want to carve pumpkins?
It’s OK if you don’t. Jack-o’-lanterns are hard! I can never get the eyes to line up, even when I draw them on first. My go-to pumpkin display is a big gorgeous wooden bowl filled with mini pumpkins on my dining room table. This year I’m switching things up by using a copper bowl. Done! Here at the magazine, we love thinking of new ways to decorate for fall, a season that doesn’t have to be all about pumpkins and pine cones. It’s fun to push past the ideas everyone’s done before and break out of the traditional orange-and-brown palette. We say, invite purple, navy blue, and golden yellow to your autumn decorating party! A few more ideas: • Add cozy touches. Toss a few sweater-like throw pillows onto your bed or sofa. See our fave finds on page 58. • Get some colorful baskets. They’re the accessory right now; plants and flowers look great in them. See page 10. • Hang a felt wreath. There’s a cool, colorful one on page 64. • Spray-paint pumpkins. Yes, you can! See page 55. • Or skip the pumpkin patch altogether and bring home one of the cuties below. And please, spare yourself the I-didn’tDIY guilt—you can carve a turkey next month.

“This baby pink reminds me of the clouds you see at sunset. I paired it with light teals and white for a soft, pretty look in this little girl’s room, but it would be really striking next to navy or dark gray.” —Kirsten Krason, House of Jade Interiors, South Jordan, UT
lazy sunday “Most people use a bold color on the wall and a subtle one on the ceiling, but I flipped things around. The cheery blue resembles a bright, clear sky—perfect for such a light-filled living room. SARAH SHERMAN SAMUEL
“This homeowner is drawn to a bunch of different styles—traditional, rustic, country, and modern!—so to combine them all in a way that’s eclectic but still cohesive, I relied on a limited color palette of white, black, and one pop of yellow,” says Sarah Sherman Samuel, a designer based in Los Angeles. The dark gray sofa is by Stem, and the coffee table is from CB2. The yellow chair from Crate & Barrel plays up all the sunlight that hits the room.

rainbow of pumpkins
Play with the full spectrum of colors instead of just browns and oranges. Austin, TX, blogger Kara Whitten of A Kailo Chic Life spray-painted artificial pumpkins (picked up at crafts stores) nine different shades of Montana Gold paint. “Using an assortment of sizes makes the display even more eye-catching,” she says. Some greenery—a faux–magnolia leaf garland—completes the look.

1. Remove and discard the old shade and the finial, if the lamp has one. 2. If the lamp is flat on top, cut a piece of leather to fit the top and attach it with double-sided tape. Or spray-paint the top to match your leather. 3. Cut a piece of leather large enough to wrap around the lamp so the edges overlap slightly at the seam (we used about half a yard). Outline each side of the lamp with heavy-duty double-sided tape. Adhere the leather to one side, then wrap it tightly around, one side at a time. Add a piece of doublesided tape at the seam to secure. 4. Hot-glue nailhead trim to each side of the lamp as shown. how bad is it to never use the emergency brake?
“The majority of the time, nothing will happen if you don’t apply the emergency brake, though you want to use it on hills as a precaution,” says Tony Molla, vice president of the Automotive Service Association and a certified technician in North Richland Hills, TX. (That’s for automatic transmissions; with manual ones, put it on whenever you park.) A little Mechanics 101: When you shift into Park, a metal pin called a parking pawl locks the transmission, preventing the wheels from rotating. A parking brake provides backup through a cable-operated system that locks your rear brakes. You want that extra protection on an incline, on the off chance there’s a transmission fail or a freak accident. Says Molla, “If a car backs into yours, the laws of physics say that your vehicle could slam into the one behind it.” Just make sure the brake is released before driving, or it can damage the brake system.

good question
You won’t be a witch as long as you separately offer nut-free goodies, too. It’s the considerate— and safe—thing to do: Nearly 6 million U.S. children have allergies to foods, peanuts being one of the most common. “Providing allergy-free items helps every trick-or-treater feel included, and lets their parents relax,” says Sharon Schweitzer, founder of the international etiquette consulting group Access to Culture. No nuts hardly means no fun: Think plain Hershey’s Kisses, jelly beans, or Skittles, kept in a different bowl from peanut butter cups and the like to ensure kids don’t grab the wrong candy—and to avoid cross-contamination. It’s also great to offer glow sticks, sticker packs, and bubbles. Tack up a sign that tells visiting goblins you have nut-free candy and nonfood treats, or put out a teal plastic pumpkin or one painted that shade—the new Halloween symbol of an allergy-friendly home.
SUPER BAD! (if you mix nut and nut-free candy) NOT BAD AT ALL! (if you separate them)
how bad is it to let the water run while brushing your teeth?
Do the math! Today’s faucets release about 2.2 gallons per minute. Brush twice a day for the recommended two minutes, and that’s 8.8 gallons daily—and 3,212 gallons annually. “To put that into perspective, 3,200 gallons is enough to fill a small above-ground pool,” says Tracy Quinn, Natural Resources Defense Council’s California director of water efficiency. And that’s just at your house. Nationally, if everyone left the tap on while brushing, it would waste about 1 trillion gallons each year. So turn it off. After a week or two, you’ll get into the routine. Put a sticky note on your mirror as a reminder.

good question
how bad is it to playwrestle with your dog?
Leave WrestleMania for TV: Dogs can take pretend aggression the wrong way. The headlocks, pinning down, or dragging that you consider fun and games can teach your pet that it’s acceptable to jump on people or nip at them, says Kim Brophey, a dog behavior consultant based in Asheville, NC. Avoid any roughhousing that pits someone as the aggressor and involves restraint. “Healthy play should have an equal balance of power,” says Brophey, author of Meet Your Dog. Good kinds of interactions include pawing at each other, playful bumping, and chasing around. “If the dog doesn’t stop when you do, or he jumps on you or bites, end the activity immediately so he doesn’t get the message the behavior is OK,” says Brophey.
REALLY BAD!
Besides getting the side-eye from folks in first class who paid good money (or used good air miles) for the privilege of having their own potty, you could get blocked by the flight attendant. “In a post-9/11 environment, it’s about the safety and security of the flight deck,” says Taylor Garland, a spokesperson for the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA. “That area has to be kept as clear as possible so flight attendants can protect the cockpit.” That’s the main, and understandable, reason flight attendants shoo coach passengers away. If there’s an extenuating circumstance—like the main lavatory is blocked by the beverage cart, or there’s a medical situation and a too-long line in coach—head over to first class, and just explain why to the flight attendant there.

how bad is it to use the first-class bathroom if you’re flying coach?
good question
One glass of vino can have that pleasant drowsy effect, as you may well know. Whether you’re drinking red or white, the alcohol it contains reduces the speed at which the brain’s neurons fire. But it isn’t healthy to use either as a sleep aid. “The rest you get is not actually restful—the alcohol can disrupt the deepest parts of the sleep cycle,” says Ilene Rosen, M.D., program director of the University of Pennsylvania Sleep Fellowship. That’s why you may wake up tired or sooner than you need to, since once the alcohol clears out of your system, a rebound effect happens. So much for relaxation. The best-case scenario: Chill with a drink no closer than four hours before bedtime. Hey, there, happy hour!
KINDA BAD!
how bad is it to stain unfinished wood furniture without sanding it? You’re setting yourself up for DIY disappointment. Sanding opens the pores of the wood, allowing it to fully absorb the stain, and it smooths the surface. “Put in the prep time and it will pay off with pro-looking results,” says Jodi Kahn, HGTV Magazine’s lifestyle director. Sand the piece three times over, going in the direction of the grain. You want to apply consistent pressure and be thorough; otherwise, you could end up with an uneven finish. For softer woods like fir, alder, and pine, start with 120 grit, proceed to 180, and finish with 220. For denser specimens such as maple, oak, cherry, and walnut, use 120 grit, then 150, then 180. Wipe with a tack cloth and vacuum up dust. Then apply wood conditioner before staining, says Kahn: “Otherwise it’s like putting self-tanner on dry skin—it could get blotchy.”

Allison with her papillon, Pierre
exas designer Allison Crawford has a thing for unique contemporary furniture. She’s also a dogged hunter with a knack for spotting vintage booty. Put them together and what do you get? “A house that’s unlike any other in the neighborhood!” says Allison. “I don’t like to stick with one time period—there are too many things to love.” Her any-decade-goes attitude came in handy when she bought a 1940s 2,500-square-foot cottage in Austin. It needed a reno and some updates, along with an infusion of pieces that played to its age but looked fresh. After opening up the living spaces and redoing the kitchen and bathrooms, Allison stalked thrift shops, antiques malls, resale sites, and social media for vintage finds with spunk—choosing carefully, she said, “so my house wouldn’t feel like one big cluttered thrift store.” Once she’d gathered enough treasures, she turned to modern stores (CB2 is a fave) for choice new pieces, including a sectional for the living room and a gold-toned bed frame for her master bedroom. Her scores may span the decades, but they fit like they were meant to be together. “When you blend old and new,” Allison says, “you get a look that’s one-of-akind and totally your own.” 84 HGTV Magazine

1970s wood consoles—one under the TV, one under the window—from Room Service Vintage, a favorite Austin haunt. “Vintage furniture is really well-made—and it’s really heavy!” she says. “It took three guys to move the console under the TV.” For max seating, Allison went modern. “Today’s sofas have deeper seats than vintage ones, so they’re way more comfortable,” she says. She chose an off-white sectional from CB2. An antique zebra hide, a gift from her dad, sits under a glass coffee table, also from Room Service Vintage.

Allison didn’t have to look far for inspiration: She bought the pretty chandelier years ago from a Dallas vintage shop and put it in storage, waiting for just the right place to hang it. Found! In awe of its hue (she calls it “rosé”), she commissioned a vibrant abstract painting from Texas artist Jerry Cabrera to display nearby. White-on-white zebraesque wallpaper (Folded by Flat Vernacular) is more interesting than plain white paint, and the super-sleek table doesn’t distract from the bold pieces around it.

rooms in the home, this one has something old, something new, and some old things made new. The 1970s burl wood Parsons table—the one Allison calls “the best table on earth”—looks contemporary next to tubular chrome-based seats designed by Jerry Johnson. When she found them, at two vintage stores in Texas, some were mustard yellow and some were maroon. She redid them in gray-blue. A vintage glass Murano chandelier from Room Service Vintage and a bar cart from a Dallas antiques mall are pure dining-room glam.

Traditional elements—original oak floors refinished in a warm brown, and custom Shaker-style cabinetry— nod to the home’s old soul. The gray-and-white-veined quartzite countertops and backsplash, darker gray quartz from Silestone on the island, and polished-nickel pulls from myknobs.com are all 2018-chic. The blue barstools punch up an otherwise neutral space. “The navy color is classic, but the shiny brass legs make them eye-catching,” Allison says.

The second Allison spotted a set of two-tiered mid-century nightstands on Craigslist, she knew they had showpiece potential. So she scooped ’em up and painted them olive green (Courtyard by Sherwin-Williams). An industrial-style iron bed has a retro feel, but it’s brand-new from One Kings Lane. An unexpectedly great complement to the light fixture with asymmetrical cutouts: a 1960s Picasso-like painting from a local art dealer. The peppy orange bedding is from ZigZagZurich.

Since this room gets lots of sun, Allison wanted to keep the mood bright and happy. The teal-and-white-papered accent wall (Crescent by Kelly Wearstler) resembles a wide-open sky. “I love that the pattern has the same shape as the old arched mirror I hauled back from Morocco,” she says. She piled the bed with other mementos from abroad: pillows picked up from Myanmar and Turkey. “They look cheerful and feel special, since they remind me of places I’ve been,” she says.

It’s all sorts of dramatic and glitzy—a style Allison calls “ ’80s glam pop princess.” A glimmery bed frame from CB2 holds court in front of a wall of metallic grass cloth by Ralph Lauren. “It’s harder to find fun vintage bed frames in king size, since older beds tended to be smaller,” Allison says. She went full-on flashy with two discofab 1970s mirror-front nightstands—a steal at only $25 each from vintage store Again & Again.

When homeowner Raeleen spotted a hanging woodburning fireplace on Pinterest, she decided she had to have one—she just needed a living room for it. “I asked our architect to include it in his plans, without even knowing where I could buy one,” she says. She finally found this powder-coated-steel stunner by Fireorb. A tufted teal velvet sofa from Anthropologie, pink swivel chairs from Room & Board, and a geometric rug by Aelfie are typical of the noholds-barred use of color around the home.

ecorating is personal, something Raeleen Yoon takes to heart. As she says, “If people come to my home and think it has too much color, well, it’s not their home!” Luckily her husband, Charles, is easygoing, and their kids, Kendall and Brady, enjoy a pop of color or two…or 20. Raeleen cultivated her vibrant indoor-outdoor West Coast style while living in Los Angeles in her twenties. She was seriously excited to go all-out when the family moved from a Boston, MA, brownstone to a roomy Colonial fixer-upper in Larchmont, NY. Raeleen worked closely with designers Kendra and Brad Dufton of Color Theory Boston to fill it with personality through bright hues and patterns. There are vivid blue kitchen cabinets, eye-popping wallpapers, and surprising elements, like an out-there fireplace and a yellow foosball table. “I may not be a completely fearless person—I have no desire to try skydiving!— but one thing I don’t find scary is taking decorating risks,” she says. “It’s an adventure to see how it all comes together!”

kitchen
With blue cabinetry in mind, Raeleen tested a bunch of paint shades before landing on Van Deusen Blue by Benjamin Moore. She hired local designer Sarah Robertson to work on the kitchen, and together they decided to paint just the cabinets around the fridge and the base of the island for maximum impact. The extra-long island has a white quartz countertop while the counters along the perimeter are marble. Instead of a bold backsplash, which might compete with the blue, they did white subway tile and dark grout all the way to the ceiling. Charles’ request: comfy barstools. These upholstered ones are by Soho Concept.
breakfast nook Since the kitchen flows
into this area, Raeleen continued the subway tile for a seamless look. The banquette, where the family piles in for dinner, has cushions upholstered in brushstroke fabric by Kelly Wearstler for Groundworks and a similarly lively mix of pillows in blue and pink. Above the oval table from LexMod, Raeleen hung five pendants from Rejuvenation. Staggering the heights was designer Kendra’s idea: “I’d never seen that before, but I love it—we get lots of compliments,” says Raeleen.

The art is by a pair of renowned painters: the Yoon kids! For a gallery effect, Raeleen had everything framed in black. She bought the vintage Eames chair online and had it reupholstered in fabric by Stark. Yes, she redid an iconic leather chair in stripes: “There are no rules that you have to follow tradition!” she says. “It’s more fun this way.” A perfect addition: a geometric rug by Ferm Living. Family dog Finley Bear approves.

brady’s bedroom
The 11-year-old is very outgoing and full of personality, says Raeleen, “so his room needed extra pizzazz.” They Brady-ized the space with blue paint (Mineral Alloy by Benjamin Moore) and a wall of graphic gray-and-white wallpaper by Cole & Son. “He likes math and was drawn to the shapes,” says Raeleen—which also makes him a fan of the rug, made of Flor tiles. The funky red metal dresser was a find at an ABC Carpet & Home warehouse sale, and the lofted desk bed is from RH Baby & Child. Brady’s little hideaway: an aluminum-clad spherical chair from RH Teen.

game room
The yellow foosball table from allmodern.com isn’t just a hit with family and friends—it’s part of the decor. Raeleen wanted some sunshine in the basement. To turn up the energy, she chose a multicolor geometric wallpaper by Cole & Son and light-up letters from the Etsy shop Smithers of Stamford that spell out goal.
kendall’s bedroom
Since her teen loves to hang out here with friends, Raeleen put in seating beyond the bed: a roomy built-in bench (the cushion is twin-bed-size, perfect for sleepovers) and a hanging swing from Anthropologie. The bird-and-cloud wallpaper by Hygge & West is a nod to Kendall’s love of nature, and it gives the room an ethereal vibe. Playful-chic touches: the tassel pillow and the pom-pom throw, both from PBteen; Robert Allen fabric on the shades and bench; and domed brass sconces from Schoolhouse Electric.

Raeleen took this room’s color quotient down a notch because “not everyone loves color as much as I do,” she says. Her version of neutral is this mix of soft colors and cool patterns. The walls are painted a pretty gray with a subtle hint of green (Imperial Gray by Benjamin Moore). The small print on the DwellStudio bedding pairs well with the shapes on the throw from Loloi and the CB2 rug. The print above the bed, with hands spelling out love, is from One Kings Lane.

sunroom
You don’t see a ton of threeseason rooms in New York, but Raeleen had her heart set on an indoor-outdoor living space. “It’s my favorite, even though we don’t use it in the winter,” she says. The area is connected to the formal living room via a wall of glass doors by NanaWall that fold flat when fully open, so Raeleen didn’t want it to feel too casual (i.e., no wicker). Instead there’s a platform sofa, chair, bone-inlay coffee table, and hammock, all from Anthropologie, and a polypropylene Persian-inspired rug from allmodern.com.

after
t
here was a lot to love about the Henderson, NV, home that Daniella and Jose Villamil bought in 2017: The yard was big, the ceilings were high, and the bones were good. But the Spanish-style house, built in 2002, had a host of dated finishes, especially in the kitchen. They included plain oak cabinets with a depressing shiny yellow finish, oversize splotchy gray tiles that made the floor look forever grimy, plus a so-called “Southwesternstyle” tile backsplash and countertops that really had no style whatsoever. “The layout was the one thing that was right!” says Daniella, a designer. Taking down the wall between the kitchen and the dining room gave the area breathing space. After that Daniella worked from the ground up, installing new floors, cabinets, and an island, and finishing it all off with a patterned backsplash and a sweep of jewellike color. “Before, everything looked sad,” says Daniella. “Color and pattern give the kitchen energy and make it original, but it still feels homey.”
floor
There was no work-around for the old floor tiles. Daniella knew she wanted wood but she also wanted something bright and airy. The solution: wide oak boards from Floor & Decor—they’re 8 inches across—with a light gray tone and wire-brushed finish that give them a cozy, worn-in look.
124 HGTV Magazine
cabinets
Where plain, boxy cabinets were before, Daniella put in custom-built Shaker-style ones and painted them deep green (Forest Green by Benjamin Moore). “Even at night, in artificial lighting, the color always looks good,” says Daniella, especially with the glimmering brass knobs and pulls, by Rejuvenation.
island and stools The former island barely had enough room to prep a salad, let alone space to sit. The 2.0 version features storage cabinets on the side facing the range, and an open end. Bistro-style barstools with woven seats, from Atelier Tricot, make it café-cool. Since they’re backless, they can be tucked under the island when they’re not being used.

Adding molding so the cabinets reach the ceiling made our little kitchen look grand. —Daniella
fridge surround
“I didn’t want our fridge to look like a big block of gray next to all the colorful cabinets,” says Daniella. She had her contractor build a custom enclosure; painted the same rich green, it blends right in. An open cubby on top shows off vases and baskets. Daniella and Jose made the open wood shelving next to it out of maple boards.
countertops and sink
Pink tile counters? In a word, yikes! Daniella ripped them right out and installed white quartzite with gray veining from Marble Express (on the island, too). A double-basin sink with an industrial-style pull-down faucet by Kraus overlooks the backyard. Rinsing dishes never gets boring—there are hummingbirds out there.

backsplash
Daniella had her heart set on a cement tile backsplash before she even picked anything else in the kitchen. “In Colombia, where Jose and I are from, a lot of floors have tile like this,” she says. “I’ve always wanted to use it in a project.” These are by Ann Sacks; the intricate pattern is balanced by subtle cream and gray colors.
range
An off-the-rack one wouldn’t have done it for Jose, a trained chef, and Daniella wanted a showpiece. They found their match in this 1982 Viking range, scored on Craigslist for a song— just $700, plus a six-hour car ride to California for pickup. “It has some scuff marks on it, but I love that character,” says Daniella. The creamy color against the emerald cabinets gives this vintage range a fresh, contemporary look.
