WHAT YOU’RE INNING

How To Talk To Anybody

Yara Shahidi, the 16-year-old star of ABC’s Black-ish, shares the struggles she faces as a mixed-race teen. AS TOLD TO MARTA TOPRAN

“Proving” Myself I’ve always felt like I belonged within my family, but there have been times when people would see us together and say, “That doesn’t make sense.” That’s because my mom is black (we have the same face), and my dad is Iranian—light skinned, hazel eyes. I may have an entirely Persian name, but when people identify me, they identify me as black. It’s stressful to feel like you have to prove just how much of one side of your background you are. I’m proud of both sides.

Finding Community At school, I joined the Black Student Council not only because it represents part of my identity, but also because it’s a cool group of people. They understand why, when we have seven weeks of swimming in PE, I have to wear braids every single day for my hair to be manageable. We can also talk about makeup with each other. A lot of lines don’t have darker shades, or they’ll have one dark color that’s supposed to

INSPIRING YOU TO NEVER GIVE UP

ife isn’t all that different from going on an audition. You meet people, do your best, then hope things work out. You win some and you lose some. Only a few years ago, I was auditioning for almost everything—

off-Broadway productions, TV shows, film projects. I opened myself up to a lot of rejection, so I came up with a helpful way to deal with the process. After every audition, I’d debrief with a close friend and then just let the experience go—like a balloon I was holding tightly and then finally releasing. I’d think, This situation will go where it needs to and come back to

me if it’s meant to be. There were times I thought I had a great audition, but I didn’t book the job. It was hard, but a lot of elements were outside of my control, like fitting in with a cast or a director’s vision. In other words, you might not land every opportunity, but that may not be a reflection on you. There’s always a bigger picture. The one thing you can control is what you bring into the room—or your college or the world. Prepare as much as you can, and have faith that your abilities will shine through. As long as you do that, you’ve done your job; everything else is out of your hands. If something is the right fit, it will work out.

What is so lovely about the show I’m on is that it gave me a word: I’m black-ish. To me, that represents a beautiful amalgamation of cultures, where I’m not simply one thing or the other. Even though I’m half in some respects, I’m full in heart.

Stereotypes Hurt I’m a total preppy and a proud nerd; I study hard and I get A’s. Because of that, some people outside of the black community—even one of my friends!—have said that I’m “whitewashed.” That implies I’ve given up a part of myself to try to fit into a majority culture. My friend said I didn’t “act black” because I didn’t use slang, I couldn’t rap, and I didn’t use the word fleek enough. What does that insinuate about black people? I think a lot of times people think it’s a joke to say I “act white,” but it’s hurtful. It’s more than just calling me a name; it’s detaching me from my entire heritage.

My Hair Dilemma If I post a picture with my hair straight, people assume I don’t like the natural texture or that I’m trying to fit in. I’ve always loved my curls—and always will—but there are times when I choose to wear it straight. Sometimes I feel pressure to explain why or to be like, “No, I promise you I love my curly hair.” One time I went to school with it straight, and someone told me, “Oh, I like that much better.” When it was curly again, people were like, “When is your hair going to be straight again?” It hurt—and it made me think. I would ask myself, Is straight hair prettier? To be honest, there were times I liked my hair straight just because of how other people perceived it. But how I do my hair doesn’t affect who I really am.

work for everyone. I’m butterscotch, so if a shade of makeup is too light, it makes me look gray. It’s a struggle.

I wouldn’t change a thing in my life because it all led me to where I am right now—making my Broadway debut as Eliza Hamilton in Hamilton. Sometimes I still can’t believe how big the musical has become. I’m so grateful. Life is full of major moments, whether it’s graduating from high school or landing a job, and the best thing you can do is stay confident and know that even if you’re scared, you have the ability to get through it and come out on top. So sit back, relax, and try to enjoy this time of uncertainty. And as Eliza would say, “Look around, look around at how lucky you are to be alive right now!”

“Yeah, I Fight Like a Girl”

“We all have the right to be safe and pursue our dreams without feeling insecure and threatened,” Pooja says.

And Pooja Nagpal, 18, wants to show girls in need how to do the same by teaching them confidence through self-defense. by ANDREA STANLEY

17: so how did you get into martial arts?

17: What’s one of your classes like?

I was taking ballet, but whenever I was in class, my teacher would say, “That looks like a martial arts kick, not a ballet kick.” So when I was 5, I started taking tae kwon do and loved it. Now I have a secondary black belt [the level above a black belt] in tae kwon do. Having that skill has always given me confidence.

My biggest thing is giving girls the strength to use their voices. When we’re punching and kicking, I tell them to make noises. It’s like, Yeah, I’m here and I’m strong. And then I teach hard-core techniques, like what to do if someone grabs you from behind.

In 2013, I started hearing about cases of violence against women. One attack in India really touched me, since my family is from there, and I had friends who experienced assault where I live in Los Angeles, too. Recently I heard from the police that although crime has gone down, assaults against women have gone up. It was like, Enough— it’s time to give girls their power back. I partnered with local domesticviolence shelters and began offering free self-defense classes. I also teach in India in the summers. So far, I’ve instructed about 1,000 girls. I wanted to teach girls my age because when you see someone like you doing something, you believe you can do it too.

With all of the talk about rape culture at colleges, I want to bring what I do to college campuses. I really think that’s where the next chapter of my life is taking me. Q

MY STYLE “Grandma chic—classic with a twist.”

MY STYLE “Versatile—sporty yet girly.”

MY DENIM SHOPPING STRUGGLE “I love skinny jeans, but it’s hard to find ones that are snug on my thighs and hips but not baggy at my waist.”

MY DENIM SHOPPING STRUGGLE “Finding jeans long enough for my legs! Even with cropped styles, it’s hard to get the perfect ankle-grazing pair. The ones in the photo were a vintage score.”

MY DENIM SHOPPING STRUGGLE “I’m just 5 '1", so it’s hard to find jeans that I don’t have to hem. It’s also tough to find ones with distressed details (like holes) that line up where they’re supposed to on my small frame.”

FIT TRICK “TBH, finding a pair that fits takes lots of try-ons. It can be an emotional roller coaster, so I bring my sister for a second opinion and to make it more fun.”

FIT TRICK “When I fall in love with a pair that aren’t long enough, I size up and get the waist tailored. It’s really easy to get done and so worth it.”

GO-TO BRANDS “For me, the best tight-all-over jeans are at Fashion2Figure [worn above]. I also love Melissa McCarthy Seven7, ASOS Curve, and Forever 21+.”

GO-TO BRANDS “American Eagle Outfitters has the best selection of affordable tall-girl jeans. I also like Topshop Tall for more of-the-moment vibes and Banana Republic’s tall fits for a polished look.”

WORDS TO DRESS BY “I never look for something to ‘flatter’ me. If I like something, I wear it. It’s that simple!”

WORDS TO DRESS BY “At 5  ' 11 ", I don’t pay attention to style advice about how I can appear shorter. I just own it!”

FIT TRICK “Cuffing my jeans and the sleeves of my denim jackets has actually become one of my style signatures! When you do it kind of messy, it adds a personal touch.” GO-TO BRANDS “Abercrombie & Fitch. Their Jean Leggings [worn above] come in all the washes and a ‘short’ length. I’ve also had luck at Zara.” WORDS TO DRESS BY “Being short isn’t a restriction—there’s always a way to make something work if you think it’s your style!”

You need only one piece of decorated denim to take an outfit from womp to wow!

FASHION DENIM BLOWOUT!

YOUR GUIDE TO TLC Live in your jeans? Make them last forever with this no-fail advice from expert Rain Delisle of Indigo Proof (indigoproof.com).

Know Your Fabric

When it comes to fit and care, there are differences between raw and treated denim. Here are the basics. Raw Denim

Treated Denim

You’ll usually see “raw” on the label, but if not, it’s really stiff, 100 percent cotton, and very dark. It’s not preshrunk (beware the high-heat dryer setting!), but buy it slightly snug to your body because it can stretch a bit from wear. This kind is preshrunk and often comes in a cotton blend with some give. Rule of thumb: The less spandex, the longer they’ll last; don’t buy anything with more than 2 percent.

HOW TO WASH ’EM

SLOW DOWN FADING Use cold water (it’s gentler than hot) and wash them inside out to prevent too much color from coming off. AVOID SHRINKAGE Hate squeezing into a just-washed pair? Air-drying yields the least amount of size change, so as long as you’re not in a rush, skip the dryer.

38

Shopping Tip: Never buy vintage jeans without trying them on. You can’t go by the size alone because they may have gotten bigger due to wear or smaller due to alterations.

Storing 101 Never hang your jeans by their belt loops—it can warp their shape over time. The best way to store them is folded in a closet or drawer and away from sunlight so they don’t fade.

Styling Tip: Cuffing your jeans looks cute, but it can break down the fibers along the folded edge (which also collects dirt) and leave a mark. So always unroll them when you take them off.

THE HOLE STORY

If you’re into distressed jeans, look for ones with rips that are not in high-wear areas, like the knees and hip crease. (You don’t want to widen the tears every time you sit or move!) Thighs and back pockets are best. Torn your fave pair? A patch will hide it, but getting them repaired by a pro is a more permanent fix. Small patches can disguise a tiny tear or stain!

SEVENTEEN.COM/DENIMHACK Genius denim hacks every girl needs.

ILLUSTRATIONS: BELINDA XIA.

DON’T OVERDO IT Forget the no-washing hype—when your clothes are dirty, you need to clean them. But that doesn’t mean you need to put them through a cycle after every wear. The more you wash jeans, the more you’ll break down their fibers and shorten their life. You can always spot-clean stains with a bit of detergent. Rub gently to avoid leaving a light patch.

Gold + Maroon

This high-glam duo is bomb for your next Sweet Sixteen or quinceañera. With your finger, tap a creamy gold shadow up to your brows (try one layer for a sheer wash; two to three for more intensity) and then paint on a deep pout, using a lip brush for precision. BEGINNER’S TIP Not ready for this dramatic lip look? Dab on color with your finger, which diffuses it.

Bold lips and rock star liner are a mega-fun pair for concerts. A liquid liner with a pivoting wand (like Lancôme’s) will help you draw a clean tail—go from your inner corners, along lashes, to slightly past the outer corners. Repeat on your lower lashline, creating two parallel lines. Then swipe a shocking reddish-pink shade on your lips. BEGINNER’S TIP Ditch the bottom liner and go with a cute mini cat-eye!

Grape + Bubblegum

A girly girl’s coolest look for an end-of-summer party: candycolored eyes and lips. With a shadow brush, apply a purple hue all over lids, then add lilac to your inner corners and under your eyes for a smoky effect. Finish by coating your mouth with a pop of pink. BEGINNER’S TIP Lighten up eyes or lips: Use just the lilac shadow, or pat your pout with a tissue to pull off some pink.

Take a cue from the fall runways and be a bonfire babe with eyes more lit than flames. (Don’t worry—nude lips keep this combo from looking cray.) Use a shadow brush to sweep a fiery pigment to just above your creases. Then layer on a nude lipstick and a matching nude gloss. (Tarte’s is double-ended.) BEGINNER’S TIP Wear red as liner rather than all over lids. Just dip a wet angled brush in the shadow, then swipe it on top lashlines.

STRUGGLES— SOLVED! For every summer sitch (frizz! oil!), Lisette, Seventeen’s Beauty Smartie, has got you. AS TOLD TO KELSEY CASTAÑON

Q

How do I keep my makeup from melting off? I hate that! – @BRI.GHT_

One word: primer. I always use one with oilabsorbing properties (like this Make Up For Ever Step 1 Skin Equalizer Mattifying Primer, $36, sephora.com) under my foundation. Not only will it prevent makeup from sliding off your face, but you’ll also stay shine-free all day.

How can I pull off a day-tonight look without lots of makeup? @JAAAYPEEZY

For daytime, I love a natural look, so skip eyeliner (it’s too intense) and keep things simple with neutral eyeshadows and waterproof mascara. Then, to get insta-glam for a GNO, do what I do: Swipe on a bright lipstick.

Q

My hair always gets so dry from all the sun and swimming. How do I keep it moisturized? – @AHNAEXO I do a weekly coconut hot oil treatment. Microwave the liquid for a few seconds (the warmth helps oil soak into hair), then apply it from roots to tips. Let it sit for 30 minutes (I leave it on for an hour if my hair is really fried), then shampoo it out. HASK Monoi Oil Nourishing Shine Hair Oil, $3, ulta.com

@BROOKESTER626

Braids are my go-to! I’m always experimenting with new versions (like the double French braid I’m wearing at right). They are the cutest way to get hair out of your face—and off your neck.

SUN-TERVENTIONS Love a “healthy” glow? So did these readers—until UV photos showed the not-so-pretty underlying damage. Find out what might be happening to your skin (and how to fix it)! BY KATE FOSTER

The Sometimes Sunbather Isabel, 20, Rochester, NY

HER M.O. “I love soaking in the sun, from camp to vacation. Day to day, I never wear sunscreen—I like seeing my freckles come out!” WHAT HER PHOTO SHOWS “The black dots are sun spots and freckles, which your skin creates to protect itself from the sun,” says dermatologist Anne Chapas, M.D., of Union Square Laser Dermatology in NYC. “If Isabel doesn’t start protecting her skin, they’ll get darker over time and will cause irreversible discoloration in her twenties.” ISABEL’S REACTION “I always liked my freckles; who knew they were damage? I don’t want it to get worse.” SKIN SAVERS “A vitamin C serum will help to lighten the spots; daily SPF will prevent future ones,” says Dr. Chapas. The Reformed Tanner Isabella, 21, Tampa, FL

HER M.O. “I’m from Florida, so I was always crazy about tanning and thought my Filipino skin was immune to the sun. I got into skin care about a year ago and started using SPF 30.” WHAT HER PHOTO SHOWS “Even though Isabella doesn’t display visible discoloration on the outside, her photo shows she has a lot of below-thesurface damage,” says Dr. Chapas. “The fact is, no one is immune to spots or skin cancer, even someone with a deeper skin tone.” ISABELLA’S REACTION “I’m so glad I started taking care of my skin, or my picture could’ve been way worse. I need to keep at it with products to prevent any more damage.” SKIN SAVER “Isabella should add antioxidants to her routine, which combat spots. Some sunscreens have them built-in already,” says Dr. Chapas. GARNIER SkinActive Clearly Brighter Anti-Sun Damage Daily Moisturizer SPF 30, $15, drugstores

The Beach Babe

Jessica, 21, Babylon, NY HER M.O. “As a surfer, I’m always in the sun—and I like to get as tan as possible. I put sunscreen on when I get to the beach, but I rarely reapply it.” WHAT HER PHOTO SHOWS “Jess has a lot of underlying spots. Since she’s in the sun so much, she’s more at risk for them becoming visible, even in the next few years,” says Dr. Chapas. “Eventually, excessive unprotected sun exposure can cause early wrinkles.” JESSICA’S REACTION “Wow. I didn’t expect it to be this bad! I don’t want to become one of those old leathery surfers. I’ll remember this shot whenever I don’t want to reapply SPF.” SKIN SAVER “Water washes off sunscreen fast. She should apply an SPF 50 at least every 80 minutes on surf days, and SPF 30 all the other days,” says Dr. Chapas. CLINIQUE SPF 50 Mineral Sunscreen Fluid for Face, $26, clinique.com

What’s the Deal With... Watermelon! Maple! Um, charcoal?!? Here’s a breakdown of what’s fine to suck down—and what just sucks. by ANDREA STANLEY MAPLE

No, this isn’t like sipping on syrup. A serving of maple water is full of manganese, a mineral that helps build strong bones (hello, dancerlike balance and posture!), and malic acid, which helps with muscle soreness and fatigue. “If you’re really active, this is perfect for refueling your energy,” says Laura Lefkowitz, M.D., a physician specializing in nutrition in Miami, Florida.

WATERMELON

This has amino acids to up your endurance game and antioxidants to protect you from sun damage. H2O-yeah! But oh no: There’s a lot of sugar in it, too, Dr. Lefkowitz warns. Even though it’s natural sugar, consuming too much of the sweet stuff is unhealthy and can lead to weight gain. Your best bet: If you’ll be outdoors, or sweating a lot, add a half cup to regular water to soak up some benefits. Any other time, pass.

Maddie says: “I was worried because I hate maple syrup, but this basically just tastes like water.”

Maddie says: “The flavor is exactly like a watermelon—super-fruity.”

ARTICHOKE

The whole vegetable may be funny looking, but it’s nutrient rich and can help with everything from digestion to clearing up your complexion. But when it comes to drinking it? Not so much, Dr. Lefkowitz says. All the good-for-you perks are diluted with processed ingredients to make it taste okay. Uh, no thanks.

How to drink more H2 O—even

Maddie says: “Gross! It’s like all of these crazy flavors put together and it ends up tasting like dirt.”

CACTUS

CHLOROPHYLL

Yep, we’re talking about the same stuff that gives plants their green pigment. Turns out, it’s insanely awesome for people, too. It acts like an internal deodorant that helps with bad breath and body odor. Plus, it’s packed with vitamins and minerals. Dr. Lefkowitz says: Drink up. Maddie says: “Really good—sort of like a watered-down slushie.”

66 SEVENTEEN.COM / AUGUST 2016

Here’s the thing: This isn’t the pure liquid that you’d find if you cut open one of these prickly plants in the desert. The bottled version is loaded with sugar and fruit concentrates, so even though it has some antioxidants, you should really think before you drink. Maddie says: “A little bit is okay, but the more you have, the more it starts tasting like a weird vegetable.”

CHARCOAL

The scary gray color isn’t the only shady thing about this flavor. The charcoal is meant to suck up toxins in your body, Dr. Lefkowitz says, but in the process, it also vacuums up essential vitamins and nutrients, like vitamins B and C. Since it’s not too sugary, having one occasionally is fine, like when you’re feeling bloated (period probs!), because it gets rid of gas. Otherwise, save your cash. Maddie says: “It smells like Silly Putty, but it doesn’t taste bad at all— sort of like a lemon.”

My Mom Made Me

GO TO FAT CAMP

Brooke, 17, couldn’t wait for a chill summer with her friends. But after she was diagnosed as obese, reality set in. AS TOLD TO ANDREA STANLEY

T

Three years ago, as my freshman year in high school was ending, all I could think about was my upcoming freedom. I had become friends with one of the “cool” upperclassman girls, and I couldn’t wait to hang out with her. We had all of these summer goals: relax at the beach, go to the movies, just have fun. But that never happened. One day after school, my mom sat me down, made me watch a video for a place called Camp Shane, and told me I was going there. Not only was it more than six hours away from my home in Savannah, Georgia, but it was also a weight-loss camp for kids. I was going to fat camp. It seemed like I was being sent away because I didn’t look good enough, and it was heartbreaking. I remember thinking, All of my friends are going to forget about me. I shut down and went into denial, thinking my mom wouldn’t really make me go.

The “F” Word

I started gaining weight around fifth grade. My parents were going through a divorce, and we began moving around. That was tough for me. It took a while to meet new friends, so I was bored a lot, but I did have food to keep me busy. I didn’t even care what it was—I ate everything. My mom noticed I was getting bigger and would take away my phone if she caught me sneaking food. She’d tell me to exercise and to take a walk, and I would—right to the store for chocolate and honey buns. “Once during camp, I never thought of myself as I had to run a mile. I “the fat girl.” But I didn’t think put my headphones on, got in the zone, enough of myself to believe I and realized I’d run past had the option to be anything the fastest counselor,” recalls Brooke, who has lost other than what I was. I’d 75 pounds. “I remember say, I’m just Brooke; there’s thinking, This is what being proud nothing special about me. of yourself I wasn’t being honest with feels like.” myself about how unhealthy and unhappy I was. At school, where 68 SEVENTEEN.COM / AUGUST 2016

but it felt as if my life were over. Little did I know, it was just beginning.

A Big Change 2013

Brooke, who is 5  '1  ", at her highest weight of 220 pounds.

BROOKE: (OPPOSITE PAGE) MADISON BUERSTER; (THIS PAGE) COURTESY OF CAMP SHANE. FAMILY PHOTO: COURTESY OF SUBJECT.

“I could never repay my mom for everything she did for me,” says Brooke, here at age 13 (with, from left, her stepdad, Charles; mom, Zennie; and brothers, Matthew and Joshua).

I was “the nice girl,” people rarely brought up my weight because they didn’t want to hurt my feelings. But one day during freshman year, after a pair of pants I’d squeezed into tore in the middle of math class, some kids pointed it out. They didn’t make it into a big thing, but I was mortified. A couple of months after that, I went for a checkup and found out I was 220 pounds. The doctor told me I was obese and at risk for diabetes. My self-worth was so low, I was like, Whatever. But my mom was worried and decided to send me away for help. For weeks, I pretended it wasn’t happening. When I told a couple of my friends, they were sad we wouldn’t be able to spend the summer together. As the first day of camp got closer, I tried everything to change my mom’s mind. I said I was sick; promised to go on a diet; complained I didn’t have anything to pack; gave her the silent treatment. Then I got angry and said hurtful things in hopes of making her feel so guilty she’d let me stay home. Nothing worked. It sounds dramatic,

Walking into camp was terrifying. I’d never been away from home before. I wanted to hate it, but right away, I thought, This isn’t that bad. The counselors were nice, and it felt comforting to see other people who looked like me. I spent most days playing various sports and working out. And the food was pretty good—there was even angel food cake! Still, the first few weeks were hard. We got on a scale every week, and sometimes I wouldn’t lose any weight, which was frustrating. But when I started to see muscles appear, it felt so good. I realized this wasn’t about what I was losing—it was about what I was gaining: strength. I also discovered I love to dance—and eat vegetables! I became a runner, made amazing friends, and even met a cute boy. My mom had planned for me to be at camp for only four weeks, but I liked it so much, she let me stay for six. When I got home, my family couldn’t believe how much I had changed. I’d lost 20 pounds, and not only were all of my old clothes super-baggy, but I also was happier and more confident. Back at school, people had questions: Was it like The Biggest Loser? Was I only allowed to eat vegetables? Meanwhile, guys started hitting on me. It kind of made me mad—I was invisible to you before, but now I’m worth looking at? Now it was my time to ignore them. That summer changed everything for me. I’ve gone back to Camp Shane every year since—that’s all I’d want for my birthday and Christmas gifts. Today I’m down to 145 pounds. I love being active, and I’ve learned to cook. I just graduated from high school and plan to major in exercise science at Columbus State University. I thought I was being sent away to change my appearance, but it wasn’t about that. It was about learning to value myself, take care of my body, and be comfortable in my own skin. And that’s beautiful. SEVENTEEN.COM/REALGIRL Read more real-girl stories.

How toWork the Friend Zone

1

Managing where someone stands in your life isn’t easy when you both want different things. These readers reveal how to DTR without making the situation super-awkward. by HEATHER VIGGIANI

KEEP SOMEONE IN IT “A guy I really like hanging out with—but I’m not attracted to—started hinting that he wanted us to take it to the next level. I worried it would ruin our friendship if I outright rejected him, so I tried a subtle approach first: I made a point of talking to him about a guy I did have a huge crush on. It worked out perfectly. He totally got the clue, and I got useful dating advice!” –April, 17

2

TAKE ’EM OUT OF IT “I started to crush hard on my closest guy friend, but I was too nervous to tell him to his face. So I asked to borrow his phone to call my mom and then I secretly changed my name in his contacts to ‘Bae?’ I figured being lighthearted yet direct was the best bet—and I was right! He texted me later with a screen grab showing he’d removed the question mark. Now we’re dating!” –Yvonne, 16

3

BRING ’EM BACK IN IT “My BFF and I started having feelings for each other so we decided to become girlfriends. After a month, I realized we weren’t compatible like that. I told her right away; I didn’t want things to get complicated. I made sure to focus on the fact that I didn’t want to lose her from my life. After we gave it a few weeks to cool down, we got back to being besties without benefits pretty easily.” –Erin, 15 AUGUST 2016 / SEVENTEEN.COM

QUIZ!

Do You Have a

TOXIC BESTIE? Your friends have one job: to help you feel good about yourself. With each member of your squad in mind, consider the scenarios at right—then find out if it might be time to reconsider some relationships. by HEATHER VIGGIANI

72

SEVENTEEN.COM/BFFBREAKUP Signs that it’s time for a squad overhaul.

Check off which (if any) of these things your friend has done to you: Flaked on you but then posted a bunch of pictures from a big party you weren’t invited to. Didn’t like your latest pic on Insta, or the one before that . . . or the one before that.

Forgot your birthday this year and wasn’t very apologetic about it. Didn’t answer your texts or calls when you knew they were posting to Snapchat at the same time.

Started a rumor about you and your bae breaking up when it wasn’t true.

Seemed to always invite you last.

Never seemed to have time to give you advice when you needed it.

Rarely complimented you on your outfits, your accomplishments—or anything!

Didn’t clear your name when you got into trouble for something they had done.

Talked about you behind your back.

Pressured you into letting them copy your homework. Made you feel like your things aren’t cool enough. Still hasn’t paid you back even though you spotted them cash a few weeks ago.

Made you feel insecure.

Spilled a secret of yours to the rest of your squad. Kept you on the outside of inside jokes with your other friends. Borrowed your top, got lots of compliments in front of you, and never told anyone it was yours.

Frenemy Scale

Tally your checks, then see where your friendship falls. 12–17

Totally hazardous

This person doesn’t sound like they have your back—and they could be making you feel less-than. “You should feel like your friends celebrate you for exactly who you are,” says Patricia Ottaviano, author of Girl World. It might seem “cool” to remain in this person’s circle, but don’t let that deter you from slowly and gently phasing them out if they aren’t making a positive impact on your life, she says. (See “Real BFF Breakups” at right to find out how other girls have handled it.)

6–11

Potential danger

There are some red flags in this squadship. With the right amount of communication, things can get back on track, but only if you’re sure the mistakes this person is making don’t come with bad intentions. “Have a convo right away when something is bothering you. If this is a worthwhile friendship, they’ll make the effort to correct slipups,” says Ottaviano.

No harm here

Even if this friend made a few missteps (no one is perfect!), there’s a lot of good blood here. Keep things in a great place, and consider making a friend pact around what qualities you value most in Your Person. “It sounds a little corny, but if you actually sit down and make commitments to one another—like, we will not gossip about each other—then you are letting your friends know how important that is to you,” says Ottaviano. Setting your expectations about how you’d like to treat each other will make them clear—and it’ll be easier to mend any wrongdoing, she says.

Real BFF Breakups

They can be stressful and scary. But these girls survived and they’re happier than ever.

EXITING A CREW

“I always thought my six girls and I were going to have everlasting friendships. But when I hit a rough patch—a BF breakup, failed college plans—they weren’t there. It raised doubts whether they were actually good for me. Then we had an argument where they ganged up on me. In the heat of it, I just felt ‘done,’ and I walked out of the room—and on our friendships. When they later confronted me, I told them I was cutting them out. There were subsnaps and dirty looks, but the liberated feeling of not having bad people around me outweighed it. Now I feel more confident in myself and my ability to spot a good friend.” –Dlylah, 18

WITHIN A TRIO

“I broke up with two people I used to consider my closest friends. They were never really that great—they’d make fun of my parents and always had a million excuses not to hang out, and when we did, I’d feel ignored. Realizing all of that, I decided to stop making an effort with them and let us drift apart. Until then, I hadn’t realized how many other people wanted to be friends with me. I just needed to put myself out there!” –Emma, 17

ONE SQUAD MEMBER

“Jen* was one of six girls in my new friend group freshman year of college. I loved my new pack but quickly realized Jen was a real-life Mean Girl. I asked a few of my friends if they felt the same way about her and they did! We came together and told Jen we were no longer going to stand for the way she treated us. She blocked us on social media and talked about us behind our backs, but the experience brought the remaining group closer and made us appreciate each other more.” –Molly, 20

and then go back to being a no one,” says Maddie Ziegler. Yeah . . . that didn’t happen. Thanks to five seasons on the reality show and her killer performances in four of Sia’s memorable music videos, Maddie is a total Someone. (She even has nearly 8 million followers—and counting—on social media.) “My friends and I get noticed when we are just going to Dairy Queen!” says the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania–area native. And she won’t

be able to hit up DQ on the DL anytime soon: She’s spending her summer as a judge on So You Think You Can Dance: The Next Generation, and she’ll star in her first movie, The Book of Henry, which hits theaters in September. “Acting has always been a dream,” says Maddie, who turns 14 this fall. Even though she’s aware she’s not “just a normal kid who goes to school,” she’s a lot like you in that she has set tons of big goals for herself. Here, Maddie shares her passions (and her secret hobby—hint: It’s inspired by Miranda Sings) with her close friend Sia. Get a peek into their special bond as you listen in on their honest and amusing girl talk.

Sia: I know why. It’s because you have very mature sensibilities. And you are very, very smart and very quickwitted. It’s probably natural that you are drawn to people who are more your psychological age because you seem like an older woman inside of a child’s body. [Laughs.] I think because you came in first so many times, it helped with your self-esteem. You know you are good. You understand if you don’t get a job, it’s just because they were looking for a blonde kid or someone who has a more introverted energy. You know not to take it personally. That’s so valuable. I really admire that about you—and also the fact that you are a workhorse. Maddie: I am doing lots of different things, and sometimes I just want a break. But when I have one, I’m very bored and want to do what I was doing. Sia: That’s so fascinating. When you aren’t working, what do you do? Maddie: Well, I’m usually making Miranda videos. I like watching Netflix—I’m into Grey’s Anatomy right now. I like hanging out with my neighbors—we just ride our bikes from house to house. It’s fun. Also, I like to play with my makeup and stuff. Sia: You’re so adaptable. You can do what kids do, but when it’s time to work, you are so professional. You and I have a lot of fun together, and we do silly videos and dances and joke around. But

when it’s time for work, you’re unlike anyone I’ve worked with. Maddie: People think that my everyday life is, like, doing cool jobs and taking a limo, but right now I’m at my house and I was just painting. Sia: It’s interesting, isn’t it? There’s this image of us on the red carpet, being really fancy, and then there’s the reality. I’m in bed doing this interview. I just played tennis, the three dogs are on the floor—and you know I’m picking up poop at some point today. Maddie: We are just people! Sia: Do you run your Twitter or Instagram? Maddie: I have people help me with Instagram, but I think it’s fun to post my own pictures. Sia: Totally. I asked because I don’t run mine anymore. People hurt my feelings so much. Have you ever read any mean stuff and, if so, how do you deal with it? Maddie: When I was younger, I used to read the comments and I’d get sad. Sia: That breaks my heart. Maddie: I would be like, Why are they mad at me? I’ve come to realize now people just do it because they want attention. One person would be hating on me, and then another girl would get into a fight with her on my page! I’m just like, What the heck? Why do people do this? Sia: I remember when we made “Chandelier” together, there was a lot of stuff online saying that Abby Lee Miller [the Dance Moms instructor] had chosen you to be in my video over Chloe [Lukasiak]. Maddie: It wasn’t like that! Sia: No, I had seen you on Dance Moms

ZIEGLER AND SIA: (INSET) GET T Y IMAGES.

Maddie: Hello, friend! I’m going to make you a video right after this call. Sia: I’m very, very excited. Do Seventeen readers know about the videos you make in your private time or is it just me and a few friends? Maddie: Just you guys. Sia: I think it’s time to tell them! In Maddie’s spare time, she likes to make fun videos for me and our makeup artist that are sometimes makeup tutorials and sometimes based on [YouTube star] Miranda Sings. What we are going to be receiving later today is a tutorial on how to French-braid hair in the character of Miranda, adapted slightly. I do believe that your versions are, well, funnier. Maybe one day, if your fans are lucky, you could put it on Instagram. You should share that hilariousness with the world. Maddie: Yeah, I probably would. Sia: Okay, so I have some questions for you. Let’s start with . . . friendships. Since you have gotten more successful, which friends have stuck with you? Maddie: My friends have always been from dance, so they’ve all pretty much stuck with me. It’s funny ’cause I like hanging out sometimes with older kids more than kids my age.

and one particular dance made me cry. And I thought to myself, Imagine what we could do together. Maddie: I didn’t know what I was learning for the music video. I thought I’d be swinging from a chandelier. Sia: [Laughs.] I remember that in the beginning, when we were doing the hissing cat face, it was embarrassing for you. Now you’ll do anything! You’re like, the weirder the better. The goofy face is your calling card. [Laughs.] Maddie: It’s fun doing weird faces. Sia: Yeah, it is, once you get into it. My goal is to give girls and boys a different idea of expression. It’s not always about looking pretty or cute. It’s about expressing yourself however that may be, even if that’s being silly or goofy or weird. I thank you for doing that with me because it was very brave. Maddie: No problem. Sia: [Laughs.] Dry as a bone. So funny. So the next thing that I want to ask is, Do you have any advice for me, Maddie? Not just how to do a French braid. Like I need your advice on what you think I should do next with my career. Maddie: [Laughs.] I mean, you always do the coolest things. I’m just a kid, so I really have no advice. Sia: [Laughs.] All right. My advice to you is always please tell me if you don’t want to do this anymore. If you ever feel like you are overwhelmed or you just want to be a kid, you let me know. Maddie: You’ve told me that before, and ever since, I think I’ve done better with how I handle a job. Before, if I didn’t want to do something, sometimes I would still say yes. Now I’m like, I don’t really want to; I just want to relax. I think that’s more important. Sia: Absolutely. You really need that time to find yourself with no responsibilities. Like I said, I think you work harder than most adults I know, so I feel very protective of you being overworked or not feeling like you have a voice. I think the art that we’ve made together has been about finding your voice. I want to make sure you do what you want artistically. Do you like TV? Movies?

Or music videos? What is your favorite so far? Maddie: I love doing music videos, because I love dancing and I like acting in them. I have loved being on a movie set—that was so cool—but I think my favorite thing is performing in front of a lot of people. Sia: Ah, amazing. Maddie: I get so nervous before I do it—I literally freak out and feel like I’m going to pee my pants. But when I’m out onstage, I forget about all of my nerves. The most nervous I was in my whole life was for the Grammys. I felt like it was the end of the world. Sia: I had no idea. Maddie: That’s because when I do work or a performance, I don’t want people to ever think that I am a pain in the butt or a drama queen because kids can be very dramatic sometimes. Even when I meet girls who look up to me, I want to be nice. I don’t want them left with a bad impression. Sia: That’s a lot of responsibility. It is hard because sometimes you want to walk around and be Maddie with a small m, and people are running up to you and see you as Maddie with a capital M. I hide my face because I want to live a private life. How does it feel when people come up to you and ask for your photo? Maddie: Sometimes it’s overwhelming. Sometimes people don’t even say hi to me. They just stick the phone in my face and say, like, “Take a picture with me.” And I am like, “Oh, okay.” But most of the people are so nice. Obviously I wouldn’t be here without people recording me. Sia: Ohhh, you are completely right. We would be nowhere without the people who care about us. You are so gracious and humble and very good at being famous. I don’t know how you do it. You are an inspiration for me! [Laughs.] I love you so much, and I can’t wait for you to send me that new video. Maddie: I will make it as soon as I get off this call. Sia: I love you, kid! Maddie: Love you!

hang out with her. And I love the Fifth Harmony girls. I can be their dancer—Sixth Harmony! Now that you’re done with Dance Moms, will you continue to compete? –@andressa_th

Who would you love to model your acting career after? –@lbarkle2

I still take classes [at Abby Lee Dance Company]. But I have a lot of professional dance jobs, so it’s really hard to continue to compete with the team—I don’t want to let them down when I can’t be there. But I will always keep dance in my life in some capacity.

Jennifer Lawrence. She is an amazing actor and can do anything. She can be really quirky, and she’s so funny in interviews I’ve seen. I’d love to see her do a Sia video parody. She would be amazing at “Cheap Thrills”!

What advice would you give to people who are just starting dance? –@kenziezieglr

Work hard and never stop believing in yourself. I was horrible when I first started dance. I’d never win, and I was always in the back of my group dances. I made it my main goal to be better. What’s your favorite thing about Abby? Is she as bad as she seems on the show? –@dancemcm

She’s definitely exactly how she is on the show! But the thing that I like about her most is she can actually be funny sometimes. And she also wanted me to be good. It’s nice that she paid a lot of attention to me, but it would be a little embarrassing because Abby would sometimes say, “Maddie’s the best so you need to do the move like her.” And then my friends would get a little mad. And I understand that, because they just want to be themselves, not try to be me. I feel like I had so much more pressure on me to be the best in the room. If you could be best friends with any celebrity, who would it be? –@mlotiofficial

Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid. Gigi is really sweet. I would love to

What do you do to calm down before a performance? –@henleeson

Usually I don’t really talk to anyone before I go onstage or before a scene. I just kind of relax. And I always cross my fingers. I don’t know why. I sit there, hoping for the best. You never know what’s going to happen. What’s something people would be surprised to know about you? –@dancemomplanet

I’m obsessed with watching facepainting tutorials on YouTube. They are so cool. I love this girl named MadeYewLook. When I just wanna chill, I grab my face paint, and I prop up my phone and follow the step-bystep. It’s therapeutic. My favorite one of all time that I did was a halfAvatar, half-human one. Would you ever plan to make a YouTube channel? Please do! –@mackzlover2

When I was younger, I had a YouTube channel where I did face-paint tutorials. [Editor’s note: It’s still up! Check out MaddiesHairAndMakeup.] It’s really bad because I was little. I did three makeup tutorials but stopped because I barely knew how to do it. I’d love to do a beauty channel if I had time.

Ariel. I think it would be sick to be a mermaid. I wouldn’t like the part with Ursula taking away my voice, but everything else is pretty cool. I mean, to brush your hair with a dinglehopper? And Flounder and Sebastian as best friends? Like, Prince Eric—he’s perfect. King Triton is a really cool dad. What was your last dream? –@crazykidcoe

I have scary dreams—my recurring nightmare is falling off a cliff—but the other night I had one that was just weird. I was with my friends at dance class and then these guys showed up and they were wearing masks—they looked like ninjas. It was kind of like Divergent. They took me and a friend on this zip-line thing, and it ended at a trampoline park. It’s hard to remember exactly how it finished because my mom always wakes me up right when I’m finishing a dream. It’s really annoying. Where do you see yourself in five years? Ten years? –@cookiebakergirl

When I’m 18, I’ll probably be in L.A. permanently, living with a roommate and a dog, keeping up with my dancing for sure and maybe doing a scripted television show. And in 10 years, hopefully I’m going to find a guy that I really, really like. I’m not allowed to date now, but I don’t even like anyone or have time anyway. If you had to describe your life in one word, what would it be? –@mxdisonzieglers

Incredible. Because I have some pretty cool friends and a really good family. I never thought I’d do any of this, or if I did, I thought I’d be much older. I have a lot of fun. It’s pretty cool. –AS TOLD TO HEATHER VIGGIANI

With almost a million Instagram followers, major fashion campaigns under her belt, and superfamous relatives (her dad is music legend Lionel Richie, and her big sis is Nicole), Sofia Richie sounds like she has everything. But as she approaches her 18th birthday this month, there’s only one thing the Beverly Hills, California–raised street style star wants: her independence. “My parents look at me like I’m the baby,” she says. “They can be a little overprotective.” Her dad “is like a mom-ager!” she jokes. “We’re super-close but he is very strict,” she adds. “He always wants me to be home with him. Sometimes we argue about that.” He does, however, support Sofia’s plan to move to NYC next year so she can work toward her goal of becoming a fashion designer. (She’s applied to Parsons School of Design.) “I’m so excited!” And she’s doing it for more than the likes. “My aspiration isn’t to be

And according to a Seventeen poll, nearly half of you feel that because you can’t vote, you have zero effect on the election. “No one asks what HEY, SMART GIRLS! Nope, not a heated debate with an Internet troll. Take a cue from the Nozell sisters, Emma, 16, and Addy, 18, and use social media to amplify your voice. Their Twitter account (@PrezSelfieGirls) got the candidates’ attention.

Addy: We live in New Hampshire, where politics is pretty much a state sport. Our parents dragged us to see the candidates, so we decided to make it fun and try to take selfies with them. Emma: By listening to the candidates, I started learning a lot, like what Common Core is. All of my friends are on social media, so we thought it would be a great place to share info with everyone.

Addy: People were learning about the election from our posts. A friend of my mom’s didn’t even know every candidate’s name! It was pretty awesome when the candidates started hearing about us. Hillary Clinton met with us privately three times, and Donald Trump came over to us and said, “Let’s get that selfie.” Emma: We’ve endorsed

Hillary Clinton. Now we’d like to get selfies with the vice presidential candidates—and maybe One Direction, too.

Addy: It’s nice to have fun, but it’s even better when you can make a difference.

I’m with VOYCE (Voices of Youth in Chicago Education), which raises awareness of issues that are important to me, such as education and racial justice. Recently we met with state legislators about a bill to end the school-to-prison pipeline [where zero-tolerance policies push kids into the prison system]. WHICH POLITICAL PARTY IS MORE YOUR STYLE?

Skip your Frappuccinos for a week and give any savedup cash to the politician(s) you support instead. (Every dollar helps—just ask Bernie Sanders!)

IF YOU ANSWERED MOSTLY B’s . . . It shows you think more conservatively, like a lot of Republicans. See what they’re passionate about at gop.com.

This quiz will help you see which way you lean. 1 I believe in same-sex marriage. A Yes. B No. 2 When it comes to abortion, I’m: A Pro-choice. B Pro-life. 3 My environmental mantra: A I want to adopt every animal that’s losing its habitat. B I love the planet, but it’s not my No. 1 priority. 4 Government should: A Be involved in everything, from health care to jobs. B Mind its own business—we’ve got this. 5 When it comes to gun reform: A We need tougher restrictions. B Second amendment, yo! 6 Where do you stand on minimum wage? A Raise it. B Keep it the same. 7 Illegal immigrants should be allowed to stay in the country. A Yes. B No.

IF YOU ANSWERED MOSTLY A’s . . . You lean liberal, like many Democrats. To learn more about their agenda, check out democrats.org.

“I’m a Democrat” “During my freshman year, I started getting interested in issues like social justice, the environment, women’s rights, and poverty reduction. Whenever I heard Democrats talking about those issues, I’d always say, ‘Yes, that’s just what I was thinking.’ I find what young Democrats are doing around these topics very inspiring.” –Celia, 17, Glencoe, IL

IF YOU ANSWERED A MIX . . . Your views may not fit a mold—like the 42 percent of Americans who identify as Independent.

“I’m Independent”

“I’m a Republican”

“I have no political affiliation. I interact with so many kids my age who all have different political backgrounds. It made me realize I’d rather vote for the candidate who will best run our country, not necessarily the political party I think is best.”

“I fell in love with history in seventh grade. The more interested I got in the past, the more I wondered about what was happening in the present. So I started watching the news and realized my beliefs aligned most with the Republican Party. For me, being a Republican is about a love and pride for my country and a belief that government should be small.”

Voting This Year?

Big Idea #7

Be a Trailblazer for the Next Generation of Voters Fight for future rights! In some states, 17-year-olds are allowed to vote in the primaries if they’ll be 18 by the general election. But the fact that not all states are on the same page with this has some teens bummed out. “I’m concerned that so many voices are being left out of political conversations that affect everyone,” says Anna, 17, who is part of Vote16SF, a group of San Francisco, CA, teens working to expand voting rights and lower the voting age. Maddie’s Pick!

Your Classic Crush Zac Efron

age: 28

@zacefron This A-lister (and star of two LOL movies, Neighbors 2 and Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates) is Maddie Ziegler’s pick for hottest guy of summer. Can’t argue with that!

On his ideal relationship “I’d love to meet a girl that knows nothing about me,” he’s said. (Sorry, Maddie!) Another priority? “The most important thing for me in a relationship is honesty.” On his smooching history “In the fifth grade, a game of Truth or Dare turned into ‘make out with the other person’,” he’s told Seventeen. “I was the only boy with a bunch of girls. I was pretty stoked.” What Maddie says “I started crushing on Zac when I first saw High School Musical. I thought he was such a good dancer and singer. But then as he started to get older, I was like, Wow. He’s supercute. Now I love all of his movies, like 17 Again and Neighbors. My dream would be to meet him one day, and I will totally fangirl when it happens.”

Your Fave British Import Brooklyn Beckham age: 17 @Brooklynbeckham He’s a model, an athlete, and a photographer, but there’s one job this cutie does best: regular guy. On his relationship It was too cute when Brooklyn and Chloë Grace Moretz made it Insta official with heart emojis and a “bae” caption. But the way they got to know each other is also adorable. “I think [we met] at SoulCycle,” Chloë has said. “That’s how it is! Every Hollywood love story starts at SoulCycle.” On staying grounded With mega-famous parents, Brooklyn has been in the public eye since he was born. But he credits his rideor-die BFFs with keeping him humble. “I have really close friends who have known me since I was very young, so nothing ever changes with them,” he said. “We go to football matches, the skatepark, and music festivals.” On his future plans Think it would be cool if you went to college and Brooklyn lived in your dorm? It could happen! He wants to go to college in the US. “I’m hoping to study art,” he said. “I love football but would also love a career in photography. Who knows. . . . ”

Your Nerdy-hot BFF Joey Graceffa age: 25

@Joeygraceffa

The YouTuber is full of secrets in his new mystery series, Escape the Night With Joey Graceffa, but he’s an open book when it comes to dating. On the perfect date “The best dates are when emotions are really heightened. That’s how it was on my first date with my boyfriend, Dan—we had a picnic in the mountains— and I knew it could be the start of something big. This year we even re-created it for Valentine’s Day.” On his downtime “When I’m not working— which is pretty rare!—I love playing games with my friends. I like The Settlers of Catan, and I recently got into a big Monopoly phase. And my other obsession? Audio books! I always listen

to Harry Potter. It just puts me in a good mood.” On puppy love “As a kid, I wished for a puppy and finally got one, but we had to get rid of him a few months later because my family moved. I was so heartbroken. For years, I didn’t want to get another one—I was scared to go through that again. But something in me was just like, You need a dog. Now I’m the proud dad of two huskies— Wolf and Storm. Storm is like his name; Wolf is calmer. They’re lovebugs.”

Your New music otp Jordan Fisher age: 22

@ jordan fisher

He crushed it in Grease: Live and this summer he’s heating things up with a debut album you’ll keep playing on repeat. On finding his passion “When I was in the fifth grade, I had a crush on a girl who was in the drama club, so I joined too— and that’s how I fell in love with the arts. She’s married now, but I should probably tell her she was my inspiration.” On his first kiss “My first proper kiss was on Halloween when I was 14. I had just asked this girl to be my girlfriend, and we went trick-or-treating together. Later that night, I lifted up her chin and kissed her. It was super-romantic.” On impressing girls with music “Every once in a while, I’ll sing at BECKHAM, GRACEFFA, AND FISHER: GET T Y IMAGES.

this jazz night in Hollywood, and Selena Gomez came one time. It’s impossible not to have a massive crush on her. I can’t remember what song I was singing, but I fully sang straight to her. I’ve never actually met her, but I wonder if she would remember.” On his female BFF “Olivia Holt is one of my best friends on Earth. She’s the first friend I made in L.A. eight years ago, and we have been inseparable ever since. We’ve never dated or even thought about it. Everyone should have a close friend of the opposite sex. It’s a special thing.”

Shameik Moore

age: 21

@meaksworld You’ll be all Netflix and no chill when you catch his dance moves on the new streaming series The Get Down.

104

On why he loves hip-hop “I went to a prep school as a kid where I was taught that hip-hop is devil music. My dad didn’t like that, so he took me to see the movie You Got Served. When I saw the dancing and the girls, I was like, Yup. This is for me.” On dealing with rejection “When I was younger, I met Zendaya a few times, and I had a massive crush on her. I was too nervous to ask her out, and I didn’t know how to speak to girls yet. I would just hit her up all the

time by text, so I completely overdid it and turned her off. That’s still embarrassing to this day.” On communication “I’m an in-themoment guy. I love social media, but I’d much rather have a conversation in person. But if I’m dating someone and we’re apart, you bet I’m going to call, text, and FaceTime her.” On his type “The first thing that attracts me to someone is her spirit. I like a girl who has her own personality, speaks her mind, and knows how to express herself artistically. Of course I love beautiful women, but it goes so much further than that. I’m looking for someone who pushes me to be a better person.”

Your Excuse to binge-watch

Your lifelong love Nick Jonas

age: 23 @NickJonas Between his new album, Last Year Was Complicated, and a tour with Demi Lovato, it’s safe to say you’ll feel close to this hottie all summer. On handling heartbreak If you’ve heard Nick’s new album, you know it gets emotional. The music was inspired by his split from his girlfriend of two years, Olivia Culpo. “I made a point to tell stories as honestly as I could,” he said. “It became very clear what it was going to be about after the breakup. I just dove in headfirst and wrote about all of it . . . I think it was the most meaningful relationship I’ve been in.” On dating dos and don’ts Nick doesn’t have a type, but there’s one thing he needs in a girl to make a relationship work. “If they can’t hang with my family or get along with my friends, that’s a deal breaker,” he said. “The key is finding someone who brings something to the table. They have to inspire me in some way.” On his summer tour mate As he gears up to hit the road, he couldn’t be more pumped to do it with his BFF. “I love Demi to death,” he said. “She’s one of the most talented, passionate people I know. I’m grateful to have her as a friend and also as a business partner.”

Your Boy Next door Gavin MacIntosh age: 17

@thegavinmacintosh

This Fosters star knows a thing or two about being a total gentleman. On coming out of his shell “I was shy as a kid and the hide-behind-my-mom type. That changed after I joined the theater when I was 10. I had to interact with so many people, and it helped me grow up.” On his first crush “In second grade I had my eye on this girl who sat next to me in class. One day on the playground, she convinced me to race the other kids to see who was the fastest. I was just trying to impress her, but halfway through the race, I tripped and fell. Everyone

laughed at me. Unfortunately, our relationship didn’t end up going anywhere.” On being the best boyfriend ever “My girlfriend, Brooke, is allergic to flowers, and no one had ever gotten them for her before. So I got her a bouquet of fake ones, and she loved them. Another time, she’d been talking about how she wanted to go night swimming in the ocean. So for her birthday, I took her to dinner by the beach and then we went into the waves. I’d definitely say I’m a romantic.”

Your Taylor-Approved Obsession Dominic Sherwood Age: 26 @domsherwood He may play a bad boy on Shadowhunters, but one look into his (different-colored!) eyes and you’ll see right into his sweet soul.

On his celeb crush “I had a massive crush on Taylor Swift for a while. I was nervous to meet her, but she was completely lovely and charming—I was a little bit smitten. Two years ago, my phone went off and my housemate looked at me and said, ‘Dude, I think you just got a message from Taylor Swift.’ She had sent me a text asking me to star in her ‘Style’ music video . . . and of course I said yes!” On ugly crying “I burst into tears watching Inside Out on a plane. I was sitting next to a businessman who kept giving me weird looks, and I just looked back at him like, Just watch the movie, dude. You’ll understand.”

On being friends first “My girlfriend, Sarah [Hyland], and I met while filming Vampire Academy, and we were friends for two and a half years before we realized we were in love. I definitely think that’s the best way to go. She already knew all my dirty little secrets, so it was a very secure place—it’s not like either of us was going to be surprised by anything that we didn’t know about each other.”

Your Mr. Cool AF

Nyjah Huston age: 21 @nyjah Even though he is one of the greatest skateboarders in the world, this high-flying pro athlete is so down-to-earth. On his dating history “I had a little bit of a late start with dating because my dad was really strict. When I was 9, I was skating and some girl kissed me on the cheek and he was like, ‘What are you doing? You should be skating!’ But I’m thankful he kept me so focused. I finally started dating when I was 15, and now I have an awesome social life, so I don’t regret it at all. I like girls who are laid-back and fun to hang out with.” On why he gives back “When my family lived in Puerto Rico, sometimes my brothers and I had to walk 30 minutes to bring back fresh water. That made me realize there are people around the world who have to carry it for miles and miles, so I started a charity called Let It Flow [letitflow .org], which helps build and repair wells all over the world. Helping others is one of the best feelings there is.” On the words he lives by “Never forget where you came from. My mother keeps me focused and reminds me how much hard work it took to get to where I am today. She always keeps me in check.”

SNAP MISHAP

“I love Snapchat, and my top friend is usually my bestie, Jenny. I’ve started to develop feelings toward my best guy friend, so I’ve been trying really hard to keep my Snaps to him cute instead of silly. Recently, I had this horrible pimple on my nose that kind of looked like a witch’s wart. Naturally, I took the ugliest selfie I could—pointing out the volcano and making the worst double chin—and sent it to the first person on my Snap list, assuming it was Jenny. Wrong! When I checked to see if she’d opened it, I noticed that my crush had replaced her as my top friend. He hadn’t opened it yet, but I nervously watched the little arrow until I could see that he had. I was so embarrassed, and he told me he was confused. I couldn’t look him in the eye for a week!” 112 SEVENTEEN.COM / AUGUST 2016

Oh. My. Awkward.

TERRIBLE TAN LINES “Over the summer, I decided to get a spray tan because I was so pale. I was wearing a pair of lace underwear while I was getting it done but didn’t think anything of it. Well, the tanning spray totally seeped through the lace and left the design on my hips. It wouldn’t have been a problem except for the fact that I had swim practice the next day. When I changed into my suit, I realized it came up so high on my hips that it totally revealed the thick lace pattern. Everyone could tell I’d gotten a spray tan! That’s the last time I ever try to fake it—lesson learned!”

Screen of Shame “I led a conference panel for 200 students, and I had a break before my presentation, so I watched Netflix to help me relax. When it came time to present, I plugged my laptop into the AV system. Somehow, even though the video on my computer had been paused and minimized, it started playing what I’d been watching: The Suite Life of Zack and Cody—my guilty pleasure! I scrambled to exit out of it, but everyone saw and started laughing. I disconnected my laptop, exited out of the browser, and plugged it back in. Everybody laughed again— this time at my Harry Styles wallpaper. After that, I looked up only when I had to speak.”

On the Menu: One Hot Mess

“I’m a hostess at a restaurant and really into one of the cooks. I was in the kitchen during a break, watching him work, when my manager told me to be careful of a spill a few steps away. A bit later, I moved to get out of my crush’s way and slipped on the mess. Trying not to fall, I threw my arms up—and knocked him down with me. He was carrying an order, so we both ended up on the ground, covered in food. Worse, my manager snapped a pic. It’s now in his office, and it reminds me of how bad it was: I’m all red and almost in tears!”

PHOTOS: GET T Y IMAGES (3). (MODEL USED FOR ILLUSTRATIVE PURPOSES ONLY.)

AWKWARD HUG I was in a meeting with execs from my record label to determine which songs would go on my second album and which singles would be coming out next. It was basically a listening party with all the important people—we were sitting in a circle, the music was playing, and it was great. Then one guy got up to leave, so I got up to walk over and hug him goodbye. I don’t know what happened, but somehow I lost my balance, fell onto him, and slid down his entire body until I hit the floor! It was kind of terrifying—and terrible!

Feb 19–Mar 20 Near the 7th, when

logical Mercury is in opposition with intuitive Neptune, you’ll need to make one of those tricky head-versus-heart choices. The outcome will be smooth (no worries), but the process itself may be draining. Soothe your Pisces soul with a walk on the beach or a relaxing pedi!

Mar 21–Apr 19 If you’re gearing up

Jul 23–Aug 22

Oct 23–Nov 21 When Venus moves into your zone of success on the 2nd, you’ll crush a long-time goal, scoring the recognition you deserve. The stars could put you in the path of some VIPs on the 17th, so treat yourself to a profesh #OOTD before then. Dressing the part will give you next-level confidence!

Talk about an epic month, B-day girl! The new moon in your sign on the 2nd will start August off with a bang, infusing you with boundless energy and good vibes. Not only that, but the lunar eclipse in your relationships zone on the 18th means a potential bae could be coming your way!

Nov 22–Dec 21 Pack your bags, Sag: That snoozy routine you’ve fallen into is about to get shaken up in a major way. On the 2nd, the new moon will offer up an exciting trip opportunity; with active Mars in your corner then too, you’ll have the energy to plan it, book it, and recruit a few BFFs to join you. Take Snaps!

Apr 20–May 20 Good luck to anyone

By the time Venus links up with lucky Jupiter on the 27th, you and this special someone could be ready to DTR.

Dec 22–Jan 19 A girl in your crew tends to run hot or cold (you know the one), creating a lot of emotional chaos in your world. Fortunately, you’ll get an assist from Saturn on the 13th! in your relationships area, this will be a crazy-romantic month! Venus will hook up with your ruler, Uranus, on the 1st, creating serious sparks between you and a geeky-cool type. You can expect even more fireworks on the 18th when a lunar eclipse makes it a five-star day for love.

Jun 21–Jul 22 Missing your besties who have been on vacay or at sleepaway? Just hold on till the 2nd, when Venus helps you all reconnect IRL. By the time I was in high school, I’d spent most of my life in some type of uniform. I wore one for the all-girls Catholic school I attended, for my tennis team, and for cheerleading squad. One night my sophomore year, as I cheered at a football game, I looked into the stands and realized how robotically similarly all of my classmates were dressed. Every girl seemed to be wearing the same sweater over the same tank top with the same jeans. I thought to myself, My God, we’re out of school and still in a uniform. What are we doing? Around this same time, I started getting frustrated and confused as to why we cheerleaders didn’t cheer for our own sports team but only for the boys at our brother school. I remember overhearing a man hyping up the football team before a big game saying, “Don’t let those dumb cheerleaders distract you.” That was my breaking point. I was done cheering on anyone who didn’t respect me. There had been a little voice in my head telling me something wasn’t right and I was finally ready to pay attention to it. For the first time, I started to ask myself what I wanted. Turns out I didn’t want to wear the same outfit as every other girl. Maybe I wanted to go out in a full-length cape and combat boots or wear a gown and a leather jacket. I took the “shoulds” out of my life (You should wear this or you should say this) and it was an amazing feeling! The summer between sophomore and junior years, I started exploring thrift stores and discovered my love of vintage clothes. I started going out downtown
