During the shoot, we listened to lots of John’s tunes straight from Shawn’s personal playlist. • Secret Past Shawn also brought his childhood friend Geoff to the set, which means we got all the scoop on the singer’s preteen past. We’re talking full-on skater-boy with a punk rock faux-hawk and braces. Whaaa?!? (Geoff didn’t show us photos. Pics or it didn’t happen, right?) • Major Goofball Despite his celeb status, Shawn acted like a totally normal 17-year-old dude on set. Between takes, he showed us funny videos on Twitter and had us in, well, stitches when he narrated a silly clip of two crocodiles eating each other.

so that last part isn’t true at all. But if you really want to get rid *Okay, of that greasy-skin feeling, go to page 44! TEEN DREAM COME TRUE! am a firm believer in fangirling, aka the art of fuh-reaking out over a person, place, or thing that brings you unparalleled joy. I think it’s a great stress relief; it’s super-fun; and it clears up your skin instantly!* When I was younger, I was obsessed with New Kids on the Block. (History lesson: They were the 1D of my generation.) I picked up any magazine they appeared in. I watched every music video they ever made. And since this MUGGLE happened BC—Before Computers—I listened to their cassettes JOY My husband says this until the ribbon wore thin and snapped. But I was always pic proves that visiting The Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Orlando, embarrassed to share my level of fandom because I didn’t want my classmates Florida, was the happiest day of my life—outranking even to think I didn’t have a life—or, worse, that I was the lamest of the lame. our wedding. I cannot confirm nor deny that statement. As an adult, I now unabashedly indulge in my random obsessions, which have ranged from binge-watching every season of Alias countless times to playing all my fave Ray Charles songs on loop. And I encourage folks to do the same because what I’ve learned is that unleashing your inner fangirl is another way of saying you are not ashamed of who you are. Our cover guy, Shawn Mendes (page 70), knows what I’m talking about. He is many things—cute, crazy talented, and quite possibly one of the nicest people I’ve ever met. But he’s also a huge Harry Potter fan and not shy about admitting he used to carry a wand around in his shoe. No judgment here: My love of Harry Potter is also Hagrid-sized. So much so that I conspired with my fellow Potterhead, Deputy Beauty Editor Marta Topran, to find a way for Seventeen to visit The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios Hollywood before it even opened! (Turn to page 78 to see the magic we created.) Whether you’re loving a pop star, passionate about a political candidate, or really excited to learn some new programming skills—embrace what makes you geek out and let the world know about it. What usually happens? You’ll find people who breathe a sigh of relief and excitedly admit that they’re fans of the same thing too, then—boom!—a new squad is born. Here’s to your most epic fangirl-filled summer ever!

CRUSH ALERT!
Sabrina Carpenter The Girl Meets World star and “Smoke and Fire” singer, 16, dishes about her new tunes, geeking out around Miley, and making a difference.
Your new single has such a different sound from your first album, which you released just last year. What’s that about?
I think another year does a lot in a teenage girl’s life. I’ve really matured a lot. Now I’m trying to navigate my own relationship problems. I’ve channeled those experiences into writing my new songs.
Follow @seventeen on Instagram for daily inspo.
When did you first fall in love with music?
When I was really young, my dad would get haircuts at this place that was far away from our house, and I would drive along with him. During those car rides, he played classic Beatles songs like “Rocky Raccoon.” That’s when I really fell in love with the sound of older music, and my obsession has only grown over the past couple of years.
She deserves to be included in @seventeen’s April issue.
Speaking of obsession, have you ever been starstruck around another celeb before?
I first created a YouTube channel when I was 9 so I could enter a singing contest run by Miley Cyrus —Hannah Montana was an inspiration. I met Miley through that, and I couldn’t even speak. I got a photo with her, but I was wearing a fedora, so I’ll never show that to anyone! Although, it’s probably on Google somehow. . . .

Love those rare guys who are super-hot and totally sweet? This star of Independence Day: Resurgence (out June 24) will be just your type.
There’s one scene I filmed with Liam Hemsworth that stands out. It involved swimming through a huge pool of water filled with seaweed. It was exhausting. We had to lean on each other so many times just to get through it. And while our characters were bonding in the movie, Liam and I were bonding in real life. When we weren’t filming, we’d go out and explore the nightlife together in Albuquerque [New Mexico, where the film was shot].
You had to do a lot of your own stunts. Have you always been adventurous? Not at all. Growing up, I was terrified of heights. When we went to theme parks, I wanted to try the rides, but I was really afraid. Finally one day, my sister pulled me onto the Tower of Terror at Disneyland. I was so scared, but then I got a chance to realize how fun it is. Now I’m good with anything— I’ve even been skydiving.
What would people be surprised to find out about you? I’m a leap-year baby— I was born on February 29, so I finally had a birthday this year. I technically just turned 6! Since I rarely had birthdays growing up, my family would always make a big deal of it, which is something I’ve continued to do as an adult. I had four parties this year.
Are you crushing on any stars right now? Being an actor, I feel kind of weird having crushes on people in the industry because you end up meeting them. So I don’t have one at the moment, but I’ve definitely had a crush on Beyoncé in the past. I think everyone has had a crush on her at some point.
Tell us: How long would you last in an alien invasion?
Oh, I’m definitely making it all the way to the end. At this point, I have more training dealing with aliens than 99 percent of the world, so I’m in it for the long haul. –JEN ABIDOR

POWERGIRLS
What It’s Really Like
TO WORK WITH FAMILY
These siblings from Austin, Texas, balance being HSICs (Head Sisters in Charge) of a mega-successful fashion company and being BFFs. by ANDREA STANLEY 17: You launched your company, Jadelynn Brooke, in 2014. Where did the idea come from? Brooke, 22: Lexi Lynn and I were
always talking about how annoying it was that Jade, who was still in high school back then, would steal our sorority shirts—every time we came home, they were gone! [Brooke and Lexi Lynn both graduated from the University of Texas, Austin; Jade is currently a freshman at Texas Tech University.] Jade, 19: Sorry, not sorry! I just
couldn’t help myself—they were the most comfortable shirts ever.
17: How did you make it happen? Jade: We started brainstorming. We have
our best idea sessions over breakfast at our favorite diner. Pancakes equal inspiration. Brooke: We came up with 12 designs.
Our parents own an apparel company and suggested we reach out to the places their stuff was in to let them know we were doing our own thing. Today we’re in over 800 boutiques and online. So many pinch-me moments! SISTER ACT From left: Lexi Lynn, Brooke, and Jade, in their own designs.
14 SEVENTEEN.COM / JUNE + JULY 2016
Lexi Lynn: Now we also sell shorts, sleepware, coffee mugs, and key chains. And in June, we start selling backpacks.
MAIN PHOTO: COURTESY OF SUBJECTS. STILL LIFE: DEVON JARVIS. STILL LIFE ST YLIST: SABRINA GRANDE.
Lexi Lynn, 26: It got us thinking about how cool it would be to design graphic shirts with positive messages that inspire girls to be confident. We had always talked about how we could make money together—we were terrible at selling cookie dough for high school fund-raisers!—and the tees were something we felt passionate about.
We don’t really disagree about the big stuff. . . . Mostly we’re just so grateful we get to do this together. 17: Is it hard to work with your sisters? Brooke: Well, deciding
on a name had a few awkward moments. Jade: Being the baby
in the family, I felt it was only fair to have my name first for once! We also agreed that no one was “the boss.” We came up with titles like Chief Happy Director. [Editor’s note: That would be Lexi.] Lexi Lynn: We don’t really disagree about the big stuff, but put us in a photo shoot and we argue, like, a lot— from who gets to stand where to who actually gets to be in each shot. Brooke: To save the
drama, our parents are the tiebreaker! Lexi Lynn: Mostly we’re
just so grateful we get to do this together. Once we got a letter from a girl who said she’s trying to be a better sister because she admires our relationship.
It made us realize we’re doing more than selling apparel. So last year, we designed two tees where 100 percent of the profits went to The Young and the Brave—a foundation that helps families who have kids fighting cancer. We believe you should give back before you take. 17: You work on the line full-time? Jade: Yeah, we’re
basically group-texting about work 50 times a day. Since I’m in college, I spend about 20 hours each week on social media stuff. We love Snapchat (@jadelynnbrooke). It allows our customers to see the “real” us. Our hair isn’t perfect; our dance routines are not polished. It’s scary! 17: Where do you get your inspo from? Lexi Lynn: It can hit me
anywhere—a movie, a wedding. Jade gets inspired walking around campus, and Brooke gets a lot of ideas from her squad. Jade: When it’s time to put a design out in the world, it’s hard not to feel insecure. We literally scream out loud when we hit share on Instagram (@jadelynnbrooke) and hold our breath until the first comments come in. 17: Any girl-boss advice to share? Lexi Lynn: Remember

You’re not alone! But as you can see with Rowan’s floral dress and tiger shoes, as long as you find common colors, wearing lots of prints doesn’t have to be wild.
Metallics are easy as long as you pair them with something simple— like Solange does here. Going for a shimmery skirt and a solid top in the same color makes an #OOTD that’s out of this world in the best way possible.

“First, pluck strays or see a pro to define the shape—this actually makes them look fuller. Then, for fine brows, volume is key. This tinted volumizing gel has tiny fibers in it that mimic the look of real hair. Brush it on and they’ll adhere to even peach fuzz, plumping the overall look,” says Bailey.

UNRULY HAIRS “I love that my brows are full and thick, but they can be difficult to control.” –Cathleen, 20
Fast Fix
“Most girls with full brows think they don’t need to fill them in, but defining the natural brow line creates a clean shape. With a brush, press this wax along the edges and throughout to define and keep hairs in place. Go over it with the powder and then finish with clear brow gel to lock everything in,” says Bailey. Fast Fix
“Remember, your brows are sisters, not twins, so don’t try to fight Mother Nature. Enhance and even out what you do have with a pencil. Three girls show you how to conquer the anxiety that everyone is off somewhere else doing something better. by HEATHER VIGGIANI
PLAN A BIG GROUP DATE WITH FRIENDS! “Last summer, I took a job as a telemarketer—I was stuck in a room with no windows, all day, every day. On my breaks, I’d scroll through photos of my friends at the beach. It sucked! I decided to plan a squad concert outing at the end of the summer and started setting aside some of my earnings for my ticket. That way, any time I got sad at work, I could think about how my paychecks were going toward seeing my favorite band with my favorite people.” –Elinor, 19, Bronx, NY JUNE + JULY 2016 / SEVENTEEN.COM

(YOURLOVES)
I’ve already come out three times, first as a gay male, and then as gender nonbinary, which made me more comfortable exploring my feminine side with makeup and fashion. But I still didn’t feel 100 percent me. That’s when I realized why the labels weren’t fitting: I’m a girl who likes guys. I’ve sufered with social anxiety most of my life, and I always felt like people were talking about me or staring at me, but as soon as I identified and presented as female, it almost completely went away. Now I’m a normal teen girl. I got nominated to the homecoming court last year, and being in a dress and heels, walking down the field with my dad and all the other girls is a moment I hold so dear. I used to sit in the back of the classroom, but there I was, totally comfortable in my own skin in front of a stadium of people all cheering me on. I feel so confident now, and this is how I want to spend the rest of my life.
I always thought girls were beautiful, but I used to push those feelings away because I didn’t think they were okay to have. A couple of years ago, I was asking myself—and Google—What does it mean to be a girl who likes a girl and a boy? Am I normal? That’s when I came across tons of information about being bisexual. Through my search, I found out that a lot of other girls my age were out there talking about being as confused as I was, and I realized I wasn’t alone. In sixth grade, when I developed such a crush on a girl friend, I could no longer ignore the fact that I’m capable of having romantic feelings for girls as much as I can for guys. I started telling my close friends, and eventually my mom, that I’m bi, and it feels powerful to know that I just like who I like. This isn’t some kind of phase. I feel more energy and excitement every day now that I own who I am.
PHOTOS: COURTESY OF SUBJECTS (6).
I grew up as a girl, spent time as a trans man, and now I consider myself without a gender. Instead of being called he or she, I use they/them pronouns. As a kid, I didn’t really recognize gender stereotypes and roles as being accurate for me or anyone else; I thought they were BS. I was called a tomboy as a little girl, and then when I started to identify as a trans man, I heard, “You’re too feminine to be a boy,” because I like pink, stufed animals, and skirts. Four years ago, when I saw someone on Tumblr define queer as a person who has more than one identity under the LGBTQAI acronym, a person who is just open to anyone and anything, I realized, That’s me! Some people think queer is just confused—and yeah, I am. I’m confused by these “rules” society has for us. I’m choosing this identity because I do love everyone—especially myself— and this is how I feel most comfortable.
There’s a lot of talk about labels lately. But embracing your true self is the key to defining your happiness. by HEATHER VIGGIANI
When I was younger, I didn’t really vibe with my guy friends. I found myself agreeing with anything they’d say just to fit in. They’d say, “That girl is so pretty!” and I’d say, “Yeah!” even though I hadn’t noticed. Meanwhile, I’d never dare tell them about how cute I thought the boys on Degrassi were. So when I realized the reason I never wanted to kiss my seventh grade girlfriend was because I am gay, I not only came out of the closet, but I also came out of my shell. I no longer have to act like the person I thought other people wanted me to be, and that’s made me more confident in all areas of my life. But that doesn’t mean I’m going to let a label fully define who I am. I’m on the junior varsity soccer team, and I hear all the time, “You’re too sporty to be gay!” There are so many stereotypes about being gay, but I’m not going to put myself into a box.
I admire how some people look, but I’ve never had sexual urges—not even for guys I’ve dated. Lacking the attraction that everyone around me seemed to have made me feel like an outcast. I talked to my doctor, thinking maybe I had a hormonal imbalance, but I didn’t. When I opened up to my best friend about how insignificant having sex felt to me, and that I had never felt really attracted to anyone, she said, “Hey, that’s asexuality.” I researched it, listened to podcasts about it, and actually asked my 700 Twitter followers if anyone felt the same way I did—and some did! I wish I would’ve known about asexuality sooner. I wouldn’t have felt so weird, and I would’ve known this is fine, this is normal, and I would have been more confident. But it’s better late than never. This hasn’t stopped me from being in relationships, either. I’m in one now, but it’s about love more than sex.
In middle school, I had a few fake boyfriends—you know, the kind you have for two weeks and then break up with. Whenever I was with them, things felt just a bit of. Then I started to really develop a crush on a girl. When I was with her, everything felt 10 million times better. So natural; so real and fantastic. This is what I want, I realized. In seventh grade, I came out to my friends and my parents, and all of them are super-accepting. I used to feel so diferent from the girls in my class, and I wasn’t sure why, but as soon as I realized that I’m a lesbian, that feeling completely disappeared. I feel like a whole person now. Labels are important because they give somebody the sense of “Yes, this is who I am,” but at the same time, I hope these labels won’t be as important someday. As much as I do like talking about my sexuality, and as much as it’s a part of me, it’s just not that big of a deal. JUNE IS PRIDE MONTH! If you have any questions or want to talk to someone, go to itgetsbetter.org.

“EVERYONE THINKS WE’RE SIBLINGS” My dad is 38, but everyone says he looks young enough to be my brother. Even at parent-teacher conferences and school pickup, I’ve heard how shocked people are that he’s my father. At first, I thought it was so weird (and so did he), but I’ve gotten pretty used to it. But now that I’m getting older, something new is starting to happen that I’m not as comfortable with: I’m starting to get asked if he’s my boyfriend! Just a few months ago, we were in a mobile-phone store, and the salesperson thought we were a couple until we asked for a family plan. It was so awkward, but I could tell the guy was more thrown off than we were. Our situation has shown me why you should never judge people based on appearances, and I say that for more than one reason. Looking at my dad, you might assume he’s a chill parent, but it’s the opposite. He’s very oldschool and super-strict. I think he acts that way so people take him seriously. And it’s working for me, because I definitely respect him!

SHAWN MENDES IS CHILLING—LITERALLY—IN A HIPSTER-PACKED BROOKLYN CAFÉ. IT’S AN HOUR AND A HALF BEFORE HIS SEVENTEEN COVER SHOOT, AND THE 17-YEAR-OLD SINGERSONGWRITER IS HOLDING A GLASS OF ICE WATER TO HIS (SLIGHTLY) RED CHEEK IN A LAST-DITCH ATTEMPT TO QUELL A HEAT RASH. “I’M CONSTANTLY LIKE, ‘OH, MY GOD, I LOOK WEIRD!’ AND PAYING ATTENTION TO MY LOOKS,” SAYS SHAWN, “AND NOW, IT STRESSES ME OUT EVEN MORE. WHEN YOU’RE GROWING AND YOUR HORMONES ARE OUT OF CONTROL AND YOU HAVE PEOPLE TAKING A MILLION PICTURES OF YOU, IT’S CRAZY.”
72
What may be more insane is that somehow—despite the fact that his first album, Handwritten, debuted at No. 1; his Vine videos have been looped more than 475 million times; and his Mendes Army is 9.4 million strong on Insta—Shawn and his public attempt at a home remedy are totally flying under the radar. Dressed down in black jeans and a T-shirt, without an entourage or security guards, the Canadian could be any guy you know from school, talking about his favorite book (The Book Thief, a recommendation from a certain girl named Camila), going to prom (“It sucked”), and his 12-year-old sister (“I’m still her stupid brother who she doesn’t have time for when I’m home”). It was a totally different story two nights ago at his sold-out show at Radio City Music Hall, where he commanded the stage. But unlike some stars, who just get up there and do their thing, Shawn, as you can imagine, made it feel like he was delivering the biggest and best group hug ev-er. You immediately felt connected—not just to his brainburrowing songs (we know you still can’t get “Stitches” and “Something Big” out of your head), but to everyone around you and to Shawn himself. Which makes sense—this is a guy who not only gets you, but who’s also open enough to let you get him. He’s not too cool to tweet about watching The Vow alone or to share a video of himself tripping over a mic stand. “As exciting as my life can be, it’s not because I’m a god,” Shawn says, working to reposition his athletic sixfoot frame to comfortably fit around a tiny table. “It’s just a different life. I still have those moments of, like, sitting in my buddy’s basement on a Friday night for four hours, not knowing what to do.” Yeah, we know you’d love to help him out with that problem. But
here’s a chance to get to know him even better first. Being famous comes with a lot of pressure. How are you handling it?
Puberty is hitting me pretty hard right now mentally. I’m just growing, and I have the craziest s*** going on around me while it’s happening, and it’s a lot to take in. I have moments where I’m like, “I don’t want to do this. This is too much.” But then the next day, I’ll be like, “I’m good. I’m ready for this.” I’ve always been a person who thrives in high-pressure situations. Growing up, I was always chosen to be the speaker for the kids in my group because I could handle the pressure the most, and I love that about me. I miss when I just had the pressure of having an essay due for school. I could go home, write it, and the stress was gone until I had another one due. Now the pressure and the stress stay for longer, and it’s bigger. Let’s talk about life before all this. What were you like in school?
I was really the most average guy; I had average grades and really close friends. I wasn’t really into music until ninth grade—and I’m only in twelfth grade now. As a kid, I played sports. I played soccer for six years, then I quit. And then, boom, I said, “Let me play hockey.” I taught myself how to skate, played for two years, then quit. I was thinking about going to college for architecture. Then I picked up the guitar at 14. Were you known as a music guy?
I took music classes, but it wasn’t until the Vine and YouTube stuff that people started being like, “Oh, what song is he doing?” And then it was more like, “Shawn’s a weirdo. What is he trying to do? Does he think he’s going to be Justin Bieber or something?” Well, you’re both Canadian, but you don’t have much in common musically.
He’s great. When I was a kid, he was my No. 1 and I wanted to be like him. But I’ve grown into what I want to be. Going back to when I first posted

WHAT HE’S T H I N K I NG :
THE S H AW N E DI TION HIS BEST ADVICE TO GIRLS ABOUT GUYS: Probably that not all guys are as nice as I am. I’m kidding . . . kind of. Just follow your heart. If you think he’s a good guy, he’s probably a good guy. But usually, the first guy or girl you meet is probably not The One. But you also don’t want to assume they’re not, you know? Just enjoy it for what it is, take your time, and if it doesn’t work out it, it doesn’t work out.
circumstances. Whenever I’m like, Oh, my God, I can’t do this, I’ll immediately be like, Shut up, Shawn. You got this. How did you get so comfortable sharing your dorky side online?
Most guys don’t express their emotions, but growing up, I was surrounded by girls. I have only one boy cousin. I had no one tell me, “Don’t say that, you’re a wimp for saying that.” So it’s always been really easy for me to express my emotions. It’s so important to me to open myself up to people and give them all they need. If people are going to like me, I want them to like me for who I am. Besides, musicians get a bit of a pass. We’re allowed to show our sensitive side.
learning from. The best moments in my life that I’ve had with my friends, I can remember John Mayer in the background. But I’m going to keep writing until I feel I’m ready to release the album. I have songs about growing up, about ex-relationships— ex-relationship, I should say. I haven’t had relationships. A couple of songs about relationships with girls since fame. Have you had many of those?
No, no. Just the way people act. There are really cool stories that are not necessarily from my heart that I’m dying to talk about. So have you ever had your heart broken?
What can you tell us about your next album?
No . . . but you can’t avoid it.
It’s a mix of pop and like a John Mayer– and–Ed Sheeran acoustic feel all in one. My friends and I think John Mayer is this music god who we’ve grown up
Have you ever broken someone’s heart?
I think I have. That’s worse, almost. There’s a song about that.
SHOULD A GIRL KEEP TEXTING OR CALLING A GUY IF SHE DOESN’T HEAR BACK FROM HIM? Maybe just text a few times. But don’t keep texting him, though. If he’s working or
whatever, or if he just doesn’t want to text you back, that’s only going to make things worse. I’ve been in that position—I think everyone’s been in that position. IS IT COOL WHEN GIRLS MAKE THE FIRST MOVE? Always. Ever since I was younger, I’ve been pissed about guys having to make the first move. So, yeah, definitely do it. I think it’s really cool and sweet. FILL IN THE BLANK: NEVER TRUST A GUY WHO USES THE ___ EMOJI. The emoji. That guy is just a weirdo.
Where do you think all your creativity comes from?
My parents. They always gave me the opportunity to let my imagination soar. When I was growing up, my mom made me believe in magic. I thought I was a wizard, straight up, until I was 12. I watched all the Harry Potter movies—I was in love with Hermione—and wrote down all of the spells. My mom would be like, “So you’ve got your wand with you?” And I’d say, “Of course, I have my wand!” and I’d pull it out of my shoe. Do you still believe in magic?
Totally, 100 percent, and I will until the day I die. I’ll figure it out. It will be real. 77

You know her as the reigning world champion. You’ve seen her routines. But who is Simone off the balance beam? “I watch a lot of Netflix,” she says. “I recently binged The Fosters and Fuller House.” Her other pop culture obsession: Zac Efron. (“He’s very attractive!”) And you may have something else in common with her too. Simone admits she’s struggled with learning to love herself. “When I was in the sixth grade, a boy teased me because I had big muscles,” she says. “That made me feel insecure, but I’d hit the gym and realize I was given this body for a reason—I can only get myself in the air because of it.” That strength and grace are exactly what make her a front-runner for the 2016 Olympic Team (she’ll compete at the trials in early July), and she’s trying her best to take things one day at a time. “Sometimes I find myself thinking, Oh, I wonder what Rio’s like? And then I’m like, No, Simone, slow down.” If she does qualify, she says, “I’d be honored to represent the United States. But I also think it would just be fun!”

As she double-tucks her way to the gymnastics trials, Maggie is getting support from two girls who have totally been there: 2012 Olympians Gabby Douglas and Aly Raisman. “They’re really good friends, and they remind me to stay focused and not be too hard on myself,” she says, adding, “Training is really emotional. It takes a lot of mental strength to push myself.” Want to know who else helps out with that? Justin Bieber. “I’ll listen to anything by him,” she says. “It gets me pumped up.” Maggie, who won a bronze medal for her floor routine at last year’s World Championships (not to mention a team gold), says she discovered her passion for gymnastics on her preschool playground. “My brother and I played around there a lot and had a great time,” says the incoming University of Oklahoma freshman. “I always loved it.” In April, Maggie was sidelined by a knee injury (and surgery), but she says she’ll be ready to secure her spot on the team in July. “It would mean seeing all of my hard work, dedication, and sacrifice finally come to life.”

Ashleigh has a confession to make: “I haven’t always dreamed of being in the Olympics.” Sure, she loves water polo (which she got into at age 9, when her mom signed her up for a swim program), and she’s really good at it (she was named Top Goalkeeper at the 2015 World Water Polo Championships). But there are other things she loves too—like studying psychology at Princeton University. “I picked a school that offered the right balance of academics and athletics,” says Ashleigh, who has taken the year off to focus on training. “I didn’t want to make water polo my whole life.” Yet now as she and her team prepare to play in Rio, she says she’s getting psyched. And she thrives on the pressure of keeping opponents from scoring. “I like that I can block somebody and be like, ‘Hey, I won that one!’ ” she says. “It’s cool to be the last line of defense.”

Those nonathletic interests help take her mind off the pressure of competing. “I still get nervous,” she says. “But that just means I love my sport, and that’s a feeling I hope I’ll always have.”

How’s this for a cool way to finish off high school: Break the World Junior high jump record (Vashti cleared a 6-foot, 6¼-inch crossbar—she’s 6-foot-1 herself!); sign a sponsorship deal with Nike; and, of course, go to prom. “It feels so good,” she says of her whirlwind senior year. Now Vashti is fully focused on the Olympic trials in early July. “I can’t have a single off day,” she says. But at least she’ll still get to spend time with her family—her father, Randall, a retired NFL quarterback, doubles as her coach. “Sometimes he gets a little more into it than I do,” she says. “But for the most part, we really enjoy working together—I look up to him.” Whether she qualifies for Rio or not, Vashti plans on moving full speed ahead as a pro athlete. “It was a hard decision because I really want to go to college and still plan on going one day,” she says. “But once I broke that record, I knew turning pro was the right choice for me.”
GOLF
Golf is back as an Olympic sport for the first time since 1904, and you could say Lexi has been teed up for this moment her whole life. “When I was growing up, our house was on a golf course,” she says. “My brothers and I would go out on the patio and hit Wiffle balls with plastic golf clubs.” At 7, Lexi started playing competitively, and by the time she

Remember how cool it was when the U.S. Women’s soccer team won the 2015 Women’s World Cup? Julie and her teammates thought so too. “Right after we won, everyone was like, This is so awesome . . . now let’s go to the Olympics,” she says. Now she and Carli Lloyd and Alex Morgan and the rest of the team are ready to do just that. And ever since this bubbly defender was nominated for the Golden Ball Award at the World Cup, she’s only grown stronger: In April, Julie had her first multigoal game. Her pregame secret weapon? A vanilla latte. “It gets me excited to play.” Not that she needs much help getting pumped. “I’ve dreamed of being a soccer champion since I was 8 years old,” she says. “I had T-shirts, soccer ball pillows . . . you name it!” These days, the Santa Clara University grad is the one inspiring dreams like that. “I still get butterflies whenever I see a young girl wearing my name on a jersey,” she says. “It’s one of the greatest feelings in the world.”

he snow fell all night, transforming the world by morning. It was crystal snow, magical snow, creating a perfect, uniform blanket that concealed everything underneath. Eleven-year-old Aerin Kelly scrambled down the three-tiered back patio, her boots sinking into the sparkling fluff. She fell forward and laughed, rolling onto her back and staring at the white sky. A figure appeared over her. It was her 17-yearold sister, Helena, wearing a fitted white overcoat with a fur collar, fur

boots, and a brown fedora. Her eyes looked extra blue. Her newly short platinum-blond hair framed her face. Helena looked more beautiful than ever that day, Aerin would think later. Aerin scrambled to her feet just as Helena tipped her face upward. “Isn’t it funny how snow has a smell?” Helena mused. “I think we’re supposed to get more,” Aerin said eagerly. Helena pressed a fur boot into a snowdrift. “Got your phone? Can I check weather.com?” “You’re always losing yours,” Aerin
said good-naturedly, lobbing her iPhone to her sister. Helena caught it between her red leather gloves, pulled them off, and tapped on the screen. “Six more inches today.” She grinned. “We really should make our inaugural snowman tomorrow, but I bet you’ll be on the slopes all day. You up for it now?” “Sure.” The girls tramped toward the middle of their vast six-acre property, where they’d been building the first snowman of each season since they were little. Helena started rolling a snowball, her hat tilting across her eyes. “I think this year’s should be a snow-woman,” Helena decided. “With big boobs.” “And a badonka butt,” Aerin added, still breathless. Helena smirked. “And maybe a vagina. Make her totally anatomically correct.” Aerin giggled. But what she really wanted to do was throw her arms around her sister. Helena was downplaying it, but it was weird they were hanging out again. Laughing. There was a time when Helena and Aerin had been inseparable. At the beginning of last summer, though, Helena had . . . changed. She’d holed up in her room, chopped off her signature long hair, and stopped talking to her family, even Aerin. She’s a teenager, their mother had told Aerin absently. She has her first boyfriend. Give her space to figure it out. But Aerin had needed her more than ever. Their parents, who had always seemed so in love, were fighting nonstop. Aerin knew Helena heard the fights through her thin bedroom walls, too, but whenever Aerin tried to talk to her about it, Helena always changed the subject. Illustrations by Samantha Hahn

AMATEURS
But now, Helena was piling snow together for the torso, smiling like things were totally normal. Suddenly, Aerin blurted, “I guess Kevin didn’t want to make a snowman?” Helena stopped and looked at her. “I didn’t ask him.” “Do you guys, like, do it?” Aerin asked quickly. Helena’s brow furrowed. “Do it?” Aerin had thought asking would make her seem older, like a girl her sister still wanted to hang out with. Helena would probably go inside and slam her door, and that would be that. Helena cupped Aerin’s shoulder instead, the way she used to at swim meets when Aerin would climb out of the water after coming in last. The gesture was so tender that Aerin felt a rush of tears. “It’s just that I miss you.” Helena squeezed hard. “We’ll talk more. But . . . some of it will have to be under wraps.” Aerin blinked. “Huh?” “Like on our phones.” “Like . . . texts?” Helena looked at her as if she wanted to say something more but then cocked her head toward the woods as if she heard something. Aerin followed her gaze but only saw the same trees that had always been there. When she peered at Helena again, her sister was scooping up a ball of snow and smashing it into Aerin’s head. Aerin squealed. “Let’s find sticks for her arms,” Helena said. They built the head and shaped the hair. Chatted about getting a new puppy. Aerin thought they could name him Cap’n Crunch. “That’s a good name,” Helena said. Aerin looked up, even more puzzled. It was a dumb name, and they both knew it. Why was Helena being so nice? Aerin felt self-conscious. What if she knew something about their parents Aerin didn’t—like they were getting a divorce? Aerin wasn’t sure she was ready for that conversation. But Helena said nothing about that, and then the snow-woman was finished. Both girls stepped back a few feet. Aerin smiled at their work. “She’s our best one yet.”
When she looked at Helena, her sister’s head was turned toward the woods. “Totally,” she said softly. For a moment, she looked like she might cry, but then she focused on the snow-woman and smiled cheerfully. “She needs something else, don’t you think?” “Like what?” “Like . . . ” Helena put a hand to her mouth. “A purse, maybe. I found a brown vinyl one at Goodwill a few days ago. It’s on my bed. Wanna grab it?” Aerin was certain she’d heard her wrong. Helena’s room was off limits. Maybe this was some kind of test? “O-okay.” Aerin opened the sliding door and padded through the living room. The house was quiet, her parents absent. She smiled at her reflection in the giant hallway mirror. She had the same blond hair as Helena, but her features were more muddled, her shoulders broader, her face more masculine. Still, it was clear they were sisters. Maybe they would get pizza later. Maybe Helena would drive her somewhere in her VW Bug. Maybe they’d figure out some way to get their parents to stop arguing. Helena’s bedroom door was closed. Aerin turned the knob. She surveyed a desk full of art supplies, posters of bands Aerin had never heard of, an iPhone on a heart-shaped pillow on the bed, the brown vinyl purse. Helena’s closet doors were flung open, revealing the flamboyant clothes she’d been wearing lately—feathers and silk, swirl prints, and fringe. Aerin’s gaze moved to the dresser. A crane, folded out of slick red paper, stood like a sentinel. A shiver went through her body. It seemed to be staring at her. She walked closer, touched its wing. A cloth-covered journal lay next to it. Aerin lifted the cover and looked at her sister’s name written on the front page in her spiky scrawl. There was a creak, and Aerin stiffened. She grabbed the purse from Helena’s bed, slung it around her elbow, and ran into the hall. The giant kitchen was still empty. She peeked
into the backyard. Helena was gone. The snow-woman stood, arms akimbo, in the middle of the yard. “Helena?” Aerin called out, taking a few steps onto the patio. A bird called from a high branch. The wind was still. The yard was a blank, open, lonely square. “Helena?” Aerin cried again, clomping down the steps. “Where are you?” Her voice echoed in the stillness. Her heart thudded. She left because I spied. She ran around to the front. Helena’s car sat in the driveway. No one was in the driver’s seat. Aerin flashed on the image of Helena’s phone, still inside the house. Her sister would never leave without it. Something flickered at the tree line, and Aerin turned. “Helena?” Then she noticed something in the snow. The fallen berries from the bushes that lined the back of the property looked like smeared blood against white. In their midst, Aerin almost hadn’t seen the red leather gloves Helena had been wearing, in the snow next to them, palms up. Aerin ran to them, heart pounding hard. “Helena?” she called out. “Helena!” Helena would never answer again. Excerpted from The Amateurs by Sara Shepard (Freeform imprint), out on November 1, 2016.

In a Relationship My BF/GF will be a regular.
Land a Cool AF Match Get out of the friend zone Believe it or not, college housing experts say bunking with a BFF often doesn’t work, so fill out your college’s housing questionnaire. Some schools have stopped random matches, but you can still use their database to find a solid pairing. You can access it once you fill out your housing paperwork, says Carla Dennis, a director for housing at the University of Georgia. Or look on your class’s social media page— students often post requests there.
Dare to be . . . similar Yes, this is a time to expand your horizons, but too many differences can lead to conflicts, Dennis says. You and your roommate should share at least some basic habits and interests.
Don’t be a super-stalker It’s fine to poke around a potential OTP’s Insta, but if you start trolling her friends’ feeds, you risk taking things out of context. A better use of time? See how she interacts with her besties on her own accounts.
Write a Not-So-Basic Bio Posting on Facebook? Just be real, says Maggie Burke of Likeable Media, a firm that improves social media presences. Keep it to two short paragraphs, and make it about you—not your friends, family, or pet. Hint: Use some of the key words from Step 1. List only one social media handle— the one that best reflects you. Have a friend read it to make sure it sounds like you. If you drop phrases you’d never use (like OMG, that’s so lit), you’ll sound like someone you’re not.
Step 3
Be a Good Dormmate Make a game plan Before you even step foot in your new digs, figure out who’s going to bring what. That way you don’t end up with two mini fridges and no rugs, says Amanda Zuckerman, a cofounder of dorm-decor company Dormify.com.
Discuss the rules Some schools require roomies to sign an agreement—think of it as a loose contract that lays out some general guidelines, Dennis says. If yours doesn’t, sit down and create one together. It’s better to figure out now if it’s cool for you to borrow her hair-straightener.
Have face time
Vague texts and passive-aggressive notes? No. Just no. If you want to be a dorm Dream Team, you need to communicate. Schedule a biweekly catch-up so a small issue, like where your OJ went, doesn’t kill the vibe between you two.
I thought she ghosted . . .
Step 4 Dealing With a Lame One
These real girls (and Dormify style advisers) have been there, done that—so you don’t have to.
Living with someone new is hard! If you’re having issues, ask . . . Are you expecting too much? You may want a BFF you can talk to about all the things, but in reality, you just need someone respectful.
Have you talked about it?
PHOTOS: TOM MERTON/GALLERY STOCK (2).
It’s easy to gossip and complain about the situation with everyone but your roommate. Address the issue directly instead.
Have you tried everything?
“During orientation, I met a potential roommate. I gave her my name, but she didn’t write it down and later forgot how to spell it. When she tried to find me, she thought I’d given her a fake name—and when I didn’t hear from her, I thought she didn’t really want to room with me. Months later, we met again and realized the miscommunication. We ended up living together our last three years. So if you meet someone you like, have her type her name in your phone!”
Nerves almost scared me roommate-less . . .
“If you want to share a space with someone, be bold and just ask. I found out that one of my classmates from my high school was going to the same university that I was, but I felt too embarrassed asking her if she wanted to share a room with me. Thankfully, she ended up asking me, and now we’re best friends.” –Katie, 20, Pittsburgh, PA
Maybe your roomie is actually a bad match. If that’s the case, loop in your resident adviser, who can help mediate.

That awkward silence, though . . .
“The first few weeks living with my roommate were painfully quiet—we were both a little shy. Then one day, we decided to rearrange our living space, and that finally broke the ice. An afternoon of problem solving helped us bond and allowed a real friendship to form.” –Rae, 22, Houston, TX

CRUSHING & CRASHING “My family has a beach house on the Outer Banks. The cutest boy lives next door, so I always try to look good in case I see him. One morning, I woke up early to get to the beach and volunteered to take my 3-year-old cousin down to the shore with my aunt. I was walking backward in the sand to face my cousin in case she ran off, and as I was going, I heard my aunt say, ‘Watch out!’ Little did I know, cute neighbor boy was sitting on his towel behind me. I ended up ramming my butt straight into his face! We both crashed into the sand and started laughing. Then he tried making small talk. I felt so awkward, so I ended the convo and walked away. We never talked again!”

COULDN’T HOLD IT
“I was riding my bike to work when my friend saw me from her car. She drove up next to me and honked her horn to get my attention. She startled me so much, I accidentally swerved toward a cafe table outside a boutique. I totally crashed into it and then literally flew off my bike! My friend stopped her car to see if I was okay, but everyone around me was just staring! So traumatic.”
“As a camp counselor, I encourage the kids to drink a lot of water and I lead by example. One night I made the mistake of not going to the bathroom before lights-out. Guess how that turned out! As everyone slept, I quietly tossed my soaked sheets and climbed into my friend’s bunk. But it didn’t take long for people to figure out what had happened. Now no one lets me sleep on the top bunk for fear of getting peed on!”

Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed a super-hot guy about to get into the car next to me, so I stopped. He was staring into my window and had clearly witnessed my little rock concert in action. Then he started laughing and wouldn’t stop! I sank down in my seat and tried to disappear. It was so bad.”

hen I was in high school, I was a total romantic and spent a lot of time thinking about boys. I loved to daydream about my crushes, and I’d convince myself we were destined to be a couple. The truth is, I didn’t date anyone in high school. I had two best guy friends—Mark and John—but no “boyfriends.” I wanted to be in a relationship, but no one ever asked me out. You see, I grew up in a small New England town where the beauty ideal was very traditional and seemingly flawless: blonde hair, blue eyes, legs for days. In my mind, that meant anyone who didn’t look that way was considered unattractive. I started to doubt everything about myself, from my curvy build to the gap in my teeth. I never felt beautiful. Junior year, I didn’t expect anyone to ask me to prom, and I made peace with that. So I was shocked when John invited me. It was one of the best things a friend could have ever done. For the first time, I felt like a guy had seen me. And then senior year, it happened again! Mark invited me. I never dreamed I’d even go to prom once, so going twice was exhilarating and even more satisfying. Those dates were great first steps to helping me build up my confidence. When I left my small town and attended Boston University, I truly began to accept myself.

The school’s diverse culture embraced everything that I am, so instead of feeling defeated like I did back home, I started to think about what I did value about myself, tooth gap and all. And then the craziest thing happened: My beauty radiated from within. Guys started asking me to dance when I went out and, yes, during my very first semester I started dating. It felt amazing. You don’t need to wait to get to college to PREACH! find your confidence. “Spend time defining what you value about Take whatever it is you yourself instead of what like about yourself— you think someone else will value,” she says. even if it’s your pinkie “I’m always true toes—and walk around to Uzo.” every day saying, “You know what? I have really great pinkie toes.” Eventually that positive feeling will seep into every part of who you are, and the people around you will see it too. Also, never forget the people who already notice the amazing things about you. To this day, I’m still close to my high school friends—I even brought Mark as my date to the SAG Awards this year! And I know it’s easier said than done, but try your best not to “ I loved turning to my guy second-guess yourself. friends for crush advice. ” You are enough, just –Uzo (at age 16 with Mark, left, and John) as you are.
