter campaign, the Pocket Palette was officially born. thepocketpalette.com, $12 for three and $35 for 10

Angie Thomas didn’t know that her debut novel, The Hate U Give, would be a New York Times best seller — or that it would hold the list’s top spot for most of 80 weeks and counting. We caught up with the acclaimed author on the eve of her book’s highly anticipated film adaptation, which hits screens nationwide October 19.

“Growing up as a black woman in Mississippi, I knew what it felt like to be the ‘only’ in a room, like I needed to act a certain way in order to make others comfortable,” says Thomas. This “code-switching” plays a central role in the story, which follows Starr, 16, played by Amandla Stenberg. Starr’s two worlds — the predominantly black neighborhood she lives in and the white prep school she attends — collide after she witnesses the death of a childhood friend shot by a police officer. Thomas penned the story out of anguish and frustration over real-life incidents of racial injustice, but hopes the film will inspire viewers to do more and judge less: “I want people to step into Starr’s shoes and walk away with a better understanding of what it means to be someone like her, to recognize her humanity and not be afraid to speak out against hate.” Starr’s mom is played by Regina Hall — check her out in our fashion feature on page 37. — Alexis Reliford

Told it was unlikely she’d ever conceive, the then 33-year-old was devastated. But with the help of her reproductive immunologist, she became pregnant through IVF. “I was at work when the doctor called — I literally jumped up and down and called my family,” she recalls. But pregnancies for women with endometriosis can be complicated, and Diana was very nervous that she would miscarry. Happily, the little dude was a healthy 8 lbs, 11 oz. “I’m overwhelmed with gratitude,” Diana says.

favorite things some of our

I’m trying to remember when I went from hating shopping as a kid, lagging behind my mom in her favorite shoe or fabric stores (she made almost all our clothes, upholstered furniture — even sewed my prom dress!), to actually enjoying the thrill of the hunt. I’m always on the lookout for the perfect sunglasses (I’ve been “collecting” for years!); flea market vintage wine goblets (I can never seem to resist); and almost anything with a stripe. For some reason, these little things just make me smile. But the way we shop has certainly changed. Lately every time I look at my Instagram or play a game of Boggle on my phone, a “miraculous” new must-have pops up to tempt me...who even knows if these “wonders” actually work? That’s why I was next-level excited about our new GH Lab Store at the Mall of America. I remember my first trip to Minnesota with our strategic projects director, Lindsey Benoit O’Connell, to scout the mall. It’s practically its own country, with roller coasters, an aquarium, tons of restaurants and even hotels. It actually has twice as many visitors as Disneyland! Who knew?! What a prime spot to introduce some of the best-ofthe-best products curated by our Institute scientists (who literally test them all!) to millions of shoppers. This store has everything! Think innovative kitchen gadgets, the winning toys of 2018, smart-home tech that will change the way you live, toprated bedding — and so much more. See for yourself: Turn to page 95 for just a few of the items on our testers’ wish lists. The coolest part? If you can’t make it to Minneapolis, just scan an Amazon SmileCode to beam the goods to your front door. Go to amazon.com/shop/ghtested to shop these standout picks! And yes, you can now check off “holiday shopping” on your to-do list!

Dr. Oz says: Yes, your face’s structure and features can expand or shrink over time. A combination of gravity, thinning skin and loss of fat can make the face seem longer and droop in areas that were once lifted or plump, like your forehead and under your eyes. Facial bones can weaken and even break down as we age, leading to unevenness (like widening) in the cheeks. These factors combined (plus cartilage changes) may even create the perception that the nose is drooping. LAB LOWDOWN: You may not be able to prevent or correct changes in bone

Our makeup artist experts agree that concealer should be applied after foundation — and should match it (and your skin tone) — as lighter or darker hues can emphasize what you’re trying to hide. “Target around the nose, under eyes, the middle of the chin and forehead, inner eye sockets and any discolored areas,” says Birgitte Philippides, makeup artist evaluator for the Beauty Lab — and tap, don’t spread, for maximum coverage.

A P P L I CAT I O N 1 0 1 When shopping, grab a few colors close to your skin tone, then “try going near a window for natural light,” says Maybelline New York global makeup artist Grace Lee. Apply on (or hold each bottle up to) your jawline—the best place to test a hue “so you can see if it matches your face and neck,” she says—and compare with a compact mirror (or phone camera!).

For liquids, which are thinner, use a dense-bristled foundation brush to spread the product over larger areas and blend it into creases. A makeup sponge better distributes thicker creams and can stipple it on smaller spots.

FEARLESS

Be bold, gutsy, audacious—at any age. That’s the kind of moxie L’Oréal Paris Age Perfect® seeks as we create our annual list of top 50 over 50 women who unabashedly exemplify living life on their own terms. We are thrilled to honor these incredible women who are being recognized for their impact on the world within one of five categories—Fearless Female, Humanitarian Hero, Mover & Shaker, Out-of-the-Box Entrepreneur, or Thrill Seeker.

DEBRA PONZEK OUT- OF-THE-BOX ENTREPRENEUR "I feel fortunate to be in my 50s and remain so passionate about what I do! The biggest gift of this age is a sense of confidence and real satisfaction. In this decade, I can reflect upon and celebrate my accomplishments and find a great balance between work, family, friends, and other activities that I love." A CULINARY STANDOUT

When Debra left college to pursue a culinary career, she believed it was worth the investment. It paid off. She’s a James Beard Foundation Awardwinning chef and owner of Aux Délices stores in Connecticut. It’s no surprise she applies the same philosophy to her beauty routine—investing in her skin to look and feel her best.

To mix things up, we asked her to incorporate L'Oréal Paris Age Perfect® Rosy Tone Moisturizer into her skincare regimen to see if a glowing review was on the menu. Here’s what she had to say:

“Rosy Tone Moisturizer gave my face a nice, natural, healthy look. I love that it brought back some of the natural pink tone my skin had when I was younger!”

2018 Honoree Categories THRILL SEEKERS • HUMANITARIAN HEROES MOVERS & SHAKERS • FEARLESS FEMALES • OUT-OF-THE-BOX ENTREPRENEURS

DIANA BYER HUMANITARIAN HERO “After 40 years of running a small arts organization in a major arts capital, I can credibly teach my dancers, students, and LIFT children from city homeless shelters. Taking risks and attacking life fully without fear of mistakes is a valuable way to prepare for all of life's obstacles. In my 70s, I'm happy to have the ability to continue my work.” AN UPLIFTING ARTIST

This New York Theatre Ballet founder is a true champion of dance for the greater good. And that’s exactly the performance she expects from her beauty products. Diana balances a good diet and the very best moisturizer to make her skin glow from morning to night.

Practice makes perfect. Using an anti-aging moisturizer daily is good technique. We asked Diana to put L'Oréal Paris Age Perfect® Rosy Tone Moisturizer to the test. Looks like it will take center stage in her beauty regimen.

"I use Rosy Tone Moisturizer every morning. For the first time in my adult life, my skin has never looked or felt better."

MY COFFEE M Y WAY For Dina Manganaris of New York City, being a chef is all about finding balance—whether it’s achieved in the ingredients and flavors of her native Balkan cuisine or in stolen moments of peace amid the chaos of work. Here, she shares how a great cup of coffee, made to perfection in the Krups ThermoBrew Coffee Maker, keeps her delighting in the details from bold start to smooth finish.

GROUNDING RITUAL Dina begins each day simply and early, enjoying 10 minutes of meditation over a delicious cup of coffee. With features like an oversized showerhead to sprinkle water over the grounds and a flavor mix tube that swirls the coffee into the pot, the Krups ThermoBrew delivers a more balanced, even, aromatic brew just how Dina likes it, every time.

“A FULL, WELL-BALANCED CUP OF COFFEE ROUNDS OUT A DELICIOUS MEAL WITH ITS FLAVORS.”

MOMENTS TOGETHER SAVORED Brunch parties are a frequent occurrence in the charming West Harlem brownstone where Dina lives with her husband and son. “I believe in the magical power of the dining table,” she says. “I am so grateful I get to share something so precious to me as my heritage on the plate.”

the finest detail A TASTE OF HOME From pomegranate salad to cauliflower white bean soup and distinctive details like fresh sharena sol, marigold, and sweet paprika, Dina’s cuisine is heavily influenced by her native Bosnia and Herzegovina. “Entertaining allows me to share my history as well as the enjoyment that food brings me.”

CUP OF J OY

Dina’s favorite way to end the perfect meal…or a long and satisfying day? Coffee, of course! Although she favors it black with no cream or sugar, her Krups ThermoBrew is entertaining-friendly with small-batch brewing options to suit everyone’s tastes and an adjustable keep-warm function so the pot stays fresh.

GH CLEANING LAB GH’s resident home-care dynamo shares her best tips and favorite tricks to conquer your toughest messes and trouble spots CAROLYN FORTé GH HOME CARE LAB DIRECTOR

Q

GH

CLEANING LAB

Yikes! I left oatmeal cooking on the stove and it burned. Can the pot be saved? — EMILY L .

What should I be using to safely clean and protect my granite countertops? — AUDREY D.

Q

For a long-lasting, easy-to-clean alternative to granite, consider GH Seal star Caesarstone — it stands up to wear and tear better than natural stone!

A: Granite is a durable stone and more stain- and chip-resistant

than marble, but it’s not indestructible. For daily wipe-downs, use a cleaner made for granite, like GH Seal star Weiman Granite & Stone Cleaner Spray or Daily Wipes. The mild formulas cut grease and remove surface stains without the damaging effects of vinegar or ammonia, and they won’t leave behind a dull film like ordinary dish soap can. Every few weeks or as needed, use a granite polish to restore the shine and help repel stains. The best thing you can do for your countertop is make sure it’s properly sealed. If a few drops of water soak in rather than bead up, it’s time to reseal it. Countertops take a lot of abuse, so check yours every six to 12 months.

A musty odor is coming from my kitchen garbage disposal. The bleach and liquid cleaners I’ve tried don’t help. How can I nix it? — SARA C.

A: With all the food scraps that go into your sink’s garbage disposal, it’s easy to understand why

it smells. For a quick fix, grind up some lemon slivers or a few ice cubes made with white vinegar, or sprinkle in baking soda and run the hot water. For a deeper clean, flush it with hot water and use a long-handled brush to loosen gunk stuck to the inside walls and around the blades. If yours has a rubber gasket at the opening, particles can collect there too — flip it up, then rinse and brush the underside and clean the stopper. I like to use a foaming disposal cleaner, like Lemi Shine or GH Seal star Affresh, once a month or so to help loosen stuck-on grime and deodorize.

A: Luckily, yes! Here’s a tip

my mother taught me to rescue burned stainless steel pans—it works like a charm. Fill your pot with water and put it back on the stove. Squirt in a good amount of dish liquid and bring the sudsy water to a boil. Lower the heat to a simmer. With a spoon or spatula, coax the burned residue from the pan as it softens. When it’s all gone, empty the pot and wash it with a stainless steel cleanser like Cameo and a scrub sponge like GH Seal star Brillo Estracell. Kitchen: Justin Coit. Lemon: Getty Images.

Indoor swings, Ping-Pong tables and bowling alleys are being included in new apartment buildings, offering instant access to good times. “This all gives you permission to have fun,” says Saucier. But don’t pressure yourself to play a certain way. “Play is defined as purposeless,” he says, something you do because it engages you in such a deep way that you lose track of time, not because you’ll gain benefits. Designs, a fashion brand of inspirational tops, donating 50% of proceeds from its Miracle Line to the March of Dimes, which funds research to prevent prematurity and birth defects and reduce infant mortality. “Our clothing is meant to put out a message of hope,” says Nadine.

WAC KY, D O ES IT WORK?

SUGARCRAVING BUSTERS This new diet aid promises to nix the need for sweets. Here’s the deal There’s a spate of new products that could help curb your cravings: lozenges and sprays that make sugar taste meh. Normally, when you eat sugar, your brain releases the feel-good hormone dopamine, and eating sweet treats habitually triggers cravings — the brain starts activating the same reward response when you’re exposed to related stimuli (e.g., the place you usually eat them), says Eric Stice, Ph.D., clinical psychologist and senior research scientist at the Oregon Research Institute. The Claim: The gymnema sylvestre leaf extract in these products is said to block sweetness receptors on the tongue. Because you don’t enjoy the goodies, they become easier to pass up.

Tamara Hansen.

The Evidence: Stice’s study, published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology and funded by a lozenge manufacturer, found that people who popped a gymnemic lozenge chomped 44% less candy than those who sucked on a placebo mint. Should You Try Them? The science is legit. While sucking on a regular mint can help you stop eating by distracting you until your brain registers that you’re full, it won’t make sweet treats bland the way gymnema does. KIDS TAKE THE STAGE Legendary singer-songwriter Natalie Merchant gives some children who need it most a chance to shine THE FIRST TIME NATALIE MERCHANT

walked into a preschool classroom in Troy, NY, 15 little faces turned to her eagerly — and cautiously. She was there to create a musical of Mother Goose rhymes, a project she dreamed up for kids in Head Start, the federal antipoverty program that provides early education, health screenings and other support to low-income families. “Some of these kids come from areas where you don’t trust strangers,” she says. “Or they didn’t want to get invested in me if I wasn’t coming back.” But Natalie did come back — every Monday and Friday, gradually earning their trust as she worked with a total of 90 children on a pageant to mark their passage into kindergarten, a key milestone for underprivileged preschoolers (without services like Head Start, they tend to enter school lagging well behind their middle-class peers). Other days, she marshaled a large crew of volunteers to sew costumes and build and paint sets. Working with children may sound far from Natalie’s life with the band 10,000 Maniacs and as a solo artist, but giving back runs deep in her DNA. “I’m from a working-

class background,” she says. “Money was tight — I remember getting called up to the front of the class to get my free lunch ticket and how that felt. It’s my responsibility to help when I can.” But not long after beginning the project, the kids were shocked when a 5-year-old many of them knew died in a horrifying quadruple murder. To cope, Natalie turned her focus to the pageant. “I wanted to do something for the kids to counteract that ugliness,” she says. In June, the show came off without a hitch. “I invited the police officer who had investigated the murders,” says Natalie. “He had been haunted by what he witnessed, and he said seeing the pageant was like a waterfall spilling over him, flooding him with new images of happy children.” Natalie’s hope is that others follow her lead. “You don’t need to be a pop star,” she says. “These children are beautiful and creative, and they deserve every opportunity. There is a Head Start or its equivalent in every town in America.” Find a Head Start at eclkc.ohs.acf.hhs.gov/center-locator. N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 8 G H

During the water crisis in Flint, MI, D E T R O I T native Ali Rose VanOverbeke returned to her home state to volunteer with the Red Cross. As a designer, she was struck by both the man-made emergency of undrinkable water and the environmental disaster created by the temporary solution: thousands of empty water bottles piling up each day. She drew on her fashion smarts to recycle the plastic into eyeglasses, tapping family members and crowdsourcing funds to make her Genusee designs a reality.

Daisy Cakes got its start in a makeshift kitchen behind Kim Nelson’s parents’ S O U T H C A R O L I N A home, where she cranked out her mom’s special pound cake for community events. She eventually made her way to the ABC show Shark Tank, where she picked up funding to increase production. Now her company generates 20,000 cakes a year from an expanded kitchen.

Gratitude has been proven time and time again to make us feel happier and less stressed — and even sleep better. One study showed that people who wrote down what they were grateful for felt up to 25% happier. Make it a habit by keeping a gratitude jar on your kitchen counter, along with some slips of paper and pens. Experts say the more specific you are in what you write, the better: On a rotten day, encourage your kids to think about one thing that’s going right. Pour guests a glass of wine to sip as they contemplate what makes their lives fulfilling. And don’t forget to pause during your busy day to do one yourself. It’s a powerful thing.

work less, thrive more Shaving some time off a long workweek can help your health, according to a new largescale study. Women who worked 45 or more hours per week had a 63% greater risk of type 2 diabetes than those who worked a few hours less. “Long hours may prompt a chronic stress response in the body, increasing the risk of hormonal abnormalities and insulin resistance,” says Mahée Gilbert-Ouimet, Ph.D., of the Institute for Work & Health in Toronto. This, in turn, can up your chances of developing the disease. Aim for a 35- to 40hour or lower workweek; if that’s not possible, be sure to stay on top of your health with regular screenings. —Alyssa Jung

A study in the journal Headache found that people hit with over nine episodes a month had more dark moods. This is probably because of too little serotonin — those who experience migraines tend to have less of the mood-regulating neurotransmitter in their blood, says study author Fu-Chi Yang, M.D., Ph.D. Luckily, once you find a treatment that works for you, says Dr. Yang, your depressive and anxious feelings should also float away. — Emma Hassemer N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 8 G H

By using yogurt in your green bean casserole (or on your potatoes), you’ll get a lowerin-saturated-fat alternative to sour cream with plenty of calcium, magnesium and potassium — minerals linked to lowering blood pressure. An extra benefit of this trade? Yogurt is higher in protein than sour cream, making any dish more filling and nutrient-dense.

In lieu of sugar-loaded canned cranberry sauce, mix tangy fresh cranberries with naturally sweet dried apricots for a tasty Thanksgiving Day condiment. Along with antioxidants, this fruity blend delivers minerals like iron, a key compound involved in transporting oxygen to cells throughout your body, a process that helps to keep you feeling energized.

Here’s an easy lower-calorie trick your family will barely notice: Replace half of your mashed potatoes with cooked mashed cauliflower to sneak in extra vitamin C and folate. Cruciferous veggies such as cauliflower also contain glucosinolates, beneficial compounds that may help lower cancer risk by protecting your cells from harmful DNA damage.

When it comes to the salad on your holiday table, GH nutritionist–approved California walnuts are a more hearthealthy and satisfying (and less salty!) topping than croutons. They have up to 5 g of protein and 2 g of fiber per 185-calorie serving. Walnuts are also packed with plant-based omega-3s, a type of polyunsaturated fatty acid linked to boosting cognition.

SAFE STORAGE

Once and for all, is it OK to reheat leftovers in plastic containers? A: There’s been some scary buzz about bisphenol A (BPA), a plastics chemical that’s been linked to longterm risk of chronic disease, but — whew! — reheating in plastic that says “microwave safe” is OK. The FDA regulates containers approved for microwave use to make sure dangerous levels of chemicals don’t get into your grub. In fact, when the Good Housekeeping Institute tested food zapped in these containers, we found no detectable BPA.

“Our tests included tomato sauce [acidic] and gravy [high-fat], considered likely to leach BPA from the plastic,” says Betty Gold, GH Institute senior editor and product analyst. Generally speaking, research supports the idea that what you eat is far more important than the storage mode when it comes to your health. Stockpile leftover veggies and lean protein to repurpose nutritious fare, and be choosy about indulgences. Remember: Thanksgiving is a day, not a season! N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 8 G H

With Cuomo’s help, Sandra was the driving force behind New York State’s No Excuses law, a $91 million effort to provide the most advanced cancer-screening program in the country. By absorbing the cost of co-pays and follow-ups for residents of New York and extending testing centers’ hours, the law seeks to eliminate common barriers — cost and time — that patients cite as stumbling blocks to getting screenings. “The earlier you catch it, the longer you get to live,” says Sandra. “Period. End of story.” And she hasn’t stopped yet: She’s traveling this fall to speak directly to elected officials in multiple states to prod them to use the law as a blueprint for similar initiatives. “Write to your governor,” she urges women. THE SCIENCE OF

DIGESTION Think your smartphone is a feat of engineering? Well, it’s got nothing on your gut. Read on for the inner workings of this complex system, with tips, tricks and watch-outs for a happier, healthier tummy BY LIZ KRIEGER

Adam Voorhes/Gallery Stock.

THE BASICS Mmm…garlic. Or maybe butter and sugar. As soon as the smell of something yummy wafts from the kitchen, your digestive system kicks into gear. Starting with your tongue and ending with your colon, “it’s an amazingly complex system,” says Chris South, M.D., a gastroenterologist at the Ohio Gastroenterology & Liver Institute. “The digestive system has so many zones and organs, all united in the same goal: to turn food into fuel by extracting the nutrients we need.” With so many players doing their own things, your personal food processing plant is like a symphony orchestra: When all of them perform well, the result is beautiful music that simply flows. Should one or two musicians space out or be unable to play their parts, all of a sudden the group can sound more like middle school band practice. From fork to flush

YOUR BODY ON FOOD

D I D YO U KN OW? Your colon’s bacteria make up the lion’s share of your immune system, supporting the body’s natural defenses.

EYES

Behold, a gooey wedge of Death by Chocolate! When you visually take note of the texture, color and shape, all of a sudden you want it, even if you weren’t craving cake before.

NOSE

Scent receptors register aroma, and this may lead you to begin to salivate.

EPIGLOTTIS

MOUTH

When you swallow, it covers your trachea, keeping that cake from going down the “wrong pipe” and toward your lungs (cough!). When all goes well, the food heads through the upper esophageal sphincter, a ring-shaped muscle, and then into the esophagus.

The saliva pooling in there contains the enzyme amylase, which starts digesting the cake as soon as it makes it onto your tongue. The liquid also helps lubricate the food and mold it to slide into the pharynx (your throat).

ESOPHAGUS

Involuntary muscle contractions called peristalsis keep the food moving along. Then the sphincter at the bottom of your esophagus opens up to allow the food into your stomach.

STOMACH Welcome

to the hydrochloric acid bathtub! Here, muscle contractions grind stuff up even more and ready it to travel to the small intestine. For most people, the majority of what has been eaten leaves the stomach within two hours.

PANCREAS + LIVER

The pancreas shoots juices containing enzymes to break down carbs, fat and protein into the small intestine. The liver sends bile, via the gallbladder and bile ducts, to digest fat.

Also known as your colon and at least three feet long, it absorbs water from food, turning whatever’s left into poop. It’s also where trillions of (mostly good) bacteria help finish digestion and make certain vitamins.

78

G H N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 8

RECTUM

The final stretch is where waste waits before being released. This area of the colon has a lot of nerves, which alert you when it’s full and when you need to find a bathroom.

This freakishly long (20 feet!) tubular organ is where the bulk of your body’s nutrient absorption happens, via fingerlike projections (villi) that cover the coils along the inside.

T IMES A DAY That’s how often most people pass gas. Avoiding sugar alcohols (like maltitol and sorbitol) and bubbly drinks can dial down the frequency.

Tummy trouble

5 CAUSES OF DIGESTIVE DRAMA Check out these surprising reasons for GI distress

1 YOUR MIND

2 A.M. COFFEE If you start the morning with a cup or more, the stimulant acts in two ways — and quickly. It speeds up the GI tract overall, Dr. Eswaran says. But it also causes rectal hypersensitivity, leading to contractions and then to your hasty search for a restroom. The fix: Time your coffee right, and be aware that for some people, any very hot or very cold beverage can cause the contractions, she says.

80

G H N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 8

3 TRAVEL Racing to get to the gate, new-to-you foods, not taking in enough liquids, a change in routine and the sedentary nature of travel slow down your GI tract. The result can be constipation. The fix: Move as much as possible, drink lots of water and go easy on alcohol, which can be dehydrating. To ease symptoms, take 200 to 400 mg of magnesium citrate a day, says Vincent Pedre, M.D., author of Happy Gut. It attracts water to the colon, keeping things moving.

4 ANTIBIOTICS Medicine you take to fend off an infection can sometimes leave your gut depleted of the “good” bacteria it once had, rendering you susceptible to “bad” bacteria creeping in, says Dr. South. This can lead to diarrhea. The fix: Eat prebiotic (i.e., highfiber) foods, which the healthy bacteria in your gut feed on; this can help them flourish. While many pop a probiotic supplement as soon as they get a Z-Pak, there’s not a ton of science to back up the idea that these help, says Dr. South.

5 YOUR CYCLE If you tend to get diarrhea when you have your period, it’s no coincidence. Prostaglandin hormones can trigger muscular activity in your intestines, says Mary Jane Minkin, M.D., a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the Yale School of Medicine. The fix: If it’s a big problem, ask your doc about taking birth control pills, which prevent ovulation. You can also try ibuprofen, which blocks the production of more prostaglandins, says Dr. Minkin.

PUT YOUR GUT IN A GOOD MOOD

Having a healthy GI tract may play a significant role in mood regulation, says GH Nutrition Director Jaclyn London, M.S., R.D. That’s thanks to probiotics, beneficial bacteria found in your gut that can help improve digestion and the absorption of nutrients. So how do you get better, stronger probiotics? By eating foods high in prebiotic fiber, which help these “friendly” bacteria thrive. Add more asparagus, artichokes, cabbage, apples, oats, pulses, nuts and seeds to lend a hand in getting your gut to stay “friendlier.”

Adam Voorhes/Gallery Stock.

Know how your stomach can act up when you’re nervous? “Like a direct Internet connection from your head to your gut, the vagus nerve runs from the brain through the abdomen,” says Shanti Eswaran, M.D., an associate professor of gastroenterology at the University of Michigan. “So if something is going on in your head, that nerve is affected,” causing diarrhea (when liquid fills your intestine) or constipation, generally defined as “going” fewer than three times a week. You may also feel more abdominal pain. The fix: Do what lowers stress, like meditation or exercise; if emotions are a big cause of the problem, cognitive behavioral therapy or antidepressants can help.

Health

Eat for a happy GI tract

FOODS YOUR TUMMY WILL LOVE These four items are must-munches, says GH’s London.

GINGER

OATMEAL

POTATOES

YOGURT

If you’re queasy, compounds in ginger — fresh, candied or in tea — can halt the stimulation of GI tract receptors that make you feel icky. Research has linked regular consumption to less morning sickness and chemo-induced nausea.

This grain is loaded with soluble and insoluble fiber, which can absorb water and bulk up your stool, and that helps keep things moving through your GI tract. By keeping you regular, the fiber also eases gas pressure.

Both white and sweet spuds can be calming for your belly when it’s upset, because they’re binding — meaning they absorb excess water in your intestines and help you keep your, well, poop together.

Recovering from a stomach bug? Add plain unsweetened Greek yogurt to your slow buildup to eating as usual. Its live and active cultures can help boost production of gut bacteria that will aid in getting your GI tract back to normal.

call the doc if you have… UNEXPLAINED BLOATING OR PELVIC PAIN

In rare cases, this could signal ovarian cancer, especially if you feel full after eating very little, says Dr. Minkin. Bloating with frequent tummy pain and diarrhea might be due to an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) such as ulcerative colitis.

BLOODY STOOLS

It may be a hemorrhoid, says Dr. South, but always bring this up with your M.D. Blood could be a sign of IBD or be caused by a growth or tumor. PALE POOP

There’s no polite way to say this: Moving your body helps you move your bowels. The muscles in your digestive system are positively affected even by something as simple as brisk walking and staying active throughout the day, says Sandra Fryhofer, M.D., an internist in Atlanta. When the muscles in your body are active, the natural squeezing of muscles in your gut (peristalsis) can get stimulated, which aids in moving everything through. In a study of 62,000 women, those who reported daily physical activity were about half as likely to experience constipation as those who worked out less than once a week.

PRESENTED BY ALLERGAN

K E E P A SYM P TO M D IA RY

Many patients are too grossed out or embarrassed to go into detail about their digestive issues with their doctors, so make a list! Jot down your issues —  bloating, pain, constipation, funky-colored stools — as well as how long you’ve had them and what you’ve tried, and then simply hand it to your doc. While you can solve many of these problems through changes in your diet or exercise routine and even by taking over-the-counter fiber supplements, there are also R X options for IBS, Crohn’s disease and other digestive dramas that may bring you some relief.

UNEXPLAINED WEIGHT LOSS

This could signify a range of things, including celiac disease, says Brigid Boland, M.D., an IBD expert at the University of California at San Diego. Other potential causes: Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis or, rarely, cancer of the colon, pancreas or gallbladder. PAIN IN YOUR LEFT TUMMY

Severe discomfort with a fever could mean diverticulitis, an infection in the large intestine. You’ll be given antibiotics, says Dr. Boland, and then start a diet rich in fiber.

E X E R C I S E R EG U L A R LY, B E M O R E R EG U L A R

In general, your stool should have some green, yellow or brown in it, says Dr. South. If it’s grayish or super-light, there could be a liver problem or a bile duct blockage.

How to Tackle

SEASONAL STAINS

Save washable fall and winter fabrics from these mess makers in just a few steps Candle Wax

1 Let the wax cool or hold a plastic bag of ice against it. Gently pry off the hardened wax with a spoon or dull knife. Place the fabric between paper towels and press with a warm, dry (no steam) iron, rotating the towels as they absorb wax. Rub in liquid detergent. Wash in warm or hot water with fabric-safe bleach.

Pumpkin

2 Scrape off excess and flush with cold water. Rub in liquid laundry detergent or pretreater. Wait five minutes, then wash in the hottest water that’s safe with a fabric-safe bleach.

Cranberry Sauce

3 Rinse with cold water.

Soak 15 minutes in a mix of 1 Tbsp white vinegar and 1/2 tsp liquid detergent in 1 qt cool water. Launder as usual in warm water with fabric-safe bleach.

Pine Tree Sap

4 Soak in rubbing alcohol to soften, then gently peel off what you can. Work in more alcohol to dissolve any remaining stain. Rinse. Rub in pretreater, and wash in the warmest water that’s safe.

Apple Cider

5 Flush with cold water. Work in liquid laundry detergent or pretreater, and wash in warm or, if safe, hot water. If the stain remains, rewash and add in a fabric-safe bleach.

4 Tricks to

SIMPLIFY STORAGE Pack up out-of-season clothing like a pro Organize

1 likes together. Designating one box or bag for casual tops, another for pants, a third for dressy items and so on means you are folding and stashing similar items at once for a speedier and more orderly approach. Add a label (if you can’t see in), and next season finding what you want will be a cinch.

Wash smarter.

2 Pick a dedicated time to

GREY DROP FRONT SWEATER BOX , $30, CONTAINERSTORE.COM

UNSNAG A SWE AT ER.

Slip the pulled loop into a bobby pin. Gently push it through the knit and draw the loose thread through to the back.

launder only the items you’re storing so items go from the dryer to storage. If you mix them in with your usual loads, you’ll waste time separating them from the clothes your family is wearing now.

Steam, don’t iron.

3 To dewrinkle items before storing and save time next season, opt for a steamer (just let damp items dry). It’s faster than an iron and easy to use right where you are packing.

Stock up on acid-

4 free tissue paper. Available online or at craft stores, this paper has a neutral pH and none of the acids that can leach out of regular tissue to stain fabrics. Use it as a cushion between items and to keep sequins and beads from snagging other fabrics. Stuff it inside boxes to prevent clothes from shifting and wrinkling and inside hats to help them keep their shape.

MEND A MOTH HOLE. Stitch small holes from the back,

crisscrossing to the loops on each side. Don’t pull, or the fabric will pucker. Or, take the item to a dry cleaner or reweaver, who’ll use threads from a hidden area to repair it.

E ASY WAYS TO

CO N Q U E R C LOS E T C LU T T E R

88

Make hangers do more.

Invest in shelf dividers.

Use the back of the door.

Relocate coats.

Who says only one garment per hanger? Place two pairs of pants on the crossbar, or clip two thinner skirts together. Better yet, consider tiered hangers that hold multiples of the same item vertically.

Keep stacks of sweaters, pants and purses neat and accessible with plastic or metal shelf dividers. They clip in place, are adjustable and prevent items from tumbling into a jumbled mess.

Sure, a shoe caddy can go there, but not all closets are deep enough for one. Instead, mount hooks, like Command, or hang a ready-made organizer for scarves, belts and accessories there.

If you store clothes and coats in the same space, stop. Not only does outerwear eat up room, but it gets worn more and cleaned less, so it’s best not to have it rub up against clean clothes in your closet.

SMALL & MIGHTY MACHINES Take the stress out of laundry day with this compact washer and dryer set from Miele. Great for even the tiniest rooms, the duo can be stacked and tucked away in a closet — no venting needed — or lined up side by side. Both pack serious power and genius features like a full wash cycle in under an hour, a SoftSteam dryer setting for less ironing and Wi-Fi connectivity (start a cycle, adjust settings and check on wash status right in the app). LAB RESULTS Strong performance in Cleaning Lab tests—cycles finished quickly and the duo handled large loads. The washer’s TwinDos tech measures and adds Miele detergent and bleach alternative for you (though you can still use your own), and the system impressively removed set-in stains like grass and mustard.

WASHER SAVER Keep your machine looking and smelling fresh with this pick from Tide — a cleaner for your cleaner! Once a month, run an empty hot-water cycle with the oxygen bleach formula to dissolve detergent and mineral buildup even in places you can’t see. No scrubbing or reaching needed — all you have to do is press Start.

LAB RESULTS We put it to the test on the machines our pros use daily in the Cleaning Lab! In just one cycle, the powder easily zapped detergent residue from top- and front-loading machines and removed the musty odors these deposits leave behind. Green Your Life This month, the GH Institute and Made Safe are hosting our annual Raise the Green Bar Summit, a daylong event designed to help companies create more sustainable products and practices for you! Clean-living advocate (and Hollywood A-lister!) Alicia Silverstone is speaking this year — we asked her for a sneak peek at her daily green-living strategies.

5 THINGS NOT TO BE CLUELESS ABOUT The best-selling actress, author, entrepreneur and mom started her blog, The Kind Life, to inspire others toward health, happiness and doing better for the planet. Here’s how she does it:

Alexei Hay.

Cut back on plastic. Alicia I bring my own tote bags with me when I’m out shopping, eat fewer processed foods (so there’s less packaging waste!), and travel with a reusable water bottle. When I fly, I pack the empty bottle, then fill it up once I pass security. GH Lab Lowdown Plastic food containers are often cross-contaminated with grease and leftovers, so they get rejected at recycling facilities and end up in landfills. Improve the odds of success by scraping out food and rinsing them thoroughly before placing them in the proper recycling bins. N OV E M B E R 2 0 1 8 G H

Alicia Think about how much clothing gets thrown away. It’s incredible. You want to be reusing! Almost 11 million tons of textiles go to landfills each year, where they don’t break down quickly. When I need something for myself or my son, Bear, my go-to is secondhand. I shop at places like The RealReal or eBay, Crossroads Trading and Buffalo Exchange. GH Lab Lowdown Many retailers, like Patagonia, Madewell and Eileen Fisher, offer take-back programs, collecting their used clothes to donate, recycle or reuse. Policies vary, so ask your favorite store about theirs. Amazon has partnered with Give Back Box on a program that lets you fill old Amazon boxes with clothes and print a free shipping label, and it goes right to charity.

Choose organic. Alicia When I was pregnant with Bear, my midwife suggested I take prenatal vitamins. I couldn’t find a line that was chemicalfree and vegan, so I set out to create one. That’s how my supplements line, Mykind Organics, was born: I wanted to take a vitamin

Compost on your counter. Alicia Any food scraps I repurpose as compost, and I often leave green waste from my garden on the ground like mulch. GH Lab Lowdown Contact your municipality to find out what kinds of composting programs they support. Often if there isn’t curbside pickup, you can collect food scraps in your freezer, then drop them off weekly at your local farmers’ market.

WE’RE GIVING OUT GREEN AWARDS!

Consumers are asking us more and more to help them find products that won’t lead to extra plastics in landfills and the oceans. That’s why we’re launching the #raisethegreenbar Awards at this year’s Summit to recognize products that have implemented less packaging.

Eat more plants.

made from the organic ingredients I eat daily. The formulas include extracts from over 30 organic fruits and veggies — no binders or fillers — that health-conscious moms like me can feel good about. GH Lab Lowdown When shopping, look for trusted emblems. On food, the USDA Organic emblem means a product has met federal standards. Beyond food, check for the Green Good Housekeeping Seal, which assesses a product’s entire life cycle, or Made Safe’s seal, which recognizes products made with nontoxic ingredients.

Alicia Animal farming causes 51% of greenhouse gas emissions and is a leading cause of deforestation, biodiversity loss and water pollution. I try to lead by example with Bear. I love to make black-eyed pea croquettes and seasonal veggie soup. GH Lab Lowdown Eating vegetarian just one day a week can save the annual greenhouse gas equivalent of driving 1,160 miles. GH’s Nutrition Director, Jaclyn London, M.S., R.D., recommends peanuts as a great plant-based protein source. A nutritious swap for meat, these legumes are filled with protein, heart-healthy fats, fiber and antioxidants. Lesser-known fact: They’re as good for the planet as for you, thanks to water-efficient growing practices that use a mere 5 gallons of H2O per ounce (some other nuts need more than 15 times that!). GH Nutritionist Approved Pick Hampton Farms Peanuts

AT YOUR HOME ASSESS YOUR IMPACT You can find out your carbon footprint at nature.org. This site will let you discover which of your sustainability efforts could help most, like opting for public transportation or limiting the use of your air conditioner. SHOP WITH THE PLANET IN MIND We’re always excited to share brands that are making green strides, like Raise the Green Bar presenting sponsor P&G Fabric Care. Its new Tide purclean detergent contains plant-based ingredients, comes in a recyclable bottle (including the cap!) and is made in a facility that sends zero manufacturing waste to landfills, using 100% renewable wind power electricity. P&G has also committed to full transparency for fragrances by 2020. LIGHT WITH LEDS Opt for more energyefficient bulbs, like LEDs, over old-school incandescent ones — they’re longer-lasting, and they offer a range of light options from cool to warm. Swapping in an LED for just one traditional incandescent bulb can save you about $80 a year!

LAB RESULTS

FOR A 10-IN. SKILLET

MADEINCOOKWARE.COM

Our kitchen pros were blown away by the pieces’ outstanding heat distribution, quick boiling and even searing. The nonstick coating was so effective that we could scramble eggs or sauté veggies without oil or butter—they slid right off the pan!

No other cookware browned meat more perfectly from edge to edge or boiled water faster. Go ahead and use metal tongs to flip chops—no scratching here. Unlike that on most stainless steel pans, the dark finish resisted showing stains after frying over high heat.

We were impressed by how quickly the skillet heated and how evenly it browned and seared a sirloin. You’ll need a little elbow grease to get pieces looking as good as new when scrubbing them by hand, but luckily they’re all dishwasher safe.

106

GH

In our tests, scrambled eggs and pancakes cooked evenly with zero sticking, and marinara sauce simmered steadily even if we didn’t stir it. Whether you hand-wash or use the dishwasher, these pieces clean up beautifully thanks to their dark nonstick finish inside and out.

Spread the holiday cheer It’s the most food-filled day of the year, but you don’t have to ditch your diet to celebrate Thanksgiving dinner. I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter! ® is the smooth and creamy, better-for-you option with 70% less saturated fat than butter, so you can still enjoy this holiday season. Kick off the festivities with these crowd-pleasing recipes that pack a flavorful punch with fewer calories.

HEALTHY FOR THE HOLIDAYS

Lighten up any holiday party by bringing your own dish to share. By ensuring there’s something healthy and delicious to indulge in, you’re more likely to stay on track.

Build a better breakfast. Start your day off strong with a healthy, protein-based breakfast before the main event.

ULTIMATE CREAMY MASHED POTATOES Bring 3 lbs. Russet potatoes, peeled and cubed, 1 c. chicken broth and enough cold water to cover potatoes to a boil over high heat in large saucepot. Reduce heat and simmer uncovered until potatoes are tender, about 15 min. drain. Combine potatoes with ¼ c. half & half, 6 Tbsp. I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter!® Spread, ¼ tsp. salt, ⅛ ground black pepper until smooth and creamy.

CHICKEN SCAMPI BITES Melt 2 Tbsp. I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter!® Spread in large nonstick skillet over med.-high heat and cook 2 large cloves garlic, finely chopped with ¼ tsp. salt until fragrant, about 1 min. Add 1 lb. boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into 24 pieces and cook, stirring occasionally, until chicken is lightly browned and thoroughly cooked, about 7 min. Meanwhile, grate peel and squeeze 2 tsp. juice from lemon. Add lemon juice to skillet and cook 1 min. Remove from heat and stir in lemon peel and 1 Tbsp. chopped fresh parsley leaves, tossing chicken until evenly coated. Skewer 24 grape tomatoes and chicken onto toothpicks and arrange on serving plate. Melt remaining 1 Tbsp. Spread in same skillet, scraping brown bits from bottom of pan; drizzle over chicken.

Sip on something light. Cheers to the holidays with a low-calorie cocktail that doesn’t pack on the guilt. Try using sparkling wine as the base for a festive and diet-friendly drink.

Roasting pan from roasted turkey (recipe above) and its contents (turkey removed) cup dry white wine or hard cider cups low-sodium chicken broth Tbsp unsalted butter cup all-purpose flour sprigs fresh thyme Kosher salt and pepper

1. Remove and discard vegetables, thyme and neck from roasting pan. Strain pan drippings into fat separator (or measuring cup); let stand 5 min. so fat rises to top. Leaving fat behind (or spooning it off if not using separator), pour juices from bottom into large (4-cup) measuring cup. 2. Place empty roasting pan across 2 stove burners on medium-high. Add wine and cook, stirring and scraping up any browned bits, 1 min.

Sprinkle flour over top and cook, whisking, until deep brown, 4 to 5 min. 5. Gradually whisk in broth mixture; bring to a boil. Add thyme sprigs, reduce heat and simmer, stirring occasionally, until thickened, 8 to 12 min. If necessary, season with salt and pepper. Strain just before serving. Makes about 31/2 cups. How we test

Our engineers and analysts first ensure that each toy meets all safety standards. Then we evaluate assembly process, construction and durability; check for pinch points; and droptest them to ensure that they won’t shatter into small pieces with sharp edges or pose a choking hazard. Final decisions come from nearly 100 children, ages 1 to 14, who assess the fun factor at home and in our Toy Lab!

MONTHS+ TEACHING HEDGEHOG Little ones will have a ball playing with Spike’s bright quills. Once they’re done, hide all the pegs in the middle so none mysteriously disappear the next time they want to play. Lab Lowdown The pegs are easy for tiny hands to grasp and great for developing fine motor skills. You can also use them as a sneaky way to teach colors and numbers while fostering fun.

NO-MESS DOUGH Play mad scientist with this crazy compound (a cross between sand and clay) that you can stretch, mold and squeeze. It even comes in a pocket-size container to keep kids busy on car trips or plane rides. Lab Lowdown It was a total hit with 3- and 4-yearolds — they played with it the longest of our testers, but kids of all ages were drawn to it.

MOLDABLE BEACH MAGIC The only thing better than building a sandcastle at the shore? Building one at home! Make endless creations with this special sand that looks like the real deal but won’t dry out. Lab Lowdown The sand is super low-maintenance — even if you accidentally leave it uncovered overnight, it won’t dry out. We found the grains slightly difficult to get out of carpet, so set the box on a table you can easily wipe down. Spin Master Kinetic Sand Beach Sand Kingdom, $20

RESCUE STUFFIES Adopt one of these pets (they come as mystery fur balls!) and treat it to much-needed TLC. Wash, brush and dry its matted fur to see if your new friend is a dog, bunny or cat. Lab Lowdown Even though kids weren’t able to get them as smooth and pristine-looking as the box showed, they were still popular with little animal lovers. Pro tip: Stick the toys in the dryer for a few minutes to help speed up the grooming.

3-D ANIMAL COLORING SET Budding artists will love drawing on these pets. Create your mini masterpieces, then give the furry friends a bath to “erase” the color and start again. Lab Lowdown Patience needed: It took about five minutes of soaking and some scrubbing to remove the marker in Lab tests.

MUST-HAVE MINI DOLLHOUSE Polly Pockets are back! Kids will have a blast playing with Polly and friends on adventures like DJing a party and snowboarding. Lab Lowdown Kids go nuts for anything tiny, and these compacts are just under five inches tall. We also love that they snap shut to keep small pieces from going missing.

DIY SQUISHIES The trendy toy is now customizable! Kids can transform things like a blank cupcake or a dragon with their own designs. FASHIONABLY FEEDING THE HOMELESS

ACE PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES LEAVE THE KIDS AT HOME. It may be tempting to bring your child along for the meeting — you are talking about him or her, after all — but that can actually keep you from getting anything accomplished. "The teacher may not feel as comfortable talking openly with the child right there listening," says Michelle Hall, an elementary school teacher in Natchitoches, LA. Hall also cautions against bringing along younger siblings who require supervision. Try swapping babysitting time with a fellow mom so you’ll get a one-on-one meeting.

where she needs to improve? Will she be ready to move up to the next level? How is her social development progressing? If you hit a lull, ask the teacher if there is anything you haven’t discussed that is important to cover. And you should also inquire about ways you can support your child at home, says Hall. For example, the teacher may be able to recommend a book or game that enhances math skills, or a field trip that supports the history curriculum.

BE ON TIME. Some schools allow as little as three minutes per conference, and if you’re late, you may miss out — or mess up the schedule for other parents.

START WITH THE POSITIVE. Beginning with a compliment or anecdote (e.g., “My daughter always raves about the books you assign the class to read!”) before expressing concerns can go a long way toward connecting with the teacher.

FOCUS YOUR QUESTIONS. Your school days may be over, but take a cue from students: Go to the classroom prepared to discuss your concerns. Key questions: What is the goal of this course or year? How has my child grown so far? Are there areas

BE OPEN-MINDED. This is an opportunity for the teacher to bring up concerns too —  and they may not be easy to hear. “Remember, we’re on your child’s side, and all we want is to see him or her succeed,” says Hall. — Alexis Reliford

WHY IT EARNED THE GH SEAL Neutrogena’s Oil-Free Eye Makeup Remover aced our chemists’ evaluations, leaving virtually zero trace of product behind — no matter how long-lasting products claimed to be!

1

UNMATCHED PERFORMER

Great for even the toughest waterproof eyeliner, it dissolved eye makeup better than 28 other brands (some four times its price!) in our Beauty Lab tests.

2

SUPER-GENTLE FORMULA

Our Lab experts and testers agreed that it was mild on skin and effective in just a couple of passes — with no need to scrub or pull on the delicate eye area.

3

DUAL-PHASE TECHNOLOGY

You’ll notice it has two layers of liquid — those are separate oiland water-loving phases. When mixed, they dissolve makeup residue and then wipe skin clean.

TESTER FAVORITE

4 Consumers gave it top marks for quickly removing makeup and making skin feel silky and smooth, not greasy. “I loved how effortless and nonirritating it is!” raved one.
