ccording to the AARP, 26.1 million women across America are caregivers, and for eight weeks this past summer, my husband’s mother and sister became two of them. After my father-in-law suffered two strokes, they visited him in a care facility for hours, wheeling him outdoors, feeding him homemade smoothies and reading the newspaper aloud. He passed away peacefully in September, and it truly drove home for me the sheer burden that so many women carry—often for years, not just weeks. WD has long covered caregiving, but this coming year we will look at the topic in a new light. In October we cohosted a panel of top experts that examined the intersection of heart disease and Alzheimer’s, and the deep toll these two diseases take on American women both as patients and caregivers. As we (and our parents) age, the issues will only multiply, with implications that range from mental health to family finances. In our pages, we plan to showcase stories of caregiving, starting with yours. On page 127 we’re launching an essay contest for caregivers, and offering a one-year subscription to Wellthy, a company that coordinates caregiving services for families, as a prize. Please share your stories—sometimes it’s the best medicine.

To make shorter trees, stop wrapping before you get to the bottom of the cone.
STUDIO D. PROP STYLIST: LIZ ENGELHARDT. CRAFT STYLIST: AMANDA KINGLOFF.
Create these tall, delicate trees by wrapping the top of a foam cone with cardstock to create a true point (the tops are flat), then cover the cone in clear plastic wrap. Knot a piece of green embroidery floss around the top, then wrap it around the cone in a crisscross pattern. Apply 2 coats of Mod Podge Stiffy (available at craft stores) to the floss; once dry and hardened, remove the plastic wrap and cone. Glue on gems to add sparkle.

HAN D MAD E for the Holidays
It’s a fairy door!
ENCHANTED WREATH Greet guests with magical decor! Nest a 14" embroidery hoop inside an 18" one and attach with strong tape at the clasps. Cover the tape with a loop of wide ribbon (you’ll use it for hanging later). Secure faux greenery, white berries and glittery ornaments along the bottom of the hoops with thin green floral wire. Create the fairy door from an 8" x 4" piece of balsa wood: First, trace an upside-down cereal bowl to make a rounded top, cut out with scissors, and use a brown pen and a ruler to draw vertical lines for wood slats. Punch a metal paper fastener through the wood for a doorknob and hot-glue miniature hinges ($3.15 each; dollhouseheaven.com) on the opposite side. Attach twine or thin rope around the outside of the door, then use hot glue to secure it to the inner hoop.

COUN TDOW N TO CHRISTMA S Decorate your tree one day at a time with this charming Advent calendar . Cover a 21" x 24" foam board in fabric and secure at the back with hot glue. Hang store-bought manila tags in rows from straight pins and add your own ornaments. To mark each date, punch holes in wood craft circles ($3.99 for 130; michaels.com), stamp on numbers and hang above the ornaments so little fingers know what’s ready for the tree.

EXTRA-SPECIAL ORNAMENTS Oh, what fun it is to make these adorable tree trimmings! Use them to decorate a branch—or a shelf or window. 1 KNIT BAUBLE Remove the metal top from a plain ball ornament. Hold 2 colors of yarn together and hot-glue inside the opening of the ornament. Once dry, wrap both strands around the ornament to cover completely; use hot glue to secure as you go. Apply red acrylic paint to the balls of 2 rock candy sticks ($3.99; at Michaels), then trim the ends into points using scissors. Once dry, thread these knitting needles through the yarn on the ornament and replace the metal top. 2 SWEET-SCENTED TREE Bend a 3½" piece of naturally coiled wrapped wire ($4.99; michaels.com) in half to form a loop, then gently push each end into the hollow part of a cinnamon stick. Use hot glue to attach cut sprigs of fresh rosemary for branches and small gems for ornaments. 3 COZY CAP Cut 50 14" lengths of yarn, plus a 1" ring from a paper towel tube. Fold a piece of yarn in half and pull the doubled end around the ring and back through the yarn loop; pull to tighten in place around the ring. Repeat until the ring is completely covered. Gather the loose ends of yarn and feed them through the center of the ring. Knot a length of yarn about 1½" above the ring; use the remaining yarn to hang. Use scissors to trim the top into a pompom shape, and stuff a cotton ball inside the hat so it keeps its shape. 4 SPARKLING STARBURST Carefully push whole and halved toothpicks into a 1½" foam ball, then apply 1 or 2 coats of silver spray paint. While still wet, dust fine silver glitter over the ornament. Use a dab of hot glue to attach a string for hanging.

Save (only) what’s special Corral any miscellaneous ornaments and accents that you don’t end up using in one box. Before you pack everything away at the end of the season, reconsider whether you should keep or donate these extras so they don’t build up over time.
MANAGE GREETING CARDS Spread smiles around the house without adding to paper pileups.
Create a catalog You don’t have to hang every card you receive! Drop them in an open container, like the Medium Lacquered Box ($14.99; containerstore.com), and place it on the coffee table to flip through. There’s a BLUE Naturally Fresh®® litter that’s right for your house: • Alpine Meadow
®
• Herbal Attraction
®
• Kitten Natural Training • Multi-Cat
Sort by room Simplify next year’s decorating by storing the stuff for each space together. But first, take a picture of the decorated room, then tape it to the outside of the box as a reference. Avoid a meltdown Remove candles from lanterns and holders, cover them in newspaper and keep in a cool, dark place so the wax doesn’t soften into a mess in storage.
• Non-Clumping Pellet
KEEP TRACK Santa has a list, and so should you! Start one in the Notes tab on your phone (then it’s always with you). Use it to record gift ideas, party RSVPs, holiday menus and other reminders.
3 WORTH-IT ORGANIZERS
• Quick-Clumping
Thanks to built-in dividers, the Two-Tray Christmas Ornament Storage Bag ($19.99; bedbathand beyond.com) safely holds your most precious pieces.
• Ultra Odor Control
The handy Heavy Duty Wreath and Garland Storage Bag with Handles ($19.99; homedepot .com) keeps your front-door decor from getting smooshed in the basement.
Prevent light strands (up to 100 feet) from tangling and bulbs from breaking by winding them around the Bayco Cord Storage Reel ($8.50; amazon.com).

Think double duty Instead of using space-sucking packing peanuts and bubble wrap to protect holiday items, try padding them with seasonal table linens and dishtowels that also need to be stowed in the new year.

CLEVER USES FOR
Pine Needles
Create fire starters
Bundle a handful of dry needles with thread to use along with kindling wood and newspaper. (They burn quickly, so they work better when paired with other flammable items.)
Let the remnants of Christmas live on all year.
2
Use as mulch Because the needles interlock, they stay in place and are less likely than other ground covers to blow away.
3
Make a disinfectant
If you like the scent of Pine-Sol, you’ll love this cleaning mixture. Combine ½ cup needles with white vinegar in a jar and let sit for a few weeks. Remove needles and use the solution on countertops and other surfaces.
4
Flavor vinegar Fill a mason jar with ½ cup needles and apple cider vinegar. Let the jar sit for a month, then strain. The infusion works as an herbal base for salad dressings, marinades or sauces.

DID YOU KNOW?
The scent of pine has been shown to reduce anxiety and depression.

SO SOOTHING Massage on body cream when your skin is slightly damp to help trap moisture along your skin’s surface.
Use hydrating cleansers CLEAN WITH OIL If your skin flakes even after you’ve applied lotion, it’s time to take a closer look at the products you’re using. “Avoid cleansers that contain harsh detergents like ammonium lauryl sulfate, which can make your skin dry out faster,” says Marina I. Peredo, MD, a dermatologist in Smithtown, NY. A better option? Use washes enriched with oils like argan, jojoba or sunflower seed. They’ll cleanse and moisturize at the same time.

LOTION UP AFTER SHOWERING “To fight dryness, look for a body cream that’s formulated with ceramides or fatty acids to bind skin cells and prevent scaly skin,” says Ted Lain, MD, a dermatologist in Austin, TX. But that’s not all. “Also look for humectants like hyaluronic acid and glycerin, since they bring in moisture.”
SOFTEN SKIN OVERNIGHT “Constant exposure to cold, dry air and moisture-zapping indoor heat will leave your body parched by day’s end,” says Dr. Peredo. To the rescue: a dose of body oil. It will quickly sink in to calm tight, itchy skin before bedtime.

Hydrate Skin
Hide Darkness
If you have dark circles, blame genetics—chances are if your parents had them, you will too. But that’s not the only reason. Aging causes collagen production to slow, which thins out this area even further, putting capillaries and veins on display. But there is help. “With improved hydration, light will be better reflected, which decreases shadows,” says Suneel Chilukuri, MD, a Houston dermatologist. Apply a pea-size amount of eye cream to the area twice a day, before your lotion.
“To take the emphasis off your dark circles, you need to lighten up your entire face,” says celebrity makeup artist Mally Roncal. After you apply your foundation, top off your look with concealer placed strategically in the following areas: directly under the center of each eye, at the corner of each nostril, below the center of your bottom lip and vertically between your eyes. Then, blend with your ring finger—which provides light pressure— to soften shadows and brighten skin.

some of them traveling many hours. My job was to carry each child from the waiting area to the operating room. I don’t speak Vietnamese and the mothers, for the most part, didn’t speak much English, but each of them handed over her child with such trust. In just 45 minutes, doctors stitched and reshaped these little faces, and as the gaps and holes were repaired, a child’s life was brought back together too.
As each mother came into the room, a look of awe crossed her face when she took in the appearance of a baby who just an hour before had no future or potential for happiness. She looked down and saw a beautiful, restored face. A butterfly. It was a rebirth, a miracle. ROMA DOWNEY ’s forthcoming book

or me, butterflies represent a life full of miracles. These beautiful and delicate creatures have appeared to me at the most unexpected times, often when I need a sign of joy. I don’t mean the butterflies that flock to the flowers in my garden on a warm, sunny day. I’m talking about a butterfly that flutters by in the dead of winter. Or one that appears on the wrist of a waitress as a tattoo. Or as a piece of jewelry in someone’s hair. A butterfly’s life and beauty are born out of struggle. Simply emerging from the cocoon can take a butterfly up to 15 days, and during that time, it writhes and wriggles, desperate to break out of its shell. From the outside, the process looks like a real fight—but this movement pushes fluid through the wings so that when the butterfly hatches, it has the strength to fly. I think about this struggle— and the beauty that emerges—when I volunteer with Operation Smile, a nonprofit organization whose doctors and nurses travel all over the world to operate on children who have cleft lips, cleft palates or other facial deformities. On one trip to Vietnam, we set up shop in a small town to do corrective surgery on 100 children. They had arrived with their mothers by bus and on foot,

STRANGERS MADE HER BIRTHDAY SPECIAL
Last summer, Hallee Sorenson was excited to celebrate her 18th birthday with friends at a local Bangor, ME, bowling alley. But when the big day rolled around, none of her guests showed up. Her mother, Allyson Sorenson, snapped a photo of Hallee sitting alone eating cake and ice cream. “It broke my heart,” says Allyson. This year, Hallee’s cousin Rebecca Guildford posted the photo on Facebook and asked that everyone who saw it send Hallee a card to celebrate her 19th birthday.
Hallee has received gifts and cards from nearly every country in the world.
Hallee Sorenson
“Hallee is funny, sweet, caring, smart and a jigsaw puzzle champion,” Rebecca wrote. “And she happens to have autism.” The post was widely shared, and within a week the mail began rolling in. By July, Hallee was receiving more than 10,000 cards a day from people all over the world. “All of these strangers wanted to do this to make my kid smile,” says Allyson. “It was fabulous.”

HE RETURNED A PRECIOUS KEEPSAKE
In May, Justin Lee was snorkeling in the Guadalupe River in New Braunfels, TX, when a glint of gold caught his eye. He swam toward it and uncovered a 1952 class ring from Redwood Falls, MN, bearing the initials MJK. After a few hours of research online, Justin determined that the ring belonged to Mary Jane Karis. The next morning, he posted the information and a photo of the ring on Facebook. Mary Jane’s daughter Corlie Weed saw the post and contacted Justin. She told him that her mother had likely lost the ring on vacation in the early 1970s. A few days later, Justin met Mary Jane, now 84, and Corlie at a local restaurant. “It was so nice to return the ring after all these years,” Justin told a local reporter.

THEY’RE PUTTING KIDS THROUGH COLLEGE
Until recently, college may have been out of reach for many of the low-income students Marty Burbank and Seon Chunin Tessa Ashton’s kindergarten class at Rio Burbank with the lucky class. Vista Elementary school in Anaheim, CA. But in February, Mwarty Burbank and his wife, Seon Chun-Burbank, who volunteer at the school, pledged to put all 26 students through college after they heard a sermon at their church about generosity. “I don’t want money to be a barrier for them,” says Marty. The donation, worth about $1 million, will cover two years at a community college and two years at a California state school (or the equivalent amount, if they prefer to attend college elsewhere). Like Marty, an attorney, and Seon, a college professor, most of these students will be the first in their families to attend college. “We got a lot of help to get where we are,” says Seon. “Now we’re helping others. I hope the kids will pay it forward, too.”
As night fell on July 30, an afternoon rainstorm in Ellicott City, MD, turned into a torrential downpour. When Jason Barnes, 36, the owner of All Time Toys on Main Street, looked out the front door of his store, he saw a small car float into view. “The headlights

were on,” he says. “I could tell someone was inside.” He trudged out into the deluge, determined to help the stranded driver. Two fellow shop owners joined him, and the three men grasped forearms to form a human chain from the sidewalk to the car. Jason convinced the driver to climb out of the car window. “I told her she was about 50 feet from being washed down the river,” says Jason. He lifted the woman over the worst of the raging water until she was able to grab the hand of one of the men. Jason insists he helped the way anyone would. “I was just the first link in a very strong chain,” he says.

8 Amazing Acts of K I N D N E S S
After Heather Clark’s 7-month-old son, Lukas, died of brain damage in 2013, she donated his organs. Two days later, Lukas’s heart saved the life of Jordan Drake, an 18-month-old girl in Chandler, AZ, who was born with a heart defect. Heather reached out to Jordan’s mother, Esther Gonzalez, and in January, the families met at Phoenix Children’s Hospital. As Heather pressed the end of a stethoscope against Jordan’s chest and heard the rhythmic thump of Lukas’s heart, Esther whispered, “That’s your baby.” After the emotional meeting, the women have stayed in touch. “Jordan now can do all of the things I would have wanted for Lukas—high school graduation, her first best friend,” Heather says. “And I’ll be there for all of it.”

SHE RESCUED A TEEN FROM DROWNING
In March, college student Emma Campbell glanced out the window of her apartment in Gainesville, FL, and noticed some teenagers splashing in the building’s swimming pool. Suddenly, she saw one of the boys sink beneath the surface of the 8-foot-deep pool. “The others were standing there, stunned,” says Emma. She ran to the pool and dove to the bottom, pulling the unconscious teen, Zyvione Speed-Mitchell, to the surface. His friends dragged him onto the pool deck, then Emma performed CPR until the paramedics arrived a few minutes later. Zyvione fully recovered, but he doesn’t remember much of the incident. His mother, Carmelia Speed, does. “She’s part of our family now,” Carmelia said of Emma. “She saved my son.”

My husband and I came up with an answer when our kids asked, “What do you want for Christmas?” after we saw a statistic that close to 40,000 veterans are homeless. Since my husband and son are both Marines, donating to a homeless shelter seemed a perfect fit. Now each family member, including the grandkids, gathers items like clothes and toiletries, which we deliver to the shelter together.

Mix in the sour cream until just combined (the batter should be very thick). 4 Scoop half the batter into the prepared pan, spreading to evenly distribute it, and sprinkle with the walnut mixture. Top with the remaining batter and sprinkle with the remaining topping. Bake for 30 minutes. 5 Reduce oven temperature to 300°F and bake until a skewer inserted into the cake comes out clean, 20 to 25 minutes more. Let the cake cool completely in the pan. 6 Unmold the cake and wrap in plastic. Freeze for up to 3 days. An hour and 15 minutes before serving, let thaw to room temperature. Roasted Shrimp & White Beans ROASTED SHRIMP & WHITE BEANS WITH BROCCOLINI
SIMPLE SWAP
With small florets and tender stalks, easy-to-find broccolini looks like baby broccoli, but has a slightly bitter taste. You can sub in broccoli—just up the roasting time to 8 minutes before adding the shrimp.
Heat oven to 425°F. On a large rimmed baking sheet, toss 1 lb broccolini (thick stems discarded) with 1 Tbsp olive oil and ¼ tsp each salt and pepper. Roast for 5 minutes. In a bowl, toss 1 lb large peeled and deveined shrimp with 1 Tbsp olive oil, 1 tsp finely grated lemon zest, ½ red chili (thinly sliced), and ¼ tsp each salt and pepper. Scatter over the partially cooked broccolini and roast until the shrimp are opaque throughout and the broccolini begins to crisp, 9 to 11 minutes. Heat 1 Tbsp oil and 2 cloves finely chopped garlic over medium-low heat until beginning to toast. Add two 15-oz cans low-sodium white beans (rinsed), 1 tsp fresh thyme leaves and ½ cup low-sodium chicken broth and bring to a simmer. Roughly mash ⅓ of the beans to thicken slightly. Serve with the shrimp, broccolini and lemon wedges, if desired. PER SERVING 386 CAL, 11.5 G FAT (2 G SAT FAT), 143 MG CHOL, 1,148 MG SOD, 31 G PRO, 42 G CAR, 13 G FIBER

1 In a large bowl, whisk together 2 Tbsp oil, the lemon juice, mustard and ¼ tsp each salt and pepper; stir in the parsley and thyme. Add the chicken and garlic (in their skins) and toss to coat; let sit for 10 minutes. 2 Place the potatoes and smashed garlic in a large pot. Add enough cold water to cover and bring to a boil. Add 1 tsp salt, reduce heat and simmer until just tender, 15 to 18 minutes. Reserve ½ cup of the cooking liquid, drain the potatoes and garlic, and return them to the pot. Mash with the remaining 2 Tbsp oil, ¼ tsp each salt and pepper, and 2 Tbsp of the reserved cooking liquid (adding more liquid as necessary). 3 While the potatoes are cooking, heat a 12-in. cast-iron skillet over medium heat until hot, about 2 minutes. Place the chicken, skin side down, in the skillet and spoon the garlic cloves around it. Place a medium skillet on top of the chicken and put heavy cans in the skillet to weigh it down (this will flatten the chicken so it cooks up evenly and extra-crisp). caregivers NEED CARE, TOO
I
f you’re in the thick of helping someone else, it can be easy to let your own health slide. But keep this in mind: A University of Wisconsin, Madison, study found that a patient is more likely to receive better medical care if his or her caregiver is in good mental and physical shape. Why? A healthy caregiver may have the energy to put in more face time with doctors and effectively address specific issues. To ease some of the burden of caring for a loved one, look into Wellthy (wellthy.com), a service that assists with logistics, deals with insurance providers, and more.

BLOCK THE BLUE
Finding it hard to conk out after using your smartphone? You’re not imagining things. Screens emit blue light, which suppresses the production of melatonin, a hormone that helps control your sleep cycle. One solution: Put on blue light–blocking glasses like Spektrum (from $39.95; spektrumglasses .com) at night. They filter out 50% to 99% of the rays, depending on the style. If you wear prescription glasses, consider switching your nightstand bulbs to those with low levels of blue light (look for “PM” or “Good Night”) on the package.

EXERCISE
If you’re feeling joyful this holiday season, use it to your advantage: Heading into your workout with a positive outlook gives you big benefits, according to a recent German study. Researchers discovered that people who believe that exercise is good for them experienced a greater uptick in mood (and a decrease in anxiety) after sweating than those who didn’t think they’d get much out of it. So before you get started, remind yourself of all the perks a workout will bring (jot them down if you need to), then reap the rewards.

KEEP YOUR BRAIN IN GREAT SHAPE
These factors raise or lower your dementia risk—and here’s what you can do about it. PHYSICAL ACTIVITY The connection: Exercise is associated with more effective blood flow to the brain and better oxygen supply for brain tissues. Do this: Shopping for holiday gifts? Take a few laps at the mall before you start checking items off your list.
OBESITY The connection: There’s a link between obesity and an increased risk of brain shrinkage, which may lead to dementia. Do this: Get techy. Research shows that people who use wellness apps are more likely to engage in healthy activities.
REGULAR COFFEE OR TEA The connection: Caffeine may lessen the production of a brain protein linked to dementia. Do this: Enjoy your drink—but don’t load the cup with sugar. (High blood sugar may increase your dementia risk even if you don’t have diabetes.)
TYPE 2 DIABETES The connection: The disease may increase inflammation, which can impair signals between nerve cells. Do this: Speak to your doctor about diabetes medications—they might also alleviate the symptoms of Alzheimer’s.

AN ERRATIC SCHEDULE
Inconsistent wakeups (5:30 a.m. on weekdays, 8 a.m. on weekends) and hectic days can skew your body clock, which cuts into your ability to snag quality sleep later, says Shanon Makekau, MD, medical director, Kaiser Permanente sleep lab in Hawaii. F I X YO U R Z Z Z ’ S
Sleep in—but still set your alarm You may have heard that you should wake up at the same time every day, but you actually have about 30 to 60 minutes of wiggle room that allows you to flex your schedule and still get the same sleep benefits, according to Dr. Makekau. So if you typically get up at 6 a.m. during the week, feel free to add an extra hour of snooze time on Saturday. Let the sun shine in Bundle up and take a brisk walk around the block soon after you wake up. Immediate exposure to morning light resets and finetunes your sleep-wake rhythm, says Namni Goel, PhD, associate professor in the division of sleep and chronobiology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.

Devise a backup plan “One of the most common mistakes women make is spending too much time in bed hoping to doze off, but this can actually perpetuate insomnia,” says Meena Khan, MD, assistant program director of the Sleep Medicine Fellowship Program at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. If you can’t fall asleep or you find yourself awake at 2 a.m., get out of bed. “Go relax in another room for 15 to 30 minutes until you feel drowsy,” she says. It’s a good idea to prep by having a book, knitting project or a few relaxing stretches at the ready. Consider a later bedtime Just because you crawl into bed at a decent hour doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll get more sleep. “Plan to be in bed only for the time you’re truly sleeping,” says Dr. Khan. First, figure out how many hours of sleep you want to get. Say that’s 7 hours. So if you have to be up at 6 a.m., go to bed at 11 p.m, not 9 p.m.
As tough as it may be, it’s important to encourage your dog to sleep elsewhere. It’s best if he snoozes in another room so you avoid any nighttime interruptions.
{Obstacle #3}
POOR BEFORE-BED HABITS
Speeding along at night trying to get every last thing checked off (laundry! dishes! bills!) keeps your brain and body in active mode. F I X YO U R Z Z Z ’ S
Stop and think At some point in the evening, take a few minutes to pause and notice smells, sights and sounds. Simply being mindful may improve sleep quality and daytime functioning better than a formal program that includes stress reduction tactics, suggests research published in JAMA Internal Medicine. “A minute or two can make a big difference in your stress levels,” says Shelby Harris, PsyD, director of behavioral sleep medicine at the Sleep-Wake Disorders Center at the Montefiore Health System. Build in buffer time Your body needs a minute—or 30— to wind down and do something relaxing, so stop reading email at this point. “This period is crucial in separating the chaos of the day from the quiet of bedtime,” says Dr. Makekau. Turn on a podcast or draw in an adult coloring book. (And finish your last glass of wine three to four hours before bed so it’s out of your system by the time you crawl in the sheets.)

Simple Ways to Ease Stress Make the holiday less hectic with these expert tips. B Y A LY S S A S H A F F E R
THE SPORT PSYCHOLOGIST SAYS…
Sneak in a (quick) sweat outside
It’s worth it to brave the cold— especially because you don’t have to stay out too long to reap the benefits. Studies have found that heading outdoors to exercise is more enjoyable than doing the same activity while cooped up inside, and you’ll feel a lift in your mood after just 5 minutes. Working out is also one of the best ways to bust anxiety: Research shows that it promotes the release of endorphins, which act like a tranquilizer on the brain. Plus, exercise blunts the effects of stress hormones like cortisol. Go for a family stroll before or after dinner, or set your morning alarm 20 minutes earlier to fit in a walk. GREGORY CHERTOK, sport and exercise psychology consultant

A GIVE-BACK BONUS
One study found that helping friends, peers and even strangers can significantly cut down on stressful feelings. A win-win!
THE NUTRITIONIST SAYS…
Enjoy treats the right way
Too much added sugar can cause blood sugar highs and lows, leaving you feeling more anxious and less able to handle stress. But that doesn’t mean seasonal sweets are completely off-limits. Small changes can significantly reduce your overall sugar intake. Try eating just one cookie or piece of candy instead of a handful so you can have a taste without overdoing it. (Place your treat on a plate, then walk away from the rest of the goodies so you aren’t in sight of more temptations.) Also, when cooking, make no-sugar-added choices like roasted sweet potatoes rather than candied yams (you’ll save 14 grams of sugar per serving). LAURI WRIGHT, PhD, RDN, assistant professor, department of nutrition and dietetics, University of North Florida, Tallahassee
THE DOCTOR SAYS…
Let it all out
Bottling up your stress for too long can lead to health issues such as back pain (from excessive muscle tension) and a weakened immune system. So it’s crucial to find a release that works for you. One suggestion: Go to a private spot, such as your car, and scream for about 5 seconds. Yes, seriously. It’s like letting out steam from a teakettle. If screaming isn’t for you, try a few minutes of dancing, singing (put on some holiday tunes!) or deep breathing. Sub in some key ingredients
Work them into other meals, too
Cornell researchers analyzed hundreds of menus along with diners’ orders and found that items highlighted with bold, colorful lettering or set apart in a box are selected more often, even if they’re the least healthy. In other words, enticing descriptions really do influence your decisions. So keep this in mind when you’re picking an entrée. Make it a point to look past all the fancy fonts and mouthwatering words and stick to grilled, broiled and steamed dishes. And when you’re with your family, try to go to restaurants that offer nutritious kid’s menu options. A study published in the journal Obesity found that when there are more healthy options on the 12-and-under menu—crowding out the fried foods and other unhealthy picks— children are more likely to order them.
These simple swaps will work with your prized recipe: Replace 1 cup sugar with ¾ cup raw or coconut palm sugar (they’re naturally sweeter so you can use less), plus a pinch of a sweet spice (like cinnamon) or ¼ tsp pure vanilla extract. This will save 130 calories and 22 g sugar per cup. Instead of ½ cup butter, use 3 Tbsp unsalted butter + ¼ cup avocado or grapeseed oil. The taste is just as rich and you gain heart-healthy fats. Replace white all-purpose flour with whole-wheat pastry flour for more fiber and a slightly nuttier flavor. Fold in bittersweet chocolate (at least 60% cacao) rather than the semisweet or milk varieties. The darker the chocolate, the more heart-protective cocoa compounds it potentially contains.
People who average eight or more servings of fruits and vegetables a day are 30% less likely to have a heart attack or stroke compared to those who eat fewer than 1½ servings, according to a longterm study of almost 110,000 men and women. Vegetables are low in calories, high in fiber and packed with nutrients that may help control blood pressure. So in the morning, add spinach to eggs or try something unexpected, like mixing mashed sweet potatoes into pancake batter. For lunch, pile sandwiches high with all the fixings (cucumbers, lettuce, avocado, tomato)—or, if you prefer, make a salad packed with vegetables and topped with sandwich meat. And sneak in some extra veggies at snack time: Blend greens into a fruit smoothie or munch on carrots dipped in hummus.

When you want to shed weight, you probably think about all the foods you shouldn’t enjoy: chocolate, chips, french fries…the list goes on. But actually, dropping pounds is easier when you focus on eating more of the right foods to enhance your meals. To slim down, stock up on these six picks.
BRUSSELS SPROUTS
POPCORN
WATER CHESTNUTS
This whole grain provides a lot of volume and a decent amount of fiber. One cup has just about 30 calories and delivers a little more than 1 g of fiber. So, that means you can eat three cups for less than 100 calories and you’ll score more than 3 g of filling fiber.
Make it: Add 4 Tbsp kernels to a brown paper lunchbag, fold the edge of the bag over twice, then microwave on high for 1½ to 2 minutes. Enjoy the popcorn plain, or spritz with an oil mister and add a sprinkle of Parmesan or spices like cinnamon, chili powder or cumin.
Prefer store-bought popcorn? Grab one of my favorite brands: New Pop, SkinnyPop or Popcorn, Indiana FIT.
It’s time to give this vegetable a second— or third—chance. One cup has just 38 calories and packs 3.8 g of fiber, and nonstarchy sprouts have the satisfying texture of a heartier starchy veggie. Plus, they deliver immuneboosting vitamin C, which makes them a smart pick for cold-and-flu season.
Let’s face it, a big ol’ bowl of greens can get a little boring after a while, but you can add some crunch to salads by tossing in water chestnuts. One study suggests that people associate the sound of crunchy foods with freshness; the louder the crunch, the better the product was perceived to be. So skip the croutons and perk up your greens with water chestnuts instead, for about 40 calories per ½ cup. You’ll find canned versions in the Asian-foods aisle at most grocery stores.
CHIA SEEDS
HOT SAUCE
Several studies found a connection between spicy foods and weight loss. (The heat may help to slightly rev metabolism and suppress appetite.) You can drizzle hot sauce on eggs, soups, stews, hummus, and more. Frank’s Red Hot Sauce, Cholula and Tabasco are great brand options because they have no added sugar.
APPLES
Loaded with a fiber called pectin that slows digestion, apples keep you fuller longer. In one study, women who ate three apples a day lost more weight than those who consumed the same number of calories in oatmeal cookies. The apple eaters’ blood sugar dropped, too!
These edible seeds contain satiating protein and fiber, plus they absorb liquid and expand to take up room in your stomach. Sprinkle them on oatmeal, cereal or yogurt, or mix into dips, salad dressings and smoothies. A time capsule is fun to create—and so important in the years to come.
1
Curate artifacts Find keepsakes from the year’s special events, like a postcard, trophy or wedding announcement, and write down your family members’ current playlists or favorite books to capture their present tastes. Store in a waterproof plastic or metal bin with a tight-fitting lid in a closet or under a bed.
2
Update annually Think of your capsule as an evolving time line and add an item, like a family photo taken in the same spot, every year. Store in a folder labeled with the date.
PETER ROSA/STUDIO D. ELF CRAFT STYLIST: BLAKE RAMSEY MURRAY.

Capture voices Record interviews with relatives each time your family gets together. Ask about their personal histories and your heritage. You can save the audio files to an external hard drive or on archival-quality CDs, then pack the recorder in the bin.

Is it OK to give my dog holiday table scraps?
A: It’s tempting to give your pup a taste of the casseroles, meats and desserts found on many tables this time of year. But because dogs don’t process foods high in calories and fat the way we do, those bites could wreak havoc on their digestive systems. Certain holiday treats like grapes, raisins and macadamia nuts could even be toxic. Instead, give your pet an equally delicious, nutrient-rich holiday meal like CESAR® recipes, made especially for dogs. SOURCE: Tiffany Bierer, PhD, pet nutritionist, Mars Petcare US

I
wanted an ugly dog. When I went to a Pet Rescue adoption event at Petco eight years ago, I thought I’d be the guy who took the ugly dog that no one else wanted. But the ugly dog was so shy that it wasn’t a good fit. Then I spotted Mary. She and my husband, Damon, connected instantly. “She’s a Jack Russell terrier,” I said. “They are crazy! My friend’s dog literally runs up the walls for fun.” Damon won out, and we brought Mary home. At first, Mary seemed sad and withdrawn. I thought I was doomed to live with this miserable dog for 15 years! But two weeks later, we’d all bonded. It was a good lesson that there’s often an adjustment period. Adopting Mary is one of the best things that has happened to me, and I wanted to help Pet Rescue. After the first donation drive I held, they were able to buy a van to help transport stray dogs. It’s so gratifying to know that over the years, our efforts have raised more than $200,000! C L I N T O N K E L LY

Adorably scruffy
Since many people don’t want the ugly dog, I took some time to get the pups on these pages in top form. Like many makeovers for people, it’s amazing what a bath, trim, blow-dry and a few cute accessories can do! (Below) Pet Rescue’s president, Paula Krenkel, and I put the final touches on Pascale, a wirehaired terrier.

FOR THE GOOD OF THE ANIMALS
Pet Rescue aims to help homeless, abandoned and neglected cats and dogs (and any other animals that need rescuing!). Its facility in Harrison, NY, houses up to 40 cats and 30 dogs, and vets spay, neuter and provide other emergency care for the shelter’s animals. A network of volunteers foster the animals until they find permanent homes. Pet Rescue operates without government funding, relying on the generosity of donations.

SLEDDING GNOME:* For the body, make a ball of red fondant (about 2½ oz), then elongate at one end. For the head, roll light pink fondant (about ½ oz) into a ball, then slightly flatten. Attach to the body using a toothpick (the toothpick should stick out of both sides of the head). For the ears, roll light pink fondant (⅛ oz) into a small log and cut in half; press lightly to flatten. Pinch each half at one side and adhere to the head using a little water. For the nose, roll light pink fondant into a round or oval and adhere to the face. For the hat, roll red fondant (about 1 oz) into a ball, then elongate at one end. Place hat on the sticking-out toothpick on head, using a little water to stick. For the scarf, roll green fondant (less than ⅛ oz) into a long log; flatten and cut out. Wrap around neck using water as glue. WINDOW GNOMES:* Make only the heads (above). For the beard, roll white fondant (about ⅛ oz) into a ball, then elongate at one end. Glue to the face using a little water. For the hands, roll light pink fondant (less than ⅛ oz) into 2 balls and flatten slightly. Cut 3 even slits to make 4 fingers and carefully shape into fingers. Carefully press gnomes into windows. PRESENTS:* Cut red fondant (about 1 oz)
into squares. To add shine, brush with a little luster dust mixed with a drop of clear liquor (we used vodka). Pipe on bows with royal icing.
SLEIGH: Use royal icing to attach 2 mini
candy canes to the side of a rectangular cookie and let dry. *NOTE: Fondant decorations can be made up to 2 months in advance.

Heat oven to 350°F. In a food processor, pulse the graham crackers and cocoa to form fine crumbs. Add the butter and pulse to combine. 2 Press the mixture into the bottom and up the sides of a 9-in. pie plate. Bake until lightly toasted, 10 to 14 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool. 3 Meanwhile, heat 1 cup milk and the rum in a heavy-bottomed saucepan until small bubbles appear around the edges. In a medium bowl, whisk together the egg yolks and brown sugar until thick and pale, about 2 minutes. 4 Whisking constantly, gradually pour the warm milk over the egg mixture. Return to the saucepan and cook, stirring constantly, over medium-low heat until thick enough to coat the back of a spoon, 12 to 17 minutes. Remove from heat and whisk in the chestnut purée until smooth (if you can’t whisk it smooth, transfer to a food processor and purée). 5 Place the remaining ¼ cup milk in a bowl, sprinkle the gelatin over the top and let sit for 5 minutes. Whisk into the warm chestnut mixture to combine, then pass through a strainer, return to the bowl, cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate until cool to the touch, 45 minutes to 1 hour (do not leave longer or the gelatin will set). 6 Using an electric mixer, beat the cream in a large bowl until medium-stiff peaks form. Stir a spoonful of heavy cream into the chestnut mixture to loosen, then fold in the remaining cream. Transfer to the prepared crust and refrigerate until set, at least 2 hours or up to 2 days. 7 If desired, top with chocolate curls or shavings before serving.

FUN FACT
This pie was first created for Count Nesselrode, a 19th-century Russian diplomat who loved chestnuts.

TODAY’S TWIST
We took the pie back to its roots with help from convenient canned chestnut purée (you can look for it in the baking or holiday aisle). We skipped the artificially flavored fruit and added just a hint of cocoa to the crust, then left out the egg whites, since our pie was already light and fluffy enough.

BACK THEN
Nesselrode pie—a custard cream popular in Europe during the 19th century— gained fame as a Christmas dessert in 1920s New York City. The original was made with homemade chestnut purée, yet most American recipes, including ours from 1979, omitted the expensive ingredient and subbed in jarred candied fruit.
