I make the images of products we love look as pretty on our pages as they do in real life. OCTOBER 2018
DUKE: LAUREN PERLSTEIN/STUDIO D. FRANZINO: CHRIS ECKERT/STUDIO D. SHELTON: MIKE GARTEN.
I grew up as a pastor’s daughter in a small West Virginia town. If you’re thinking, That must have been tough—well, back then it often seemed that way. I remember sitting in hospital waiting rooms while my dad checked on someone, and the time we got to our hotel for vacation and had to turn right back around because a congregant had died. I might have been bored or disappointed sometimes, but the more my parents gave, the more I wanted to give. I put my allowance in the collection plate when someone was sick and packed boxes at a local food pantry, and I came to understand that helping people who have it worse leaves no room for selfishness. Twenty years later, I also understand something else: When you’re fighting tough issues like poverty, it’s easy to lose hope that things will change. Our voting guide on page 58 is proof that they can—it’s packed with examples of state and local governments making good on promises to lower health care costs, combat gun violence, and more. I hope it inspires you to head to the polls on November 6, because the most important thing I learned from my parents is this: We have to show up for one another.

“Turn it into cider iced tea: It adds a new layer of flavor, and it can be spiked! In a small saucepan, bring 4 cups apple cider and 8 slices fresh ginger to a boil. Cook until reduced by half, about 18 minutes. Remove from heat, add 4 Earl Grey tea bags, and let steep 4 minutes; discard ginger and tea bags. Let cool. Then stir in 2/3 cup bourbon (or serve it virgin) and pour into four glasses over ice.”

“First, let’s talk dinner: Your meal should be rich in protein and fiber, which help keep you full—think salmon with lentils and broccoli. Skip processed foods with simple carbs, like crackers and white bread (your body digests them quickly). If you’re still hungry later, have a light snack with a bit more protein. “How can I make my perfume last past 11 a.m.?” —Gabbie Cirelli, New York, NY
“It all has to do with how and where you spritz! You’ve probably been told that you should spray your perfume in the air first and then walk into the scent-filled cloud, but Sylvie Ganter, cofounder and cocreator of Atelier Cologne, says, ‘Always apply your fragrance directly onto clean skin or fresh out of the shower. Dry skin generally won’t hold scent. After a shower, your skin has more moisture, which will promote longerlasting aroma.’” —Paige Stables, assistant beauty editor

What’s in your water can affect your complexion. “High levels of chlorine can strip skin of beneficial oils and cause inflammation,” says Washington, DC, dermatologist Elizabeth Tanzi, M.D., and this can exacerbate signs of aging. Switch to a showerhead that filters out chlorine, like the Waterpik Universal Shower Filter ($30, waterpik.com). And try a micellar face wash that doesn’t require rinsing, such as Olay Luminous Micellar Water (above) or L’Oréal Paris Micellar Cleansing Water Normal to Oily Skin ($10, drugstores), for oily skin. Chomping gum and sipping through a straw seem harmless, but both can affect your face over time. “These habits put stress on your skin and can even etch lines around your mouth,” says Macrene Alexiades, M.D., a New York City dermatologist. “Plus, gum-chewing can lead to sagging jowls.” Try limiting these actions to once or twice a week, and if you rely on gum to cut snack cravings, sip a cup of peppermint tea instead. Fruits and veggies are chock-full of antioxidants, molecules that help protect skin from free-radical damage that can cause wrinkles, age spots, and more. During colder months, though, “frozen produce, which is picked when ripe, is richer in antioxidants than fresh produce, which has lower levels by the time it reaches your local store,” explains David McDaniel, M.D., a dermatologist in Virginia Beach, VA. Load up on one or both at each meal for the best benefits.
“If you’re prone to melasma [which causes dark patches on the face], LED overhead lighting gives off a type of light that can bring it on,” says Mona Gohara, M.D., a dermatologist in Connecticut. Shield skin with an antioxidant serum, like Avène A-Oxitive Antioxidant Defense Serum ($44, aveneusa. com), followed by a sunscreen with iron oxide, like SkinCeuticals Physical Fusion UV Defense (above).

To stave off neck lines and soften ones you have, apply a neck treatment with smoothing peptides or retinol, like the No7 serum above, daily. C H A N G E YO U R CAS E
Ditch your cotton pillowcase for a silk one. “Cotton crinkles, so smooshing your face against it repeatedly can lead to permanent wrinkles,” says Dr. Gohara. Smooth silk reduces the friction between your face and the pillow.

D I TC H YO -YO D I E T I N G “A cycle of rapid weight loss followed by significant weight gain [or vice versa] causes facial skin to stretch out, then contract, which can trigger sagging,” says Ava Shamban, M.D., a dermatologist in Los Angeles. “Plus, when your body is low on nutrients, your skin can’t repair itself as well.” Stick to a steady weight with a well-balanced diet and exercise to stay fit and youthful-looking.

Skin tends to get drier with age. Bring back a dewy glow with a lightweight, hydrating liquid foundation. If you tend to be extra dry, “mix in a hydrator to keep your skin supple,” says Gita Bass, makeup artist and spokeswoman for Simple Skincare.
A rosy flush reads as healthy. Fake it with a liquid or cream blush, which will melt into skin for a more natural look than powder gives. “Try the good ol’ smile trick: Grin, then apply blush on the apples of cheeks with your fingers, diffusing the product outward,” Bass advises.
Don’t skip your lips. “A bit of color goes a long way to add life to your face,” Bass says. Even if you tend to steer clear of bright, bold hues like red, “a hint of berry or coral warms up your skin too,” Bass explains. Avoid matte textures, which can draw attention to lines.
Defined arches can act like a mini face-lift. “If you do nothing else, penciling in your brows with small, feathery, slightly upward strokes opens up your eyes,” Bass says. “If you’re a brunette, use a shade lighter than your natural brow; blonde, go a shade darker.”

More isn’t always better, especially for cover-up. Too much product will emphasize wrinkles. “Concentrate on problem areas and just below the tear ducts, and gently pat—don’t pull—with your ring finger,” she says. Use a cream formula for a flawless finish.
Strategic shimmer catches the light, imparting an allover soft-focus glow that blurs creases. Opt for an iridescent finish instead of a sparkly one. “To prevent going overboard, apply highlighter in natural light, targeting cheekbones and browbones,” she says.
Give lips a more youthful appearance with a little liner. “Not only will it help stop your lipcolor from bleeding, but it’s also great for adding definition,” she notes, so lips appear fuller. Look for one that contains skin softeners such as shea butter for nourishment.
Rather than its looking, well, shadowy, the goal should be brightening. Stick to a sheer wash of a light neutral shade to illuminate eyes: “Dark colors can be aging,” she says. Extra credit: Trace the waterlines of eyes with a nude liner to cancel redness.

OCTOBER 2018
ARE YOU AND YOUR LOVED ONES TAKING THE RIGHT FORM OF CoQ10? Did you know that there are two forms of CoQ10? CoQ10 comes in two main forms: Ubiquinone (the oxidized form) sometimes called conventional CoQ10 and Ubiquinol, sometimes called the advanced or active CoQ10. For CoQ10 to be effective in the production of cellular energy it must be converted to its active form – UBIQUINOL (“you-bik-win-all”). Our bodies rely on cellular energy for our heart and other organs to function properly. Ubiquinol is associated with over 90% of our cellular energy production. After the age of 40 our bodies produce less CoQ10 which can result in lower Ubiquinol levels. By taking a Ubiquinol supplement, you can bypass the conversion.
Look for the Kaneka quality seal on your favorite brand of Ubiquinol

THROW ON A MAXI Like most moms, Lauren doesn’t want to “feel like my clothes prevent me from playing with my kid.” Cue this breezy boho stunner that is just as appropriate on date night as it is running around the backyard. Kate Spade New York Dress, $798, katespade.com. Bracelet, $55, taijewelry.com.
and what makes them so great
IF IT SEEMS like anything you can do, Lauren Conrad can do better—well, we understand. Take her trick for improving the seemingly unimprovable charity giveaway: “When doing a closet clean-out, make separate piles of stuff and send to appropriate locations [instead of] putting everything into one trash bag. There’s Dress for Success for work pieces and places that give nicer dresses to girls going to prom.” But the biggest misconception about Lauren, according to Lauren herself: “It’s really funny to me when people have this idea that I have things very put together. My life is a bit of a mess, and I don’t broadcast that, but I like it that way.” That revelation might come as a surprise given that she has built a whole empire around making life as pretty as possible—from a clothing line for Kohl’s to eight best-selling books, including style and entertaining manuals. Lauren fully understands that she might have contributed to the whole keeping-up-with-theJoneses vibe online, though that was never her intention. “I like to focus on the prettier parts of life, but that doesn’t necessarily represent all of it. I feel bad. There’s such a high standard now to do everything and have it all look pictureperfect. You’re not going to enjoy the pretty things if you’ve been up all night doing them. Your life isn’t supposed to be Pinterest,” she says. She’s come a long way from the 20something who thought she could have it all. When an old mentor told her that being successful in business, her love life, and friendships would require compromising
somewhere, she didn’t listen. “Instead, I took it as a challenge,” she says. Now, at 32, she realizes that the desire to do it all wasn’t all it was cracked up to be. “I wanted to handle everything myself—I felt that nobody would care about my business as much as I would,” she says. “But when you take on too much, it’s hard to do everything well. It got to the point where it was too much for me to handle. I had to learn to delegate. If you can focus on the areas where you know you can’t be replaced and bring in help in the areas you can, that’s where you find success.” Thanks to a newly laid-back mindset, the Cali girl’s current ethos could be described as selective perfectionism. She sweats the small stuff only on things that really matter to her. Take her style: Since having her son, Liam, 1, with husband William Tell (fun fact: Liam was born just hours after one of her infamous Fourth of July parties ended—“It was so kind of him to wait!” she says), the polished-and-proper looks we’re used to seeing her in come out only for work meetings. “Stretch denim is my best friend these days!” she says. Before relaunching her LC Lauren Conrad for Kohl’s denim collection, she embarked on a yearlong “deep dive” that involved wear-testing jeans samples and sending back notes on fabric and fit. It’s the kind of intensive work you’d expect to find behind jeans that cost three times as much. That attention to detail is why she’s just now opening a brick-and-mortar location for her nonprofit retailer The Little Market, which sells fair-trade goods made by women artisans, though she’s dreamed about it for years. “We wanted to make sure we could give these female artisans the best platform possible and set them up for success,” she says. “So much of it is one-of-a-kind handmade items that you can’t even understand the value of until you really see them.” Now that we can see the real Lauren Conrad a little better, we know just what she means.

Put on some good music and listen while you brush your hair and pick your outfit. Music can boost concentration and lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol, which can slow cognition. Experts once believed classical music was best for the brain, but recent research suggests that any music you love—yes, including the soundtrack to the Mamma Mia! sequel—has benefits, says neurologist Barry Jordan, M.D., assistant medical director of Burke Rehabilitation Hospital in White Plains, NY.

before you leave the house Illustrate your to-do list. Drawing something you don’t want to forget (e.g., a carton of milk) may be even more beneficial than writing it down, a University of Waterloo study showed. Researchers believe you’re more likely to recall your sketch later because drawing taps multiple kinds of skills: motor, verbal, and visual.

Get in touch with your senses. Breathe in that coffee aroma; take note of the way light is reflected off of the table. The parts of the brain that help us process input from our senses may also play a role in storing memories, says Barry Gordon, M.D., Ph.D., coauthor of the book Intelligent Memory.

Take a different route. “The brain works largely out of habit,” says Ian Robertson, Ph.D., distinguished scientist at the Center for BrainHealth at the University of Texas at Dallas. “When you do something unfamiliar, your brain fires off neuro transmitters that improve communication between its different regions.”
Stash your phone. People who toggle between screens and human interaction don’t process and retain information as well, found a Stanford University study. You’ll want these memories later—even of your kids’ fight over whose cookie was bigger.

In fact, “there’s evidence that asking yourself these questions can lower your cardiac and nervous system’s response to stress,” Dr. Raison says. “Then you can brainstorm solutions.” Let’s say an unexpected bill has revved you up—you can calmly think of ways to bring in cash. “When you learn to control your anxiety, your thoughts work to serve you a whole lot better,” he adds.

ANXIETY
Life happens—often bringing with it a whole lot of stress that can do a number on your health. These experts explain how to deal, plus the best ways to Zen out. BY LISA MULCAHY
YOU CAN STOP STRESS FROM SPIRALING
“When you’re anxious, chemicals like epinephrine and cortisol are released into your bloodstream and nervous system. It’s your body’s alert mode, and we’re biologically programmed to take threats to our survival very seriously. That stress response can be truly disabling; a friend’s daughter, for instance, was so anxious, she couldn’t go to school. I tell friends that anxiety is always about the future; you might fear losing someone you love or that
you won’t be able to pay a bill. A little worry can be good—it can motivate you to take action! But when you overthink, it can quickly cause anxiety to spiral out of control.” —Charles L. Raison, M.D., professor of psychiatry and director of the School of Human Ecology at the University of Wisconsin and CNN’s mental health expert
WHAT YOU CAN DO When you’re
feeling anxious, ask yourself two questions: Am I going to die? and How bad are things, really? “The answer to the first one will almost certainly be no,” Dr. Raison says. And realizing that you are safe and

“The first sign of anxiety can be a physical one. I treated a woman recently who told me she was having pain in her belly. I pointed out to her that according to my notes, she had described similar discomfort years before during a difficult time. A light went on for her, and she realized that over the years she had tended to feel stress in her gut. The millions of nerves in the GI tract are in two-way communication with the brain. Also, the bacteria in the gut play a major role, interacting with the brain and producing substances such as hormones, neurotransmitters, and toxins that can cause a variety of gastrointestinal symptoms.” —Jon LaPook, M.D., chief medical correspondent for CBS News and Mebane Professor of Gastroenterology at NYU Langone Health in New York City

DEEP BREATHING REALLY CALMS YOU DOWN “I teach deep breathing to my patients with lung disease so they can avoid the anxiety that accompanies difficulty breathing. I had one patient with pretty severe asthma. It also quickly became very apparent that stress she was experiencing at home was causing her anxiety. She had difficulty managing hip pain in addition to her lung disease, and she was also dealing with family issues. She was panicking, so her heart and respiratory rates would go up, affecting her already compromised ability to breathe. If you can slow your breathing down, you’ll relax immediately.” —Sucharita Kher, M.D., pulmonologist and director of the outpatient pulmonary clinic at Tufts Medical Center in Boston
WHAT YOU CAN DO Breathe in through your nose, then purse your lips and breathe out slowly, says Dr. Kher. “I call it ‘Smell the rose, blow out the candle.’ ”
HOW TO KNOW IF IT’S A MORE SERIOUS PROBLEM
“Women ask me, ‘How can you distinguish everyday stress from the kind of chronic anxiety that merits treatment?’ I explain that true Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is characterized by persistent and excessive worry about a number of different things even when there is no apparent reason for concern—not one stressful event or situation. GAD is diagnosed when you find it difficult to control your worry on more days than not for at least six months and you have three or more of the following symptoms: feeling nervous, irritable, or on edge; having a sense of impending danger, panic, or doom; having an increased heart rate;
hyperventilating, sweating, and/or trembling; feeling weak or tired; difficulty concentrating; trouble sleeping; and gastrointestinal problems.” —Pari Ghodsi, M.D., a fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, practicing in Los Angeles
WHAT YOU CAN DO See your doctor
if you think you might have GAD. There are very effective treatments available, including cognitive behavior therapy, which can help you change stressful thinking patterns. Also, medication can help regulate the level of the chemical serotonin in your brain, which may lessen symptoms.
YOU DON’T JUST NEED TO “SUCK IT UP” “I recently lost my dad quite suddenly, and I can relate to people feeling like they need to hold it all together. But it’s not healthy to push feelings down and just keep going. As a cardiologist, I know chronic emotional stress is hard on your health—it elevates blood pressure and heart rate and can cause inflammation in the body, which can raise chances of a heart attack or stroke. To minimize the effects of long-term stress, it’s important that you find healthy mechanisms to cope with stress that work for you.”

WOMEN’S HEALTH 1 WHY PAID PARENTAL LEAVE IS NOT A LUXURY As any mom knows, parental leave is not about catching up on Netflix—it’s a crucial time for her to bond with the new baby and to let her body recover from a major trauma. The United States is one of only a handful of countries that don’t provide paid leave (although a few states, including New Jersey, do). That makes hearing about European benefits a special kind of torture. Swedish moms, for example, are allotted almost 69 paid weeks, while Estonia provides a whopping 87. And new research demonstrates that when paid leave is the law, it directly affects a woman’s health: A study from the Norwegian School of Economics examined the impact of Norway’s paid maternity leave policy, enacted in 1977, on mothers’ health years after they gave birth. It found that women who had paid leave had lower blood pressure, cholesterol, and body mass index (BMI); fewer instances of diabetes; and less chronic pain. And the mothers made healthier lifestyle choices too: They reported getting more exercise and smoking less around age 40 than women who had given birth shortly before the policy went into effect. The conclusion? Paid leave is worth fighting for, and it costs very little (see sidebar at right). WHAT YOU CAN DO Find out where your candidates stand on this issue and vote accordingly!
While abortion and reproductive health garner the most headlines, politicians hold great sway over women’s access to paid parental leave, primary care, cancer screenings, and so much more. Here, the lowdown on three critical topics.

ME DICAID E XPA N S I O N MAT TE R S Over 67 million women, men, and children are enrolled in Medicaid, in part because the Affordable Care Act allows states to expand the vital health insurance program. And because the 14,000 federally funded clinics that provide primary care and crucial screenings are reimbursed through Medicaid, the program is literally a lifesaver. A recent study found that states with expanded Medicaid saw an increase in early cancer diagnoses. Thirty-three states have signed up to expand the program since 2010, and next month Utah, Idaho, Nebraska, and Montana may have Medicaid expansion on the ballot. What can you do? If you want to see expansion put to a vote in your state, call your representatives in Congress.

MAKING BREAST CANCER SCREENING AVAILABLE TO EVERYONE
In early 2015, when TV’s Semi-Homemade Cooking chef Sandra Lee was 48, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. But while Lee felt lucky to have had her cancer found early (she had a mastectomy), she couldn’t stop thinking about what might have happened had she not been able to afford a mammogram, which many women with high deductibles cannot. “I wanted to make sure no one else was putting it off,” says Lee. So along with her partner, New York governor Andrew Cuomo, Lee helped pass the No Excuses bill in that state. “The two main excuses people give for not going to a screening are that they can’t afford it and that they don’t have the time,” says Lee. That’s why the bill mandates that insurers in the state cover all fees for mammograms, breast ultrasounds, and MRIs a doctor recommends. It also requires screening facilities to stay open later so people can get to them. And Lee isn’t stopping there: This fall she’s touring the U.S. to showcase Rx Early Detection: A Cancer Journey With Sandra Lee, her HBO documentary (airing October 8), and to petition lawmakers to enact some or all of No Excuses in their states. “Once a law passes in one state, there’s a blueprint,” Lee says, so write to your state’s governor. “Cancer is an epidemic. We need to catch it earlier with screenings,” she says.
Three things that cost more than paid maternity leave:
New Jersey’s policy costs taxpayers about 58¢ per week—less than a pack of Orbit gum.

ENVIRONMENTAL SAFETY
MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD!
HOW CLIMATE CHANGE AFFECTS YOUR HEALTH is near-unanimous consensus that pollution 1from“There human activities is causing the climate to warm,” says Benjamin Strauss, Ph.D., chief scientist at Climate Central. “Thousands of studies show that the effects are already here, including stronger and more heat waves, downpours, wildfires, and droughts.” Also: Respiratory Problems The square acreage affected by wildfires has doubled since the 1980s, and displacement of people is only the start: Air quality is a huge problem. Respiratory illnesses climb 25% after fires, and one study found higher admissions to hospitals for cardiac issues.
Major Allergy Issues A longer spring means a longer ragweed season. This is not merely annoying for allergy sufferers: It can trigger asthma attacks and exacerbate other respiratory illnesses. Ragweed season is 21 days longer in Minneapolis than it was 20 years ago.
Insect-Borne Illnesses Heat and higher humidity mean mosquitoes and ticks spread illness farther and more widely, and longer warm seasons give them more time to breed. Incidences of Lyme disease reported to the CDC, for example, more than doubled from 1991 to 2014.
2 KEEP DRINKING WATER SAFE The water crisis in Flint, MI, has brought national attention to the need for stricter enforcement of federal cleanwater standards. Michigan hasn’t solved its problem, but other states are getting ahead of it. In 2016, New York became the first state to require lead testing of school water, for example. WHAT YOU CAN DO
Since safe drinking water is largely a local issue, bone up on what’s going on in your area, then find out what local officials are doing about it. Your state or city health department is the place to start.

GUN VIOLENCE
About as many of us will die by gunshot this year as from breast cancer. But while the topic of guns can be polarizing, there’s actually a great deal U.S. citizens agree on.
WHAT WILL HELP SAVE LIVES Meet a game changer: Kansas State Senator (R) Barbara Bollier, a former anesthesiologist, is so alarmed by gun violence that she has made curtailing it part of her platform. Redbook: How is gun violence a matter of public health? Barbara Bollier: Causing both injury and
death, gun violence also significantly increases the stress that many people live with. Mass shootings have everyone’s attention, but statistically it’s all the other [gun violence] that really kills and maims the most people. That is our health crisis. Redbook: Does your medical training have an impact on your gun legislation efforts? BB: I did a majority of my residency at Ben Taub
Hospital in Houston, which is one of the busiest trauma centers in the country. As a physician, I’m trained to look at the data, and it shows that reasonable restrictions around firearms save lives. Working within the Second Amendment, we can have sensible laws that protect the public and reduce the risk of injury or death, but keep legal ownership intact.
Redbook: Which aspect of gun violence doesn’t get enough attention? BB: Suicide. Sixty percent of all gun deaths
in the U.S. are suicides, and if you attempt suicide with a gun, you are 90% likely to succeed. Limiting access to firearms significantly reduces the likelihood that there will be a successful suicide. That’s why I introduced the Extreme Risk Protection Order, which would have allowed a family member to request that a judge order the temporary removal of firearms when a person is at risk of harming himself or herself or another person. “Red flag” laws like these save lives. It didn’t pass, but I’m not giving up. Nobody supports suicide. Redbook: Progress can feel slow. How can regular people help? BB: The message is persistence. Kansas
has very permissive gun laws, but we amended an existing law that allowed guns in many places so that it exempted state hospitals, including mental hospitals. We are inching closer to where we need to be. We aren’t going to stop gun violence, but we can reduce it.

GUN REFORMS WE ALL AGREE ON
The rhetoric can get heated, but the large majority of Democrats, Republicans, and Independents agree on a few common-sense ideas to reduce gun violence: Universal background checks “Red flag” laws that allow guns to be removed from people at risk of harming themselves or others Safe firearm storage laws Mandatory waiting periods for gun purchases
97%
of Americans (including 97% of gun owners) want universal background checks, which would close loopholes that allow people to buy guns without them.

parts of the lungs, is more common in women and younger people, and—unlike with squamous cell carcinoma, more common in men— coughing is not always an initial symptom. “Because squamous cell cancer is usually found in a major airway, it causes symptoms like coughing and shortness of breath early on, but adenocarcinoma can be asymptomatic longer,” says J. Taylor Hays, M.D., an internist at Mayo Clinic Cancer Center. That means it can be difficult to detect and treat right away. For women, symptoms can be as subtle as voice changes or chest pain. Women may also be more susceptible to gene mutations linked to lung cancer, and our hormones could influence risk. While lung cancer diagnoses have generally decreased in recent decades, rates in women haven’t dropped as much as in men, and smoking habits can’t fully explain why that is. If you notice something that’s off, don’t wait: See your doctor.
We need to talk about lung cancer
MYTH: It only affects older folks.
Yes, even if you’ve never touched a cigarette! Because smoking is not the only risk factor for this disease. BY KELSEY KLOSS
Here’s something many people don’t know: Lung cancer takes more lives every year than colon, breast, and prostate cancer combined, making it the leading cause of cancer death in the United States. “There’s a stigma associated with it because of the link to smoking,” says David Cooke, M.D., head of general thoracic surgery at the University of California, Davis. However, anyone with lungs has some degree of risk. These are common misconceptions about the disease, and the facts that can protect your health.
Americans who pass away from lung cancer never smoked. There could be underlying genetic factors that determine if someone is susceptible, and secondhand smoke can increase a nonsmoker’s risk of lung cancer by up to 30%. Experts are now even investigating the risk of “thirdhand smoke”—toxic residue from smoking that can build up on walls and furniture and in carpets and that may become airborne and stick around for months or even years. (As a precaution, thoroughly clean items ever exposed to smoke.)

While most people with lung cancer are over 65, younger people still can and do get diagnosed. Certain gene mutations linked to lung cancer have been seen in younger patients and could be hereditary, so it’s important to tell your doctor if you have a family history of the disease. MYTH: You can avoid risk by
switching to “safer” cigarettes.
Even low-tar and low-nicotine cigarettes are dangerous and can cause lung cancer. Vaping is likely less risky, but experts don’t know its long-term effects. The best way to slash your lung cancer risk? Avoid smoking entirely. Also opt for indoor fun when air quality is unhealthy, test your home for radon (a natural gas that, at high levels, can cause lung cancer), and talk to your doctor if your job involves risky chemicals like asbestos or diesel fumes to learn what protective actions you can take.

Eat these for stronger bones Your skeleton is your body’s biggest support system, but starting in your 30s, it begins to weaken. Give it a little love with these bone mass–building foods that help prevent osteoporosis and fractures later in life. BY KELSEY KLOSS
DOWN SOME VITAMIN D
Most folks absorb only about 30% of the calcium they consume. A solution: Pair it with enough vitamin D, found in foods like SALMON , because that stimulates a protein that gives calcium a piggyback ride into the blood, where it can be properly absorbed. (No need to eat the two at the same meal.) Salmon is also rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which may help lower inflammation linked to osteoporosis. TRY THIS: Wrap 2 to 3 oz. smoked salmon around 4 asparagus stalks, trimmed. Drizzle with olive oil and red wine vinegar; season with black pepper.

UP YOUR CALCIUM GAME
“Calcium will give you strong bones, kiddo.” The advice your mom gave you still stands. Your body stores the mineral in your bones, making them thick and strong. This is especially important after age 30, when cells that remove old bone material become more active and those that deposit new material slack off. PLAIN LOW-FAT YOGURT is packed with strengthening calcium, and it’s super versatile: You can top it with sweet crushed fruit or savory veggies. TRY THIS: Mix ½ cup plain low-fat yogurt with 1 Tbsp pesto. Add ¼ cup cherry tomatoes, quartered, and a drizzle of olive oil; season with a pinch of salt and black pepper. Serve with celery sticks and carrots.
TRY THESE TOO!
Other yummy options for bone health: GOOD CALCIUM PICKS
Orange juice fortified with calcium, Parmesan cheese, sardines with bones, Swiss cheese
GET MORE MAGNESIUM
Half of Americans are low on this mineral, which, like calcium, is stored in bones to keep them sturdy. It also regulates the parathyroid hormone, which controls calcium levels in the body. Increase your intake by eating more magnesium-rich EDAMAME —yes, the kind you munch on before your California rolls! These little soybeans are also a good source of bone-thickening vitamin K. TRY THIS: Toss ½ cup cooked, shelled edamame with chile flakes, grated ginger, and a squeeze of orange juice.
MEGA MAGNESIUM MUNCHIES
Black beans, cashews, peanuts, whole-wheat bread
VITAMIN D–RICH FOODS

Per new research in the journal Pediatrics, among 1,000 kids who received treatment for an asthma attack, those who also had the flu had a 37% chance of not responding to treatment, compared with just 13% among flu-free children. The CDC recommends that your entire crew be vaccinated by the end of this month for the best protection.

THINK FIRST (LIKE SHE DID!)
Before you pick up your phone, ask yourself why you need it, says Kamenetz, “so you use it with purpose, not out of anxiety or boredom.” If you’re with another person and really do need to check it, she says, “tell him or her out loud why you’re picking it up.” That simple statement can go a long way toward avoiding hurt feelings.

Let’s be honest—that device in your pocket has become a life necessity, like water or a patient babysitter. And put to good use, it can be almost as beneficial. “It takes mindfulness and empathy to make the wisest use of these amazing devices while diminishing the negative effects,” says Anya Kamenetz, author of The Art of Screen Time. “Our culture will need time to figure it out,” she adds—but here’s how you can start right now. That photo of your pancake stack doesn’t just make a fun Insta post— it can also improve your well-being, suggests a new study published in the journal Health: Over a twomonth period, researchers interviewed people who took one photo a day of something they liked. Some said they felt less lonely after sharing the photo with friends, while others felt more “in the moment” just by having taken the shot. “The commitment provides an opportunity for daily interaction, engagement with your environment, and a sense of purpose and achievement, all of which can affect well-being,” says study coauthor Andrew Cox, Ph.D.
Next time you feel like pulling your hair out at work, initiate a “What do you want for dinner?” text convo with your SO, suggests a recent study from the University of California, Irvine. Researchers have found that exchanging mundane messages with a loved one can lower blood pressure, which commonly rises in response to stress.

HEALTHY PATTERN… Digital lifestyle expert Carley Knobloch says habit-tracking apps like Done (free, iOS only) and Streaks (free, Android) can help you create a routine and stick to it. “One of my goals is to write in a journal every morning to ease my anxieties,” she says. “Done’s alerts make sure I never forget, and its tracking feature inspires me to keep up my momentum.”
…AND BREAK A BAD ONE Many of us are guilty of grabbing our devices 100 more times a day than we should. So use your phone to keep you off your—yes—phone. When you go to check any kind of time waster, the app Space by Boundless Mind (free) launches a mindfulness exercise that forces you to take a breath instead of scrolling aimlessly. Meanwhile, the longer you leave the Forest app ($2 for iOS, free for Android) open while focusing on an offline task, the bigger your virtual tree grows. Leave the app to go procrastinate on Twitter, and your tree dies. For even more motivation, the app lets you earn “coins” you can use to plant trees in partnership with the nonprofit Trees for the Future.

TOGETHER Personal music devices have led to a cease-fire in radio battles, but here’s a good reason to declare car rides earbud-free: Young adults who have a strong bond with their parents often listened to music with them as kids, shows University of Arizona research. “Musical activities lead to coordination via moving or singing together, and when you feel ‘in sync’ with someone, you tend to like that person more,” says study coauthor Jake Harwood, Ph.D.

Brief Summary of Medication Guide Enbrel® (en-brel) Enbrel® (en-brel) (etanercept) (etanercept) injection, for subcutaneous use for injection, for subcutaneous use Read the Medication Guide that comes with Enbrel injection, for subcutaneous use before you start using it and each time you get a refill. There may be new information. This Medication Guide does not take the place of talking with your healthcare provider about your medical condition or treatment. It is important to remain under your healthcare provider’s care while using Enbrel. Enbrel is a prescription medicine called a Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF) blocker that affects your immune system. What is the most important information I should know about Enbrel? Enbrel may cause serious side effects, including: 1. Risk of Infection 2. Risk of Cancer 1. Risk of infection Enbrel can lower the ability of your immune system to fight infections. Some people have serious infections while taking Enbrel. These infections include tuberculosis (TB), and infections caused by viruses, fungi, or bacteria that spread throughout their body. Some people have died from these infections. • Your healthcare provider should test you for TB before starting Enbrel. • Your healthcare provider should monitor you closely for symptoms of TB during treatment with Enbrel even if you tested negative for TB. • Your healthcare provider should check you for symptoms of any type of infection before, during, and after your treatment with Enbrel. You should not start taking Enbrel if you have any kind of infection unless your healthcare provider says it is okay. 2. Risk of cancer • There have been cases of unusual cancers, some resulting in death, in children and teenage patients who started using TNF-blocking agents at less than 18 years of age. • For children, teenagers, and adults taking TNF-blocker medicines, including Enbrel, the chances of getting lymphoma or other cancers may increase. • People with rheumatoid arthritis, especially those with very active disease, may be more likely to get lymphoma. Before starting Enbrel, be sure to talk to your healthcare provider: Enbrel may not be right for you. Before starting Enbrel, tell your healthcare provider about all of your medical conditions, including: Infections. Tell your healthcare provider if you: • have an infection. See “What is the most important information I should know about Enbrel?” • are being treated for an infection. • think you have an infection. • have symptoms of an infection such as fever, sweats or chills, cough or flu-like symptoms, shortness of breath, blood in your phlegm, weight loss, muscle aches, warm, red or painful areas on your skin, sores on your body, diarrhea or stomach pain, burning when you urinate or urinating more often than normal, and feel very tired. • have any open cuts on your body. • get a lot of infections or have infections that keep coming back. • have diabetes, HIV, or a weak immune system. People with these conditions have a higher chance for infections. • have TB, or have been in close contact with someone with TB. • were born in, lived in, or traveled to countries where there is a risk for getting TB. Ask your healthcare provider if you are not sure. • live, have lived in, or traveled to certain parts of the country (such as the Ohio and Mississippi River valleys, or the Southwest) where there is a greater risk for getting certain kinds of fungal infections (histoplasmosis, coccidioidomycosis, blastomycosis). These infections may happen or become more severe if you use Enbrel. Ask your healthcare provider if you do not know if you live or have lived in an area where these infections are common. • have or have had hepatitis B. Also, before starting Enbrel, tell your healthcare provider: • About all the medicines you take including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins and herbal supplements including: ® ® ° Orencia (abatacept) or Kineret (anakinra). You have a higher chance for serious infections when taking Enbrel with Orencia® or Kineret®. ® ° Cyclophosphamide (Cytoxan ). You may have a higher chance for getting certain cancers when taking Enbrel with cyclophosphamide. ° Anti-diabetic medicines. If you have diabetes and are taking medication to control your diabetes, your healthcare provider may decide you need less anti-diabetic medicine while taking Enbrel. Keep a list of all your medications with you to show your healthcare provider and pharmacist each time you get a new medicine. Ask your healthcare provider if you are not sure if your medicine is one listed above. Other important medical information you should tell your healthcare provider before starting Enbrel, includes if you: • have or had a nervous system problem such as multiple sclerosis or Guillain-Barré syndrome. • have or had heart failure. • are scheduled to have surgery. • have recently received or are scheduled to receive a vaccine. ° All vaccines should be brought up-to-date before starting Enbrel. ° People taking Enbrel should not receive live vaccines. ° Ask your healthcare provider if you are not sure if you received a live vaccine.
• are allergic to rubber or latex. ° The needle covers on the single-dose prefilled syringes, the needle® covers within the white caps on the single-dose prefilled SureClick autoinjectors, and within the purple caps of the Enbrel Mini™ cartridges contain dry natural rubber. • have been around someone with varicella zoster (chicken pox). • are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. It is not known if Enbrel will harm your unborn baby. If you took Enbrel during pregnancy, talk to your healthcare provider prior to administration of live vaccines to your infant. • are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. Enbrel can pass into breast milk. Talk to your healthcare provider about the best way to feed your baby while taking Enbrel. See the section “What are the possible side effects of Enbrel?” below for more information. What is Enbrel? Enbrel is a prescription medicine called a Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF) blocker. Enbrel is used to treat: • moderately to severely active rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Enbrel can be used alone or with a medicine called methotrexate. • moderately to severely active polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) in children ages 2 years and older. • psoriatic arthritis (PsA). Enbrel can be used alone or with methotrexate. • ankylosing spondylitis (AS). • chronic moderate to severe plaque psoriasis (PsO) in children 4 years and older and adults who may benefit from taking injections or pills (systemic therapy) or phototherapy (ultraviolet light). You may continue to use other medicines that help treat your condition while taking Enbrel, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and prescription steroids, as recommended by your healthcare provider. Enbrel can help reduce joint damage and the signs and symptoms of the above mentioned diseases. People with these diseases have too much of a protein called tumor necrosis factor (TNF), which is made by your immune system. Enbrel can reduce the effect of TNF in the body and block the damage that too much TNF can cause, but it can also lower the ability of your immune system to fight infections. See “What is the most important information I should know about Enbrel?” and “What are the possible side effects of Enbrel?” Who should not use Enbrel? Do not use Enbrel if you: • have an infection that has spread through your body (sepsis). How should I use Enbrel? • Enbrel is given as an injection under the skin (subcutaneous or SC). • If your healthcare provider decides that you or a caregiver can give the injections of Enbrel at home, you or your caregiver should receive training on the right way to prepare and inject Enbrel. Do not try to inject Enbrel until you have been shown the right way by your healthcare provider or nurse. • Enbrel is available in the forms listed below. Your healthcare provider will prescribe the type that is best for you. ° Single-dose Prefilled Syringe ® ° Single-dose Prefilled SureClick Autoinjector Vial ° Multiple-dose ™ ™ ° Enbrel Mini single-dose cartridge used in the AutoTouch reusable autoinjector • See the detailed “Instructions for Use” with this Medication Guide for instructions about the right way to store, prepare, and give your Enbrel injections at home. • Your healthcare provider will tell you how often you should use Enbrel. Do not miss any doses of Enbrel. If you forget to use Enbrel, inject your dose as soon as you remember. Then, take your next dose at your regular(ly) scheduled time. In case you are not sure when to inject Enbrel, call your healthcare provider or pharmacist. Do not use Enbrel more often than as directed by your healthcare provider. • Your child’s dose of Enbrel depends on his or her weight. Your child’s healthcare provider will tell you which form of Enbrel to use and how much to give your child. What are the possible side effects of Enbrel? Enbrel can cause serious side effects, including: • See “What is the most important information I should know about Enbrel?” • Infections. Enbrel can make you more likely to get infections or make any infection that you have worse. Call your healthcare provider right away if you have any symptoms of an infection. See “Before starting Enbrel, be sure to talk to your healthcare provider” for a list of symptoms of infection. • Previous Hepatitis B infection. If you have been previously infected with the hepatitis B virus (a virus that affects the liver), the virus can become active while you use Enbrel. Your healthcare provider may do a blood test before you start treatment with Enbrel and while you use Enbrel. • Nervous system problems. Rarely, people who use TNF-blocker medicines have developed nervous system problems such as multiple sclerosis, seizures, or inflammation of the nerves of the eyes. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you get any of these symptoms:
numbness or tingling in any part of your body, vision changes, weakness in your arms and legs, and dizziness. • Blood problems. Low blood counts have been seen with other TNF-blocker medicines. Your body may not make enough of the blood cells that help fight infections or help stop bleeding. Symptoms include fever, bruising or bleeding very easily, or looking pale. • Heart failure including new heart failure or worsening of heart failure you already have. New or worse heart failure can happen in people who use TNF-blocker medicines like Enbrel. If you have heart failure your condition should be watched closely while you take Enbrel. Call your healthcare provider right away if you get new or worsening symptoms of heart failure while taking Enbrel, such as shortness of breath or swelling of your lower legs or feet. • Psoriasis. Some people using Enbrel developed new psoriasis or worsening of psoriasis they already had. Tell your healthcare provider if you develop red scaly patches or raised bumps that may be filled with pus. Your healthcare provider may decide to stop your treatment with Enbrel. • Allergic reactions. Allergic reactions can happen to people who use TNF-blocker medicines. Call your healthcare provider right away if you have any symptoms of an allergic reaction. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include a severe rash, a swollen face, or trouble breathing. • Autoimmune reactions, including: ° Lupus-like syndrome. Symptoms include a rash on your face and arms that gets worse in the sun. Tell your healthcare provider if you have this symptom. Symptoms may go away when you stop using Enbrel. ° Autoimmune hepatitis. Liver problems can happen in people who use TNF-blocker medicines, including Enbrel. These problems can lead to liver failure and death. Call your healthcare provider right away if you have any of these symptoms: feel very tired, skin or eyes look yellow, poor appetite or vomiting, pain on the right side of your stomach (abdomen). Common side effects of Enbrel include: • Injection site reactions such as redness, swelling, itching, or pain. These symptoms usually go away within 3 to 5 days. If you have pain, redness, or swelling around the injection site that does not go away or gets worse, call your healthcare provider. • Upper respiratory infections (sinus infections). These are not all the side effects with Enbrel. Tell your healthcare provider about any side effect that bothers you or does not go away. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088. How should I store Enbrel? • Store Enbrel in the refrigerator between 36°F to 46°F (2°C to 8°C). • Store Enbrel in the original carton to protect from light or damage. • If needed, you may store the Enbrel prefilled syringe, SureClick® autoinjector, Enbrel Mini cartridge or the dose tray for the multi-dose vial at room temperature between 68°F to 77°F (20°C to 25°C) for up to 14 days. ° Once Enbrel has reached room temperature, do not put it back in the refrigerator. • Throw away Enbrel that has been stored at room temperature after 14 days. • Mixed Enbrel multi-dose vial should be used right away or kept in the refrigerator at 36°F to 46°F (2°C to 8°C) for up to 14 days. • Do not store Enbrel in extreme heat or cold such as in your vehicle’s glove box or trunk. • Do not freeze. • Do not shake. • Keep Enbrel and all medicines out of the reach of children. Women need to know they
DON’T HAVE TO TAKE IT
Last year, 19.5 million American women were bullied at work. Infuriatingly, there wasn’t much they could do about it. Let’s all help change that. BY JESSICA PRESS
GETTY IMAGES.
my inbox was flooded—overflowing with incoming
mail. I’d put out the call to a handful of experts and Facebook groups for women’s stories of workplace bullying. I thought perhaps I’d hear from a dozen women. Instead, within a week, nearly a hundred stories from around the country and around the world poured in, with a steady stream continuing in the days and weeks that followed. They worked in hospitals, academia, sales, food service—anywhere and everywhere. REDBOOKMAG.COM
There were women still living in fear of retaliation. There were those who shared their journeys of deteriorating marriages, depression, anxiety, and PTSD-like symptoms. There were a surprising number who had involved lawyers and were limited in what they could even reveal due to nondisclosure agreements. The story I heard from Jill C. ticked all three boxes. “I’d worked at my job for about a decade, and when I came back from maternity leave, I had a new boss,”

That only escalated the bullying. “My new boss went back to HR with the most baseless accusations against me. I had coworkers and even my direct supervisor defending me, but HR took my boss’s side,” she says. Jill lost weight from the stress and says she developed anxiety despite having no history of it. “I eventually went to someone at the top of the company, who admitted having heard similar stories over the years and encouraged me to keep standing up for myself.” That support proved useless without action, though, and Jill ultimately got a lawyer and negotiated a settlement, the terms of which prevent her from using her last name here. “It is such a relief to be out of that toxic place. But I work in a small industry and am fearful of her spreading rumors or otherwise sabotaging my ability to earn a livelihood,” she says. That’s the thing about bullying, the common thread that ran through all the stories I heard: It makes you feel helpless. In 2017, 30 million American workers were targets of bullying— 65% of them were women. A University of Illinois at Chicago study showed that workplace bullying was 2.5 to 3.5 times more prevalent than workplace sexual harassment, and its mental health impact has been found to be worse. Yet despite its prevalence and harmful effects, unless there is proof that you are being bullied because of your gender, race, or inclusion in a protected group, “it is not legally actionable, and that has allowed it to run with impunity,” says Gary Namie, Ph.D., cofounder and
Women are becoming more vocal because for the first time,
THEY HAVE CONFIDENCE THEY WILL BE BELIEVED.” director of the Workplace Bullying Institute (WBI). But now there are signs that the tide is changing.
FINALLY, VALIDATION
The topic of workplace bullying has been bubbling up more and more recently. As I was writing the final draft of this piece, Miss America 2018, Cara Mund, posted an open letter on Facebook in which she defined workplace bullying and claimed that higher-ups in the Miss America organization had “systematically silenced me, reduced me, marginalized me…in subtle and not-so-subtle ways on a daily basis.” She continued, “After a while, the patterns have clearly emerged, and the sheer accumulation of the disrespect, passive-aggressive behavior, belittlement, and outright exclusion has taken a serious toll.” (The organization denied her claims.) But many of the women I heard from had realized only recently that workplace bullying was a bona fide thing, a defined phenomenon. Not recognizing bullying for what it is isn’t surprising given how our culture often pardons, redeems, and even rewards bullying behavior as a means of getting results. Just think of the pervasive pop culture examples: Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada is REDBOOKMAG.COM

one of the most famous, a fearsome leader whose abusive behavior people tolerate or look past in light of her expertise, brilliance, and power. The misperception that bullying is a schoolyard issue, not something that happens to adults, also contributes to the self-doubt that so many targets feel. “Every day I would come to work feeling like, What is she going to do today? remembers Deb Falzoi. “Now that I know the ways bullies work, I realize she was very textbook. There were false accusations, removal of my responsibilities. At the time I didn’t know what to call what was happening to me. When I finally found the term ‘workplace bullying’ and saw that there was research on the issue, I felt a sense of relief. I hear that same thing from other targets.” Falzoi has since founded Dignity Together, which helps targets, therapists, and employers address workplace bullying—including understanding which behaviors cross the line into abuse. Bullying behaviors include the expected “yelling, shouting, and screaming” as well as “use of put-downs, insults, and excessively harsh criticism” and more subtle actions meant solely to undermine, like “unreasonably heavy work demands” that cannot possibly be met and “discounting achievements and stealing credit for ideas or work.” Bullying is not just a onetime explosion from a boss or coworker on a bad day. According to WBI, it is “repeated, healthharming mistreatment of one or more persons (the targets) by one or more perpetrators.” It is abusive conduct or verbal abuse that is threatening, humiliating, or intimidating, Namie explains. “Some psychologists say bullying is a violation of the employer’s agreement to provide safety,” says Namie. “OSHA-style safety is physical, but psychological safety can be even more important.”
TAKING ACTION
Namie and his wife, Ruth, the cofounder of WBI, along with David Yamada, professor of law and director of the New Workplace Institute at Suffolk University Law School in Boston, are leading a movement to pass the Healthy Workplace Bill, which Yamada wrote. The bill would give both workers and employers clear-cut rights and clearly defined boundaries, which are of course the basis of any healthy relationship, professional or otherwise. “It provides an incentive for employers to adopt reasonable steps to prevent and correct bullying, which translates to having a policy and faithfully enforcing it,” explains Namie. In the meantime, what can any of us do when the stakes are so high—when so many of us are supporting families and relying on a paycheck or health insurance and don’t have the luxury of just walking away? For starters, we can begin talking. “A lot of times what happens when we’re experiencing bullying at work is we don’t have the courage to go forward and have the conversations with someone at a senior level or someone in HR who can
help us resolve whatever’s going on,” says Sarah Sheehan, the cofounder of Bravely, a new resource that connects employees with neutral coaches outside the workplace for confidential conversations. Having been bullied herself in previous jobs, Sheehan believes passionately in Bravely’s mission. “I left a job that I had so many high hopes for because I could not work under the level of bullying I was experiencing,” she says. Had she had a resource like Bravely then, perhaps things would not have gone that far. Namie is skeptical of HR’s ability to broker change, and Teresa A. Daniel, Ph.D., an employment lawyer and dean of the Human Resource Leadership Program at Sullivan University in Louisville, KY, agrees that going to HR can make things worse—and has in many cases. Nonetheless, she argues that it is the first step: “HR can be a great resource, but it depends on the culture of the organization. At organizations that say, ‘We treat everybody with respect and won’t allow this kind of interaction to stand,’ bullies end up either getting fired or quitting.”
If taking the issue higher up doesn’t net results, Daniel advises women to begin “an aggressive search for a new job. The problem with staying in a workplace bullying situation is that over time you start to feel devalued, and the more devalued you feel, the less confident you are to go out and get another job. So it’s a real slippery slope.” Our experts are hopeful that soon, quitting won’t be the best option most women feel they have. “For the first time, I am really hopeful,” Daniel says. “I think the changes we are seeing with respect to sexual harassment after the #MeToo movement are going to spill over. Women are becoming more vocal because for the first time they have some confidence that they will be believed. The atmosphere is changing, and corporations will hopefully realize they can’t tolerate any kind of bad behavior at work and will impose accountability,” she says. Whether or not those changes come to pass in the near future, the bottom line is, says Daniel, “It’s important for women to know that they don’t have to take it anymore.” Kristen Caminiti’s sons’ shirts say it all.
More ways to help
Redbook and TLC Network are teaming up to honor heroes fighting bullying in their communities. Here’s what three of our “Give a Little TLC” award recipients want you to know. HAVE “THE TALK” EARLY “I’ve heard people say, ‘My kid’s too young and innocent to learn about bullying.’ But nobody ever says their kid isn’t old enough to learn kindness,” says Kristen Caminiti. So the social worker founded Kindness Grows Here, which helps teach Maryland children how to practice compassion. “If we stop kids from becoming bullies, then
there won’t be any victims to worry about,” she says. REASSURE THEM IT WON’T GET WORSE—that may convince children to speak up. “I hear all the time that kids don’t tell because the bully threatened that if they do, they will get it 10 times worse,” says Jaylen Arnold, 18. GETTING STA RTED
A measuring tape is going to be your BFF, says Paloma Contreras, author of Dream Design Live—because your first step is figuring out how to make the most of your room’s square footage.
Play with scale.
“I include a large-scale piece for visual interest, no matter the room size,” says Contreras. That doesn’t have to mean a space-eating sofa—oversize art will do.
Place it just right.
When designing your layout, make sure to leave about 18 inches between a sofa and a coffee table and keep at least 12 inches of floor between a rug and a wall.
Choose a focal point. A fireplace or a TV is a natural option. You’ll want to highlight that area with lighting or art and balance it with vignettes throughout the room that draw the eye.
Making a plan Behind every smooth project is a smart strategy. That’s why interior designer Libby Langdon says not to buy a single thing until you:
1
PICK YOUR INSPIR ATION. You can’t go wrong with a favorite color or vacation spot as a jumping-off point. “Building a room around the things you love means you’ll adore the space every time you walk in,” says Langdon. And don’t feel pressure to include a trend just because it’s everywhere!
2
CREATE A BUDGET. Come up with an amount that you’re willing to spend and build your wish list according to that figure. Shop around to see what things realistically cost, then create a spreadsheet to keep track of your spending and to ensure that one thing isn’t sucking up all your money.
3
MAP OUT THE TIMELINE. Don’t try and cram it all into one weekend—allow more time than you think you need. Print a calendar so you can assign to-do’s to certain days and literally see when things will happen. For big renos, plan for plumbing and electrical to be done before carpet and painting.
Measure and sketch.
Outline the dimensions of what you have and what you’re considering buying—rugs, chairs, tables—with painter’s tape so you can see exactly how things will fit.

Picking your color palette There are a lot of pretty hues out there, and a lot of ways to use them. Nicole Gibbons, a color-loving designer and founder of paint brand Clare, outlines where and how to add them to your space.
START WITH ACCESSORIES Don’t underestimate the power of accents like vases, lamps, throw pillows—even flowers, says Gibbons. They may be small, but they can bring just enough color to an otherwise neutral room and can be easily (and affordably) swapped as seasons and trends change.
Neutral backdrop Follow this blueprint: Choose two easygoing, nonboring neutrals for one cool and one warm accent to play off of.

START WITH FURNITURE You fell in love with a bright chair, table, or bookshelf but worry about how it’ll all work? When including multiple colored pieces, go monochromatic or try pairing ones from opposite sides of the color wheel for foolproof mixing. Also, rethink what you consider a bold color. “A navy is an easy neutral, but it will really stand out in a room,” says Gibbons.

START WITH THE WALL Before picking out swatches, you have to consider the light. “Try a warm tone for a north-facing room that gets a cooler light throughout the day and a cool color for a sunny, south-facing space,” Gibbons says. “And remember that east- and westfacing rooms experience the most drastic change of direct light from morning to evening, so make sure you test it out to see how it looks throughout the day.”

5 - INGREDIENT TOMATO PIE
Carla with her mom, Audrey, and sister, Kimberly.
Meaty Mac and Cheese CARLA'S SPIN: Stir some
tasty tomato-meat sauce into classic mac and cheese to cut back on the cheese without sacrificing flavor.
Active: 40 min. Total: 40 min. 1 lb elbow macaroni 1 lb ground beef chuck Kosher salt and pepper 1 small onion, finely chopped 2 cloves garlic, chopped 3 Tbsp tomato paste 1 tsp mustard powder 1/2 tsp paprika 1/4 tsp cayenne 2 Tbsp unsalted butter 2 Tbsp all-purpose flour 2 cups whole milk 8 oz sharp Cheddar cheese, coarsely grated 1. Cook macaroni per pkg. directions. Drain, then rinse under cold water until cool. 2. Meanwhile, heat a large Dutch oven on high until very hot. Add beef, 1 tsp salt, and 1/4 tsp pepper and cook, breaking up into small pieces, until browned, about 5 minutes. 3. Push beef to one side of pot and add onion, garlic, 1/2 tsp salt, and 1/4 tsp pepper to other side and cook, stirring occasionally, until tender, 3 minutes. Stir onion mixture into beef and push all to one side of pan. Add tomato paste to other side, reduce heat to medium, and cook, stirring, 1 minute, then stir into beef to combine. Add mustard powder, paprika, and cayenne and cook, stirring, 1 minute. 4. Reduce heat to medium-low. Push everything to one side of the pan and add butter to the other side. When butter melts, add flour to butter and cook, stirring, 2 minutes. Stir into meat mixture; then, still stirring, gradually add milk, 1/4 cup at a time. Continue stirring until mixture bubbles steadily for 2 minutes. Reduce heat to low and stir in cheese to melt. Fold
in pasta and season with salt and pepper; serve immediately. Serves 8. Per serving: 510 cal, 24 g fat (12 g sat), 28 g pro, 615 mg sodium, 49 g carb, 5 g fiber
Buttermilk Chopped Salad CARLA’S SPIN: It’s the
horseradish that makes this dressing. Toss it with whatever’s in season (in the winter, I like to use shredded kale or Brussels sprouts). You might just be surprised by how eager your kids are to eat their veggies.
Active: 10 min. Total: 10 min. 1/2 cup buttermilk 1/2 cup mayonnaise 2 Tbsp prepared horseradish, drained 2 Tbsp apple cider vinegar 1/2 small clove garlic, finely grated 1/4 tsp cayenne Kosher salt and pepper 12 cups mixed greens 4 cups sliced assorted vegetables (a favorite combo: carrot ribbons, sliced radishes, and cucumbers) 1. In a medium bowl, whisk together buttermilk, mayonnaise, horseradish, vinegar, garlic, cayenne, and 1/2 tsp each salt and pepper until smooth. 2. Toss mixed greens and vegetables in a large bowl. Season lightly with salt and toss again. Drizzle on just enough dressing to coat and toss gently until everything is skimmed with dressing. Serve with more dressing on the side.
3 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil, plus more for pan 1/2 loaf (about 12 oz) country bread, sliced 1/2 in. thick 5 ripe medium tomatoes 3 cloves garlic, finely grated 2 tsp fresh thyme leaves Kosher salt 1. Heat oven to 450°F. Lightly oil a 9-in. square baking pan. 2. Cover bottom of pan with a single layer of bread. Brush bread with 1 Tbsp oil and bake until golden brown and toasted, 8 to 10 minutes. 3. Meanwhile, core tomatoes and trim a bit off tops and bottoms. Cut each in half through its equator. In a large bowl, mix garlic with remaining 2 Tbsp oil. 4. Arrange tomatoes, cut sides up, in a single layer over bread, pressing down gently. Brush tomatoes with some garlic oil and sprinkle with 1 tsp thyme and 1/2 tsp salt. 5. Tear remaining bread into pieces and toss in remaining garlic oil to coat. Scatter over tomatoes along with remaining thyme and bake until tomatoes are juicy and top is golden brown and crisp, 22 to 30 minutes.
1/2 cup molasses 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar 1/3 cup fresh orange juice 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar 2 cloves garlic, finely grated 1 tsp grated fresh ginger 1 tsp cayenne 1. Heat oven to 450°F. Line a large rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper (make sure parchment covers entire pan—this will help with cleanup later) and fit a wire rack on top. 2. Season chicken wings with 1 tsp each salt and pepper. Arrange in single layer on the prepared rack. Roast until skin is taut and meat is parcooked, about 30 minutes. 3. Meanwhile, in a small saucepan, whisk together molasses, sugar, orange juice, vinegar, garlic, ginger, cayenne, and 1 tsp salt and bring to a boil, whisking to dissolve sugar. Reduce and simmer until syrupy, about 15 minutes. 4. Transfer wings from rack to parchment. Pour syrup over them and toss to evenly coat. Arrange wings in a single layer and roast, flipping wings and spooning syrup over them every 10 minutes, until glazed and caramelized, 25 to 30 minutes. 5. Use tongs to carefully transfer wings to a serving platter, leaving sauce behind in the pan. Serve when cool enough to handle. Serves 6. Per serving: 325 cal, 18 g fat (5.5 g sat), 25 g pro, 535 mg sodium, 14 g carb, 0 g fiber
