STILL

This issue we’re proud to be celebrating the 45th anniversary of Canadian Living magazine. It was in December 1975 that we debuted in supermarkets across the country with a mandate to inspire and inform readers in all things lifestyle, from food to fashion, DIYs to destination travel, human interest to holiday decorating. To date, that’s more than 500 issues packed full of all the things you love! Together, in that time, we’ve witnessed the signing of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, the recognition of a new territory, the closing of residential schools and the work of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, the legalization of same-sex marriage and marijuana, the birth—and death—of some of our PRVW WUHDVXUHG FXOWXUDO LFRQV WKH ¿UVW IHPDOH SULPH minister, the determination and grit of the phenomenal Terry Fox. We’ve watched Canada host the Olympic Games, witnessed the referendums, the trade deals, the scandals, protests and mass shootings, the toll of SARS and COVID-19, the arrival of Y2K, the interQHW VPDUWSKRQHV VRFLDO PHGLD 1HWÀL[ PHWRR DQG

EODFNOLYHVPDWWHU 7RJHWKHU ZHœYH GHOYHG D OLWWOH GHHSHU LQWR WKH LVVXHV WKDW D̆HFW RXU FRXQWU\ DQG shared some clarity and compassion about the way we all see the world. This year, we’re all well aware, has been like no other. And yet, as the holidays approach and we’re baking cookies, wrapping presents or decorating the tree, listening to kids sing carols or watching our favourite seasonal movies, we’ll still feel the holiday magic. This is a time when we tend to look back as much as ahead, and it’s important to note that we’re all still here, still adapting, still moving forward, still R̆HULQJ WKDQNV DQG SHUKDSV PRVW LPSRUWDQWO\ VWLOO doing it all together. We’re all in for at least another 45 years. How about you? Wishing you all the peace and joy of the season.

Long-time beauty brand Marcelle recently launched a new addition to its website that offers full transparency about the company’s rigorous product-testing practices and educational information on how products are made, as well as why Canadians can feel safe using them. And that’s why we’re so enthusiastic about Marcelle’s newest anti-aging cream, which is formulated to meet specific concerns of customers over the age of 50 and dermatologist-approved.

Is there anything more relaxing than taking a long hot bath? We think not. So when you add the Magnesium Bali Bath Soak from Wyld to the water, your bath will go from relaxing to luxurious. As you soak, your skin will soften and become more hydrated, plus you’ll absorb your daily dose of magnesium chloride. The blend of coconut milk with lemongrass and rosemary essential oils will mentally transport you to that tropical paradise you probably didn’t get to visit this year—sigh!

HAPPY

FEET

If you’re in the market for a new pair of boots, you’ll be totally impressed by La Canadienne’s selection of elegant and durable premium Italian leather footwear. The Montreal-based company prides itself on a mandate to make highquality footwear that will stand the test of time, both functionally and fashionably. Our favourite style is the Margaret, with its classic, minimalist appeal and practical treaded rubber sole—perfect for whatever Mother Nature brings us this winter! La Canadienne Margaret BOOTS, $525, lacanadienneshoes.com.

RESPONSIBLE WRAPPING Did you know that the average Canadian household produces approximately 25 to 45 percent more waste during the holiday season than it does in other months of the year? A lot of that comes from single-use gift wrapping. So this year, try something different: Start saving newspapers and flyers and use them as truly recyclable wrapping; use tea towels or fabric remnants tied up with string; purchase reusable fabric gift bags; or, if you’re receiving storebought non-recyclable paper, unwrap it carefully and save it to use again and again. The Earth will have a happier holiday because of it, too!

8 9

LOTION IN MOTION The human body loses about one litre of water per hour of exercise, which is why it’s so important to hydrate. But what effect does that water loss have on your skin? Innovative technology from Under Armour solves the dry, itchy skin problem so many athletes face. The new UA Meridian + Moisture Infuse fabric—embedded with tiny moisturizing molecules that activate on contact with your body—is made to replenish the moisture your dermis loses while working out, without any sticky or slimy residue. All you can feel is soft material on comfortable limbs! Win-win! Under Armour Meridian + Moisture Infuse LEGGINGS in Black, $120, Long Sleeve TOP in Slate Purple, $120, underarmour.ca.

SHOWER POWER Canadian all-natural skin-care brand Maison Jacynthe has added a complete line of hair care to its collection of vegan, cruelty-free products. The Ayurvedic shampoo not only cleanses your hair, but also provides a therapeutic experience with its nourishing aromatic formulation that includes cedar, frankincense, patchouli, sandalwood, cloves and more. For an extra boost, try the Restoring Hair Balm as an overnight mask—its hint of vanilla scent is heavenly!

TEXT MADELEINE LAVIN

What excites you most about leading this holiday campaign? CO: Christmas! Coming up with the perfect gifts for the people you love, the colours, the twinkle lights. I hope people are fortunate enough to be able to enjoy this year, no matter which holiday they celebrate. It’s a joyful time that brings out the best in people and it’s important to connect with the ones you love. AM: I agree—and this campaign was also a huge treat for me, as I was able to keep spending time with Catherine!

What holiday traditions are you looking forward to? And how will this year be different for you? AM: I’m looking forward to coming home to Canada and spending time with my friends and family. I have one normal tradition and one not-so-normal one. The normal one is watching It’s A Wonderful Life

with my folks by the Christmas tree in front of the fire…and crying my eyes out. The other one is opening stockings with my extended family. There’s always a pair of underwear in each stocking, which has resulted in our annual underwear-on-the-head photo. The difference this year will be focusing on being together and that’s what I’m looking forward to the most. CO: My mom and dad came up with the best tradition and my husband and I repeated it with our kids. At bedtime on Christmas Eve my siblings and I would hear bells outside my parents’ bedroom window. My mom would say, “Santa’s here. He’s come early to bring you pajamas.” We’d hear her speaking to Santa—never knowing it was my dad!—then she’d come out, hand us our pj’s, we’d put them on and excitedly go to bed. This year, my hope is to be with my family and as many of my six

siblings as possible. We’ll also watch It’s A Wonderful Life, just like Annie and her family, and cry our eyes out.

Quicktime Qs— Christmas Style Favourite Holiday Music?

Catherine, as your Schitt’s Creek character Moira Rose, what gift from The Bay’s holiday collection would you give to Annie’s character, Alexis? CO: I think she’d appreciate the cozy Multistripe Hudson’s Bay Blanket after a long day of promoting others.

Annie, as Alexis, what would you gift Moira? AM: A board game…? I guess we could play a game together!

What’s on your Christmas list? AM: Getting my hands on a good coffee machine would be fantastic! CO: I’ve got a thing for the HBC stripes, so the Le Creuset Teapot and maybe some mittens!

AM: A Charlie Brown Christmas soundtrack. CO: I love every carol! But I’ll go with “White Christmas” or “What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve?”

Mittens or Gloves? CO & AM: Mittens.

Turkey or Tourtière? AM & CO: Turkey.

Fruitcake or Mincemeat Pie? CO: Mincemeat pie. AM: I’m going to go with just a classic shortbread. CO: I’ll change to something I make every year, sticky toffee pudding.

Hot Chocolate or Eggnog? AM: Hot chocolate, oh my gosh. I have a hard time even saying eggnog! CO: Homemade eggnog…with booze. Or better yet, Brandy Alexander!

Ever heard of maskne? Breakouts on the chin and cheeks are more common these days because of constant mask-wearing. If you’re noticing more irritation, a change to your skin-care and makeup routines may be in order. You can turn to soothing ingredients like aloe vera, bisabolol and allantoin, as well as vitamins (B5, C and E) with antioxidant properties, all found in Pro-Derm’s Hydrogel moisturizer. Rich yet light, it’s perfect for protecting the skin underneath that face covering.

LIP SERVICE Before the pandemic, if you wanted to create a custom lipstick at Lip Lab by Bite Beauty, you had to make your way to Toronto. But now personalizing your colour can be done from the comfort of your own home! Book a 30-minute online session with a Lip Lab Colour Expert who will help you select your shade, finish and scent, plus have your lipstick case engraved. Then it’ll be delivered to your door anywhere in Canada. How easy—and fun—is that?

DIY

Bold & Beautiful Deep shades like burgundy, blue and even black add a rich accent to winter styles. Depending on how you wear them, these colours can be dressed down for a casual aesthetic or dressed up for a dramatic look. Plus, dark greys and forest greens are easier to wear than you think.

Want to add a little whimsy to your manicure? Try nail art! You can easily find tutorials online for DIY designs. Nail patches are great for people who have little experience in applying nail art. The patches are super easy to use and you can play around with different sizes and shapes to create a unique look. Simply place on your nails as the polish dries, then finish with a dense top coat. Et voilà!

motivation of the month EMBRACE WINTER

PHOTOGRAPHY, ISTOCKPHOTO

Popularized in the mid-19th century by Norwegian poet and playwright Henrik Ibsen, the concept of friluftsliv roughly translates to “open-air living,” and is a way of connecting to the natural world. But it’s more than simply an activity; it’s a lifestyle, and best of all, anyone can adopt it. It’s as effortless as going outside and appreciating your surroundings. The feelings related to friluftsliv are found among outdoorsy people all over the world, so get on board and don’t let winter bring you down! As the Scandinavian saying goes, “There’s no bad weather, only bad clothing.”

health hack of the month FROM A TO ZINC After iron, zinc is the most abundant trace mineral in the human body—it isn’t naturally produced, so it must be acquired through food or supplements. Dietary zinc is associated with proper immune function, among countless other essential processes, meaning a deficiency can lead to a weakened immune response. Zinc supplementation has the potential to significantly reduce the risk of infections and promote immune response by boosting the activity of T-cells and natural killer cells, especially in older adults. Because of its critical role in immunity, zinc is often added to nasal sprays, lozenges and other natural cold treatments.

Cranberry CRAVING

’Tis the season for this festive fruit! Familiar to us in delicious sauces or jellies on holiday tables, cranberries can also be eaten raw in salads, baked into breads DQG PẊQV RU VLSSHG DV MXLFH 1DWLYH WR WKH EDQNV RI PDUVKHV DQG ZHWODQGV LQ QRUWKHDVWHUQ 1RUWK $PHULFD WKH EHUULHV DUH KDUYHVWHG ZKHQ WKH\ ÀRDW WR WKH VXUIDFH RI WKH ZDWHU LQ WKH IDOO DQG DUH H[SRVHG WR PRUH GLUHFW VXQOLJKW ZKLFK DGGV WR WKHLU QXWULWLRQDO YDOXH 7KLV WDUW VXSHUIRRG LV IXOO RI KHDOWKIXO YLWDPLQV PLQHUDOV DQG RWKHU SRZHUIXO SK\WRQXWULHQWV TEXT MADELEINE LAVIN

guard against inflammation and offer protection against disease. Research indicates their phytonutrients may lower levels of bad cholesterol while increasing good cholesterol, decrease stiffness in blood vessels and lower blood pressure. Rich in vitamins C and E, cranberries’ antioxidants help boost the immune system and can protect against chronic conditions like cardiovascular disease and cancer. They also contain significant amounts of salicylic acid, a component of aspirin. Regular consumption of cranberries can increase absorption of dietary salicylic acid in the body; salicylic acid has anti-inflammatory effects that may help reduce swelling and prevent blood clots.

• Bacteria Blockers: Distinct from

other berries, cranberries’ bioactive compounds are rich in A-type proanthocyanidins (PACs), in contrast to the B-type PACs present in most other fruit. Also called condensed

60 | CANADIAN LIVING DECEMBER 2020

tannins, these A-type PACs seem to be responsible for the fruits’ efficacy as a natural antimicrobial, and may have the potential to prevent biofilm formation, the precursor to an infection, by blocking bacteria from attaching to cells in the body. This explains why cranberries have long been upheld as a preventive treatment for urinary tract infections (UTIs). UTIs are among the most common bacterial infections, especially among women, and cranberries’ PACs may prevent the intestinal bacterium E. coli from adhering to the lining of the bladder and urinary tract. These unique plant compounds have also been found to prevent the bacterium Helicobacter pylori (a major cause of stomach cancer, stomach inflammation and ulcers) from attaching to the lining of the stomach, and to prevent bacteria in the mouth like the cavity-causing Streptococcus mutans from sticking to the teeth.

• Mighty Microbiome: The food we eat not only nourishes our bodies but also feeds beneficial bacteria in the intestines, our microbiome. Prebiotics are molecules we eat but cannot digest; they may promote the growth and health of microorganisms in our digestive system. Special sugars contained in cranberries’ cell walls, called xyloglucans, can’t be digested by the human body itself; however, beneficial bacteria in our intestines can break down these sugars into useful molecules and feed our microbiome. Other compounds derived from cranberries, such as salicylate, are also associated with beneficial modulation of human gut microbiota. Cranberries may help enrich the microbiota of the gut by increasing populations of bacteria like Bacteroidaceae, generally regarded as important members of a healthy microbiome, while reducing populations of E. coli, which are associated with Crohn’s disease and inflammatory bowel disease.

Take... Vitamin D

The sunshine vitamin can help kick start your immune system by managing antibody production in white blood cells and by regulating the production of a protein that kills harmful bacteria and viruses, says Dr. Michael Holick, an endocrinologist and expert in vitamin D research from Boston University. “Everyone should be taking vitamin D supplementation since it’s not possible to obtain enough from sun exposure or from diet,â€? says Dr. Holick. He recommends taking a vitamin D supplement yearround, but particularly during the winter, when the days are darker and we’re not getting as much of the sunshine vitamin naturally. SEASONAL SWINGERS These elegant hanging decorations are perfect when displayed in windows, in a nook or on a living room wall. •

1•

Natural Knickknacks Nature’s bounty provides plenty of easily collected materials to design superb creations. Dried eucalyptus branches make a beautiful hanging bouquet (you can also use rosemary, fir branches or flowers). A few small twigs glued together form a tree shape, and walnuts and ground cherries can be strung together with decorative thread to create a chain. •

2•

Memory Mobile

1•

2•

This eye-catching hanging decoration highlights holidays past with a collection of antique and travel finds, childhood mementoes and family heirlooms. All that’s required is a sturdy branch, ribbons of varying lengths to hang your souvenirs, glue to secure the objects to the branch itself and a long piece of twine to suspend this piece from the wall or ceiling.

3•

4•

O TANNENBAUM The traditional Christmas tree is the pièce de résistance of any holiday decorating scheme—its iconic shape can form the base of creations with unexpected looks that are just as impactful as the real thing. •

3•

Mini Tree For the traditionalist, this beautiful little lemon cypress keeps its foliage through the winter. Decorate with paper or rattan spheres, small Styrofoam balls coated with glitter and cinnamon sticks for a charming accent. Perfect for sprucing up any small space! •

4•

Wooden Tree Begin by drawing up the plan for your tree to determine the number and length of boards needed for the branches. Assemble using nails or wood screws on a board that will support the whole form—this will serve as the trunk— then add a few shelves for your decorations. As a final touch, drill as many holes as possible to thread LED lights through; bring the lights to the front, allowing the cords to remain invisible at the back of the tree. CANADIAN LIVING DECEMBER 2020 | 79

5•

Tree Shelf Decorative and practical, this shelf can be used to store ornaments and small gifts without taking up too much space. Construct this piece out of three wooden planks of different lengths, 3/8-inch-thick sisal rope and a large hook. First, sand the surfaces of the planks and apply white acrylic paint with a dry brush for a bleached “driftwood” effect, then apply a matte varnish. Drill a hole in each corner of the planks to thread through pieces of rope, starting with the bottom plank. Tie a knot below each hole to keep the planks in place. Tie the ropes together about 30 inches above the top shelf and hang on the hook. •

5•

6•

8•

9•

11 •

GRACEFUL GARLAND Whether suspended from the ceiling, on a wall, along the fireplace mantel or around the branches of the tree, a holiday garland is always at home. •

6•

Orange-Cinnamon Swag This aromatic garland brings holiday fragrance to the fore. Simply cut oranges into thin slices and dry them on a baking sheet in the oven at 170°F for about five hours, turning occasionally. Let the slices cool completely before threading them onto fishing wire or rope, interspersing them with cinnamon sticks.

AROUND THE TREE Trimming the tree is a classic holiday tradition. Whether you have a natural or artificial version, these decorations don’t disappoint. •

7•

Bold Baubles Begin by opening the top of your ornament. In each glass or plastic ball add a little mixture of pouring medium (such as Mod Podge) and the coloured glitter of your choice, turning to coat. You can also try this with combinations of different colours of acrylic paint. Reattach the top, let the ball dry and it’s ready to hang. •

8•

Gorgeous Giftwrap Personalize gifts under the tree by making your own wrapping paper. Using stamps or your own designs, apply images and text to kraft paper to create your own unique look. Tie with ribbons made from natural fabrics or raffia for an organic esthetic. 80 | CANADIAN LIVING DECEMBER 2020

ON THE TABLE Wow your guests with charming tabletop ideas. From place markers to party favours, we’ve got you covered! •

9•

Sweet Cones Create this simple party favour using fauxwood patterned paper (like scrapbook paper). Fashion into a cone shape and secure with double-sided tape, then fill with chocolates or sweet treats of your choice. It’s as delightful to receive as it is easy to make. •

7•

Lush Lights A quick and easy DIY, these candleholders add a magical flourish to any table setting. All you need are white candlesticks, well-washed wine bottles, some ribbon or cord and sprigs of cedar, eucalyptus or other greenery. Arrange sprigs in wine bottles, allowing some to stick out the top, tie ribbon around the bottle’s neck and insert the candle into the top. Tip: Fill the bottles with water so the foliage lasts longer.

10 •

Write the names of your guests on label-sized parchment paper with a felt tip or calligraphy pen. Remove the metal cap from a transparent ball ornament, fill the ball with glitter and curls of ribbon. Roll the name tag tightly and insert into the ball, use the glitter and ribbon to hold it in place before replacing the metal cap. Try filling these balls with small sprigs of winter greenery for a natural feel.

COLOURFUL CHRISTMAS Tired of classic red and green holiday colour schemes? Add a bit of whimsy with bright blues and pastel pinks. •

12 •

Opalescent Opulence Finish off your creations with a cheerful touch using vibrant iridescent or metallic shades. Ball ornaments can be gathered in a newspaperlined basket and sprayed with different colours from a distance of about 10 inches. Tip: You’ll get the best results if the base coat is painted in a lighter shade than the top coats. CANADIAN LIVING DECEMBER 2020 | 81

ingredient of the month POMEGRANATES

PHOTOGRAPHY, TANGO. FOOD STYLING, NATALY SIMARD. PROP STYLING, CAROLINE SIMON

Pomegranates are known to be labour-intensive fruits because in order to consume them, you’ve got to do a lot of work to get at those tiny edible seeds. But the fruit of your labour will be more than just delicious—pomegranate seeds are rich in potassium and vitamin C, making them a nutritious snack as well. Widely used in baking, cooking, juice blends, smoothies and even cocktails, pomegranates are found in many traditional recipes around the world. To remove the seeds, cut the fruit in half, then submerge it in a bowl of water. Rub gently to loosen the seeds, which will fall to the bottom of the bowl; the pith and membrane will float to the top.

CRUNCHY & MAPLE FLAKES AND SUGAR PROVIDE ALL THE FLAVOUR YOU WANT—WITH THE ADDED BONUS OF VERSATILITY WHY MAPLE? Maple syrup is a Canadian favourite and a tasty addition to plenty of recipes. But did you know it’s also full of vitamins and minerals like zinc and manganese? For an easy way to incorporate maple into your recipe rotation, opt for maple flakes and maple sugar. The Maple Treat Corporation, part of Lantic Inc., uses an innovative dehydration process, so you get uniform and dry products that maintain flavour and offer great texture. So, whether you’re mixing it in or sprinkling it on top, you’re getting the maple quality you know and love.

HOW TO USE MAPLE FLAKES AND SUGAR Use it instead of regular sugar in cooking and baking. You can swap in maple sugar easily—no math needed—with a 1:1 ratio. Add it to your baking recipes, but don’t forget your savoury cooking too. Maple sugar can be added to dry rubs, sauces and marinades for a touch of sweetness.
