Interested in adopting a more plant-based diet? It doesn’t have to mean skipping meat all the time, but it’s certainly a way to put the focus on other food groups that aren’t as used to being centre stage on your dinner plate. You may have noticed an increase in vegan recipes in recent issues of Canadian Living— and that’s because you’ve been asking for them! Turn to page 84 to try this issue’s vegan dinner menu. A vegan diet consists of fruits, vegetables, nuts and whole grains. Animal products—meat, dairy and eggs—are never consumed. Some vegans include honey and gelatin in that group.

A vegan diet isn’t for everyone, but if you want to incorporate more plant-based foods into your lifestyle, start with small steps. Make some of your favourite recipes without the meat (you might not miss it), dedicate one or two nights per week (then three or four) to vegetarian meals and, when take-out cravings hit, opt for restaurants and cuisines that offer dishes that don’t rely so heavily on meat. Nutritional Note: Consider taking supplements if your plant-based dietary intake doesn’t meet your nutritional requirements. Common supplements recommended for vegetarian diets include vitamins C, D and B12; iron, zinc and calcium; and omega-3.

Some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. With its crystal-clear waters and white sandy beaches, the island of Barbados is a little corner of paradise. Home to 110 kilometres of free beachfront, some spots, like Bottom Bay, are regularly ranked among the most beautiful beaches in the world. What’s so wonderful about this country is that there are two very different types of landscapes from one coast to the other. To the west, Barbados is bordered by the Caribbean Sea, which makes for an ideal place to go to enjoy a quiet day under the shade of a coconut tree—a picture-perfect tropical postcard setting. It’s also on this side of the island that you’ll find the most luxurious hotels and resorts. On the east is a real change of scenery, where the Atlantic Ocean roars across the dramatic, wild and rocky coastline. Bathsheba, popular with surfers who make their way to this small village, is also known for its otherworldly rock formations sculpted by the waves. Just a few minutes from the village is a charming little inn, the Eco Lifestyle Lodge, which not only offers affordable rooms but also has views of the sea that will take your breath away.

Diving excursions can include a stop to check out the local shipwrecks.

Turtles and shipwrecks. There’s no shortage of diving adventures in Barbados, but you don’t have to be an expert to enjoy an unforgettable moment at sea. In Carlisle Bay, all you need is a mask, a snorkel and a pair of flippers to go swimming with sea turtles. Local businesses offer catamaran excursions from Bridgetown, the island’s capital, to meet these majestic creatures. You can also poke around the shipwrecks that lie at the bottom of Carlisle Bay, like the Cornwallis, a Canadian ship torpedoed by German submarines during the Second World War. Today, the wreck serves as home to many species of tropical fish. But if you’re not in the mood to swim, or just not comfortable with flippers on your feet, don’t worry— you can stay on the catamaran and sunbathe while sipping on rum punch; many excursion companies offer packages that include lunch and bottomless drinks.

Wind sports. Barbados is amazing for any kind of wind sport, from kitesurfing to sailing. Silver Sands Beach, located on the southern tip of the island and about 20 kilometres from Bridgetown, is a great place to learn why kitesurfing and windsurfing are so popular here. From November to June, trade winds almost always blow from the east, creating optimal conditions.

Rum. This small Caribbean island was one of the first to produce rum on a large scale. In Bridgetown, you can tour the historic Mount Gay distillery, which began making alcohol from sugar cane as early as 1703. St. Nicholas Abbey is also worth a visit. Located near Cherry Tree Hill at the heart of the island, this 17th-century sugar cane plantation and Jacobean manor will propel you into Barbados’s colonial past. Don’t miss the opportunity to tour the estate on an old steam locomotive dating back to 1914. The ride will lead you up to the top of Cherry Tree Hill to take in spectacular views of the green hills along the east coast. 16 | CANADIAN LIVING MARCH 2020

Bajan cuisine. While Barbados is known for its rum, it’s also an island with a distinct local food scene. Typical Bajan fare features a unique mix of flavours with African, Indian and British influences. Flying fish, the island’s national dish, is a must, along with fish croquettes. A fun way to learn about Barbados’s cuisine is to head to Oistins, one of the island’s main fishing villages. Every Friday evening, dozens of food stalls offer all kinds of fresh grilled or fried fish in a festive atmosphere (calypso music included!). It’s an evening to remember for locals and tourists alike.

Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the capital city of Barbados is a must-visit to learn more about the history of this former British colony, including its role in the sugar and slave trades. In the historic centre you’ll find the imposing neo-Gothic parliament buildings and the Independence Arch, built in 1987 on Chamberlain Bridge, to commemorate the 21st anniversary of self-governance. The city centre also features a lively shopping district: Head over to Broad Street, the main commercial thoroughfare, to check out the many shops that offer goods tax free. When you’re feeling peckish, check out Swan Street, a busy pedestrian strip featuring local foodstuffs, including fresh coconut water.

USE: Spread the mask in a thick layer on a clean face, strictly following the manufacturer’s instructions and the allotted time to leave it on. “Given that this is a cocktail of concentrated ingredients, keeping it on beyond the prescribed time can start to irritate and weaken the skin,” says Hélène Leblond, dermo-aesthetician and co-owner of EQLib Medispa in Montreal. “Clean your face with a gentle exfoliator to get rid of dead skin cells to allow for better penetration,” says Leblond. “Afterward,” advises Jennifer Brodeur, CEO and cocreator of the JB Skin Guru skin-care brand, “once you’ve removed the excess mask with a lotion-soaked cotton pad, apply a moisturizing cream. This type of mask quenches dehydrated skin with low water reserves when you don’t drink enough, are exposed to high winds or excess pollution, sleep poorly, or take a long plane ride, etc. Like a tall glass of water for the skin, this type of formula hydrates the epidermis and replenishes it by focusing mainly on minerals and hyaluronic acid, a molecule sponge capable of retaining a thousand times its weight in water.

USE: Turn to this mask (up to three times a week) as soon as your complexion starts to dull or dry. “And if your chosen formula is in leaf form, make sure that it’s perfectly placed on the face so that each area is evenly nourished,” advises Brodeur. You can even use a jade or quartz roller to help you!” Moisten the face with a toner beforehand to help the mask absorb, then seal the skin under a nourishing serum or cream afterward,” advises Leblond.

DEEP CLEANSING Masks in this formulation are meant to detoxify by unclogging pores and eliminating impurities and excess sebum to clear up oily skin and reduce the occurrence of blackheads and pimples. Based mainly on absorbent agents and soothing ingredients like clay, this type of mask absorbs dirt and excess oil, leaving the face purified.

USE: It is best to apply this mask to the skin regions prone to breakouts (forehead, nose and chin). "As much as possible, stick to the prescribed time,” warns Leblond. “If left on for too long, the clay begins to absorb too many lipids, which can dehydrate, forcing you to rub and irritate the skin to remove it,” she notes. “If you feel that your skin needs a very deep cleanse, let the mask stay on a few more minutes, but make sure to cover your face with a damp washcloth, which will allow the clay to retain its malleability and be less abrasive,” recommends the expert. Using your fingertips, soften the mask with lukewarm water, then remove it with a wet facecloth or makeup remover wipes. This type of product helps redefine the contours of the face, soften the jawline and gently lift drooping eyelids for just a few hours. Unlike other types of masks that penetrate pores and activate from the inside out, the lifting formula acts mechanically. By drying on the surface of the skin, the mask leaves a tensor film that instinctively lifts facial features—for a short time. It’s also often enriched with peptides, ingredients capable of stimulating collagen production, so that, when used over time, the layers of the skin’s supporting tissue visibly tighten.

USE: Applying it in front of a mirror, target the most relaxed facial areas, concentrating the lifting mask in a thin layer along the jawline, eyebrows, etc.). “First cleanse the skin with cold water, as the temperature retracts pores and firms the skin,” advises Brodeur. BRIGHTENING Master of the healthy glow, a brightening mask acts in two ways: In the short term, it hydrates and exfoliates skin, and in the long term, it gradually reduces the look of pigment spots. Vitamin C, glycolic acid, kojic acid, soy and licorice root extract are common ingredients in this type of mask, which perform a slight surface exfoliation and even out skin tone. This allows the skin to radiate, moving the focus away from blemishes and tightening pores, all resulting in a more illuminated complexion.

USE: “Apply this mask all over the face, rather than just in troubled spots,” advises Leblond. “When a dark spot emerges, it’s because there are several other problems lying beneath the skin, and although they might still be invisible to the naked eye, new spots will eventually appear. It’s way easier to prevent than to cure.” Since this mask exfoliates right away, simply apply it to makeup-free skin, rinse it off with rose water and complete the treatment with a brightening serum (before a fancy night out, for example), or your favourite anti-spot cream and SPF product (if you apply the mask during the day). “No spot will disappear in an instant," says Brodeur. “Time and regular treatments are necessary to mitigate it.”

Jane Fonda The word iconic gets thrown around pretty freely, but there’s no truer descriptor for author, activist, fitness mogul and two-time Academy Award-winning actor Jane Fonda. At 82, she’s as outspoken, mischievous and political as she was in her 30s, and when we were offered the opportunity to interview the L’Oréal Paris spokesperson, we were all in. The result was a thought-provoking and inspiring conversation, touching on everything from fitness and living life to the fullest to the democratization of beauty. TEXT JULIA M C EWEN

BEING JANE

You may think Jane Fonda’s life is all Hollywood glamour, but it turns out she’s just like the rest of us…well, almost.

This past Labour Day weekend Fonda made the decision to move from California to Washington, D.C., with the intent to use her celebrity status to try to raise a sense of urgency about the world’s climate crisis. On October 11, 2019, she was arrested at a climate change protest on the U.S. Capitol steps.

Fonda co-hosted the 58th annual Academy Awards with Alan Alda and Robin Williams in 1986 and bought her dress from Holt Renfrew in Toronto. The strapless sequinned gown was by Canadian designer Wayne Clark. “Those were the days when we wore our own clothes to the awards—I still have it,” she says. “I love it, and I’ve worn it to a lot of weddings.”

The dress Fonda wore to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art's gala in 2017 was “all beads, and weighed about 80 pounds,” she says. “I got home and I couldn’t unzip it by myself, so I just slept in it.” The next morning when a friend came to help her, she posted this photo to her Instagram feed to show how the other half really lives.


Q

You were on the cover of British Vogue’s special Non-Issue issue last spring. What was the idea behind that? The issue was aimed at changing preconceptions about aging and making women over 50 more visible in media. When I found out that Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, was working on this edition to focus on women who were making change and wanted to include me, I was very honoured. I loved the fact that on the cover one square was blank. There were all our faces and then one spot that sort of mirrored you back, like, "You, too, can be an agent for change."

How do you feel about being a L’Oréal Paris ambassador at 82? At my age to be a leading ambassador for a skincare company is amazing. It’s hard for me to believe, actually, but I’m grateful because it gives me a platform. I think that it’s good for older women to see that we can remain vibrant. It also gives me money, which I can use to support the organizations I believe in.

Has the representation of beauty in advertising changed since you started modelling? Yes. It’s more inclusive now, but it wasn’t the beauty brands who initially said, “We’re going to expand our view of what’s beautiful.” It was the women’s movement, the gay and lesbian movement, the people with disabilities movement, the

civil rights movement— all these mass movements around the world have forced people to open their hearts and minds and eyes to a more expanded view of what is beautiful, and that’s beautiful to see.

What’s your fitness routine like now? It’s slow. That’s the mantra. I didn’t start working out until I was in my 40s, but now, I do it pretty much every day with a trainer who specializes in working with older people. When you’re older, you want to go through the movements very carefully. Doing them correctly, being in the right position, is critical. What’s important is to keep moving, to use your muscles, to stay flexible and to stay strong, to protect your bones. I want to stay independent for as long as possible. I want to be able to sit on the floor and play with my grandchildren. I want to carry at least some of my own luggage, and not take 15 minutes to get out of the car.

What’s the best lesson you’ve learned about growing older? By the time I reached my 60th birthday, I discovered that I had been kind of brave and that I was deserving of love and respect, and that there were certain things I needed to accomplish before I died. Things like showing up more for my children, learning how to forgive and asking for forgiveness myself. I wasn’t afraid of dying, I was afraid of regretting. That process of reflection, when you embrace the fact that you’re mortal and you’re going to die, is wonderful because it then defines how you’re living in the here and now, and it makes your behaviour much more intentional. Living intentionally, knowing where you want to go and why and “putting your best self forward,” as Katharine Hepburn would say, is what we all need to do.

inheritances This month, we’re focusing on the important factors to consider to make an informed decision about an inheritance.

Canada is on a path to experiencing the largest transfer of wealth in history. We have an aging population and it has amassed wealth through retirement savings and asset accumulation. Billions of dollars will be transferred from our oldest generation to the younger ones, including baby boomers and their children, in the next couple of decades. While most of us relish the idea of receiving a windfall, a monetary inheritance usually comes at the expense of losing someone we love. This makes the endowment bittersweet, and because there are often strong emotions involved, extra care should be taken to ensure WKDW DQ\ ¿QDQFLDO OHJDF\ LVQœW ZDVWHG In Canada, inheritances can be bequeathed either while the owner is alive—called a living 48 | CANADIAN LIVING MARCH 2020

inheritance or gift, it allows the benefactor an opportunity to see the legacy used and appreciated—or after he or she has died, through a will or estate plan. An estate plan incorporates a will as well as additional directions for care while a person is still alive (e.g., power of attorney authorization, health-care directives, etc). The good news is that there is no tax on inheritances of either money or possessions such as jewellery, furniture or the like. Because there are often strong emotions involved, extra care should be taken to ensure that any financial legacy isn’t wasted.

It’s important to recognize that when it comes to dealing with the death of a family member, family tensions can easily escalate. As much as we like to think we’re rational creatures who always make logical and smart decisions, the opposite is more often true. As we are emotional beings, money and personal possessions take on greater importance and meaning when they’re associated with a relative and our heritage. Ideally, arguments can be avoided by an ounce of prevention in the form of a solid HVWDWH SODQ RU ZLOO DQG H̆HFWLYH FRPPXnication with those impacted. If the proverbial horse is already out of the barn, though, consider selling all the assets and splitting the proceeds equitably. If WKHUH DUH VWLOO UXĚˆHG IHDWKHUV LW PLJKW EH worth calling in a neutral outside party.

Consider these suggestions so you can set yourself up to make good decisions if you receive an inheritance:

It puts your children in the position of being responsible for your marital unhappiness. So, how do you tell them? First, don’t assume they will be devastated. Maybe they will, maybe they won’t. Maybe one will and one won’t. My husband wants sex a lot more than I do. It’s not that I want sex with someone else, I just don’t have the same libido he does—or that I once had. These days, I approach sex like a chore, counting the days until I’ll have to do it again. How can I make sure both our needs are met?

What you’re describing is what my colleague, sex therapist Aline Zoldbrod, calls the mercy sex cycle. You have “get it over withâ€? sex that is only somewhat satisfying for him and not at all satisfying for you. Not surprisingly, you become averse to these sexual experiences and so avoid another encounter as long as you can. But this only has the H̆HFW RI PDNLQJ \RXU SDUWQHU IHHO PRUH deprived and you more resentful about V\PSDWK\ RU ÂłJHW R̆ P\ FDVH´ VH[ $QG so it goes. The fact is that men have seven to eight times more testosterone (one of the arousal hormones) than women. That doesn’t mean that women don’t— or can’t—want sex, but rather that it PD\ WDNH ORQJHU IRU WKHP WR JHW WKHUH There are a few things you can do, right now, to correct this intimacy imbalance. • Stop seeing sex as an act of charity and end the mercy sex cycle. • Stop comparing your sex drive now WR ZKDW LW ZDV ZKHQ \RX ÂżUVW VWDUWHG dating. The rush of hormones you felt during the honeymoon stage isn’t sustainable; this is normal. • &RQVLGHU VFKHGXOLQJ VH[ ,I \RX NQRZ LWÂśV FRPLQJ \RX FDQ WDNH UHVSRQVLELOLW\ for getting yourself in the mood; psychologically prepare for it. Even as winter ends, it doesn’t seem to want to lessen its grip, and the long-term forecast is tight, itchy, red complexions. “We know that cold air holds less water than warm air, so in the wintertime skin is more susceptible to the drop in humidity,” says Dr. Susan Poelman, a dermatologist and assistant professor of dermatology at the University of Calgary. But a few easy changes to your skin-care routine can keep skin hydrated and happy from head to toe.

1Shower SMARTER

Stick to brief, warm rinses of not more than 10 minutes, preferably just twice a week. Daily steam-up-the-bathroom-mirrorstyle showers are off-limits because too much hot water will dry skin out. And so will using your favourite body wash, very likely. “Soap is the biggest dry-skin enemy,” says Dr. Poelman. “Use it only under the arms, around the groin and on your feet—you don’t need soap anywhere else unless your skin is obviously soiled,” she says. That’s because soap changes the natural pH level of the skin, disrupting lipid production, which contributes to parched complexions. People with dryness issues should opt for very gentle body washes and face cleansers designed for sensitive skin. (In the morning, you can even skip the facial cleanser and just splash your face with tepid water before you moisturize.) Think “soak and smear,” says Dr. Poelman. “Immediately after the shower, pat dry and smear in a cream right away to seal in moisture.”

Whether it’s done with a manual scrub or a product containing ingredients like lactic acid or fruit acids, exfoliating should be done with care, warns Cassandra Bradshaw, lead skin therapist at Province Apothecary’s Holistic Skincare Clinic in Toronto. “We use so many things every day that are already exfoliating that it’s easy to overdo it,” she says. If you’re cleansing your face with a rough textured washcloth and using an exfoliating serum, for example, you’re already doubling up your efforts. But, if you think your complexion could use a little bit of extra buffing, especially during the dry winter season, gentle manual exfoliants twice a week for the face and body should be plenty, she says. Opt for a very mild scrub that contains ingredients like oats to nourish, soothe and hydrate while sloughing off those dead skin flakes.

Once your face is buffed, it’s primed and ready for moisture. Start with a serum containing vitamin C. “It can repair any damage to the skin caused by UV exposure, environmental pollution or stress,” says Dr. Poelman. Follow that with your daily SPF 30 (yes, it’s essential whether you’re hitting the slopes or simply walking to and from the office). After your SPF soaks in, apply your moisturizer.

Shelve the light face lotion and level up with a seriously hydrating cream containing ingredients like ceramides and hyaluronic acid. They’ll help to protect the skin’s natural barrier, locking in moisture and preventing redness and irritation. “Sometimes people have the misconception that thick or heavy creams can make you break out, so they avoid them,” says Dr. Poelman. “But creams tend to be more hydrating, so for the body it’s good to switch.” Just look for products with the label ‘non-comedogenic’ for your face, meaning they won’t clog pores. For sensitive complexions, Bradshaw recommends layering a third line of defense on after your serum: “One thing I always recommend is a using a face balm,” she says. “For dry skin sufferers, it’s the perfect finale in a moisture-sealing ritual.” Dab it on to spot-treat chapped cheeks, for example, or smooth it over your face to seal in moisture. Keep the skin on your body hydrated with a rich butter or thick all-over product. Avocado, shea butter and pumpkin seed oil are other nourishing ingredients that will help to soothe and soften dry patches on your legs, arms or torso. If you have itchy spots, like on your shins, try your best not to scratch, warns Dr. Poelman. This can worsen the problem and even lead to infection if you break the skin. Soothe the area with frequent applications of a lavish, fragrance-free cream. “One good tip is to keep your moisturizer in the fridge, because if it’s cool it’s going to be soothing,” she says. After going through your bedtime skin-care ritual, take a few minutes, once or twice per week, to treat your epidermis to a nourishing mask. Pick one you can sleep in or one you can wear for a few minutes while you go about the rest of your nighttime routine. It’ll do wonders for a parched face and neck, but don’t forget hands and feet, too. “I tell my patients they can make their own masks by mixing coconut oil with their favourite fragrancefree cream,” says Dr. Poelman. After a shower or bath (or soaking your hands or feet in warm— not hot—water for 10 minutes), apply a thick layer of your rich DIY mask to your hands and/or feet, then cover up with cotton gloves or socks before you tuck into bed. “That has the desired effect of hydrating the skin by trapping the moisture,” she says. “It’s really quite effective.”

A good dusting with an angled bristle broom is enough to clean the ceilings and walls of bedrooms, living rooms, and dining rooms. On the other hand, dirt and grease can accumulate in the kitchen and bathroom, so these spaces require a more thorough going over. Use a mop that’s slightly dampened with a few drops of dish soap in some lukewarm water, and move in a backand-forth direction. Mops with a telescopic handle and pivot base are ultra-practical for getting int0 every nook and cranny, including those high, hard to reach corners.

A cleaning product that evaporates too quickly may be what’s leaving streaks on your windows. Another cause can be your cloth; some aren’t absorbent enough and just smear dirt particles around instead of wiping them away. Add pears to saucepan, submerging in liquid. Reduce heat; simmer until pears are tender, 15 to 20 minutes. Let stand for 5 minutes. Using slotted spoon, remove pears from syrup and set aside. salted butter, softened packed brown sugar granulated sugar eggs vanilla all-purpose our baking powder salt baking soda semisweet chocolate chips dulce de leche

In large bowl, using electric mixer, beat together butter, brown sugar and granulated sugar until creamy; beat in eggs and vanilla. ,Q VHSDUDWH ERZO FRPELQH Ă€RXU baking powder, salt and baking soda; using wooden spoon, stir into butter mixture until combined. Stir in chocolate chips. (Make-ahead: Dough can be wrapped in plastic wrap, refrigerated for up to 3 days or frozen for up to 1 month.) Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease sides of 8-inch square baking pan. Press half of the dough lightly into pan; spread dulce de leche over top, then press remaining dough lightly over top. Bake for about 30 minutes or until golden at edges. Let cool completely; cut into 16 squares.
