Paint isn’t permanent—though sometimes it feels like it is if you factor in costs and the work. That’s why figuring out a new color scheme for a room or an entire house can leave us paralyzed with indecision. Creating a harmonious palette in a vacuum is challenging, so many of us play it safe with shades of white-on-white or neutrals. But even then, which white? What counts as a neutral? How do I best branch out to pastels or primaries? I have a terrible time coming up with a color scheme on command—like when you’re stumped for a word and the more you try to ferret it out, the more blank your head feels—so I don’t even try. Instead, I move on and think about or do something else. Then a few minutes later, the plan miraculously appears. I remember years ago waffling over the colors for a website I was designing. The answer came to me in the shower. (I don’t know about you, but ideas also come to me while I’m driving or cooking.) Right in front of me was an orange shaving cream cap, a turquoise bar of soap, and a pale yellow shampoo bottle—that became the new palette for the home page. The point is to always be open and subconsciously searching. I fi nd color combos everywhere, most often out in nature on a forest walk or a beach stroll picking up shells and stones. Sometimes it’s a flower
BOLTS FROM THE BLUE
arrangement I see at a farmers market or create from the garden. When I feel truly blocked, I seek out the art of master colorists like Turner, Frankenthaler, and Magritte— a corner of a painting often yields the solution. Using social media, we have more opportunities than ever to fi nd inspiration by following color experts whose eye we admire. They may be flower farmers, potters, foragers, or photographers. They may be fashion designers whose haute couture we could never afford but whose artistic vision is free to be enjoyed by all in a video of their show. The challenge is to be able to sift through the visual chaos and receive those bolts from the blue when they fortuitously occur. Keep your eyes open and your mind receptive— and be assured your answer (a successful STEPHEN ORR, color scheme) will come Editor in Chief instagram @steporr when you least expect it.

know-how FUN FACT
The No. 1 recycler of plastic bags? Trex Composite Decking. Find your drop-off: trex.com /recycling.
Recycling simplified
Melanie Mannarino, author of The (Almost) Zero Waste Guide, tracked down some of the most common curbside conundrums so you can raise your recycling game.
Plastic bottles Anything that has a neck for a screwon lid is likely recyclable, says Mitch Hedlund, executive
director of Recycle Across America. But double-check your town’s rules. Most recycle #1 and #2 plastics (find the number in the little triangle on the bottle). But there are seven total numbered plastics, and rules vary widely. Recycling your #5 yogurt container in a city that takes only #1s and #2s does more harm than good. Caps? Screw them on unless the label or your town says otherwise.
Cardboard
Skip
Jars
Make it a habit to skip straws and specify, “No cutlery, please!” when you order takeout.
Great news for anyone wondering how much water they’re wasting trying to rinse that last bit of peanut butter from the jar: The EPA says “spatula clean”— scraping out as much residue as you can— is good enough.
PLASTIC STRAWS AND UTENSILS
MIXED MATERIALS
Items like toothpaste tubes and floss containers mix metals and plastics. A surprise no-no: disposable coffee cups—they’re paper coated in plastic.
Plastic film
PLASTIC BAGS
Remove and trash the plastic in tissue boxes and cellophane from pasta cartons before recycling—but don’t stress if you forget; it won’t spoil the batch. Window envelopes, coupons, and sticky notes can go in with paper.
Tossing in even one grocery bag or paper towel wrapper (or putting recyclables in a trash bag) can jam processing machines or divert entire truckloads to the landfill. Supermarkets, municipal buildings, and libraries often have drop boxes.
D h tr ay
Ea
Gooey cheese melted on a pizza box could imperil all the clean cardboard next to it. Modern technology can handle paper with minor grease stains, says Nena Shaw
of the EPA. But if it’s loaded with food residue, trash it.

Most of us think we know how to recycle, but our bins say otherwise. In the U.S., just 32% of items that can be recycled end up in the proper bin. The EPA’s goal is 50% by 2030. Here’s info to help us get there.

decoding If you’re new to rain capture, here’s what to know. SIZE Standard barrel
Understanding the most common types of barrels.
sizes: 50, 65, and 80 gallons. ●
HARDWARE We like
1
a sturdy solid-brass spigot for filling up watering cans. Placement should be low on the barrel but allow for easy can clearance. ●
PO LYM E R
Sturdy plastic designed in various styles and colors. PROS: Durable, UV-resistant, and lightweight. CONS: Can be costly.
DRAINAGE Check for
a hose-accessible drain placed near the bottom of the barrel to easily access every drop of water (remember to empty it before first freeze). ●
2
LID You’ll want a tight-
WOO D
fitting screen lid to keep out mosquitos and debris— and curious pets and kids. ●
OVERFLOW Look
for an overflow spout or hose near the top of your barrel to redirect excess water away from your foundation. It can be added later as a basic hose-connected diverter kit, but it’s nice to start with one. The smaller your barrel, the more important an overflow diverter is. ●
PRESSURE Gravity-
fed systems work when the barrel spigot is higher than the hose in your hand. You can elevate your barrel but use a sturdy, well-built platform. (A full rain barrel can weigh up to 500 pounds.) Or get a booster pump that connects hose to barrel and provides pressurized water at the flip of a switch.
Time to harvest a new crop—rainwater! You’ll abate runoff, cut your water bill, and promote conservation of this precious resource each time you pull out the hose. OUR PICK
EcoCascata by Algreen (65 gallon). It’s got a ceramiclike texture—plus a planter on top. Retails for about $250 including oversize shipping rates.
Pairs modern features with natural material. PROS: Attractive and less likely to be windblown. CONS: Heavy, can be expensive, and requires upkeep.
3
U PCYC LE D
Repurposed garbage cans or barrels that once held food or oil. PROS: Lightweight and cheap. CONS: Can wear out quickly; must fashion a lid (open-top barrels are unsafe).
BOLD PRINT Most states encourage rain collection, though some areas have restrictions on the amount and method. Check with your local government before installing more than one 50-gallon barrel.

GOSOLAR
The expression means something different now than when we ran this “Solar House” in 1947. But the passive solar design by David Barrow holds up: “The secret of comfort lies not in the amount of glass, but in how well the summer sun is kept off it. Roof overhangs do the job; they shade the glass from mid-spring to mid-fall. During cold months, the sun angles in under the overhang, and helps the heating plant do its job less expensively.” ■ Wanna go solar in ’22? Start at energysage.com. REUSE, REFILL & REDUCE
We’re used to reusable bottles and concentrated refills for cleaning products, and now you can find the same eco-friendly format in the beauty aisle. It’s an especially good choice for liquid body wash, which tends to come with a lot of plastic packaging. Dove Body Wash Reusable Bottle + Concentrate Refills ($10, target.com) includes a refillable bottle made with 100% recycled plastic (there’s also an aluminum bottle option) and concentrated refills that reduce waste and save you money.

Making your shower game more sustainable doesn’t require a major overhaul. Start simple: Being conscious of how much water you’re using in the shower can make a big impact, says sustainability expert Jen Novakovich. She recommends investing in a low-flow showerhead and being quick, which also has beauty benefits. “Long showers can strip the skin of its natural oils and impair the skin’s barrier function,” says Los Angeles dermatologist Onyeka Obioha, M.D. See our smart product picks that make it easy (and affordable) to be kinder to the planet.

| April 2022
Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme are more than herbs and folk lyrics. They’re calming hues that can turn your space into a retreat. What’s more, these serene greens are among the most easygoing neutrals because they’re everywhere in nature and pair well with nearly every color. It’s no wonder experts are giving these herbaceous shades the proverbial green light right now.

WALLS With soft blue undertones, sage green is “calming but enough color to make it still feel exciting,” Hammel says.
2
ARTWORK Because this wall color can skew toward surrounding tones, Hammel selected an art piece with similar pastoral hues.
3
ACCENTS Hammel balanced the walls’ paleness with darker light fixtures and bedside tables. The contrast keeps the room from appearing washed out.
4 5
CURTAINS AND BED Stripes add a geometric element without feeling “overly busy,” Hammel says, “which is especially important when it’s in a neutral palette like this.” She chose varied widths so they don’t look too matchy.

FRESH GREENS
QUICK FIX Designer Miles Redd often matches millwork to the wall color, creating a cohesive envelope in a jiffy. In this mudroom, he colored every inch in Farrow & Ball Olive. “I love a mossy green,” he says. “I find it works with everything. If you’re looking for a little twist or foil, it can add interest without clashing.”
Each year, major paint brands select a Color of the Year. If 2022’s winners are any indication, our walls can go green now too.

To supply a new build with instant coziness, designer Mark Cunningham transformed a white box into a cocoon of earth tones. Inspired by the sofa’s sage linen, he painted walls and trim tone-ontone green (similar to Benjamin Moore Avon Green). Varying the finishes—flat on the walls, satin on the trim—adds depth, while furnishings in a range of sandy hues give the room warmth and texture. ■

EASTE R BAS KET A basic half-peck basket blooms with a bouquet of sola wood flowers. Watereddown craft paint colors the flower petals, accents on the basket, and the wood eggs. The color wash is more forgiving than undiluted paint—no clumps or visible brushstrokes— and allows the wood grain to show.
WE LOVE Sola flowers are soft, pliable, and made from renewable plant fiber.
FRI EN DLY C REAT UR E S Spring chickens and their handsome bunny pals are easy to assemble from wood balls (also known as doll heads and ball knobs). Kids will enjoy helping with gluing the pieces, painting them, and adding painted shapes for feet, ears, wings, tails, and beaks.

PUNCH Y PATT ERN S Decorate wood eggs with playful patterns made from vinyl tape (think electrical tape). Tape is available from 3 mm to 4 inches wide. Use craft punches to create dot and flower stencils from the tape, then firmly press shapes onto eggs. Paint with a slightly dry brush to give designs a crisp edge. Remove tape with tweezers.
N E ST EG GS QUICK TIP Use the same color wash as on page 28 to let the wood grain shine through.
Create colorful surprises when you paint two-piece wood eggs and fill them with grass, candy, and fluffy faux chicks. Graduated sizes of unfilled eggs neatly nest together.

h
ayley Francis grew up spending summers and weekends at the family beach house. She remembers beachcombing and making art projects with her late mother, Laurie, also a designer. Hayley still visits regularly, as do her sister, nieces, and nephew, so creating the tiny home was all about making more space for the family to gather and keeping the special times going. “It was a dream project,” she says. With the help of Seattle architect/designer Seth Grizzle of Graypants, Hayley incorporated a private bedroom, an effi cient and stylish kitchen, and a small but luxe bathroom. Vaulted ceilings, French doors where the garage doors were, and generous windows make the guesthouse feel large and airy. Budget-wise secondhand furniture and open shelving balance decorative extras such as brass plumbing fixtures and statement lighting. And for rainy days or movie nights, there’s a built-in projector above the sleeper sofa and a pull-down screen mounted above the window seat.
FLEXIBLE FURNITURE Hayley uses this sitting spot for breakfast and when remotely running her design business, Neon Doves. The expandable table, an old family piece, pulls up to the window seat. The built-ins include niches tall enough to stow the stools.
A box beam upgrades the look of the ceiling peak and hides electrical wiring for light fixtures.
I LOVE SOAPSTONE. IT FEELS ROCKY. IT’S A WAY OF BEING BEACHY WITHOUT BEING LITERAL. HAYLEY FRANCIS
CENTER OF ATTENTION ”I wanted a ‘wall’ kitchen, not a corner kitchen,” Hayley says. “I felt it would make the space feel much more open.” Because the setup is on full display, she gave it big-kitchen style with a wall-mount faucet and sconces in brass. The backsplash is only 3½×6½ feet, allowing her to use a single slab of soapstone.

TINY HOME Q&A
What to know before converting a garage into a guesthouse.
1
WHAT ’S TH E CO D E ?
B E D ROO M
S I D E E NTR AN C E
Each room benefits from the spaciousness that comes with the vaulted ceiling. Vintage burled-wood nightstands, a caned headboard, and window trim all in the same tone ground the bedroom.
A door on the side of the house leads to the private spaces off the back hallway: bedroom, bathroom, and a loft that’s accessible by a rolling ladder. A linen closet is opposite the bathroom door.
A porthole window plays off the home’s beach location.
As with all building and remodeling projects, first contact your city government office about local and state codes regarding what’s allowed. As tiny homes or accessory dwelling units (ADUs) have become popular, especially in response to housing shortages, some areas have relaxed their regulations. Note that having a septic system can complicate the permit process.
2
WHAT ABO UT R E SALE ?
As long as the permits are in order, “ADUs affect property value positively in most cases,” says agent Martha Saly of Better Homes and Gardens® Real Estate Wine Country Group in Sebastopol, CA.

Hayley took a cue from all-in-one European baths and specified a wet room: Hexagonal ceramic tiles cover all the surfaces, eliminating the need for a shower stall. “I’ve always wanted a fully tiled bath, and this ended up saving us space,” she says.
Maximizing every inch, a custom cushion fills a berth built into the highest section of the ceiling. With no inches to spare for furniture, a wall sconce accommodates nighttime reading.
Hayley’s decision to remodel was more for sentimental reasons than cost savings. Have an architect help you weigh your options. n

A tool-savvy pet owner discovered a clever, decorative way to let her sleeping dogs lie cozily without taking up floor space.
i
nspired by a custom built-in dog kennel in a friend’s house, Jessi Way figured out how to make one by retrofitting a laundry room cabinet in her own Carmel, IN, home. She converted a base cabinet into a safe, comfortable hangout and sleeping spot for her two dogs, Frankee, a Boston terrierpapillon mix, and BigBoy, a Chihuahua. “I found a way to make unused space functional for our needs,” says Jessi, who shares her house projects on Instagram (@thegoodwrench). To spruce up the rest of the room after completing the kennel, Jessi painted the walls, added a pink glass-tile backsplash, and built a pair of floating shelves. What she describes as her easiest do-it-yourself project is also her most practical: The kennel is used daily for dog naps and bedtime, and to keep the pair secure when Jessi isn’t home. “The dogs love it. This is their house, and they know it,” she says.

WHATSHEDID
Jessi spent only four hours and less than $100 adapting a standard base cabinet. She was happy to get rid of the dogs’ freestanding crate, which made the laundry room feel cramped.
Vinyl decals on a painted background provide a cute dog-level view.
1
WOOD DOORS
After removing the cabinet doors, Jessi cut out the fi xed shelf inside using an oscillating multi-tool. For new doors, she took apart a threepanel pet gate from HomeGoods, then positioned new hinges to work with the cabinet openings. She mounted the doors to the face frame so they align in the center.
46

2
DOOR LATCH
Thin magnetic drawer latches keep the doors in place. When the dogs are inside the kennel, a stainlesssteel flip latch on the doors adds security.
3
TILE SURFACE
For easy cleanup (accidents do happen), Jessi decided to tile the bottom of the cabinet and
partway up the sides. The small space didn’t take long to do, and she enjoyed the chance to practice her tiling skills. She chose 12×24-inch porcelain tiles from Home Depot to cover the most surface area with the fewest grout lines. With a wet-tile saw, she cut each piece to size. Once the tile was in place and had set overnight, she applied leftover grout from another project and caulked the edges
to cover any cracks or rough spots.
4
FINAL TOUCHES
A fabric-wrapped cushion covers the tiled cabinet bottom. Just for fun, Jessi decorated the inside of the kennel. She painted the side surfaces a soothing blue-gray and applied whimsical vinyl decals cut with a Cricut machine. ■

ven tiny flowers can make a big impression when they appear in profusion, as they do with spring-blooming groundcovers. But the plants in this large category are also workhorses. Phlox, sweet woodruff, and bugleweed are some of the best known. “They’re beautiful problem solvers,” says Sandra Gerdes, BH&G® Test Garden manager. As with other groundcovers, they hold soil in place, crowd out weeds, and fill in bare spots. And when they bloom, butterflies and other pollinators take notice. PL ANT PI C K S

CONDITIONS Sunny spots suit most groundcovers, but they adapt well to shade, particularly dappled light. ■
WHEN TO PLANT Spring and early summer are the ideal times to plant groundcovers. Their roots are shallow, so it’s easy to make room for them. Firm the soil around them after planting and water once a week while they are becoming established. It’s fi ne to start with small plants, as groundcovers grow quickly. WHERE TO PLANT Gerdes recommends planting under trees, at the edges of fl owerbeds, and around the skirts of larger perennials. Spring-blooming groundcovers also work well with spring-fl owering bulbs. Phlox looks spectacular planted at the top of a stone wall, where it can cascade gracefully.

1 Groundcovers make natural additions to rock gardens. Basket-of-gold likes afternoon shade where summers are hot and can take full sun in cool climates. 2 The snow-white fl owers of evergreen, drought-tolerant candytuft bloom for up to 10 weeks. 3 Bugleweed covers quickly with leaves that can be dark purple, golden, or variegated. 4 Creeping thyme spreads between stepping-stones and will bloom for several weeks.
Along a pathway or in a rock garden, creeping thyme “just needs a nook and a cranny with a little bit of soil, and it’s as happy as can be,” she says.
MAINTENANCE Cut off the spent fl ower heads of bugleweed, bergenia, and foamfl ower. To keep candytuft and basket-of-gold full and bushy, cut them back by up to one-half after ■
blooms fade. Other groundcovers don’t need to be trimmed. Fertilizing isn’t necessary. PROPAGATION Divide plants in spring just after they bloom, moving ■
divisions to another spot. Phlox and dead nettle can also be propagated from stem cuttings. Root them directly in the garden or in small pots. SOURCES bluestoneperennials.com, witsendgardens.com ■ ■
STANDOUT SCENT The leaves of ‘Ingwersen’s
Variety’ geranium are especially fragrant and turn bronze in fall. The plant thrives in shade or sun (with a little extra watering). 60

French toast cubes
Need a morning pick-me-up? Sometimes all it takes is a fresh shape to update an old favorite. Cutting a loaf of bread into cubes rather than slices turns French toast into bite-size finger food. A crunchy coating of cinnamon-sugar covers the cubes, while the insides stay soft and custardy. It’s a breakfast built to bring a smile.
A serious upgrade to those French toast fingers we loved at the breakfast buffet, the shape of the bread makes all the difference in this otherwise simple dish. The easiest way to cut a crusty loaf into cubes is to halve it first. Place each half on its flat side and cut into a 2-inch grid, then cut the strips into squares. Once they’re cooked, tumble some berries over the top and drizzle the pile with honey or serve the cubes with mascarpone whipped cream, nut butter, jam, or maple syrup for dipping. n

Ruth’s Haroset
For Brooklyn-based food writer and entrepreneur Jeffrey Yoskowitz, celebrating Passover offers a special reason to think of his grandmother and reflect on his family’s history.
i
THE SEDER PLATE During Passover, we tell the story of Jewish peoples’ liberation from slavery and the exodus from Egypt through a ritual feast called a Seder. The foods on the Seder plate symbolize parts of the story. Haroset (at top right on the plate) symbolizes the mortar enslaved Israelites used when building Egyptian cities.

t’s hard to know if haroset, the sweet Passover spread that appears on ritual Seder plates around the world, is as tasty as it seems or if the dish merely stands out among the shank bones, parsley, and horseradish that typically feature in the holiday ritual. Either way, every year it is the star of my family’s Seder. Growing up, I always felt the eight days of Passover were different from the rest of the year. Perhaps it was the lush smells of springtime, the unusual holiday foods we stocked to meet Passover’s strict dietary constraints of no grains or leavened breads, or the maniacal cleaning we’d undertake to rid the house of any crumbs. I don’t quite know how the ritual of making haroset with Grandma Ruth began, but for decades we prepped the dish together, just the two of us. Grandma started by deftly peeling and coring apples. She deputized me to chop them, along with walnuts. We used her oldfashioned wooden chopping bowl and

hochmesser (a mezzaluna blade), which gave me license to pulverize the nuts and fruit with all my might. She sprinkled cinnamon, saying “you can never use too much,” and poured Manischewitz wine into the bowl. We mixed it together, tasting spoonfuls. There was no recipe, just the taste-memories of generations before her. Grandma Ruth’s raison d’être is feeding loved ones. In her kitchen I watched in awe as she tasted everything for proper spicing, even raw meat. When I was 9 or 10, I followed her around to record her recipe as she baked my favorite dessert, apple strudel. I asked her all sorts of questions while she cooked, but mostly we talked about her family. Grandma Ruth was born in Shumsk, Poland (now Ukraine), in 1928. She, her mother, and her siblings were deported Grandma Ruth during World War II likes haroset to be a and left to survive little chunky, for five years in but some the vast steppes of prefer it to the Soviet Union have a smooth

when she was just 11. Only after returning to Europe, where she lived in displaced persons camps in Austria, did she begin to learn to cook. Her education continued when she and her family settled as refugees in Lynn, MA. The flavors of her home shtetl (or town) in Poland became central to the narrative she shared with me about her life before the war and our family’s heritage. These days, when I spend Passover apart from Grandma Ruth and my family, I make haroset in the wooden chopping bowl she gifted me. I taste as I go, adding honey and lemon juice only when my apples aren’t tart enough or the wine sweet enough. My version includes prunes, a common ingredient in Eastern European Jewish cooking, which I feel enhance the flavor and texture. Just as I stood beside Grandma Ruth, my niece and nephews now prepare the haroset with my mother. That’s the thing about family traditions: They evolve. However, my sisters and I still fight over who gets to take home leftover haroset, so not everything changes.
GRANDMA RUTH’S PASSOVER HAROSET How you prepare haroset can reveal your family origins. My Iraqi relatives use walnuts and date syrup to make it. Yemeni, Persian, and Greek Jews use dried dates and figs instead of fresh fruit. Whether or not you grew up eating haroset, feel free to make this recipe with ingredients that connect you to your heritage. START TO FINISH 20 min. 1¹∕2 cups diced tart apples (about 1 or 2 apples) ¹∕2 cup raw walnuts 4 prunes, pitted and quartered (optional) 1 tsp. ground cinnamon ¹∕4 cup sweet Concord wine (preferably Manischewitz) or sweet grape juice 1 Tbsp. honey or maple syrup (optional) 1 Tbsp. lemon juice (optional)
1. In a chopping bowl or food processor combine apples, walnuts, and prunes (if using). Hand-chop or pulse until coarsely ground. Transfer to a bowl. 2. Add cinnamon and wine (or grape juice). BLENDING HER SOUTHERN ROOTS AND SUNNY SO-CAL STYLE, ACTRESS VIRGINIA WILLIAMS FINDS HAPPINESS IN A COLORFULLY REIMAGINED MIDCENTURY MODERN GEM. 72
| April 2022
Clean white walls and crisp midcentury architecture set a neutral backdrop for Virginia Williams’ favorite colors. The upholstery on the dining chairs pulls the yellow from her and husband Bradford’s wedding china displayed in the cabinet. “Virginia loves color, she loves glamour, she loves shine,” says interior designer Seyie Putsure. “The house needed to be updated to feel hip, cool, and fresh, but they also wanted it to reflect who they are.”

Playful updates recast antique pieces in a modern light. Case in point: The vintage bergère chairs, which came with the house, are covered in a vibrant indoor-outdoor (aka kid-friendly) banana leaf fabric. The pattern is Putsure’s tribute to The Beverly Hills Hotel, a Hollywood Regency-style icon.

s
ome people keep their wedding china tucked away. Virginia Williams is not one of them. Her beloved Herend Queen Victoria dishes are used often and prominently displayed in a glass cabinet in the dining room. In fact, the pattern’s bright blues, pinks, and yellows are what inspired the palette throughout her Los Angeles home. “It feels like the perfect marriage of the South and Southern California,” says the Tennessee native. In 2013 when the actress and her talent manager husband, Bradford Bricken, purchased the 1960 modern ranch—originally designed by architect Perry Neuschatz of the famous Neutra Group—it was dark and dated. But the couple were looking for a project, not only to create a home that fit their style but also as a way to heal after suffering three miscarriages. With the help of friend and interior designer Seyie Putsure, they covered the wood paneling in white paint, which welcomes the rainbow of Virginia’s favorite hues. Putsure also layered in a few Hollywood Regency notes— mirrored, metallic, and lacquered finishes and crystal details—as a nod to the couple’s professions in the entertainment industry. Today, the house sports a punchy Palm Springs look that complements the midcentury architecture as well as the vibrancy of a young family that now includes two energetic boys (Ford, 6, and Beau, 4). “It’s bright and fun and sunny,” Virginia says. “Even when it’s a mess, it still feels happy.” April 2022 |

color school Love bold bursts of color? Interior designer Seyie Putsure (far left with Virginia) suggests ways to use them with certainty. 1
START WITH TWO COLORS Analogous colors (those next to each other on the color wheel) always work together. In this home Putsure went with blue and green. 2
BE CONSISTENT Build on the variations within a color family to add depth. Emerald, aquamarine, and kelly (all green hues) form a color thread that connects each room. “It’s important to have continuity so it all feels like part of the same home,” Putsure says. 3
ADD CONTRAST
GO GREEN A SMALL SPACE TAMES THE EFFECT OF A BIG, BRIGHT PATTERN.
Introduce accent colors for interest but stay within the same color value. Putsure used brighter jewel tones throughout (avoiding pastels) to keep the mood consistent and energetic.

Slim Aarons’ 1970 Poolside Glamour photograph echoes the kitchen’s vibrant palette. High-shine accents— the crystal chandelier and lacquered cabinetry— add a touch of glamour. Continuing the trad notes, Putsure says, “The Louis Ghost chairs open up the space and have the same French-inspired silhouette as the bergères in the living room.”

the same deep color can make a space feel bigger because the color itself makes the corners recede,” says interior designer Erin Gates. Jen Talbot, who designed this living room, agrees. “But you have to go all in and paint door and window frames, and choose window treatments that blend,” she says. Talbot likes a deep, cool gray, green, or navy. “Dark walls create mood but are not oppressive,” she says. “They’re rich and make you want to spend more time in the room.”

MYTH 2 TRIM SHOULD EITHER BE LEFT AS STAINED WOOD OR PAINTED WHITE. TRU T H “Colorful trim often helps a space feel more thought through
and immersive,” says designer Susana Simonpietri of Chango & Co. “For example, painting all trim to work with a wallpaper accent color rather than white. It’s also a great way to mix colors you happen to love and add whimsy to a space, as is the case with this room’s two tones of blue.”

Don’t think of painted trim as ruining the bones. It can celebrate a room’s architectural character, playing up details like molding by creating contrast.
With little or no natural light to soften it, a bright wall color can look jarring in a room. Instead, choose light colors tinted with white (versus ones toned down with gray, which can look shadowy in a dark room). Add multiple light sources to create vibrancy.

EVERY ROOM SHOULD BE A DIFFERENT COLOR.

Regardless of how light or dark the hues are, your existing wall color can affect how the new paint looks, so the final effect might not be true to the color you picked. “Think about painting a room dark green when the wall color was lavender. Essentially, the shade of green will be tainted by the lavender. We recommend two coats of primer and two coats of paint to achieve the true color.” JEAN LIU,

the bottom crease of the pie plate, working your way around so there are no gaps between the dough and the pie plate. Fold edge of dough underneath itself, gently pinching to seal dough. The edge of the dough should stand about 1/2 inch above the lip of the pie plate. Crimp and flute the edge of the dough if you like. Chill 10 to 15 minutes. 2. Meanwhile, in a large skillet heat 3 Tbsp. olive oil and the garlic over medium. When the garlic just begins to simmer in the oil (2 minutes), cook, stirring frequently and occasionally tilting the pan to submerge the garlic in oil, 90 seconds or until golden and fragrant. Add potatoes, making sure to separate slices as you stir them. Cook, stirring occasionally, 10 minutes or until potatoes are tender and lightly browned in places. (Reduce heat if the potatoes brown too quickly or begin to burn on the edges before cooking through.) Remove large pieces of the smashed garlic and stir in the peas. Season with 1 tsp. fine sea salt and cook, stirring occasionally, about 1 minute or until peas are warmed through. With a slotted spoon, transfer potato-pea mixture to a clean, folded kitchen towel or a couple of paper towels to absorb excess oil. 3. Cover chilled dough with a piece of parchment and fill with dry beans or pie weights. Bake 20 minutes or until edges are set and golden. Remove parchment and dry beans; bake 5 to 10 minutes more or until the dough dries out. 4. In a large bowl whisk together the eggs, cream, 3 tsp. of the chives, the dill weed, 1 tsp. of the lemon zest, 1/2 tsp. fine sea salt, and 1/4 tsp. freshly ground black pepper. Remove 1/4 cup of the peas from the potato mixture. Stir the potatoes and remaining peas into the egg mixture until combined. Pour mixture carefully into the hot crust and use tongs to spread out the potatoes. Top evenly with the goat cheese and remaining 1 tsp. chives. Place pinches of the remaining 1/2 tsp. lemon zest over the goat cheese. 5. Bake 25 minutes or until lightly golden brown and center is just set. Transfer to

OPZELURA cream is for use on the skin only. Do not use OPZELURA cream, in your eyes, mouth or vagina. OPZELURA may cause serious side effects, including: Serious Infections: OPZELURA cream contains ruxolitinib. Ruxolitinib belongs to a class of medicines called Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors. JAK inhibitors are medicines that affect your immune system. JAK inhibitors can lower the ability of your immune system to fight infections. Some people have had serious infections while taking JAK inhibitors by mouth, including tuberculosis (TB), and infections caused by bacteria, fungi, or viruses that can spread throughout the body. Some people have been hospitalized or died from these infections. Some people have had serious infections of their lungs while taking OPZELURA. Your healthcare provider should watch you closely for signs and symptoms of TB during treatment with OPZELURA. OPZELURA should not be used in people with an active, serious infection, including localized infections. You should not start using OPZELURA if you have any kind of infection unless your healthcare provider tells you it is okay. You may be at a higher risk of developing shingles (herpes zoster) while using OPZELURA. Increased risk of death from all causes, including sudden cardiac death, has happened in people taking JAK inhibitors by mouth. Cancer and immune system problems: OPZELURA may increase your risk of certain cancers by changing the way your immune system works. Some people have had lymphoma and other cancers while taking JAK inhibitors by mouth, especially if they are a current or past smoker. Some people have had skin cancers while taking OPZELURA. Your healthcare provider will regularly check your skin during your treatment with OPZELURA. There is an increased risk of major cardiovascular events such as heart attack, stroke or cardiac death in people with cardiovascular risk factors and who are current or past smokers while using JAK inhibitors to treat inflammatory conditions. Blood clots: Blood clots in the veins of your legs (deep vein thrombosis, DVT) or lungs (pulmonary embolism, PE) can happen in some people taking OPZELURA. This may be life-threatening. Low blood cell counts: OPZELURA may cause low platelet counts (thrombocytopenia), low red blood cell counts (anemia), and low white blood cell counts (neutropenia). If needed, your healthcare provider will do a blood test to check your blood cell counts during your treatment with OPZELURA and may stop your treatment if signs or symptoms of low blood cell counts happen. Cholesterol increases: Cholesterol increase has happened in people when ruxolitinib is taken by mouth. Tell your healthcare provider if you have high cholesterol or triglycerides. Before starting OPZELURA, tell your healthcare provider if you: • have an infection, are being treated for one, or have an infection that keeps coming back • have diabetes, chronic lung disease, HIV, or a weak immune system • have or had TB, or have been in close contact with someone with TB • have had shingles (herpes zoster) or hepatitis B or C • live, have lived in, or have traveled to certain parts of the country (such as the Ohio and Mississippi River valleys and the Southwest) where there is an increased chance for getting certain kinds of fungal infections. When the garlic just begins to simmer, cook and stir 90 seconds or until fragrant and golden in places. Add the leeks, ³∕4 tsp. fine sea salt, and ¹∕4 tsp. freshly ground black pepper. Cook, stirring, 5 to 7 minutes or until leeks are tender and golden. Add peas and mint; cook and stir 2 minutes or until peas are crisptender. Remove from heat; cool briefly. 2. In a medium bowl whisk together the ricotta, buttermilk, cream, Parmesan, ¹∕4 tsp. fine sea salt, and ¹∕4 tsp. freshly ground black pepper. 3. Oil two baking sheets. Lightly flour a rolling pin; roll out dough portion evenly to a 12-inch circle. Transfer dough to one of the baking sheets, stretching the dough as needed to maintain the diameter. Repeat with other disk of Flatbread Dough. 4. Spread half of the ricotta mixture over each dough round, leaving a ¹∕2-inch border around the edge. Evenly top each with half of the pea mixture, half of the mozzarella, and half of the pine nuts. Bake on separate oven racks 15 minutes or until the mozzarella is browned in places and crust is golden on the edges, swapping baking sheet positions halfway through. 5. Serve with Fresh Pea Vinaigrette and, if you like, top with additional mint. Serves 8. FRESH PEA VINAIGRETTE Bring a small saucepan of water to boiling. Add ²∕3 cup shelled fresh peas. Periodontitis goes beyond your mouth. Research shows gum disease patients have a 26% higher risk of type 2 diabetes and 18% higher odds of heart disease. One key habit (along with brushing and seeing a dentist twice a year): flossing once a day. Not a fan? Try a floss holder or picks that make it easier to reach back teeth.
A recent report ranked diets for healthy eating and weight loss. Two to note are the Flexitarian Diet—you eat vegetarian most of the time, adding nonmeat sources of protein, like beans. And DASH—a lowersodium diet focused on whole grains, produce, lean protein, and low-fat dairy.
More than half of Americans plan to take a getaway in 2022.
28% THAT’S HOW MUCH LESS LIKELY COFFEE AND TEA DRINKERS ARE TO DEVELOP DEMENTIA. Scientists found that the protective benefits (most likely from antioxidants that fend off inflammation) kicked in at two to three cups a day of coffee, tea, or a combo of the two. People who had four to six cups daily were nearly a third less likely to have a stroke or develop dementia.
April 7 is National Alcohol Screening Day to raise awareness of alcohol abuse and alcoholism. A lot of recent press has noted that people have been drinking more during the pandemic; reports show that excessive drinking (eight drinks a week for women, 15 for men, per the CDC) has spiked 21 percent since March 2020. If you’re wondering about your drinking habits, you can do a check at alcoholscreening.org or the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test: auditscreen.org. ■

Which vitamins and minerals are worth taking? There’s no one-size-fits-all answer, but here’s what experts say about getting the nutrients you need.
D
espite the dizzying array of supplements available, most of us don’t need to take many of them. But there are a few nutrients that Americans are commonly deficient in. Remember: “If you can’t meet your needs through food, supplements can help bridge the gap,” says Debbie Petitpain, RDN, a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Keep an eye on these five nutrients.
VITAMIN D
IRON
Why you need it For strong bones and immunity.
Why you need it To help red blood cells carry oxygen throughout your body.
Aim for 600 to 1,000 IU daily. Find it in Fortified dairy products, fish, and mushrooms. Take note It’s hard to get enough D from diet alone; you make it when you’re exposed to sunlight. There’s some debate among scientists as to how much we should be supplementing, so talk to your doctor first about this one, says Gregory Lopez, PharmD, editor in chief for examine .com, a database of nutrition and supplement research. Aim for 18 mg daily for women up to age 50; 8 mg age 51 and older. Find it in Red meat, salmon, poultry, dried beans, and ironfortified cereals. Take note You might need iron, especially if you have heavy periods or anemia (extreme fatigue, cold hands and feet). But have your levels checked before supplementing; too much iron can be toxic.
Take note It’s best to get potassium by eating lots of fruits and veggies; it’s easy to get too much with a supplement (some medications also affect potassium levels). Only supplement if your doctor prescribes it.
CALCIUM Why you need it For strong bones and healthy teeth.
POTASSIUM
Aim for 1,000 mg per day (1,200 mg for women 51 and older).
Why you need it For the health of your heart, kidneys, muscles, and nerves.
Find it in Fortified cereals, dairy, nondairy milks, orange juice, and leafy greens.
Aim for 2,600 mg per day.
Take note Try to get your calcium via food—recent studies haven’t found strong proof that calcium

supplements protect bones, and they may have risks. If you need a supplement, take smaller amounts (e.g., no more than one 500 mg pill at a time) for better absorption.
FIBER Why you need it To keep your digestive system running smoothly, reduce cholesterol, and help regulate blood sugar. Aim for About 28 g daily. Find it in Whole grains, beans, fruits, and vegetables. Take note Increase your fiber intake slowly to avoid bloating and constipation. Drink plenty of water with dietary fiber or supplements.

health nutrients for every age Your nutrient needs can change with age. Here’s a decade-bydecade glance at what to consider.
IN YOUR 30S AND 40S FOLIC ACID
doyou reallyneed amultivitamin? Some experts consider a multivitamin a good insurance policy in case you’re not eating a wellbalanced diet. Others think they’re not necessary. For the most part, a multivitamin will do no harm. Just be sure to look at the percentages on the label and choose one that has no more than 100 percent of each nutrient listed, Petitpain says. The potential for danger comes from overdoing certain nutrients, especially fat-soluble vitamins like A, D, E, and K, which can build up in your system. Also take a pass on the iron if you’re postmenopausal to avoid toxicity as well as uncomfortable GI side effects.

This B vitamin helps form new cells, and it’s crucial to take before becoming pregnant to prevent serious birth defects. Fortified breads and cereals have some folic acid, but the official
recommendation from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is for all women of childbearing age to take a 400 mcg supplement. OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS Found in
fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, and tuna, omega-3s support brain and heart health and help lower inflammation. Aim to eat fish twice a week. If you don’t eat fish, ask your doc about a supplement and dosage.
IN YOUR 50S VITAMIN B12
Starting in your 50s, you might not make enough of a certain stomach protein that helps absorb B12. Certain medications, including metformin for diabetes and ones for acid reflux, also interfere with B12 absorption. Most adults over 50 should consider taking a supplement containing 100–400 mcg per day to protect the nervous system and keep energy levels up.
IN YOUR 60S AND BEYOND PROTEIN
You probably don’t need a supplement, but be aware protein requirements for maintaining muscle mass and overall strength
increase with age. Aim to eat some protein at every meal, which might mean adding Greek yogurt or an egg to breakfast or as a snack. EYE-PROTECTIVE VITAMINS AND MINERALS If you’ve
been diagnosed with age-related macular degeneration (AMD)— the most common cause of blindness— ask your doctor if you’d benefit from taking a supplement called AREDS (a combo of vitamins C and E, beta-carotene, copper, and zinc) or AREDS2 (adds lutein and zeaxanthin instead of betacarotene). Both have been clinically shown to delay or prevent blindness in people with moderate to severe AMD.
AS K PHARMAC I STS O R DOC S TO RECO M M E N D A S U PPLE M E NT B R AN D TH EY TRU ST.
WHATABOUTVEGETARIANS?
Not eating meat doesn’t necessarily mean you need a supplement—assuming you eat eggs and dairy. If you don’t, you likely need a B12 supplement, says Lopez, who notes that some vegetarians also fall short on calcium, iron, and zinc. If you don’t eat fish, consider an algae-base omega-3 supplement, Petitpain adds. Bottom line: If you’re vegetarian or vegan, review your eating habits with a supplement-savvy doctor and a nutritionist. ■
