WHERE SHE STARTED My pregnancies were difficult. I was on bed rest while carrying my firstborn, Dexter, from 20 weeks on. I put on about 30 pounds—and didn’t lose it after his birth. Then, when I was pregnant with Elliot, I was afraid to exercise because my first pregnancy had been so difficult. After I had Elliot in March 2012, I weighed about 210 pounds. Initially, I wasn’t weighing myself, so I wasn’t entirely sure of the number—and I didn’t really want to know. Though I’m a tall person who carries weight well, I felt tired all of the time and wasn’t happy with how I looked. I couldn’t get down on the floor to play with my kids—I didn’t have the stamina. I thought, You have to shape up. There was no lightbulb moment. It was more about wanting to be active so I could be there for my boys (I lost my mom when I was 21).
