When December gets hectic, a zone of your own is the best escape.

Pi k PaRaDiS “For me, relaxation means warm, sunny colors,” says Tara Suydam (@taracottasunrise), like the ones in the rainbow she painted in her Columbus, OH, crafts room. It’s basically impossible not to decompress in a wicker egg chair that’s nearly 3 feet deep (from Target) and surrounded by nubby blankets and pillows. “I’m 6 feet tall and I’ve taken naps here,” she says.

e r

(AND IN YOUR HOME)

I EI LaI to check lists...and enjoy morning coffee. That would be Tiffany DeLangie (@prettyrealblog), who commandeered an empty corner in the family room of her house in Raleigh, NC. She built the table by nailing ⅜-inch round dowels to a stiff fiber tube and attaching a pine-edge round top with wood glue; the leatherette chairs are from Apt2B. “When my family’s watching TV,” she says, “having my own space means I’m there but not there.” A bamboo bath caddy has slots for an e-reader.

sAy “sPaAaAaA” It’s a bathroom fantasy come true, on a budget. “I searched for sales and chose simple, sophisticated finishes to create a space for me, even if my boys do end up in the tub!” says Kim Bui (@xomyhome), who lives in Tampa, FL. She snagged the slipper soaking tub for $649 at The Home Depot. Shiplap-style walls painted Pure White by SherwinWilliams and pale wood-look porcelain tile from Floor & Decor enhance the clean, minimalist appeal.

HGTV Magazine 25

s oF sIlE C The light that pours into the sunroom of blogger Camille Lai (@houseof.lais) in Orlando, FL, is a mood changer all right, “though what I love most is how quiet it gets when I close the glass doors to the rest of the house. There are six of us and a dog in 1,200 square feet.” A cushy Castlery sectional is total sprawl-out temptation. Add a big lumbar pillow (from CB2) plus an episode of Property Brothers: Forever Home and…bliss. Sconces from Kichler Lighting fancy up a desk.

oRk Ha ) (@thehousethatDIYbuilt) of Kaysville, UT. Her husband made the cabinetry (with caning stapled on the doors) and butcher-block desktop, and she brought in scallop-patterned wallpaper from Livette’s, copper piping spray-painted gold, and a carved wood chair from World Market. “This is where I work on holiday cards,” she says, “and having my plant babies around me is soothing.”

fun decorating

The fluffier, the better! The pillow and rug are from HomeGoods, and the throw is from Anthropologie.

H EsT EsT As a mom of five kids ages 6 to 12, Charlotte Smith (@atcharlotteshouse) of Fairfield, CT, counts on this bedroom nook for downtime. “It helps that there’s a lock on the door!” she says. Charlotte gave it treetop vibes by painting the walls and the thrifted cabinet the same green hue (Matcha Latte by Clare). The tweedy Ralph Lauren chaise, a Facebook Marketplace find, is her go-to sanctuary for cuddling up with a book.

FYI These are birdhouses! Remove any perches with a handsaw. After sanding down each structure, brush on a coat of white Gesso (it’s thicker than primer and very smoothing).

candy cane castle 1. Adhere vertical strips of red washi tape all over the house and trim the ends. We used 15-millimeter washi tape for the diagonal stripes and 8-millimeter for the straight ones. To make small pieces for the doorway and windows, place a strip of 15-millimeter tape on wax paper and cut—they’ll peel off easily. Attach washi tape to white vellum, then adhere vellum to the inside of each window with double-sided tape. 2. Cut a piece of red cardstock for the door and adhere with double-sided tape on the inside of the house. Hot-glue on a white bead for the knob, then hot-glue a mini wreath to the house. wrapping paper cabin 1. Paint the base of the house green with crafts paint. Let dry. 2. Create a template for covering the front. Cut strips of printer paper to fit the front upper and lower sections, making sure they reach in corners and around the trim and window. Remove and use to trace the shapes you need on wrapping paper. Do the same for the back, sides, and roof.

Double Roof 8¼"-tall wood birdhouse, $7, joann.com

3. Working on one section of the house at a time, brush on a thin layer of decoupage glue, such as Mod Podge, and press on the same-shape piece of wrapping paper. Smooth to remove bubbles, let dry, and trim excess with a crafts knife. Brush on another layer of decoupage glue to seal. Let dry. Do the same for the trim. FYI That’s colored vellum inside the windows; cutting a hole on the bottom of the house makes it easier to attach.

faux-gingerbread cottage 1. Paint the house and fence with brown crafts paint. Let dry. 2. Use sticky tack to temporarily adhere polymer clay candy, including the faux lollipops, to the house and fence until you like the placement; do halved pieces for trim. 3. Outline the “icing” designs with a chalk pen, erasing mistakes with a damp cotton swab. Remove the tack and secure each piece with hot glue. Go over the chalk lines with puffy fabric paint to resemble “icing” and let dry. 4. For the green wreath, stick two pieces of adhesive craft foam together to make a doubly thick piece. Trace a circle on top and cut with scallop scissors. Decorate with stick-on snowflakes and small circles of adhesive cut with a hole punch. Using a ¾"-hole punch, cut out circles of glitter paper for the roof “shingles.” Starting at the bottom of each roof, brush on decoupage glue and adhere a row of circles. Repeat, overlapping “shingles” slightly until each roof is covered. 3. To glitterize different parts of the house, brush decoupage glue on one spot at a time and shake on fine glitter. Tap the house to remove excess. 4. Decorate with gems (they make cute “doorknobs”), using hot glue. 5. For the dusting of snow, mix chunky snow glitter, fine glitter, and hexagonal glitter. Working in sections, brush decoupage glue onto spots where snow would naturally pile up, and shake on the glitter mix. Pat down and repeat. A sprinkling of bottlebrush trees and a banner or two add to the festivities; the “Merry Christmas” one is made of felt letter ornaments. 36 HGTV Magazine

TRY A GARLAND SLEIGHT OF HAND Sure, you can drape greenery to one side! (Mind: blown.) To trick out any basic garland so it’s more lavish and impressive, intertwine beads, pinecones, faux greenery, or a crocheted garland such as the star kind above. Sleek pieces, like the trees on the mantel, and a shiny Santa from CB2 balance the abundant texture.

“My extended family gathers for

a viewing of the Christmas classic Love Actually, and we have a proper English tea. The rules are, guests must wear a turtleneck and speak in a British accent the entire time. I serve crumpets and ample amounts of mulled wine. The bad accents might get old, but the fun never does!” —Stephanie Seferian, Boston, MA

“Following Christmas lunch, 26 family members ages 2 to 95 simultaneously open party poppers, grab the whistles, put on paper crowns, and rush to opposite ends of the house to practice for our annual

kids versus adults Christmas carol competition. Grandmommy calls the shots, and if your team has to stand on one foot while performing, so be it. It’s pure chaos that ends in side-splitting, tears-rolling-down-our-cheeks laughter every single year.” —Kristy Woodson Harvey, Beaufort, NC

“We make a day out of choosing a tree with our kids, and

the fir we pick has to be bigger than Daddy, who stands 6 feet, 5 inches tall. Last year, the attendant at the lot kept offering up smaller trees. Our two girls would shake their heads and say, ‘Oh, no, that is not a Daddy tree,’ and we’d giggle. Definitely one of those things that will forever hold a fond spot in our memories.” —Shakira Patterson, Monterey, CA

NOT BAH, HUMBUG!

BAH, HUMBUG!

how bah, humbug is it to wear a not-ugly sweater to an ugly-sweater holiday party? Resist the urge to look great; this is about setting the mood. “You don’t have to be frumpy to be festive,” says style trendsetter Christine Bibbo Herr (@nycpretty). Chic up a flamboyant sweater by wearing a white collared shirt underneath and fitted jeans, leggings, or tights—bonus points if they’re red or green—with booties. If you can’t bear to shell out for a hideous top, she suggests WRITTEN BY JUNO DEMELO

safety-pinning a holiday-themed sock to a solid-color sweater, sweaterdress, or sweatshirt to make a “stocking,” then sticking a candy cane inside. Revelers have also been known to pin on ornaments or wear a light-up necklace. You may not win ugliest sweater, but you won’t be labeled a party pooper, either.

how bah, humbug is it to send a holiday card without photos?

Wishing lots of cheer from our family to yours!

“Rest assured it is totally OK to not do a photo card, and it can be less stressful,” says Lizzie Post, copresident of The Emily Post Institute in Waterbury, Vermont. Getting your gang to synchronize smile for a shoot isn’t always a joy. “Leaving out photos doesn’t mean it’s the lazy version,” continues Post. “Putting something together and sending it counts as personal.” She’s a DIY card type, though you can customize store-bought kinds by asking the kids to draw or doodle on them. Or have everyone sign their names assembly-line style (snacks are excellent incentive). If you end up regretting the lack of a pic, print copies of a favorite one and slip them in.

That’s actually a generous thing to do. “Price limits are a way to make participants happy without blowing their budgets,” says financial analyst Chris Browning, cohost of the money podcast This Is Awkward. Start with a lowball amount. “Throw out $20 when you want the limit to be $40, that way people have room to push back.” And if anyone still objects, compromise. Say the issue is that you’d like to avoid Granny and Gramps showering your children with a million goodies. You might strike a middle ground by capping the number of presents and letting them spend a little more. Should anyone blow past the limit entirely, says Browning, “give them a bit of grace, because it’s coming from a good place. Gifts are how some people express love.”

how bah, humbug is it if you refuse to let your cat play with gift wrap?

Fine, take away the ribbon. Got any catnip-scented tissue paper?

Despite the fact that they tend to act aloof, most felines have zero chill when it comes to wrapping paper—and it’s fine to let them have at it. “My cats love when I ball the paper up into a pile for them to dive into and bat around,” says Michelle Meyer, D.V.M., a veterinarian in Sterling Heights, MI, and president of the American Association of Feline Practitioners. “The stuff you have to be careful about is ribbon, tinsel, and tags with strings.” When a cat swallows something long and thin and it ends up stuck around their tongue or in their stomach, it may lead to a potentially lifethreatening condition requiring surgery. Brown paper packages, yes; tied up with string, no.

Like fruitcake, the drink can be divisive. Pass with a shot of class and you won’t offend. “Give a compliment before you turn it down,” says Tara Bench, author of the cookbook Live Life Deliciously. “You might say, ‘That looks fab, but I hope you don’t mind if I stick with wine tonight.’ A good host doesn’t need an explanation!” Want to be companionable when friends are guzzling nog and you can drink it without feeling like a contestant on Fear Factor? Ask for half a glass, and remember that nobody expects you to finish every last drop. Keep it real, says Bench: “If you say you aren’t drinking, you might be stuck with a nonalcoholic beverage all night.”

hen your home’s colors are a mix of reds, pinks, blues, and greens, decking the halls for the holidays is as merry as it is easy. “Our palette goes with pretty much everything except Halloween,” says Meg Monteith, who moved into husband Scott’s 1960s ranchstyle house in Atlanta, GA, soon after they wed. Although he had replaced the white carpeting with wide-plank hardwood, rooms were half-empty and the overall vibe was outdated bachelor pad. Once the couple were having a baby, says Meg, “we wanted it to look like a family lived here.” And they knew just who to tap for help: Meg’s big brother, a.k.a. HGTV designer Brian Patrick Flynn. The friendly-with-flair scheme sprang from a knockout wallpaper by Thibaut that Scott found for the entry (totally impressing Brian). Now that they’re finished, those exuberant colors and personal touches have raised the joy factor through the roof.

KITCHEN Bland beige cabinets got a bargain facelift with deep green paint—dark enough to hide grubby fingerprints yet not overpowering in a room without much natural light. The siblings debated the layout of the backsplash tiles. “Brian preferred them stacked, but I look at spreadsheets all day for work and didn’t need to stare at another grid,” says Meg. “He gave in!” Both were into black grout, a modern move that makes the white tile pop.

MAIN BEDROOM Not one to shy away from color, Meg had bright pink walls in her old apartment’s bedroom. She reeled it in for Scott and they chose grasscloth wallpaper with sky blue streaks and a gray upholstered bed from Wayfair. “It feels like waking up in a hotel room,” says Meg. Brian snagged the blanket during a trip to Mexico, and it brings a jolt of energy.

BATHROOM It was an overhaul, done mostly by Scott. He ripped out the vanity and past-their-prime mauve square tiles and replaced them. The dog wallpaper nods to their fur babies. “We have two, one belonged to each of us when we met,” says Meg. “Our first date was in a dog park.”

If you put your all into making a house your own, it brings cheer the whole year. —Meg

into a just-built home is exciting. You’re the first ones to live there, everything’s new, and the potential is infinite. Only then you might realize that extralarge windows and soaring 10-foot-ceilings don’t exactly make you want to grab a throw and curl up on a couch. That’s the realization Fariha Nasir and Hassaan Anis had after they bought their Houston, TX, house in 2019. “It had a lot of features we wanted, but it felt cold,” says Fariha. With 3,200 square feet to fill and no budget to hire jobs out, Fariha created the features she craved. She placed molding on walls, hung congenial wallpaper, painted rooms enveloping colors, and dreamed up the best play area for her son, Zaki. The way she arranged furniture, hung art, and mixed in textiles that remind her of Pakistan, where she and Hassaan grew up, also bolstered the cozy factor. Says Fariha, “Now it’s the most warm and welcoming place possible.” Hassaan and Fariha with Zaki, 5

Fariha and Hassaan didn’t get to choose any of the finishes—the builder did—so they lucked out with gray-blue cabinets (try Lazy Gray by Sherwin-Williams for a similar look) and a marble subway tile backsplash. To cozy them up, Fariha put in brass knobs and cup pulls from Pottery Barn and a brass and black pendant by Rejuvenation. The piece of art above the cooktop (from Heirloom Print Shop on Etsy) and the one between the windows look nice and homey.

Faced with a room that had nothing interesting about it, Fariha installed picture-frame molding that she painted a complementary color to the kitchen cabinets (Motor City by Clare), and wallpaper by Magnolia Home. “The pattern reminds me of hand-loomed fabric from Pakistan called khaddar,” she says. A fire pit from The Home Depot, string lights, and a wall of reed molding (“I had a lot left over from our bedroom, and I don’t like wasting material,” says Fariha) form an outdoor living space that’s just as comfortable as the indoor version. “It’s not always chilly in Houston,” she says, “but you can find us here when it is.”

Infusing our home with comfort has brought lots of togetherness. It’s where we always want to be. —Fariha

sconces While they’re new, from Lucent Lightshop, Jenny chose brass kinds that seem plucked from an antiques store to go with the house. The swing-arms over the windows and the small ones with rectangular plates near the range are timeless.

windows Replacing the old single-pane variety with casement windows set higher up means the family can completely take in the view of the pasture and blueberry farm. “I decorate with pine leaves and branches from our property,” says Jenny.

g

iven that they’re the hosts of HGTV’s Fixer to Fabulous, Jenny and Dave Marrs know how to create beautiful kitchens: It’s their job! For their own, they also wanted to make sure it was welcoming and family-centric, and suited the 118-yearold farmhouse on the outskirts of Bentonville, AR. Cabinets by Morgan Millworks (painted Revere Pewter by Benjamin Moore) boast classic good looks, a quartzite backsplash and countertops are perpetually stylish, and new white oak floors seem like they were always there. The 3-foot-by-9-foot maple trestle table and bench, built by Dave, “is the center of our house,” says Jenny. “Someone is always doing homework at it, snacking, coloring, or, this time of year, wrapping presents!”

thick white oak ones hold a mix of dishes and cutting boards, both vintage and Dave-made. “Doing shelves instead of upper cabinets helps the room breathe, and we get to decorate them for the holidays,” says Jenny.

table + bench Dave milled the lumber from a maple tree that had to be taken down. “The kids helped him sand them in his workshop,” says Jenny. “I’m into the look of natural wood, so he used a clear sealer to protect them.” They found the chairs at the Round Top Antiques Fair in Texas.

Come Christmas, the kids gather round to whip up Grandma’s famous sugar cookies.

Catch the season premiere of Fixer to Fabulous on Tuesday, November 16, at 9 p.m. ET.
