Erin Corwin, the wife of a U.S. Marine whom we wrote about in our Aug. 11, 2014, issue, expected a proposal from her alleged lover before she disappeared last June and was discovered nearly two months later at the bottom of a mine shaft near Joshua Tree National Park in California. At a pretrial hearing on April 2 for Chris Lee, her accused killer, prosecutors stated Corwin thought Lee was taking her to the desert to propose. “It apparently takes two hours just to get there,” she texted a friend. “The location is only half the surprise.” An autopsy revealed she was strangled with a homemade garrote, which was found next to her body, but it could not confirm whether Corwin was pregnant, because her body had decomposed.

ROBERT PATTINSON & FKA TWIGS BY JEFF NELSON
ROBERT PATTINSON IS READY FOR MARRIAGE— and maybe for the pitter-patter of little Pattinsons. The Twilight star recently popped the question to his girlfriend of six months, fellow Brit and singer FKA twigs, and multiple sources confirm to People: She said yes! “They get each other,” says a Pattinson insider. “Everyone is really glad he’s found someone who makes him so happy.” 20

Another source close to Pattinson adds that the couple are thinking of a late-summer ceremony, though the date is “not definite.” While the actor’s parents “would really like a church wedding,” twigs “wants something quite informal, like a pub wedding.” The Gloucestershire native, born Tahliah Barnett, is keen to start a family. “She really wants kids,” the source says.

This is your third time cohosting the show. What do you have planned? Luke: It’ll be an exciting night with a lot of big names. We’ll pay homage to many of the artists who paved the way for us. Blake: Yeah, for the 50th anniversary it’s a bigger deal than just us telling jokes. Any nerves? How do you calm them? Luke: Blake and I have an area backstage where we keep some spirits. Before the show, we’ll take a shot or two. Blake: And then we’ll take another shot of something after the show too! Is there anyone you won’t joke about? Luke: Jason Aldean is so sensitive. If I tell jokes about him, he calls me up and cries. Blake: And if you joke about Taylor Swift, her fans get really pissed off at you! What’ll be the best joke of the night? Luke: When Blake and I perform. Blake: Maybe we’ll even make out on the stage. It’ll go viral, in more ways than one. Luke: You mean virus. There’s no telling what I’d catch from you.

The actor, 48, joined forces with Fight Colorectal Cancer to honor his friends
Perry I lost a friend this year to colon with the cancer, and she had two small Schrack children. And my oldest friend family. Chad Schrack’s wife is a survivor of the disease. He asked me to help him, so I’m helping. It’s about raising awareness. I got involved with the Fight Colorectal Cancer “One Million Strong” campaign because I want people to be proactive about their health, to get information and go out there and get colonoscopies. Don’t worry about the stigma of it. Once I found out the numbers about this cancer—how detectable it is, and how lethal it is if you don’t detect it—it boggled my mind. I think if you gave people a choice of having a colonoscopy or having to have a tumor cut out of them, they would much rather have the colonoscopy. It needs to be put in those simple terms. Nurse Jackie
Edie Falco’s series about a nurse addicted to painkillers starts its final season with Jackie Peyton teetering once more on disaster. In retrospect, the show’s greatest strength, apart from the tacit pride in Falco’s refusal to ask for our pity, was the performances of Anna Deavere Smith, formidable and funny as supervisor Gloria Akalitis, and Merritt Wever as Zoey, a nurse who hopes for the best and, unlike Jackie, will probably never experience the worst. COMEDY Billy Crystal is in good form here— something like Larry David without so much of the agita of daily living. He’s a well-situated, very successful comedian (named Billy Crystal) paired up in a skit show with an edgy, selfimportant younger comedian played by (and named) Josh Gad. What’s inherently off in this setup is Gad/Gad. He’s a funny performer, but he’s not Russell Brand—he’s not even Uncle Leo from Seinfeld. And the “skits” we see aren’t much. But you should never underestimate Crystal’s way with a scene or a line. Self-effacing but pointed, he basically emcees the whole show. The one who’s flat-out funniest, though, may be Stephnie Weir as the duo’s neurotic producer. In an acting exercise with Gad, she starts off telling him, “Your grandma died,” then piles on detail after detail until she concludes: “Your bubbe exploded.” (FX, Thursdays, 10 p.m.)

The Best New Books A grammarian’s unstuffy memoir, an Americanized royal romp and a modern reinvention of an Austen classic EDITED BY KIM HUBBARD
Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan The Royal We NOVEL The characters should
all be familiar: the heir to the British throne, his mischievous younger brother, his granny and the pretty commoner he meets in college. But in this version by bloggers Cocks and Morgan (a.k.a. the Fug Girls), the girl is American. Nick and Bex’s love story is so fun and dishy, you’ll hope for a sequel—with royal babies.
Alexander McCall Smith Emma: A Modern Retelling NOVEL McCall Smith brings
all the wit and deft characterization of his No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series to this reimagining of Jane Austen’s classic. Now a modern university grad, Emma is still the spoiled yet irrepressible girl whose meddling backfires; the lessons and pleasures of her tale are timeless.
Mary Norris Between You & Me
MEMOIR Fun and grammar are two words that don’t often appear in the same sentence, but Norris, who’s spent the past three decades working for The New Yorker’s copy department, has an enthusiasm for the proper use of language that’s contagious. Her memoir is so engaging, in fact, that it’s easy to forget you’re learning things. Advice on the perfect pencil (the Blackwing), why there’s a hyphen in Moby-Dick— it all goes down easy. And you’ll never say “between you and I” again.

Reba, Love Somebody
CURTIS HILBUN/AFF
The country queen continues to rule No. COUNTRY Reba’s 27th studio album has a little something for everyone. There are both classic country ballads (“She Got Drunk Last Night,” about a woman broken by loneliness) and modern country party anthems (the single “Going Out Like That,” about a woman declaring herself unbreakable). But Reba seems most at home with the songs that fall comfortably somewhere in the middle of those extremes. Her brassy tone shines on the sassy “Until They Don’t Love You,” her storytelling skills deliver in the quietly emotional “Love Land,” and her raspy vocals blend beautifully with those of her pal Jennifer Nettles on “Enough.” That song ends with Reba expressing the wish that “I still was enough.” Well, Reba, you are—and then some. ALT-ROCK On their second album, the folk-tinged band perfects the haunting, melancholy sound introduced on Lonesome Dreams: Over plangent guitars, Ben Schneider sings about love and life in a soft but urgent voice tugged toward regret and remembrance. It’s all seductively atmospheric: We could be in a forest in which spirit walkers, young troubadours and hip baristas wander among the trees. The lyrics need a little work: “I speak to birds and tell them where to fly.” Oh, is that so? But this is a lovely album.

Meet the men who shaped rock gods the Who DOCUMENTARY Workingclass Chris Stamp and posh Kit Lambert thought they’d take over mid-’60s London by making movies. By some brilliant accident, they did it by managing the Who. Lacking cash and experience but brimming with brass and gall, the duo turned the rough-hewn band into rock legends. Naturally, it all fell apart. Interviews with Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend are refreshingly revealing, as is footage of Lambert, who died in 1981. But Stamp adds the narrative snap: A natural raconteur, he dishes about rock, art and the magical youthquake that was. What fun it is to hear him talking ’bout his generation. (April 3, R)

But being alone with his daughters for the first time without any nannies made Brooks feel “lost as last year’s Easter egg,” he says. “I’d just stare at them. I knew their sweet faces and their dispositions. But I didn’t know who they were.” A strict disciplinarian, Brooks had plenty of rules—like no Facebook until you were 18—but life under his roof was also filled with lots of fun. The singer also still holds the record as the bestselling solo artist in history, besting even Elvis. Brooks admits he’s been overjoyed at fan response to his comeback, but he is also confident he made the right choice back in 2000 when he decided to retire and focus on being a full-time father to Taylor, August and Allie, his daughters from his first marriage, to Sandy Mahl. “People said, ‘How could you walk away from music?’ ” Brooks says. “But being a dad—there’s nothing that can touch that.” At the time, much of Brooks’s life was in turmoil. His mom, Colleen, had recently died from cancer, his marriage to Mahl, his college sweetheart, was ending, and his oldest daughter was mimicking her nannies’ accents, making the singer realize “that someone else was raising her,” he recalls. “Everything was telling me I need to be there for my children.”

And if something goes wrong, she can come home.” àAlways set consequences “We had an agreement that if their grades dropped, their cell phones got taken away.”

“I took the oldest one’s head and just put it right down [into the plate],” he says, laughing. “They ate like dogs and had the best time.” The tradition would serve as a handy icebreaker when Brooks and Yearwood began dating. During her first meal with the brood, “Taylor reached over, took Trisha’s head, and before I knew it, bam!” says Brooks. “The whole table went silent. We were like, ‘Oh crap.’ Yearwood was fantastic, though. She came up with a noodle across her forehead and popped little Auggie’s head right down. It was on from there!” (The couple married at the ranch in 2005.) Brooks flourished as his life centered on packing school lunches (he would tuck handwritten notes in each one), doing chores at the ranch
and shuttling between the girls’ after-school activities. “You start being a part of the community,” he says. “The dads across the soccer field looked at me as a dad just like them. The saying is, as long as your babies are healthy, everything else you can deal with. If they have D’s, if they flunk, you deal with it. You can introduce them to the Lord, teach them manners, teach them to believe in themselves, but the truth is, they’re going to be who they’re going to be.”
is attending college in Nashville—Brooks admits he’s suffering a bit from empty-nest syndrome. “I am in the period now where I think I pray more than I ever have in my life,” he says. “Because for some reason when they were under my roof, I felt like I might have had some control, you know?” His relationship with Yearwood has been his saving grace. “Thank God I’m with the love of my life,” he says. “That’s why I know I’m right where I’m supposed to be.” The pair are selling their house in Oklahoma and building a new one in Nashville, both to ease their return to the music business and to be near Allie. “We just thought, ‘Well, this is a way we kind of don’t have to let go of her,’ ” the singer says. BILLIONAIRE FAMILY TRAGEDY

Found dead in his L.A. mansion, eccentric heir Andrew Getty becomes the latest in his ultrarich family to meet a dark end those plans would go unfulfilled. On March 31 the 47-year-old grandson of oil tycoon J. Paul Getty was found dead, bleeding in the bathroom hallway of his Hollywood Hills mansion. His body
was discovered by an ex-girlfriend, Lanessa DeJonge, against whom Getty had sought a restraining order two weeks earlier, claiming that DeJonge refused to leave his house. But police say they do not believe foul play was involved in Getty’s death, and L.A. county coroner’s assistant chief Ed Winter told People the cause was “probably gastrointestinal bleeding.” Getty had problems with drugs in the past, according to sources, and suffered from dangerously high blood pressure. Winter said that prescription drugs

orn into one of America’s wealthiest families, Andrew Getty could afford to indulge his passions: He wanted to make gory horror movies. He wanted to write the world’s longest palindrome (a phrase that reads the same forward and backward). He wanted to buy a flying car like one he had seen on YouTube. And he wanted to visit Costa Rica this month. Says his friend Alisha Lucero: “We were talking about April to see the waterfalls.” But like much in Getty’s peculiar life,

were found at the scene but he believed Getty had been sober “for some time.” The sad end is the latest in a long series of tragedies to befall the legendary Getty family, which built its multibilliondollar dynasty on oil-field fortunes (see sidebar). For Andrew, that wealth “attracted people that shouldn’t be around,” says his friend Elan Morrison. A rotating group of houseguests shared room in his sprawling home with his collection of puppets, skulls and even the skeleton of a prehistoric bird. “He was addicted to troubled women,” says another friend, Noelle Leanne. “He had this hero thing, so he would always try to help people. He was a playboy who had a big heart.” But he was haunted by his family’s demons. He talked to friends about his cousin John Paul Getty III’s kidnapping and death threats he said his family had gotten. “He was paranoid and afraid of being alone,” Leanne says. Less businessfocused than his forebears, he pursued a career as a director, ‘He was sinking $6 million into a horror film, addicted to troubled The Storyteller, that went unreleased. women. He bought LEANNE, closets full of garFRIEND ments online and asked female guests to model them for him. In 2002 his then-girlfriend Tara Kersch painted a dark picture of Getty in a request for a restraining order, alleging that he was addicted to crystal meth and had threatened to kill her. He “ate and drank whatever the hell he wanted,” says Leanne. “He didn’t go out much. He would bring the party home. It was a purely indulgent lifestyle.” And yet “he wasn’t just this oil tycoon baby,” says Morrison. “He saw people who were down and wanted to fix them. I know he wanted his own family. I think he never found what he was looking for.” By Michelle Tauber. With Michael Miller and Christine Pelisek in Los Angeles and Elizabeth McNeil in New York City
A Dynasty’s Scandals & Tragedies J. PAUL GETTY Once known as the world’s richest private citizen, he made his fortune in the oil business. Notorious as a miser and philanderer, he married and divorced five women and even installed a pay phone in his mansion. He died in 1976.
GEORGE FRANKLIN GETTY J. Paul’s oldest son died of a lethal mix of drugs and alcohol—a probable suicide—in 1973.
SIR JOHN PAUL GETTY JR. J. Paul’s jet-setting son and his wife, model Talitha Pol, posed for this 1969 photo in Morocco. Pol died in 1971 of a heroin overdose, and Getty Jr. battled addiction and depression before his 2003 death.
JOHN PAUL GETTY III When he was kidnapped as a teen by Italian gangsters, his grandpa J. Paul refused to pay ransom until his captors cut off his ear and put it in the mail. A 1981 drug overdose left him a quadriplegic. He died in 2011.
AILEEN GETTY Once wed to Elizabeth Taylor’s son Christopher Wilding (above), J. Paul’s granddaughter struggled with addiction and contracted HIV but has been sober nine years. She founded charities Gettlove, aiding the homeless, and the Aileen Getty Foundation, for community and environmental causes.
GORDON GETTY Andrew’s philanthropist dad weathered scandal in 1999 when it was revealed he had three kids out of wedlock, but he stayed married to wife Ann.
BALTHAZAR GETTY J. Paul’s actor greatgrandson separated from his wife, Rosetta, after an affair with actress Sienna Miller in 2008, but the pair later reconciled.

But I have a difficult time swimming there.” Indeed, despite the playfully titled memoir and the new apartment (purchased after she lived out of hotels and corporate apartments for two years while Hoppy stayed in their home), Frankel says it’s hard for her to be completely happy without love. “Everybody would think all I ever wanted was success. This week he makes his leading-man debut in The Longest Ride, based on Nicholas Sparks’s romantic novel. “I’ve been acting for 12 years,” he says. “People think I just started, and I laugh. I said I would give myself 10 years, and if it didn’t work out, I would be a firefighter or something. And things just sort of took off.” His Hollywood Legacy
Born in Monterey, Calif., to his Oscarwinning father, Clint, now 84 (the Hollywood legend has seven kids), and flight attendant Jacelyn Reeves, Eastwood spent his childhood being “dragged around to movie sets,” he recalls, and later acted in his dad’s Gran Torino and Flags of Our Fathers. Among other plum upcoming roles, he costars in Oliver Stone’s Edward Snowden biopic and signed on to the all-star cast of the supervillain film Suicide Squad. “I like manly movies,” he says, “but sprinkled in with comedy and movies that really touch people.” His role models include Leonardo DiCaprio and George Clooney for their “smart choices.” But his ultimate inspiration is close to home: “My father is my No. 1 biggest hero.”

(Panabaker re-covered the chairs “to give them a little texture.”) In previous apartments, “everything was from Ikea,” says the CW actress, 27. “I started from scratch here to make a place I loved.” —LYNETTE RICE

Michael WEATHERLY THE NCIS ACTOR’S LIGHT-FILLED LIVING ROOM FEATURES VAULTED CEILINGS AND A FIREPLACE, PLUS FURNITURE THAT’S KID (AND DOG!) FRIENDLY “The key is that everything has to be able to get thrown up on or crayoned,” NCIS’s Michael Weatherly says of his pretense-free decorating philosophy. With two dogs and two young kids—Olivia, 3, and Liam, 17 months—“we’re not precious about stuff.” The CBS star, 46, and his wife, Bojana Jankovic, a physician, 34, moved into their four-bedroom, 4,000-sq.-ft. Hollywood home (designed by noted L.A. architect Fred Smathers) shortly after their daughter was born. The major selling point? “It feels warm,” he says. “Not formal, but it can dress up nice.” One of his favorite spaces is the airy living room, which features “impossibly comfortable, marshmallow-like” seating clustered in a “social circle.” And despite all the windows, “it’s not a place that’s about the view,” says the actor. “It’s not showy in that way. It’s about having family and friends together.” —GABRIELLE OLYA HAIR & MAKEUP: ALEXANDRA SCHAFER/CHANEL ROUGE COCO/ NUMBER 4 HAIR CARE/OPUS BEAUTY; STYLIST: HEIDI MEEK/OPUS BEAUTY

Shad “Bow Wow” MOSS & Erica MENA THE CSI: CYBER STAR AND HIS FIANCEE UNWIND IN THEIR REFINED ATLANTA HOME When Bow Wow—who goes by his given name, Shad Moss, as the star of CBS’s new hit CSI: Cyber—first bought this eightbedroom mansion in suburban Atlanta around 2004, “I had murals of Tupac and Biggie on my walls,” he says. But then his mom, Teresa Caldwell, who also lives there, seized control of the design. “She painted over them!” says Moss, 28. “But it’s all good. She’s knows what she’s doing.” They added a pool and cultivated what Moss describes as a “homey, modern” vibe. As for living with his mother, he says, “I’ve had full-blown house parties downstairs, and she never heard a thing.” The sheer size of the house came in handy when his fiancée, Erica Mena, of VH1’s Love & Hip Hop, moved in last December. “Everything was perfect,” says Mena, 27. “All I had to do was place my shoes where I wanted them and I was home.” —EMILY STROHM

I SURROUND MYSELF WITH THINGS THAT MAKE ME HAPPY”
‘IT FEELS LIKE I’M A PART OF NATURE,’ SAYS THE SUPERNATURAL STAR OF HIS RUSTIC AUSTIN, TEXAS, HOME “My dream as a child was literally to grow up and live in Austin, as silly as that sounds,” says Jared Padalecki, who spent his childhood 80 miles away in San Antonio. So when he met his actress wife, Genevieve, 34, on the Vancouver set of the CW’s Supernatural, Padalecki, 32, proposed relocating. “We came and visited one summer, and she’s like, ‘Austin is cool!’ ” So they snapped up a 10,600-sq.-ft. lodge and guesthouse filled with dark wood. “I love the feeling of an old cabin lodge,” he says. “We bought the place in 2012 and have been making it our own ever since.” While the main house is being remodeled, the family— including sons Thomas, 3, and Shepherd, 1—are bunking in the two-bedroom guesthouse, equipped with an exercise room, home theater and wine cellar. But the actor’s favorite spot is his upstairs office [bottom right]. “When I come here, I pour myself a little bourbon and grab my guitar,” he says. “I’m free of my worldly responsibilities.” —ANA CALDERONE with James Hibberd 1

HILARY DUFF
THE FORMER TWEEN QUEEN GETS GROWN-UP BUZZ FOR HER TV COMEDY. BUT HER FAVORITE COSTAR IS HER 3-YEAR-OLD SON BY AILI NAHAS
CLIFF WATTS/TRUNK ARCHIVE
H
ilary Duff was ready to mix it up. Last month she took stock of her signature blonde locks and temporarily dyed them a brilliant turquoise. “I was a little scared at first,” Duff says, relaxing on the couch in her Beverly Hills home. “But I just wanted to have a little fun.” And after a roller-coaster year that saw her land a new sitcom, record a new album, end her marriage to hockey player Mike Comrie and focus on raising their son Luca, 3, she’s earned it. “I went through my highs and lows,” she says of the big shifts in her life, “but at the end of the day, I wouldn’t change anything. I feel happy. And I’m excited about everything I have.” More than 10 years after Lizzie McGuire, the Disney show that rocketed her to tween stardom, went off the air, Duff is back on TV in TV Land’s Younger. This time the actress plays the sassy sidekick to Broadway star Sutton Foster, who stars as a 40-year-old mom posing as a twenty-something to get ahead in a youth-obsessed world. “It’s edgy,” says Duff. “And it’s very fun to play a girl who has this independent life and is able to make mistakes freely, choices I would

1. “People haven’t seen me like this before,” says Duff of her role on Younger. “I have a few pretty naughty moments.” 2. “I’ve always worked like an adult,” says Duff of her days on Lizzie McGuire. “I feel very accomplished, but I want to do much more.”
two years later. “Maybe I never make because the ‘Fighting world is always watching.” for what makes got married too young,” she says. “But I have always Though the Houston native you happy had a strong sense of who I says her life is “more noris really am and what I’m capable mal than people think,” important of.” When the relationship she’s had a show-business didn’t work out, she found career since middle school, in life’ a way forward. Duff and and that makes it hard to relate to typical millennials. “I’ve felt Comrie announced their split in Januolder than I am for a really long time,” ary 2014 (see box) but didn’t file for says Duff. “A lot of responsibility came divorce until a year later. “We gave it my way early.” Foster agrees: “Hilary is time to settle because we had a little the most mature 27-year-old I’ve ever guy involved, and then we decided, known. She doesn’t get caught up in ‘Okay, it’s been a year. Let’s call it.’ ” celebrity noise.” Despite the emotional upheaval (Duff, Duff was just 22 when she wed Com- who co-parents with Comrie, admits rie; the pair welcomed Luca less than it’s a strange shift to “cook dinner just
for me and a 3-year-old”), the star says she’s “just fine.” Says Duff: “I’m not the person to sit around and have a really bad day. I’m not saying I’ve never sat around and cried, but I’d rather get outside in the sunshine.” Staying positive is part of how she’s survived. Growing up in Hollywood, Duff stayed away from the clubbing and drugging that derailed many of her peers. But she didn’t avoid all of fame’s pitfalls. By her late teens Duff was earning a reported $2 million for films like A Cinderella Story, but offscreen she became “obsessed” with her body image. “I was too thin,” she says now. “That was not a healthy place for me. I remember my hands would cramp because I wasn’t getting enough nutrients.” Now that she’s a mother, Duff embraces her natural frame—flaws and all. “My body is never going to be what it was,” she says of adapting to a post-baby physique. “I have stretch marks, my boobs are different, but I look in the mirror and I’m like, ‘This is what I got.’ I feel fit and strong.” Stamina comes in handy with a toddler. “We spent the weekend building Lego structures,” Duff says. “There had to be 900 little pieces. I wanted to pull my hair out!” As for the future, she says she’s “open” to dating and hopes for more kids. But whatever happens, she’s learned to handle curveballs. “You can have a vision for how you want things to go,” she says. “But it’s the bumps in the road that make you stronger.”
“It wasn’t just ‘boom,’ it happened,” says Duff of her decision to separate from Mike Comrie, her husband of over three years, in 2014. “It was just us slowly realizing we weren’t where we used to be.” Duff calls reconciliation buzz, sparked when the pair were often photographed together postseparation, “annoying.” Says Duff: “Luca is our No. 1 priority—we made a promise to raise him together. I’m really proud of how we handled it.” And the star looks back on her marriage with fondness. “We wrap a lot of respect around it,” Duff says. “And a bow on top with the memories we had together.”

THE FORMER MURPHY BROWN STAR OPENS UP ABOUT LOVE, FAME, BEAUTY—AND WHY SHE’S NO DIETER BY KIM HUBBARD
L
ike her alter ego in the hit ’90s sitcom Murphy Brown, Candice Bergen has a quick wit and a tart tongue. Reminiscing over photos at her daughter’s Manhattan home, the actress stops on a picture of Charlie McCarthy, her ventriloquist dad’s famous dummy. “Charlie was like a god in our house,” she says. “As a sibling rivalry it has no parallels. Now he’s in the Smithsonian.” Does she ever go to see him? Bergen raises an eyebrow. “No!” she replies. “Do I seem insane?” What she seems is remarkably levelheaded. Raised among Hollywood royalty and renowned for her Nordic beauty, she won roles in dramatic classics like Carnal Knowledge before Photograph by JOHN HUBA
finding her niche as a comic actress (she’s hosted SNL five times). “My dad said beautiful women commit suicide and I should develop my interests,” she says. Now 68, she talks freely about plastic surgery (“I’m clearly in need, but I just don’t care enough”) and the 30-lb. weight gain she cops to in her new memoir A Fine Romance (“I refuse to deprive myself”). Still acting occasionally, she finds joy in life with second husband Marshall Rose, 78, a real estate developer; in Chloe, 29, the daughter she had with her first husband, director Louis Malle; and in her rich store of memories. “I’m the only one that has such weird family photos,” she says, rolling her eyes at another Charlie McCarthy shot. “I take great pride in that.” PEOPLE April 20, 2015

BLONDE PERFECTION She was raised to have “a big investment in no vanity,” says Bergen (modeling in 1967). Still, she felt the difference in men’s reactions as she hit middle age: “People were always lovely to me, but suddenly they were . . . polite. You adjust.”
MURPHY MEETS JFK The day JFK Jr. filmed a spot on Murphy Brown, “I mean, secretaries from miles away were beating the door down,” Bergen says. “You could see it just never quit. But he was lovely.”
HOLLYWOOD ROOTS “I had a mostly solitary childhood. We lived on top of a mountain, and there were no kids up there,” says Bergen (fifth from left, next to Liza Minnelli). “This was my birthday party. We were having a dog performance, but we didn’t have those every day!”
THE LOUIS YEARS “I think he found me sort of like living with the light,” says Bergen (at her 1980 wedding to Louis Malle on his French estate). “Even though I’m half Swedish and not known for my lightness.”

GIRLS’ DAY OUT Bergen remains close friends with actress Ali MacGraw (center, with her and agent Sue Mengers). “Ali didn’t start doing movies until she was 30, and she was the only woman ever to be absolutely open about her age. I thought that was fantastic.”
FAMILY TIME Malle, who died in 1995, “was very brilliant,” says Bergen (with him and their daughter Chloe on Easter). “He was also tortured, but when he was charming, there was nobody like him. The first few years of our marriage were idyllic.”
DEVOTED MOM Initially “beyond ambivalent” about motherhood, Bergen says she now wishes she had more kids. But Chloe (in 1999) “has such a big personality that she makes up for it.”
CARNAL PALS “Jack is fantastically unique,” says Bergen of her Carnal Knowledge costar (on-set in 1970). “Did we kiss in that movie? Of course I would remember kissing Jack Nicholson, but so much has fallen away.” SECOND CHANCE Bergen calls husband Marshall Rose (whom she married in 2000) “a guy from Brooklyn who is innately elegant and a very attentive husband. Plenty of other women were trying to trap him when we met.” FROM TOP: CONSTANCE FREIBERG; MARY ELLEN MARK; JEAN-CLAUDE TRAMONT; CONSTANCE FREIBERG; WENDI ROSE

It’s kind of a cliché, but I was walking in Santa Monica and a blind woman was asking for help to cross the street. She was probably 75. Everyone just kept walking past her. I kind of caught myself, “What are you doing? Go over there and help!” So I walked her across the street. And she kind of commandeered me for the next hour. She was very sweet.
