our clothes can act like a huge cup of coffee for your energy or like a tranquilizer—a long-held belief I temporarily cast aside during the first weeks of the coronavirus lockdown when I became a walking meme about daytime and nighttime PJ’s and elastic waistbands. The first day I blowdried my hair and put on real clothes and a little makeup, I instantly felt more motivated, normal, calm, and happy than I had in a while. It sent the message to my subconscious that it was time to work and that I could in fact homeschool and make a magazine and finish a book and record a podcast…and better manage my stress, or at least want to keep trying. What we wear really can influence how we feel and behave, according to research. It’s called “enclothed cognition,” and studies show that wearing certain outfits may help us focus and feel more confident and upbeat. The key: What constitutes what I like to call “dopamine dressing” or “power clothes” seems to depend mostly on you and whether you associate the items with joy, power, or something else. So when you’re getting dressed this holiday season, use your associations and choose clothes that give off a vibe you want to feel— and there’s a good chance they’ll help you get there. Down in the dumps? Need a confidence boost? Put on your version of this pink lightning bolt dress my friend designer Amanda Perna sewed for me and spread some holiday cheer. FAUX FUR: MIKE GARTEN.

We asked Carolyn Forté, the Good Housekeeping Institute’s queen of clean, to share her best tips for caring for fluffy finds in honor of Faux Fur Friday.

Follow the care label

Remove stains

Store smartly

If the item is machine-washable, add an extra rinse cycle and skip fabric softener. If it’s also machine-dryable, stop the cycle regularly to fluff.

Blot spills promptly. If they can't be wiped away, spot-clean with a soapy mix of mild dish liquid and water. Rinse and let air-dry away from heat, shaking and fluffing the item as it dries.

When they aren’t in use, loosely fold or roll clean fake-fur throws and place in an enclosed fabric storage bag or bin. Tuck it into a cool, dry closet.

HOLIDAY CENTERPIECE This gorgeous card (yes, it arrives flat in an envelope!) doubles as a delightful piece of holiday decor when unfolded.

“I swear by the restaurant suggestions from this food and travel app, which are submitted by approved recommenders. I love how the app offers insight into the history or cultural significance of many regional dishes.” —Andra Chantim, deputy editor

DUOLINGO

“Learning Italian has been a lifelong goal, but I don’t have time for a labor-intensive course. This app is the chef’s kiss of language learning—I can do as little as five minutes a day and still feel as if I’ve learned a few new words or sentences.” —Alyssa Jung, senior health editor

“Using this app, I can turn cellphone shots into framed photos that feel special. I upload an image and choose a handmade frame, and they mail the final product to me. I’ve even given a few as gifts!” —Isabel Abdai, design director

PACER

“This app tracks how many miles I walk a day, gives me daily walking goals, and lets me know if I hit them. It’s especially great for people like me who don’t have a smart watch.”

Bicarbonate of Soda Day (you know, baking soda!) is coming up. Here are two hacks for the do-it-all compound:

Scrub stubborn stains

MUMBAI MODERN by Amisha Dodhia Gurbani This book of vegetarian recipes, inspired by Indian and Californian cuisines, includes innovative dishes like Strawberry and Hibiscus Morning Buns and Breakfast Naan Pizza.

To clean baked-on grease from a pan, mix 1/4 cup of dish detergent (powder or liquid) with 1/4 cup of baking soda. Spread the mixture on the bottom of the pan, fill it with hot water, and let it soak overnight. In the morning, the grime will slide off like magic.

Deodorize upholstery

Banish bad smells by sprinkling baking soda on the surfaces of cushy spots around your house. Let it sit for 15 minutes, then vacuum it up. You can also use this method to freshen up your mattress and de-stink pet beds.

For certain adults with newly diagnosed metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) that tests positive for PD-L1

= A CHANCE FOR MORE BIG HORIZONS A Chance to Live Longer™ THE ONLY FDA-APPROVED CHEMO-FREE COMBINATION OF 2 IMMUNOTHERAPIES THAT WORKS DIFFERENTLY In a study of newly diagnosed advanced NSCLC patients, half of those on OPDIVO + YERVOY were alive at 17.1 months versus 14.9 months on platinum-based chemotherapy. Thank you to all the patients, nurses, and physicians in our clinical trials.

Results may vary. OPDIVO® + YERVOY® is not approved for patients younger than 18 years of age.

Indication & Important Safety Information for OPDIVO (nivolumab) + YERVOY (ipilimumab) Only your healthcare professional knows the specifics of your condition and how OPDIVO in combination with YERVOY may fit into your overall therapy. The information below does not take the place of talking with your healthcare professional, so talk to them if you have any questions. What are OPDIVO and YERVOY? OPDIVO and YERVOY are prescription medicines used to treat people with a type of advanced stage lung cancer called non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). OPDIVO may be used in combination with YERVOY as your first treatment for NSCLC when your lung cancer has spread to other parts of your body (metastatic) and your tumors are positive for PD-L1, but do not have an abnormal EGFR or ALK gene. It is not known if OPDIVO and YERVOY are safe and effective when used in children younger than 18 years of age. What is the most important information I should know about OPDIVO and YERVOY? OPDIVO and YERVOY are medicines that may treat certain cancers by working with your immune system. OPDIVO and YERVOY can cause your immune system to attack normal organs and tissues in any area of your body and can affect the way they work. These problems can sometimes become serious or life-threatening and can lead to death and may happen anytime during treatment or even after your treatment has ended. You may have more than one of these problems at the same time. Some of these problems may happen more often when OPDIVO is used in combination with YERVOY. Call or see your healthcare provider right away if you develop any new or worse signs or symptoms, including • Lung problems: new or worsening cough; shortness of breath; chest pain • Intestinal problems: diarrhea (loose stools) or more frequent bowel movements than usual; stools that are black, tarry, sticky, or have blood or mucus; severe stomach-area (abdominal) pain or tenderness • Liver problems: yellowing of your skin or the whites of your eyes; severe nausea or vomiting; pain on the right side of your stomach area (abdomen); dark urine (tea colored); bleeding or bruising more easily than normal

• Hormone gland problems: headaches that will not go away or unusual headaches; eye sensitivity to light; eye problems; rapid heartbeat; increased sweating; extreme tiredness; weight gain or weight loss; feeling more hungry or thirsty than usual; urinating more often than usual; hair loss; feeling cold; constipation; your voice gets deeper; dizziness or fainting; changes in mood or behavior, such as decreased sex drive, irritability, or forgetfulness • Kidney problems: decrease in the amount of urine; blood in your urine; swelling in your ankles; loss of appetite • Skin problems: rash; itching; skin blistering or peeling; painful sores or ulcers in mouth or nose, throat, or genital area • Eye problems: blurry vision, double vision, or other vision problems; eye pain or redness Problems can also happen in other organs and tissues. These are not all of the signs and symptoms of immune system problems that can happen with OPDIVO and YERVOY. Call or see your healthcare provider right away for any new or worsening signs or symptoms, which may include: • Chest pain; irregular heartbeat; shortness of breath; swelling of ankles • Confusion; sleepiness; memory problems; changes in mood or behavior; stiff neck; balance problems; tingling or numbness of the arms or legs • Double vision; blurry vision; sensitivity to light; eye pain; changes in eye sight • Persistent or severe muscle pain or weakness; muscle cramps • Low red blood cells; bruising Getting medical help right away may help keep these problems from becoming more serious. Your healthcare team will check you for these problems during treatment and may treat you with corticosteroid or hormone replacement medicines. Your healthcare team may also need to delay or completely stop your treatment if you have severe side effects. What should I tell my healthcare provider before receiving OPDIVO and YERVOY? Before you receive OPDIVO and YERVOY, tell your healthcare provider about all of your medical conditions, including if you: • have immune system problems such as Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, or lupus • have received an organ transplant

Talk to your doctor about OPDIVO + YERVOY www.OPDIVOYERVOY.com 1-855-OPDIVOYERVOY • have received or plan to receive a stem cell transplant that uses donor stem cells (allogeneic) • have received radiation treatment to your chest area in the past and have received other medicines that are like OPDIVO • have a condition that affects your nervous system, such as myasthenia gravis or Guillain-Barré syndrome • are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. OPDIVO and YERVOY can harm your unborn baby • are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. It is not known if OPDIVO or YERVOY passes into your breast milk. Do not breastfeed during treatment with OPDIVO or YERVOY and for 5 months after the last dose of OPDIVO or YERVOY Females who are able to become pregnant: Your healthcare provider should do a pregnancy test before you start receiving OPDIVO or YERVOY. • You should use an effective method of birth control during your treatment and for at least 5 months after your last dose of OPDIVO or YERVOY. Talk to your healthcare provider about birth control methods that you can use during this time. • Tell your healthcare provider right away if you become pregnant or think you are pregnant during treatment with OPDIVO or YERVOY. You or your healthcare provider should contact Bristol Myers Squibb at 1-844-593-7869 as soon as you become aware of the pregnancy. Tell your healthcare provider about all the medicines you take, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Know the medicines you take. Keep a list of them to show your healthcare providers and pharmacist when you get a new medicine. What are the possible side effects of OPDIVO and YERVOY? OPDIVO and YERVOY can cause serious side effects, including: • See “What is the most important information I should know about OPDIVO + YERVOY?” • Severe infusion reactions. Tell your healthcare team or nurse right away if you get these symptoms during an infusion of OPDIVO or YERVOY: chills or shaking; itching or rash; flushing; shortness of breath or wheezing; dizziness; feel like passing out; fever; back or neck pain

• Complications, including graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), of bone marrow (stem cell) transplant that uses donor stem cells (allogeneic). These complications can be severe and can lead to death. These complications may happen if you underwent transplantation either before or after being treated with OPDIVO or YERVOY. Your healthcare provider will monitor you for these complications. The most common side effects of OPDIVO when used in combination with YERVOY include: feeling tired; diarrhea; rash; itching; nausea; pain in muscles, bones, and joints; fever; cough; decreased appetite; vomiting; stomach-area (abdominal) pain; shortness of breath; upper respiratory tract infection; headache; low thyroid hormone levels (hypothyroidism); decreased weight; and dizziness. These are not all the possible side effects of OPDIVO and YERVOY. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You are encouraged to report side effects of prescription drugs to the FDA. Call 1-800-FDA-1088. OPDIVO (10 mg/mL) and YERVOY (5 mg/mL) are injections for intravenous (IV) use. This is a brief summary of the most important information about OPDIVO and YERVOY. For more information, talk with your healthcare providers, call 1-855-673-4861, or go to www.OPDIVO.com.

his middle school teacher often celebrates her birthday with a themed party. “Last year it was African safari,” Lo says. “I go big on decor because I love arts and crafts.” Creativity has always been a part of the educator’s DNA, giving her a killer eye for scoring unique thrift store pieces. Thrifting may have started as a hobby for her, but it has blossomed into a popular blog and online thrift store called Shop True Lo Style that reflects her newfound confidence: “As I got older, I stopped following the trends. I learned it doesn’t matter what people think of you, and I just wear whatever makes me happy.” Her eclectic style has even inspired her students: “One of them carries a cow-print purse because of me. I love that I’m encouraging them to express themselves.”

beauty boost

“When I have the chance to get my hair and nails done, it’s a perfect day.”

Her beauty must-haves

“Some sunscreens leave a white, ashy cast on my skin. However, this one perfectly blends into my brown skin tone and gives it a moisturized sheen.”

Her mood booster

Treating people right, smiling at people, having positive interactions— these are all things that feed my spirit.

Life lessons

Take the time to find out what you enjoy and actually do it! Go for a walk. Have a beach day. Unplug from your devices. For me, the pandemic was a blessing in disguise—it helped me learn how to check in with myself.

HOW I STAY ACTIVE

I’m not big on the gym, so roller-skating is my way of getting exercise. I can do it anywhere, and it’s always fun. STYLE INSPIRATION

My dad loves dressing up, and he isn’t afraid of color. When I was growing up, my mom supported me and never questioned my choices, like when I’d wear a different color of shoe on each foot!

Future forward

I want to learn how to sew. If I could eventually turn my design ideas into real clothes for myself and that people wanted to buy, that would be exciting.

Before you can bring the merry, you must be the merry.

W

hen I was growing up, it felt as if Christmas would never come. The silver lining in all that waiting was an Advent calendar. Every day I opened a door on it to find a tiny piece of chocolate. Chocolate can make even waiting better. As adults, how can we activate the childlike anticipation, the joy, and the merriment of Christmas? Well, before you can bring the merry, you must be the merry—filled with joy. In all the frenzy of the season, we can be the merry to others. Exude gratitude to the harried store clerk. Graciously yield to another car in holiday traffic. Linger with a friend over a festive cup of something hot. Also, don’t forget Jesus at Christmas. I love Christmas season and Advent because I love Jesus. The idea of forgetting this important part of Christmas might sound silly, but it’s easy to do. Our world is loud and demanding and rarely applauds silence, solitude, or reflection, yet we all need them desperately.

ST EP I N TO A STOR Y BOOK LEAVENWORTH, WA

This Bavarian-style village nestled in the Cascade Mountains feels straight out of a fairy tale, and you can choose your own adventure. Pick from an array of winter fun (snow tubing, sledding, snowshoeing, you name it), ride through the woods in a one-horse open sleigh, or check out one of the world’s largest collections of nutcrackers (over 7,000!) at the Leavenworth Nutcracker Museum. This city shines bright during the holidays, and not just because of the illuminated 81-foot-tall steel star that overlooks it from atop a mountain. Silver Dollar City, an 1880s-style theme park, covers everything from top to bottom with nearly 7 million lights and hosts nightly light parades and Broadway-style holiday musicals. As its name suggests, this is where holiday magic happens. There, you can pet and feed reindeer, snap a selfie with the largest Santa statue in North America, and snag every kind of decoration imaginable. These stories embody the true purpose of the holidays: helping others’ lives be a little more merry and bright She honors fallen members of the military.

Mona Gunn VIRGINIA BEACH, VA

n a brisk December day in 2014, Mona, 70, watched tearfully as trucks of fresh evergreen wreaths rolled into Arlington National Cemetery. It looked like a parade, but National Wreaths Across America Day has a somber purpose there: the placement of wreaths on the graves of about 260,000 military dead buried in Arlington—including Mona’s son Cherone, who was 22 when he died. After Cherone’s death in the October 2000 bombing of the USS Cole, Mona struggled to find meaningful ways to honor him. Volunteering with Wreaths Across America, which honors veterans at Christmastime with commemorative wreaths at more than 1.7 million graves in cemeteries nationwide, has become her can’t-miss tradition. At Arlington, Mona placed a wreath in front of Cherone’s headstone after saying his name. She did the same for the sailors buried on each side of him, who also died on the USS Cole, and texted photos of their headstones to their families. A past national president of American Gold Star Mothers, Mona has come to Arlington for Wreaths Across America nearly every year for almost a decade. She’s awed by the volunteers who show up regardless of the weather. “Christmastime is the time of year when we think about others and share our love with others,” she says, “and there is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” To participate in Wreaths Across America Day, go to wreathsacrossamerica.org.

F I N D I N G J OY KINDNESS SE ASON Left, cards with messages like I hope you can feel in your heart how important you are, distributed through Erin, below.

They donated 200 dinners. James, Seth, and Adam Quigley riving through Salt Lake City on Christmas morning in 2019, James, 40, and his son Seth, 16, saw homeless people, a familiar sight in most cities and to them. However, on this day the family was ready to help in a major way. James parked at the Rescue Mission of Salt Lake and asked a worker inside, “What are you serving for Christmas dinner?” The answer: “Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.” “Would it be OK if we donated some dinners?” James asked. The Quigleys headed to a nearby Denny’s and ordered 200 dinners on the spot, 150 turkey and 50 ham. James, with Seth and his other son, Adam, 13, delivered them to the mission at around 7 p.m. that night. Shelter residents gratefully grabbed the meals. There were even a few extras to hand out to homeless people on the streets. James says he and his boys try to make that kind of service a part of their lives year-round: “My wife [who passed away in 2019] always used to say, ‘If you want to see the world change, be the change.’”

bout 10,000 holiday cards will drift like snow through Erin’s house this winter, yet their seasonal greetings aren’t meant for her. As the founder of the Christmas Card Collective, Erin, 49, distributes them to homeless people. “Christmas is a feeling in your heart,” she says. “And I want that feeling transferred onto a card so it can touch someone else’s heart.” Back when Erin ran a pop-up soup kitchen for the homeless, she’d say “I love you” as she dished out dinner. When the kitchen closed, she transferred those loving messages into holiday cards for residents of a nearby homeless shelter. Thousands of strangers have since joined the Christmas Card Collective, inundating Erin with thoughtful handwritten cards. With help from her employer, a freight company, Erin ships the cards to more than 50 homeless shelters. “A card is not a meal, but it’s deeply nourishing. It has the ability to breathe life into someone,” she says. For tips on starting your own chapter of the Christmas Card Collective, visit the Christmas Card Collective on Facebook.

hen Mike, 73, was growing up, “my dad made any toys I got for Christmas,” he says. “We couldn’t afford to buy them.” These days, military vet Mike and his wife, Judy, 72, do the same for children in need. In their 40' x 60' workshop, next to their house, they labor year-round to build nostalgic wooden toys: trains, puzzles, animals, you name it. They have given each of the 8,000 toys they’ve created by hand to a child for free. “We’re not looking for anything but smiles on children’s faces,” says Judy, who helps with assembly, sanding, painting, and quality control. “We want folks to realize somebody out there cares.” Supplies cost about $10,000 a year, but Mike’s business card says it all: I don’t sell toys. You can donate to help me make more toys. If you can’t, you’re the reason I make toys.

ix months pregnant and with a 17-month-old daughter to feed, Lizbeth stared into her bare fridge. With only $30 a week to spend at the supermarket—a pittance even in 1988—she sometimes had to choose between diapers and food. In mid-December, Lizbeth’s friend Shelly Dalton stopped by her apartment and got a glimpse of the empty refrigerator. She didn’t say a word. Neither did Lizbeth. “I wasn’t allowed to talk about it,” Lizbeth says. A few days before Christmas, a stranger knocked on the door. “Santa’s elves are here early!” he said as he handed Lizbeth boxes of diapers, maternity clothes, toys, and enough food to fill the refrigerator. These gifts, Lizbeth knew immediately, had been arranged by Shelly. “It was a glimmer that things could be better and people were there to help,” she says. Decades later, Lizbeth’s friendship with Shelly stays strong. “Shelly is someone who has faith in action,” says Lizbeth, now 57. “She says, ‘What can I do to make things better?’ ”

rush up on a sneaky potential heart disease risk: poor oral hygiene. Here’s what the research tells us so far: Gum disease is associated with an overall increased chance of developing heart disease. Severe gum disease can impact blood sugar levels, which can become a big problem for people with diabetes, a heart disease risk factor. Poor dental health increases the chance of bacterial infection in the mouth and

bloodstream, through which it may travel elsewhere in the body and cause heart-related issues like blood vessel inflammation. Periodontal disease might also be linked to metabolic syndrome, a cluster of five characteristics (such as high blood pressure and excess belly fat) that boost the chance of cardiovascular disease. Try these three easy tweaks to your dental routine to keep your chompers and ticker strong: ✦

1

Brush at least twice a day and floss at least once. If you’re concerned about your flossing technique, try using a water flosser to help flush out particles you may have missed.

3

Make regular dental checkup and cleaning appointments so your dentist can alert you to any trouble.

✦ ✦

2

Use a tongue scraper or brush your tongue (with your toothbrush, trace a big “X,” then draw a line down the middle) to zap its bacterial coating.

he holidays might be filled with twinkle lights, tradition, and cheer, but they can also be a little frantic. That extra tension might mean a detour from all those good-for-you habits you normally stick with to support a healthy heart, body, and mind. Press pause and just breathe—we’ve found simple tips and tricks to help you navigate (and enjoy!) this time of year.

Deck the ha lls

Don’t have time to devote to your usual workouts? Find ways to get your heart rate up while you live your life and tackle your tasks. Trudge through the snow (or mud) to pick out your Christmas tree, spend quality time with your kids or grandkids by having a snowball fight or playing a game of cool-weather tag, and consider those trips up and down stairs lugging holiday decor from the attic as the equivalent of a whole bunch of squats. Cleaning the house, shoveling the front walk—those count as physical activity too!

When you feel overwhelmed, try this stress-relieving, mindbalancing breathing technique from Judy Ho, Ph.D., a clinical neuropsychologist and author of Stop Self-Sabotage: Six Steps to Unlock Your True Motivation, Harness Your Willpower, and Get Out of Your Own Way. It’s called box breathing, and it’s so easy, you can do it while you’re waiting for the cookies to bake or your relatives to arrive. Imagine there’s a box in front of your face and use your finger to trace its border: Breathe in as your finger goes up one side, hold your breath as it goes across the top, exhale as your finger moves down the other side, and hold your breath again as it continues across the bottom to close the rectangle. “Repeat that five to 10 times,” suggests Ho. “It’s so visceral, and tracing the box really helps you slow your breathing and focus on being present with your breath.”

Whether you are planning to have loved ones drop by or keeping the celebrations small again this year, decorating will do more than fill your home with holiday cheer. Engaging in nostalgic activities like making homemade ornaments or the ritual of lighting candles can increase feelings of optimism and self-esteem and foster social connections—all of which give you a health boost. And festive outdoor touches like string lights and a pretty wreath can strengthen bonds with neighbors because it shows that you’re social and approachable.

HEART SMART

Having a variety of social relationships (like with neighbor friends) may help reduce heart-related risks.

LIVE LONGER & STRONGER

P ro t e c t y o u r s l e e p A good night’s rest is important—it recharges your body, keeps your immune system strong, and supports a healthy weight (good for your heart). If you can’t conk out, try this twist on counting sheep. “The Calm app made an eight-hour video about sheep that’s meant to help you sleep—if you need a new trick, this just might help,” says Raj Dasgupta, M.D., a sleep medicine expert and spokesperson for the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. Search for “Baa Baa Land” on YouTube and drift off to the sound of sheep grazing in a field.

HOT COCOA

The flavanols in cocoa may improve blood flow, aid in cognitive function, and help lower blood pressure. To wield some control over the sugar, DIY a mug using unsweetened cocoa, Moore recommends, and add a touch of sweetener yourself.

GUMBO

Front and center on many Southern holiday tables, “gumbo is good for the soul,” Moore says, and it’s filled with veggies, herbs, and lean proteins like chicken and seafood.

Holiday faves aren’t exactly considered health food, but we’re here to tell you that it’s perfectly OK not to add chickpeas to your Christmas cookies. In fact, simply savoring these traditional foods instead of depriving yourself is the best way to nosh healthfully. “You don’t have to healthify everything. When it comes to holiday eating, my approach is to enjoy the foods you love,” says culinary and integrative dietitian Marisa Moore, R.D.N. While you’re at it, you might just be taking in some nutrients anyway.

Every Italian family makes different Feast of the Seven Fishes dishes, and seafood tends to be an excellent source of heart-friendly omega-3’s.

21 Vanilla Cupcakes (recipe at right, from 2 batches) 6½ cups Vanilla Buttercream (recipe at right, from 2½ batches) 1 medium open star piping tip (#823-#824) Red gel food coloring Desiccated coconut (optional) Pink Necco Wafer, for mouth; brown M&M’s, for eyes

1 If necessary, trim any domed tops off cupcakes. On large flat serving platter, create shape of Santa. For head, form circular shape using 8 cupcakes. Place 1 in center, 4 around top, and 3 around bottom of circle. Next, create 2 lines of 4, following natural curve of circular head. To complete beard, form a line of 3 and a line of 2. Try to fit cupcakes between rows of lines above. 2 Use small dab of frosting to “glue” each cupcake to platter (this will make it easier to frost). Top each cupcake with generous 1 Tbsp frosting and spread evenly, adding extra frosting to fill in gaps between cupcakes if necessary. Refrigerate until no longer

tacky to the touch, at least 20 min. 3 Use toothpick to score design, placing eyes, nose, hat, and mustache. Fit large piping bag with star piping tip. Fill bag with 2 to 3 cups buttercream (if bag is only 12 in., it will need to be refilled halfway). 4 Tint ¾ cup of remaining frosting light pink and ½ cup of it red. Transfer each of these colors to small piping bag. For red and pink, cut ¼ in. to ½ in. off 1 corner. 5 Pipe pink into space outlined for face, then smooth evenly with small offset spatula (to smooth top and sides, after cake has been completely frosted, run offset spatula under hot water 10 sec., dry completely, then use to smooth). 6 Repeat with red frosting in spaces for hat and shoulders. Refrigerate until no longer tacky to the touch, at least 20 min. 7 Use white buttercream to create trim for hat (top with coconut if desired). Next, pipe beard: Pipe swirl shapes for beard, then fill in any gaps with small stars. Refrigerate until no longer tacky, at least 20 min.

8 Pipe mustache by making 3 wiggly lines on either side. For additional height, add second layer directly on top. 9 Using remaining red, pipe folded tip of hat and smooth lines with spatula to mimic fabric. Use white buttercream to pipe 1½-in.-high round. Freeze 5 min., then roll in coconut to make pom-pom; attach with dab of frosting. 10 To complete face, make pink frosting nose. Use dab of frosting to attach Necco Wafer below mustache and M&M’s for eyes. Refrigerate until no longer tacky, at least 20 min. 11 Use red to pipe outline on hat and shoulders. Serve at room temp. Candy Cane Roulade ACTIVE 30 MIN. ✦ TOTAL 45 MIN. SERVES 10

Cake Confectioners’ sugar, for dusting 1 cup all-purpose flour 1 tsp baking powder ¼ tsp kosher salt 4 large eggs, at room temp ⅔ cup granulated sugar 2 Tbsp whole milk 1 Tbsp canola oil ¾ tsp red gel food coloring 1 tsp pure vanilla extract Filling 4 oz white chocolate, chopped 1 cup very cold heavy cream ½ tsp pure peppermint extract

ROULADE: KATE WHITAKER.

Glaze and decorating ¼ cup granulated sugar 4 candy canes

1 Spray 10- by 15–in. jelly-roll pan with cooking spray and line with parchment paper. Lightly spray parchment and gently wipe away excess with paper towel so no droplets remain. Heat oven to 350°F. 2 Lay large kitchen towel on work surface and dust generously with confectioners’ sugar. 3 In medium bowl, sift together flour, baking powder, and salt. 4 In large bowl, using electric hand mixer, beat eggs and sugar on medium speed until pale and slightly thickened, 2 to 3 min. Beat in milk, oil, red food coloring, and vanilla. 5 Reduce mixer speed to low and gradually add flour mixture until just combined.

6 Transfer batter to prepared pan, spreading it gently and evenly. Tap pan on work surface a few times to get rid of any air pockets. Bake until cake looks set but gives slightly when gently pressed (it should seem slightly underbaked), 13 to 15 min. 7 Immediately loosen edges of cake from pan with blunt knife and invert onto kitchen towel dusted with confectioners’ sugar. Carefully peel off parchment and dust top with confectioners’ sugar. Starting at short end, slowly roll up cake and towel. Let cool completely. 8 Meanwhile, make sugar syrup: Place sugar and 1⁄4 cup water in small saucepan on medium and cook, stirring occasionally, until sugar has dissolved. Increase heat and gently

simmer 1 min. Remove from heat and let cool completely. 9 When ready to fill cake, make filling: In large bowl, melt chocolate in microwave in 30-sec. increments at 50% power, stirring in between, then set aside. In second bowl, using electric mixer, beat cream and peppermint until stiff peaks form. Fold one-third of cream into chocolate, then fold in remaining cream. (If chocolate starts to set while beating cream, rewarm it in microwave for 10 sec. at 50% power.) 10 Carefully unroll onequarter of cooled cake, propping up remaining rolled portion with bowl (this will help prevent cracking) and spread on some filling, leaving 2-in. border from short edge. Repeat with remaining

filling, then roll back up and place seam side down on serving platter. Gently brush outside with sugar syrup. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate until chilled, at least 4 hr. or up to overnight. 11 To decorate, place 1 candy cane in sandwich bag and gently crush using rolling pin. Right before serving, dust roll with confectioners’ sugar and top with crushed and whole candy canes. PER SERVING 335 CAL, 16 G FAT (8.5 G SAT), 5 G PRO, 150 MG SODIUM, 43 G CARB, 0 G FIBER

Pear Tarte Tatin ACTIVE 30 MIN. ✦ TOTAL 1 HR. 10 MIN. ✦ SERVES 10

Pastry 1½ cups all-purpose flour, plus more for surface ½ tsp kosher salt ½ cup (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, cut up 2 Tbsp trans-fat-free vegetable shortening 1 tsp finely grated lemon zest 2 to 4 Tbsp ice water Filling 1 cup sugar 6 Tbsp unsalted butter 1 Tbsp fresh lemon juice ¼ tsp kosher salt 3¾ lbs firm-ripe Bosc and Bartlett pears, peeled, halved, and cored

1 Prepare pastry: In food processor, combine flour and salt. Add butter and shortening and pulse until coarse crumbs form. Pulse in lemon zest. Sprinkle in ice water, 1 Tbsp at a time, pulsing after each addition, until large, moist crumbs just begin to form. Gather dough into ball; flatten into disk. Wrap disk in plastic wrap and refrigerate until firm enough to roll, 1 hr. or up to overnight. 2 Line baking sheet with parchment. On lightly floured surface, with floured rolling pin, roll dough to 12-in. round.

Transfer to prepared sheet and refrigerate. 3 Heat oven to 425°F. Prepare filling: In heavy oven-safe 12-in. skillet, heat sugar, butter, lemon juice, and salt on medium-high, stirring occasionally, until mixture begins to boil. 4 Add pears to skillet, rounded sides down. Cook 5 min. Turn rounded sides up and cook 5 min. longer. Turn pears over so rounded sides are down and cook until syrup has caramelized and thickened, about 5 min. (Reduce heat slightly if syrup browns too quickly before thickening.) 5 Remove skillet from heat. Carefully invert dough (still on parchment) onto pears in skillet; discard paper. Fold edge of dough under to fit dough into skillet and form rim around edge. Cut 6 small slits in dough. Bake until golden brown, 25 to 30 min. Let cool in pan on wire rack 5 min. 6 To unmold, place large platter over top of tart. Quickly and carefully turn platter and skillet upside down to invert tart; remove skillet. Transfer platter to wire rack; let cool slightly to serve warm. PER SERVING 405 CAL, 20 G FAT (11 G SAT), 3 G PRO, 290 MG SODIUM, 57 G CARB, 4 G FIBER
