cheers to

I can’t believe HGTV Magazine is 5 years old! It seems like just yesterday I was sitting in an office with a small but mighty start-up staff, brainstorming all kinds of ways to make a new home magazine. True, plenty of our early ideas ended up on the cutting room floor, but, amazingly, many that debuted in our very first issue, October/November 2011, are still super popular with readers today. Our Fun Decorating and Help Wanted sections, and three columns (“The High/Low List,” “Wow! What Color Is That?” and “How Bad Is It…”) have all been going strong since day one. Truth be told, we toiled away on that premiere issue for nearly a year before it printed so we could get it just right. I’m proud to say we ended up having to hurriedly print more issues because they were flying off newsstands! Five years later, fans of the magazine often say they have trouble throwing away or recycling issues of HGTV Magazine because there are so many projects they want to try. I have to tell you, this is the ultimate compliment to a magazine editor— especially this one, because even before this magazine was a magazine, the goal was to create something that gave people a ton of inspiring, clever, totally doable ideas on glossy pages loaded with big, colorful pictures. (And the pictures had to be big; that part was nonnegotiable!) About a million people subscribe to HGTV Magazine now, and a couple hundred thousand buy it on newsstands every month. I’d just like to say thank you! Our truly dedicated staff has worked hard to make it your favorite magazine. We’ll never get tired of dreaming up new designs, and—just like you do with the pillows on your sofa and the paint colors on your walls—we’ll always keep our pages looking fresh. Happy birthday, HGTV Magazine! And best wishes for many more to come.

dear

magazine,

Readers share their thoughts and tell us which stories inspired them most.

A color combo I spotted in your January/February issue [“Copy the Curb Appeal”] inspired me to repaint my home’s exterior—which hadn’t been touched in 25 years—using two similar hues. It really needed a facelift, and I love the new look! Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

—Cherie Elliott, San Bernardino, CA

After months of admiring the pretty front doors in “Come On In,” I finally took the plunge and transformed my boring brown door into a cheery teal one. It makes me smile every time I pull in the driveway.

Rose Quartz by Benjamin Moore

—Davena Vowels, La Grange, KY

Your May issue had so many fun ideas, but my favorite was the living room with white walls and eye-popping trim in “Wow! What Color Is That?” Such a cool twist! I liked it so much that I painted the trim around the windows in my beige kitchen vibrant orange, and it looks spectacular.

My husband and I are always searching garage sales and flea markets for hidden treasures, so we loved the June House Tour “Seeing Style in the Junk.” The way the Bradfords mixed old and new in their home gave us great ideas for incorporating our antique finds in a way that feels fresh.

—Julia Lambert, West Chester, PA

—Jane M. Vidrine, Baton Rouge, LA

My reclaimed-wood dining table looks empty—but I think I found the solution in July/August’s “Secrets to Fixer Upper Style.” In one room, Joanna Gaines styled a farmhouse table with plates displayed in long rectangular boxes. I’m excited to try it. —Julie Lombardi, Columbus, OH

14 HGTV Magazine

The chair you spray-painted lime green [Key Lime by Rust-Oleum] in June’s “So You Want to Paint…” reminded me of an old wrought iron piece I had in storage. It was easy to paint, and now it brightens up my yard instead of collecting dust.

Most of my subscriptions end up in the recycling bin, but never my HGTV Magazine. In the June issue, I got a kick out of the yearbook photos in “HGTV Stars: Graduation Flashback.” Having also graduated in the ’90s, I can totally relate to Nicole Curtis’ photo. I remember my mock turtleneck and softly lit portrait a little too well.

letters Finding my HGTV Magazine in the mailbox makes my day every time. I never skip Sara’s editor’s page. I love hearing what she has to say and always end up thinking that we’d be great friends if we ever met. —Lauren Krabill, West Liberty, OH

Your “One Porch, Three Budgets” story in July/August encouraged me to jazz up mine. I had some wood pallets lying around, so I made a rolling coffee table out of them like you did and painted mine bright green. —Kristy Mantle, Stoughton, WI

Thanks for sharing Joanna Gaines’ chicken potpie recipe in your April issue. Now that the weather is getting cooler, I whipped it up for my family for dinner. Yum! This recipe is a keeper. —Susan Sheets, Silver Spring, MD

Just like the couple in the article “Help! Our Bedroom Was Last on Our List,” in the January/February issue, my husband and I hadn’t done anything exciting with our master bedroom. This story gave me the nudge I needed to tackle the makeover, and we turned our blah beige bedroom into a blue-andwhite retreat.

I’m obsessed with the glossy pages full of vibrant color in every issue of HGTV Magazine. It’s the only publication I save. I reference old stories again and again when I’m tackling a home project or looking for decorating ideas. Thanks for the best magazine ever!

After remodeling my living room, I turned to your magazine to find the right finishing touches. The affordable graphic pillows in May’s “The High/ Low List” were just what the space needed—a pop of color and pattern.

—Teresa Gedek, Fishers, IN

—Lauren Watts, Indialantic, FL

My husband was inspired by the leather strap shelf in April’s “Blogger Projects We Love!” and he made a few for our son’s room. They’ve become the focal point in the space, and it’s heartwarming to see shelves made by Dad hanging on the wall.

The Pendleton towel you featured in July/August’s “The High/Low List” has such an interesting print. I recently moved into a new apartment, and I bought the towel as a gift to myself because I liked it so much.

Our guest room hadn’t been updated in a while, and I’d been avoiding redecorating it by keeping the door shut. But when I saw the April cover, I couldn’t wait to change up the bedding with the same pretty mix of navy and coral. I’m a huge fan of the color palette.

I loved the black-and-white-striped walls in Vern Yip’s kitchen [March’s “A New Kitchen, Vern’s Way”] so much that I decided to paint the same bold stripes on my entryway walls.

Mischief & Mayhem Emojis

Laura tapped into the ever-popular emoji trend in her execution. Instead of trying to pick just one or two favorite emojis, she made the spray-painted pumpkins adjustable with magnetic facial features!

To get in the spooky spirit, DIY Network’s Made + Remade blog put 5 avid crafters in a head-to-head challenge where they were asked to use iconic craft pumpkins and decorative accents, all available at Michaels, to create a boo-tiful sight representing their own fab-boo-lously festive flare.

LAURA JAMES assistant editor for HGTV.com and DIYNetwork.com

Quick & Glamorous Thumbtacks FARIMA ALAVI assistant editor for HGTV.com and DIYNetwork.com

Farima and Laura teamed up to use gold tacks on a teal pumpkin and silver tacks on a white pumpkin to create these chic designs. Best part is, you don’t have to be an artist to create these works of art—each overall pattern looks great even with imperfections.

RYAN REED editor for HGTV.com and DIYNetwork.com

Multicolored Gumball Machine

A sweet twist on a spooky staple! This pumpkin dressed up as a gumball machine for Halloween. Using an upside-down flower pot as the base, Ryan glued real gumballs to the outside of the pumpkin to create the look of the jar for a colorful and tasty pop!

if your jack-o’-lantern could talk It would hand out these tricks on how to treat it best.

Stay sharp, people.

I wouldn’t mind losing some weight.

After cleaning out the pumpkin’s guts, shave down its inner walls until they are only about an inch thick for easier carving. Most carving kits include a scraping tool to make slimming down a snap, but an ice cream scoop (and a little elbow grease) will also do the job.

A serrated blade is ideal for carving— even a steak knife will do—but using a variety of tools will help you create something original. Try a drill and bits in various sizes to make polka dots, or use clay-sculpting tools from the crafts store to scrape translucent designs onto the skin.

Got a light?

Use battery-operated candles instead of real ones. They won’t burn your fingers, and their fluttering “flames” are windproof. Or arrange a strand of blinking multicolor LED string lights inside the pumpkin for a festive glow.

Recycle me.

GETTY IMAGES

Don’t trash your spooky squash! Nutrient-rich pumpkins can be used for compost and as fertilizer. Cut yours into 1-inch chunks, and bury them in your flower beds. Or see if your public works department has a pumpkinrecycling program.

A little bleach helps me last.

Because bacteria multiply fast, a grinning gourd can develop mushy, rotting spots in a matter of days. Slow the spread by wiping the skin and the inner walls with a bleach solution— 1 tablespoon bleach to 1 quart water—after carving. Wet weather also speeds up decay, so bring your jack-o’-lantern inside when it’s raining.

With this top-down method from Ashley Eldridge of the Chimney Safety Institute of America, you can achieve a brilliant blaze using only wood and matches. Make sure the wood is dry. Store it outside, off the ground, in a loose stack for at least six months before burning it. STEP 1 Arrange a row of the biggest logs on the grate in the hearth, leaving

STEP 2 Stack slightly smaller logs on top, arranging them perpendicular to the first layer. STEP 3 For the next two layers, add kindling (twigs and narrow logs), alternating so each row is perpendicular to the one below it,

with each layer smaller than the one below it, so the stack comes to a peak. STEP 4 Add the final layer, tinder, which is made of small pieces of wood, like chips and shavings. (The top of the stack should be about halfway up the height of the firebox.) The top layer will light easily with a match, so you won’t need newspaper. As the fire burns, it will ignite the wood below it, producing a robust blaze.

…pop a champagne cork First make sure the bottle is properly chilled, says Cheryl S. Stanley, certified sommelier with the Court of Master Sommeliers. Submerge a room-temperature bottle in a bucket filled half with ice and half with water for 30 minutes. Or let it sit on its side in the fridge overnight.

STEP 1 Hold the bottle at a 45-degree angle pointed away from your body; no one should be in front of you. The correct angle will prevent an overflow of bubbles and give you control when air escapes.

STEP 2 Peel off the foil. With

your left hand, place a dish towel over the cork and the cage so if the cork makes a fast escape, it will get trapped in the towel. Place your left thumb on top of the cage. Unwind the key of the cage with your right hand so it’s loose around the bottle, but don’t remove it.

STEP 3 Holding the cork and the cage in place with your left hand over the towel, grab the bottom of the bottle with your right hand, and twist it back and forth. (Turn the bottle, not the cork.) You’ll feel the pressure build through the bottle and up to the cork. Eventually the cork will give and produce a soft pfft sound. Hold the bottle at 45 degrees for a few more seconds as the gases escape.

…get a pen stain out of jeans Covering the stain with a few spritzes of aerosol hair spray is the tried-and-true method, says Ingrid Johnson, a professor of textiles at the Fashion Institute of Technology. You’ll need a formula with a high alcohol content (it should be one of the first ingredients listed), and ideally you want to treat the stain while the ink is still wet. Douse the spot with the spray, and let it dry. Don’t touch it! “Rubbing it will only embed the stain into the fabric even more,” says Johnson. Almost immediately, the alcohol will pull the ink to the surface of the fabric, where it will bubble up and dry within minutes. Then you can flake it off with the edge of a knife.

…polish silverware without silver polish You can make silverware gleam again using this electromagnetic science experiment courtesy of Leslie Reichert, author of The Joy of Green Cleaning. Line a baking pan with aluminum foil. Bring a pot of vinegar  ––  enough to fill your baking pan about an inch or two deep  ––  almost to a boil, then add a tablespoon of baking soda. Pour the solution into the pan, then add the silverware. The solution will cause the tarnish on the silver to transfer to the foil. Remove the pieces once the tarnish is gone, rinse them with cool water, and pat dry.

…keep the ends of a rug from curling up “Rugs often spend three to six months rolled up in a warehouse, and they need time to flatten out,” says Cameron Capel, vice president of national accounts at Capel Rugs. First try reverse rolling it, keeping it rolled in the opposite direction, for 48 hours. If that doesn’t do the trick, lay the rug down on your floor, then set a stack of heavy books on each corner for a few days to press the corners back into place. If one corner is extra pesky, try folding it under first. Or pick up NeverCurl ($13, nevercurl.com), a thin, rigid, L-shaped piece of plastic that attaches with adhesive to the underside of a rug corner to straighten it out.

…remove glued-on labels from jars A solution of rubbing alcohol and Goo Gone will de-gunk most glass and plastic, according to Marie Browning, crafter and author of Mason Jar Gifts. Combine 2 ounces of Goo Gone with 9 ounces of rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle. Spritz the label enough to completely soak it, let it sit for a few minutes, then rub the label off with a paper towel. Repeat if needed. If the label won’t budge, let the whole jar soak in the solution for 10 minutes before rubbing off the label with a paper towel.

…untangle a knot in a chain A pair of sewing needles and a few drops of oil (olive, vegetable, or baby) will help you get your favorite necklace back in rotation, says Amanda Gizzi, a spokesperson for Jewelers of America. STEP 1 Place the chain on a flat, hard surface, and gently rub a small amount of oil on the knot. The oil will serve as a lubricant to loosen the tangle. STEP 2 Find the center of the knot, and use two sewing needles to loosen and pull it from its center. Your goal is to expand the knot slowly; be patient or you could make the gnarl nastier. STEP 3 When you’re knot-free, dip the oily part of the necklace in warm water (mild soap is optional), rinse, and pat dry.

…pack a dress without wrinkling it Linen is guaranteed to rumple, so this method, courtesy of the Fashion Institute of Technology’s Ingrid Johnson, is best for knit, jersey, wool, and synthetic blends.

STEP 1 Place the dress facedown on a bed. Fold the sleeves in, then fold each side in 2 to 4 more inches.

…cut perfect brownies

Prevent gooey crumbs from mucking up your bars with these tips from Sabrina Sexton, a program director at the Institute of Culinary Education in New York City.

STEP 2 Lay a sweater or shawl (whichever you intend to bring along) on top of the dress.

STEP 1 Lightly butter the bottom and the sides of a baking pan, then cut a piece of parchment paper so it fits snugly inside the pan with two generous ends of overhang. Butter the top of the parchment. Prepare the batter, pour it in the pan, and bake according to the recipe instructions. STEP 2 Let the brownies cool in the pan for at least an hour. Grabbing both ends of the parchment overhang, carefully lift the cooled brownies out of the pan, and place the parchment and the brownies on a cutting board. STEP 3 Using a large knife, such as a chef’s knife or a carving knife—but nothing serrated—make a single cut straight through the brownies. Do not use the knife to saw back and forth. Between cuts, run the knife under warm water until it’s clean, then wipe the blade with a dish towel before making the next cut.

STEP 3 Roll the two garments together from bottom to top. The sweater or shawl will act as a buffer to prevent the dress from getting crushed. Place the dress on the top or the side of your suitcase, away from heavy items like shoes.

What’s for dinner?

…to put a bird feeder right outside your window? Studies suggest that at least 365 million birds in the United States die each year from colliding with buildings, usually the windows. But surprisingly, hanging a feeder close to a window helps prevent crashes. That’s because birds commonly hit windows while taking off from a feeder, not while attempting to land on one. The closer you place a feeder to your window, the less likely it is that your feathered friends will hurt themselves when they fly away, says Matt Johnson, education manager for Audubon South Carolina. The ideal spot for hanging? Three feet or less from your home or at least 30 feet away from it.

…to eat your kids’ Halloween candy without telling them? It may not seem like a big deal to sneak a Milky Way—or three—from your child’s Halloween haul. But depending on his or her age and temperament, it could be. While a 12-yearold probably won’t freak out if you take a piece, 5-, 6-, and 7-year-olds can be possessive of their stuff. Either way, “if you get caught, it’s bad news because we teach children not to steal,” says parenting expert Betsy Brown Braun, author of You’re Not the Boss of Me. Even if you don’t get caught red (hot!)handed, lots of kids count their candy and may figure out something’s missing without having seen you take it. Brown Braun suggests using the holiday to teach kids a lesson in sharing: Something as simple as “I share lots of things with you, so will you please share with me?” can go a long way beyond October 31.

…to store paint in the garage? A properly sealed can of paint will keep for several years if protected from extreme temperatures, meaning those below 35˚F and above 120˚F, says Debbie Zimmer, director of communications and alliances for The Dow Chemical Company’s Paint Quality Institute. Frigid or scorching conditions can mess with paint’s texture, leaving it thick, lumpy, and difficult to use. Unless your garage is climate-controlled, Zimmer suggests stashing leftover paint indoors in a spot that stays between 50˚F and 80˚F. Sealing the can correctly also helps paint last. First wipe excess paint from the rim with a damp cloth. Place plastic wrap over the top, then tap the lid shut with a rubber mallet. When the lid is secure, turn the can upside down and store it that way. The paint will create an airtight seal against the lid.

…to sleep with your jewelry on? Tossing and turning while accessorized can take a toll on your rings, earrings, and necklaces—and your skin. Continuous contact with even the softest sheets has an abrasive effect that can cause gemstones and metals to lose their luster over time, says Mark Mann of the Gemological Institute of America. Delicate chains and drop earrings can also break if they get caught on blankets. Giving jewelry the night off benefits your skin, too, since debris, oils, and bacteria can build up then rub off during the night, resulting in a rash. But dermatologist Nada Elbuluk, M.D., an assistant professor at New York University School of Medicine, says everyone’s skin reacts differently (if at all). “It depends on the type of jewelry, the size, and the individual’s skin sensitivities,” she says. Even if you find it’s fine to sleep with your baubles on, remove them before showering, since soap can dull metal and stone.

…to wash your dish towels with your clothes?

…to prune flowering shrubs and trees in the fall?

Since kitchen towels touch bacteria-laden surfaces—the sink, messy countertops, food-covered hands—they should get a hot wash, says Mary Gagliardi, Clorox’s Dr. Laundry. In order to kill certain germs, you’ll also need to add bleach since most household water isn’t typically hot enough (it needs to be at least 140˚F) to disinfect on its own. It’s fine to toss white towels (even ones with stripes are usually OK) in a hot cycle with your white clothes plus detergent and bleach. As for colored towels, Gagliardi recommends hot water for them, too, along with colorsafe bleach and detergent, to get them clean. But keep them separate from your colored clothes, which likely call for warm or cold water on their care labels.

Put away the pruners. Fall isn’t the ideal time to prune anything, says Pete Smith, urban forestry program manager at the Arbor Day Foundation. While there’s nothing wrong with removing a diseased or dead branch any time of year, the best time to prune most flowering shrubs and trees is in the winter, when they’re dormant—that is, when their leaves, which they need for energy, have fallen off. The exceptions, says Smith, are firstblooming spring bushes and trees like magnolias, dogwoods, forsythias, and azaleas, which “set their flower buds for next year in the fall, so if you prune them in fall or winter, you risk snipping off next year’s flowers.” Prune these guys immediately after they’ve finished blooming, usually in late spring.

not bad at all! (if the towels are white)

pretty bad! (if they’re colored)

…to not weatherproof your leather boots? It’s actually better to leave leather just as you bought it. “Applying products with weatherproofing properties will change the way the leather looks and breathes,” says Nick Horween, vice president of Horween Leather Company. “Don’t do it.” Here’s why: Besides the fact that weatherproofing makes leather considerably less breathable—and breathability is one of the reasons it’s so comfortable—it also can darken leather and add shine. Plus, your boots’ soles may not have been constructed to stand up to snow and rain, no matter how much weatherproofing spray you apply. Goodquality leather has some built in water-resistance anyway, so the smarter option is to clean and condition it when it starts looking dry to restore its luster and help it maintain its wicking properties.

our living room is full of leftovers

Richard and Tyra with Ricky, 2

This fun-loving couple had nothing in common with their bland living room and its make-do decor. See how we brought the space to life.

n

early two years after moving into their 1950s colonial in Montclair, NJ, Richard and Tyra Manso had barely touched their living room, which featured a mishmash of oversize leather seating from Richard’s bachelor days, a lonely end table from their old Brooklyn, NY, pad, and a too-small area rug from who remembers where. As their 2-year-old son, Ricky, laid claim to much of the rest of the house, Richard and Tyra decided it was time to focus on their neglected living room. “We knew the space had tons of potential—lots of square footage, plenty of light, and pretty hardwood floors—but we were hardly using it,” says Tyra. They dreamed of an adultlike oasis where they could have friends over or unwind at the end of the day without tripping over a toy truck. Our plan for Tyra and Richard: Clear out the clunky furniture, banish the beige walls, relinquish the red rug, and transform the space into a room that looks pulled together, not thrown together.

To unify the different styles of paneling and trim work in the room, we used the same charcoal gray paint on three walls, all the trim, and the fireplace mantel. The deep gray helps the large rectangular room—it’s 15 feet by 23 1/2 feet—feel much cozier.

wall color Down Pipe by Farrow & Ball

sofas

Facing sofas give the room a dose of formality, but because they’re different shapes and colors, the look isn’t stuffy or too traditional. The white camelback sofa is from Ballard Designs, and the blue velvet one is from West Elm.

wallpaper

“When we heard wallpaper was going up, we were a little nervous,” says Richard. “All we could imagine was the ugly ’80s stuff in our bathrooms that the previous owners had put up.” But they breathed a sigh of relief once they saw this Schumacher paper covering the accent wall. “The pattern feels exotic and special,” says Tyra.

fireplace

It’s amazing how a simple switch—like replacing the old brass-and-glass doors with a geometric screen from Scenario Home—modernizes a hearth. In addition to painting the mantel gray, we changed the brick surround from black to cream (Titanium by Benjamin Moore).

answers 1. a. shiplap; b. beadboard. Shiplap generally describes rough-sawed boards made of inexpensive wood (usually pine) that run horizontally. Beadboard is distinguished by the thin vertical grooves (called beads) cut into the wood.

2. a. otomi; b. suzani. Otomi embroidery depicts a range of animals in one or multiple bright colors on a solid background. Suzani features a printed floral motif. 3. a. aqua; b. seafoam green. Aqua

6. a. sputnik; b. starburst. Although its name traces back to the 1950s satellite, in the lighting world, sputnik refers to a metal rod with a bulb at the end. Sputnik lights sport several sputniks; starburst lights have a mix of sputniks and rods without bulbs.

7. a. windmill; b. basket weave. In a windmill tile pattern, four rectangular tiles are laid around a square tile to resemble a turning windmill. A basket weave pattern features rectangular tiles laid so they appear to weave under and over one another, with square tiles filling the gaps in between. 8. a. tuxedo; b. chesterfield. A tuxedo sofa is a slim, squared-off update on the chesterfield, which is known for its tufting and rolled arms that are the same height as its back. 9. a. keystone; b. camelback. chair. Both the Eames chair and the Saarinen Tulip chair were designed in the 1950s with the space age in mind. The former, created by American husband-and-wife team Charles and Ray Eames, is known for its modern twist on legs. FinnishAmerican designer Eero Saarinen’s famous Tulip features a distinct pedestal rather than legs.

rococo-style legs distinguish the earlier chair, named for Louis XV (king of France from 1715 to 1774) from its neoclassical counterpart, named for Louis XVI (king of France from 1774 to 1793), which instead

Each has two colors, but buffalo check usually includes black, has larger squares, and often appears on heavy fabrics, like flannel. Gingham is usually featured on lighter materials, such as cotton napkins.

12. a. pedestal; b. trestle. A pedestal table refers to one with a central post. A trestle table has legs at both ends that are connected by a beam, also called a trestle. 13. a. foo dog; b. staffordshire dog.

Foo is a rough translation of the Chinese word for Buddha. Foo dog statues are often displayed in pairs to offer protection. Staffordshire dogs, also usually seen in twos, are ceramics named after the county in England where they were first made and sold in the Victorian era. Most depict Cavalier King Charles spaniels with color variations in their “fur,” while foo dogs are usually one color.

14. a. seagrass; b. jute. Both are

made with plant fibers, but seagrass is stiffer, rougher, and more durable, while jute feels and looks softer.

win this house!

From August 8 to September 26, 2016, you can enter for a chance to win this coastal home. Go to diynetwork .com/blogcabin to enter and to see all the rooms.

The house is situated on about four acres of waterfront property on the Florida Panhandle.

his year marks the 10th anniversary of the DIY Network Blog Cabin  ––  and a big year calls for a big reno. The approximately 3,500-square-foot seaside stunner, located on Florida’s Gulf Coast in the town of Panacea, didn’t start out as picturesque as you see it here. Yes, the house had beautiful water views and plenty of interior space. But it also had a serious case of the ’90s-decorating blues. Plus, it desperately needed to be brought up to code. That’s where you came in! Actually, 8 million of you: That’s how many fans voted on the new look for the home, inside and out. Phase one of the overhaul involved an exterior facelift, including replacing the dilapidated siding and installing a new roof. For phase two, a team of HGTV and DIY Network stars, including Chris Grundy, Chris Lambton, Josh Temple, and Alison Victoria, swooped in to landscape, remodel, and decorate. HGTV Magazine pitched in too, bringing this bedroom’s winning look to life. 88 HGTV Magazine

bedroom

This 14 ½-foot-by-17-foot space began to look a lot beachier after we installed 5-foot-tall paneling and painted it crisp white (Greek Villa by HGTV HOME by Sherwin-Williams). Then we painted the upper part of the walls and the ceiling deep ocean blue (Amalfi by HGTV HOME by SherwinWilliams). To give the wood bed from overstock .com a custom look, we painted it white and added sand-color Bella-Dura grass cloth to the headboard, finishing the edges with nailhead trim (go to hgtv.com/diy-headboard for the how-to). The blue-and-white block print quilt and shams, the cutout wood pendant, and the striped rug from Jaipur Living add to the coastal charm.

Every guest room needs a comfy chair to read in—or to toss clothes on. A paisley pillow punches up the West Elm armchair. As a moneysaving DIY project, we faked expensive custom corner shelves by hanging four IKEA floating shelves so their edges meet at a 90˚ angle. To accommodate the narrow wall on the left, we trimmed two of the shelves before hanging them. 90 HGTV Magazine

5 reasons we love this living room Soft gray walls and crisp white molding are a fail-safe backdrop for any style, any color scheme.

That big mirror on the mantel! With its white frame, it mimics the window nearby and bounces light around. Plus, the crown arch shape is more interesting than a regular rectangle.

The pattern mix is nonstop but doesn’t feel over the top. The secret? All the patterns have some white in them, and the other colors are pulled from one source: the triangle-print rug.

The coffee table styling is spot-on. You can’t go wrong with a pretty round tray, a place for remotes, some greenery, and a stack of books with a brass figurine perched on top! There’s fun extra seating. The two zigzag-print ottomans from Target are wide, comfy, and so much cuter than surplus dining chairs dragged in for guests.

5 reasons we love this kitchen The pair of extra-large brass cone pendants is personality-packed. These, from Circa Lighting, measure 24 ½ inches in diameter and give the room a dose of drama.

Two-inch-thick counters are luxe! Get the look with natural stone, engineered quartz, even laminate. Surfaces with a touch of gray keep an all-white kitchen from appearing antiseptic.

Brass- or gold-finish hardware looks so chic, especially on cabinets painted white. The pulls and knobs are from D. Lawless Hardware, and the pot filler and faucets are by Waterstone.

The airy wood-and-metal stools from Arteriors play off similar materials in the room. And that island is smart! It’s part storage, part table, and all four stools can scoot underneath.

Oak floors with a natural wax finish mix modern and rustic. True, they’re trickier to maintain than tile (they could stain if soaked with water), but the warm look is hard to beat.

ways to dress up a staircase Wallpaper your risers—but don’t go insane dealing with glue. Peel-and-stick vinyl options offer the same look without the headache, and they hold up to scuffs, too.

Give steps the ombré treatment. Sample pots are just enough to paint risers. Use five or six from the same paint-chip strip to get a cohesive look.

5

Install a statement runner. To figure out how much carpet you’ll need, add the height of each riser to the depth of each tread you’re going to cover.

Count them off. House numbers drilled into the risers offer a little humor as you head upstairs. Choose a single style or go with different sizes, colors, and fonts.

Tile them. Try an assortment of patterns, and secure them with tile adhesive and an easy-tocontrol sanded caulk. Or hire a pro, especially if you have curved stairs.

5 reasons we love this dining room

The banquette looks like it’s floating. How? It’s supported by a beam built into the wall that eliminates the need for a base. (The brass legs are just for show.) The sound wave fabric was customized on spoonflower.com.

The tile floor is really practical. Laid in a herringbone pattern with barely visible grout lines, these textured porcelain tiles look like stained-wood planks but are durable and easy to clean.

That’s some clever art! Nope, it’s not fine art photography. It’s a still from the movie Jaws blown up to 36 inches by 48 inches. To mimic the look, go to mptvimages.com, where you can buy downloads of movie stills.

This green grass cloth wall makes the space feel breezy during the day and romantic while candles flicker at night.

The table-andchair pairing is unexpected. Cognaccolor leather chairs with steel legs and a gleaming white tulip table? Yes and yes!

5 reasons we love this bedroom The keystone-shaped headboard is glamorous but not too fancy. It’s covered in easy-care indoor-outdoor fabric (genius!), and the nailhead trim gives it definition against a similar-color wall.

There are lots of yummy textures layered on the bed, including ice blue velvet euro shams, a cotton matelassé quilt, and a navy velvet throw. A block print lumbar pillow (this one is made with Galbraith & Paul fabric) is a super-stylish finishing touch.

Shiplap walls make a space feel cozy—just as a bedroom should. These are painted Right White by Restoration Hardware.

Those curtains! A big pattern in the bedroom shouldn’t keep you up at night. Just choose a design in a soothing palette, like this blue-hued ikat from Kravet.

The transparent chair is a cool move, especially when space is tight. Plus, a desk chair that doesn’t look office-y is a wise pick for a bedroom.

fun ways to paint an interior door Totally transform a set of plain doors with a coat of mint green (Spruce Green by Benjamin Moore) and faux-plaster ceiling medallions each with a knob in the center.

Paint the panels with chalkboard paint (Black by Rust-Oleum Specialty Chalkboard Brush-On) and the rest a bright shade (Orioles by Behr). Doodle, erase, and doodle some more.

5

Pick a bold color for the inside of your front door, too. This fire-engine red with a high-gloss finish (Million Dollar Red by Benjamin Moore) is a cheery idea.

If your door is open all the time, incorporate it into your room design. For this one, all you need is a strip of painter’s tape and a sunny color (Brilliant Impression by Dutch Boy Paints).

Even a white hollow-core door can look rich when covered in stripes. Mark off your design with painter’s tape, then fill in the exposed areas with black (Tricorn Black by Sherwin-Williams).

5 reasons we love this house It has a sweet dormer window. This architectural detail is like the cherry on top of the house. The board-and-batten shutters are perfectly sized for each window. (Just look at the tiny set!) It doesn’t hurt that they’re painted the prettiest shade of sky blue (Drizzle by Sherwin-Williams).

The arched stained-wood door with its seededglass panes is 100% charming. Check out doors4home.com for similar options.

Hibiscus topiaries with braided stems are hard not to love. Pinch off any growth from the trunks to help them keep their shape. LIZ NEMETH

Rocking chairs and a simple railing that doesn’t compete with the white HardiePlank siding (painted Oyster White by Sherwin-Williams) make the porch inviting. Bonus points for ceramic pots that match the blue shutters.

how to make rustic look

refined It’s not all plaid and barnwood at this lakeside condo. See how an Alabama homeowner added shots of posh to her out-of-the-way address.

Georgia and David with Caroline, 5

g

eorgia Carlee and her husband, David, hadn’t planned on uprooting their family of three to move to the shore of Lake Martin in Alexander City, AL. For 15 years the Carlees had been perfectly content with their life in Santa Rosa Beach, FL. But after their daughter, Caroline, was born, they began hunting for a weekend/vacation house in the Lake Martin area, a four-hour drive from their Florida home. That’s when Georgia became enamored of the family-oriented community. It wasn’t that the 2,200-square-foot condominium was in turnkey condition. In fact, the space hadn’t been updated since it was built in 1982. “Other buyers didn’t know what to do with it,” says Georgia, a designer who owns her own firm. Although the unit had 27-foot ceilings (amazing, right?!), its two bedrooms and two bathrooms felt scanty considering the square footage. “I’m guessing people thought it was too small, but I knew we could get another floor in there,” she says. They also added shiplap to the walls and ceiling  ––  plus plenty of modern touches that make it feel like a stylish year-round home rather than a rustic weekend retreat. “I purposely did not decorate it like a typical lake house,” says Georgia. “There are no ‘What happens at the lake stays at the lake’ signs here!”

living room

Because the condo’s living spaces are one open expanse, Georgia kept the color scheme minimal: White Dove by Benjamin Moore on the walls, some of which she whitewashed, and Heritage Red by Benjamin Moore on the interior doors. A leather Lee Industries sofa and a rattan Palecek chair with houndstooth cushions sit on a cowhide rug layered over an old multicolor striped rug. The room also holds a prized antique find: a 14-foot-tall bamboo ladder, which for the first time ever Georgia can display vertically. The white column lamps are from Pizitz Home & Cottage in Seaside, FL.

120 HGTV Magazine

kitchen

The old kitchen was small and dark, so the Carlees gutted the space, knocking down a wall and adding windows with front-and-center views of the lake. The island and the perimeter cabinets are topped with brownish gray quartzite, and the island’s base is painted the same shade (Heritage Red by Benjamin Moore) as the home’s interior doors. To counter the oil-rubbed-bronze knobs and pulls from Restoration Hardware, Georgia chose white opalescent tiles for the backsplash. The white faux-leather barstools are from LexMod. An antique “Rollercoaster” sign “describes our life in a word,” Georgia says.

master bedroom

Georgia and David chose the smaller bedroom on the first floor because of its private deck overlooking the lake, then added a pair of windows above the Oly caned headboard to bring in more natural light. The rest of the room is a blend of new and old: The yew wood dresser beside the bed was snapped up at a fire sale in North Carolina, the Waterford crystal lamp on top of it belonged to Georgia’s parents, and the rope-and-wood bench is by Four Hands. The throw pillows are a mix from CB2, Serena & Lily, and Pine Cone Hill. 122 HGTV Magazine

guest bedroom

This room boasts the house’s only colorful wall (Heritage Red by Benjamin Moore). Georgia had the headboard made at Ava’s Attic, a store near Destin, FL, that constructs furniture out of repurposed wood. The mirror next to it, with a peeled and chipped tin frame, is from Reclamations, a favorite furniture shop in Highlands, NC. The deer silhouette resting on top of the antique pine dresser is from Pickle Patch Market in Sylacauga, AL.

I design a lot of coastal homes. I see so much blue that I wanted the opposite in my home—I needed red! —Georgia

caroline’s bedroom

“Caroline is a girly girl who also likes to pick up worms,” says Georgia. The pink duvet and pillowcases satisfy the sweet, while the hand-me-down pine bed and the pale yellow vintage dresser give the room a slightly rougher edge. Georgia bought the Every Day I Love You wood print when she was pregnant with Caroline. The cubbies to the left of the hooks were built to max out the space, but they've turned into a favorite hangout spot. “Kids fight over who gets to be in there,” says Georgia.

There isn’t a closet in here, which is fine. We just added hooks and chests for her things. —Georgia

bathroom

Most of the ceilings in the house are shiplap stained Provincial by Minwax, but Georgia flipped the script in this space, staining the walls and painting the ceiling. A pebble-tile floor and a quartzite countertop add a little luxe to the room. The portrait of Georgia’s late mother, Judi, is for straight-up comic effect. “My mother had a big personality, and she always used to try giving this portrait to David with the joke that he could throw darts at it,” she says. “I’d like to think she’d find it hilarious that I hung it above a toilet.”

deck

This space just off the kitchen gets more foot traffic than any room in the house. “I’ve had friends tell me, ‘I’ve never been in your living room,’ ” Georgia says. The Summer Classics wicker chairs have cushions covered in red Sunbrella fabric and are paired with royal blue patterned pillows from Lacefield Designs and Loloi. The coffee table (it used to be a horse trough!) stores the cushions and pillows at night, and the outdoor rug is from wayfair.com.

Learn the secrets of do-your-own-thing design from this clever-thinking Austin, TX, homeowner.

PHOTOGRAPHS BY DAVID A. LAND STYLED BY JENNIFER DeCLEENE

living room

Merrilee doesn’t limit herself to one style—and definitely not one color palette. “I need pops of color everywhere,” she says. So she painted her wall-spanning bookcase pink grapefruit (for a similar look, try Mineral Red by Pratt & Lambert), hung dandelionhued chinoiserie drapes that date back to the ’80s, added a pair of vintage navy armchairs, and put down an antique area rug featuring every color of the rainbow. Subdued details like a gray velvet sofa, which belonged to Merrilee’s grandmother, and a seagrass rug help balance out the vibrancy. The modern sputnik light is from Practical Props in North Hollywood, CA.

M

errilee McGehee’s home is in a constant state of creative flux. “One time my husband, Pittman, came home, and I’d swapped the living room and the dining room,” she says. “He may have been thrown when he walked in, but he’s gotten used to change.” In short: Merrilee, an interior designer and artist, likes to keep it fresh. She’s constantly coming up with design surprises  ––  kooky wall murals, unpredictable paint colors, and brave pattern mash-ups  ––  to keep her clients (and her family) guessing. Her own 2,500-squarefoot 1940s bungalow in Austin, TX, is a laboratory for her just-do-what-you-love style. “A 1960s credenza, an antique chest, and modern art in the same room? You bet,” she says. Luckily her family is happy to be along for the ride. “Pittman doesn’t always get my ideas, but he trusts me, even when they’re really out there,” she says. “And the kids love that our home is never boring.”

Merrilee and Pittman with Clementine, 6, and Finnegan, 10

HAIR AND MAKEUP: JESSICA PIRKL LINDSAY

Merrilee, who got a bachelor’s degree in fine art from the University of Texas in Austin, created this 5-foot-by-6-foot piece using more than 5,000 colored pencils glued to wood. She started by painting the wood glossy black—the spaces left blank create the letters. It hangs in the living room above a rosewood credenza found at an antiques store in Austin.

132 HGTV Magazine

dining room

For this room, Merrilee wanted something unplanned and abstract, so she picked a quirky assortment of paint colors, mapped out a plan in her head, sketched the lines on the wall, and painted a mural of crisscrossing stripes. Then she peppered the space with some of her favorite vintage finds: a travertine pedestal table found on Craigslist, Bauhaus-style chairs from Uptown Modern in Austin, a gilded mirror that she picked up at the Round Top Antiques Fair in Texas, and sconces pilfered from her mother-in-law’s garage.

HGTV Magazine 133

kitchen

Replacing the existing cabinetry was beyond her budget, so Merrilee kept the cabinet boxes and swapped out the doors and the drawers, then coated everything in deep blue (New Providence Navy by Benjamin Moore). The countertops are a mix of Carrara marble along the perimeter and butcher block from IKEA on the island. The island base is painted Decorator’s White by Benjamin Moore, and she used the same color on the pine floors in a high-gloss deck and porch formula with epoxy, which makes them super durable. The brass knobs and pulls are from House of Antique Hardware, and the striped runner is from Dash & Albert.

house tours

pantry

This space used to be the laundry room, but because it has a door that leads to the backyard, the McGehees thought it would be better suited for entertaining. So they installed cabinets and a butcher-block counter from IKEA to make a bar. The walls and the ceiling are painted muted rose pink (Venetian Rose by Benjamin Moore), and the floral wool rug is from World Market. As for the doorway’s inspiration, “I was going through a Moroccan phase,” says Merrilee. She drew the outline and had her contractor cut the drywall.

HGTV Magazine 135

breakfast nook

To cozy up this corner, Merrilee and Pittman built a banquette with a neighbor’s help. Merrilee had its purple linen, from Calico Corners, treated to make it wipeable, like oilcloth. The tulip table is from White on White in New York City, but when the top cracked, Merrilee replaced it with a precut round of pine from Home Depot. “I love mixing materials,” she says. “Stained wood paired with white metal really appeals to me.” She scored the chairs from a thrift shop—$20 for the pair—and had them reupholstered in a posh David Hicks fabric. A framed piece of vintage Verner Panton fabric hangs front and center.

136 HGTV Magazine

house tours

exterior

The house originally had black shutters and shiny white siding that showed every speck of dirt. So the McGehees repainted it forgiving matte gray (Fieldstone by Benjamin Moore), then chose dark green (Olympus Green by Benjamin Moore) for the shutters. “I like in-between colors,” says Merrilee. “This is such a deep green, you might think it’s black from afar.” She plopped a patio table and chairs from Uptown Modern in Austin in the middle of the lawn; it’s a great place to sit while the kids play.

gallery wall

The Merrilee way to design a gallery wall: Use a mix of frames, and cover every inch of wall space. The runner? She found it on the street! “We live in a college town,” she says. “Kids are always moving and throwing things away. I found this rug and had it cleaned. Now it’s in my hallway.”

HGTV Magazine 137

clementine’s room

138 HGTV Magazine

“Clementine is a fun little lady,” says Merrilee, so grownup accents like ’70s floral paintings, a brass chandelier from Again & Again in Dallas, and an overdyed rug from Rugs USA coexist with a Hello Kitty pillow, a toy microphone stand, and a berry red Jenny Lind bed from The Land of Nod. This past Christmas, Clementine wanted a desk, so Merrilee bought a bamboo-and-brass one from a vintage shop called The Brass Peacock on chairish.com and painted it pink (Paris Romance by Benjamin Moore). The three-elephant lamp is from a Shirley Fintz collaboration with West Elm.

house tours

finnegan’s room

Merrilee repeated her not-tookid-like kid room decorating style in 10-year-old Finnegan’s bedroom with a red-and-graystripe rug from Wisteria, a dark brown bobbin bed from Restoration Hardware, and vintage bamboo card tables that serve as nightstands. The Belle & Sebastian concert poster was a gift to Merrilee from a friend.

house tours

bathroom

This gilded mirror from Gypsies Antiques in Austin probably wasn’t intended for a bathroom, but flanked by brass sconces from Circa Lighting, it looks made for the space. The McGehees replaced the bulky vanity with a pedestal sink and added a slim cabinet, which they topped with Carrara marble left over from the kitchen. The old linoleum floor was ripped out in favor of hexagonal Carrara marble tiles, and the rug is from an antiques shop in Northport, MI.

FOR SHOPPING SOURCES, SEE PAGE 168.

master bedroom

Some people subscribe to the “less is more” theory when decorating a bedroom. Not Merrilee. A vintage Italian candelabra from Again & Again fills the wall above the bed, and Pine Cone Hill euro shams pick up the coral in the Kantha blanket from Spruce Home. The nightstands are IKEA finds that she personalized with white paint and brass pulls from House of Antique Hardware. The vintage caned bench is topped with spotted fabric from Kravet.

marble

One of the biggest expenses was the 2-inch-thick Calacatta marble with dark gray veining. To keep the space from feeling chilly (and to stay within her budget), Ainsley used it only on the counters, behind the range, and for 4 inches of the backsplash.

w

hen Ainsley Grigsby and her husband, Todd, moved their family from Dallas, TX, to a spacious ranch house in Baton Rouge, LA, she immediately felt right at home in their new tree-filled, kid-friendly neighborhood. The one space that wasn’t so welcoming: her kitchen, with its faux-terra-cotta vinyl-tile floors, pea green wallpaper, and Cold War–era appliances. For this mom of three sons, ages 9 to 15, who also proudly holds the title of family chef, that was not going to fly. “I’m always cooking,” Ainsley says. “And they’re always eating.” Although she wanted a white, light-filled room, she didn’t want it to be a carbon copy of what was trending on Pinterest, so she enlisted architect William Sonner and designer Patrick Tandy to help create a functional space with a personal kick. The result is a bright room with plenty of unique touches, including a custom island, thick marble counters, and zingy citrus-hued accents. “I love the orange because it’s vibrant, adventurous, and fun,” Ainsley says. “I like to think I’m all those things, too!”

chandelier

This Visual Comfort chandelier is 43 inches in diameter, but because of its wire-frame construction, it doesn’t seem overwhelming. It was originally black, but designer Patrick had it painted a poppy shade of orange (Tangerine Melt by Benjamin Moore).

island

One design mandate Ainsley had for the island: She wanted it to include substantial X-shape supports inspired by the work of Suzanne Kasler, one of her favorite designers. Tall cabinets on one side hold small appliances; the other side houses a wine fridge and an ice maker.

barstools

Patrick and Ainsley snuck in more of Ainsley’s favorite color with these orange barstools from CB2. The bentwood seats are easy to clean, and their sloped backs make them comfier.

HGTV Magazine 149

in the kitchen cabinets

Ainsley used just one paint color (Gentle Cream by Benjamin Moore) for the Shakerstyle cabinets, walls, trim, and ceiling; the adjoining family room is the same warm white, so it all feels like one big space. Rather than add a row of small upper cabinets, she chose open cubbies, which display her collection of white servingware. The satin nickel bar pulls are by Emtek.

floor and rug

150 HGTV Magazine

After vinyl tiles were removed, Ainsley had oak floors installed and stained antique brown to match the ones throughout the rest of the house. The hand-knotted wool rug is from Rugs USA.

This recipe has evolved over the years, from lemon-flavored to pumpkin-flavored. Then when the kids came along, chocolate chips became part of the mix.

Savor the simplicity of The Tuscan Way.

− A few key ingredients −

− Cooked lightly in olive oil −

− To lock in layers of flavor −

© 2016 Mizkan America, Inc.

One hundred and fifty years ago, Francesco Bertolli embraced The Tuscan Way using simple ingredients and elevating the flavors of each one. This inspired us today to create a bright and fresh-tasting sauce. Bring Bertolli home tonight and try dinner The Tuscan Way.

ON MAY 7, 2016, COLOR ENTHUSIASTS participated in The Color Run™ in Austin, TX, and HGTV Magazine helped bring this colorful event to life through multifaceted custom-branded activations. Runners of all ages were delighted to pose on the colorful step-and-repeat with HGTV star David Bromstad. Sponsors were incorporated through various elements of the event space. From the co-branded “Candy Drop” Pink Zone to a DIY Spin Art station, BEHR encouraged guests to explore their colors and create their own art to take home. The Colorful Colorado Lounge, sponsored by Colorado Tourism, provided a relaxing respite for runners post-race, where they could sit back and flip through branded literature and copies of HGTV Magazine. With our sponsors, HGTV Magazine left a colorful mark on the event!
