New Year, New You. The phrase gets bandied about every January, as a prompt to take stock of where we’re at and endeavour to make resolutions that count in the coming months. Often that leads to pressure to overhaul our whole life and make sweeping changes that, let’s face it, are unsustainable. “I’ll lose weight, save more, eat better, swear less….” Does that sound familiar? It does to us! But it’s not a bad thing to strive for something. The trick is to set goals that will empower instead of discourage. Experts advise using a SMART method; this PHDQV VHWWLQJ JRDOV WKDW DUH 6SHFL¿F 0HDVXUHDEOH Attainable, Relevant and Timed. So, instead of saying “I’ll lose weight,” give your plan more focus. Say, “I’ll ORVH ¿YH SRXQGV E\ )HEUXDU\ E\ KDYLQJ D IUXLW smoothie for breakfast instead of a cheese croissant.” It’s a simplistic example, but you get the idea. Other tips? Write down your goal, make a plan for achieving it and then tell someone so you are accountable. By starting small, chances are better you’ll meet your target, and be encouraged to do more. Not all objectives need to be completely life-changing. Opting to eat one vegan meal per week will probably

be more successful than attempting to go meatless cold turkey, if you will. HISTORY MONTH For more than 400 years, Canadians of African and Caribbean descent have contributed, and continue to contribute, to Canada’s culture and history. That’s why each February we celebrate Black History Month! It’s an opportunity to share, honour and appreciate the impact of Black heritage and culture in Canada. In 1979, the efforts of individuals and organizations such as the Ontario Black History Society made Toronto the first Canadian municipality to recognize Black History Month. February was officially named Black History Month across Canada in 1995, thanks to the efforts of the Honourable Jean Augustine, who was solely responsible for introducing the motion to the House of Commons. She is also the first African-Canadian woman elected to Parliament, as well as the first appointed to the federal cabinet. Black History Month is about commemorating the achievements of Black Canadians like Augustine, and continually working toward a more diverse and inclusive Canada.

FUN FACT We often don various articles of clothing and accessories to communicate something about ourselves without the fuss of talking... and we have done so for millennia. Recently recovered shell beads from southwestern Morocco are thought to be the earliest evidence of a widespread form of nonverbal communication among early Homo sapiens. The beads date from 142,000 to 150,000 years ago, and offer clues about the evolution of human cognition and social relations. The archaeologists noted evidence of human modification on the beads, such as chipping and polishing from stone tools, and some were coloured red with ochre. The shells also show traces of wear and tear from being suspended. It’s thought that they were used as symbolic objects and possibly displayed as a way for people to identify each other. These types of symbolic shells have been found across North Africa and the Levant, suggesting a level of cultural continuity among early human populations. Next time you’re deciding how to adorn yourself, remember that human beings have been thinking similar thoughts for hundreds of thousands of years!

pretzels GIANT PRETZELS MAKES 8 PRETZELS HANDS-ON TIME 50 MINUTES TOTAL TIME 2 1/2 HOURS

1 1/2 cups lukewarm water (100°F), divided 1 tbsp granulated sugar 1 8 g pkg active dry yeast (about 2 1/4 tsp) 1 tbsp melted unsalted butter or vegetable oil 3 to 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, divided 1 tsp salt 1/2 cup baking soda 1 egg 1 tbsp 2% milk or water coarse sea salt (optional) Honey Mustard Sauce (optional) Cheese Sauce (optional) In large bowl, combine 1/4 cup of the lukewarm water and the sugar until sugar is dissolved. Sprinkle with yeast. Let stand until foamy, about 10 minutes. In same bowl, mix in remaining lukewarm ZDWHU DQG WKH EXWWHU $GG FXSV RI WKH ÀRXU and the salt. Using wooden spoon, mix until dough is smooth (it will be sticky). Transfer to greased bowl, turning to grease all over. Cover bowl with plastic wrap and let dough rise in warm, draft-free place until doubled in size, 30 minutes to 1 hour. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper. Punch down dough. Divide into SLHFHV 2Q OLJKWO\ ÀRXUHG ZRUN VXUIDFH UROO each piece into 20-inch rope. Curve each rope to create horseshoe shape; cross ends over each other twice. Bring ends up to create pretzel shape; press gently to seal. Place pretzel on prepared baking sheet. Repeat with remaining dough to make 8 pretzels in total. Stir baking soda into large saucepan of boiling water. Gently lower pretzels into water,

one or two at a time; cook for 30 seconds. Using skimmer or large spatula, remove pretzels from water and return to baking sheets, placing 2 inches apart. Preheat oven to 400°F. In small bowl, combine egg and milk. Brush tops of pretzels with egg mixture. Sprinkle with coarse salt (if using). Bake on top and bottom thirds of oven, switching and rotating baking sheets halfway through baking time, until pretzels are golden brown, 20 to 25 minutes. Let cool on baking sheets on wire racks for 10 minutes. Serve warm with Honey-Mustard Sauce or Cheese Sauce, if desired. (Make-ahead: Can be stored in airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days or frozen for up to 1 month.) PER PRETZEL about 215 cal, 6 g pro, 3 g total fat (1 g sat. fat), 41 g carb (2 g dietary fibre, 2 g sugar), 25 mg chol, 300 mg sodium, 2.5 mg iron.

Honey-Mustard Sauce In bowl, whisk together 1/4 cup light mayonnaise or 2% plain Greek yogurt, 2 tbsp each Dijon and grainy mustard, 2 tbsp liquid honey, and 1 tbsp lemon juice. (Make-ahead: Can be covered and refrigerated for up to 3 days.) Makes about 2/3 cup. PER SERVING (1 TBSP) about 30 cal, 0 g pro, 2 g total fat (0 g sat. fat), 4 g carb (0 g dietary fibre, 3 g sugar), 1 mg chol, 180 mg sodium, 0 mg iron.

Cheese Sauce In saucepan, melt 2 tbsp salted butter over medium heat. Add 2 tbsp allSXUSRVH ÀRXU FRRN ZKLVNLQJ FRQVWDQWO\ DERXW 1 minute. Gradually pour in 1 cup 2% milk, whisking constantly until smooth. Add 1/4 tsp each salt and pepper, and pinch of cayenne pepper. Cook, whisking constantly, until sauce KDV WKLFNHQHG WR PLQXWHV 5HPRYH SDQ from heat. Stir in 1 cup shredded aged orange Cheddar cheese until melted. Serve lukewarm. (Make-ahead: Can be stored in airtight container and refrigerated for up to 5 days. Reheat before serving.) Makes about 1 1/3 cups. PER SERVING (1 TBSP) about 40 cal, 2 g pro, 3 g total fat (2 g sat. fat), 1 g carb (0 g dietary fibre, 1 g sugar), 10 mg chol, 75 mg sodium, 0 mg iron.

In small bowl, combine 3 tbsp toasted sesame seeds, 2 tbsp each poppy seeds and onion powder, 1 tbsp each garlic powder and caraway seeds, and 1 1/2 tsp fleur de sel. Sprinkle egg-brushed pretzels with seasoning and bake as directed.

PARMESAN & ROSEMARY PRETZELS Sprinkle eggbrushed pretzels with 3 tbsp grated Parmesan cheese and 1 tbsp chopped fresh rosemary. Bake as directed.

JALAPEÑOCHEDDAR PRETZELS Mix 2 seeded and finely chopped fresh jalapeño peppers into dough right before forming into rope; continue with recipe. Sprinkle eggbrushed pretzels with 1 cup shredded orange Cheddar cheese and bake as directed.

CINNAMON PRETZELS In small bowl, combine 1/2 cup granulated sugar and 2 tsp cinnamon. After brushing pretzels with egg mixture, omit sprinkling of coarse salt. When pretzels are baked, brush with 1/4 cup melted unsalted butter, then sprinkle with cinnamon-sugar.

Gagnon says, “We want our ingredients to be grown and harvested in a responsible and sustainable manner, and this includes the farmers, the land used, the farming practices, the local communities and many other aspects of production.”

The packaging of beauty products is one of the biggest ways the beauty industry pollutes the planet. “Over 120 billion packages of beauty products are made each year and much of it ends up in landfills,” says Shartun. Hence the importance of choosing cosmetics with recyclable packaging. “We are also seeing an increase in the popularity of refillable packaging,” she continues. “Ecocert is an interesting credential because it covers so many aspects, from ingredients to human health,” says Shartun. She also names Leaping Bunny, which assures buyers that a product is cruelty-free. However, obtaining these certifications can be expensive and time consuming, especially for smaller brands, Shartun adds, many of which have already incorporated sustainable practices and are committed to being responsible. So just because a brand does not hold a particular certification does not mean that it should be avoided. In this case, most brands list their practices on their websites.

11 CHOOSE BRANDS THAT INVEST IN ECOLOGICAL AND ETHICAL PRACTICES While some smaller brands are creating their products in smaller quantities (or even on demand), larger ones are revising their factory processes. For example, “Garnier saved 3,670 tonnes of virgin plastic in 2019 by using recycled plastic for its packaging,” says Gagnon. The brand has also implemented initiatives to reduce its water consumption and carbon dioxide emissions, as well as a new partnership with National Geographic Storytellers to educate consumers.

REUSE AND RECYCLE OUR PRODUCT PACKAGING

Some boxes or glass jars are great for storing small items like jewellery. For other packaging, take the time to rinse it well and remove the pump if necessary, as this part is often not recyclable. Some brands or retailers also offer recycling programs; for example, The Detox Market has partnered with TerraCycle, a social enterprise specializing in recycling, making it much easier for consumers to recycle their empty jars. Recycling practices can differ from region to region, so make an effort to learn about what materials are recyclable in your municipality.

Puffy eyes are caused by decreased blood circulation and poor lymphatic drainage. A diet high in salt can also cause water retention, while stress and lack of sleep exacerbate the situation.

Caused by hyperpigmentation or slow-moving microcirculation of the blood in the eye area, dark circles may appear darker after a late night.

Not getting enough sleep or eating an unbalanced diet could result in a less than radiant complexion when you wake up.

Focus on using a light-textured eye treatment with ingredients like caffeine and vitamin C that will help stimulate blood circulation and brighten the area. Apply with gentle pressure, starting on the lower eyelid and moving from the inner corner of the eye to the outer corner. Do the same on the upper eyelid. To neutralize dark circles that are bluish, use a peach or orange concealer. Next, apply a thin layer of highlighting concealer, creating an inverted triangle shape under the eye, then gently pat the product onto skin with your ring finger.

Do some jumping jacks or go on a brisk walk for a few minutes to oxygenate your skin (and your body). A scrub or an exfoliating mask will dislodge dead cells and make your complexion more radiant. Moisturize your skin with a cream or lotion that contains a hydrating ingredient such as hyaluronic acid. Apply a light layer of blush to revive skin tone and a touch of highlighter on the top of your cheekbones to reflect the light.

Wrap an ice cube in a tissue and gently apply it around the eye area to boost circulation and help deflate tissue. Another option: Apply spoons or tea bags cooled in the refrigerator under your eyes for a few minutes. Dab on an eye contour treatment containing caffeine or Ginkgo biloba, ingredients with energizing and draining properties. It’s even better if the treatment has a ball or a metal or ceramic tip that provides a massaging effect! Hydrogel patches are also a great option for minimizing puffiness—make sure you have a pair or two on hand (or in the fridge).

In simple terms, essences are primers for the skin. Vitamin D is essential for the functioning of a healthy body. It controls blood calcium concentration, which keeps your heart beating and blood pressure levels normal. Lower levels of vitamin D appear to be linked to some cancers, such as colon, prostate, breast, bladder, lung, pancreatic, skin and ovarian cancers, as well as lymphoma and leukemia. Lower levels are also associated with heart disease, as well as insulin resistance, which can lead to type 2 diabetes and speed its progression. Low vitamin D is also linked to lower levels of testosterone in men, which means it plays a role in fertility. Because of its role in helping to maintain a diverse gut microbiome, vitamin D is also connected to gut health and diseases, like irritable bowel disease. Inadequate vitamin D levels are also correlated with mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, autism, Alzhiemer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. But maybe the most surprising role vitamin D plays in the body is in your immune V\VWHP²\RXU ERG\¶V ¿UVW OLQH RI GHIHQVH against infection and disease. Immune cells, such as B cells, T cells and antigen-presenting cells, all have vitamin D receptors, and when vitamin D binds to these receptors, the immune cells convert it into its biologically active form, calcitriol. Contrary to what you might think, oranges aren’t named for their colour. “Orange” actually comes from naranga, the Sanskrit word for orange tree. Originating in Southeast Asia, orange trees now thrive in warm climates around the world, including North Africa, Portugal, Spain and the United States. Juicy, sweet and almost seedless, navel oranges are the most widely consumed variety in Canada. The thick skin is easy to peel and its zest is super fragrant. Slightly sweeter, the Cara Cara variety has a lovely pinkish hue to its flesh. Combining these two shades on the plate adds a pop of colour to winter dishes.
