mother, like daughter My late mother, shown here with eight-year-old me, was something special. She was elegance itself, stylishly dressed, perfectly manicured and never caught without a fresh coat of her signature carmine-red lipstick. Our home was as polished as she was, always ready for an impromptu fĂŞte. Drugstores are stocking their shelves with antihistamines, but why not try a natural allergy-relief remedy? Quercetin, an antioxidant that helps stabilize the release of histamines (the chemicals that cause itching and sneezing brought on by allergies), may reduce the severity of symptoms. It’s naturally occurring in foods such as apples and onions, plus it can be found in supplement form (often combined with vitamin C). As with any remedy, talk to your doctor before taking quercetin.

SPRING PEA SPAGHETTI CARBONARA MAKES 4 SERVINGS HANDS-ON TIME 25 MINUTES TOTAL TIME 25 MINUTES

TIP To portion out 225 grams of dry spaghetti, hold it in your fist; the correct amount will measure 1¼ inches in diameter.
spaghetti strips bacon, cut in chunks fresh green peas egg yolks finely grated Parmesan or PecorinoRomano cheese, divided pepper salt pea shoots (optional)
In large pot of boiling water, cook pasta according to package directions. Reserving 1 cup of the cooking liquid, drain. Meanwhile, in large nonstick skillet, cook bacon over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until crisp, 6 to 8 minutes. Using slotted spoon, transfer bacon to paper towel–lined plate. Drain all but 2 tbsp fat from pan. Return half of the bacon to pan; add peas and cook over medium heat, stirring, until heated through, about 1 minute. Remove from heat. Add pasta and ½ cup of the cooking liquid; toss to coat. In bowl, whisk egg yolks with ¾ cup of the Parmesan. Working quickly, scrape egg yolk mixture, pepper and salt into pasta mixture; toss until sauce is thickened, adding additional cooking liquid if needed to reach desired consistency. Divide among plates; sprinkle with remaining ¼ cup Parmesan and bacon. Top with pea shoots (if using). PER SERVING about 531 cal, 25 g pro, 24 g total fat (9 g sat. fat), 54 g carb (6 g dietary fibre, 5 g sugar), 317 mg chol, 890 mg sodium, 372 mg potassium. % RDI: 17% calcium, 31% iron, 22% vit A, 17% vit C, 97% folate.

I’ve been colouring my hair with the same brand of dye for 20 years. Recently, I’ve noticed something’s off. Has the formula changed, or have I? The answer is both. If you’ve been using the same dye for many years, the formula has likely been updated multiple times. And you’ve transformed, too; complexions change as we age. “Any woman who’s over 40 should start thinking about lightening her colour, even if it’s just around her face,” says Clairol colour director James Corbett. If you’re colouring at home, he suggests buying two dyes that are slightly diferent shades; use the lighter one for the front and the darker shade for the rest.

This style can work on hair that’s a few days between shampoos or freshly washed. For the former, use a flatiron to smooth and add shine to the top half. If you’re starting with clean, damp hair, apply a cream heat protectant throughout, then a styling mousse to the top section.
To set your dry or damp tresses, “blow-dry hair in the direction you’re going to put it up,” says Brager. Use a brush to sweep the top and sides backward until smooth.
Use the tail of a comb to create a horizontal part along the back of your head. “I always look at a person’s profile to figure out what will be the most beautiful height,” says Brager. “If it’s too high, it can look ’80s, and if it’s too low, it can look flat.” The sweet spot for this style is the base of your crown, which sits just above your ears.
Once you have a clean part between sections, swap out your comb for a boar-bristle brush. Rake the top half backward, gathering hair at the base of your crown, then secure using two clear elastics for added hold. “The most important thing is to keep the sides very tight and smooth,” says Brager.

Q What other ingredients can I use in conjunction with retinol? “Retinol plays well with hyaluronic acid or glycerin,” says Dr. Cohen. In fact, using a hydrating ingredient in tandem with retinol can help reduce irritation brought on by the anti-aging agent. For added skin-renewal benefits, retinol pairs nicely with vitamin C, as well as acids—as long as you take eforts to reduce irritation that can occur when combining two or more strong ingredients.
Q Is retinol only for anti-aging skin care? No! Retinol started out as an acne treatment. But doctors found that it also helped smooth wrinkles,

and it was adopted as an anti-aging ingredient. “Retinol is good for anyone with sun damage, uneven skin tone, acne breakouts or acne scarring,” says Dr. Cohen.
What percentage of retinol should I look for? “The higher the percentage, the more active the retinol,” says Dr. Cohen. But higher doesn’t necessarily mean better. If you’re new to retinol, test the water with a low concentration (starting at 0.01 percent) and slowly work your way up to a higher percentage (up to one percent) if your skin is able to tolerate one.
Q Does retinol increase sensitivity to the sun? Retinol stimulates cell turnover and exfoliation, which can make skin more sensitive—both in general and to UV rays. But, according to Dr. Julia Carroll, a dermatologist at Compass Dermatology in Toronto, as long as you wear sunscreen throughout the day, you’ll be protected from UV damage. Still worried? Include additional sun protection for your face, such as sunglasses and a widebrimmed hat.

It’s at about this time every year that we start thinking about freshening up our style—sartorial, hair and even life. The idea of transforming a lifestyle gives me much pleasure, not only because I work in mental health but also because, in psychological parlance, lifestyle has a double meaning, connoting our eating, drinking, exercising and sleeping habits as well as the pattern of beliefs that motivates behaviour. $OIUHG $GOHU RQH RI WKH HDUO\ KXPDQLVWV ¿UVW ÀRDWHG WKH QRWLRQ WKDW LQ HDUO\ FKLOGKRRG DQ LQGLvidual develops a set of convictions about self and the world that informs the style with which that person navigates life. Those beliefs are usually deeply embedded in the murky depths of memory, operating at the subconscious equivalent of autopilot, but do you ever stop and ask yourself: • Why am I on yet another beach vacation when what I really want is to hike the Camino Real? ‡ :K\ GR , FRQVLVWHQWO\ ¿QG P\VHOI ZRUNLQJ LQWR the wee hours? ‡ :K\ DP , DOZD\V WKH RQH OHIW KROGLQJ WKH EDJ RQ JURXS SURMHFWV" ‡ :K\ GR , RYHUHDW DQG ZK\ LV LW DOZD\V OHIWRYHU PDVKHG SRWDWRHV RU PDF œQœ FKHHVH" In short, why do we do what we do? What motivates our choices and guides our decision-making? This question has intrigued psychologists for many years. For more than a century, social scientists have been exploring the concept of phenomenology—a fancy way of saying that what we believe, think and perceive are entirely subjective. People like me work hard to unearth the highly subjective beliefs that govern our clients’ behaviour. Psychologists and psychotherapists are archeologists of the unconscious. And why should that matter to you? Because those unconscious and idiographic ways of seeing and believing shape your choices—and not all of your choices are good ones. In fact, many of them create patterns that limit and undermine you. Isolating and questioning the unhealthy thoughts that hold us back allows us an opportunity to swap them for better ones—but you have to tap into your unconscious in order to recognize negative thought patterns and make positive changes. 44 | CANADIAN LIVING MAY 2018

A reverse mortgage is a loan against the equity in your home. To qualify, you must be at least 55 years old and own your home outright or have a sizable amount of equity in it. You can borrow up to 55 percent of your equity, and you’re not required to pay it back until you sell the home, move out or pass away (in which case, your estate will SD\ R̆ WKH DPRXQW RZHG ,I approved, you can receive the loan as a lump sum, scheduled payments or both. That money, plus any interest, can be paid back at any time; however, there will likely be a penalty if this is GRQH ZLWKLQ WKH ¿UVW WKUHH \HDUV
The longer you stay in your home after you take a reverse mortgage, the greater the drawdown on your equity, as the compounding interest on the principal can accumulate quickly. It’s possible there will be little to no equity remaining when you leave your home—meaning less, if any, inheritance for your EHQH¿FLDULHV +RZHYHU neither you nor your estate is liable for any shortfall if housing prices drop and the outstanding mortgage balance exceeds the value of the home.
With a reverse mortgage, you’ll enjoy tax-free funds and have the opportunity to stay in your home, but you’ll greatly erode what is OLNHO\ \RXU ODUJHVW ¿QDQFLDO asset and what may be \RXU ODVW VRXUFH RI ¿QDQcial independence. You’ll pay higher fees and a higher interest rate than you would on a conventional mortgage. Most importantly, when you run out of the money you borrowed against your home equity, there may be no cash left after the sale of your house.
A reverse mortgage is a good choice for people who want to access some of the equity in their home without the worry of repaying the mortgage while they’re living there. If these realities don’t resonate with you, consider an alternative solution. Think about selling or downsizing your home and putting the proceeds into a safe investment, then living R̆ WKH LQFRPH WKDW LW JHQHUDWHV This may also allow you to move into a retirement facility, if that’s an option. If you’re set on staying in your home, you might want to consider an equity line of credit, which is a secured loan; you’re required to make interest-only monthly payments—at a much lower interest rate—and you GRQœW KDYH WR SD\ R̆ WKH EDODQFH until you leave your home.

WHO Sisters Ann Sperling and Susan Sperling Richardson, and Susan’s daughter Jill Richardson Branby WHERE Kelowna, B.C. THEIR STORY By the time Ann, Susan and Jill (and their partners) launched their wine label in 2008, their Okanagan farm had already been in the family for almost 160 years. But although they had long grown grapevines on the property, the Sperlings had always sold their crops to wineries. “Having wine under our own label was a family dream,” says Ann, a longtime winemaker in Canada and Argentina. She was able to help realize that collective dream when her parents were looking for one of their kids to take over the family farm so they could retire. “It was a chance to take what I knew about the vineyard from walking over it in my bare feet throughout my childhood,” says Ann. Everyone was on board, taking on roles based on their skills: Jill volunteered to run day-to-day operations; Ann focused on production; and Susan helmed sales. And as the winery grows, everyone continues to help with the harvest—even Jill’s small kids.

WHERE Edmonton THEIR STORY The family’s 2009 purchase of Cafe Mosaics, a preexisting vegan and vegetarian restaurant, was brought on by necessity. Thanh’s husband had passed away, leaving a bit of money, so the family decided to buy a restaurant they found in WKH FODVVL¿HGV ³,W ZDV D VDYLRXU IRU XV ´ VD\V .KX\HQ ³:H ZHUH DEOH WR SD\ WKH ELOOV ´ Luckily, Thanh’s, Jillian’s and Khuyen’s diverse skills helped the restaurant thrive: Thanh has an excellent palate and is able to create vegan versions of classic dishes; Jillian knows how to manage people and run back-end operations; and Khuyen takes on the front of house and business strategy. Last December, the women also opened The Moth Cafe, a vegan hot spot whose interior was designed by Khuyen (she has a master’s degree in architecture).

been a part of the Bigold family’s DNA for decades, it wasn’t until Carol decided to sell intricately iced cookies for a fundraiser that Belinda saw their popularity. “Mom was selling them for $3 a dozen because that was the cost of a bag of Oreos—she didn’t see that people would pay more for quality,” says Belinda with a laugh. They were so popular that people began to order them year after year. Belinda knew that her mom had always wanted to own her own business, and decided to give her a chance to further use her talents by opening High Tea Bakery in 2003 to sell the goodies—many from recipes handed down through the family. “The carrot cake recipe is from my husband’s great-auntie Virginia McPhee, and the lamington cake is from my aunt Eileen Hayward,” says Carol. Now, High Tea Bakery crafts some of the most beautiful sweet treats in Winnipeg. ON THAT FIRST YEAR “On opening day, we made $12.32 and thought, Woohoo, we’re awesome,” says Belinda. “We had nine cookie varieties when we started. I don’t know how we survived.”

resilience Life can deal us some pretty heavy blows. Sometimes, it pulls the rug right out from under us. But the key to happiness, success and, ultimately, survival is resilience. Here’s how FedEx Express Canada president Lisa Lisson leaped over obstacles and learned this unsung secret of life. TEXT LISA VAN DE GEYN

Those who weather the storm and survive getting punched in the gut and hit upside the head eventually come out the other side, after the EDWWOH UHDG\ WR ¿JKW DQRWKHU GD\ In a study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology in 2010, researchers found that adversity in life isn’t always a bad thing. In fact, people who experience some lifetime hardship have higher satisfaction levels and a more resilient response to stress compared WR ERWK WKRVH ZKR VX̆HU KLJK OHYHOV RI DGYHUVLW\ and those who never experience tragedy. That is to say, what doesn’t kill you really does make you stronger. Similarly, in 2013, the Association for Psychological Science in Washington found that withstanding short periods of adversity can help one better cope with stress. In short, resilience isn’t something we’re born with; it requires mastering. Those who practise self-care and optimism, rely on a social circle for help and support and 52 | CANADIAN LIVING MAY 2018

child (all too young to know this was the end) kissed him goodbye, and then she took them to the fair. The next night, she returned to the hospital, crawled into bed with the love of her life and held him as he died in her arms. It was August 2009. It would’ve been understandable for Lisa to fall apart, and there were moments when she didn’t know how she’d persevere. “It didn’t KDSSHQ RYHUQLJKW EXW , KDG WR ÂżQG UHVLOLHQFH I realized that if I was going to survive, I had to WDNH D GL̆HUHQW DSSURDFK WR KRZ , WKRXJKW P\ life was going to turn out.â€? Surviving made her stronger than ever. She threw her heart into her kids and her career, and she thrived. Nearly three years after Patrick’s heart attack, and a year after he died, /LVD ZDV PDGH WKH ÂżUVW IHPDOH SUHVLGHQW RI FedEx Express Canada. “Instead of focusing on what I didn’t have, I focused on what I did: four kids, family, friends and supportive colleagues,â€? she says. “I surround myself with people, places and things that inspire me. Today, I continue to look ahead, never behind.â€?
Resilience isn’t always about overcoming trauma or tragedy. Hardships come in various forms: a lack of motivation, a job loss, aging parents, a difficult colleague or a goal that seems forever out of reach. Here’s how Lisa Lisson learned to defeat obstacles.

Lisa was positive from the get-go. The night of Patrick’s heart attack, it took 45 minutes for ďŹ rst responders to get a pulse. By the time he got to the hospital, she was told it didn’t look good. But she remained positive, believing he’d pull through. Channelling positivity allowed Lisa to keep a clear mind, consider the choices before her and make the best decisions for Patrick and her family.
“When I left the hospital, I trained my mind to put whatever happened while I was visiting Patrick aside. I moved it into its own compartment and told myself, ‘Now I’m going to be with my kids’ or ‘Now I’m going to meet a friend for wine,’ � says Lisa. “You need to park it in the back of your mind, not carry any guilt and allow yourself to move on and come back to it when you need to.�
“Thinking about the past and worrying about the future was robbing me of the beauty around me,� says Lisa. So she practised being in the moment and coached herself to leave the past behind her and not to get too caught up in what the future might hold. Living in 24-hour increments will ground you and keep you from feeling overwhelmed.

The Broken Girls toggles between 2014 Vermont, where reporter Fiona Sheridan investigates mysterious goings-on at the longdeserted girls’ school Idlewild Hall, and 1950, in which some of the students detail the events leading up to the disappearance of one of their own. And, of course, through it all looms a vengeful ghost who haunts the campus. —SM
Dania Tomlinson blurs the lines between truth and fairy tale in her evocative debut novel set in the wilderness of British Columbia at the turn of the 20th century. The Happiness Curve
The concept of a midlife crisis has sparked endless discussions, analysis and sitcom plots. This book pitches a new way of looking at it, as author Jonathan Rauch explores the idea that well-being is really more like a U-shaped continuum: Our sense of joy in youth declines with age, responsibility and predictability to become dissatisfaction at the bottom of the U in midlife, then it rises again as we continue to age into a richer, more contented state. That slump, Rauch maintains, is natural and necessary for us to reevaluate our priorities. I have to admit, I’m intrigued. —SM

This month, we’re highlighting May’s two big celebrations with a shout-out to one of the most formidable mothers in history. Queen Victoria reigned for more than 63 years, had nine children (most of whom she saw married off to other European royal families), staved off at least seven assassination attempts, fearlessly adopted new technology (she was the first reigning monarch to be photographed—and to ride a train!), journaled constantly, ushered the British Empire into the 20th century and, despite the myths, was frequently amused, and not really very Victorian at all. Jess Kidd’s sharply realized and wry characters are the best parts of this novel that quickly turns into one helluva mystery when it’s revealed that Mr. Flood might have a secret of his own. Land Mammals and Sea Creatures FICTION (ECW PRESS) BY JEN NEALE, $19.
Twenty-something Julie returns to the small town she grew up in to take FDUH RI KHU IDWKHU ZKR VX̆HUV IURP PTSD, and almost immediately, weird things start happening; among them, animals appear to be committing suicide, her father is experiencing drastic behavioural changes and a Jerry Lee Lewis impersonator shows up out of nowhere. I loved this novel for its stark and honest approach to grief, independence and familial love, and the opening scene of a majestic, but ultimately doomed, blue whale had me hooked. —AD
OUR STAFF REVIEWERS Alexandra Donaldson loves reading literary ďŹ ction, essay collections, dark humour, Canadian authors and magical realism. This, and the fact that she’s one of our resident fashion editors, makes her the closest thing we have to Belle from Beauty and the Beast. Amanda Etty has an affinity for nail-biting thrillers and smart, funny books written by smart, funny women. She’s always on the hunt for her next favourite novel, although she’s currently working her way through a stack of parenting books (toddlers, right?). Suzanne Moutis almost always has her nose in a book, be it Golden Age mystery, Second World War history or Hollywood tell-all. She unapologetically loves Regency romances and young adult ďŹ ction but atly refuses to read anything that will make her cry.

My aunt had lupus. Is it hereditary, and what are my chances of getting it?
Dr. Jerome says “Lupus is an autoimmune disease that afects approximately one in 1,000 Canadians, most commonly females between the ages of 15 and 45. In simple terms, when the immune system mistakenly produces antibodies against the body’s own tissue, it can cause inflammation in the skin, joints, kidneys, brain and other systems. Symptoms vary depending on what organ or system is impacted but typically include swollen joints, pain in the chest when breathing and ulcers in the mouth and nose. Although there is no cure, various medications work to treat and control the disease. It’s a complex illness, with age, ethnicity, gender and family history being factors that can determine whether it develops. Studies have shown that 0.4 to five percent of close relatives of lupus patients—a parent or sibling—may themselves develop lupus. While this may sound frightening, the odds of not having lupus when someone else in the family has it are at least 95 percent or greater.” 62 | CANADIAN LIVING MAY 2018

Should I be concerned about hypertension when I enter menopause?
Dr. Harvey says “Hypertension occurs when blood pressure gets too high—140/90 or above, while 130/85 is considered prehypertension. Over time, hypertension damages the walls of the blood vessels, allowing plaque to accumulate, narrowing the arteries and, potentially, leading to cardiovascular diseases and kidney damage. Hypertension used to be a concern mainly for older women after menopause; what’s alarming is we’re seeing more cases with people as young as in their 20s, due to a diet high in processed foods and salt, being overweight, leading a sedentary lifestyle and experiencing disrupted sleep. A woman’s blood pressure can vary across her lifespan and increases with age; the lowest readings are from puberty to menopause, with a possible spike during pregnancy or when using a contraceptive pill.”

Do you have any tips for seasonal allergy relief at this time of year?
Dr. Leith says “Spring allergens usually include tree and mould pollens, while reactions to grass and weed pollen can begin early in summer, depending on the climate and length of season. Pollen can trigger a host of symptoms, including itchy eyes, a runny nose, congestion and sneezing. Another common allergen is the fungus alternaria, which can cause hay fever or lead to asthma. There are nonmedical solutions to provide some relief from pollen allergies, such as minimizing exposure to the outdoors and keeping windows in your home and car closed and the air-conditioning on. Many prescription medications, such as antihistamines, anti-allergy eyedrops and intranasal steroid sprays, may be considered. Maria Killam is not afraid to decorate with colour. In fact, her whole design philosophy hinges on hues. Clients Crystal and Rob Hasell appreciate the designerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s generous servings of colour so much that they came back for seconds. Âł7KH\ÂśG KLUHG PH ÂżYH \HDUV DJR WR GHFRUDWH WKHLU summer house,â&#x20AC;? says Killam. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They loved the look and feel of what I did there so much, they came to enjoy being in that space more than their main home.â&#x20AC;? So, in 2016, the couple re-enlisted Killam to help them with the renovation of their family home in Chilliwack, B.C., where they live with their two young children. The circa-2007 EXLOG RĚ&#x2020;HUHG D JUHDW ORFDWLRQ ZLWK EUHDWKWDNLQJ views of the Chilliwack River Valley, but the homeowners had fallen out of love with some tonal elements theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d selected 10 years prior, QDPHO\ WKH HVSUHVVR EURZQ ÂżQLVKHV Aiming to give the family a fun and cozy look that would stand the test of time, Killam embarked on an esthetic freshening-up. The GHVLJQHU VWDUWHG ZLWK FODVVLF ÂżQLVKHV LQFOXGLQJ SDOH KDUGZRRG Ă&#x20AC;RRUV DQG FOHDQ ZKLWH FDELQHWU\ to create a blank canvas for statement colours. And what a statement she made. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was such a fun project,â&#x20AC;? says Killam, who let loose with hits of vivacious green and fresh blue, which playfully call to the homeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s surrounding trees and river. She also incorporated touches of bold pattern, contributing to the interiorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s unique character.
