blast from the past

We’ve been sharing great decorating ideas for a decade! Here’s a look back at our April 2014 issue. playing with every pattern

art is where the home is

Stripes, diamonds, florals—we blend them all together. The more prints the merrier, cause a mix never fails to pretty up a space.

We’ll be forever fans of happy art on walls. In this issue, we gave extra love and attention to custom house portraits—how sweet! You can find lots of talented artists on Etsy who can replicate your place in a watercolor, a drawing, an illustration—whatever you fancy. A trend we’re watching with heart eyes now: cross-stitch creations of homes.

mini makeovers, maximum punch

We’re all for gut renos, but we consider small-scale redos equally exciting: What easier way to perk up a place? It’s why we encouraged you to elevate your pens-and-pencils container to a whimsical cup, wrap a plain lampshade with yarn in shades of blue, and attach jumbo pom-poms to your throw pillows. The possibilities are as endless as the ooh-ness.

there’s a cute one of those, too

Our market editors have always been pros at finding the most adorable varieties of everyday stuff. Along with this bread-shaped plate (for a similar look, try Stonewell Kitchen), some other legendary faves include a pineapple-shaped hamper (from Pottery Barn Teen), Popsicle string lights (Ooga Lights), a USA-shaped pillow (Love California on Etsy), even a pink garden hose (Garden Glory).

10 super-wow things to do

with painter’s tape

1

DIY a giant calendar. On a bare wall, make a grid that has seven squares across and six squares going down using ScotchBlue Sharp Lines Painter’s Tape (the Edge-Lock technology seals out paint to deliver sharp paint lines). Fill in with chalkboard or dry-erase paint. Once paint is dry, add events and to-dos with colorful chalk or dry-erase markers.

2 3

Give a chair a dipped look.

Tape off the top half of all four legs, then paint the bottoms— seriously cute.

Make shelving stand out.

Paint only the edges of open shelving. Place strips of painter’s tape on the areas above and below before you do it. After, prepare for compliments.

4

5 6

8 9

7

10

Checkerboard a wood floor.

Tape off a diagonal grid using Scotch Delicate Surface Painter’s Tape and brush on alternating blocks of white and a vibrant shade.

Add a pop in an unexpected spot. Paint one

side of a door a bright color—the door of a kids’ room, a bathroom, a closet. Use painter’s tape on the door’s edges for really crisp lines.

Stripe a dresser. Tape off sections

as wide as you’d like. The more contrasting the colors, the better. Remove tape when the paint is dry to the touch—typically one hour after application.

Color-block your stairs. Cover

treads with painter’s tape and paint the risers. Go for pastel-ish hues like these, or a mix of primary colors. It’s an excellent project for leftover paint.

Color your window trim.

It’s striking in a room that has white walls. Use ScotchBlue Ultra Sharp Lines Painter’s Tape to protect the windowpanes and surrounding wall before painting with your color of choice.

Create the best gallery wall. Instead of using regular

frames, paint them! On a wall, tape off rectangles and squares that are a few inches taller and wider than your prints; fill in with paint. Then tack your unframed prints right onto the wall, centered in the shapes. Make all your “frames” one color or a rainbow of shades.

Paint a faux headboard.

Redecorate your bedroom without spending big bucks. Just outline the shape of a headboard on the wall behind the bed with tape and fill in with paint.

IT’S OUR

HOW TO CHOOSE THE PERFECT MATTRESS You spend one-third of your life in bed, why not make it wonderful? ― MAKE IT PERSONAL

Scale the size to your space and match the firmness to your sleep style. Map out your bedroom to determine whether a king or a queen would be the best fit. If you sleep with a partner (or pets!), it may be worth sizing up. Find the right feel—Firm, Plush, or Ultra Plush— based on your usual sleep position.

Designer Spotlight Corey Damen Jenkins @coreydamenjenkins

The nationally acclaimed designer shares how to make the most of your bedroom. What are the elements of a perfect sleep sanctuary? The proper color palette is essential. It’s important to know whether visual movement inhibits you from calming down. If so, stick to the monochromatic and avoid pattern play on pillows, wall coverings, and rugs.

― THINK LONG TERM

A high-quality mattress should last up to 10 years, so invest in comfort, durability, and support. Research how it’s made—the materials used for the interior and the exterior can have a major impact on comfort and durability over time.

Tips for finding the best bedding? I help my clients create their dream beds through a series of discussions, and ultimately, it comes down to taste and budget. Choose brands committed to quality and timeless design, and you’ll never go wrong.

― TRUST THE LEGACY

Seek out a brand with a proven track record. Stearns & Foster mattresses are crafted by hand, not massproduced. So much care is put into them that each mattress is handsigned by the Master Craftsman who built it.

What are some easy ways to refresh a bedroom? For a quick update, switch out the table lamps on your nightstands, or hang a fantastic mural or wallpaper behind the bed to serve as an accent wall. How can one make an investment purchase less intimidating? The best way to avoid mistakes is to hire an interior designer! We always say, “Measure twice and shop once.” Double-check your dimensions before making a big purchase— there are few things worse than buying an amazing bed that movers can’t fit through your front door!

― ELEVATE YOUR COMFORT

A Legacy of Design in Every Stitch

At Stearns & Foster, we believe that exceptional design lives in the details. This is why we have spent every day of our 175-year legacy committed to refining the details that make Stearns & Foster distinct. From velvet trim to hand-tufted top layers, our mattresses are meticulously crafted to look as good as they feel. Use our tips to help you choose the perfect mattress to complete your bedroom sanctuary.

LEARN MORE AT STEARNSANDFOSTER.COM

We’re spending more time in our bedrooms than ever before—from working to reading to bingeing the latest series. Adding an adjustable base to your mattress can optimize comfort, making your bed a life hub by day and a sleep sanctuary by night.

THE DIYER: Jodi Bond of @houseonasugarhill “When my vegetable garden got to be too much to handle, I turned part of it into a mini retreat. I removed a few beds and built an 8-foot-by-12-foot patio out of pressure-treated pine boards attached with deck fasteners beneath. After doing a tan-color stain, I created a geometric pattern using painter’s tape for straight lines and a half-circle stencil for the curves, then filled them in with pink- and brown-tinted stains. It looks great, and no weeding!” 32 HGTV Magazine

For a designer and his family, this New Jersey ranch turned out to be The One.

ood bones, about an acre of land, a quiet street—the 1960s Upper Saddle River, NJ, home that designer/builder John Colaneri found was full of flip potential. Sure, the rooms were small and dark, but it wasn’t anything he hadn’t seen in 14 years of working in construction (and a rise to fame on the HGTV show Kitchen Cousins). John snatched it up. As he put reno plans in place, though, he started thinking: keeper. “I remember standing by a beautiful maple tree in the backyard and picturing our daughters running around,” he says. “That’s when I knew.” Instead of making the ranch another notch in his tool belt, John and his wife, Jennifer, made it their own. They opened up rooms, let in light by expanding window openings, and gave extra TLC to the kitchen and living room, their family’s favorite hangouts. And they lived happily ever after.

how bad is it if there’s always water in the teakettle?

GETTY IMAGES

Whether one is made of stainless steel, enamel, ceramic, or copper, it’s susceptible to damage from stagnant water, says Lisa Boalt Richardson, director of the World Tea Academy in New York City. Over time, minerals in H₂0 tend to create a buildup of lime scale. While that may be hard to see inside your kettle, it can corrode the metal lining. Besides, reboiling what’s left over from yesterday’s herbal brew could prove disappointing. Oxygen and other natural gases in water give tea a certain flavor, and heating reduces their levels, which might mean a dullish taste. Descale once in a while by heating a mix of half water and half vinegar and letting it soak overnight. In the morning, pour it out, rinse, and heat up fresh water. The ideal, says Richardson, “is to dump any remaining water from a kettle every time you use it. You can always let the water cool, then give it to your plants.”

how bad is it to buy a fixer-upper if you’ve never fixer-uppered before?

Take it from Jenny Marrs of Fixer to Fabulous: “When you’re willing to put in the investment and the time and learn on the job, any home can be turned into the one of your dreams.” Before making an offer, though, have a handle on what you’re getting into. “A lot of people want to skip the cost of a home inspection,” says Jenny, “but you need to know what issues exist to get a scope of the project and the budget.” Expect to tack on 25% once walls are opened, which may reveal electrical, plumbing, or other problems that licensed pros should handle. (Fun fact: Jenny and husband Dave found vintage postcards in the walls of their first reno.) “Remodeling plans change—pivot and don’t pressure yourself to make everything go as scheduled,” says Jenny. “Like Dave and I tell ourselves, ‘It’s just sticks and bricks!’ ”

not so bad!

Here’s the dirt—don’t. If your poor pothos or fiddle-leaf fig kicked the bucket because of aphids or spider mites, even if you only ever saw them on leaves, some could be hiding in the soil and might infect the next plant, says Calliope Correia, a horticulturist at the Fresno State Horticulture Nursery in California. The same goes for fungus. And if your plant was done in by overwatering or it was on the older side, the soil has likely been leached of nutrients. Hit the garden center for a fresh bag. “It’s inexpensive and protective,” says Correia. “Fresh soil makes for stronger, happier plants, which have better defense systems against future attacks.”

how bad is it to use inexpensive face wash?

“I often tell patients that cleansers are one of the smartest places to save money in a beauty routine,” says Sheila Farhang, M.D., a dermatologist in Tucson, AZ. “Drugstore options can be just as good as more expensive kinds, including ones for people with sensitive or acne-prone skin, because for the most part they have similar ingredients.” When it comes to more costly face washes, you may be shelling out for a proprietary fragrance or posher packaging. “Those might be worth the extra money for people who want their skin care routine to feel luxurious, or to look that way on the shelf,” says Dr. Farhang. You could mix it up: She has a pricey exfoliating cleanser and drugstore kinds like Cetaphil and CeraVe in rotation.

NOT BAD AT ALL!

Feel free, since broken glass generally isn’t recyclable. The key is to avoid shards poking through the garbage bag when it’s time to toss it. That’s actually less of an issue for sanitation workers: “The men and women out there collecting garbage are trained to handle bags safely,” says Brandon Wright, a spokesperson for the National Waste & Recycling Association. Still, it’s easy enough to place jagged pieces in a small cardboard box, like the kind granola bars come in, or to tape the edges of a shattered mirror. (Skip wrapping jagged glass in newspaper— those ends could still be jabby.) Guess what? Baking soda plus white vinegar, however, is a handy combo for unclogging drains. Pour a mix of 1/2 cup baking soda and 1/4 cup table salt down the drain, followed by 1 cup warm distilled white vinegar. Let sit for 10 to 15 minutes, then flush with hot water.

Jeff and Kristin with Gabrielle, 7

K

ristin Mirek had always wanted to live in a light-filled, terra-cottatiled-roof home just like the Spanish-style stucco one her grandparents had. She found it in this 1924 Spanish bungalow in Los Angeles, complete with 20 windows and glass doors that lead to the outdoors in nearly every room. She ended up renting it out for several years when she moved to New York City to be with Jeff, her then boyfriend, and returned married with a toddler in tow. “The whole time I was away, I missed this house so much, especially the way we could go from inside to outside seamlessly,” says Kristin. To make their 1,800 square feet feel even more open and inviting without major construction, the Mireks enlisted designer Barbie Palomino. They refreshed some rooms with white paint, revived the kitchen and bathroom, added uplifting new pieces of furniture, and created one seriously dreamy outdoor oasis. The result: a space where it’s breezy and bright every single day.

The nook— original, like the fireplace—is practically made for a vase with a leafy cutting.

living room

Recovering the sunbleached sofa was both practical and inspiring. “The color reminds me of the blue skies we have here,” says Kristin. A vintage Moroccan rug and a pair of chairs, covered in chenille Robert Allen fabric, are equally spirited, while mini glass tables open the space. Striped curtains echo the stripes on the awning. And that humongous rubber plant? It hides the neighbors’ garbage cans.

kitchen

To import the exterior’s charm, Barbie suggested painting the dark wood cabinets the shade of the terra-cotta roof tile and doing Mediterraneanstyle floor tile (it’s from Cement Tile Shop). Putting a banquette with poppy pillows and a pedestal table in an empty corner has brightened up breakfast. “With another table and chairs outside, it’s become one big dining and entertaining space,” says Kristin.

Flush with color and pattern, it’s quite the fun place to hang. “Comfort was also a priority,” says Kristin, hence the custom oversize velvet sectional in burnt orange, supremely fluffy Anthropologie shag rug, and funky pillows that offer a soft landing when Gabrielle and her friends play and tumble. An oak-top coffee table from Industry West brings in a natural element.

It’s got that eco-chic spa thing going on, thanks to a 6-foot-long claw-foot bathtub, a mix of crisp white square tiles from Bedrosians on the walls and tranquil forest green ones on the floor by Clé, and a glass-enclosed shower. Listening to birds chirp while you brush your teeth: divine.

Flowery bedding from H&M and a blush rug from Urban Outfitters mingle with a chest from Kristin’s grandparents, which layers in yet more family history. Seen through the French doors off the redwood deck, this room could well be in an island resort. “One of our favorite things to do on weekend mornings is to throw open the doors, read the paper, and drink coffee in bed,” says Kristin. Boho patterns in soft hues, including a rug by Momeni on the bedroom floor, amplify the exotic ambiance. Those paintings above the bed are from Cartagena, Colombia, where the couple met while on separate vacations.

Kristin’s Spanish bungalow fantasy had always included a giant hot tub. She had this stone stunner built when she was single, never imagining how family-friendly it would be. “It’s where Gabrielle learned to swim!” she says. Pavers surrounded by grass, a roomy lounger (from Pottery Barn), and a tasseled World Market umbrella complete the retreat.

When their children gather in another room to watch TV, homeowners Reem and Hesham retreat to this cozy space. The limestone fireplace, with its arch and rosette details, had seemed formal at first; the asymmetry of custom shelves on one side and a gallery wall on the other relaxed it. Barrel chairs from RH, a triangular coffee table from Article, and a striped rug from Revival also transport the room to 2021.

ike most home buyers, Reem and Hesham Hassaballa had a wish list. More space topped it, along with new construction, just like their previous homes had been. “That was the look we always loved,” says Reem, who runs the blog Reem’s Design. Then their realtor suggested they check out a five-bedroom home in a great location in the Chicago suburbs…that was built in 1910. “As we walked up the steps, Hesham said, ‘You know I’m just humoring you, I’d never buy a home this old!’ ” Reem recalls. Sure enough, it had humongous radiators and inoperable windows. But most of the house had been renovated, the ceilings were high and the light abundant, and white oak floors and seven fireplaces proved irresistible. After updating the windows, Reem decorated with timelessly chic pieces in soft colors, mixing in funky shapes for flair and plenty of crash spots for the kids. And she got used to the radiators, which give off awesome heat. Now, she says, “Hesham goes around showing off the original details to guests like it was our plan all along!” HGTV Magazine 79

Paintings from a consignment store on the right and Target art on the left personalize the area too.

Reem is kind of obsessed with that wainscoting, though it wasn’t something she would have ever chosen during her I-only-like-newbuilds phase. The main challenge: “I hesitated to put our bed in front of the bay window,” she says. “Luckily, it’s centered in the room and the setup looked great.” A cobalt blue sofa from Walter E. Not long before they moved, Reem and Sereen had redecorated Sereen’s room. They liked it so much they re-created it, down to the hanging chair from Anthropologie, which elevates FaceTime with friends and studying for exams. Sereen helped put up the removable floral wallpaper by ColoRay.

What we’ve learned about buying old

total turret charmer

Truths from Elizabeth and Ethan Finkelstein, hosts of Cheap Old Houses (catch the premiere August 9 on HGTV and streaming on discovery+)

STAY MOTIVATED “It takes a while for an old house to look Instagram-ready, especially if there are not-exciting projects to tackle first, like a foundation. Little updates—like a rug to cover scratches on the floor—will keep you hanging on during the wild ride.” CROWDSOURCE “The internet is full of people sharing restoration journeys. They’ve picked historic paint colors or whatever you’re struggling with. Go on, ask for advice.” NEVER MIND THE NAYSAYERS “People may say you’re crazy, but once you’re done with your reno, you’ll be the envy of the block!”

“Why tear out older stuff when you can make it work?!” says homeowner Cheryl Luckett.

in the kitchen

Cheryl paired a table found at an estate sale with a banquette from her furniture line.

c

heryl Luckett’s kitchen desperately needed help—it had dated vinyl flooring, bland white laminate counters, and zero color in sight. Yet unlike many past-their-prime kitchens, the cabinets didn’t need redoing, just reimagining. “They’re original from when the house was built in 2001, and they were in good shape,” says Cheryl, a designer who lives in Huntersville, NC. “I decided to work around them.” Sure enough, changing everything else totally updated the cabinets. A high-impact backsplash boosted their energy, while punches of orange and yellow jazzed up their honey-oak hue. That and some power-pattern mixing instilled a contemporary vibe. See? You can teach old wood new tricks!

100 HGTV Magazine

cabinets Black and brass pulls by Schaub & Company add sleekness. Cheryl replaced one cabinet with white oak open shelves. “As soon as I did that, everything felt more now,” she says.

A collection of chinoiserie vases and ginger jars add another layer of pattern on top of the cabinets.

paint color Moth Wing by Sherwin-Williams

backsplash The deep blue

of the Annie Selke tile enriches the wood’s tone, while a diamond pattern modernizes it. Floor tile (also by Annie Selke) in a subdued hue doesn’t compete. “To me it looks like seersucker, which makes my Southern heart skip a beat,” says Cheryl.

island It used to match the

cabinets; beadboard painted taupe grounds the kitchen’s new colors. Quartz countertops with gold veining bring brightness, and yellow counter stools from Designmaster Furniture pick up the yellow flecks in the curtains.

lighting

Cheryl swapped the existing fixtures for white lantern pendants and a black and bronze chandelier, from Hudson Valley Lighting. They’re trendy takes on oldschool styles, which ties them to the traditional cabinets. FOR SOURCES, SEE PAGE 110.

This summer, MAGNUM Ice Cream teamed up with Lisa Huff of Snappy Gourmet to develop an all-new recipe— featuring Magnum Mini Double Caramel ice cream bars.

T

hey are delicious all on their own, but for a special treat Lisa decided to pair them with her homemade caramel sauce, cream cheese whipped cream, and toasted pecans. The ice cream bars are delicious dipped in these “turtle-inspired” toppings. A fun treat for kids, but also a gourmet dessert for adults, these mini desserts are perfect for parties any time of the year. Simple and elegant! The best part? You don’t really need any fancy equipment to make these Turtle Cups. Magnum Mini Double Caramel ice cream bars are classic vanilla ice cream, dipped in a chocolaty layer, wrapped in caramel sauce and covered again in a cracking chocolate shell.
