Whenever I fall in love with a new lamp (this happens often), I always want to take home two so I’ll have a matching set. It’s probably because in our living room growing up, my mom always had matching lamps on the matching end tables on either side of the sofa. Come to think of it, my grandma Ann also had a stylish pair of matching living room lamps flanking her sofa, and so did my grandma Helen—though she called her sofa a davenport, which my sisters and I thought was the funniest thing ever. For me—and apparently for my mom and grandmas too—a striking pair of lamps in the living room is the ultimate finishing touch. Little things like lamps are what give a home spark and personality. That’s why we created a special section in this issue that puts a spotlight on the real heroes in a room: the accessories. Whether you want to layer new pillows on your bed, arrange cute coasters on your coffee table, or add just the right decorative box to your bookshelf, we’ve found the best buys. And if you’ve been on the lookout for a new lamp, I suggest you double up and buy two. Sure, one standout accessory could do the trick, but a matching set would double the fun.

Decorating my front door and steps for fall was on my to-do list, but I didn’t know where to start until I saw “It’s Fall! Welcome Home” in your October issue. Instant inspiration! I created my display using elements from all three porches, including the DIY idea of putting house numbers on a pumpkin. It was the first thing people commented on. —Kristy Purcell, Listowel, Ontario

The set of dinette chairs you made over in your October issue [“Would You Let These Chairs in Your House?”] really spoke to me. Last year I found similar ones, covered in plasticky 1970s-era material, and revived them with white paint and funky retro fabric. I was thrilled to see you did something similar to the set you found. Love the magazine!

My 11-year-old borrowed my copy of HGTV Magazine and bookmarked the pages she liked, which included “The High/Low List,” and things she wants to buy for our future home. The products she picked work within a color scheme, too. She just might be an interior designer in the making!

Thank you for the October story “The Actually Useful Junk Drawer.” My boyfriend loves gadgets and helpers like the items you featured. Your story was a one-stop shopping guide for his stocking stuffers. —Amanda Finin, Lexington, KY

I can hardly wait for your magazine to arrive in the mail each month. It’s my favorite because the stories are colorful and down-to-earth, and they offer stylish decorating suggestions that don’t empty my bank account. —Shirley Brown, Colborne, Ontario

After years of searching for a front door color, I knew my hunt was over when I spotted the paint shade Chili Pepper by Olympic in July/August’s “Wow! What Color Is That?” I went for it and love the look. —Jennifer Wilcox, Georgetown, OH

I was mesmerized by the blackand-white geometric wallpaper in September’s “Entries Love Wallpaper.” Inspired by that pattern, I freehanded geometric shapes in mint, aqua, and pink onto a wall in my home. Thank you for motivating me to keep experimenting. —Carla Charity Yount, Knoxville, TN

help wanted Two gallons for three giant rooms? Is she joking?

what painters are saying behind your back Painting pros reveal what drives them bonkers—and what you can do to ensure the job goes smoothly.

ILLUSTRATIONS BY CHRIS LONG REPORTED BY COLLEEN SULLIVAN

HGTV Magazine 17

help wanted It would have been nice to know the room was dark green before I got here.

I’m a painter, not a mover.

“Anything extreme will need one or two coats of primer so the old color doesn’t bleed through,” says Jeff Hester. If your painter doesn’t know the room to be painted is dark or superbright, he not only has to waste time buying primer, “but you’re also adding hours to the job since I have to wait for the primer to dry before I can paint,” Hester says. “That extra time adds to the price we agreed on.” Solution: Always tell the painter the room’s current color and finish when you hire him. And discuss whether you’ll need to order primer ahead of time (hint: Have it tinted to match the new color) or which is the best paint-plus-primer for the job.

“There’s nothing painters hate more than walking into a room full of stuff,” says Jeff Hester of Hester Painting and Decorating in Chicago, IL. “It means valuable painting time gets wasted while I clear out the space.” Before your painter arrives, empty bookshelves, and take mirrors and art off the walls. You’ll also be doing him a solid by rolling up area rugs that aren’t pinned under heavy furniture. The good news: Your painter is on the hook for moving large pieces into the center of the room and covering them with protective drop cloths.

Keep your dog out of my hair. It doesn’t matter how well-behaved your Jinxsy is. When the painter comes, dogs—and cats—need to be contained in another room or kept out of the house. At minimum, letting pets wander around means their loose fur can settle on wet walls, or they can track paint splatters from drop cloths through clean rooms, says Robert Hubley, president of Hubley’s Paint & Stain in Long Beach, NJ. Even worse: an accidental spill that puts paint on the floor, not on the walls. So do everyone a favor and keep painters and pets apart.

18 HGTV Magazine

The windows were painted shut! That was fun. Painting a room includes doing the window trim, and windows need to be open so the trim can be painted in its entirety. If yours are stuck, try prying them open before the painter arrives. Slide a putty knife into the cracks, and gently tap it with a rubber mallet or hammer, working your way around the window sash. If that doesn’t work, tell your painter about the problem before he’s scheduled to start so he can account for the necessary time—including scraping, sanding, and priming—and costs that need to be added to the job. “Unsticking windows can be tricky,” says Jeff Amsberry, owner of Amsberry’s Painting in Monroe, WA. “I’d rather know what I’m dealing with before I walk in.”

Um, that water stain needs special treatment.

I told her not to do high gloss on old walls. A lot of homeowners ask for high-gloss paint, thinking it’s the most washable finish, but it’s far from forgiving. “A higher sheen shows off a wall’s imperfections, especially when you factor in natural light,” says Ben Golde, founder and CEO of Classic Quality Painting in Charleston, SC. So while it might look great on wood cabinetry, furniture, and trim, high-gloss paint will bring out all the bumps, nicks, and uneven plaster on walls that you might not otherwise see. The good news: There are plenty of washable-finish options between flat and gloss, including eggshell and semigloss.

Even after you’ve fixed the source of the leak and the water stains have dried, the stains need to be treated with care. That means using the right primer to seal them so they won’t show through the new paint. “It’s always good for me to know about water damage ahead of time so I can bring the kind of primer I need,” says Robert Hubley. If the damage was extensive and your contractor had to replace drywall, tell your painter that, too. New drywall requires a coat of special primer to give your paint cling power.

She can’t possibly think that’s enough paint.

It’s not my fault she doesn’t like the color!

Coming up short doesn’t just slow down the job—it also means the color in a new can might not match what you’ve already bought. “Most companies have good quality control, but there’s always a human element [the guy mixing the paint] and a robotic element [the paint-mixing machine],” says Jeff Hester. Buying paint all at once helps cut down on color variance. With so many reliable paint calculators around, you don’t need to guess how much to buy. Most major paint brands have their own calculator, as do stores like Lowe’s and The Home Depot. The one from the Paint Quality Institute (paintquality.com) even accounts for the type of paint and the surface you’re covering.

Tiny chips from the paint aisle can help a little, but if your color research stops there, you’ll likely be disappointed. “Paper paint chips are usually too small to get a good sense of the final color,” says Kevin Nolan, president of Nolan Painting in Philadelphia, PA. “Plus, the colors are printed on paper, which looks a little different from how actual paint looks on a wall.” Best bet: Make your own big chips by coating pieces of large white cardstock with sample paints. Tape them to the wall, and compare them throughout the day as the light changes.

…to throw away junk mail without shredding it?

DOG: GETTY IMAGES; PILL CASE: BEN GOLDSTEIN/STUDIO D; RECYCLING BIN: GETTY IMAGES; JUNK MAIL: ALAMY

Snow, shmow.

…to take your dog out in winter without a coat? As long as your dog isn’t a hairless breed, like a Chinese crested, it’s usually fine for him to go au naturel in the cold, says Ann Hohenhaus, D.V.M., staff doctor at New York City’s Animal Medical Center. Because many canines have a built-in coat, they don’t normally need another one, nor will they get sick going out without a jacket. But that’s not to say your pup won’t be uncomfortable, especially if it’s below freezing. If you notice him shivering or pulling to go inside, you may want to bundle him up. Same goes for a dog who’s used to warm weather if he takes a trip up north: He may need an extra layer until he acclimates to the chilly climate. More important is to protect your pup’s feet from ice melters, which can irritate a dog’s paws and give him an upset stomach if he licks them off, says Dr. Hohenhaus. Invest in booties or immediately wipe the salt off when he comes inside using a clean, wet cloth.

not so bad!

WRITTEN BY MEGHAN OVERDEEP

If it has your name and address on it, you should shred it, advises Paul Stephens, director of policy and advocacy for Privacy Rights Clearinghouse. Although criminals aren’t likely to cause trouble by finding your name and address on a catalog or charity solicitation, the real risk is in someone getting ahold of a preapproved credit card offer. It usually includes a code to apply for the card. In the wrong hands, it could hurt your credit and send you on a chase to close a fraudulent account. Ripping it up isn’t enough. “We’ve heard of people dumpster diving and taping the torn pieces back together,” Stephens says. Run these offers— and other junk mail, to be safe—through a confetti-cut shredder. An even better way to manage unwanted mail? Stop receiving it! Visit optoutprescreen.com to reduce credit card offers and dmachoice.org to get less junk mail.

super bad!

…to not take a multivitamin every day? If you’re a healthy person who eats a balanced diet, there’s no reason to take a supplement, says Marion Nestle, Ph.D., a nutrition and food studies professor at New York University. That’s because the majority of people, even those who don’t eat a tip-top diet, already consume the recommended amount of vitamins. “Most foods today—junk foods included, save for soda—are fortified with vitamins,” says Nestle. Plus, there’s little research that proves vitamin supplements make healthy people healthier. However, if you regularly skip certain food groups, such as meats and beans or vegetables, or if you’re on a diet that restricts certain groups, then a multivitamin might be useful. Just check with your doctor first.

help wanted how bad is it…

…to hang sweaters instead of folding them? Hanging a sweater is one of the worst things you can do to it, says Ingrid Johnson, a professor of textiles at the Fashion Institute of Technology. Hangers stretch out the knit and create bumps at the shoulders, which bear most of the garment’s weight as it hangs in the closet. While thin wire hangers, like the kind you get at the dry cleaner, do the most damage, wood and padded ones aren’t much better. The best way to store sweaters is folded on a shelf or rolled in a drawer. If yours are bumpy from hanging, you can bring them to the dry cleaner to be reshaped (point out the trouble spots, like you would with a stain). Or you can try gently steaming the sweater yourself to smooth it out. Lay it flat to dry before you put it away.

DECLINE

…to keep an open …to decline bottle of travel champagne? insurance You can save leftover when you bubbly, but you’ll only get about a day out of it book a flight? before it goes flat, says Scott Carney, Master Sommelier and director of wine at the International Culinary Center. The most important thing to do is to keep it cold, because carbon dioxide (which gives champagne its tasty bubbles) diffuses more slowly in lower temps. So shove the bottle to the back of the fridge on the lower shelf, where it’s coolest. As for recorking, while there are a number of gadgets designed to extend the life of champagne after it’s been opened by maintaining pressure inside the bottle, Carney doesn’t recommend them. His advice for enjoying day-old bubbly? Put it in a mimosa.

sorta bad!

If you want to insure a flight or an entire trip, don’t check the box at the end of your airline booking. “That’s often what I call travel insurance ‘lite’—not what most people would consider full coverage,” says Christopher Elliott, author of How to Be the World’s Smartest Traveler. For example, you may be able to cancel your flight only for “covered reasons,” which can exclude preexisting medical conditions, natural disasters, and missed connections, and the policy might not reimburse you for lost luggage or a trip cut short due to injury. You have up to 14 days from the time you book your flight to buy insurance elsewhere, Elliott says, so shop around on third-party sites such as travelinsurance.com and insuremytrip.com. There you can compare more comprehensive policies from well-known providers like Allianz and CSA Travel Protection. It’s also wise to look into what your existing policies—like health, auto, and homeowner’s—cover.

not bad at all!

…to wear your glasses on top of your head? Glasses belong in one of two places, says optician Johnna Dukes, owner of Optique, an eyewear boutique in Spirit Lake, IA: “On your face or in their case.” Regularly sliding a pair of glasses on top of your head increases the chance of the frame stretching out, meaning they won’t fit your face the way they should. “Glasses that aren’t snug on your face are more likely to fall and break or get scratched,” says Dukes. And hair products and the natural oils on your head can gunk up the lenses. More no-nos: hanging them on the collar of your shirt or on a chain around your neck, since they could get crushed if you hug someone or bump into something.

if your hair dryer could talk It would blow you away with these hot tips.

I’m small but mighty.

Dryers with at least 1,800 watts of power are ideal for a quick blowout. For extra-thick hair, look for one with 2,000 watts. If those numbers seem high, well, they are: By comparison, many upright vacs use less than 1,500 watts. Hair dryers need the boost to produce a strong airflow and high heat.

I work on more than hair.

Careful with my cord.

Always unplug a dryer when you’re not using it, and never plug it into an extension cord, which could overheat and catch fire. For storage, opt for a loose loop. Wrapping the cord too tightly can cause the wires to twist and fray.

There’s a reason for my funny plug.

Those test and reset buttons are part of the legally required ground fault circuit interrupter, or GFCI, which cuts power in case of contact with water to reduce the risk of electrical shock. Be sure the GFCI is working by turning your dryer on and pressing test. If the dryer doesn’t turn off, toss it. All good? Hit reset to start it back up.

24 HGTV Magazine

Don’t forget to degunk me.

At least once a month, clean the filter on the back of the dryer so lint and dust don’t clog the motor and cause it to overheat. The protective grill should twist off. Clear lint with a cotton swab or an old toothbrush.

I don’t just blow hot air.

Buzzwords like ionic, tourmaline, and ceramic actually mean something. Ionic dryers are often lined with tourmaline, a semiprecious gemstone, which produces negatively charged ions that promote shinier, smoother hair. A ceramic-coated interior offers more even heat to speed up drying time. Many dryers now have both ionic and ceramic features.

Use the cool-air feature to dry your toothbrush before packing it for a trip, helping to prevent bacteria growth. The warm setting can stretch too-tight leather shoes. Put on thick socks, slip on the shoes, and heat them up for a couple minutes. To easily remove price tags from new dishware, blast them with hot air to soften the adhesive.

fun decorating

elcome to the HGTV Dream Home 2017! Hard to believe, but for 21 years, HGTV has been designing (and giving away) Dream Homes all around the country. This year designer Brian Patrick Flynn took on one of the biggest challenges yet: renovating a shabby house a few miles from the Atlantic Ocean on St. Simons Island, GA. It might look dreamy now, but when Brian laid eyes on it, he knew the project would be a doozy. “It was 1980s all the way,” he says. “The exterior was ugly stucco, and the rooms were small, closed off, and decorated in yellow and brown.” After knocking down a wall to make the living room, kitchen, and breakfast area one large, open space, Brian created a warm, welcoming home with lots of natural wood and easy-on-the-eyes colors. “This property has a spectacular yard—there’s even a lake on it,” he says. “I wanted the interior to feel like it’s just an extension of all the beauty around it.”

sofas

“This room looks out onto the pool and the expanse of greenery behind it,” says Brian. “It’s really stunning.” To not block the view—and to provide plenty of seating for guests—he arranged the two 90-inch-wide slipcovered Birch Lane sofas from wayfair.com away from the window but facing each other.

70 HGTV Magazine

chandelier

“I love adding a little glamour to a room that’s otherwise laidback,” says Brian. So he hung this House of Hampton bronze and crystal-teardrop fixture from wayfair.com from the wood-clad ceiling.

ceiling

Before the reno, the 15-foot-tall vaulted ceiling had absolutely no character. So Brian covered it with local pecky cypress boards to highlight its peaked shape. The planks were finished with a clear sealant.

barn door

The plain Jane interior door that led from the living room to a small den (now a home gym) was replaced with a barn door made from salvaged longleaf pine that was treated to give it a weathered look.

coffee table and rug A hefty farmhouse-style coffee table—it’s roughly 3 feet by 6 feet—is a perfect fit between the two long sofas. Brian describes the gray-and-brown woven wool rug as “cozy as a sweater.”

fun decorating

cabinets

The cabinets from Cabinets to Go were chosen for their platinum gray color. “They’re almost an identical match to the bark on the trees right outside,” says Brian. For a luxe touch, he picked pulls and handles wrapped in green leather.

tile and countertops

The countertops—a durable surface made of cement, soil, and crushed oyster shells and clamshells that’s popular in the low country—were tinted green before being poured. Brian picked matching cracklefinish clay tiles for the backsplash.

island and stools tune in!

Watch the HGTV Dream Home 2017 special with host Josh Temple (left) and designer Brian Patrick Flynn (right). It airs on HGTV on January 1 at 8 p.m. ET.

72 HGTV Magazine

To make the kitchen flow better, Brian swapped out the old peninsula for an island and added birch-andsteel stools with upholstered seats. “I normally love a white kitchen, but it wouldn’t have gone with the warm colors throughout the rest of the house,” he says.

house tours Teresa was so inspired by the colorful makeover inside that she painted her front door turquoise (San Jose Blue by Benjamin Moore).

ou could say I had fallen out of love with my house,” says Teresa Kelleher of the 3,600-squarefoot Palo Alto, CA, home that she and her husband, Brian, bought back in 2002. It wasn’t the structure itself Teresa was weary of—it was the way she had decorated it 15 years ago. “My style back then was heavy, bulky furniture and lots of deep reds, greens, and golds,” she recalls. After living with that look for more than a decade, Teresa decided she had gotten tired of the dark, dramatic decor. “The house doesn’t get a lot of natural light, and the color scheme was just depressing,” she says. Moving was out of the question, so in 2012, she gave the home an energy boost with help from designers Tiffany Mansfield and Lisa O’Neil. While the kitchen and her daughters’ bathroom got top-to-bottom renos, most of the house was transformed with just paint and bright fabrics. “I’m absolutely back in love,” Teresa says. “It’s light and cheery, and it really reflects who we are as a family.”

dining room

Pre-makeover, the dining room had olive-hued walls, a clunky dark-wood table, and high-back velvet chairs with brass upholstery nails. Teresa gave everything the boot and restyled with her favorite colors. The Loewenstein chairs are covered in lemony vinyl, the turquoise silk Cowtan & Tout curtains feature multicolor tassel trim, and a Cisco Brothers bench is covered in burnt orange Designtex fabric. The pendant is from Arteriors, and the walls are painted Jute by Benjamin Moore.

kitchen

While on vacation in Spain, Teresa picked up a home magazine that featured pretty, tiny, iridescent pink tiles. She was thrilled when designers Tiffany and Lisa found a close match at the Country Floors showroom in San Francisco. But on the day of installation, Teresa freaked out. “It was so pink, I panicked—I hadn’t shown it to Brian!” Luckily he was on board with the color, since it’s toned down by the white oak cabinets and the creamy white quartz counters. The nickel dome pendants are from Tech Lighting, and the lightweight aluminum stools are from Advanced Interior Designs.

There’s always a pack of children in my kitchen. I wanted the room to feel neat and be easy to clean. —Teresa

living room

Before the makeover, the living room had red walls, and olive and brown sofas. But after seeing the kitchen energized with its new color scheme, Teresa and her designers went fullsteam ahead with a bright, uplifting palette. Soft beige walls (Jute by Benjamin Moore) are the base for a seafoam Dellarobbia sofa and DwellStudio chairs covered in lime green velvet with chartreuse velvet cushions. A leopard-print ottoman that once served as a coffee table was replaced with a 42-inch-diameter custom mustard yellow leather piece that’s soft for sitting and feet propping but taut enough to hold a tray. To finish the look, Tiffany and Lisa layered a geometric turquoise-and-cream Jaipur Living rug over a jute one from West Elm.

girls’ bathroom

The Kellehers gave Sofia and Ana Isabel’s shared bathroom a full reno, which included ripping out the single sink in favor of a custom oak double vanity. The spa-like wall color (Warm Springs by Benjamin Moore) complements the shades-ofblue penny tiles from Walker Zanger that extend to the ceiling in the shower and 6 inches up the vanity’s backsplash.

master bedroom

Teresa and Brian didn’t want to spend a lot redoing their bedroom, so for a quick fix they painted the walls breezy blue gray (Quiet Moments by Benjamin Moore) and had a custom keystone headboard made with off-white linen. But the biggest change was upgrading from honeycomb shades to Roman shades and plush curtains, both made from Raoul Textiles linen with a celery green medallion print. The blue quilt and shams are from West Elm, and the blanket is from Tuvalu Home.

ana isabel’s bedroom

“The ceilings on the second floor of our house are pretty wild,” says Teresa. “Instead of trying to play down the angles, I thought it’d be fun to highlight them with paint.” Ana Isabel chose her favorite color, bubble gum pink, which Teresa then repeated in the Osborne & Little window shade fabric, trimmed in robin’s egg blue. Ana Isabel’s white Jenny Lind bed from The Land of Nod has a turquoise-and-lime quilt from Garnet Hill, and the glass and papier-mâché bird lamp is from Serena & Lily.

Of all the steals homeowner Amy Lind has nabbed, her favorites are three rugs she found (on different outings, no less!) and laid in a row to get the look of one. She scored two for $5 each at yard sales, and the third was free. It had been draped over a railing outside a house nearby, and when Amy asked about it, the owners gave it to her. “My friend tells me the rug gods are with me,” Amy says. She teamed the rugs with newer pieces, like a gray IKEA sofa and a molded plastic rocker by LexMod. The leather Eames reproduction chair was a Craigslist score.

ome people know just what to do with junk— and Amy Lind is one of them. She makes a habit of bringing home finds from yard sales, flea markets, her local Goodwill, even the trash. But nothing looks like junk after Amy has styled it in the adorable 1930s brick bungalow she shares with her husband, Josh, and their 22-month-old son, Forrest, in Savannah, GA. Three years after moving in, the couple embarked on a reno that expanded the attic to create a bathroom and a studio space for Amy, a painter, bumping up the home’s square footage to 2,213. When it came time to decorate, Amy didn’t budge from her budget-minded philosophy, scouring town and the internet for deals, and supplementing them with pieces handed down from family and the occasional new purchase. “Amy will come home beaming after a morning of ‘junkin’ ’ and ask me to guess how much she spent on a lamp, a trunk, whatever—and the answer is always $5,” says Josh. “I’m not quick to furnish a room, because I love the hunt,” Amy says. “I don’t mind if it takes months, even years, to find the right thing, especially if I can get the right thing for crazy cheap!”

dining room

To save the not-so-cute chandelier that came with the house, Amy gold leafed it, removed the shades, and replaced the bulbs with big bubble-shaped ones. She found the pine table and bench on Craigslist and paired them with vintage office chairs she bought years ago at an estate sale. (“That minty green is my favorite color,” she says.) The portrait above the cabinet is one of Amy’s own paintings, and the orange-and-white flat-weave rug is from Chandra.

To brighten the blah kitchen, the Linds put in white subway tile and painted the walls pale green and the cabinets white (Whitened Sage and Ultra Pure White, both by Behr). They made the shelves out of stair treads from The Home Depot, and put two mats from HomeGoods together to make a runner. A friend spotted the pendants at an antiques store an hour away. “She called, and I got in the car,” Amy says. “They weren’t $5—but cheap enough!”

Amy purchased this old workbench from a collector moving out of his antiques store. “The top has all these nicks and paint drips, which I love,” she says. “But because of that, I don’t prep food on it.” Instead the Linds store silverware from Josh’s grandmother in the drawers. The phrenology art is actually wrapping paper Amy squirreled away until she found the perfect frame for it—in the trash. “We live in a college town, and all kinds of goodies hit the curb when students move out.” HGTV Magazine 95

“This room reminds me of my style before I moved in with Josh,” says Amy. “It’s more feminine than the rest of our house.” She filled the walls with mirrors and empty frames—  instant art! A sheet of wrapping paper with illustrations of mushrooms, a geometric pillow from Target, and an orange vinyl desk chair found at a garage sale tie the warm colors together. “I used to live in L.A. and still feel weird hanging art above a bed. What if it falls in an earthquake?” says Amy. For the newly built bathroom, Amy chose white hexagonal tiles for the floor and subway tile with dark gray grout for the shower to keep with the style and age of the home. Pre-reno, Amy rented studio space a five-minute bike ride away. She misses the exercise but loves the convenience of her home studio, furnished entirely with collected items. “It’s all secondhand except for my easel,” she says. in the kitchen The most basic of basic cabinets—no knobs even. The pantry had only one wall of storage!

HAIR AND MAKEUP: ZEE CLEMENTE FOR ZENOBIA AGENCY

Speckled brown counters didn’t exactly help the dreary room.

a kitchen ripe for a redo This Nevada kitchen could best be described as... forgettable. That is, until a young family—with a passion for patterns—made it uniquely their own. PHOTOGRAPHS BY DAVID TSAY STYLED BY HEATHER BULLARD

in the kitchen

tile

Since cabinets line most of the walls, Linley wanted to have fun with the remaining space. Her designer suggested these 8-inch-square cement tiles from Granada Tile, but rather than arranging them in the intended quatrefoil, she randomly broke up the pattern with solid white tiles to keep the bold repeat from dominating the limited wall space. A coat of concrete sealer helps protect them from splatters.

Linley and Streeter with Lila, now 2

hen Linley and Streeter Hull found out they were expecting their first child three years ago, they knew it was time to ditch their tiny Las Vegas, NV, condo and head to bigger digs. But while their new house in nearby Summerlin gave them a lot more space, the kitchen was sorely lacking style. “The cabinets were orange brown; the speckled granite counters were just plain ugly; and the pantry was giant, but it was so poorly planned that it hardly had any storage,” Linley says. Armed with a Pinterest board of kitchen inspiration photos and a single request from Streeter  ––  “No white cabinets!”  ––  Linley asked designer Rebecca Zajac to help her create a room that felt young and energetic. Barely two months after baby Lila was born, the family of three temporarily moved back into their still unsold condo while their kitchen was overhauled. To keep costs down, the Hulls didn’t change the original layout or rip out the cabinets. Instead they added new cabinet doors to the old boxes and painted them a steely gray that looks downright handsome against the tiled walls. “At the time, it felt crazy to start a reno with a 2-month-old,” Linley says. “But now there’s not a second when I don’t think, Worth it! ” 112 HGTV Magazine

floor

“The old flooring had absolutely no character,” says Linley. So she replaced the porcelain tiles with hard-wearing 8-inch-wide laminate planks from Armstrong that look like reclaimed barnwood.

island and stools

The new 6-foot-by-8-foot island sits on the footprint of the old island, but with cabinets on three sides of the base, the storage in the room nearly doubled. Four slim wood-and-iron stools from Crate & Barrel tuck neatly into the recesses. For the island top and perimeter counters, Linley picked a durable gray-veined white quartz from Caesarstone. “Now I can actually see when there are crumbs to wipe up!” she says.

pendants

after

“Every kitchen on my Pinterest board had globe pendants, so I knew they had to be a part of the design,” Linley says. These brass pendants with bronze accents from Circa Lighting mimic the cabinet color and hardware.

cabinets

The Hulls kept the old cabinet boxes, outfitted them with new Shaker-style doors, and gave everything a coat of dark gray paint (Peppercorn by Sherwin-Williams). To keep the upper cabinets from feeling heavy, they added glass fronts to the pair flanking the range hood and painted the interiors bright white (Super White by Benjamin Moore). The brass knobs are from Rejuvenation.

baked potatoes Take this favorite side dish up a notch—yum!

twice-baked potatoes with bacon and eggs TIME: 1 hour 40 minutes

SERVES: 4

4 large russet potatoes 6 slices bacon ¼ cup milk, warmed 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (about 4 ounces) 2 scallions, thinly sliced, plus more for topping 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper 4 large eggs

1. Preheat the oven to 375°F, and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Pierce the potatoes in a few places with a fork; place on a microwave-safe plate and microwave, turning halfway through, until tender, about 16 minutes. Set aside until cool enough to handle.

3. Slice off the top ¼ inch of the potatoes lengthwise. Scoop the flesh from 3 potatoes into a medium bowl, leaving a ¼-inch-thick shell. Repeat with the remaining potato, but discard the flesh. Add 2 tablespoons of the reserved bacon drippings and the warmed milk to the bowl, and mash with a potato masher or a fork until smooth. Stir in the cheese, scallions, parsley, chopped bacon, ½ teaspoon salt, and ¼ teaspoon pepper. 4. Season the inside of the potato skins with salt and pepper. Divide the filling among the skins, then press the back of a spoon down the center of the filling to create a long, deep well. Brush the outside of the skins with the remaining bacon drippings, and transfer to the baking sheet. 5. One at a time, crack an egg into a small bowl, then carefully pour it into a potato (it’s OK if some of the egg white overflows). Transfer to the oven and bake until the whites are set, 20 to 25 minutes. Season with salt and pepper, and top with more scallions and the halved bacon strips.

116 HGTV Magazine

LEVI BROWN, FOOD STYLING: CHRIS LANIER

Great for breakfast or dinner!

2. Meanwhile cook the bacon in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat, turning occasionally, until crisp, 9 to 11 minutes. Drain on paper towels, reserving the drippings. Roughly chop 4 slices and break the other 2 slices in half; set aside.
