A YEAR’S WORTH OF GROCERIES!
Attention, shoppers! Dinner (and lunch and breakfast) is on us. Go to womansday.com/groceries for a chance to win food for your family for one year, courtesy of Woman’s Day. See page 138 for details.

I
bet you remember at least one first day of school: the anticipation combined with butterflies and a twinge of sadness at vacation’s end. You probably felt pretty cool in your new outfit—and if, like me, you had grown 2 inches over the summer, perhaps a little ungainly. Growth spurts aside, the start of the school year is all about possibility—and reinvention. A WD staffer told me she sat her middle school–bound twin daughters down and asked them, “What kind of person do you want to be?” Her message: Your actions toward others define who you are, now and in the future. WD’s popular Kindness Project column often features kids who have learned that lesson and are teaching us all about generosity. (On page 17, read about Colton Rodman, 14, who gives out kits full of necessities to the homeless.) These kids can grow up to be people like Tony Robbins, the motivational speaker profiled on page 34. Food-insecure as a child, Tony now donates 20 meals to Feeding America for every person who attends one of his seminars. Or Heather Miller, a reader I met in Texas this spring, who founded a baseball league for kids with disabilities after her own son couldn’t play. Or, closer to home, executive editor Annemarie Conte, who ran a diaper drive for her local chapter of Mothers and More this spring that netted 7,700 diapers for low-income families. What kind of person do you want to be? This lesson on humanity is perfect for kids this time of year, and for us grownups as well.

Your dog shares the spirit of the wolf. And his love for meat.
BLUE Wilderness® is made with more of the chicken, duck or salmon dogs love. All dogs are descendants of the wolf, which means they share many similar traits – including a love for meat. That’s why we created BLUE Wilderness. Made with the finest natural ingredients, BLUE Wilderness is formulated with a higher concentration of the chicken, duck or salmon dogs love. And BLUE Wilderness has none of the grains that contain gluten. If you want your dog to enjoy a meat-rich diet like his ancestors once did, there’s nothing better than BLUE Wilderness.

My family and I donate bins full of cell phone chargers to two Chicago hospitals. When a loved one is in the hospital, a cell phone is a very important connection to family and friends. This helps ensure that the focus can be on the patient, not on battery life. STACEY BALKANSKY, Chicago

After my friend Jan was diagnosed with Stage IV cancer in 2013, I would occasionally prepare meals for her and her husband. Then came a reverse act of kindness: Jan was an accomplished quilter, and when she heard I was about to welcome a great-granddaughter that summer, she made a quilt for me to give to the baby. I was so delighted. This was the last quilt she ever made because she died the following spring. I will be forever grateful for her kind act. CAROL PINKOWSKI, North Chatham, NY

CLI NTO N Solves It!
Clinton Makes Over...
CLINTON KELLY
Your Bed
It’s the first thing you see in the morning and the last thing you see at night, so your bed should make you happy. Does yours? If the answer is anything but “OMG! Yes! I LOVE my bed!” then use the change in seasons to turn it into the thing sweet dreams are made of.
1
Between the sheets
Invest in a set of sheets in a rich jewel or autumnal color that flatters your skin tone. You should look good in what you sleep on, too! Then, try rolling back the blankets a few inches so you can see the top sheet underneath. That looks fancy, like you’re at a posh European hotel.
WD PICK
Check out the Great Value Award sheet set on page 68.
2
Pillow talk
Here’s the thing: You should’ve tossed your old pillows five years ago. They’re lumpy and full of oils, dust and mites. (Gross.) Swap them for new ones, then pick out pillowcases in a color or pattern that coordinates with your new sheets. Voilà, a gorgeous, simple look. No more arguments about who has to move 10 frilly pillows on and off the bed.
3
Covering up
Me, I like a duvet. The cover can be removed and washed in your regular washing machine (rather than dragging your comforter to the Laundromat). Plus, you can put on a new cover when you feel like mixing it up. If you already have something you love, layer on a throw for an easy style upgrade (see below for how to choose the perfect one).
THROW ON A NEW LOOK
Build on the bedding you already have to instantly refresh your bed and make it more comfy. If you have… A solid duvet
A printed duvet or comforter
A printed duvet in an understated or neutral print and want more drama
Then add… A printed throw in a bold pattern like chevron or ikat
A solid throw in a complementary color or rich texture
A printed throw in a color found in your duvet

Put an end to a drippy sink with this quick fix: Unscrew the aerator, wrap a thin strip of wax paper around the exposed threading, then replace the aerator. This will help fill the gaps on the thread and stop water from leaking through the connection.
Wax paper is microwavesafe! It allows moisture to escape so your food doesn’t come out soggy. 28

Revive your can opener
Fold a small sheet of wax paper in half, then place it between the blades of a can opener and crank the handle a few times. The wax lubricates the blades so they’ll glide along the edge of a can.
Stop a leaky faucet
DID YOU KNOW?

Preserve paint Float a wax paper circle directly on opened paint before you replace the lid. This prevents a thick layer of paint from forming on top, which can cause chunks (and an uneven finish) when mixed back in.

If you’ve accidentally spilled water on a book, separate the damaged pages with pieces of wax paper, then close the book. As it dries, the wax paper wicks away moisture and prevents wrinkles.
Keep kitchen and bathroom fixtures shiny by rubbing them with wax paper. The wax will repel water and oil so you’re not left with spots or fingerprints.

FIGHTS HUNGER
I HAD NO MONEY FOR FOOD
On any given day, millions of Americans don’t know how they’re going to put their next meal on the table. In fact, in 2013, more than 49 million in the U.S. lived in food-insecure households, and the stigma can make it hard to ask for help. That’s why these three success stories are opening up about their lean years, and how they are helping the hungry. B Y L E S L I E G O L DM A N PHOTOGR A PHED BY C E DR IC A N G E L E S

mily Scott, 26, is a short track speed skater living in West Jordan, UT. Her dream of representing her country in the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics nearly crashed and burned when her training stipend was drastically cut, making it hard for her to pay for food. “For an Olympic athlete, proper nutrition is especially important. For one year, I received a $1,950 monthly stipend, which allowed me to buy wholesome food like salmon, vegetables and quinoa, as well as cover my rent and other necessities while I was in training. Then, in June of 2013, I received an email from the U.S. speed skating governing body notifying me that my allowance was being slashed to just $600 a month. I fell into a complete panic—how could I prepare for the Games, which

After 8-hour training days, I’d spend 5 hours sticking labels on machines. I was exhausted, and still wasn’t earning enough to support myself. That was a definite low point. I felt embarrassed to ask for help, and defeated. I didn’t know how I’d be able to compete. Lucky for me, USA Today ran a story about my predicament, and incredibly generous people donated

money to support me during my training. Because of this I was able to go to Sochi and advance to the 1500m finals. If that hadn’t happened, I would have had to go on food stamps. That’s why I donate my time in support of Feeding America’s Stamp Out Hunger program,
which allows people to leave bags of nonperishable food on their doorsteps for mail carriers to deliver to food banks and other hunger-relief organizations. As an athlete, I benefited from the generosity of strangers. I think everyone deserves help when they need it.”

T
ony Robbins, 55, is a New York Times bestselling author, life coach and motivational speaker based in Palm Beach, FL. After growing up in a household where food was often scarce, he went on to make the largest donation from an individual ever to Feeding America, which goes toward providing 100 million meals to hungry Americans. “I was a kid, and my alcoholic parents were fighting. My father, a metal tools salesman, lacked confidence in his ability to be a good provider, and my mom enjoyed making it clear that he wasn’t. It was Thanksgiving, and we had no dinner. I remember that there was a knock at the door, and I answered to find a tall man holding a box of food, an uncooked turkey in a roasting pan at his feet. I had no idea where it came from, but I was elated. But all my dad saw was a handout. ‘We don’t take charity,’ he barked, and went to shut the door. But the man stuck out his foot. ‘Someone wants you to have this,’ he said. ‘Don’t let your ego get in the way of taking care of your family.’ My father took the meal and slammed the door without thanking him. I cooked the turkey, and that night we ate like kings. My father left us a few days later. That experience taught me the power of a stranger’s concern, and it set off a ripple effect. When I was 17, I asked my local church for the names of two families in need. I had saved enough money from my janitorial job to buy groceries and deliver them anonymously. The next year, I fed four families. Then eight. As my career grew, so did

my ability to provide. Now, I donate 20 meals for every person who attends one of my speaking events via a local food bank. I know the joy of giving as both the recipient and the provider. You don’t have to be rich to buy someone a meal, to offer them comfort and sustenance. With $5 and a little creativity, you can fill a child’s belly and help a family feel human again. That Thanksgiving delivery changed my future, and turned the worst time of my life—my dad leaving— into the best time, because it taught me who I didn’t want to become…and who I did.”

But earlier in her life, Cathy knew what it was like to feel hungry. “My three siblings and I grew up in Omaha’s projects; our father was in college and our mother was a housewife, so we didn’t have much money. my age to get hired). The dinner my mom had set aside for me had been eaten by my brothers. They’d left the napkin puffed up on top of the plate to cover their tracks. I became pregnant at 16, and moved in with my soon-to-be husband’s family. My son, Alfred, was born in 1965, and my husband and I split up soon after. I put myself through college in Nebraska, and eventually took a job as a sales manager at Howard University’s radio station. In 1979, my second husband and I bought our own station and turned it into Washington, DC’s first blackperspective talk radio station. But three years later, we split up and I lost the house. Money was tight, and I worked constantly to keep the business alive. For 18 months, I slept on the radio station floor and cooked soup on a hot plate.
Now that I’m financially comfortable, I keep my pantry so stocked, you’d think I had 10 grandkids, not just one. I donate extras to homeless shelters and to seniors who often have to choose between food and medicine. No one should have to make that choice. At Radio One, we’ve fed thousands of people through donation drives and Thanksgiving turkey giveaways. It’s an incredible feeling to know that my child—and his child—have always had enough to eat. The cycle of hunger has been broken.” n

Treatment with fewer than three monthly doses after the last exposure to mosquitoes may not provide complete heartworm prevention. Prior to administration of Trifexis, dogs should be tested for existing heartworm infection. Use with caution in dogs with pre-existing epilepsy. The most common adverse reactions reported are vomiting, depression, and itching. To ensure heartworm prevention, observe your dog for one hour after administration. Cast a Warm Glow This pendant light project makes old crocheted doilies look radiant. ACTIVE TIME 35 MIN F COST $16.48
• Paper towels • Rubber gloves • Rit Liquid Fabric Dye ($3.99; joann.com) • Plastic bucket • Fabric doilies • Twine • Beach ball
• Petroleum jelly • Aleene’s Fabric Stiffener ($4.49; joann.com) • Scissors • Up to 60W LED lightbulb • Artecnica Cord Kit Textile ($25.50; lbcmodern.com) • Wire
1 First, protect your work table with paper towels and put on rubber gloves. Then, follow the package directions to mix a dye bath in the plastic bucket. 2 Submerge each doily in the dye bath for 10 to 30 seconds (note: the longer they soak, the deeper the color will be), then wring out and lay flat to dry (about 24 hours) on paper towels. Clean bucket. 3 Tie one end of a length of twine around the ball’s valve; tape the other end to the work table so the ball hangs just above the floor. Lay paper towels underneath to catch any drips. 4 Apply a thin coat of petroleum jelly to the inflated beach ball (this will keep the doilies from sticking). 5 Pour fabric stiffener into the bucket and dip in a doily, fully saturating the fibers. Squeeze excess stiffener into the bucket and position the doily on the beach ball. 6 Repeat with the remaining doilies, positioning them around the ball so they overlap slightly. Smooth down uplifted edges as you go. Cut a 3½" hole at the top. 7 Let the lantern dry completely (about 24 hours), then use scissors to remove the deflated beach ball through the hole. 8 Screw an LED bulb (which stays cool to the touch) into the cord set, then push it inside the lantern so the bulb is centered and at least 2½" away from all sides. Secure the cord set to the top of the lantern using wire, and suspend above a table.

I grew up in the age of sun worship, so I’m covered in spots. There’s a stubborn one on my cheek, nose and a few starting to appear on the back of my hand. My chest is a lost cause, there are so many! ProX by Olay Nightly Purifying Micro-Peel, $39.99; at drugstores
My initial thought… “It has glycolic acid, so apply with caution. Too much usually makes my skin flake.”
My experience… “I used it every morning under moisturizer and sunscreen instead of applying at night, which the label said was OK. In two weeks my skin was brighter. The product was a little tacky, but not a deal breaker.”
What I love… “It was supergentle and I could use it daily with no flaking at all!”

Try this at home Your skin’s cellular turnover slows down with age, causing your complexion to dull and make spots more noticeable. “The best thing you can do for your skin is to exfoliate at least three times a week,” says Michael Lin, MD, a Beverly Hills dermatologist. Use a product that contains a mix of alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) like lactic and glycolic acid to gently remove the top layer of your skin, which will even out discolorations.
Visit the dermatologist Ask for an intense pulsed light (IPL) treatment. “The laser breaks up the melanin, allowing spots to quickly diffuse and lighten up,” says Debra Jaliman, MD, a New York City dermatologist. However, IPL isn’t cheap. It costs between $300 to $500 per treatment, and most people need at least two treatments to see results.

ark spots appear on your skin because of sun exposure. The melanin in your skin overreacts to UV damage and pools together to create an age spot. As you get older, they get darker. But you can avoid future spots by wearing broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, every day. As for the visible ones, these solutions can help them fade away.

Place the sweet potatoes on a plate, cut-side down, and microwave on high until tender, 5 to 7 minutes. 2 Heat the oil and garlic in a large skillet over medium heat until the garlic just starts to sizzle. Stir in the cumin, cinnamon and cayenne, and cook for 30 seconds. 3 Add the beans and ⅓ cup water and cook, tossing occasionally, until heated through, about 2 minutes. Add the spinach and cook, tossing until just beginning to wilt, about 1 minute; remove from heat. 4 Place the tortillas on the prepared baking sheet. Scoop the sweet potato from the skins and spread on one half of each tortilla. Top with the bean mixture and cheese, then fold over the tortillas to cover the filling (they will look overstuffed). Broil until the top is golden brown and the cheese has melted, about 2 minutes. Serve with lime wedges and salsa, if desired. Line the casserole dish with foil, leaving a 3-in. overhang on two sides. Fill the dish with the prepared mixture and freeze until just firm. Using the overhangs, lift the casserole out of the dish in one piece. Wrap in plastic, then foil, and freeze for up to 2 months. When ready to cook, remove the plastic and foil and transfer back to the dish. Cover with foil and bake until heated through, 30 to 40 minutes. FFFFFFF

8 slices bacon 2 lbs medium russet potatoes (about 3), peeled and cut into sixths Kosher salt and pepper ¼ cup sour cream 2 Tbsp unsalted butter 3 cups cooked, shredded white-meat chicken (the breasts from 1 rotisserie chicken) 1 16-oz pkg frozen broccoli, thawed 4 scallions, thinly sliced ½ cup fresh flat-leaf parsley, roughly chopped 8 oz extra-sharp Cheddar, coarsely grated (about 2 cups) Green salad, for serving

Transfer to a paper towel–lined plate; break into pieces when cool. 2 Meanwhile, place the potatoes in a medium pot, cover with cold water and bring to a boil. Add 2 tsp salt, reduce heat and simmer until the potatoes are just tender, 13 to 15 minutes. Drain, transfer to a large bowl, add the sour cream and butter and roughly mash with a fork (leaving some chunks). 3 Add the chicken, broccoli, scallions, parsley, bacon, 1½ cups cheese, and ½ tsp each salt and pepper to the potatoes and mix to combine. Transfer to a shallow 2½-qt baking dish (or eight 6- to 8-oz ramekins). 4 Sprinkle the remaining ½ cup cheese over the top and bake until the cheese is melted and lightly golden brown, 20 to 25 minutes (about 15 minutes for ramekins). our pre-supermarket strategy: Munch on a piece of produce. Why? Research from Cornell University found that people who ate a small apple slice before grocery shopping bought 25% more fruits and vegetables than those who didn’t consume the fruit. Experts say a bite of something nutritious puts you in a healthy mindset, encouraging you to make better food purchases. So pack a snack in your purse—a few baby carrots or a handful of grapes—to nibble on before hitting the aisles.

Avoid these three morning mistakes to help get better rest at bedtime.
THE PROBLEM:
Lounging in bed to read or relax
If you’re already having trouble getting enough rest, staying under the covers can throw off your sleep-wake cycle. MORNING MAKEOVER:
As soon as the alarm sounds, get up and open the curtains. Movement and sunlight switch your brain to awake mode.
THE PROBLEM:
Too many cups of coffee at breakfast
It’s a vicious cycle: Too much caffeine can send you into withdrawal later in the day, causing you to reach for more java. And if you drink that last cup after 3 p.m., it may interfere with sleep. MORNING MAKEOVER:
Eat a high-protein meal for lasting energy and cap your coffee consumption at just two cups.

THE PROBLEM:
Forgetting to take your medication
Before you pop missed pills at dinner, know that certain meds and supplements, such as Prozac and vitamin B, are linked to disrupted rest if taken too late in the day. MORNING MAKEOVER:
Place the pills near your house keys so you can’t miss them.

Q A
Are the reading glasses sold at drugstores as good as prescription lenses?
The lower price tag is tempting, but it’s best to see your optometrist. First, choosing the wrong over-the-counter prescription can lead to headaches, eye strain and even nausea. More important, people tend to notice that menus and books become hard to read at a time when other eye issues start creeping up, so an appointment for glasses also gives you the chance to be checked for eye problems, like glaucoma, that may otherwise go undetected. START
Understand the industry
Unlike regulations for prescription or over-thecounter drugs, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) doesn’t require dietary supplement manufacturers to prove safety, efficacy (whether or not the product does what it says), purity or potency, says Lona Sandon, MEd, RDN, an assistant professor of clinical nutrition at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center
1
in Dallas. “They can be put on store shelves or sold on the Internet without prior testing or notification to the FDA.” In other words, the responsibility is on manufacturers to regulate themselves. What’s more, the level of testing that actually happens varies among companies, says Joyce Generali, RPh, a professor emeritus in the School of Pharmacy at the Kansas University Medical Center and a member of the Woman’s Day advisory board.
2
Know that supplements should enhance (not replace) healthy eating Supplements are meant to fill holes in an otherwise healthy diet, says Keri Gans, MS, RDN, a nutrition consultant in New York City and author of The Small Change Diet. For instance, it’s smart to take B12 if you’re a vegan or even a vegetarian, as the vitamin is mostly found in animal products. And your doctor may recommend calcium if you’re postmenopausal, particularly if you’re lactose-intolerant, because your body becomes less adept at absorbing the bonestrengthening mineral due to estrogen loss.
SMART SHOPPING TIPS Look for the USP symbol on the label. The process of earning the seal— from The U.S. Pharmacopeial Convention—is voluntary on the part of manufacturers, but it shows that a supplement contains what it claims to, is contaminant-free and breaks down in the body the way it should for optimal absorption. You can find a list of verified supplements at usp.org. Watch out for problematic products. To stay abreast of reports on product concerns, consult consumerlab.com. And check the FDA’s page on tainted supplements (go.usa.gov/3wKNH) to make sure your pick isn’t on the list of potentially harmful ones. Consider products that have been tested independently. NSF International is a nonprofit organization that runs a testing program for dietary supplements. It tests products in its own labs to confirm that the contents match what’s printed on the label. For a list of NSF-certified supplements, log on to nsf.org/certified/dietary.

T
he endless rows of bottles of capsules, pills and chews at your local drugstore can be overwhelming. Where do you even start? And how do you choose what’s best? It’s enough to send you running for the door. The bottom line: By choosing wisely—and working with your doctor—vitamins and supplements can be beneficial. Use this guide to stay informed and be well.
Supplement S LE UTH
While excessive amounts of some water-soluble vitamins (like B) will wash out in your urine, getting too much of other nutrients (like vitamin A) can be toxic to your liver. That’s why it’s important to look for formulas that provide no more than 100% of the recommended dietary intake. Keep in mind that you’re getting nutrients through food as well (but it’s impossible to get too much of a vitamin through diet). So you want to avoid supplements that claim to contain, for instance, 175% of the RDA for any given nutrient. Always read the back of the bottle, paying special attention to the numbers on the ingredients list.
>
FINISH
Tell your doctor about all the supplements you’re taking, even if you think they’re harmless Why? They can have problematic interactions with some medications. For example, taking vitamin E or fish oil along with medications that thin the blood (such as Coumadin or aspirin) could lead to persistent bleeding, bruising or even stroke. Ginkgo biloba can actually make certain antidepressants (such as SSRIs) less effective, and magnesium supplements may interfere with your body’s ability to absorb certain antibiotics. Besides helping you avoid dangerous interactions at home, your physician should also be on the lookout for symptoms that could be caused by supplements: If your doctor doesn’t know you’re taking something, she might mistakenly think unusual body changes are related to a health condition rather than a supplement’s side effect (like constipation from iron pills). Make a note to share all at your next appointment.

Matters of the Heart
Certain supplements may be beneficial for cardiovascular health, while others could be making false promises. Here, a look at how four picks stack up.
OK TO DISCUSS WITH YOUR DOC: NIACIN It can raise HDL (“good”) cholesterol and lower triglycerides in people whose levels of these lipids are out of whack, says Nieca Goldberg, MD, director of the Joan H. Tisch Center for Women’s Health at the NYU Langone Medical Center. Some physicians may recommend taking it in place of or in conjunction with other heart meds. RED YEAST RICE EXTRACT It may lower LDL (“bad”) cholesterol similar to the way statins do, but it can have the same side effects, Dr. Goldberg says. Slash Your Stroke Risk
High blood pressure affects one in three Americans, but bringing it down is easier than you think. B Y L I Z K R I E G E R
Y
ou may think of a stroke as just that—a stroke of bad luck. But in fact, many strokes (and heart attacks) are preventable if you modify one big risk factor: high blood pressure, or hypertension. Unlike other red flags such as obesity or smoking, high blood pressure is usually a silent issue. Since you don’t actually feel sick, it’s easy to shove aside the results of
the quick test. Here’s why you should pay attention: Your numbers are a reflection of how hard your heart has to work with each beat. If left untreated, high blood pressure can lead to stiffening of vessels and increased risk of plaque buildup. (A stroke happens when a piece of plaque ruptures, causing a blood clot to develop.) The higher your blood pressure, the greater your danger.
Reducing your blood pressure to an optimal level (see chart, below) can lengthen your life by at least one to three years. If you have extremely high numbers, starting on medication right away is standard, along with lifestyle changes. If your BP is only mildly elevated, you’ll likely be encouraged to alter your habits first. Try these research-backed methods:

START TODAY: Skip the bread in your sandwich and opt for a lettuce wrap. Many packaged breads are loaded with sodium, which adds up with each meal.
START TODAY: Stroll for at least 20 minutes, then check your calendar and pencil in the other times that you can squeeze in a walk this week.
START TODAY: Swap savory snacks for a piece of fruit and go to womansday.com /dash to download a guide from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute.
Trim the amount of salt in your diet, ideally to no more than the American Heart Association’s recommended 1,500 mg of sodium a day.
Increase your activity by walking daily. This will lower your blood pressure and help strengthen your heart over time.
Adopt the simple DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet program, which is rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lowfat dairy.

Success story
“Six years ago I weighed 218 pounds and had hypertension. My cardiologist said that if I stayed on this path, I’d die. Diet was the first area I tackled, forgoing packaged sweets in favor of fresh foods. As for exercise, I started small, walking a mere 5 minutes a week and working up to 3 miles a day. After five months, I was able to go off blood pressure medication. A year later I’d lost 65 pounds. Now, I try to evaluate food as ‘Will this lengthen my life or shorten it?’ I’ve kept the weight off for five years and shed an additional 5 pounds, too. I feel like I’m helping my heart every step of the way.” Gail Mates Haymarket , VA

3 New Ways to Prevent Cancer This expert advice could save your life.
THE RESEARCHER SAYS:
Watch your waist size
Although it’s tempting to brush off the weight that creeps on with age, the average gain of 1 or 2 extra pounds a year can hurt your health. A new British study found that going up a skirt size per decade (which typically means you’re accumulating fat around your abdominal area) was associated with a 33% increase in the chance of breast cancer after menopause. That’s why avoiding weight gain can help lower your risk. If you notice the scale starting to edge upward, make small changes to your diet and exercise routines, such as adding 10 extra minutes to your daily walk or ordering your coffee with fat-free milk instead of cream.

THE GYNECOLOGIST SAYS:
Ask about the HPV test
To protect yourself against cervical cancer, the current recommendation from the American Cancer Society is that women ages 30 to 65 get a Pap smear and the newer HPV test every five years. Research found that the HPV test—which looks for the type of human papillomavirus that can cause precancerous cells—detects up to 70% more cervical cancer cases than the Pap smear. The test is covered by most insurance plans and typically analyzes the same cells used for the Pap, so no extra time is needed at the doctor’s office. SPF SMARTS
You should apply sunscreen even if the sun isn’t shining.
ANDY/JUMP FOTOAGENTUR.
Religious about sunscreen? It’s still a must to schedule annual skin cancer checks, especially if you used a tanning bed when younger. My research found that women ages 40 to 60 are 24 times more likely to develop melanoma—one of the most deadly forms of skin cancer—today than they were in 1970. It’s possibly in part because the women being diagnosed now were the first to use tanning beds during the craze in the ’80s (it can take decades for skin damage to reveal itself). Luckily, these cancers are highly treatable when caught early. In addition to booking a yearly appointment with a dermatologist, protect yourself by examining your skin monthly in front of a mirror to monitor any changes.

Directions: To create a form for your ghost, twist the center of a 3' length of wire around the neck of a 2-liter plastic bottle and bend the ends to make arms. Push a 6" Styrofoam ball onto the top of the bottle. 2 Drape a piece of cheesecloth over the form, allowing it to pool around the base (this is how the ghost will stand up). Trim any excess if needed. 3 In a spray bottle, mix 3 parts water with 1 part liquid fabric stiffener (from $4.69; at craft stores). On a protected work surface, spritz the mixture onto the cheesecloth until it’s saturated; let dry completely (about 24 hours). Repeat process for another coat or two, or until the cheesecloth is stiff. 4 Gently lift the hardened cheesecloth away from the form. Use scissors to cut eyes from black felt and hot-glue in place.

Danielle, a stay-at-home mom of four, discovered she could save up to $250 a month with Amazon Prime Pantry, a service that lets you buy a big box of groceries for a $6 delivery fee. The box can be either 45 lbs or 4 cubic feet of stuff (there’s a graphic showing you how much room you have left). “To get the most out of it, look for your musthave items first,” she advises. Then, if the box isn’t full, pad your purchase with long-lasting staples like dried dog food and nonperishable sale items. “A lot of times you can get a deal, like free shipping, if you buy five items from a single company,” she says.
VISIT DR. DISCOUNT Anita Fowler, livelikeyouarerich.com Hometown: Salt Lake City
“Always ask for a discount on medical, dental, hospital and orthodontic bills,” says Anita. While pregnant, Anita learned she could save $300 by paying her hospital bill before checking out with her newborn. “I also had two ER bills reduced by 20%. In fact, about 7 out of 10 times, I get discounts. In the last 10 months, I’ve saved about $3,000!”
WASTE NOT
Jackie Lam, cheapsters.org Hometown: Los Angeles
Jackie’s “rollover method” challenges her to use leftover ingredients—that lone carrot, dollop of tomato sauce and getting-stale bread—before they die a moldy death. (You can make Italian bread soup, for example, starting with those three.) “You’ll be amazed at what kind of tasty salads you’ll come up with!” she says. If you can’t use perishables right away, punch them into the USDA’s Foodkeeper app. It’ll calculate how long your leftover food will last, and alert you to use it before you lose it.
On sites like Swagbucks, Viggle, Gift Hulk or Insta Gift Card, you earn points for taking surveys or collecting coupons, and trade them for Amazon gift cards, says Danielle. “Then I use the cards on household items, which allows me to put more money into savings.”
GO UNDER COVER Kelli Brink, foodwineandpoopydiapers.com Hometown: Cedar Rapids, IA
Thrift stores are great for kids’ clothes and things like skiwear, but Kelli finds other cold-weather deals: pj’s, Christmas sweaters and “high-quality wool plaid blankets, like Faribault Woolen Mill blankets from Minnesota,” says Kelli. “They can cost several hundred dollars new, but I can find them for around $3 a pop!” Kelli places a few in antique milk crates in rooms throughout her home to add coziness. “Then my family can cuddle up with them on a cold night.”

FIX IT WITH FACEBOOK For all those little projects that need doing around the house, Tai says Facebook has been her savings network. “I’ve recently joined a group for handymen in my area— it’s free, and packed with amazing professional contractors, painters and carpenters looking for a little side income.” Tai posts when she needs something worked on. “I just describe the work that I need done, and within minutes, I have qualified candidates bidding on it,” she says. “I got my daughter’s room painted for $50 instead of the usual $200 to $250!” To find a group in your area, type your city, then the words “Area Handymen Group” in the FB search box and request to join. (Just be sure that anyone you hire is licensed and insured.)
GENERATE INTEREST Kathleen Celmins, stackingbenjamins.com Hometown: Portland, OR
Your savings should be earning you interest. If you have a long-term goal, a regular savings account, with its superlow rates, isn’t the best spot for your cash. Kathleen suggests an index fund—one she used from Vanguard grew more than 12% during 2014, as opposed to the under-1% average yield for a savings account. “If I needed it, I could access it in 48 hours, and I got higher returns.” Kathleen also likes not seeing high balances when she checks her account, since “that might make me want to book a fancy vacation.” Index funds fluctuate, so this isn’t a good shortterm savings option, and you’ll pay taxes on your capital gains. But if your timeline is measured in years, the return is much higher.
BINGE WORK
Lauren Bowling, lbeeandthemoneytree.com Hometown: Atlanta
Earlier this year, Lauren was slowly paying off $8,000 in credit card debt. “Then I went on a debt blitz,” she says. A content marketing manager by day, Lauren devoted every spare moment to earning money to throw at her debts. She found gigs on spot-job websites and through old clients. “I got a few jobs just by asking,” she says. In the end, she was able to pay off the money in 90 days. “It was a crazy time but absolutely worth it,” she adds. The debt monkey is off her back, and she is free of interest payments!

Vacations are awesome, and if you’re out of debt, it’s perfectly reasonable to put a vacation line on your budget. Set a financial goal and divide it by the number of months you have to save, then sock away that amount each month. That’s how our grandparents did it, and it’s still the best way. Question: Did you save up enough money for your vacation? Because rule #1 is that you cannot use debt to finance your trip—and that includes credit cards! I talk to too many families who get excited about a trip and charge themselves into oblivion for a few days of fun. The problem is, that kind of vacation sticks around for months or years in the form of credit card bills. Use common sense and ask yourself, Can I really afford this? If you can’t, then you need to reset your expectations.

Help the kids set budgets, too. Your teens are old enough to understand that a vacation doesn’t mean you stop being smart with money. Give your kids a heads-up about when you’re going so they can begin saving their earnings for extras. And set some rules: Maybe you’ll pay for one souvenir each, but the rest is up to them, or they have a certain amount for snacks at theme parks, and once they’ve blown through it, that’s it. Believe me, they won’t starve to death if they need to wait until dinner.
Is there somewhere closer? Orlando may be a dream trip, but if you can’t pay cash, you’ll need to look a little closer to home. Cutting plane tickets will help. Is there a beach nearby? A mountain resort you can drive to? A lake cabin? RACHEL
No matter how much you’ve saved up, you can make memories without spending thousands. Some things to consider:
What is the true cost? You can plan for airfare and hotel, but miscellaneous expenses will get you. Spend some time thinking about every possible expense you could have on this vacation— transportation to and from theme parks, souvenirs, snacks while you’re out—and make sure you’re fully prepared to pay for all of it! You’ve already made a good choice by staying in a condo. You’ll save by cooking most meals there and being selective about eating out. Now do some research: Look online at the restaurants nearby and see what the average cost of a meal would be. That will help you budget. Do the same thing with

Hopefully you’ve saved enough for Florida, but if not, it’s OK if you decide it’s out of reach right now. A lot of families have gotten turned around on what a vacation really is. Listen, I love roller coasters, but choosing food and clothes (and staying out of debt) over cotton candy is definitely not child abuse! The whole point of a vacation is to relax and spend time with your family. You don’t have to travel far to make that happen. Life in the Slow Lane
Viewing traffic delays as opportunities to practice loving-kindness will lower your blood pressure—and drive you sane. B Y K AT E B R A E S T R U P

n car commercials we are gliding, almost flying down empty roads, past landscapes of hypnotic beauty. But in reality, the average American will spend about 40 hours a year stuck in traffic. We’re schlepping to and from school, work and the store, a Frappuccino in the cupholder and our devices beeping and squawking at us. I spend a lot of time behind the wheel, annoyed. Take that school bus, for example—the one inevitably in front of me when I’m running late, that big, saffron yellow, do-notpass vehicle that belches diesel fumes and stops every 50 feet to collect one or two children from their driveways. When I was a kid,

I had to walk a quarter-mile to the bus stop, where all the children in our neighborhood were expected to wait, so it only had to stop once. We had it tough back in the ’70s! And that gives me the right to loudly gripe about the cushiness of modern childhood. But is that the best way for drivers like me to spend our automobile time? Why not think of my car as a spiritual retreat with a GPS, my commute an escape of sorts from everything I’ll be busy doing once I have, at last, arrived? The view through the windshield offers as much stimulation for contemplation and prayer as a stained-glass window. With this idea in mind, when
the school bus stops in front of me, I make an effort to focus on the uniqueness of each child boarding: Bless the kindergartner whose legs are too short for the bus steps, so she has to use her hands to scuttle up. Bless the gangly kid, carefully maneuvering a school project through that bifold door. And bless the teen whose self-consciousness is visible even from three car lengths away. It gets better, sweetheart. Ahh! That feels much nicer than frustration. And when I’ve slowed down again, I try to take another deep breath—especially when an ambulance or a fire truck is the delay. Its siren is an obvious signal that someone is suffering. What better reason can there be to say a prayer? God, grant courage and patience to those who hurt, speed and skill to those who help. I did not invent the notion of the car as a mobile monastery. The Vietnamese Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh suggests that we regard red traffic lights as a “bell of mindfulness,” a signal that reminds us to stop, consciously bringing our minds back to our bodies, where we may rest in the present moment. There are so many reasons why it’s a good idea to “awaken” to the present when the driver in front of you has applied the brakes (and to hope the driver behind you wakes up as well!). If traffic is jammed, there might be time for a grateful prayer. Thank you, God, for movement and stillness, for darkness and light, for getting me home safely. Thank you for all the people you have given to me to love. Practicing loving-kindness ensures that all your travels will lead you closer to peace. KATE BRAESTRUP is a

Pet C AR E
The Truth About Pet Vaccines Rumors and mistaken beliefs can make owners hesitant to vaccinate their dogs and cats. Here, experts set the record straight. B Y G I L L I A N A L D R I C H
MYTH #2
MYTH #3
MYTH #4
“Vaccinations are just a way for vets to make more money.”
“Most states require annual rabies shots, but it’s fine to skip some.”
“My cat lives inside and my dog doesn’t go to parks, so they don’t need shots.”
“I’ve heard vaccine reactions can be fatal. I’m not taking any chances.”
FACT: Not vaccinating is likely to be even more costly for you. You may save a few bucks now, but you’ll pay dearly if your pet gets sick. Parvovirus, for example, is deadly and highly contagious—your dog or puppy could catch it from another dog or any infected surface. Treatment can run you $1,000 (the shot costs about $10 to $30), and unvaccinated dogs have a very low survival rate. Fully vaccinating your dog against common ailments can cost $150 per year.
FACT: When you don’t keep up with boosters, you risk an outbreak. Regular vaccine boosters are necessary to maintain immunity. When you skip a rabies shot, you’re not only breaking the law, but you’re also putting your own pet and any cats, dogs or humans who come in contact with him at risk. All it takes to get rabies is a scuffle with a rabid skunk or cat. The disease is fatal, but most rabid pets die from euthanasia, and any humans who handled him will likely need preventive treatment.
FACT: Many common diseases spread without direct animal contact. Feline distemper, also known as panleukopenia, is a highly contagious virus (it can live for up to two years on a surface), and can easily find a way into your home. If a friend’s cat with panleukopenia rubs up on you, you can infect your cat. Dogs can get canine distemper simply by inhaling it, so if your dog sniffs the wrong urine, or another dog sneezes near him on a walk, he can contract it.
FACT: Fewer than 1% of animals have an adverse reaction to vaccines. Studies indicate that while such reactions can happen, lethargy, soreness or swelling are the most common complaints. Less frequently, animals can develop fever, an allergic reaction or an immune disorder. It’s a much greater risk to expose your pet to the deadly diseases that vaccinations guard against.
Give ’em their best shots Discuss these core vaccines, recommended for every cat and dog, with your veterinarian. You can also call a local shelter for a list of nearby low-cost clinics and learn about free rabies vaccination days. Many clinics have discount vaccine days, too; look them up at vetcoclinics.com or pawsplus.com.
