editor’s page Me with Chip and Joanna—in fleece vests, Chip’s favorite look

my day with the

fixer uppers

On my way to Waco, TX, to spend a day with Chip and Joanna Gaines, I was fully aware that about a zillion people would love to trade places with me. I’d be touring their store, watching them film Fixer Upper, and hanging out at their farmhouse, chatting up Chip as he fed the goats and talking design with Joanna as she made a chicken potpie. (Read the play-by-play of the full day on page 81—and get Joanna’s recipe, which is, by the way, delicious.) I asked questions all day long, hitting on everything from their least favorite colors (hers is purple; his is orange) to where they met (in her dad’s auto shop; Joanna was working there, and, as luck would have it, Chip needed his brakes fixed). But here’s what I really loved hearing them say: Nailing their signature style didn’t happen overnight. As they’ve brought countless left-for-dead houses back to life, they’ve worked hard to hone, tweak, and practice their design moves. They never stop learning by doing. That’s cool. And inspiring. Whatever project, however intimidating, I have going on in my home, I’ll remember the Fixer Uppers’ motto: Keep getting better by doing. As they say in Texas, you can hang your hat on that.

Walls made of shiplap (rough-sawed wood boards) are a style staple in Fixer Upper renos. So it’s no surprise this #shiplap T-shirt ($26, magnoliamarket.com) is a top seller at their store in Waco.

2

Chip and Joanna don’t have a TV in their home. They watch episodes of Fixer Upper at a friend’s house—usually while eating dessert!

3

Their 1895 farmhouse is the ninth home they’ve lived in and renovated together. They did a complete gut reno of it that took about a year.

4

They once painted one of their houses schoolbus yellow and hated it! Their current house is white (Alabaster by Sherwin-Williams).

5

You can browse the Gaineses’ new furniture line, Magnolia Home, at mhf.net. Pieces like this Frenchinspired night table will start showing up in select retail stores this month.

6

Joanna grows a ton of flowers and plants in her garden and her greenhouse. She likes to grow all the ingredients to make salsa (tomatoes, fresh herbs), and her favorite blooms are her pink antique roses.

7

Chip has worn the same style of jeans and boots since they got married in 2003: Gap 1969 standardfit jeans and Ariat boots (at right). Joanna’s favorites are Citizen low-rise skinny jeans and Frye boots.

Thank you for that sneak peek of the HGTV Dream Home 2016 in your January/February issue. With its pale gray–and-white color scheme, the living room has such a beautiful, airy feel. It’s definitely dreamy! The pendant lights are my favorite part. That modern metal style is one look I may have to steal for my own home. —Jena Adrianson, Greenwood, IN

I loved the different shades of blue and green on the cover of the January/ February issue. Cobalt blue, kelly green, and turquoise with a little yellow thrown in—very stylish! Thanks for the fun color-combo idea. —Cindy Cochran, Baton Rouge, LA

I love the way Mary Kay Andrews displayed her art on ledges mounted to the wall [July/August’s “Junk Never Looked So Good!”]. I thought it would be a brilliant way to show off family photos, so my husband and I cut plywood into ledges, painted them, and attached them to our living room wall. They look great. —Anna Munoz, Downey, CA

Thanks to your recurring columns “Come On In!” and “Copy the Curb Appeal,” I had tons of ideas for freshening up my home’s exterior after I had it painted. I replaced the plastic doorbell with a brushed-nickel one, installed a shiny new kickplate, and switched out my plain house numbers for framed tile ones. —Maureen Allen, Vienna, VA

I took Sara’s challenge from the January/February issue to style using stuff I already own [Editor’s Page] and dug up some “new” items for my living room. My collection of teapots and teacups, found buried in a cupboard, now makes a pretty display. I’ve received a lot of compliments already. Thanks, Sara!

I’m getting ready to move into a new home, so I’ve been reading decorating magazines for the first time in years. HGTV Magazine is packed with great design ideas, and I found myself tearing out every page. I quickly realized I should stop tearing and just save the entire issue so I can put all your tips to work in my new place.

I’m a newbie to HGTV Magazine, and I was happy to find that the ideas you feature are exactly what I’ve been looking for. I love the Paint Index and the way you tell me where I can buy everything, like the cute canisters and the pressed-tin backsplash in November’s “Kitchen Upgrades, Big & Small.” I could go on and on. This is the most inspiring magazine I’ve read in a long time. You get me!

talk to us Editor’s note: In the January/February issue, we neglected to tell you where to find the pretty countertop featured in “Style With What You Have.” It’s the Influencer Series quartz countertop in lusso (from $69 per square foot, silestoneusa.com for stores). help wanted tell us your

household habits Experts weigh in on the results from our hgtv.com poll that asked about your at-home routines.

eader poll esult s! Do you hide a key outside?

77% 23% No

Yes

THE EXPERT SAYS Key-hiding spots homeowners think are stealthy—like under flowerpots or doormats—are often the first place burglars check, says Todd Morris, CEO of BrickHouse Security, a global security and surveillance company. Instead of hiding keys outside, ask a neighbor to keep a set for you. Or ditch keys altogether and upgrade to a digital keypad. “Modern keys were invented in the mid1800s. They’re not a high-security device,” says Morris.

help wanted Do you lock your car when it’s in the driveway?

85%

15%

Yes

No

THE EXPERT SAYS Even if you think your neighborhood is safe, “lock your car every time you walk away from it,” says private investigator and security consultant Chris McGoey, president of McGoey Security Consulting in Los Angeles, CA. But remember: A locked car isn’t a bank vault, and stuff you might not consider all that valuable— loose change, dry cleaning—can be tempting targets for crooks.

Do you ask people to take their shoes off when they come in the house?

78% No

22% Yes

THE EXPERT SAYS You might be stepping on some toes, but asking guests to kick off their footwear will keep your home cleaner—and healthier. Aside from the fact that shoes can deposit dirt onto floors and carpets (plus scratch hardwood), they can also bring in potentially dangerous pollutants and chemicals. One study funded by the Environmental Protection Agency found that lawn herbicides can cling to shoes and be tracked into a home up to a week after the weed killer was applied to grass. Since not all visitors will be enthusiastic about going shoeless, especially if they have frayed socks or a chipped pedi, keep freshly laundered socks at the entry for them to slip on.

Do you let your pet sleep in bed with you?

53%

32%

Yes

15%

No

Sometimes

THE EXPERT SAYS As long as Fido or Fluffy is clean and isn’t disrupting your shut-eye, there’s no reason you can’t snuggle up. According to Lois Krahn, M.D., a professor of psychiatry and a sleep medicine specialist at the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, AZ, slumbering alongside your pet can often be a source of comfort and security. Problems arise when a noisy or restless dog or cat is waking you up, in which case you should consider restricting your bedmates to humans only. While the chances are slim you’ll catch a disease from your pet, make sure he’s tick- and flea-free before sharing the sheets. And if you’re squeamish about his hygiene habits, help him along with pet wipes.

Do you leave workmen in the house when you’re not home?

82% No

18% Yes

THE EXPERT SAYS No matter how much you might trust a workman, giving a virtual stranger an all-access pass to your house is risky. “Workmen can duplicate your keys, unlatch windows and doors to return later, or subcontract the work out to someone else,” says Chris McGoey, of McGoey Security Consulting. Can’t avoid having someone in your house unsupervised? At a minimum, secure your valuables and consider installing security cameras.

How old is your mattress?

16% More than 10 years

THE EXPERT SAYS Signs a mattress is kaput usually hit around the eight-year mark, according to the National Sleep Foundation. Telltale clues include waking up stiff and achy, finding you get a better night’s rest when you’re not in your own bed, and sags and lumps on the mattress’s surface. While you can’t make the typical innerspring mattress last forever, you can extend its life span by rotating it once a month and using a box spring or foundation.

How do you deal with a clogged tub drain?

Do you open your mail every day?

56% Yes

44% No

THE EXPERT SAYS When you’re time-crunched during the week, it’s OK to skip opening the mail daily—but you shouldn’t just toss it onto a pile you’ll deal with in a month or so. According to Kim Oser, a Washington, D.C.–based professional organizer, the most efficient way to tackle the task is with a fast sort and purge as soon as mail comes into the house. Each evening, set magazines and catalogs beside your favorite reading spot, recycle the junk, shred credit card offers, and place time-sensitive action items, like bills, in a designated spot. Then once a week, open and respond to the high-priority mail.

Cluett suggests keeping temps between 72 and 78 degrees Fahrenheit and using a fan—which requires less energy than an AC—to circulate air.

Use a chemical drain cleaner

Snake the drain

Use a plunger

Call a plumber

THE EXPERT SAYS Hair in the pipes is the likeliest culprit of a clogged tub drain, and there’s an ecofriendly solution, says Paul Abrams, a Roto-Rooter spokesperson. His fix: Shape the end of a wire coat hanger into a hook, push it into the drain, rotate it, and pull out the hair. Pour ½ cup of baking soda down the drain, then ½ cup of white vinegar. Wait 30 minutes, pour hot water down the drain, then repeat with the baking soda, vinegar, and hot water. No luck? Try a sink plunger, a drain auger, a chemical drain cleaner, or, if you’re in over your head, a plumber.

THE EXPERT SAYS Lots of homeowners like to sleep with the door open. They want to hear what’s happening in other rooms and for their kids and pets to be able to wander in and out. But from a safety standpoint, an open door can be an invitation for trouble. Lorraine Carli, spokesperson for the National Fire Protection Association, says a closed door is one of the best defenses against the heat and smoke of a fire and can slow the progress of flames. Regardless of whether you or your kids sleep with the door open, “make sure you have smoke alarms in each bedroom and outside the sleeping area,” she says.

Do you sleep with your cell phone next to your bed? How often do you wash your sheets?

THE EXPERT SAYS If you’re laundering your sheets just twice a month, your bed isn’t the dreamy sanctuary you may think it is. According to Philip M. Tierno, Jr., Ph.D., professor of microbiology and pathology at New York University School of Medicine, when you slip under the covers, you’re transferring everything from saliva to sweat (up to four cups of perspiration per night!) onto your sheets. Tierno recommends washing sheets at least once a week using hot water and drying them on high heat.

THE EXPERT SAYS A phone by your pillow can be a sleep stealer. Use it right before bed—or in the middle of the night if you wake up—and you expose yourself to the phone’s blue light, which can interfere with the body’s snooze-wake cycle. Folks exposed to this faux illumination “may have reduced sleep time and may take longer to fall asleep,” says Alon Y. Avidan, M.D., a professor of neurology at UCLA and the director of the school’s Sleep Disorders Center. For the best shot at shut-eye, avoid using your phone right before bed, place it on the other side of the room, and set email and text alerts to silent.

Do you save store receipts?

57% Yes

43% No

THE EXPERT SAYS It’s tempting to trash them immediately, but you should hang on to receipts—sometimes for a little while, occasionally for years. Short-term, keep receipts if you might want to return the item or if you want to check the receipt against your credit card statement. After that, pitch ’em. For big-ticket purchases like furniture, appliances, and electronics with warranties, it’s smart to save the receipt as long as you own the item in case you need to file an insurance claim or use the warranty. On anything you’re deducting on your tax return as a business expense, save the receipt for three years from the date you file your tax return, says Gregory Wozniak, C.P.A., a partner at accounting firm Marcum LLP in Melville, NY.

if your

vase of flowers

could talk

It would overflow with tips on how to help blooms look their best.

What, you think I’m immortal?

The life span of most cut flowers is a week, tops. Roses and peonies die fast— they’re usually goners in three days. But lilies, carnations, and sunflowers have staying power. If you can, buy blooms that have just been cut and are locally grown, such as ones at a farmer’s market.

I’m a picky eater.

Put plenty of distance between flowers and fruits and veggies, which release ethylene, a gas that can cause a bouquet to spoil more quickly. Many dying blossoms also pump out ethylene, so remove them from an arrangement as soon as they start to wilt.

I’m not exactly low-maintenance.

A packet of powdered floral preservative, which is loaded with nourishing sugars and germ-fighting biocides, is the best way to keep flowers perky. Don’t bother with pennies, aspirin, or bleach.

Strip off any foliage that will be below the waterline. Every two to three days, snip off 3/4 of an inch to 1 inch of stem, change the water (use lukewarm H2O), and add new floral preservative. Keep bouquets away from heat sources, like fireplaces and radiators, and sunlight.

Think of my stems as straws.

A dirty vase can harbor bacteria that could infect the bouquet. Between uses, clean a vase with a solution of 10 parts hot water to one part bleach, then rinse thoroughly. And avoid metal vases. They can make the pH of the water less flower-friendly.

Blooms that can’t suck H2O up their stems won’t last long. To expose more of the stems to water and increase water absorption, cut the bottom of each at a 45-degree angle. You can use a sharp knife, which most florists prefer, or shears.

Renovation projects are easier with help from the experts! Get inspired, browse articles, and watch videos, then check the calendar and make plans to say hello when TD Rolling Renovation comes your way. Visit TDRollingRenovation.com for details on the tour and more.

With just a couple of weeks’ work, you can add years of enjoyment (and considerable resale value) to your home. Here are a few things to keep in mind, before breaking ground. Location, Location, Location: Think about your home’s interior as well as exterior when deciding where to place your deck. Since the space will no doubt be used for entertaining, look for easy access to the kitchen and powder room.

The Layered Look: For added visual interest, consider a multilevel deck, with each elevation designated for a different activity such as lounging, socializing, or dining.

Choose Your Materials: Composite decking is lowmaintenance, eco-friendly, and offers a wide variety of styles. Traditionalists may prefer pressuretreated wood for cost efficiency or hardwoods like cedar and redwood for their natural beauty.

“Consider maintenance before choosing materials. Wood needs to be stained and sealed regularly.” Jason Cameron, host of DIY Network’s Desperate Landscapes

Plant Perennials: Surround the edges to ease the transition to the landscape and place potted planters filled with annuals on your deck for colorful accents.

Let There Be Lights: Strategically placed lighting will allow you to enjoy your outdoor space long after the sun goes down. Use a combination of solar and traditional lighting.

Straight answers to scratch-your-head questions.

DISHES: ALAMY; RAZOR: CHRIS ECKERT/STUDIO D: BUBBLES: JEFF WESTBROOK/STUDIO D; DOG BOWL, GRASS: ISTOCKPHOTO

…to shave your legs with soap and water?

…to put plates away when they’re still damp from the dishwasher? Don’t worry about slightly drippy dishes. There isn’t any research showing that stacking damp plates will create a health hazard, says food-safety expert Peter Snyder, Ph.D. If you’re concerned that the damp environment will create a breeding ground for bacteria, know that pathogens—the type of bacteria that can make you sick—can’t grow in water alone. “Pathogenic bacteria need lots of nutrients to grow, and water just doesn’t have them,” Snyder says. That said, H2O left on dishes can drip on shelves, creating mildew, so it’s best to let damp dishes air-dry before stashing them.

not so bad!

WRITTEN BY SARAH GROSSBART

If you suds your legs with regular soap and grab a razor, you’re headed for stubble trouble. The key to a smooth shave is hydrating the hair with the rich lather you get from shaving creams and gels, says Rhonda Pomerantz, M.D., a New York, NY–based dermatologist. “Bar soap tends to remove the natural oil from your skin, and dry skin is more prone to nicks, cuts, and irritation.” Out of shaving cream? In a pinch, body wash or hair conditioner will create enough lubrication for the razor to glide smoothly— though both can gum up the blades, so don’t make using them a habit.

pretty bad!

…to let your dog eat grass? Rover can chew to his heart’s content. “There’s nothing wrong with eating grass,” says Patty Khuly, V.M.D., a Miami, FL–based vet. “In fact, it may actually improve dogs’ health.” While vets aren’t exactly sure why your meat-loving, squirrelchasing pup covets the green stuff, they believe that the leafy blades—which are packed with digestible fiber and healthy probiotics—may satisfy a nutritional need. Dr. Khuly cautions against letting your pet chow down if he’s one of the 25% of dogs that throw up after eating grass, a sign the roughage doesn’t sit well in his stomach. Another thing to watch out for: pesticide-treated lawns or fields that get high animal traffic and could be laced with droppings. In those places, keep your pup on a short leash.

not so bad!

…to rinse a paintbrush in the sink? It depends on whether your house is on a septic system or a public sewer system. People with a septic system should never let any amount of latex paint go down the drain. However, if your house is on a public sewer system, it’s probably not a problem. Follow these steps from Paul Abrams, RotoRooter spokesperson, to save your pipes from a potential clog: First soak the brush in a small jar of water for a few hours. Then turn the faucet on as you pour the jar’s contents down the sink to dilute them even further. Leave the tap on for 30 seconds to a minute, then wipe your sink with an all-purpose cleaner.

Your java habit may actually be beneficial to your health. High coffee consumption has been linked to a lower risk of type 2 diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, and liver cancer, says Rob van Dam, Ph.D., adjunct associate professor at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. And according to a study the school recently released, three to five cups a day could reduce the risk of premature death for nonsmokers by 15%. To reap the benefits minus the jitters, aim for three to five 8-ounce cups a day. (Starbucks lovers, take note: A grande is 16 ounces.) However, says van Dam, some people metabolize coffee more quickly than others. So if too much joe leaves you buzzing, cut back.

not bad at all!

…to throw electronics in the trash? Trashing electronics isn’t just bad for the environment—in some cases, it’s illegal. “There are 20 states with a ban on tossing certain electronics,” says Jason Linnell, executive director of the National Center for Electronics Recycling. The reasoning is twofold. First, if you’re tossing your old TV or iPhone, “you’re not taking advantage of the possibility that the device could be refurbished or mined for useful materials,” says Linnell. Second, some gadgets contain toxins, such as lead or mercury. The good news is there is some form of electronics recycling in every state, either at designated recycling centers or at stores like Best Buy and Staples. To find a spot near you, visit greenergadgets.org.

super bad!

…to testdrive a car you have zero interest in buying? There’s no shame in taking a free ride— as long as you’re up front about your intentions, says Jeremy Zumbrunnen, a sales manager at Avis Ford in Southfield, MI. While he admits that some salespeople would be frustrated by a customer who wastes their time acting as if she plans to buy, he adds, “If you clearly told me you wanted to test-drive a Mustang convertible you have no intention of buying, I’d be OK with it.” Some dealerships might turn you down, but many would be willing to hand over the keys because there’s a chance you could become a future customer or at least talk up your experience to friends. Just make sure to come in during the dealership’s slower hours, generally the morning and early afternoon. Then push the pedal to the metal— and your guilt aside!

what’s the difference Finally! Clarification on some commonly confused household terms.

Like the cheetah, this animal print has roundish spots. On clothing and home accessories, the spots are black or brown and usually set against a neutral background.

beadboard Beadboard is wood paneling with thin vertical grooves, called beads, cut into the wood. Sold in easy-to-install sheets, it adds country charm to walls and ceilings.

fiddlehead fern Fiddleheads are the coiled fronds of young ferns. The best-known variety is harvested from the ostrich fern in early spring and eaten as a gourmet foraged vegetable.

delicate cycle The delicate cycle is intended for garments that could shrink or break down in a normal cycle, such as knits and lingerie. Its low agitation lessens wear and tear.

vs. leopard print Leopard print, fashionable since the ’40s, has irregularshaped brown or tan spots outlined in black. More popular than cheetah, it often comes in not-seen-in-nature colors.

vs. board-and-batten Often seen in Craftsman-style homes, board-and-batten paneling has uniformly spaced battens, or wood strips. The battens originally hid seams but are now mainly decorative.

vs. fiddle-leaf fig A fiddle-leaf fig is a tropical tree with violin-shaped leaves. It’s a popular houseplant, but it can be fussy: It needs bright indirect sunlight and consistent soil moisture to thrive.

vs. hand-wash cycle The hand-wash cycle is even gentler and can include extra pauses so the garment can soak. Although great for fragile fabrics, it is not recommended for hand-wash-only items.

wo years ago, when Melissa and Josh Bengal bought their 1906 house in Glen Rock, NJ, they couldn’t wait to put their personal stamp on the combined living and dining rooms. Then…nothing happened. Distracted by work, the demands of firsttime homeownership, and their growing family (they have a 3-year-old son, Andrew, and another on the way), the couple let decorating fall by the wayside. “The space was dark and awkward,” says Melissa. “I didn’t know where to put furniture, so I just didn’t buy anything.” All the wood trim throughout the rooms also had her stumped. There was so much of it  ––  and Josh loved it. To inject the rooms with personality, we came up with a pretty color scheme, switched the orientation of the living and dining rooms, and added much-needed furniture and accessories, all while keeping the wood trim as is. Now, says Melissa, the entire space feels “uplifting and bright  ––  the polar opposite of what it used to be.”

1. Cut a 3/4-inch-thick pine board to 28 inches by 51/2 inches. Sand the edges with medium-grit sandpaper, followed by fine-grit sandpaper. 2. Using painter’s tape, tape off the top and bottom surfaces of the board. Spray-paint all four of the board’s edges gold. Remove the tape while the paint is still wet. Let dry. 3. With a pencil, lightly mark the middle of a 50-inch-long piece of leather. Using a crafts knife, slice the leather in half at the pencil mark, creating two strips. 4. Fold one of the strips in half. Drill a small hole 1/2 inch down from each end. Insert a screw through the holes so the strip forms a loop. Repeat with the second strip. 5. To hang the shelf, sink two drywall anchors into the wall. Insert the screws into the drywall anchors, and tighten. Place the board through the loops, as shown.

painted wood-accented wall

THE BLOGGER: Mandi Gubler THE BLOG: vintagerevivals.com

“Making a poster board template is the key to creating this intricate design.”

1. To make the template, use a protractor and a straight edge to draw a parallelogram on a piece of poster board. The parallelogram should measure 15 inches by 13 inches, with two 40° angles and two 140° angles, as shown above. Cut it out. 2. Place the template at the top center of a white wall, with one corner touching the ceiling. Use a pencil to trace the shape onto the wall. 3. Flip the template over. Align it with the right side of the penciled shape, and trace it onto the wall. Continue flipping the template to make a chevron design across the top of the entire wall. 4. Create the remaining rows of chevrons by flipping the template to create a mirror image of the row above. Repeat until all the rows are drawn. 5. Using painter’s tape, tape off every other shape in the top row. In four plastic containers, mix paint with increasing amounts of white to create four lighter shades. Paint every other shape, starting on the far left with the original shade of paint and finishing on the right with the lightest shade, creating an ombré effect. Remove the painter’s tape. Let dry. Repeat for each subsequent row. 6. Use the template to cut the same shape out of plywood, cutting as many pieces as you need to finish the wall. 7:30 A.M. EAT BREAKFAST Even on weekday mornings, Joanna whips up something hot, and the family eats together in the kitchen. The rotation includes biscuits and gravy, pancakes, and eggs with toast.

8:15 A.M. 8:00 A.M. GET READY With four kiddos—Drake, 11; Ella 9; Duke, 8; and Emmie, 6—to hurry out the door, Joanna gets dressed before they wake up. Her secret: “At night I shower and dry my hair, so in the morning I only have to curl it.”

LEAVE FOR WORK Joanna takes her coffee to go—tons of cream, no sugar—and she and Chip head off for the day. Their 1895 farmhouse sits on the outskirts of Waco, about 20 minutes from downtown.

8:30 A.M. DRIVE INTO TOWN They head across a lake and through pastures—talk about a scenic commute! “Chip always makes me look out the window for deer,” says Joanna. “We’re usually talking on the way to work. We don’t even have the radio on.”

8:45 A.M. STOP AT THE STORE There’s usually a line of customers waiting outside the design duo’s store, Magnolia Market, before it opens at 10 a.m. About 15,000 people visit the shop every week.

Unroll one 8-ounce package crescent roll dough on top of the filling, and bake until the top is browned, about 30 minutes.

ot every buyer would spot the potential in a ’60s ranch house with drab paneling, rotted floor joists, and linoleum tiles contaminated with asbestos. But Hannah Crowell and James Wilson, who bought the 2,400-square-foot fixer-upper in Nashville, TN, two years ago, felt a mid-century gem lurked within the neglected home. The pair  ––  she’s an interior designer; he’s a brand consultant who has built furniture  ––  figured they could pull off a warp-speed DIY reno. Despite hiccups (like James almost burning down the place while attempting electrical work), the house came together in four fast months. Now the airy, open interior is real-life livable for Hannah’s daughters and still reflects the couple’s shared tastes. Clean-lined furniture mingles with rustic pieces James crafted, and there are white walls, modern lighting, and Music City mementos everywhere. (Hannah’s grandfather was country legend Johnny Cash.) “The remodel was exhausting,” Hannah says. “But we created something that is 100% our family, and that means everything.”

FAMILY ROOM

Tearing out Mad Men–era paneling, then painting the new drywall Decorator’s White by Benjamin Moore instantly brightened the family room. Vivid pillows give the neutral Lee Industries sectional some zing. James built the white oak coffee table, and the ceiling light is by Serge Mouille. The cheerleader painting was done by James’ childhood friend.

EXTERIOR

The home, which is situated on a 2 1/2-acre lot, was super shabby after five years as a rental. To boost the curb appeal, the couple had the shutters removed, the bricks painted dazzling white (Pearl White by Pratt & Lambert), and the trim painted coal black (Off-Black by Farrow & Ball).

LIVING ROOM

The site of family get-togethers and jam sessions, the living room includes a blue velvet BSC sofa, a cast-off chair James rescued streetside in Brooklyn and re-covered in a Native American wool blanket, and guitars for anyone who’s feeling musical. Found on eBay, the fuzzy Moroccan-style wool rug “shed for a year,” says Hannah. The oval brass table is from Nuevo.

94 HGTV Magazine

BOOK NOOK

“Our family is huge on reading, and we don’t use e-readers,” says Hannah. So James converted a niche next to the living room fireplace into a mini library. The shelves, crafted from simple clear pine, hold the family of book lovers’ ever-expanding collection. The leather-and-steel chair is from Savant Vintage, one of Nashville’s hottest secondhand shops.

DINING ROOM

Two types of white chairs— wishbone and wipe-clean metal from overstock.com—play off the weathered dining table Hannah bought 13 years ago in California. “The table is uneven, has cracks, and has had to be treated for termites, but I love it,” she says. The swirly blue curtains were sewn from Electra Eggleston linen, and the chandelier is from Schoolhouse Electric.

KITCHEN

The trapped-in-time kitchen was modernized with a Carrara marble tile backsplash, honed statuary marble counters, and stainless steel appliances. The layout and square footage didn’t change—the room is 12 feet by 17 feet—but it feels roomier thanks to a compact banquette and vintage fold-flat leather camp stools. The steel table from Blu Dot has an MDF top coated in kid-proof polyurethane.

MASTER BEDROOM

The BSC bed, upholstered in gray linen, was originally taller than the window. “That drove me crazy. We eventually cut the headboard so it fit under the sill,” says Hannah. A fan of fabric dyed with natural indigo, Hannah framed two remnants as art and turned a third into a long rectangular pillow. The rug is a vintage Southwestern find from an antiques store in Louisville, KY.

After a total rip-out, Hannah updated it with a black-andwhite palette, using Amethyst Artisan cement floor tiles and square ceramic wall tiles outlined in black grout. Brass sconces from Cedar & Moss nod to the home’s build date.

ADELINE’S BEDROOM

With strategic pops of pink and sophisticated touches like a West Elm drum-shade pendant, Adeline’s bedroom is sweet but not sugary. Playful patterns, from the paisley bedding to the quatrefoil window shades, rev up the white walls and furniture.

IRIS’ BEDROOM

Since Iris’ bedroom is smaller than her sister’s, Hannah gave her something special: Hygge & West wallpaper screen-printed with blue birds and clouds. The floating bunk beds, designed by the couple and made by James, are bolted into the wall studs to take up a minimum of space. Also streamlined: the petite West Elm desk and the tulip-shaped chair. The overdyed lavender rug is from NuLoom.

A perfect example of what Kim calls her “loud and layered but livable” look, this space packs on the patterns with Osborne & Little wallpaper and high-back upholstered chairs from Etsy. To balance them out, Kim kept most of the other furniture low-key, with a cushiony plum sofa from sofa.com, a herringbone Dash & Albert rug, and a modern coffee table from Blu Dot.

K

im West may never have become a designer if she hadn’t moved to Austin, TX. Although she and her husband, David, had rehabbed several apartments when they lived in New York City, “it’s crazy expensive to start a business there,” says the former fashion executive. So four years ago the couple headed south, where they fell in love with a 1920s Craftsman. The home had pretty period details but lacked pizzazz, making it a perfect testing ground for Kim’s quirky style. Friends took notice, and soon Kim launched not one but two businesses: a real-estate development company with her husband, for which she handles the interior design of the houses they remodel, and Supply, a showroom that sells to-the-trade home goods. Now her signature “color and pattern explosions” are seen in homes throughout Austin. “Designing our house helped me design the life I wanted,” she says.

106 HGTV Magazine

Other than painting the front door French blue (Watertown by Benjamin Moore), Kim left the exterior as is. “I’m a blue addict,” she says. “It shows up in all my projects.” Drought-friendly plants, like a prickly pear cactus and agave, fill up the flower beds.

With its impressive blue vintage chesterfield sofas, orchid rug from One Kings Lane, and metallic gold wallpaper from Ferm Living, the extra-wide entry—which doubles as a living area—sets the tone for the rest of the home. “This room is a preview,” says Kim. “It tells you this isn’t your traditional Craftsman house.”

shelving

Cookbooks, a cake stand, and knickknacks live on these tough-looking metal shelves, which Kim found at the Round Top antiques fair in Texas. “Its industrialness keeps the kitchen from looking too sweetie pie,” she says.

A vintage Empire-style chandelier and a retro-style Big Chill fridge in light blue help distract from the cook space’s older cabinets. The black-and-white tile floors were also already in place when the Wests moved in. Although they’re a little beat up, Kim likes their 1950s charm.

It may have been designed for Lulu, but this space appeals to adults, too, thanks to its playful lowslung daybed from PBteen and the graphic CB2 rug. The pint-size wicker table and chairs from One Kings Lane are vintage.

“You’ll always see some kind of amazing wallpaper in the homes I design,” says Kim. The Famille Summerbelle one in her daughter’s room features a pattern called Morning in Manhattan, a nod to Lulu’s birthplace. A Rikshaw Design quilt and a Dash & Albert cotton rug play up the blue-andwhite color scheme. Kim admits the Wolfum teepee is more for her than for Lulu. “She doesn’t use it much, but I love the fabric,” she says.

ynthia Patton and Patrick Robison had always planned to trade in their compact 1950s home in Los Angeles, CA, for bigger digs. But after 14 years, the couple decided to improve rather than move, so they embarked on an ambitious reno that doubled their square footage and added a second floor. As the house was transformed from a rancher to a Cape Cod, the kitchen gained a larger footprint  ––  and an equally big personality. Topping the wish list they gave architect Joan Swartz and interior designer Alison Kandler: plenty of space for meal prep, a cheery breakfast room, and lots of vivid blue. “It’s my favorite color,” says Cynthia. Now the revamped kitchen works hard  ––  Cynthia and Patrick are both enthusiastic cooks who like to make from-scratch family dinners and special dishes for get-togethers  ––  but is still a happy and comfortable space. “It’s not so precious that we’re afraid to make a mess,” says Cynthia.

Do you ever have flowers? Are you green all year?

MATT ANKER/GAP PHOTOS

How did you become so popular?

with a boxwood Answers to everything you ever wondered about the much-loved shrub.

WRITTEN BY LINDA VATER

HGTV Magazine 135

outdoor style Q: What’s the plural of boxwood? A: Many experts prefer “boxwood,” but you can find “boxwoods” in the dictionary.

Q: Do all boxwood look the same? A: Nope. There are more than 400 kinds of boxwood, and there are many

boxwood in the spring or the summer if you check them closely for insects and make sure they get enough water.

Q: Do any have flowers?

A: Boxwood are known for foliage, not flowers. All boxwood can produce compact bunches of yellow and green flowers in the spring, but they’re hardly noticeable. And English boxwood, the most commonly planted boxwood in America, typically bloom only when they are environmentally stressed and trying to reproduce.

Yikes! This place stinks like a shrub!

136  HGTV Magazine

Q: Are preserved boxwood real or fake?

A: Preserved boxwood are real plants treated

with glycerin for softness and suppleness and green dye for color. Commonly used in topiaries, wreaths, and garlands, preserved boxwood can maintain their lush look for up to five years when kept indoors. If your home’s air is dry, mist the leaves with water every so often to keep them hydrated.

Q: No offense, but don’t boxwood smell like a litter box? A: Not necessarily! True, the leaves of some

boxwood varieties, especially English boxwood, are known for giving off a more potent scent than others do. Some say they smell like a used litter box, but not all people think so. Ask your nursery, and sniff before you buy.

FROM TOP: SUZIE GIBBONS/GAP PHOTOS; SHUTTERSTOCK; GETTY IMAGES

Q: When is the best time to plant boxwood? A: In the fall, but you can plant

differences among them. All boxwood have small round or pointed green leaves, but variegated boxwood—such as the Elegantissima boxwood—have white or yellow streaks, which make them appear to be a pale shade of green from afar. Some, like the John Baldwin boxwood, sprout foliage with a bluish tint.

Q: What type of care do boxwood need?

A: Glad you asked! Many boxwood owners confuse

low maintenance with no maintenance. Like most evergreen plants, a boxwood needs thinning (the removal of some of the outer branches) every few years. Do this to improve air circulation within the plant, which prevents disease, and to let light reach the inner branches. As for water, you can often rely on rain, but if there’s been more than a week of dry weather, give the soil around the trunk a good soaking.

Q: Can I plant the cutoff branches?

A: Yes, you can plant them in your yard

to grow new boxwood, but they’ll do best if you plant them in a pot first. That way they can establish roots before you transfer them to the ground. All varieties like a little shade (part sun, part shade is best) and well-drained soil with a pH between 6.8 and 7.5.

Q: Is it true ancient Egyptians planted boxwood? A: Yes! Ancient Egyptians and Greeks grew boxwood as early as 4,000 B.C., and the shrubs have been a staple in American landscaping since colonial times. The first boxwood in North America was planted on Long Island, NY, in 1653, and George Washington grew boxwood in his gardens at his home in Mount Vernon, VA.

Q: If boxwood are evergreen, why do mine turn orange?

A: They’re not supposed to, but the outer leaves of

boxwood can turn reddish orange because of the depletion of chlorophyll cells. This can happen in the fall to plants that get a lot of direct sunlight. If your boxwood are otherwise healthy, they should regain their green color in the spring. If leaves turn straw yellow, that usually indicates winter burn, which occurs when foliage dries out and dies. Prune the branches back to where the yellowing stops.

Experience Weightlessness • 50% lighter weight • Kink-free & easy to maneuver • Puncture resistant

The new standard in garden hose.

Q: Why do people love boxwood? A: The boxwood is one of the most popular ornamental shrubs in the United States, in part because it can grow just about anywhere if you pick the right variety for your region. Boxwood stay green all year, plus they’re low maintenance and deer-resistant.

Q: Are the topiaries at Disney World made of boxwood? A: Nope. In fact, most of Disney’s topiaries aren’t

shrubs at all. They’re actually steel frames packed tightly with moss and plugged with hundreds, sometimes thousands, of small plants—most commonly creeping fig. Some of the oldest topiaries at the Magic Kingdom are shaped out of the evergreen podocarpus, but not boxwood.

plants for sun

knock out roses

These easy-care beauties bloom all summer with no pruning. Best grown in fertile, sandy soil, Knock Outs come with single or double blossoms in pink, red, or yellow.

sea holly

Once established, this unique metallic blue perennial is as tough as a weed. If you plant it in sandy, rocky soil and avoid overwatering it, it will look amazing all summer.

white-striped century plant

This desert dweller with leaves tipped with sharp needles never needs watering. Live somewhere cold? Grow it in a pot so you can bring it inside during chilly spells.

muhly grass

Plant this Southwest native after spring rains cease so it doesn’t get soggy. Best en masse, the grass creates a cloud of pink when it blooms in autumn. 140 HGTV Magazine

mexican shellflower

This mid- to late-summer bloomer comes in eyepopping colors and has a striking spotted center. Perfect for a container, this annual isn’t fussy about soil and doesn’t need a lot of water to thrive.

‘white profusion’ butterfly bush

True to its name, this bushy, wilt-proof shrub attracts butterflies galore. Although it can take a few years to get established, it gets big fast, so consider cutting it close to the ground in late winter to keep it in check.

‘café au lait’ dahlia

Cut this sun lover for bouquets often. The more you trim it, the more flowers you’ll get. If winter temps in your region stay above freezing, it will come back year after year. In colder areas, store the bulbs inside for winter or treat them like annuals.

or shade

No matter how much light your yard gets, there are plenty of pretty plants you can grow.

leopard plant

lenten rose

Most shade-loving ground covers don’t flower much, but this one blooms in early spring. Expect it to pop up in the weeks before Easter. Its petals come in a range of colors, from burgundy to white.

golden japanese forest grass

Unlike ornamental grasses that are stiff and upright, this chartreuse charmer, which practically glows in the shade, has unusual tufted leaves that cascade downward. Bonus: Deer won’t eat it.

tuberous begonia

One of the few annuals with large, showy flowers that bloom in the shade, this begonia comes in cascading and upright varieties. There’s one for any spot, from a hanging basket to a border.

Because this perennial— which looks like a daisy— thrives in the shade, it can droop a bit in the midday heat. But it will perk up promptly as the sun goes down. Keep it in rich, consistently moist soil.

‘jack frost’ siberian bugloss

Perfectly suited for undertree canopies, this perennial has silvery white foliage that spreads to form a lush ground cover and slow-tofade blue nosegays that bloom in spring.

‘raspberry ice’ coralbells

Expect this perennial to grow up to two feet tall and just as wide, with veined deep purple leaves that resemble stained glass. It does as well in a flower bed as it does in a container.

kuma bamboo grass

This bamboo spreads fast— yes, even in the shade—so keep it in a planter. You’ll have a low-growing mini jungle in no time.
