Mix and be merry!

Stir chocolate spoons in coffee or warm milk or another beverage to add an extra hit of sweetness to the season. To prep the spoons, pour melted white, milk or dark chocolate in the spoons, then garnish with an assortment of sweet and salty fixin’s including things like mini chocolate chips, toasted coconut flakes, crushed candy canes and chopped espresso beans. Let stand for a few minutes until the chocolate has cooled and solidified. Wrap them in cellophane and tie with twine for a party favor or an easy gift!

Pomegranate

Hidden inside the skin of this festive fruit are juicy edible seeds called arils, rich in antioxidants and fiber. Here are our Test Kitchen’s favorite ways to eat them: SPICED PILAF Mix 1/4 cup pomegranate seeds, 1 shallot and 1 jalapeño (both chopped) and 1/2 cup each cilantro and mint (all chopped) with 1/3 cup oil, 11/2 tsp grated lemon zest plus 2 Tbsp lemon juice and 1/2 tsp each sumac and kosher salt. Fold into 1 cup long-grain white rice (cooked).

POM-LIME SPRITZ In small saucepan, simmer 3/4 cup each sugar and pomegranate juice until sugar has dissolved, 12 min. Remove from heat, stir in 1 tsp grated lime zest and 2 Tbsp lime juice; let cool. Top 1 Tbsp each syrup and lime juice with sparkling water or wine and add a few pomegranate seeds.

SQUASH & POM RELISH In medium bowl, whisk together 2 Tbsp olive oil, 2 tsp honey and 1/4 tsp kosher salt. Stir in 1/2 cup each pomegranate seeds and toasted pepitas and 2 Tbsp chopped parsley. Spoon over roasted butternut squash and sprinkle with crumbled feta.

We sat down with Ann Patchett, author of Pulitzer Prize finalist The Dutch House, to talk about our book of the month, her latest, These Precious Days

7,000 closed doors you pass on any given day. You talk about the one that opened. Why don’t you use social media? I’ve never participated in any form of social media. It’s gone from people telling me “You’re crazy” to “You’re like a prophet.” I don’t read online comments, and I try so hard to protect myself from the judgment that’s out there. Because the [bad comments], those are the ones that stick.

How do you decide what to write about? I have a sense of what topics have the ability to connect with different people. I’ll think, I really want to write about this, and sometimes it happens in the middle of living it. I do know, in my own life, what constitutes a bigger story. People may think, She’s so open; she’s so in touch with her “yes” moments. But my life is chock-full of “no.” I say no constantly. And it’s the yes that’s specific, and that’s always where the story is. It’s just like going through a door. You don’t talk about the

Why write about your own life? I wrote about my friend Sooki because I wanted to remember her, I wanted a record of our time together and I wanted to create a picture of life. I wanted to write this down before I started forgetting things. I wrote [about cleaning house] because it was a project I really wanted to do, and it became something to write about. How involved do you get in the cover design of your books and the business of publishing? As the co-owner of Parnassus Books in Nashville, I’m very interested in all aspects of the business of publishing. I’m a good businessperson, and I have a good sense of design. I know what I like on a cover, and I have a team that lets me be [involved] in all those areas. I like to say that they have a ton of books and I’ve only got one. So I’m going to be very involved in my one.

For as long as I can remember, my dad has given thanks before every meal. His brief prayer always includes appreciation for the food and usually lists a few recent rewarding experiences. After he says grace on a holiday, my dad often asks everyone at the table to look back on the year and share some of the things they’re grateful for. Turns out this age-old ritual of giving thanks, practiced in most cultures, is not just a wonderful bonding experience — it actually helps us manage our stress too. And at the end of this year, we could all use a little communal therapy. As we take stock during this uncertain time, it may feel like a stretch to celebrate. But history (as shown by accounts from survivors of concentration camps, natural disasters, personal loss — and pandemics) tells us that focusing on gratitude at our lowest points can help with recovery from trauma and foster emotional stamina and resilience. Clean the jar. Remove any labels and residue from the inside and the outside of the jar. Paint the lid with spray paint and let it dry.

Arrange a scene. On the inside of the jar, add bottle-brush trees, animal figurines and more. Form snowdrifts with air-dry clay and let dry. In a wellventilated area, glue down all elements with silicone glue.

Add sparkle! Spoon 1 to 2 tsp of glitter and/or fake snow into the jar. Fill the jar with distilled water almost to the top. Add a few drops of glycerin and stir.

Glue on the lid. Over a sink or tray, add more silicone glue around the top edge of the jar and put on the lid. Close the jar tightly and wipe away any excess water and glue. Let dry completely.

Start with a good haircut. Regular haircuts aren’t

dead ends—they can make your hair appear healthier, bouncier and thicker too. A great cut also provides the perfect base for executing any hairstyle you desire. Have flat hair that could use more life? “Try face-framing layers and short, soft layers all over to boost volume,” says Jenny Cho, celebrity hairstylist and R+Co Collective member in Los Angeles. For thick hair, if you prefer it medium to long, ask your stylist to cut layers into it to reduce density; for short cuts, request above-the-shoulder, as shoulder-length can look too boxy and chunky, says Edward Tricomi, master stylist and co-owner of Warren-Tricomi Salons.

Since different hair thicknesses and textures have varied needs, one formula doesn’t fit all. “If you have fine, straight hair, you may want more lightweight conditioner formulas like sprays, foams or gels, because heavy conditioners could weigh your hair down,” says Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab Chemist Danusia Wnek. On the other hand, if you have thick or curly hair that requires more moisture, you may want to opt for richer cream and balm formulas to intensely condition strands. “Selecting products specific to your hair type ensures that the formulators have kept those needs in mind when creating them,” she explains.

Customize your arsenal to address your texture and fit your hair type, but stock up on these fundamentals: a quality lightweight hairdryer, the right hairbrushes for your needs (see below) and hair ties and bobby pins that match the color of your strands, Tricomi recommends.

Rather than fight (or change) your natural hair texture, make the best of it. If you have waves or curls, look for styling products created for those hair types, says Michelle Sultan, creative director for Imbue Curls. Opt for formulas with both conditioning and shaping benefits, like styling creams, and avoid anything that might make hair feel dehydrated, such as alcohol or wax, she adds, as textured hair tends to be drier. Give straight strands a boost by misting a texturizing spray on damp or dry hair to bring out any bend and roughdrying it using your fingers.

Learn hairbrush basics. The number of brushes available in all sizes and shapes can be mind-boggling. For everyday grooming, choose a paddle brush, which has a flat shape to glide through hair with less snagging. For blowdrying, pick a round brush to easily grab many strands and align them for smoothness. (Steer clear of round brushes with metal frames; they can heat up when used with a blowdryer and burn hair or skin.) The kind of bristles a brush has is also important when it comes to styling specific types of hair:

Become styler-savvy. 3 There are many kinds of styling products, but universally, a little goes a long way. Start by applying a small amount and add more if needed. A cheat sheet to find the right formulations for your hair: • Hairsprays are liquids misted on damp strands to deliver benefits like thickening or on dry strands to texturize or set a style. • Hair mousses are thin liquids aerated into foam form that increase volume or help shape hair. • Hair gels are viscous liquids that dry quickly into a clear coating on hair. They’re best for enhancing texture on short hair, slicking strands down and defining curls. • Serums are medium-viscosity liquids that coat strands to help smooth and tame frizz. • Creams are thicker liquids that can smooth and soften strands and give light definition to damp or dry hair.

• For fine hair, a brush made of natural boar bristles is best, as it will smooth and enhance shine with less pulling and tugging. • For normal to thick hair, try a combination boar- and nylon-bristle brush to detangle, smooth and add sheen. • For very thick hair, a brush with nylon bristles is strong enough to help detangle stubborn knots.

Master curling like a pro. Using a curling iron to curl strands can help shape natural waves or spirals or create texture and fullness in straight hair. Here’s how: • ID the right barrel size. Curling irons with smaller barrels (like 3/4") produce tighter coils, while those with larger barrels (e.g., 2") make looser ones; for medium-size curls, choose 1" to 11/2". • Watch the heat. If your iron has heat settings, pick lower heat for fine hair and higher for thick hair. • Section + prep. Working in 1" sections, spray each with a lightweight heat-protectant hairspray to “define and maintain curls and enhance shine,” Cho recommends. • Wind the section of hair around the wand, leaving the ends out; hold for about five seconds, then release. Repeat on the rest of hair. • When curls are completely cool, gently finger-comb them for a natural-looking finish. Lightly mist hairspray all over to set if needed.

to the thickness of your hair. How you wear your hair ultimately depends on personal style, but it helps to pay attention to the density of your strands. For fine to medium hair, there are styling options: You can straighten or curl it and experiment with chignons, low buns and ponytails of various heights, but apply styling products lightly to avoid flatness. If you have thick hair, try a braid, a low ponytail or a high bun on days when straightening or curling is a chore and you want to put your hair up. The upside of a dense do? “A blowout can last longer,” says Renato Campora, artistic director at Fekkai in L.A. “And there’s less worry about overdoing it on products, because they won’t weigh down hair.”

9 Know the right way

to straighten hair.

When you want to smooth strands, don’t just grab the flat iron and go. Before you start, “always use a heat protectant,” Cho says, meaning apply a styling product like a spray or cream with heat-protective properties listed on the label to help prevent damage. If you have fine or damaged hair, set the temperature to 330°F or less; healthy and/or medium-thick hair, up to 370°F; and 390°F to 445°F for thick, coarse strands. And speed matters: “If you’re going too fast, hair won’t straighten,” Tricomi says. “Too slow, and hair can burn.” Working in small sections, clamp the iron at the roots and move gradually down to the tips; repeat as needed.

Play with primaries. After living in a home with a neutral kitchen, a fun-loving family turned to designer Karen Nepacena of Destination Eichler to breathe life into their new space. Nepacena settled on a mix of red, blue and yellow for the transformation. “Kerf Design’s vibrant cabinet finish colors really stood out,” Nepacena says. “We knew they were the perfect palette to work into the kitchen.” SEPTEMBER 2021 G H

Go lighter than you think. This kitchen features a single alley-facing window, so designer Anastasia Casey of The Identité Collective went two paint shades lighter than the desired finished look. “When we painted these cabinets outside in natural light, it felt like a bright spring green,” she says. “As soon as we installed them in the kitchen with limited natural lighting, they went much darker, like the moody green we’d hoped for.”

Opt for a reflective backsplash. Rather than view a dark bar area as a challenge, designer Paloma Contreras embraced it, pairing cabinets painted in Benjamin Moore’s Hale Navy with an antique mirror backsplash from Ann Sacks. “It enlarges the space and infuses it with a sense of glamour,” she says.


Add lights opposite a window.

BRIGHT IDEA The GH Institute’s home improvement experts, Rachel Rothman and Dan DiClerico, share how to choose the best bulb for every space.

To make jewel tones pop and give interiors a lighter feel, illuminate the room evenly by placing lamps away from sources of natural light. “If it’s a table or floor lamp, consider where the switch is and be sure it can be reached easily,” says designer Emily June Spanos. “Then put task lighting in areas where you need additional brightness.”

PICK A buLb type before SHOPPING. Compact fluorescent bulbs cost less up front, but LEDs are more cost-effective in the long run. BE AWARE OF THE LUMEN COUNT. Brightness is measured in lumens, so pay attention to this instead of wattage to get the light you desire. For the equivalent of a 60-watt bulb, look for at least 800 lumens.

CHOOSE YOUR COLOR. Color temperature is a way to describe the appearance of the light provided by a bulb, measured in degrees Kelvin, which ranges from warm white (2600K to 3200K) to bright white (3200K to 4500K) to daylight (4500K to 6500K). Reading nooks need cooler, higher temps; workspaces call for bright white; and soft white works well for lounging areas. USE SMART LIGHTING TO MAKE ARTIFICIAL fixtures MORE NATURAL. Human-centric lighting (HCL), which mimics the sun’s movement, can improve your overall health. Creating HCL is as simple as screwing a color-changing smart bulb into a fixture. Then download the app listed on the packaging, sync up the bulb and set the HCL schedule, or “scene.” You can even add more bulbs into the scene or install a smart light switch, then program all of a room’s fixtures to work at once.

The variation in shades of blue in this attic bedroom isn’t due to light and shadow — designer Rachael Grochowski of RHG Architecture + Design planned it that way. “The different blues allow the space to read like a faceted jewel,” she says. “Light bounces off of light and dark surfaces differently, and that allows the space to feel brighter and more spacious.”

Fresh white walls serve as the perfect backdrop for a vibrant piece of vintage art in this bedroom by designer Karen Nepacena. “It adds bright color to the room, and because it was such a loveat-first-sight moment when selecting the piece, it brings the homeowners a lot of happiness,” she says.


This playful pool bathroom, designed by Caron Woolsey, features a graphic coated wallpaper that “aids in the light’s reflectiveness, brightening the space overall,” she says. The gallery wall adds to the uplifting vibe: “It was important to choose artwork in keeping with the aesthetic of the room, but in a different medium than the wallpaper so as not to confuse the eye when entering the space.”

Six Hispanic and Latinx women share the traditions that make the holidays feel like home by IRINA GONZALEZ Like many expat families living in the U.S., my Cuban family relishes our traditions. We may no longer live in the places where we were born or where our families come from, but the holidays are the perfect time to showcase our culture. Noche Buena (Christmas Eve) is an especially important time for us. My mother and I prepare the turkey according to my abuelita’s instructions, by stuffing minced garlic under the skin and pouring naranja agria (a bitter

orange marinade) all over it. Meanwhile, my brother and cousin work diligently to make everyone’s favorite arroz congri (black beans and rice cooked in black bean water). Finally, after hours of cooking, we’ll gather around the table late into the evening, eat our mix of Cuban and American dishes and count the minutes until we get to open presents at midnight. Recently, I spoke to six inspiring Latinas about their own holiday traditions. Here are the foods and drinks that always grace their tables this season.

“I’m of Colombian, Argentine and Jewish descent. For my family, the holidays really start with Rosh Hashanah, which is the Jewish New Year. Food is a huge part of this holiday, and there’s a lot of symbolic food. For Rosh Hashanah, there are a lot of foods that represent a sweet new year. Chicken with dried fruits; apples and challah bread that we dip in honey. For Hanukkah it’s traditional to eat things fried in oil, so I’ll always have latkes, or potato pancakes. “For Christmas, [mom María’s] favorite is cooking the tamales. All the women in our family come together to create them. We all go to my mom’s house, and she cooks, sometimes three turkeys. My mom makes the molé sauce. My brothers carve the turkey. We all have rice, and sometimes mashed potatoes, with the turkey. It’s like a mix of the American culture and my mom’s heritage on that day. And on New Year’s, right at 12 o’clock, we stand at the door with coins and throw them behind us. Our parents taught this tradition to all nine kids, with the coins representing prosperity in the new year. Once we throw them behind us at midnight, it means we will expect a bountiful harvest for that year.”

And I do it now, with my daughters, every Friday. I feel that it’s really grounding and a really big tradition for us. But my favorite holiday has to be during Passover. We have all of these symbolic foods at the table that signify our history, like the chicken matzah ball soup and brisket. I sometimes change up the way I prepare the brisket, but the matzah balls are tradition — just the way my mom makes them! We take turns reading from the Haggadah, the prayer book, during the Seder. I just love that moment.”

“I grew up in a really large family, and my grandfather used to dress up as Santa Claus. As soon as I figured out that Santa Claus was my grandfather, I would go earlier in the night and get dressed up in his costume. It would be huge on me, but I made it work. Then I would take candy and toys and give them to the kids who lived in the streets of Brazil. Now my kids save up money throughout the year and then, before Christmas, we buy things for those in need in Brazil, in Africa and here in the United States. That’s our version of what my grandfather did for our family, being able to do that for others, and trying to instill that in my kids today.”

From the moment I was born, I knew we would have something special. The photos of us from my early years show a connection most people have only after knowing and loving each other for years. Throughout my life, your support and guidance have made me feel confident and secure in a way that’s allowed me to take risks and enjoy life in a way very few have the chance to experience. Throughout your life and your multiple successful careers, you have created a strong safety net for our entire family. This is one of the best gifts you could have given any of us. It has allowed us to go out in the world and venture down our respective paths knowing that you would always be there to support us or pick us up and dust us off if it didn’t go our way. That is one part of our life together that I wish the public got to see: the pure joy you get when the whole family comes together and shares life experiences and stories that have been made possible by your hard work and dedication. Some of my most cherished memories are of when my parents would bring my siblings and me to the lake house to be with all the other cousins, aunts and uncles for a weekend. When the snow piled up in the winter, we would create a makeshift bunny hill in the backyard and ride down on saucers. The home videos of everyone laughing, all bundled up, just spending time together, show just how precious family is. You’ve always told me, “If you set the table, they will come.” You have set the family table for decades, and we all continue to gather there.

Family is so important, and I have seen firsthand how amazing it can be when there is a strong matriarch leading the way. You saw qualities in me that I eventually discovered but might not have without your nurturing and constant direction. You have had a significant impact on many young ladies’ lives, as evidenced by the fans who come up to you to share that you’re their inspiration for success. You taught me that the way to build confidence is to be independent and do work in your life that is meaningful and impactful. I have taken that message to heart just as countless others have, and it has served me well. I love you more and more each day and cannot wait for the future lessons we’ll get to share. In February 2013, winter storm Nemo settled over Boston, and it was a bad one, even by New England standards. Roads were closed, public transportation lurched to a stop for a day or two and classes in my last semester of senior year of college were canceled. Students stumbled out into the blustery and empty streets, heading toward the standby strip of bars, lobbing snowballs and sledding down Mission Hill as strong winds whipped the whiteness around. It was a joyous, beer-soaked snow globe — one I trudged right past on my way to the gym. The next day, I was praised by my hungover friends: “I wish I had your willpower!”; “Ugh, you’re so good!”; and other tropes we repeat nearly reflexively when a person does something that we think is healthy or shows superior discipline. And I did stuff like that all the time: I made measured and calorically scarce meals at home instead of dining out with friends, I opted out of drinking to save the “empty” calories, I tracked the nutritional content of my food—all of which continued to net me a thin body and a slew of compliments.

well-being. I withdrew from loved ones to avoid eating in public and developed a bad temper and a poor attention span from sustained hunger. My body also paid the price — I lost my period, found myself easily exhausted and had cholesterol issues, among other problems twentysomethings aren’t supposed to face. The diagnoses hit like a nor’easter, impacting not only me but nearly everyone in my periphery who’d lionized my dedication to being “fit and healthy.” It was so baffling. Even my doctors had praised me for my thin body, including an ob/gyn who, some months after my period stopped, eyeballed both me and my chart a couple of times before saying, “I know you probably worked really hard to lose weight, so I won’t ask you to put it back on.” And hadn’t I merely been living and eating the way our saved posts and Pins and favorite magazines suggested was ideal? Weren’t we supposed to celebrate fitness, healthy choices and the weight loss that (we hoped) came with them? Didn’t the “after” images in all those ads and reality TV shows make it clear that thinness was the outward marker of success that came with a healthy lifestyle change? How had all this made me sick — put me at risk of death, even? Yet it had. Eating disorders have the second-highest mortality rate of any mental health disorder. Although I — and others — had normalized and even admired my symptoms,

THE PICTURE of dISCIPLINE

This sustained “healthy” behavior is also part of what landed me in treatment some 15 months later, diagnosed with a tangle of eating disorders, including one called orthorexia, which is an unhealthy focus on eating “healthily.” What might have started as me trying to eat for “wellness” had become obsessive and threatening to my actual wellness. Controlling my food was my main priority, despite the fact that it was a detriment to my emotional and physical DECEMBER 2021 G H

the way I lived was life-threatening. And what made these formal diagnoses so scary and confusing was, in part, that they called into question a foundational yet hazardous pillar of our society: diet and wellness culture, which wrongly conflates health with weight. It also equates the behaviors that lead to thinness with “taking care of ourselves,” even when these behaviors lead to measurable harm. Realizing that many of the things I did because I thought they were good for me were in fact symptoms of orthorexia set off ripples of introspection — and a whole lot of relearning — about what true health looked like.

“Orthorexia nervosa is a condition characterized by exaggerated, obsessive, pathological fixation on healthy food, eating healthy — or, rather, health-conscious eating,” says Rebecca Rialon Berry, Ph.D., a clinical associate professor at NYU Langone Health. What it looks like from the outside is an “obsession with clean eating, healthy eating [or] pure eating that is becoming more and more prevalent” in society, says Claire Mysko, former CEO of the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA). And like more widely recognized eating disorders, it can have dire consequences. “Orthorexia is known to contribute to a number

NOTJUST FOR TEENS They affect a surprising number of women in midlife.

Women face pressure to look ever younger and thinner and experience major hormonal shifts in middle age, which may contribute to eating disorders (ED). The Renfrew Center, a nationwide network of treatment clinics, reports a jump in women in their 30s through 60s seeking treatment in the past few years. The seeds are often planted earlier in life—data suggests that just 5% to 10% of people who develop an ED do so for the first time as adults. “A portion had it in adolescence, recovered or partially recovered, then relapsed,” says Cynthia M. Bulik, Ph.D., founding director at the UNC Center of Excellence for Eating Disorders in Chapel Hill, NC. Some, she says, had symptoms such as chronic dieting that later blossomed into a disorder. “Many older patients started with restricting anorexia, but shifted to bulimia or binge eating,” adds Margo Maine, Ph.D., an author of The Body Myth: Adult Women and the Pressure to Be Perfect. The most frequent ED in adults is “otherwise specified feeding and eating disorder,” a mix of anorexia and bulimia symptoms, Maine says. But treatment absolutely is available. Along with therapy and medication, experts recommend that women seek a program with people of similar age, or one that involves partners and family, so those people can support their recovery. “Eating disorders affect the whole family system,” Maine says. — Beth Howard

of negative mental health and medical complications, including malnutrition and nutritional deficits,” says Berry. Anemia, osteoporosis, hormonal imbalances and an abnormally slow heart rate are just a few of the possible physical effects. Orthorexia, says Veronica E. Garnett, M.S., R.D., C.C., a Health at Every Size (HAES) registered dietitian, has “a very real impact on emotional, mental and physical health.”

“GOOD” FOOD, “BAD” FOOD

Orthorexia is particularly tricky, as “there is no one perfect definition of health, and there is no perfect definition of what makes a food healthy or not,” Garnett says. Some people fixate on nutrients in food, others on the way it is produced, and still others on the inclusion of certain ingredients believed to be healthful or the absence of others thought to be harmful. With so many perceived food hazards, the quest for “health” can be paralyzing, leaving a vulnerable person constantly questioning their decisions and consuming a rigidly narrow set of “approved” foods or even abstaining from eating altogether. Of course, introducing more vegetables into your diet is not inherently problematic, and neither is adopting any number of theoretically healthful habits, such as exercising at the same time each day, cooking more at home or looking up a menu online before you head out to a restaurant. But when these choices begin to dictate your daily life and determine your self-worth — for example, if you skip out on plans with friends so you can exercise, because you feel like a failure if you miss a workout — that’s when it can become a serious issue.

A DISORDERED SOCIETY

The causes of orthorexia have not been established, says Berry, though people with certain personality traits seem to be more prone to it. “Obsessive-compulsive tendencies and prior or current eating disorders are known risk factors,” says Berry. “Others include perfectionism, high anxiety or a need for control.” Garnett agrees, adding that a history of trauma, anxiety, depression and substance abuse may also contribute. (I check a lot of these boxes.)

But make no mistake: Orthorexia is also a societal disease, the biggest cause of which is diet culture, which sends an almost inescapable message that thinness is inherently good and that being in a small body and wellness are the same thing. They are not. And diet culture can be sneaky: Many “wellness” plans don’t overtly mention weight, but that’s the subtext. “People will say, ‘It’s not a diet; it’s a lifestyle change. It’s first about my health. It’s part of my wellness plan,’” says Judith Matz, L.C.S.W., coauthor with Christy Harrison, M.P.H., R.D., C.D.N., of The Making Peace With Food Card Deck. “These are code words. Any time a person manipulates their food for the purpose of weight loss, it is a diet, and it is subject to the same pitfalls,” says Matz. This message is subtle, unless you know to look for it. “The images of people who are held up as the picture of so-called wellness, they’re always thin,” says Harrison, who wrote Anti-Diet and hosts the podcast Food Psych. That said, not everyone with orthorexia is consciously concerned with their weight (though I was). “Restriction per se is not the intention of the individual with orthorexia,” Berry says. Rather, it’s about controlling what is eaten in an

attempt to consume only foods deemed healthy. “For people with orthorexia, the pursuit of a ‘perfect’ diet takes up a significant amount of time and energy and interferes with work, school and relationships,” says Berry. One major red flag is if you feel emotionally unhinged or distressed around food. A few tendencies to pay attention to, according to NEDA: You’re a major labelchecker and are very worried about the effects of certain ingredients on your health; you cut out entire categories of food (carbs, say, or cooked food, or anything with sugar); you’re so focused on “clean” eating that there aren’t many foods that work for you; you’re really upset when there’s nothing on the menu or at an event that fits into your definition of “healthy”; you’re keenly interested in what other people are eating or you follow lots of eating/healthy lifestyle accounts on social media. None of these on its own constitutes a disorder — the point, says Garnett, is how much time and emotional energy such preoccupations take up.

CLIMBING OUT OF THE RABBIT HOLE

I was orthorexic for years before I realized I really needed help. Then one night a switch flipped: I was sitting on my couch snacking on baby carrots. As my thumbs were poised to record the input into my calorie-tracking app, I stopped and thought, Wait. Why are you doing this? You’ve reached your goal weight. And I had! Yet I was more self-conscious and unhappy with my body than ever. I tried to put my phone down but became overwhelmed with panic and dissolved into tears. Then I frantically reopened the app to add the handful of calories from the carrots. In that moment, I saw how I was incapable of not keeping track of every little bit of food or exercise. That minute of clarity gave me the self-awareness to see my “healthy” behavior for what it truly was: toxic. My obsession with control had, ironically, spun out of control. And I knew I wasn’t equipped to fix it alone. Still, finding the help I needed was hard. Multiple therapists had months-long waiting lists. My doctor’s office also said they couldn’t fit me in and suggested that I call a crisis help line before retracting that suggestion. I was terrified that I might actually die before I could get help.

Eventually, my dejection metamorphosed into rage on behalf of myself and the other people who had been similarly failed. I Googled “eating disorder recovery near me” and called the closest program to book an evaluation. I still wasn’t entirely convinced that what I had was an eating disorder, but my concerns hadn’t yet been addressed by any health care professional. The next week I was seen in-office, and days later I was admitted into partial hospitalization for treatment. During my treatment, I learned that orthorexia can be addressed similarly to the way other eating disorders are, with nutrition therapy and treatment models like Health at Every Size and intuitive eating, a way of relearning to eat according to what the body and mind need to feel good. After months of targeted care and years in sustained therapy, I continue to relearn how to honor my hunger cues and treat my body and mind with compassion and softness instead of judgment and rigidity. That said, recovery is an active, constant practice; the eating-disorder monster will always lurk. This is why we say “recovering,” not “recovered.” Staying vigilant and being honest

with myself and my support system are things I have to choose again and again to prevent a relapse. “The healing journey does not have to be, and should not be, done alone,” says Garnett. Indeed, I've found that sharing my experiences leaves less room for the secrecy in which eating disorders thrive. And when I catch old, restrictive habits and thoughts creeping in, I remind myself that eating is about nutrition and pleasure and sociability, not some ever-changing definition of “health” or what my body happens to look like when it is properly nourished. I hope we all come to realize that this kinder, more holistic approach is a much more solid foundation for real health and wellness. 3. Meanwhile, to food processor, add mushrooms and pulse to finely chop. Increase heat under skillet to medium, add mushrooms to shallots and cook, stirring occasionally, until mushrooms have released their liquid, about 5 min. Continue cooking, stirring often, until mushrooms have browned, 12 to 15 min. more. 4. Stir in garlic and thyme and cook 2 min. Stir in sherry and cook until nearly dry, 15 sec. Transfer to plate. 5. Put 3 sheets of plastic wrap, overlapping, on work surface. Place prosciutto on top, overlapping to make roughly a 12- by 7-in. rectangle. Spread mushroom mixture evenly over prosciutto.

Sometimes people just can’t resist giving their furry friends a little something extra when the humans are making merry. Byers advises low-sugar and low-fat or fat-free options like baby carrots, unsalted popcorn, cucumber, apple slices, plain Cheerios, broccoli and green peas. A few pieces of their regular food will work too. When in doubt, check in with your vet about the best treats to keep your pet happy and healthy.

Many common holiday ingredients can hurt Fido or Fluffy. Dairy, nuts and chocolate can cause gastrointestinal upset or acute pancreatitis, explains Christopher G. Byers, D.V.M., and grapes, raisins and currants can cause kidney problems. Onions and garlic can damage pets’ red blood cells, and xylitol (a sugar substitute) can lead to hypoglycemia and liver damage. Yeast can expand in your pet’s belly and cause gastrointestinal obstructions. While most owners know not to offer cooked bones, even raw bones can splinter and cause gastrointestinal lacerations or obstructions as well as choking. And since your pet shouldn’t have caffeine or alcohol, they’ll have to skip the New Year’s Eve toast.

Avoid toxic treats.

Even if a food is technically safe to share with your pet, animals are just not meant to eat human food. Also, pets are so much smaller than we are that a few extra bites here and there can pack on pounds quickly. Extra weight can put stress on their bodies and even shorten their life spans. Treats should make up no more than 20% of your pet’s daily intake, so if you do give them a little something during the holidays, adjust their normal meals accordingly. Ask your vet how much they should eat if you’re not sure.
