It took a lot to become who you are and we want you to stay that way It’s been a long journey. After a lot of trials, mistakes, “learning opportunities,” you do finally get to a place where “you are you” and that feels pretty good. But right when you get your body and your mind and your spirit in tip-top shape, a funny thing starts to happen. Your hair might get a little grey. You might get a little slower. You might take a little more time to remember things. But you can keep everything you love about yourself. You can keep being you.

y family and I are celebrating an anniversary this month—we’ve lived in our house for 15 years. We’ve stayed put for many reasons, but chief among them is our neighbors. First let me recognize our across-thestreet friends Lou and Marcelo, who have been known to show up on our doorstep with cookies and a pitcher of Cosmos. And, next door, Annette. She’s not only the source of almost anything I’ve ever needed (a preschool suggestion, leaf bags, flour, her car), but she also wrote a glowing recommendation about our worthiness as adoptive parents that, we’re convinced, helped bring our daughter home to us. Then there’s Steve. He’s a little sneaky—on snowy days, he somehow manages to clear our sidewalk before we’re even out of bed. And while we’re away, the newspaper magically transports itself onto our porch. But if I had to award Neighbor of the Century to anyone, it would be Steve’s wife, Frances. She came to our graduation party last summer bearing what I believe is the best cheesecake ever. With her permission, I’m sharing the recipe (below). I’m guessing you have some cherished neighbors as well. Here’s how to recognize them for all they do: We’ve partnered with nextdoor.com, an online community, to find the Best Neighbor in America. Tell us about them, and you’ll be entered to win a block party worth $1,000. See page 16 for details. I’ll see if I can get Frances to throw in a cheesecake, too.

Heat oven to 350°F. Lightly coat a springform pan with cooking spray. In a bowl using your fingers, combine the graham cracker crumbs, butter and 2 Tbsp sugar. Press onto the bottom of the prepared pan. 2 Using an electric mixer, beat the cream cheese in a large bowl until smooth. Gradually beat in 1 cup sugar. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, then beat in 1 tsp vanilla. Pour the mixture 1
on top of the crust and bake until just set, 25 to 35 minutes. Remove from oven. 3 Increase oven to 500°F. In a bowl, combine the sour cream with the remaining 3 Tbsp sugar and 1 tsp vanilla. Spread evenly over the cheesecake (be careful not to press or push into the cake). Bake for 5 minutes. Let the cake cool, then refrigerate overnight. Serve with berries .

Dave Ramsey offered some really good advice about saving for a child’s education in an ESA versus a CD in the November 2015 issue. However, I don’t agree that college is the only option for education after high school. Trade, career and technical schools are valuable as well. Motherly sacrifices I was incredibly moved by the story about the single mother who struggled to balance working a full-time job and being there for her son [“Mending Fences,” November 2015]. As a single mom myself, I understand both sides of this coin. For years I dealt with guilt for not always being there for my daughter due to my job. Thank you for publishing such a sweet story. My neighbors and I visited the America’s VetDogs facility near where we live. We were so inspired by the organization, which trains service dogs to be given free of charge to disabled U.S. veterans, that we held yard sales and a charity auction and raised more than $16,000. We’re looking forward to hosting more community events in the future!

CLEVER USES FOR
Salt
Absorb oven spills
A dash of inspiration for this everyday seasoning.
If batter bubbles over your pan and onto the bottom of the oven, pour salt on it (protecting your arm with a mitt). It will be easy to sweep out the large salty pieces when the oven cools.

Clear your pores For nonsensitive skin, mix 1 Tbsp salt in 2 oz warm water. Soak cotton balls in the solution, wring them out and lay them on your face. Leave in place for 8 minutes, then rinse. The salt dissolves dirt for a cleaner complexion.
3
Revive overbrewed coffee
Place yellowed cotton fabrics in a pot of water. Add ¼ cup salt and ½ cup baking soda, then bring to a boil. Turn off the heat. Let soak for at least three days, then rinse with cold water and lay flat to dry.
To save a bitter cup of joe, stir in a pinch of salt. When it dissolves, the sodium ions break off and block harsh-tasting molecules. Your coffee will have a balanced flavor without a hint of saltiness.
5
Combat stinky smells The oils in garlic and onion leave a scent on your hands after cooking. Squirt lemon juice on your palms and sprinkle salt on top. Rub hands together, then thoroughly rinse. The lemon juice is a disinfectant and deodorizer, while the salt acts as an abrasive to remove the oil.

Old Teacups
CLINTON KELLY
WD’s columnist is Oh, teacups. Nobody seems to want to drink out of you anymore. cohost of ABC’s The (Insert sad-face emoji here.) Thanks to the world’s obsession Chew. Email him your home, food with coffee, you’ve slowly been pushed out of the limelight and or style questions: unceremoniously relegated to attics, basements and flea markets WDfeatures@ everywhere. It’s tragic, really. I say, let’s show the world you’re not just a hearst.com. vessel for English Breakfast to be sipped from a gloved hand! Here are three crafty ideas that breathe new life into this forgotten crockery.
TOTALLY EASY
Herbal tea
Once you begin growing your own herbs, you’ll never look at dried ones the same way again. Teacups make perfect containers for a windowsill garden, mostly because they’re so much prettier than plain pots. I’ve had the most luck with basil, parsley and thyme indoors, so you might want to give them a shot first.
PRETTY EASY
Flip it
Literally turn the idea of a teacup on its head by inverting one and using a ceramics glue (like Aleene’s Original Tacky Glue, $1.99; joann.com) to seal the saucer in place. The cup and saucer don’t even have to match! You can make several with different patterns and use them to serve small desserts like cupcakes and cookies, or to hold jewelry, loose change or even soap.
NOT AS EASY (BUT WORTH IT!)
WHAT’S YOUR NUMBER?
I have a soft spot for mosaics—they were the first craft I ever mastered! Teacups are a mosaicist’s best friend because they’re not only durable, they’re beautiful, too. Look for cups and saucers with the prettiest colors and patterns, smash them up and start gluing. Make frames, wall hangings or even house numbers for a fun twist. Go to page 146 for instructions.

O ONE AUGUST EVENING IN 2013, professor Carolyn Suda was walking across the quad at Monmouth College, a small liberal arts school in Illinois. Out of the corner of her eye, she spotted a young, dark-haired woman carrying a violin case. “We’re a small school, and I know everyone, so I thought, Who is that?” recalls Carolyn. “Then I realized, Oh my God, it’s Mariela!”
Carolyn ran up and embraced Mariela, whom she’d never met. “Something happened when I saw her eyes and she saw mine. The connection was immediate.” Not long before, Mariela Shaker, then 23, was teaching violin in her hometown of Aleppo, Syria. Mariela had to dart through rubble-filled streets with bombs detonating nearby to get to her students. But in March 2013, Carolyn, who directs

the college’s chamber orchestra, saw Mariela performing on a YouTube video sent to her by the head of the school’s international recruitment department. That’s when she made it her mission to bring Mariela to the United States. After watching Mariela play two difficult pieces with admirable skill, “I could tell that her affinity for the violin would be an asset to our orchestra,” says Carolyn. “I was aware, too, of the tragedy occurring in her country—we all felt so powerless and knew we wanted to help her.”
Violent explosions and daily power outages were Mariela’s reality. The daughter of an English teacher father and a mother who worked as a medical lab assistant, Mariela dreamed of becoming a professional musician before the Syrian civil war, which began four years ago. By the time Carolyn and Mariela began emailing, Aleppo was quickly becoming ground zero in the conflict, which has claimed 250,000 lives. “I would be in the classroom and a bomb would go off 100 feet away, and we’d have to dive under a table,” Mariela remembers.
Mariela never says, ‘Poor me.’ She realizes that life is a beautiful blessing of joy and pain…and she chooses joy.

soldiers were so suspicious of my violin case that I often had to open it to prove there was no gun.” The 185-mile trip took 17 hours.
SAYING GOODBYE
Mariela now lives in Chicago, over 3 hours away, but visits Carolyn and the Monmouth campus.
“My house was randomly bombed two or three times—windows shattered, door blown in.” The two women emailed for weeks and grew close. Because Mariela was so talented, Monmouth offered her a scholarship; Carolyn helped her acquire a student visa. Finally, in July, Mariela, her mom, Salwa, and brother Karam took a bus from Aleppo to Beirut. “It was the first day of Ramadan, and no one was allowed food or water. It was incredibly hot, with no air conditioning,” Mariela recalls. “We hit 40 or 50 checkpoints, and the
The trio then waited at the Beirut airport, talking until Mariela’s flight was called. Confident until then, Mariela turned to her mother and said, “I don’t know if I should take this risk.” “I’m not worried about you at all,” Salwa replied. “Be strong— you will do great.” So Mariela hugged her mom one last time and flew to the U.S. alone. Two days later, three buses traveling the same route out of Aleppo came under fire. Mariela heard that several civilians were killed. After they met on campus, Mariela and Carolyn quickly became inseparable. “Our bond was enormous right away,” says Carolyn. “I admired her so much. Here’s this girl who doesn’t know if she’ll ever see her parents again—she has to make it. She
doesn’t assume for one minute that anything will happen for her.” Mariela threw herself into her studies, and Carolyn was there to help her acclimate. She became the orchestra concertmaster—the person who is the lead violinist and assistant conductor—and practiced 8 hours a day. In the evenings, Carolyn helped her with her English and schoolwork, or took her on long walks along Lake Michigan. Mariela spent holidays with Carolyn and her husband, David, a retired humanities professor, who has likewise been a mentor to Mariela. (The couple also has an adult daughter, Annie, a professional cellist who lives in Los Angeles.) Mariela, now 25, has learned to love much about American life, although she’s not a fan of turkey, stuffing or ham. “I really miss my mom’s kibbe—ground meat with wheat and spices,” she says, “but I do like Chinese fried rice with vegetables.” Throughout her two years in the United States, Carolyn says, Mariela has remained fiercely self-sufficient, refusing to let the couple help her monetarily. WHERE MARIELA IS FROM
Only a few years ago, Aleppo, a once-beautiful city called “the Jewel of Syria,” was a major industrial center. Aleppo was pulled into the civil war in 2012, and government and rebel forces have been shelling one another ever since, causing tens of thousands to flee the city. In Syria, 11 million have had to leave their homes, and over 4 million have sought refuge in other countries.
important to Mariela is Carolyn’s love and encouragement. “Carolyn has always been there for me and is always willing to help. She cares so much,” says Mariela. “Every day, I worry about my parents, as well as my brother,” she says. (Karam emigrated to Greece on a rubber boat in October 2015, and, as of this writing, is in a refugee camp in the Netherlands.) That Mariela stays focused on her music amazes Carolyn. “Despite the adversity she’s faced, she never says, ‘Poor me,’” Carolyn says. “She realizes that life is a beautiful blessing of joy and pain…and she chooses joy.” Carolyn’s maternal presence has also been a source of comfort to Mariela’s parents in Aleppo, where they live without water, electricity or Internet. After Mariela’s spring 2014 recital, Carolyn spoke on the phone with Salwa and told her how beautifully Mariela had played. In a solemn voice, Salwa told Carolyn, “You are Mariela’s mother now.”

Mariela’s former home
Carolyn was stunned. “It was one of the most emotionally powerful moments,” she says. “I felt deeply sad for her as a mother, and also aware of how much a part of Mariela’s life I had become. I said, ‘I will never replace you; one day the two of you will be back together.’”
HER NEW LIFE
In 2014, Mariela was granted asylum in the U.S. She’s now working toward her Master of Music Performance at DePaul University. (She chose a Chicago program in part to stay close to the Sudas.) The reality is that Mariela may never see her biological family again. It’s nearly impossible to get a visa to come to the U.S. But she hopes her story will inspire young people struggling in Syria to never give up. Last year, Mariela played at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, for World Refugee Day. Her
performance was dedicated to the roughly 4 million Syrians who have fled since the conflict’s start. Now, when she’s not studying or working to support herself in Chicago, she fundraises for the Syrian-American Medical Society to bring healthcare to refugee camps. The group hopes to send Mariela and other artists around the world to settlements to teach young people the healing power of music and art. “These children have been exposed to a lot of violence,” says Mariela. “We need to live in peace. We have seen enough horror.” Mariela is making the most of her opportunities, and Carolyn is grateful for her surrogate daughter. “We are from different worlds, but we’re kindred spirits,” she says. “I always want to be a part of her life.” Mariela wouldn’t have it any other way. “She gave me care and warmth, and she has believed in me from the beginning. I could not have survived my new life without her being by my side,” she says. WANT TO HELP?

The Things We Keep by Sally Hepworth ($25.99; January 19) his book is such a page-turner!” says Women Who Wine member Carol Whalen. The story follows Anna Forster, a 38-year-old with earlyonset Alzheimer’s, as she moves into an assisted living facility. There she meets Luke, the only other resident her age. As their mental faculties decline, the two decide to fight their fates and try to form a bond that will last beyond memory. “Don’t shy away from this book because of the sad subject matter,” says Carol. “The disease was conveyed beautifully, with a delicate humor. At the end, we were left full of hope and love.”

The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend by Katarina Bivald ($16.99; in stores) Sara travels from Sweden to a rundown town in Iowa intending to meet Amy, a fellow book lover and her longtime pen pal—only to find that Amy had died just before her arrival. Unsure of her place there, Sara finds friendships among the locals, as well as a satisfying new way to share her love of books.
Where We Belong by Hoda Kotb with Jane Lorenzini ($24.95; in stores) Hoda Kotb, coanchor of the TODAY show, tells the stories of people who pushed through hardship and uncertainty to discover their life callings. From a cook turned doctor to a retired couple who adopted Haitian children, each tale proves that finding purpose is often a winding road, but it’s never too late to start.

1 Use a paintbrush to cover the wood tray with white acrylic paint; let dry (about 20 minutes). 2 With masking tape, outline the walls (inside and outside) and the interior of the tray to create a border. 3 Place the tray horizontally on your work surface. Center the stencil inside the tray along the interior edge closest to you, allowing it to overlap the tape border. Secure the stencil in place with a few pieces of tape. 4 Apply a very small
amount of pink paint to the stencil brush, then dab it over each tile in the stencil. To ensure sharp edges, use the paintbrush to smooth the paint, swiping from the tile edge toward the center (this prevents paint from seeping underneath the stencil). Remove and clean the stencil with a dry paper towel. 5 Allow the paint to set (1 to 2 minutes), then move the stencil to a new section (make sure at least one row overlaps with the previous section) and repeat Step 4.
6 Repeat Steps 4 and 5 to stencil the rest of the inside of the tray, then move to the outside walls and finish with the inside walls. To complete the pattern along the borders, cut the stencil along one side so that a row of the tiles is halved. 7 Once the tray is completely dry (about 2 hours), carefully remove the masking tape border. Paint a thin coat of iridescent medium over the entire tray to add a warm shimmer; let dry before use.

To update the look of a desk or dresser, follow these steps: Remove the handle, then cut a strip of leather trim (available at craft stores) that’s 1" wide and 1" longer than the original handle (for slack). Use a pen to mark a dot about ½" in from each end of the leather strip. On a block of wood, use a hammer and nail to pierce the dots to make holes. Attach your new handle using brass bolts and nuts and washers (available at hardware stores).

“Sebum production slows down with age and causes your skin and hair to dry out,” says Francesca Fusco, MD, a New York City dermatologist and scalp expert. Also contributing to dryness: the use of heated styling tools and chemically altering your color. The fix? “Follow each shampoo with a golf ball–size amount of hydrating conditioner and apply from your scalp down to your ends,” says Dr. Fusco. The skin on your scalp also needs hydration to stay healthy and maintain an optimum environment for hair follicles to thrive.
Brighten dullness Each strand has a cuticle layer that acts like shingles on a roof—a textured outer layer that protects your hair. But if your hair is dry or damaged, the layers can peel back or lift, which means it will look dull and lack shine. “To help increase your hair’s radiance, eat foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids like salmon,” says Howard Sobel, MD, a New York City dermatologist and the founder of DDF skincare. When it comes to styling, prep your damp hair with a lightweight serum that contains ingredients like avocado oil to add moisture, fight frizz and smooth down the cuticle layers.

Gorgeous Skin
OVERNIGHT
Seven or eight hours of sleep is optimal, because skin cells turn over much faster as you rest. But if you can’t get that much shut-eye, these little cheats will make sure you’re bright-eyed and radiant by morning.
AT NIGHT
1
2
DO A QUICK WASH
Cleanse your skin before bed to remove dirt and oil that can clog pores and dull your complexion. If you’re too tired to scrub and rinse, try a wipe, like Pixi by Petra Makeup Melting Cleansing Cloths ($10; target.com).
SOAK AWAY STRESS
Begin to wind down an hour before bed with a 15-minute bath. Two scoops of Kneipp Valerian & Hops Sweet Dreams Mineral Bath Salt ($20; kneippus .com) in a warm tub will relax your tired muscles and relieve tension.
PREVENT WRINKLES Use a silk pillowcase to avoid facial creases.
Day lotions are typically lightweight and often contain SPF, which you don’t need while sleeping. Plus, they tend to have fewer active ingredients since UV rays can break them down. Take advantage of richer skincare products formulated for night, like Laneige Firming Sleeping Mask ($30; at Target stores). It contains high levels of active agefighting ingredients like peptides, which have all evening to work their magic plumping and firming your skin.

COMBAT CIRCLES WHILE YOU SLEEP
Thick eye creams can interfere with makeup during the day, so save them for night, which is also the ideal time to address crow’s-feet. One to try: L’Oréal Paris Age Perfect Eye Renewal ($24.99; at drugstores). Smooth on a pea-size amount in small circular motions around your eye area until the cream is absorbed.

DE-PUFF—FAST
Fluid pools along your eye area while you sleep, especially if you’ve had salty foods or alcohol the night before. To quickly soothe your eyes, grab a pair of Skyn Iceland Hydro Cool Firming Eye Gels (8 pairs, $30; ulta.com). They’re formulated with ginkgo biloba leaf extract to dilate blood vessels, improve blood flow and reduce puffiness in just 10 minutes.
2
BRIGHTEN DARK CIRCLES
The skin around your eyes is thin, so capillaries and veins are easy to spot. Plus, as you age, slower collagen production means thinner undereye skin, showcasing darkness. Instantly light up your eyes with Smashbox Photo Op Under Eye Brightener ($20; sephora.com). One swipe hydrates and conceals circles. It also contains peptides and collagen to minimize the look of fine lines.
HAS SPF 3 0, TOO!
WAKE UP HAPPIER
A night of bad sleep can increase the stress hormone cortisol, resulting in deeper-looking wrinkles. To hydrate and smooth your complexion, try Maybelline New York Face Studio Master Prime in Blur and Illuminate ($9.99; at drugstores). Apply before foundation to give your face an instant pick-me-up.

A new Journal of the American Medical Association study found that when bystanders give CPR to sudden cardiac arrest victims, survival rates are two times higher than if they wait for EMTs. Master this easy method so you’ll be prepared. STEP 1: Call 911 and put the phone on speaker.

As you age, you tend to take more medications, which can interact with aspirin and increase the risk of bleeding. Speak with your physician about your situation.
40s
There’s little proof that an aspirin every day prevents heart attacks and stroke. It might even hurt you, as it’s linked to upset stomachs and gastrointestinal bleeding.
50s
If you’re at high risk for heart disease, you may want to talk to your doctor about starting a daily aspirin routine. (Over time, it stops plaques from becoming arteryblocking clots.)

PRIORITIES
U
Paula Rice, 63 New York City
Paula is a volunteer for the American Hear t Association’s Go Red for Women campaign .
ntil 2000, I was an independent business owner. But when my mom developed dementia and came to live with me, that changed. My days became consumed with caregiving: doctor visits, pharmacy runs and insurance calls.
Losing myself
COURTESY OF AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION’S GO RED FOR WOMEN.
Watching my mother deteriorate was physically, emotionally and financially draining. I had no time for exercise, lost my business and spent my pension fund caring for her. She passed away in 2008, and I ignored my health as I rebuilt my life. (I eventually got a job at the Alzheimer’s Association.)
Tipping point
In winter 2012, after a week of flulike symptoms—diarrhea, shortness of breath and fatigue— a concerned friend suggested I go to the ER. The doctor said that my heart rate was dangerously high and admitted me for testing. That night, I went into cardiac arrest and my heart stopped for 15 minutes. Eventually, doctors were able to get my heart back into a healthy rhythm, and I had a procedure called an ablation to correct the structural problems.
Taking back my life
I realized it was time to re-prioritize. I started doing walking meditation, practicing yoga and eating more oatmeal, fish, chicken, fruits and veggies. I became proactive about my healthcare, paying close attention to my numbers. I monitor my blood pressure at home and never miss a checkup or biannual cardiologist visit. I also insist on in-person appointments to discuss test results, which gives me a more thorough snapshot of my health and a strong sense of empowerment.
Challenges shouldn’t stop you from focusing on your health. At the very least schedule a well-woman visit, which is covered by most insurance plans, thanks to the Affordable Care Act.” FFFFFFFFF

y older sister had a heart attack in 2005, when she was just 34. I was 235 pounds and scared of the same fate, so I lost 70 pounds through diet and exercise. I kept it off for a few years; I thought my heart was in the clear.
Confusing diagnosis
In April 2013, I woke up with a headache and started sweating profusely later in the day. I also felt weak and chilled. At the hospital, I was diagnosed with pneumonia and sent home. A week later, at a checkup, the doctor read the
results of a blood panel and referred me to a cardiologist. Further tests revealed evidence of a recent heart attack, and I had a complete blockage in one of my arteries. My heart was working at 50% capacity. I left the hospital with two stents and a defibrillator. I was 33.
New meal mindset
Looking back, many of my seemingly healthy choices were flawed. The lean protein I ate (like deli turkey) was packed with sodium. Now I make healthier replacements for my Southern family’s heavy favorites, like turkey burgers seasoned with diced onions and a bit of ranch dressing mix. Instead of pie, I mix chopped apples with a touch of brown sugar and cinnamon, then top with an oatmeal and nut crumble.

Reality check
One night in 2009, I felt pressure, then pain, in my chest. I was having a massive “widow-maker” heart attack. In the hospital, surgery complications deprived my heart of oxygen and I lost almost half the pumping power.
Divine sign
I stopped smoking, eliminated salt and cut down on my work hours. At my four-month follow-up, my doctor said, “Your heart isn’t recovering. You need to seriously rethink your job.” Soon after giving my notice, I saw an ad for a part-time secretary at my church. I now do low-key tasks like greet visitors and light accounting. It leaves me time for walking, biking and heart-healthy cooking. And I have reconnected with my faith, perhaps the biggest bonus of all.

FEEL GOOD
EVERY DAY Solutions for a healthy heart
Heart Disease Heart disease refers to any condition of the heart that impairs its functioning, such as coronary artery disease, heart rhythm problems (arrhythmia), and heart defects you’re born with, among others. Common symptoms include chest pain, shortness of breath, lightheadedness, fatigue, and irregular heartbeat. SOLUTION Begin a healthy heart regimen to help prevent heart disease. Over-the-counter products like low-dose aspirin can help repel the plaque clumping in your arteries, which is a common cause of cardiovascular disease.* Other over-the-counter products, such as fish oil/krill oil/CoQ-10 supplements, can help reduce the risk of serious heart complications. Fish and krill oils contain omega-3 fatty acids, which can help lower blood pressure, reduce triglycerides and arrhythmias, and slow the development of plaque in your arteries. Taking CoQ-10 may be another way to help keep your body healthy. It functions as an antioxidant and may help protect your body from damage caused by harmful molecules. CoQ-10 may also help with heart failure, cancer, muscular dystrophy, and periodontal disease.†
WHY IS MAINTAINING YOUR HEART HEALTH IMPORTANT? Your heart is a vital organ at the center of your cardiovascular system. When your heart health is compromised, so are your everyday cardiovascular functions.
Dietary changes can also make an impact—staying within a reasonable daily calorie limit, using proper serving sizes, getting plenty of fiber, and cutting back on certain foods, such as red meat and sugar. Keeping your heart healthy and strong also requires regular exercise, like walking, jogging, swimming, and biking. Additional lifestyle changes include quitting smoking, lowering high blood pressure, and managing your stress and depression.
High Blood Pressure Blood pressure is determined by the amount of blood your heart pumps compared with the amount of resistance of blood flow to your arteries. When your blood pressure is too high, you may face heart health concerns that can lead to serious complications such as heart attack, stroke, or kidney failure. SOLUTION Keep track of your blood pressure with an at-home blood pressure monitor that delivers personalized, accurate, and comfortable measurement. If you have high blood pressure, lifestyle changes can help make an impact. Exercising regularly and eating a healthy diet by limiting fatty foods and reducing your sodium intake can help improve your heart health. If you continue to have high blood pressure, consult your healthcare professional about treatment options.
blood pressure levels Normal <120 and <80 Prehypertension 120–139 or 80–89 Hypertension, Stage 1 140–159 or 90–99 Hypertension, Stage 2 >160 or >100

Eventually I felt comfortable enough to go to the gym, where I started using the elliptical machine as well. I lost 75 pounds over the course of a year and a half. Now I strength-train three days a week and do five-mile walk-run workouts one or two days a week. I’ll pick a post, jog to it, then walk to the next landmark.” E A T - R I G H T T I P “Pasta is my trigger food, so I use a Spiralizer to make zucchini noodles, which I toss with olive oil, shrimp and red pepper flakes.”
“In April 2010, I walked the Crescent City Classic 10K in New Orleans with my aunt and my mom. We finished, but it was tough and by the end, my back really hurt. Five years later and 90 lbs down, I signed up again with my mom. I wanted to retrace my steps and redefine my path. The joy I felt as I crossed the finish line was overwhelming.”

I’ve kept off the weight for nine years, and today, I still walk about two miles, three days a week.” E A T - R I G H T T I P “If my plate looks empty, it’s hard for me to feel full. Why red meat and eggs are OK Experts used to think that eating foods rich in dietary cholesterol boosted cholesterol levels in the blood. But recent research finds that eating excessive saturated fat, not cholesterol, may be the true cause of high blood cholesterol. So, as long as you control portion sizes and choose lean cuts of beef (like sirloin), you can still dig into the occasional steak. And because the cholesterol in eggs is no longer as much of a concern, an egg a day is fair game too.

HOW THE PLAN WORKS
Pick any breakfast, lunch and dinner, plus two snacks a day. Mix and match—there are thousands of possible combinations.
BREAKFAST Spicy veggie sauté
Sauté 2 cups mixed greens (like spinach, kale or chard) + a pinch of crushed red pepper flakes in 1 tsp olive oil over medium-low heat until wilted. Top with 1 poached egg. Eat with 1 slice whole-wheat toast + 2 kiwis.
Banana-stuffed French toast
Toss ½ sliced banana with 1 tsp brown sugar + ¼ tsp cinnamon. Spread the banana mixture over 1 slice whole-wheat bread. Top with a second slice of whole-wheat bread and press together to make a sandwich. Dip both sides of the sandwich into 1 beaten egg. Heat 1 tsp unsalted butter in a small sauté pan over medium heat. Add the sandwich and cook 4 to 5 minutes or until golden brown on both sides, flipping halfway through.
Raspberry waffle sundae Top 1 toasted multigrain waffle with ½ cup nonfat ricotta. Combine 1 cup fresh (or thawed frozen) raspberries + 1 tsp sugar. Microwave on high for 30 to 45 seconds; pour over the waffle. Top with 1 Tbsp chopped walnuts. Hot breakfast apple
Combine 1 Tbsp raisins + ¼ tsp cinnamon + 1 tsp brown sugar. Spoon into a cored apple. Place in a microwave-safe dish and add ¼ cup water to the bottom of dish. Cover and microwave on high for 4 minutes. Let cool slightly, then spoon any cooking liquid over the apple. Top with 1 cup plain nonfat Greek yogurt + 1 Tbsp chopped pecans.
Open-faced avocado sandwich
Arrange ¼ sliced avocado on 2 toasted whole-grain English muffin halves. Top each half with 1 sliced radish. Eat with 1 orange.
Tomato baked eggs
In a 1-cup ramekin coated with cooking spray, combine ¼ cup lowsodium marinara + a pinch of cumin. Add 1 egg, cover with a paper towel and microwave on high for 2 to 2½ minutes. Serve over 2 warmed corn tortillas. Eat with ½ grapefruit.
Pumpkin–chocolate chip oatmeal Cook ½ cup rolled oats in ½ cup nonfat milk + ½ cup water. Stir in ¼ cup pumpkin purée + ¼ tsp cinnamon + 1 tsp maple syrup + 1 Tbsp mini chocolate chips.

hink being heart-healthy means giving up all of your favorite dishes? Not anymore. The latest research reveals that you can still eat certain foods. Steak? Yes! Cheese? Go ahead. Eggs? Definitely! The key is enjoying them in the right amounts and along with good-for-you picks. This plan is rich in nutrients like fiber and potassium, yet low in the saturated fat and sodium that may increase cholesterol and blood pressure. Enjoy!

Young at heart It turns out that your chronological age and your heart age may be completely different. According to new research from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, your heart’s age is determined by factors such as blood pressure, cholesterol, whether or not you smoke or have diabetes, plus your weight and exercise habits. So, a 50-year-old obese woman with diabetes and high blood pressure might have a ticker age of 85. Check out cdc.gov/vitalsigns /heartage to find out your heart age and to learn ways you can immediately start to lower it.

What Your Heartbeat Is Telling You
If your heart suddenly races or skips, don’t ignore it. Here, what to do the next time your ticker acts up. B Y K A R E N A S P
KNOW THE SIGNS
Recognizing what’s normal—or not—will help you stay safe.
A skipped or extra heartbeat
Racing, flipflopping or fluttering sensations
WHAT IT MEANS
TAKE ACTION
The heart can get its wires crossed, sending out an early cue to pump. If your ticker hasn’t had the chance to fill with blood, you’ll feel a pause followed by a strong beat. And if it did fill before the premature signal, you may notice an extra thud or thump.
If this happens just once, it’s likely due to a minor issue, like too much caffeine, dehydration or lack of sleep. But if the sensations last for more than 20 minutes and/or come with shortness of breath, talk to your doctor—it could be an irregular heartbeat that needs to be monitored.
A faster heartbeat or palpitations may point to tachycardia, which is when your heart rate exceeds 100 beats per minute. The condition is triggered by a number of factors, such as low blood pressure and thyroid disease, and could lead to problems like blood clots.
Your heart rate speeds up naturally during a brisk walk, but if it’s racing for no particular reason or comes with difficulty breathing, light-headedness or chest pain, call 911. Certain forms of tachycardia, including atrial fibrillation, increase stroke risk.
FE E LING DIZZ Y ?
It’s not common, but you may be experiencing an unusually slow heartbeat (bradycardia) and not know it. You won’t feel any symptoms in your chest—instead, be on the lookout for fatigue, weakness and dizziness, all of which happen when there’s not enough blood flowing to the brain. If the dizziness is severe or if you’re having trouble detecting a pulse, go to the ER. Otherwise, see your doctor to rule out issues like hypothyroidism. (If the heart has been damaged or if the slow heart rate is persistent, a pacemaker may be necessary.)

FOUR PICKS YOU SHOULD CONSUME DAILY...
Bananas A super source of potassium, bananas help counter the effects of blood pressure–raising sodium. Adults need about 4,700 mg (or 4.7 g) of potassium daily, and a medium banana provides about 12%. Add a banana to breakfast or slice one up into several ½-in. rounds, place them in a plastic bag RX: and freeze for an evening treat.

Beans
1
CUP A DAY
Beans are rich in fiber, magnesium and potassium, all of which help maintain healthy blood pressure levels. People who consumed 1 cup of beans and other legumes daily saw a drop in blood pressure, says a study in the JAMA Internal Medicine journal. Toss black, white, kidney or pinto beans into salads, soups and wraps.

Cocoa powder
TBSP A DAY
An Australian study suggests that foods containing cocoa can help reduce blood pressure because the flavonols may improve blood vessel function. Harvard researchers also found that dark chocolate helped lower blood pressure for people with hypertension. Chocolate is high in calories, so stick to a small square or add 1 Tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder (12 calories) to your coffee.

Lowfat milk or yogurt People who consumed lowfat dairy—which contains similar levels of calcium and vitamin D as full-fat versions—each day had an 11% decreased risk of high blood pressure compared with those who consumed none, according to a study in the journal Hypertension. Start your day with cereal and 1% milk, eat plain lowfat yogurt with fruit or whip up a yogurt smoothie as a snack.
CAN’T EAT DAIRY?
Soy milk and almond milk are fortified with calcium and vitamin D. Plus, almond milk is low in calories (30 to 40 per 8 oz).
...AND ONE YOU SHOULD EAT A FEW TIMES A WEEK
The lowly potato has gotten a bad rap because of its starchy makeup, but the spud is no dud. Rich in potassium and magnesium (which helps with normal blood flow), a medium potato is portion-controlled at 160 calories. White, sweet or purple all offer blood pressure benefits. Eat them baked, boiled or roasted.

Yes, You CAN Retire!
FROM TOP: GETTY IMAGES; COURTESY OF RAMSEY SOLUTIONS.
Financial coach and retirement expert Chris Hogan—part of Dave Ramsey’s team of experts—helps you get on track.
Retirement. If you’re like a lot of people, the very word gives you the shivers. But fear doesn’t create energy, and it doesn’t cause lasting change. That’s why I prefer to talk about inspiration. I’d like you to begin thinking about retirement as the part of your story when your dreams come true. Below are just a few of the ideas I talk about with the people I coach, which can help you make your dreams a reality, even if you’re only starting to think them through.
1
CAST A VISION
Many people dream about their retirement, which is great. The problem is, most never change their behaviors. They just hope for the best. That’s a wish, and a wish requires no
So I want you to think for a moment about how good it would feel to retire and do the things you have always dreamed of doing. What is that one thing that would make you wake up every day and think, I get to do this? Are you relaxing at the lake? Doing mission work? Traveling the world? Now consider what you are willing to do to get to that place. What are you willing to sacrifice to make your dreams come true? Think hard about what it would take. That will be the foundation of your plan.
2
SAVE $5 A DAY
follow-through, no discipline and no action on your part at all. Wishes are as good as giving up! You need to take personal responsibility for your retirement, and that means having a vision and a plan to achieve it.
Five bucks is what you spend on snacks at work. Saving $5 a day during the workweek can add up to $100 a month! So what would a $100-a-month investment mean for you? Just as an example, if you used a 10% rate of return,

REMEMBER THAT WANTS ARE NOT NEEDS
Take a new car, for example. That’s something that most Americans can identify with. If you’re thinking of financing a car and making a $500 monthly payment, consider what would happen if instead you save up for a functional if not fancy car, paid for it in cash and then made a $500 monthly contribution to your retirement plan. Ten years later, if you chose the car payment, you would have lost the earning potential of tens of thousands of dollars, and the car (if you still had it) would need to be replaced. But if you had invested the money with a 10% annual return, you’d be sitting on $105,000 or more after those same 10 years! By choosing the car, you’re choosing not to have $105,000 in 10 years. I can’t imagine choosing not to have $105,000. It is easy for people to get so caught up in their wants that they are able to convince themselves that those wants are needs. You can always find a way to rationalize that new car as a need. But is it really? And is what you might have done with that extra money perhaps a better investment in your retirement dreams?

If they offer a Roth 401(k), which grows tax-free, you can just invest your whole 15% there. Done! If they don’t have a Roth option, then invest only up to the match. Then, put the rest in a nonemployer Roth IRA. So, for example, if your company matches up to 3%, put your first 3% in the company plan, then put the remaining 12% into a Roth IRA. If your company doesn’t have a 401(k), put 15% in a Roth IRA.

DON’T GIVE UP
I’ve talked with hundreds of people who realized pretty late in the game that they needed to do something for retirement. But you know what? There are still things most people can do. I met a lady in Denver who was in her late 60s. Her age and health told her it was time to retire, but she hadn’t saved at all. She had, however, stayed allergic to debt and paid off her home. After we talked, she began to view her paidoff house as a financial resource. There was sacrifice involved: She would have to give up the place where she raised her kids. She would have to find a reasonable house to rent, and she’d probably rent for the rest of her life. However, her home was worth more than $400,000, and that decision would enable her to fund the retirement that she wanted.
She wrote me a three-page thankyou letter, but all I had done was to help her see her home as a resource. I strongly recommend speaking with a financial professional who can point out things that might not be apparent to you.

DON’T COLLECT SOCIAL SECURITY UNTIL AT LEAST AGE 67 (BUT TRY TO WAIT UNTIL 70) I don’t want you to count on social security as your only source of income, but it can be an awesome blessing—if you use it the right way. You can start drawing on it as early as age 62, but here’s the thing: The earlier you start, the less money you bring home for the rest of your life. If you were born in 1960 or later and start receiving benefits at 62, you would only receive 70% of your full benefits. That means you’d be intentionally giving up 30% of your social security income. That’s a bad plan, because the rate at which you begin collecting your benefits is where it stays—it doesn’t start at 70% and pop up to 100% later. If you have saved enough to live on, wait until you’re at least 67 so you can collect 100%. But unless you will absolutely depend on those benefits, hold off until 70. Why? If you are able to wait, it would increase your payout to a maximum of 124%! Did you catch that? 124% of your benefit sounds like free money to me, and I like free money. you could have more than $75,000 after 20 years! If you stuck to this plan for 30 years, you would have more than $200,000! After 40 years of saving that little bit of pocket change a day, you could end up with $600,000! Doesn’t that sound possible?

WEIGHT LOSS UPDATE:
Super-Powerful “Diet Pills” Make Comeback They’re flying off the shelf... But they’re NOT for everyone!
M
ost of us thought the era of the “Super-Powerful” diet pill ended a few years back when the FDA removed Ephedra and Fen-Phen from the U.S. market because of safety concerns. Well, it turns out that Òmost of usÓ were wrong. It seems that a huge, multibillion-dollar, “underground” market for these amphetamine-like fat burners sprung up even before the ink was dry on the FDA’s decree. But recently, an entirely new crop of high-quality, super-powerful and super-effective diet pills are coming out of hiding and are hitting the shelves of your local GNC. The current leader in this new category is a product called BiphedAdrene,® developed and sold by Generix Labs, LLC. The company tells us that BiphedAdrene is a two-part system comprised of a unique “Complex Phenylethylamine Provisional” (for powerful appetite control, mood elevation, and energy) combined with an aggressive thermogenic compound (for fat burning and stamina). This two-pronged attack on fat is apparently what makes the compound so effective... and so popular.
While the pills do cause rapid weight loss (no doubt about that), these amphetamine-like compounds are fast becoming a favorite among bodybuilders, college students, and overstressed, exhausted homemakers for their energy and stamina-boosting properties (in other words as powerful “go-fast” pills). Because cult-like trends that begin with bodybuilders and college students quickly become mainstream, many BiphedAdrene (or BiPhed for short) critics are concerned about the overuse of these powerful compounds.
While the pills do cause rapid weight loss (no doubt about that), their reputation asÒMotherÕs Little HelpersÓ seems to be the driving force behind their extraordinary appeal. A spokesperson for Generix Labs explains, “One of the things we often heard, as we made a study of the weight-loss market, is that people missed the mood elevation and boost of energy that were ‘side-effects,’ if you will, of the Fen-Phen and Ephedra class of diet pills. The weight loss was always primary, but nearly as
important was the increase in energy and mood. These new non-amphetamine compounds provide not only very substantial weight loss, but also a similar mood and energy boost.” While these Òsuper pillsÓ are finding their way into the general marketplace, they are definitely not for everyone. In fact, you shouldn’t even think about taking them if
losing five or six “vanity pounds” is your goal. These diet pills are intended exclusively for the significantly overweight. But that’s not the only caveat. You should check with your doctor to ensure you are in overall good health before considering any of this new category of pills. LetÕs face it... even though this new generation of diet pills, such as BiphedAdrene, aggressively proposes “easy” weight loss, increased energy, and improved mood, they are expensive ($135 for a 30-day supply) and need to be used very responsibly. See you in the supplement section!

Calming tricks and boredom busters to entertain your animals while you’re away. BY GILLI A N A LDR ICH
1
SCHEDULE PLAYTIME
When a pet can count on regular physical activity, he’s less likely to chew out of boredom when you’re out. Most dogs and cats are wired to be active at sunrise and twilight, so plan a good walk or 20 to 30 minutes of playtime with your pet before heading out.
2
SEND THEM ON A HUNT
Instead of letting your furball inhale food, have her forage for it. Start by placing meals or treats in the cups of a muffin pan. As her skills grow, use store-bought puzzle feeders to engage her mind and occupy more alone time.
3
CREATE A RELAXING SPACE
Does the arrival of the mailman get your dog riled up? Help him relax his guard by setting up his bed and toys in an area with no view of the front door. Cats feel safest on a high perch, so make a windowsill or shelf accessible to her while you’re away.
{Ask a veterinarian}
Q
“Is it true that my fireplace can be harmful to my birds?”
A
Fires are indeed a hazard, as is anything that produce s fumes, smoke or other aromatic compounds; they can overwhelm a bird’s tiny lungs and result in death. If you smell smoke, assume that the bird is inhaling fumes, too. Protect your bird by moving him to a different room if you do make a fire. Also, verify that your fireplace is vented; use dry hardwood, as young or wet wood creates more smoke; and avoid tarproducing wood, such as pine. Kerosene heaters and appliances or cookware that have a nonstick coating give off toxic fumes when heated, and may need to be avoided. (Look for PTFE- and PFOAfree on the packaging.) Ask your vet about other risks, such as scented candles, potpourri and plug-in air fresheners. SOURCE: Dr. Samuel B. Mosaic numbers WHAT YOU’LL NEED
1 Wearing protective eyewear and gloves, cover your teacups and saucers with a towel to minimize flyaway ceramic bits, then smash with the hammer. 2 Use the palette knife to spread the thin-set on the back of a ceramic piece or in a small area on a wood number. Working in sections, cover the front of the number with the ceramic pieces, leaving no more than a ⅛" gap between each piece. 3 Spread thin-set between the tiles (until it’s level with surface) and around the sides of the numbers. Dampen the sponge and remove excess quickly, so it doesn’t set. Let set for 25 minutes. 4 Run sandpaper over the sides of the numbers to smooth out the grout. Wipe the entire number with a damp rag to remove excess dust and residue. 5 Once the grout has cured for 72 hours, spray with the grout sealer, following bottle instructions.
NOTE: Numbers are not suitable for extreme cold because as they swell, the contraction of the wood will cause the mosaic to crack.
