ctober is my birthday month, and I could profess my love for pumpkins, all things orange, and Halloween for days, but instead I want to share a step-by-step process that’s been helping me lately when I screw up, which is a lot. Step 1. Fail hard. You’re human—yay! Everyone makes mistakes. And it’s going to be OK. Sit with it for a minute—but just a minute. Step 2. Figure it out. Ask yourself what happened and answer in as nonemotional, nonjudgmental a way as possible: This one thing is not a referendum on who you are or what you’re capable of in the future. Then use the info to make your next move. Step 3. Fix it. Take action. Is there something you can do to correct the situation, lessen the fallout, or be sure you don’t make the same error again? If so, do it ASAP. If you’re not sure, ask for help. And if there’s nothing you can do, look for the positive(s). That won’t change the situation, but it may crowd out discouragement, shame, or other negative feelings and help you move on. Step 4. Flashback. Build yourself back up by revisiting your greatest hits—all those things you have done and still do right. Think back to where and when you’ve succeeded in the past and consider how your behavior and choices got you there. Give yourself credit for your effort. Step 5. Forget it. You’ve done what you can. Now remember the lesson and go carve a pumpkin!

The life-changing diagnosis led to a full hip replacement this year—an experience that showed her the importance of being kind to her body. (It also helps that studying kindness is her day job as executive director of the UCLA Bedari Kindness Institute.) “I now appreciate the self-love and confidence that come with age,” she says.

I grew up thinking that being in the entertainment industry was all I ever wanted to do, but then I married Val and had my daughter, Natasha, and I changed my mind. I wanted to be home with my children and support my husband’s career. I’d heard multiple times that taking a sabbatical would be the end for me, but it didn’t matter. It wasn’t me changing my mind; it was God renewing my mind and my heart. Doubt was replaced with peace. Those years at home with family offered time with Jesus that prepared me for Act Two. It’s autumn—change is outside your window. Each morning, with my matcha in hand, I read my Bible, pray, and listen for a few minutes in my quiet spot. Fall is busy, but it is important to steal pockets of time for renewal. A changed mind brings a changed heart and a new you.

1 Fill large Dutch oven with 1½ in. oil and heat to 350°F. Set wire rack on rimmed baking sheet. In small bowl, combine granulated sugar and ½ tsp pie spice; set aside. 2 In large bowl, whisk together flour, brown sugar, baking powder, salt, and remaining ½ tsp pie spice. In separate bowl, whisk together cider, egg, and vanilla. Add cider mixture to dry ingredients, mixing until just combined. 3 Peel and core apple. Coarsely grate half of apple and cut other half into ¼-in. pieces. Gently fold into batter. 4 Working in batches, drop spoonfuls of batter (about 2 Tbsp each) into oil. Fry, turning once, until golden brown, 2 to 4 min. 5 Toss warm fritters in sugar mixture. Transfer to wire rack. Serve warm or at room temp.

Seared Pork Chops & Apples with Cider Sauce ACTIVE 30 MIN. ✦ TOTAL 40 MIN. SERVES 4

3 Gala apples, each cored and cut into 8 wedges 6 small shallots, quartered 3 Tbsp olive oil, divided 10 sprigs thyme, divided Kosher salt and pepper 4 small bone-in pork chops (about 2½ lbs) 1 12-oz bottle hard apple cider 1 Tbsp whole-grain mustard

1 Heat oven to 425°F. On rimmed baking sheet, toss apples and shallots with 1 Tbsp oil, 4 sprigs thyme, and a pinch of salt.

Roast until golden brown and tender, 13 to 15 min. 2 Meanwhile, heat remaining 2 Tbsp oil in large skillet on medium-high. Season pork chops with ½ tsp each salt and pepper and cook chops until golden brown and just cooked through (140°F on instantread thermometer), 7 to 9 min. per side; transfer to plates. 3 Drain off and discard any fat in skillet and return to mediumhigh heat. Add cider, mustard, and remaining 6 thyme sprigs and vigorously simmer until reduced to ⅓ cup, 8 to 10 min. Serve pork chops with roasted apples and shallots and spoon pan sauce over top.

Crumb topping ¾ cup all-purpose flour ½ cup packed brown sugar 3 Tbsp granulated sugar 1 tsp ground cinnamon ¼ tsp ground cardamom ½ tsp kosher salt ½ cup (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, cut into pieces 1 cup old-fashioned oats ¾ cup pecans, chopped

1 Make topping: In large bowl, whisk together flour, sugars, cinnamon, cardamom, and salt. Add butter and cut in with pastry blender or fingers until mixture resembles coarse meal. Add oats and pecans and press mixture into small clumps. Freeze while preparing filling. 2 Make filling: Heat oven to 375°F. Butter shallow 12-in. cast-iron skillet. In bowl, toss together apples, blackberries, sugar, cornstarch, lemon zest and juice, and salt. Transfer to prepared skillet. Why you shouldn’t take fainting lightly

F

ainting might seem like a dainty, no-big-deal moment in the movies—but in reality, it should be concerning. A dizzy spell can be caused by something relatively minor like dehydration or a more serious issue like heart trouble. In particular, fainting is often the first sign of sudden cardiac arrest, a condition in which the heart suddenly stops beating, halting blood flow to the brain and organs; if not treated immediately, it can be fatal. October is Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness Month, so it’s a good time to brush up on the must-knows that could save lives. SYMP TOMS : In addition to fainting, a person can also be dizzy, get light-headed, feel their heart race, or experience nausea or vomiting, shortness of breath, or chest pain in the hour before they faint.

WHO’ S AT RISK: People at higher risk include men, older individuals, African Americans, people with coronary artery disease or who have had a heart attack or heart failure, and those who misuse drugs or alcohol.

HOW TO TAKE ACTION: Call 911 immediately—this is a critical first step in order to save a life. Then perform hands-only CPR until emergency personnel arrive (if there’s more than one person around, one should call 911 while the other starts CPR). Here’s how: Using both hands, push hard and fast on the center of the chest.

s a two-time breast cancer survivor, Carolyn knows the self-esteem-building magic of a good wig. So when her sister-in-law Laura was diagnosed with breast cancer, Carolyn wanted to help her find one. It turned out the closest were hours away—and $3,000 or more. Then Carolyn’s other sister-in-law learned that she had a lump. Faced with finding a wig again, Carolyn had an idea: What if Laura donated her no-longerneeded wig? We could do this for other families, she thought. In 2011, Carolyn founded EBeauty, her wig exchange. It went from a grassroots organization collecting donations from a few hospitals in the DC area to having more than 50 hospital partners, receiving and distributing over 55,000 wigs. The power of a wig, Carolyn has seen, is enormous. “A lot of times, it isn’t until a woman sees her hair fall out that she fully realizes ‘I have cancer,’ ” says Carolyn. “And then she hears about a free wig. It’s like somebody’s actually got her back.” The women donating get to feel great too. “Once a woman has completed her cancer journey, she wants to help someone she doesn’t know. It’s a beautiful thing.” A beautiful thing indeed—with great hair.

sther and Alicia lost their sister Maria in 2019. “As we were m ourning and thinking of how we could celebrate her life, we thought about what helped her,” says Esther. The first thing that came to mind: travel. (After her initial biopsy, Maria went to Carnival in Trinidad and Tobago.) “That’s how we came up with Fight Through Flights.” The idea: a nonprofit combining Maria’s passion with their own expertise—Esther is a registered dietitian, and Alicia has a travel company—with the goal of improving mental health and wellness for Black women living with and affected by breast cancer. “Research shows that you’re already more likely to die than white women. You have the least chance of survival at every stage of diagnosis. We had to think about what travel and wellness opportunities would help these women cope,” says Alicia. The results—free travel experiences and access to personal trainers, registered dietitians, and mental health resources— make the recipient feel fully cared for. (There is also a staycation option for women who cannot travel due to family commitments or immunosuppression risks.) The reactions from the women who have been chosen have exceeded the Tambe sisters’ every expectation. “They’re just overwhelmed with joy,” says Esther. “And we’re so happy to know that we can provide support and empower their healing. ince 1999, Leslie had done the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure with her mom, breast cancer survivor Barbara Rhoades, as “Barb’s Babes.” In 2016, when Leslie was also diagnosed, “it turned into Team Les and Barb. We walked together as survivors,” says Leslie. Team Les and Barb was shocked when Komen announced that its Idaho branch was closing this year. “For my mom, the race is celebratory. For me, it’s more solemn. But it’s important to mark our survivorship,” Leslie says. She decided they could do a walk around the neighborhood, so she posted it on Facebook, calling it “Flock Cancer” after her love of flamingos and—well, you’ll know if you say it aloud! She thought their “little walk” would attract 25 or 30 participants. But word spread, and on race day there were nearly 400. The event raised more than $25,000 for the YMCA Oncology Recovery Program in Boise. “We were astonished,” says Leslie. “My mother and I were able to take something we’d been observers of and become the ones giving this gift.”

early all the women in Paige’s dad’s family have had breast or ovarian cancer. And when Paige was 22, she tested positive for the BRCA1 mutation. Two years later, Paige underwent a preventative double mastectomy. After the surgery, she recalls a nurse warning her not to look down, but she did anyway. To her surprise, “I felt so good. I had been so afraid of my body. Now I was amazed by it. I thought, Other women should feel this.” She refocused her career, moving from TV journalism to advocacy, becoming an expert in mastectomies, aftercare, and life with a BRCA mutation. She built an Instagram account, @paige_previvor, documenting herself reveling in post-op body love: “I wanted to create the images and videos I wished were out there.” It blew up, and other “previvors” began connecting through her page. Wanting to bring that offline, she began planning meetups, and the nonprofit The Breasties (thebreasties.org) was born. Paige is one of three cofounders, and they host retreats and wellness activities for individuals with any stage of or impacted by breast or other reproductive cancer. Connecting people—regardless of where they are with their diagnoses— has turned out to be Paige’s calling. She recalls that at one retreat another cofounder overheard a participant saying on the phone, “You don’t get it, Mom. She’s upending the stigma of a breast cancer diagnosis. Jessica Zucker, Ph.D. fter experiencing a pregnancy loss, Jessica, a psychologist specializing in reproductive and maternal mental health, focused her #IHadAMiscarriage campaign on dismantling the silence, stigma, and shame surrounding miscarriage. Earlier this year, she joined another community bound by a common grief: those who had received a breast cancer diagnosis. “As I shared my news, I found that I was again facing silence, stigma, and shame,” she says. People offered well-meaning comments that ended up feeling hurtful, just as had happened after her miscarriage, saying things like “You can get the best boobs now. I’m jealous!” and “Do you think this happened because you’re so stressed?” She commissioned artist Ava Puckett to illustrate a graphic for @IHadAMiscarriage, her Instagram, about what not to say to someone with breast cancer (she’d shared a similar list about miscarriage before). The goal isn’t to shame, she explains, but to educate: When people learn to express empathy in hard situations, it ultimately helps us all.

ngela watched in awe as her older sister, Bernadette, maintained “grace, humor, and humility” through her breast cancer diagnosis. Two years later, Angela, an elementary school principal, found out she too was facing breast cancer: “Here I was—a former Miss America who loves my hair!—going through hair loss and chemo. It was brutal. Laughing was the only way I could keep from crying.” She started a journal for those laugh-don’t-cry moments, such as when a friend (who didn’t like driving at night) came to visit and suddenly needed to take Angela to the emergency room at 8 p.m. in a freak L.A. downpour. “I had to guide her through it—like, who is taking care of whom?! We were laughing the entire ride,” she says. Writing down those moments helped Angela keep her inherent optimism throughout her treatment, just as she’d seen her sister do. Now that she’s in remission, she’s celebrating survivors whenever she can: The school where she is principal will honor breast cancer survivors like her and her sister this month, wearing pink in support.

KNOW YOUR BREASTS Getting regular mammograms can reveal worrisome changes that could signal cancer. But there are red flags you can keep an eye out for between scans, says Susan Brown, R.N., senior director of health information and publications for Susan G. Komen. Besides a lump, signs of cancer can include thickening, swelling, or darkening of the breast; itchiness, rash, or a scaly sore around the nipple; puckering of the skin; inverting of the nipple or other changes in breast size or shape; and nipple discharge or breast pain.

LEARN YOUR FAMILY HISTORY Though about 85% of women who get breast cancer have no close relative who had it, if you do have it in your lineage, your risk is higher. It may be nearly doubled if you have a first-degree relative who had the disease, and up to 10% of breast cancers are the result of rare inherited mutations such as the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes, which increase risk by as much as 70% before age 70.

EAT WELL Load your plate with plenty of fruits and vegetables; minimize red meat consumption (study results are mixed, but some show that it may be associated with a greater risk of developing breast cancer and other cancers); eat more plant-based proteins like beans, lentils, nuts, and seeds; and enjoy fiber-filled whole grains, as fiber likely plays a role in reducing breast cancer risk, says Dawn Mussallem, D.O., a hematology and oncology breast health specialist and lifestyle medicine physician with the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, FL. And limit alcohol, as “the more you drink, the higher your risk,” Dr. Mussallem adds.

1 In medium saucepan, whisk together sugar, cocoa, cornstarch, and salt. Whisk in milk and egg yolks. Cook on medium, whisking, until just beginning to bubble and thicken, 5 to 7 min. 1 Heat oven to 500°F (if you can’t heat oven this high without broiling, heat it to 475°F) with racks in lower and upper thirds. On lightly floured surface, shape pizza dough into rectangle about the size of pan. 2 Pour oil into Detroitstyle pizza pan or 9- by 13-in. baking pan and press dough into bottom and ½ in. up sides of prepared pan. 3 Top with half of pepperoni. With large serrated knife, cut off top ⅓ of large pumpkin and hollow out. Then hollow out bottom part too and, on each side, cut a hole halfway down; push skeleton arms (we bought these from halloweenfxprops.com) through. Cut divots in bottom’s base to keep arms steady. For skull, trace plastic Halloween eyeballs on a small white pumpkin; hollow inside traced circles with melon baller, push eyeballs into holes, and then carve a mouth. Position stemless white pumpkin inside bottom section of big pumpkin for body; top with skull. Secure top and bottom sections of large orange pumpkin along back and sides with wood skewers. Arrange skeleton hands over top.

Make glue mixture: Continuously add 1 Tbsp cornstarch and 1 Tbsp water to ½ cup glue until it’s the consistency of heavy cream. Cover blown-up balloons in thin layer of petroleum jelly (to prevent sticking) and wrap yarn coated with mixture around them. Let fully dry, pop balloons, and add twig stems and paper leaves.
