tricks, tips and ideas we love

this month Summer months call for trendy boho-inspired accessories, like colourful fringed earrings.

2

Hampton Bay large metal LANTERN in Luxe, $30, homedepot.ca.

BRIGHT IDEA

Achieving the right lighting for alfresco entertaining can be a tricky task. Enter this rust-resistant lantern, which is sure to add ambience to any outdoor space. It’s just under 16 inches tall, so it can hold a candle, so to speak, next to planters without feeling lost. Pro tip: Swap out the candle for succulents to add a touch of greenery indoors or out.

3 1

Seal-It revolutionized the craft world with its flake-free Glitter Tape. Now, the brand has added some sparkle to a somewhat unlikely arena: first aid. If you need to dress a wound, you might as well apply a cute bandage, right? That’s the idea behind Booya! latex-free bandages, which come in four shimmery designs and are so much better than boring beige.

On the Fringe

Statement accessories can really elevate any look. Give a simple outfit that little extra something with a pair of beaded or fabric tassel earrings in a brilliant hue. Draw even more attention to these large-scale yet intricate shouldergrazers by pulling your hair back and showing them of. EARRINGS, $80, anntaylor.com.

BEYOND BANDAGES

“When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant. I could hardly stand to have the old man around.

Brush up on your dad jokes and quotes for Father’s Day.

But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years.” —Unknown

4Gourmet Glossary

Shichimi togarashi (pronounced “shee-CHEE-mee toh-gahRAH-shee”), which translates to “seven-flavour chili pepper,” is a Japanese condiment that’s a blend of seven seasonings. The ingredients typically include, but are not limited to, nori, citrus peel, poppyseeds, sesame seeds and dried chili pepper.

5

PICK ME UP

We found one thing that’s better than a morning cup of joe: a cofee with health benefits, to boot. Cofee Booster is a range of flavourless, heat-stable liquid supplements that can be added to your favourite bevvie (hot or cold) for a nutrient fix. Stir in a teaspoon of one of the four formulations—we’re loving Mind, which contains L-theanine, an amino acid that can boost memory and focus. Or try Collagen, which promotes joint strength and skin health. Not a cofee drinker? You can also add it to tea, smoothies and other beverages. COFFEE BOOSTER, $34 each, cofeebooster.com.

7

A CUT ABOVE

A set of good paring knives is an essential component of any kitchen arsenal. Our pick of the month is this colourful set from Victorinox Swiss Army, the maker of the original Swiss Army Knife. Canadian Living food director Soo Kim loves these small serrated knives for cutting fruit, veggies, cooked eggs and baguettes. Swiss Classic PARING KNIVES, $40/set of 4, swissarmy.com.

This month, The National Ballet of Canada principal dancer Guillaume Côté (who often performs opposite his wife, Heather Ogden) will be celebrating more than Father’s Day. Quebec-born Côté has stepped behind the scenes to choreograph Frame by Frame, a tribute to legendary Canadian filmmaker Norman McLaren, premièring June 1.

USE YOUR LOAF Rid walls (painted or papered) and cabinetry of scuff marks with a piece of white bread. Remove the crust to prevent scratches, then press the bread into a ball and use a dabbing, rather than a rubbing, motion to clean the surface. A slice can also be used to gently pat away grime from an oil painting or to pick up tiny shards of broken glass.

To extend the life of shelled fresh peas, arrange them on a baking sheet in a single layer and freeze until firm, about 30 minutes. Transfer the peas to resealable freezer bags in 1-cup portions. Add the frozen peas to soups, stews and stir-fries during the last few minutes of cooking.

Allbirds cofounders Tim Brown and Joey Zwillinger had a vision to create a shoe that didn’t compromise on comfort, style or environmental impact. Their sustainable footwear company accomplished this trifecta with its wool runner in 2016. Now, they’ve launched the Tree collection, made with the brand’s most sustainable material to date: a textile created from eucalyptus pulp. The shoes provide supreme comfort and breathability, not to mention serious eco-style points. CANADIAN LIVING JUNE 2018 | 11

POUT PERFECTION SHADE

FINDER JUST LIKE LIPSTICKS, STAINS COME IN EVERY COLOUR—BUT FOR SUMMER, WE’RE FEELING PINKS. FIND OUT WHICH ROSY TINT WORKS BEST FOR YOUR SKIN TONE.

For light skin Fair skin with cool undertones looks best in bright candycoloured pinks. Warm pink hues, like coral, are better suited for yellow undertones.

SIMPLE STEPS TO ENSURE YOU GET THAT SULTRY JUST-BITTEN EFFECT.

Step 1

Step 2

Step 3

HAVE DRY LIPS? START WITH A SCRUB. WE LOVE BITE BEAUTY’S AGAVE SUGAR LIP SCRUB ($20, SEPHORA.CA); IT EXFOLIATES WITH PINEAPPLE ENZYMES AND CONDITIONS WITH AGAVE SYRUP. WORK A SMALL AMOUNT OVER YOUR POUT IN CIRCULAR MOTIONS TO SMOOTH.

PLUTINO GROUP MAKEUP ARTIST SHERI STROH RECOMMENDS APPLYING A BALM BEFORE A TINT. “TO PRESERVE A STAIN’S MATTE LOOK, USE A WAXY LIP BALM THAT DOESN’T HAVE A LOT OF SHINE,” SHE SAYS. IT KEEPS DRY SKIN AT BAY AND GIVES THE COLOUR EXTRA STAYING POWER.

WITH STAINS, LESS IS MORE. THEY SHOULD BE LAYERED ON SLOWLY AND SPARINGLY, SO RESIST THE URGE TO PILE IT ON. “APPLY IT WITH YOUR FINGERTIP, DABBING IT ONTO YOUR LIPS,” SAYS STROH. “IT SOFTENS EVERYTHING AND MAKES THE STAIN LOOK MORE LUSH.”

pick your potion Not sure if you’re a gel or powder kind of gal? Discover which tint formula will fulfill your beauty wants and needs.

DIOR Dior Addict Lip Tattoo in Natural Pink, $36, sephora.ca.

Give the perfect pop of colour, plus a plump, youthful look to lips.

For olive skin

Almost any pink shade is a go, except those with a blue undertone, which can make olive complexions look dull. YSL BEAUTY Volupté Liquid Colour Balm in Undress Me Coral, $39, yslbeauty.ca.

For dark skin

Deep skin tones look radiant in bright pink, so go bold. Muted, neutral pinks can look washed out. LANCÔME Matte Shaker Liquid Lipstick in Power Pink, $30, lancome.ca.

LIQUID

GEL

POWDER

BALM

If you’re looking for a light-as-air tint that won’t transfer, try a water stain. This Clarins formula is 77 percent water, which leaves behind a tattoolike finish. The colour is buildable—the more layers, the deeper the shade.

If you love a stained pout but crave a wee bit more hydration, choose a gel formula. This one from Nudestix delivers moisture and major shine. Bonus: It’s a multitasker that can be used on cheeks as well as lips.

Upon contact with the lips, powder stains become slightly creamy and smooth due to their hydrogel ingredients. “I like a powder lip with a really bare face— everything else simple,” says Stroh.

This hydrating balm-and-blush duo contains 100-percentnatural ingredients (95 percent of which are organic). It also has antiaging benefits thanks to hyaluronic acid.

FASHION & BEAUTY ask an expert

Prettier! Faster! Easier! These are the solutions to your summertime beauty and style woes.

Summer Style Savers

With Julia McEwen OUR FASHION & BEAUTY DIRECTOR FINDS THE ANSWERS TO YOUR BEAUTYRELATED QUESTIONS.

Comes in 12 shades.

Q What’s the best way to protect my damaged hair?

The short answer is yes, slightly—but who cares? A horizontal-striped shirt is timeless. For clothes to be flattering, you need to take into account much more than the pattern on the material; consider the cut of the garment and the shape of the individual, too. If you love stripes but are wary of horizontals, choose a vertical version; when worn in bright colours, these stripes have a beach-chair vibe—fitting for summer. To learn more about the power of a good hair day, visit canadianliving.com/goodhairday.

Q Is there anything that can cover a tattoo on my leg—besides clothing or pantyhose? Absolutely! Whether you’re looking to conceal a faded tattoo, spider veins or a portwine stain, Dermablend Professional Leg and Body Makeup is the answer. The formula is lightweight, buildable and hydrating—and also transfer-resistant: It becomes hard to smudge when the brand’s Loose Setting Powder, $34, is patted over top. Let it set for a couple of minutes, then brush of the excess and—voilà—up to 16 hours of coverage. DERMABLEND PROFESSIONAL Leg and Body Makeup, $36, beautyboutique.ca.

Do horizontal stripes make me look wider?

Believe it or not, your best line of defence when it comes to your hair is conditioner. “Conditioners can ofer replenishment and an infusion of ingredients like few other forms of hair care can,” says Jeni Thomas, principal scientist for Pantene. And with new formulations that target the inner hair fibre, instead of just smoothing the outside, conditioner can set you up for a good hair day every day. Thomas’s tip? Condition your hair from root to tip, not just the ends, paying special attention to where you do the most damage—including where you apply heat or tie your ponytail.

OF CANADIAN HOUSEHOLDS USE CONDITIONER A shocking statistic given that conditioner is the most accessible and easy way to achieve a good hair day. The diference can be seen and felt —softer, shiner, more manageable strands. Using a conditioner regularly is really the foundation to improving the health of your hair.

FIND YOUR MANE MATCH

TIP:

New and better formulas are making it easier than ever to reap the rewards of an efective conditioning experience—the problem is many people don’t know what type of hair they have. Those at either end of the spectrum (i.e. if you have extremely thin hair or very curly or coiled hair) have a better handle on how to treat their strands—it’s the rest of us in the middle that could use a little help.

When you condition, condition the areas where you apply heat—this means conditioning from root to tip if you blowdry your hair daily.

If Your hair is... COLOUR-TREATED “If you are colouring your hair regularly,” says Jeni Thomas, principle scientist at P&G Beauty, “you need that extra boost of strengthening.” This means not only using hair products that will preserve your colour (especially if you find it fading fast thanks to outside factors like the sun), but ones that will keep your hair shiny and healthy too.

Use

FLAT AND DOESN’T HOLD A STYLE

DRY TO THE TOUCH AND BRITTLE

PRONE TO FRIZZ AND FEELS HEAVY

“If frizz for you means falling flat versus getting big, those are indications you have finer hair,” says Thomas. Other indications you have thin hair? It doesn’t hold a style, gets tangled easily and your braids and ponytails are thin and small.

Dry and brittle hair can be due to genetics, but often we do the damage ourselves with too much summer sun exposure, chlorine damage or hair colouring—and it needs an extra dose of hydration to get those soft, touchable and shiny strands you’re after.

Heavy and thick hair is usually defined by unkempt waves, frizz and a severe lack of shine—not to mention an overall feeling of heaviness. In the past, you’ve probably felt that conditioner weighs your hair down, but you need moisture and smoothing agents to make your hair bouncy and smooth.

DAMAGED FROM REGULAR USE OF HEAT TOOLS If you know you do damage to your hair—like using heat tools daily or even wearing your hair in a too-tight ponytail too often, then you need a proactive product that helps to undo the damage, while also protecting from your next blow dry.

A pod of belugas swims in Hudson Bay off the coast of Manitoba

You don’t have to go far to find big in and around Winnipeg! Find our travel guide at canadianliving.com/ moremanitoba.

BACK TO NATURE Leave your to-do list at home. It’s time to return to simple pleasures and untouched beauty with three unique summer excursions in the wilds of Manitoba.

1 NORTHERN GETAWAY

Perched along the edge of Hudson Bay at Manitoba’s northeastern tip, the tiny 900person town of Churchill is a rugged gem with major travel potential for adventurers, nature lovers and digital-detox seekers alike. The northern village may earn its media coverage as a wonderland of snow and ice, but it’s much more than a home to the aurora borealis and majestic polar bears. Although you may still see polar bears sleeping, swimming and walking along the tundra in the summer, the town’s star attraction in the months of July and August is the world’s highest concentration of beluga whales (as many as 60,000), which spill into Hudson Bay and Churchill River to feed, mate and give birth. Book à la carte activities with Sea North Tours or full packages with Lazy Bear Expeditions; you

can try stand-up paddleboarding or kayaking with the sociable creatures or snorkel behind a Zodiac boat through the chilly waters with gentle whales mere feet away. If you prefer to take to the air, hop aboard a helicopter ride with Hudson Bay Helicopters to view the belugas from the hazy blue skies. You’ll see a host of other wildlife, too, since the area is a haven for seals, Arctic hare, Arctic fox and more than 200 bird species that thrive as the snow melts and the barren landscape bursts into bloom ZLWK SXUSOH ¿ UHZHHG DQG YLEUDQW RUDQJH lichen. The town is so far north (though D PHUH WZR KRXU &DOP $LU À LJKW IURP Winnipeg) that the tree line of the boreal forest rests in the distance, yet, in an unexpected twist, the site boasts temperatures as warm as 25oC and a maritime feel from WKH VDOW\ EUHH]H EORZLQJ LQ R̆ WKH ED\ Due to its size, the town is void of franchises and chains, so all of the restaurant and lodging options are authentically local.

It’s Manitoba’s only national park that is available to travellers and beloved by locals for its town site, clear waters and scenic hikes—yet it’s virtually unknown outside of the Prairies. Located a three-hour drive from Winnipeg, Riding Mountain is a hot spot for Prairie glamping with a mix of unique accommodations: oTENTiks (prospector-style tents on wooden platforms with wood stoves and front decks);

two-by-10-metre walled microcubes; or yurts (cylindrical canvas tents built on wooden frames)—each with beds so you’ll glean a taste of the wilderness with none of the discomfort. Pack your hiking shoes because the park has 400 kilometres of trails; take the Gorge Creek and Bald Hill routes for Insta-worthy photo ops of endless Prairie skies. Wildlife lovers will appreciate the chance to spot black bears, lynx and elk, plus bison at Lake Audy Bison Enclosure, where you’ll see the massive animals wandering up to cars to take a closer look. Also be sure to browse the Itsanitaq Museum’s collection of Inuit carvings and artifacts dating from 1700 B.C., as well as the SeaWalls Churchill series of building murals that dot 30 kilometres of shoreline and were painted by international artists to inspire the community to protect the ocean. You’ll leave feeling an appreciation for the North that makes the visit to Churchill worthy of topping any Canadian’s bucket list.

A canoe trip in Nopiming Provincial Park is the perfect summer getaway.

Be Your Own Hero Forget being Wonder Woman and prioritize yourself rather than always trying to be everything to everyone else. TEXT LIZA FINLAY ILLUSTRATION WENTING LI

I have a love-hate relationship with Wonder Woman. I love that strong, courageous, kick-ass women are becoming the heroines of blockbuster movies. But I hate that women and girls are made to believe they have to be everything (smart, beautiful, brave and able to save the world) in order to be OK. The belief that we have to be everything to everyone, and to do it all without breaking a sweat, is why so many women report debilitating stress. According to a 2010 study by the American Psychological Association, women are more likely than men to experience the physical and emotional symptoms of stress (see Do You Have Wonder Woman Syndrome?, below). The study also found that 28 percent of women rank their stress as an eight, nine or 10 on a 10-point scale, and 49 percent of the same women said their stress had LQFUHDVHG RYHU WKH SDVW ¿YH \HDUV Wow, those numbers are staggering. So why is it that half of the women surveyed reported they’re not doing enough to manage the daily stress in their lives? It goes back to what I call Wonder Woman Syndrome, the faulty belief that we have to do it all, do it well and do for others before ourselves. A colleague of mine who researches and writes regularly on self-care advises her clients to construct a wellness wall; each brick is an action we can take to reduce our stress, but what’s more, each brick also acts as a boundary, protecting us from the self-recrimination, the judgment and the “shoulds” that take aim at our emotional and physical health.

DO YOU HAVE WONDER WOMAN SYNDROME? Look for these physical and emotional symptoms of high stress: depression; anxiety; emotional dysregulation; anger or irritability; disturbed sleep; foggy or impaired memory; headaches; fatigue; and digestive disruption. 42 | CANADIAN LIVING JUNE 2018

The belief that we have to be everything to everyone, and to do it all without breaking a sweat, is why so many women report debilitating stress.

Here’s how you might build your own wellness wall, brick by brick.

BRICK 1: PUT YOURSELF FIRST. We like to idealize martyrs, but let’s get real—they all die. You plug your smartphone in every day to recharge it, right? We need to recharge our own batteries, too, or we’re no good to anyone.

BRICK 2: CULTIVATE SELF-COMPASSION. We women are very hard on ourselves: We’re never quite successful enough, rich enough, thin enough, perfect enough. We measure ourselves by a set of standards we would never dream of holding our best pals accountable to. What

if we were to treat ourselves with the same nonjudgment and appreciation we would a friend? By cultivating the courage to be imperfect, we no longer hold ourselves to impossible standards, but, instead, appreciate all the micromovements we make toward our goals.

BRICK 4: PRACTISE MINDFULNESS. Stress increases when we time travel (worrying about what we did or didn’t do in the past, and what we should or shouldn’t do in the future). Right here, right now is a moment in time you’ll never get back.

BRICK 5: JUST S.T.O.P. BRICK 3: CREATE CONNECTIONS. Stress and anxiety are the stepsisters of shame—and shame is like a bacterium that loves to reproduce in dank, dark, deep places. By sharing our stories, we lighten our loads. It’s that simple.

Sense what you’re feeling. Irritable? Anxious? Take a moment to be in the now. Objectify the feeling. This isn’t your failing, so be self-compassionate. Plan an intervention. Take a long bath or enjoy a walk.

I’d always known I wanted a white-picket-fence life: Be a stay-at-home mom with a husband and several kids. With Don, I saw my dream coming true. We got married in 1989. He never parked his motorcycle at the house—it stayed in Quebec. On weekends, we went to our sons’ hockey games and hosted breakfasts for the kids my children played with, along with their parents. We took a family vacation to Walt Disney World. Life felt very normal.

Don’s trial began in Montreal in early 2004, three long years later. In that time, I’d managed as a single mom, cooking meals and shuttling the boys to hockey. Don and I didn’t have joint bank accounts, so I had to get signing authority to access his savings. There was only $2,000 in the account, and I needed to pay the bills, so I applied for social assistance. The sad irony of the wife of a Hells Angel being broke was not lost on me. “All put together, all our stories. Because all we got right now are reservation stories, and shitty versions from outdated history textbooks. A lot of us live in cities now. Since one of my favourite books, In the Skin of a Lion, is by Michael Ondaatje, I was excited for this new work. It didn’t disappoint. Set in the post– Second World War era, Warlight centres on a man’s discovery of familial secrets, and it’s more focused than previous works. As always, the author meanders through the tale, gathering memories and anecdotes to create a fully realized story world that seems familiar, if also a little hazy. My favourite remains (my love of ITSOAL is too strong), but I’m looking forward to rereading this one, too, to learn more about protagonist Nathanial and his stoic mother, Rose. —AD

Ayesha at Last

This sweet debut novel ticks all the boxes for one of summer’s best reads: It’s smart, witty, romantic and utterly charming. Taking cues from Pride and Prejudice, the story revolves around pretty Ayesha Shamsi, who, along with her Muslim family, lives across the street from the more conservative—and attractive—Khalid Mirza. As the two clash over everything from poetry to arranged marriage, they also begin to connect. When mistaken identity, troublesome relatives and workplace drama loom, it’s up to these two adorable characters to save the day DQG ¿QG WKHLU SDWK WR WUXH ORYH —SM

Sara Cation has wept-in-public her way through a litany of literary heartbreaks, from The Little Prince to A Little Life, but she’s buoyed by the likes of Shteyngart and Safran Foer. She reads anything set in North Korea or India but never touches self-help books or romances (they’re just not her bag). Alexandra Donaldson loves reading literary ďŹ ction, essay collections, dark humour, Canadian authors and magical realism. This, and the fact that she’s one of our resident fashion editors, makes her the closest thing we have to Belle from Beauty and the Beast. Amanda Etty has an affinity for nail-biting thrillers and smart, funny books written by smart, funny women. She’s always on the hunt for her next favourite novel, although she’s currently working her way through a stack of parenting books (toddlers, right?). Suzanne Moutis almost always has her nose in a book, be it Golden Age mystery, Second World War history or Hollywood tell-all. She unapologetically loves Regency romances and young adult ďŹ ction but atly refuses to read anything that will make her cry.

HEALTHY LIFESTYLE

If you are feeling exhausted and in need of revitalization, you should consider a detox or cleanse. With Active LiverTM you have the tool to do this gently and on a daily basis.

DETOX YOUR BODY - EVERY DAY! EACH DAY, OUR LIVER IS WORKING HARD to remove waste products and toxins from processed foods, unclean air, water and even our own body. But as we get exposed to increasingly more toxins, the liver struggles to remove them all and starts storing them in our body fat. We quickly notice the results in our energy levels, in our lack of youthful appearance – and surprisingly, on our waistlines.

I suffer from headaches or brain fog

UNJUNKING YOUR BODY

I’m tired all the time

A detox, like a water or juice fast, is an excellent way to rid the body of stored toxins, but it is often difficult to abide by, and involves days or even weeks of feeling tired and sick. However, there are other ways.

TEST YOURSELF : YES NO I have a hard time losing weight I have indigestion & bloating

My skin itches and I see brown spots My tongue is coated Does this sound like you? Then try Active Liver as a help to promote your liver health.

DETOX WITH ONE TABLET A DAY Active LiverTM is a natural health product that improves your liver’s health and helps you detox on a daily basis – all year round. With just one tablet a day, it gently but effectively uses known herbal extracts to facilitate detoxing of the body –without the “side effects”.

DID YOU KNOW?

The Liver & Your Waistline The liver is an important fat burning organ. If the liver is sluggish or clogged with waste material it will be less able to work, and fat will start to build up, under the skin, as belly fat and even inside the internal organs (as in a fatty liver). Making sure your liver is working well will help you flush fats from the body.

Active Liver™ by dic contains milk thistle, an herb known for protecting the liver and reducing heavy metal toxicity. It also contains turmeric, a superfood and one of the most anti-inflammatory and protective antioxidants known. Finally, Active Liver contains globe artichoke, a plant used for centuries for increasing bile production. Bile is used to bind and flush toxins and fats from the body.

health hack of the month GOOD HYDRATION

PHOTOGRAPHY, STOCKSY UNITED

Do you struggle to drink an adequate amount of water each day? Interestingly, the sensation of thirst declines over our lifetime, so adults aged 65-plus are at an increased risk of dehydration. Try these roundabout ways to wet your whistle: Invigorate your H2O with fruit and herb infusions (blueberry, grapefruit and rosemary, anyone?) or drink sparkling mineral water; eat produce that’s high in water content, such as cucumber, watermelon and celery; brew your own iced herbal tea; or whip up a nourishing veggie and fruit smoothie.

HEALTH & FITNESS ask an expert

Doctors IN THE HOUSE Health-care pros tell us their patients’ most-asked questions. This issue, our experts talk about melanoma, endometriosis and chronic pain disease.

Q

How can I tell if a sun spot needs to be examined by a dermatologist?

Dr. Piguet says “When in doubt, determine which moles may be a problem using the ABCDE guidelines for detecting potential melanomas. Asymmetry A benign mole is usually symmetrical and round. Border Look for an irregular perimeter that’s difficult to define. Colour A variance in or uneven distribution of colour may be a warning sign. Diameter A melanoma spot is usually more than six millimetres in diameter. Evolution The most important characteristic is whether or not a mole has gone through sudden changes in any of the aforementioned features. “If you notice one or more of these attributes, have your family doctor refer you to a dermatologist.”

58 | CANADIAN LIVING JUNE 2018

Q

My menstrual cramps are quite painful. Should I be worried about endometriosis?

Dr. Grundland says “A number of factors can lead to severe menstrual cramps, and endometriosis is one possibility. Endometriosis occurs when the endometrium, or uterine lining, grows outside the uterus—on the ovaries or fallopian tubes, for example—and can afect premenopausal women. Symptoms can also include pelvic pain during sexual intercourse, irregular bleeding and infertility. If a woman is worried about any of these symptoms, she should talk to her family physician, who may perform a physical exam or another assessment, such as blood tests or a pelvic ultrasound. However, the only definitive way to diagnose endometriosis is through laparoscopic surgery. Often, we’ll manage symptoms using the birth control pill, other hormonal therapies or pain medication. When these treatments don’t help, or there are issues with fertility, doctors will recommend surgery.”

DR. VINCENT PIGUET, HEAD OF DERMATOLOGY, WOMEN’S COLLEGE HOSPITAL, TORONTO; DR. BATYA GRUNDLAND, FAMILY PHYSICIAN AND MATERNITY CARE LEAD, WOMEN’S COLLEGE HOSPITAL, TORONTO; DR. TANIA DIRENNA, MEDICAL DIRECTOR OF THE TORONTO ACADEMIC PAIN MEDICINE INSTITUTE, WOMEN’S COLLEGE HOSPITAL, TORONTO

Q

What are some coping strategies for chronic pain disease?

Dr. DiRenna says “Chronic pain disease, defined as any pain lasting longer than three to six months, afects one in five Canadians. It may be brought on by an injury or an ongoing cause, such as illness. In other cases, there may be no clear cause. Management options are aimed at teaching patients to function day by day and to focus on living a meaningful and purposeful life, rather than the pain they’re experiencing. These approaches include improving coping skills and reducing stress through cognitive behavioural therapy and mindful meditation; practising healthy habits, such as exercise, and improving sleep; and teaching patients to use medications and nerve-block injections only as adjuncts to and not the mainstay of therapy.” Send your health questions to cl.readers@tva.ca.

How Health & Fitness editor Amanda Etty felt before, during and DIWHU UXQQLQJ KHU ÂżUVW KDOI PDUDWKRQ

Running has a lot going for it. It’s convenient—with no class schedules to adhere to—and it requires little equipment beyond a good pair of shoes. The high-impact workout also strengthens bones and muscles (the most important being your heart), increases energy and burns an average of 600 to 800 calories per hour, depending on \RXU VL]H DQG SDFH 'LHKDUGV ¿QG LW PHGLWDWLYH DQG VWUHVV UHOLHYLQJ and studies show that it can be as powerful a mood-booster as antidepressants. Here’s how I took my easygoing jogging routine to the next level and why I’m not looking back.

Jogging has always made me feel good, strong and centred. It’s my favourite cardiovascular workout and the perfect complement to my strengthening and stretching routines. The thing about running is that no matter how much I sometimes dread getting out the door, I always return feeling happy, invigorated and clearheaded. I’d wanted to run a half marathon for the better part of a decade and, the year before our 30th birthdays, a friend and I made a pact WR ¿QDOO\ JR IRU LW 1RW ORQJ DIWHU , OHDUQHG , ZDV SUHJQDQW ZLWK P\ daughter, Evie, now nearly two years old. I signed up. There’s nothing like the anticipation of an overseas race to kick-start a training regimen.

The 2018 Saucony Cambridge Half Marathon took place on a quintessentially grey English day in March. The race passes by some of the magniďŹ cent colleges in the historic town.

I used a training app that allowed me to set a goal in terms of distance and pace, as well as the number of days per week I was able to run (being honest with myself, I opted for a maximum of three), then it created a straightforward and totally achievable plan. I loved that the app tracked the distance and routes of my runs and added a check mark next to each completed day. There must be some psychological reward system that goes along with those check CANADIAN LIVING JUNE 2018 | 63

the brand’s shoes are my go-to—more comfy than any others I’ve tried, and they look so dang cool.

More than halfway through my training, a friend began to join me on my long Sunday morning runs. He’s a seasoned runner who has run three marathons, as well as a 55-kilometre trail race. He held me accountable to training during the most frigid stretch of the winter, and we found time to chat while racking up some serious mileage. Some days, I’d complain (a lot); others, I’d boast about how wonderful I was feeling or how lucky that the sun was out and the temperature wasn’t ƒ& :HÂśG GRGJH SLJHRQV DQG ZDYH KHOOR WR fellow runners. One of the hardest things about training ZDV ¿QGLQJ WLPH WR UXQ :LWK DQ HQHUJHWLF toddler and a time-consuming commute, my days already begin at 5:30 a.m., and I wasn’t about to start them any earlier. I knew that I’d have to run longer distances on weekends— while my husband, Matt, held down the fort at home—and focus on speed and shorter distances (no more than eight kilometres) on weeknights. For other folks, lunchtime RU PRUQLQJV PLJKW EH D EHWWHU ¿W EXW WKH point is to pick a time that’s not going to be encroached on by higher-priority tasks—or more appealing opportunities, like sleeping in. , PDGH UXQQLQJ ¿W LQWR P\ GD\ WR GD\ OLIH otherwise I’d talk myself out of it. I even allocated time to cross-training (I enjoy yoga) WR LPSURYH FRUH VWUHQJWK IRUP DQG ÀH[LELOLW\ and to avoid injury from repetitive strain. I learned that having the right clothing and shoes is important—for the obvious reasons of comfort and safety, but also because knowing you look cool in your sleek apparel and sweet kicks will motivate you to run harder, faster and longer. The good news is that runQLQJ LV D IDLUO\ LQH[SHQVLYH DFWLYLW\ DQG WKH gear was my one cost. I’m a Saucony devotee;

Murakami writes, “If I used being busy as an excuse not to run, I’d never run again. I have only a few reasons to keep on running, and a truckload of them to quit. The hurt part is an unavoidable reality, but whether or not you can stand any more is up to the runner himself.â€? If you’re looking for fodder for your training, this book is where it’s at.

In many instances, it was the recovery (all the foam-rolling, stretching and steamy Epsom-salt baths), not the running, that took up most of my time. I was paranoid about VX̆HULQJ DQ LQMXU\ LQ WKH WLPH OHDGLQJ XS to the half marathon. I used therapy balls whenever I sat down to play with my daughter or watched a movie with Matt. The incredible Tessa Virtue is one-half of ice dancing’s Olympic goldmedal-winning duo (with partner Scott Moir) and has recently been named NIVEA’s first-ever Canadian brand ambassador. Here, we chat with this “it” girl about skin care, working out and how she finds precious “me” time.

beauty and empowerment “To me, beauty is all about how you feel in your skin and how you present yourself to the world. That stems from confidence—knowing who you are and what you stand for, as well as being sure about what you want and going after it fearlessly. That’s all intermingled with skin care, beauty and fashion.”

” travel must-haves “When I travel, I take my makeup off so my skin can breathe, and NIVEA’s micellar water is perfect for that. It’s ideal for the airplane since you don’t need additional water, plus it removes makeup and product residue. I also always bring along a Voluspa candle; the familiar scent grounds me when I travel.”

training days “[Partner] Scott [Moir] and I typically skate for four hours a day, then there’s two hours of off-ice gym workouts, doing cycling, Pilates, strengthening, conditioning and, sometimes, ballroom dancing—depending on our program— which is really fun.”

soothing sore muscles “As an older athlete, the balance of work and recovery has become more crucial. A lot of the day is devoted to treatment; I get massages and work with an osteopath and a physiotherapist. There’s a lot of mental prep work, too, so Scott and I work with a sport psychologist. We

take stock of how you feel and do some selfreflection. There’s nothing quite like a cup of tea and some time to think and process—especially as an introvert, I really need that ‘me’ time.”

self-care “The first thing I do every morning is have a glass of hot water with lemon for its alkalinity and detoxing effects. My skin-care regimen is minimal; I drink a lot of water, sleep as much as I can and moisturize.”

favourite off-ice workout “I love Pilates. There’s something so centring and grounding about it. As a former ballet dancer, I identify with a sense of bodyand self-awareness. I leave feeling taller after every Pilates session.”

If your bathroom feels more dungeon than day spa, start by maximizing light. Choose sheer window treatments to provide privacy while allowing light to ood in. Don’t have a window? Use mirrors to fake the efect (they’ll bounce light around and visually multiply the space). Next up, try a tonal tune-up: It’s amazing what a dose of white can do to lift a space, but too much of this shade can read as stark, so add it bit by bit. Begin with a quick ďŹ x like swapping the bath mat or shower curtain; up the ante by painting the vanity; and, ďŹ nally, tackle the walls with paint or tiles.

Pale PICKS

Whether you opt for true white or a pale pastel, muted shades are best suited in a room that’s short on square footage and natural light. Here are my top bathroom-ready selections.

Canadian Living & Mott’s Clamato present

Sweet vs. Spicy Whether you’re a fiery sort who loves to feel the burn or a sugar babe who savours a sweet finish, we have a tasty spin on Canada’s quintessential cocktail for you—and just in time for National Caesar Day on May 17. Which one will you sip in celebration?

TIP

Switch up your citrus and substitute the orange juice with tangerine or grapefruit juice. Add herbs for extra fragrance.

TIP

Want more clam flavour? Add another shot of clam nectar. The world is your clam... er, oyster.

CAESAR SANGRITA The Caesar Sangrita offers its own special fresh Mexican flare with a blend of orange juice, Mott’s Clamato and tequila. The OJ adds a citrus hit that pairs beautifully with tequila, making this cocktail bright and refreshing...and unlike anything you’ve ever tried before! 2 dashes hot pepper sauce freshly cracked black peppercorns, to taste (about 2 grinds) pinch coarse salt 1½ oz orange juice 1 oz 100% blue agave tequila 3 oz Mott’s Clamato Lime Cocktail Rim: Coarse salt and freshly cracked black peppercorns Garnish: Orange wheel and orange twist Rim a highball glass with citrus and rimmer. Fill with ice cubes. Add ingredients in the order listed and stir to mix well. Garnish and enjoy!

CLAMDIGGER CAESAR Elevate the classic spicy Caesar by amplifying those salty and savoury seafood notes. It’s simple: Just add some extra clam nectar and garnish with white wine–steamed clams. Freshly cracked pepper adds a little more fire. 1 oz gin 2 dashes hot pepper sauce 2 dashes Worcestershire sauce freshly cracked black peppercorns, to taste (about 5 grinds) 1 oz clam nectar 3 oz Mott’s Clamato The Works Cocktail Rim: Celery salt or Mott’s Clamato Rimmer Garnish: Clams steamed in white wine, herbs and Mott’s Clamato Cocktail Rim a highball glass with citrus and rimmer. Fill with ice cubes. Add ingredients in the order listed and stir to mix well. Garnish and enjoy!

SOME LIKE IT HOT For many Canadians, Caesars are synonymous with sunny days. Come summer, we’re not just red-blooded—we’re Caesar-blooded. So it’s only fitting that Dan Aykroyd, one of Canada’s most beloved comedians, developed his own version of the iconic drink for National Caesar Day...and, oh boy, is it hot! Get the recipe at mottsclamato.ca/nationalcaesarday. Can you handle the heat?
