“There are two types of skin sensitivity: genetic, meaning you’re born with it; and sensitized skin, which refers to a temporary state caused by exposure to either internal or external factors,” says Jennifer Ahartz of the International Dermal Institute in California. In other words, it’s tough to pinpoint what causes it. Why salt baths?

We’re taught to avoid hot water like the plague. Why? It dries out the skin. But when it comes to detoxifying salt baths, having the water hot is key for making you perspire. “Taking a bath in the hottest water you can tolerate will allow your body to sweat and open your pores,” says Kaia Naturals founder Mary Futher. “While pores are open, you’re also getting the benefits of the active ingredients in the salts.” Epsom salts restore mineral density, but added ingredients such as turmeric, lavender oil and seaweed offer an extra healthful kick. March should be called the Grumpy Month. Most of us are cranky when the winter weather insists on sticking around. Sure, the days are getting longer, but the mercury stays stubbornly stuck subzero. Being the cantankerous Canadians we are at this time of year, we want to plow anyone who tells us to “look on the bright side.” But at the risk of having you all utter a collectively dismissive groan, I’m one of those Susie Sunshine sorts prevailing upon you to see the glass as half full. March isn’t the only month in which we tend to drift toward the dark side; many of us do it year-round. Scientists even have a name for it: negativity bias. As psychologist Rick Hanson describes in his book Buddha’s Brain: The Practical Neuroscience of Happiness, Love & Wisdom, “Your brain is like Velcro for negative experiences and like TeÀon for positive ones.” It may have been that, for our ancestors, this programming glitch wasn’t a glitch at all; being drawn to the negative may have served some evolutionary purpose, keeping our species safe from the threat of the woolly mammoth, plague or starvation. But these days, a great threat also comes from stress, anxiety and depression. We have to reprogram ourselves for a sunnier disposition. Hey, look, March was named after the Roman god of war, Mars, so how about we choose to start ¿ghting the good ¿ght—the one for mental health? OK, you say, but how? I’m glad you asked. I’ve mapped out three simple steps you can take to shift the balance in your brain so your awareness is weighted toward wellness. But none of these steps is going to work if you don’t embrace one critical, foundational notion: What you think is entirely up to you. Thoughts are made up by you. In my world, we call them “constructs,” a term I love because the implication is we actively construct them. Got it? All right, let’s proceed. 40 | CANADIAN LIVING MARCH 2018

Most of the time, we’re largely unaware of our thought patterns. We don’t question these unconscious creations. I suggest you start questioning them. When you find your attention drifting to the negative, notice it. You don’t need to be hard on yourself; just compassionately and curiously observe the trend: “Oh, look, I’m doing it again.”

A downside to our preoccupation with potential threats is we’re missing the here and now when we should be concentrating on being in the present. So, when you find your attention mired in, say, imagining the mess waiting in the kitchen because your darn kids never clean up after themselves, come on back. Right here, right now, there’s a moment free from that stress. Grab it.

What we attend to is a choice. Why not choose to focus on a few of the things that are really great? Even the small things. Especially the small things.

Early RRSP Withdrawals— Think Twice It sounds tempting, but you should never, ever borrow from your RRSPs before retirement. Here’s why. TEXT STACY YANCHUK OLEKSY

We deposit funds into our registered retirement savings plans (RRSPs) to ensure security and comfort when we stop working. But sometimes, we’re tempted to withdraw some of it early. Whether it’s for a personal indulgence (part of a down payment on a vacation property, a new car) or an unforeseen ¿nancial crisis (bad investments, a lost job), the money seems like it’s just a phone call away to deal with whatever’s at hand. It all appears so enticingly simple. But there are some pretty severe consequences to withdrawing from RRSPs before you retire (for anything other than education or a ¿rst home, which is not penalized). Here’s what you should know.

First and foremost, you’ll get taxed—twice. Depending on how much you withdraw from your RRSP, up to percent will be held back. Then, come tax time, you’ll have to add the amount withdrawn to your total taxable income, which might put you into a higher bracket requiring you to pay more income tax. You’ll also lose out on interest. Retirement savings currently yield about ¿ve to eight percent interest annually, which adds up It could be the dĭerence that enables you to enjoy the retirement lifestyle you want. Additionally, if you’ve maxed out your contributions, you won’t be able to put the money back into your RRSP when you’re feeling ¿nancially stronger. That means your RRSP ceiling will be that much lower when you retire. In short, you should never withdraw from your RRSPs early, but if you’ve already done so and are wondering what your next step is, speak with your ¿nancial planner about maximizing current investments as well as future contributions. You may also wish to speak with a nonpro¿t credit counsellor about creating an overall spending plan in order to put additional funds toward retirement. All in all, you should save as much as possible to enjoy the golden years you always envisioned. Your future self will thank you.

Meet the new wave of nuclear families: couples raising kids in relationships that aren’t de¿ned by romantic love. Here’s how they come together and what makes them work. TEXT SARAH TRELEAVEN

Diapers before date nights, bottles of milk before bottles of wine, timeouts before time alone—in many ways, contemporary parenting and its often-overwhelming demands can seem incompatible with the maintenance of romantic love, especially when the necessity of changing a seemingly endless number of nappies eclipses the commitment to keepingthe-magic-alive date nights. But there’s a new parenting trend on the horizon that takes the romance out of raising kids altogether: elective co-parenting. A platonic partnership is at the heart of these newfangled families, in which new and old friends team up to provide what’s best for their kids. The love, commitment and wanting the best for your babies are all there; it’s just the formation that’s changed. Because, let’s face it, that idealized script involving romance, a wedding and the birth of children followed by a lifetime of happiness isn’t infallible, and our brave new world is adapting. Studies on this subject are in their own infancy, but according to one from England’s Centre for Family Research at the University of Cambridge, there’s been a rise in co-parenting over the past several years—particularly among single heterosexual women, whose average age at the time they sought out these arrangements was 35. Tabitha Freeman, coauthor of the Cambridge study and a senior research associate at the centre, acknowledges there has been very little scrutiny on the topic. But she believes that, as with many parenting situations, a positive relationship—though not necessarily a romantic one—between

co-parents is probably the linchpin to raising well-adjusted children. “Although there’s currently no evidence concerning the psychological well-being of children raised by elective co-parents, the nature of the relationship that develops between the parents is likely to be key,” says Freeman. A warm and supportive relationship can come in many forms—and is what elective co-parents are trying to achieve. They’re men and women, straight and gay, cis- and transgender who simply never met the right romantic partner but want to raise a child. And while some co-parenting unions are struck among old friends or new acquaintances, others have been facilitated between like-minded strangers by a growing number of parenting and matchmaking services, including websites such as coparents.com, modamily.com and familybydesign.com. Modamily founder Ivan Fatovic says the site has acquired 15,000 members—twothirds of whom are women—since launching in 2012. “It works a lot like an online dating site, where you message and meet people on your own, but we also have a personal matchmaking service for those who want a little more guidance,” says Fatovic. “The soughtafter co-parenting criteria varies from person to person—users specify everything from height to hair colour—but more than anything else, they’re looking for someone who complements their value system.” From meeting online, at work or by chance, these three sets of co-parents are helping forge a new de¿nition of family life that’s less conventional, but no less loving.

LYNDA COLLINS AND Natasha Bakht, colleagues in the faculty of law at the University of Ottawa, have been friends for 11 years. Still single but keen to start a family, Natasha decided in her mid-30s to ¿nd a sperm donor and become a single mother. Her good friend Lynda was enthusiastic and supportive: “I immediately asked if she needed a birthing coach.” The ¿rst person to hold her friend’s son, Elaan, Lynda was overcome by maternal feelings. “I loved him as my own right from the start,” she says, adding that she visited daily. The good friend’s supportive role grew when, at six months old, Elaan began having seizures and wasn’t holding his head up. At two years old, he was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, including spastic quadriplegia and cortical visual impairment, which means he requires help with mobility and all activities of daily living. Lynda leaped into action, accompanying Natasha and the baby to doctor’s appoint-

ments and discussing treatment options. As Elaan’s needs grew—he uses a wheeled walker and is tube-fed—so did Lynda’s support, and she moved into the condo unit above Natasha’s to help with daily care. Natasha typically handles the morning before-school routine, while Lynda comes over in the evenings to organize Elaan’s medications and get him ready for bed. Many nights, Lynda plays guitar while she and Natasha sing for Elaan. He loves it and indicates with a smile which songs he wants. On weekends, the three do most activities—eating meals, running errands or enjoying the city—together. “We were co-parenting without calling it that,” says Natasha. “So, when Lynda asked me if she could adopt Elaan, it didn’t take me long to decide.” The problem was Lynda didn’t meet the technical de¿nition of “partner” eligible for step-parent adoption under Canadian law—a term typically reserved for a romantic partner who wants to adopt the other person’s child. It took 10 months and the help of a lawyer, but in November 2015, Natasha and Lynda won a landmark ruling to become legal co-parents—a ¿rst for platonic friends in Canada. Elaan’s birth certi¿cate, now including both parents’ names, arrived in January 201 , and “Auntie Lyndy” has become “Lyndy Mummy.”

THOUGH THE TERM “chemistry” often describes a romantic spark, Tatijana Busic, an organizational consultant, was looking for a dĭerent kind of chemistry altogether (no, not the science one). Single but ready to give her daughter, Isadora (from a previous marriage), a sibling and raise another child, she sought a match made in heaven with a platonic parental partner she had yet to meet. A friend read a newspaper article about the co-parenting matchmaking site Modamily and suggested it to Tatijana. She found it very similar to online dating— crafting a pro¿le, then browsing the extensive options. She had interacted with only two men when she and Brendan Schulz connected. They immediately began peppering each other with practical questions about parenting, religion, education and values— and found they were on the same page. Over a yearlong period, Tatijana and Brendan—an unattached gay man who also wanted a parental partner—“courted” each other, ¿rst meeting for cŏee, then dinners,


then arranging visits with family, including Tatijana’s daughter. “One night at dinner, after these months of discussions, Brendan just said, ‘Do you want to do this?’ ” says Tatijana. Milo, Brendan and Tatijana’s biological child, was carried by Tatijana and born in June 2016. Eager to be included in as many newborn moments as possible, Brendan moved in during the ¿rst two postnatal months. “For me, it was really important that we be equal partners in raising our child,” says the executive director of student success at York University in Toronto. “I didn’t want to be a ‘special uncle’—I wanted to be his dad.” The pair had already agreed upon a 14-day schedule that splits custody 50-50 (they live just ¿ve kilometres from each other) and they developed an agreement of accountability that outlines everything from ¿nances to medical care to dating to recreational activities. The tight bond between Mom and Dad has been a very happy bonus. “When I pictured a co-parenting relationship in my head, it was more practical,” says Brendan. “But the sense of family is stronger than I ever imagined. We share all of life’s joys, successes and challenges.” For her part, Tatijana has been happy to sever parenting from the expectations of romantic love. “Brendan is my really good friend and my co-parent. He’s family and there’s lots of love between us, but he doesn’t have to be everything else,” she says. “We’re a family that happens to live in two houses. And when we tell Milo’s story, we tell the truth: He was born from love.”

IN THE SPRING OF 2016, Rachel Kirkpatrick and Joel McCarthy won a $50,000 grant from Telus’s Storyhive project to develop a web series, Inconceivable, with an outlandish premise: Two friends— an out lesbian and a straight man—have a six-month open relationship that results in a pregnancy and decide to keep the baby. The twist? The story is true, based on Rachel and Joel’s real-life road to parenthood. “Once, when Joel and I had sex, the condom broke,” says Rachel, a henna and visual artist in White Rock, B.C. Faced with a decision, they made a list of pros and cons—for example, starting a family while still young and energetic versus ¿nancial concerns—before deciding to have the baby and raise him together. The more they talked about it, the more excited they became about being parents, even though they were jumping into uncharted territory. “We didn’t have any models for how to do this,” says Joel, a ¿lmmaker and teacher. Despite their unconventional circumstances, the pair see themselves as fairly typical millennials: Both are lukewarm about the idea of lifelong monogamy, both value creativity and their ¿nances have been shaky at times. When their son, Bowie (his name commemorates the fact that Rachel found out she was pregnant the day after David Bowie died), was born in September 2016, the family began living in a Burnaby, B.C., home with two other friends. There continue to be changes in their situation, such as new jobs, and Rachel is dividing her time between her father’s home in White Rock and the home she shares with Joel. “We’re still learning how to communicate clearly. That’s been a big learning curve,” says Rachel, citing scheduling di̇culties and learning to ask each other for help. “We face a lot of the same issues that come up in conventional parenting, including conÀicts and annoyances.” Joel agrees. “We’re still ¿guring out what works and what doesn’t,” he says. That may, he acknowledges, be more complicated in the future if either he or Rachel ¿nds a long-term partner. “My ideal situation would be a duplex, so Bowie could just come and go,” says Rachel. “But whether or not that happens, we’ll always be partners in parenting.”

The answers to the mystery lie in alternating chapters to Janie’s, narrated by the titular bride, “Annabelle.” I loved this book’s cryptic atmosphere of Rebecca, and although it’s clear from the start that Bay and Annabelle are doomed, I was more than satis¿ed with Janie’s budding romance. The Lost Girls of Camp Forevermore FICTION (HARPERCOLLINS) BY KIM FU, $23.

When ¿ve girls head with their camp counsellor on an overnight camping trip, there’s little to suggest an ominous adventure and a tragedy—but the trip has long-lasting ĕects on the girls. Told in chapters that toggle between the future and the days of the trip, and relayed from the perspective of each individual girl, the book takes its time answering the “What happened?” question. I loved it for its portrayal of each of the girls—at once strong and vulnerable, only 10-ish years old but needing to be wiser in a crisis—and for showing that a single incident can colour your entire life. —AD

That Time I Loved You FICTION (HARPERCOLLINS) BY CARRIANNE LEUNG, $23.

Not all is what it seems beyond the well-manicured lawns and cookie-cutter homes of a burgeoning Canadian suburb in the 1970s where everyone is connected to one another (and to a series of tragic suicides)—race, class and gender collide there. Carrianne Leung’s second work of ¿ction feels almost like a collection of short stories, as each chapter spotlights a resident: There’s a newlywed with an infatuation for the couple next door, a kleptomaniac housewife and a grandmother with a sweet tooth. Every portrait is eloquent and lingers in your mind. —AE


The grip-lit trend—books of psychological suspense with flawed female leads, written mostly by women— is said to have started with Gone Girl, followed by other hits like The Girl on the Train. But is the idea really so new? Women have been writing such thrillers for decades; our favourite authors include Ethel Lina White, Mabel Seeley, P.D. James and the incomparable Minette Walters. In Heike Lerner’s seemingly perfect world—she’s living in a summer home at the lake with her solicitous husband and young son—an undercurrent of foreboding tells us that something wicked this way comes. Is it the content of the daily “tonics” her husband serves her? Maybe it has to do with the derelict cabin in the woods nearby. Or perhaps it concerns the strange little girl who seems to come out of nowhere and disappear just as mysteriously. This Canadian author’s sophomore novel, the latest in the grip-lit genre, is a fast-paced thrill ride with an intriguing premise and twists and turns that will keep you guessing until the end. —SM

What’s both startling and wonderful about these short stories isn’t necessarily their subject matter, which ranges from space travel to falconry to the guillotine. It’s how author Erin Frances Fisher gets you interested in the details of a topic that you never thought you’d be into (I have yet to crack a book on falconry). That skill, combined with Fisher’s thoughtful yet unÀinching look at the characters she creates, culminates in an anthology that’s anything but warm and fuzzy; instead, the stories ŏer honest and stripped-down snapshots of the human condition. In just three words: I loved it. —AD

There’s something about novels set in Jazz Age New York City that immediately draws me in, and Bachelor Girl is reminiscent of my favourites, which include The Great Gatsby and Rules of Civility. This ¿ctional tale is based on the true story of millionaire (and Yankees owner) Jacob Ruppert’s mysterious bequest to unknown, unemployed young actor Helen Winthrope. Through the alternating perspectives of Helen and Ruppert’s personal secretary, Albert Kramer, the narrative reveals both well-kept secrets and the development of a powerful friendship, as well as the reason behind Helen’s unexpected inheritance. —AE

OUR STAFF REVIEWERS Alexandra Donaldson loves reading literary fiction, essay collections, dark humour, Canadian authors and magical realism. This, and the fact that she’s one of our resident fashion editors, makes her the closest thing we have to Belle from Beauty and the Beast. Amanda Etty has an affinity for nail-biting thrillers and smart, funny books written by smart, funny women. She’s always on the hunt for her next favourite novel, although she’s currently working her way through a stack of parenting books (toddlers, right?). Suzanne Moutis almost always has her nose in a book, be it Golden Age mystery, Second World War history or Hollywood tell-all. She unapologetically loves Regency romances and young adult fiction but flatly refuses to read anything that will make her cry.

When should I see a doctor about my headaches? How many a month is normal?

Dr. Lay says “While it’s common to experience a headache due to a cold, following a head bump or from too much alcohol, if you have a headache more than twice a month, you should consult your doctor for a proper diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Most likely, someone with recurrent headaches is experiencing tension or migraine headaches, with the latter typically being more disabling. An episodic migraine headache is one that comes and goes less than 14 days per month; migraine headaches that happen more than 15 days per month are called chronic migraines. Your doctor can choose from many effective migraine therapies available, including both acute—to stop the attack—and preventive medications.”

What’s the difference between eczema and psoriasis? How are they treated?

Dr. Beach says “Eczema and psoriasis are inflammatory skin diseases that appear as itchy, red, scaly rashes. Eczema is generally more common and can affect as much as 20 percent of the population. It’s particularly aggravated when skin is exposed to irritants like extreme weather, fragrances or plant-based cosmetics. Babies and toddlers can get eczema that they often outgrow by their preteens. Psoriasis affects two to four percent of the North American population, with spikes during the 20s or late 40s; it can appear anywhere on the body but tends to develop on knees, elbows, the scalp and genitals. Psoriasis occurs when part of your immune system is overactive, causing healthy skin cells to multiply in excess and accumulate on the skin. There’s no cure for either condition, but both can be treated with oral medications, scheduled injections, creams containing corticosteroids or phototherapy, a form of medically monitored light therapy.”

What does having a heart attack feel like for a woman?

Price says “In general, most people experience an intense, crushing retrosternal—behind the breastbone—pain that can feel like an elephant on your chest. This pain can be accompanied by nausea or vomiting, sweating, lightheadedness, dizziness or fainting. Women are more likely to describe chest discomfort or pressure. In addition, women, more than men, may also mention having pain or discomfort in their neck, jaw, shoulders, back, one or both arms or some upper abdominal discomfort. And women might also complain about extreme fatigue or shortness of breath. While heart-attack symptoms typically occur with exertion, women are more likely to experience symptoms at night, at rest or when they’re under stress.”

When writer Kathleen Dore started graduate school at age 51 to work on adolescent mental health, she was following her heart. Little did she know, her heart had lessons of its own to teach.

On June 1, 2017,

a day after the approval of my research proposal, I had a heart attack. I’d noticed no warning signs and didn’t have risk factors: no high blood pressure; no high cholesterol; no diabetes; not overweight; never smoked; and no immediate family with cardiovascular disease so young. I had been really tired in May (which I now know can be a warning sign), but I chalked it up to a busy April. I ate healthily and had been doing cardio exercises a few times a week for 15 years. In fact, I was booked to do the Heart & Stroke’s

Ride for Heart in Toronto a few days later—I’d done the 50-kilometre bike ride the year before and found it easy. But on June 1, while gently warming up on the elliptical at the gym, a sudden pain spread across my chest underneath my breasts, like a rope being pulled tight. It was worse than the worst muscle spasm I’d ever had, and it wouldn’t stop. So I stopped (that was smart). I looked for help (smart again). A friend happened to walk up; he wanted to call 911. “Let’s wait—it might pass,” I said (not very smart). He persisted, naming CANADIAN LIVING MARCH 2018 | 67

other symptoms: pain in my arm? No. A cold sweat? Yes. “Call 911,” he told the stă. In an ambulance, a paramedic ran an electrocardiogram (ECG) and told me I was having an “event”—he didn’t mean a garden party. He called the nearest hospital with a cardiac unit and sent them my data, gave me two chewable Aspirin and told his partner to drive. At the hospital, I made small talk with the paramedics and nurses who stayed beside me. “Isn’t it ironic that I’m supposed to do the Ride for Heart in a couple of days?” One of the paramedics said, “Don’t worry, you’ll be doing it next year.” It was then that something shifted. I wanted to believe her—but I didn’t. Looking back, I realize that doubt had arrived. And once doubt got in, the door was wide open to fear. This is a story about living with fear and heart disease, but more than that, this is a story about living with a heart that wants to hope.

y y y y y At the hospital, things happened fast. A doctor came in and explained the procedure he’d do: an angioplasty with stent. He’d make an incision in my wrist and, while viewing live X-ray images, guide a catheter 68 | CANADIAN LIVING MARCH 2018

through the arterial system to the heart. Then, a wire would be threaded through the catheter and across the blockage. A thin, expandable balloon would be passed to the blockage, then inÀated. The balloon would push plaque aside and stretch the artery open. Finally, a stent would be inserted to keep the artery open and the blood Àowing. He listed what could go wrong, including a small risk of death. (Not me! I thought.) Moments later, my buddies the paramedics wheeled me into the procedure room. One joked, “Just think, if you were in the States, this would cost you about $125,000.” I smiled. Then, he leaned close and whispered, “Good luck, Kathleen.” The mood changed in that cold, ėcient space. Even when I think of it now, it’s like I’m there: Five or so people in scrubs move quickly and quietly. A nurse helps me turn onto my side. A sheet goes up in front of my face, blocking my view, even of my own body. I can see only two things: a clock on the wall and a giant monitor showing shapes I can’t discern. It’s an image of my beating heart. “You can watch the whole procedure,” a nurse says. But I can’t look. The huge screen overwhelms me. Fear is palpable now, but I will myself to stay calm, stay alive. I push away thoughts of my husband, son and mother, knowing I’ll lose it if I think


of never seeing them again. Breathe, I tell myself. My eyes lock on the clock. I hold my focus there while the doctor works, aiming for a tiny clot near my heart. “The culprit,” he calls it. I watch the time pass, three hands ticking.

y y y y y That was Thursday morning; I was home on Saturday afternoon.

y y y y y It felt like the heart attack cleaved my life in two: the before and the after, the then and the now. Life felt normal on May 31. On June 1, it felt fragile and ¿nite. That knowledge changed me. My idea of who I was and what I was able to do was shaken. My heart felt broken, literally and symbolically. This was grief and trauma. I recognized these states because I’d been studying how they ăect adolescents. I’d never dreamed I’d experience trauma—but who does? Over the next two to three months, the remnants of trauma—the fear that I’d pushed away during the heart attack—would return repeatedly, challenging my ĕorts to heal and to hope. My reaction wasn’t unusual. Numerous studies have found signi¿cantly higher rates of anxiety and depression following a myocardial infarction (heart attack) than in the general population; according to one study, women in all age groups and patients aged 45 to 64 (relatively young for cardiac patients) had an even greater risk. More sobering was that following a heart attack, higher rates of anxiety and depression (disorders that often occur together in a grim two-for-one deal) are linked to higher rates of death. “There are almost two times more deaths in heart patients with depression than without,” says Sherry Grace, a professor at Toronto’s York University and senior scientist at the University Health Network. “There are higher morbidity rates, higher repeat procedures and higher hospitalizations, so it’s nothing to take lightly.” Yet, on discharge, I had little idea of the emotional challenges I would face. Carolyn Thomas, who writes a blog for women with heart disease (myheartsisters.org), understands: “I’d love to see every cardiologist, nurse or hospital janitor say to every heart patient before discharge: ‘Heart patients often experience feelings of severe emotional upset, anxiety or depression following such a serious diagnosis. We know that these issues

are common, treatable and usually temporary. You are not alone.’ ” But alone was what I felt, and though I had previously loved solitary “me” time, being alone post– heart attack brought on big fear. Rational or not, I thought I might die alone at any moment. To make matters worse, I was physically weak and occasionally had symptoms such as fatigue, nausea, lightheadedness and shortness of breath—all possible side-ĕects of my new medications; and panic-attack symptoms; and symptoms of a heart attack. How could I tell what was causing them? I became caught in a vicious cycle—the symptoms were real, but then I’d panic and they’d get worse, and then the panic would increase, and so on. Looking back, I think I had two mild panic attacks; both sent me to the ER. The second happened during our much-anticipated cottage vacation more than two months after the heart attack—it was a turning point. By then, I had passed a stress test with an encouraging “Perfect” from my cardiologist in mid-July and started a cardiac rehabilitation program that taught me how to exercise safely while recovering. I was at the gym four to ¿ve days a week. And an echocardiogram showed no permanent damage to my heart. All this meant I was very lucky and grateful, and could swim to my heart’s content, so to speak. We’d enjoyed four days with friends, but then, they left and my husband returned to the city for work. Though tired from socializing, I was determined to enjoy time alone with my son. On that ¿rst day, we swam a lot and canoed. I wanted to show him how healthy I was. But I’d overdone it with ¿ve days of too much activity.

While watching a movie that evening, I suddenly felt very sick. I didn’t say a word, but my son looked over immediately. “Everything OK over there?” he asked. I said I thought I was tired and would go to bed; I actually wanted to go to the hospital. I knew my extreme alertness to any Àutter in my chest was hypervigilance, a response common to both cardiac patients and trauma survivors. I thought if I could just relax, I’d feel better. The next day, I did feel a bit better, and we both enjoyed a lazy day, but as sunset approached, fear did, too, and with it came the heart attack–like anxiety symptoms. It felt irrational to think I’d die right there in front of my barely 16-year-old son, but the thought was enough to send me to the local hospital, which was only 15 minutes away. When a compassionate emergency-room doctor and nurse looked at the ECG and told me my heart was ¿ne, I quietly cried. I was so grateful—for life and for their kindness, because they knew what was happening in my mind and didn’t minimize it. I decided right there to act against anxiety. I’d had enough of this roller-coaster ride.

y y y y y Back in the city, I realized being disciplined only worked for some aspects of heart health. It got me to the gym, kept me on my medications and helped me eliminate added salt, sugar and the bad fats (trans and saturated) from my diet. These steps are proven to treat and help prevent heart disease, and I had no trouble changing habits to save my life. But none of those changes made me feel better emotionally. Fear and anxiety didn’t respond to discipline, but they did dissipate in the emergency room when they were acknowledged as legitimate responses. I’d learned that human kindness soothed my anxiety in seconds, and compassion eliminated my shame—shame that I was clogging up the ER with “fake” heart-attack symptoms, shame that I was frightening my son by being sick, shame for not having the “perfect” recovery, shame for having a heart attack so young in the ¿rst place, shame for just being me. Compassion, I reasoned (and I was surprisingly logical about it), was what my heart needed. It became my own personal prescription. And I knew I’d have to learn to self-administer it.

I started by seeing a psychotherapist I hadn’t been to for years. During the ¿rst meeting, after I’d shared about the heart attack, he told me in his gentle way that he’d had a heart attack 15 years ago. My jaw dropped. He said that now he rarely thinks about it but follows a healthy lifestyle and trusts his doctor to monitor his cardiac health. As we shared experiences, I felt deeply understood, and grateful to have a fellow cardiac survivor walk with me while I explored my fears. Best of all, I saw what recovery can look like. It looked healthy. That gave me hope. I also returned to daily meditation. I watched online talks by Sharon Salzberg and Sylvia Boorstein, two American Buddhists. I tried one of Boorstein’s guided meditations, and it felt right. The words resonated. The practice was elegantly simple. Settle on the breath and repeat unhurriedly: May I feel safe; may I feel content; may I feel strong; may I live with ease. The idea is you move outward from blessing yourself to someone you love, then toward people who have harmed you and toward all beings. I’d noticed that the heart attack itself had made me feel kinder, even to strangers. I knew we shared the same ultimate fate. And although accepting that life is ¿nite is frightening, it can also be uniting. Lovingkindness practice has deepened my feeling of love toward others and helped include myself in the circle. “Self-compassion and loving-kindness practices are very useful in times of anxiety, fear, illness and crisis,” says Dr. Ana Bodnar, a Toronto-based registered clinical psychologist who incorporates Buddhist practices into her work. “Loving kindness is seen as the antidote to fear in Buddhist psychology.” I didn’t know that when I adopted the practice on my own, but I do know I haven’t felt true panic since that day in the ER. It feels as though my emotional and physical selves are helping each other heal. Being gentle with myself has paradoxically made my heart stronger than an exercise bike could ever do on its own. That doesn’t mean I’m not signing up for this year’s Manulife Heart & Stroke Ride for Heart. I hope I’ll be ready for the 50K, but if not, I’ll try the 25. It’s scheduled for June 3, my one-year anniversary of coming home from the hospital—a good day to celebrate the return of hope. CANADIAN LIVING MARCH 2018 | 71

That’s Amore Puttanesca (pronounced “poot-tah-NEHS-kah”) is a spicy Italian tomato sauce usually served with pasta, but we love it as a base for homemade pizza, too. Though anchovies and spicy pepperoncini bring big Àavour to the sauce, it’s the quality tomatoes that truly make it fantastico.

flour. Place 1 ball of the Artisanal Pizza Dough, bottom side up, on 1 square of prepared parchment; using 2 fingers, press edge to create 1-inch border. Using palms, toss dough back and forth between hands without touching border; using fisted knuckles, stretch out dough to 12-inch circle. Return dough to prepared parchment; evenly spread with scant ɦ cup of the Spicy Puttanesca Pizza Sauce, leaving 1-inch border. Top with half of the mozzarella; let stand for 5 minutes. Transfer pizza with parchment to pizza stone; bake until cheese is golden and crust is browned, 12 to 13 minutes, adding 2 slices of the salami during last minute of baking. Chocolate Crust Preheat oven to 350°F. In bowl, stir wafer crumbs with butter; press into bottom and up side of 9-inch fluted tart pan with removable bottom. Place pan on baking sheet; bake until firm, 10 to 12 minutes. Let cool on rack. Filling Meanwhile, place dark chocolate and milk chocolate in heatproof bowl. In small saucepan, heat cream with butter over medium-high heat until butter is melted and mixture just begins to boil. Pour cream mixture over chocolate; let stand for 1 minute. Whisk until smooth. Whisk in whiskey and salt; spread over cooled crust. Refrigerate until cooled, 1½ to 2 hours. Using hand mixer, beat on medium-high speed until stiff peaks form, 5 to 6 minutes; remove from heat. Spoon meringue onto centre of filling; using spatula, spread to edge, making peaks and swirls with back of spoon. Using kitchen blowtorch, toast meringue until golden brown. Serve immediately. Carrot cake is a favourite with its all-important cream cheese icing, but the addition of crystallized ginger takes it up a notch.

MAKES 8 MINI LOAVES HANDS-ON TIME 30 MINUTES TOTAL TIME 1½ HOURS

Cream Cheese Icing half 250 g pkg cream cheese, softened 2 tbsp unsalted butter, softened ½ tsp vanilla ½ cup icing sugar 1⅔ cups all-purpose flour 2 tsp baking powder 1 tsp each cinnamon and ground ginger ½ tsp salt ¼ tsp ground nutmeg 2 eggs 1½ cups packed brown sugar 114 | CANADIAN LIVING MARCH 2018

Cream Cheese Icing In bowl, beat cream cheese with butter until smooth; beat in vanilla. Beat in icing sugar until smooth. Preheat oven to 350°F. Spray and Àour 8 mini loaf pans. In bowl, whisk together Àour, baking powder, cinnamon, ground ginger, salt and nutmeg. In large bowl, whisk together eggs, brown sugar, oil, applesauce

and vanilla until smooth; stir in Àour mixture just until moistened. Stir in carrots and pecans until combined; scrape into prepared pans. Bake until cake tester inserted in centres comes out clean, 25 to 30 minutes. Run paring knife around edges of cakes; let cool in pans for 15 minutes. Transfer directly to racks to cool completely. Using ŏset palette knife, spread 2 tbsp of the Cream Cheese Icing evenly over top of each cake; sprinkle with crystallized ginger (if using).
