For me, well-being and being organized at home go hand in hand. No one wants to waste time looking for car keys, a special bracelet or their child’s favourite stuffed animal. It’s frustrating, and frustrated is the opposite of the calm state of mind that’s necessary for a sense of well-being. Home really is a sanctuary now. That’s why this issue is dedicated to creating a beautifully decorated, nurturing, well-ordered environment. I love the way designer Michelle Hurley transformed a home by rearranging its main-floor footprint to create space for the family to come together. Then she decorated in a modern, spirited, soulful style (“Making Room,” page 78). You have to see her amazing organizing solution for the busy entryway. It’s a gorgeous piece of smart design – an orderly, sweet-looking mud room on a wall! Speaking of entryways, we are so lucky to show you Jann Arden’s Toronto condo (her home away from her Alberta home), designed by Tommy Smythe and Laura Fremont (page 26). Tommy and Laura placed a stunning étagère in the entryway for books and lovely accents, so that as soon as Jann walks in, she sees the personal objects she prizes and feels more at home. Throughout the space, Jann’s values drove the decorating – she and Tommy are vegan, so cruelty-free furnishings were essential. I applaud that dedication to mindful design. Knowing yourself and being true to your values is, to me, at the heart of decorating for well-being. We discuss this even further in Karl Lohnes’ interview with Alicia Ruach (page 40) and in our look at four different decorating approaches that promote well-being at home (page 36). The issue really is full of ideas for making your home a beautiful, nurturing space in your own special way. I hope it inspires you!

INGREDIENTS MAKES 4

cups buttermilk tbsp vegetable oil tbsp vanilla large egg yolk cups all-purpose flour cup granulated sugar tsp baking powder tsp salt large egg whites tsp cream of tartar tbsp Orange-Infused Maple Syrup (see recipe below)
DIRECTIONS In large bowl, whisk together buttermilk, oil, vanilla and egg yolk. Add flour, sugar, baking powder and salt; mix well to form batter. Set aside. In separate large bowl, beat egg whites and cream of tartar using electric mixer on medium-high speed until stiff peaks form. Gently fold into reserved batter. Grease large skillet and interiors of four 3-inch round metal cookie cutters (at least 1½ inches in height). Place cookie cutters in skillet and heat over low heat. Fill cookie cutters with batter three-quarters of the way full. Cover skillet and cook until batter is set (bottoms of pancakes will be golden brown while centres will be slightly jiggly), 3 to 4 minutes.
Flip cookie cutters gently and continue cooking for 3 minutes. Transfer cookie cutters to plate; using spatula, gently remove pancakes. Clean cookie cutters and repeat with remaining batter. (Make-ahead: Can be stored in airtight container and refrigerated for 2 days or frozen for up to 1 month.) Divide pancakes among plates. Drizzle with Orange-Infused Maple Syrup. Orange-Infused Maple Syrup In small saucepan, combine 1 cup maple syrup and julienned zest of 1 orange. Bring to boil. Remove pan from heat; infuse for 15 minutes. Strain through fine sieve into glass jar; discard zest. (Make-ahead: Can be refrigerated for up to 1 month.) Makes about 1 cup.

Don't have cookie cutters? You can cook the pancakes without them: simply flip when bubbles form on the surface; cook until golden on both sides. The pancakes will be thinner but just as tasty!

“
T
ommy Smythe, I need you so badly!” That’s what multiplatinum singer, songwriter, actor, author and animal rights activist Jann Arden said after attempting to furnish her Toronto condo. Jann, who lives in Alberta, travels regularly to Toronto for work and was sick of staying at hotels. “I bought the condo just before the pandemic and plunked in some furniture,” she says. “It looked so dull, I thought I might as well be back in a hotel room.” A Tommy Smythe intervention was needed ASAP. “Jann and I have been friends for years. She is one in a kajillion,” says Tommy, co-founder of TOM Interior Design Studio. “She’s a hoot-and-ahalf, and her condo was crying out for some femininity and a bit of her rock-and-roll personality.” Tommy and lead designer Laura Fremont’s plan for the 900-squarefoot space: a colourful palette, new furniture and lots of pattern. And since Tommy and Jann are vegans, everything had to be cruelty-free. After communicating digitally during lockdown, Jann flew out for the big reveal. She says, “When I walked in to see it, I was FaceTiming Tommy and started to cry. He thought I was crying because I hated it, but they were tears of joy. I didn’t know it could be this amazing.”

EXUBERANCE: CHECK OPPOSITE When designer Laura Fremont suggested checkerboard tiles for the kitchen, Tommy was all in. “I knew that it was the bold stroke this plain-Jane kitchen was longing for,” he says. The new island has a tabletop that seats seven. Even the front door is lavished with attention. “I wanted the pink from the living room to make an appearance in the entrance hall,” says Tommy. “It’s meant to be a warm goodbye when Jann heads home to Alberta.”
COOL COLOURS RIGHT Tommy used the green glaze of the kitchen’s artisanal tiles as inspiration for the paint colour here. “It creates a transition between the kitchen and living room,” he says. “Breaking up a small space with colour can actually make it feel bigger because it ups the number of individual rooms. With little effort, one big open space becomes two or even three.” The artwork was taken out of Jann’s storage and works perfectly with the new scheme. GET A HANDLE LEFT The choice of brass hardware feels warm in the kitchen’s cool palette. “The original kitchen had no upper-door hardware and very generic chrome handles on the lower drawers and cupboards,” says Tommy. “Laura and I wanted statement hardware, so we scaled up and changed the program from cool to warm metal. Knobs this big command centre stage, so they were placed accordingly!”
BOOK KEEPER OPPOSITE Finding a bookcase (a specific Jann request) that worked in the small entryway was challenging, so Tommy opted for an étagère. “The great thing about it, especially in a small space, is that it feels light. No sides, glass shelves, plenty of book storage for the resident avid reader, and surface area left over for mail, keys and keepsakes,” says Tommy. MIX MASTER OPPOSITE While all of the furniture in Jann’s condo is new, you’d never know it, thanks to the masterful mix of fabrics and vintage silhouettes. The ’50s floor lamp has a bit of the desired rock-and-roll look, and the vintage chair comes to life re-covered in an unabashedly playful fabric. The spirited equine bar cart is more than just whimsical. “Jann is passionate about ending live horse export,” says Tommy. “This funny, quirky little piece reminded me immediately of her spirit, her home in Alberta and her important activism.”
PRETTY, PLEASE RIGHT “I love how the whimsical pink living room drapes continue in the bedroom,” says Jann. “They make the small rooms feel big.” Tommy and Laura had originally sourced a contemporary light fixture for over the bed, but Jann requested something prettier; a Venetian chandelier fit the bill. hether you’re livin’ large in a spacious suburban bedroom or keeping it cozy in a 500-square-foot condo, we all want a blissful sleep retreat. But that doesn’t mean your bedroom needs to look like a hotel room. This is your private space, where you should feel free to amplify your personal style. Follow along, and I’ll show you sleep-easy decorating tips and tricks that come in all sizes!

No matter the size of their bedroom, whenever I ask people to describe their perfect version, they usually start with key components – a super comfy bed, crisp sheets and storage. Then come the decorating dreams. Some want bold pattern while others want soothing neutrals; still others want dark, enveloping colour. There is no right or wrong when it comes to style. This is your space to relax and recharge in, and its aesthetic should reflect you. In a bedroom I designed (shown here) on HGTV Canada’s Save My Reno, the goal was to create a lakeside-inspired sanctuary. So we ran with it, letting nature – water, sand, stone and wood – inspire all the colour choices in the room. The sky blue grasscloth wallcovering was our jumping-off point. Next, we layered a rug in shades of water and sand over the existing wall-to-wall carpet, which gave us a base for the velvet channelled headboard that’s upholstered in a deeper shade of sand. And last, we hit repeat on every colour in the bedding and pillows.

Luxuriously Large The biggest challenge in decorating a large bedroom is to make it feel cozy and inviting. If you’re blessed with major square footage, a seating area with a side table and armchairs or settee will create a peaceful place to have your morning coffee. A bed with a footboard or a bench will also keep a big room from feeling cavernous. In this space, we flanked the bed with identical nightstands to build out the headboard wall and give the room symmetry and balance. To add architectural detail, contractor Sebastian Clovis, my Save My Reno co-host, added beefy crown moulding and baseboards, as well as panel moulding to frame the grasscloth wallcovering. Textured and fabric wallcoverings are a great way to dampen the echo in a large room, while applied moulding and trim add instant character to any space that feels like a big white box.

Let a favourite painting or print inspire your colour palette. • Display collected treasures and objets d’art. Pretty Petite Small bedrooms used to be the toughest to pull together. But with so many of us living in condos, plenty of small-space solutions now exist. Retailers understand that every square inch counts, so it’s easy to find beds with storage and narrow furnishings. Opt for a thin headboard or create the illusion of one with large cushions in upholstery fabric. For tall windows, I like velvet or blackout lined drapery panels because they block light and dampen sound, as well as add a layer of softness. To free up the top of the nightstand, use plug-in sconces and camouflage the cords with paint so they look built in. For closets that look custom, we trimmed IKEA Pax wardrobes with crown moulding and added hardware (see above). With Pax’s option for cabinets that are only 13 inches deep, you can maximize vertical space.

esigning a home that’s both a nurturing environment and beautiful isn’t a new concept, but it’s one that’s taken on even greater significance in the last two years. Whether we’re just noticing our homes more (because we’re spending so much time there) or we’re craving a sense of calm serenity within its walls, we’re increasingly aware that a healthy, harmonious home affects our mental and emotional well-being. If you find yourself moving your favourite chair to capture the sunlight better or dreaming up an entirely new spa-like bathroom, you know what we mean – and we’re with you! For inspiration, we’ve put together an overview of approaches to design that centre well-being, not to suggest you replicate any particular style, but to help you explore the question: what makes you feel happy at home?

JAPANDI The marriage of wabi-sabi and hygge or lagom might seem recent, but it’s said that the commingling of Japanese and Scandinavian design goes back to the mid-1800s, when Japan “opened” to trade with the West. It turns out that the two design philosophies are compatible, with their simplified forms, celebration of craftsmanship, thoughtful and judicious choice of decoration, and respect for nature. A Japandi environment (shown opposite) is welcome, especially today, because the aesthetic is calm, comfortable and uncluttered.
• WHY ADOPT IT? A wellcurated minimalist environment that also prizes comfort blends the best of both worlds, which seems appropriate for a look that marries two cultures.
• HOW TO GET IT? Quality furniture that will age beautifully is essential. Objects made from wood or stone, natural fibres like sisal and wool, and accents like unglazed ceramics are preferred. Neutral colours and modern furniture bring a sense of ease.

WABI-SABI This philosophy of life is said to have its roots in Japanese Buddhism and combines two principles: wabi (simplicity, rustic shapes, asymmetry, nature) and sabi (that which is imperfect and is weathered by time). Incorporating wabi-sabi in home decor (shown above) doesn’t mean adhering to a particular look. Instead, it is about being guided by its principles: respect nature (practise sustainability; nurture houseplants); incorporate furniture and accessories with patina; and relax in imperfect comfort with textiles like natural washed linens.
• WHY ADOPT IT? This thoughtful approach to decorating values simplicity, age, calm and contemplation. It liberates us from an insatiable desire for more and for perfection.

LAGOM You’ve likely heard of lagom. It’s a Swedish word meaning balance and moderation. More than any other approach to decor, lagom (shown opposite) is about being mindful of overconsumption, and creating a personalized environment that promotes happiness and balance in the home.
• WHY ADOPT IT? If you seek a lighter life where you consume less, where the superfluous is eliminated from the home, and where simple everyday pleasures are prioritized, lagom is for you.
• HOW TO GET IT? Be mindful; decorate with intention and make sustainable choices. Opt for well-made functional furnishings and a limited colour palette (try Nordic-inspired neutrals like pearly white and stone grey, with soft blues or beiges). Use mirrors to bounce light and create airier rooms. Accessorize with simple reminders of the beauty of nature, like a bowl of seashells or pebbles.

GRANDMILLENNIAL The trend to decorate grandmillennial or “granny style” (shown above) is a departure from the more minimalist looks we’ve discussed. Although at first glance it seems like a more-is-more look, at its heart is a similar concern for being a mindful consumer. The vintage and antique treasures that remind us of our grandparents’ homes encourage reusing instead of buying new. But grandmillennial isn’t about creating a period-perfect interior. Though the mood is nostalgic, there’s a millennial twist on tradition. Different periods are mixed, and often a modern piece will give the room a bit of edge. What we’re left with is the warmth and comfort that good memories bring.
• WHY ADOPT IT? It meets the economical requirements of the Y generation, who face the dual challenges of inflation and soaring real estate prices. More than that, it pays homage to what is familiar and comforting.
• HOW TO GET IT? Wallpaper, embroidered and fringed cushions, fine china (from vintage shops or inherited), floral motifs (especially those with historical pedigree like the designs of William Morris and Liberty of London), secondhand furniture. STYLEATHOME.COM MARCH 2022

people to be drawn to different styles, whether minimalist, modern, boho or traditional maximalist. Regardless of a client’s design style, we always start with the “decorate with intention” approach. With a maximalist, we would separate items into two main categories: “I absolutely love it” or “I can live without it.” The goal is to display your most meaningful objects that bring you joy every time you look at them. That will create a sense of comfort and belonging. Not only will this approach improve your mood and feeling, decluttering can also have a positive impact on your mental and physical health, and we are all for it.
KL: Are certain colours more conducive to holistic decorating? Can you recommend a good neutral and non-neutral paint colour?
AR: Colour affects your mood and behaviour, so it’s important to choose wisely to create the atmosphere you desire. If you aren’t sure where to start your design scheme, first decide on the feeling and mood you want to create – it could be fresh, calming, moody, luxurious or warm. Lighter colours are more airy and can make rooms feel larger and even brighter. Darker colours are considered more refined and make rooms feel warmer and more intimate. The goal when choosing colours is to create a feeling of wholeness and a connection to the space. For a neutral, Sherwin-Williams’ Agreeable Gray is great, and for a non-neutral, I like Farrow & Ball’s Green Smoke.
KL: Would decorating with vintage furnishings fit into a holistic home?
AR: Absolutely! Sustainability is a cornerstone of holistic design. Incorporating vintage is an environmentally friendly choice that gives an older item a second life, preventing waste. Also, no two antiques are the same, which makes your space unique and serves as a conversation starter with guests.
KL: Does technology have a place in holistic decor?
AR: Smart technology can support you, free your mind of clutter and simplify your life. It can help with creating grocery lists, reminders, and let you control lighting, thermostats, air purifiers and even playing relaxing music to create a calming atmosphere. The advancements of technology have made it possible to use less energy; for example, energy-saving appliances, electronics and lighting that are efficient and suit your personal style.
KL: How important is light and sound? AR: They are just as important as the physical things in a home. When used effectively, they can reduce stress and support mental
and physical health. Natural light improves our mood and supports our immune system to resist disease and the effects of stress. We love to maximize natural light, but adding adequate artificial lighting to create different moods and atmosphere is also key. With sound, when we’re exposed to constant noise it can cause stress, which triggers reactions in our body, including the secretion of certain hormones, such as adrenalin and cortisol. When designing, we incorporate soft furnishings that absorb sound, which makes your home quieter and more comfortable. If you can’t eliminate unwanted noise from outside, create healthier noise inside with music or a water feature. Music elevates our mood and can be comforting, mood lifting and healing. H
omeowners and custom-home builders Carlo and Nicole Muia wanted a clean, contemporary look for their King City, Ont., home. They also craved big, open, flexible-use spaces that would be clearly visible from each other. But keeping multipurpose rooms tidy and organized can be challenging, says Jennifer Backstein, especially with young kids (the couple have two). Tasked with designing the interiors for the whole house, she helped Carlo and Nicole mastermind storage solutions to keep things clutter-free. The key, says Jennifer, is planning. “A common conversation I have with clients is discussing exactly what they have to store,” she says. “My goal is to make it easy for them to tidy up and keep things out of sight.” Here’s how she helped the Muia family keep clutter at bay, in the most sleek and sumptuous way.

A Room of Her Own
Carlo’s dressing area (opposite) is sleek and open, but hidden behind those high-gloss black doors is a wealth of bespoke storage that was designed in advance to suit him. Against the striking backdrop of a single marble slab, open shelves provide a place to display shapely accent pieces and books.
Nicole’s dressing area (above) is roomy enough to double as a sitting room. Backlit niches create a showroom-style display for purses, while open corner shelves hold books, art objects and more purses. As with Carlo’s dressing area, Nicole’s closet space was carefully preplanned to provide ample storage for every item in her wardrobe.

he bones of this home theatre were already there when her clients bought their house in Oakville, Ont., says designer Kate Davidson of Kate + Co. Design. It really just needed the star treatment. Taking her cue from a quartet of celebrity portraits by Michelle Vella, an artist the owners know and admire, Kate added an ensemble cast of cushions in coordinating colours and textures, then set the scene with a giant black-and-white mural of the Hollywood Hills. But the real star of the show is the gigantic custom sofa, which can seat up to 13 movie fans easily; its 44-inch depth is comfy enough to sit through a double feature – or several.

Set Dressing Sliding walnut veneer doors allow the homeowners to open the room up to the rest of the lower level for extra seating during parties, or close it off to create a quiet, intimate atmosphere for getting lost in a film.

Why Be Shy? This family home in midtown Toronto says no to bashful and yes to brilliant.

Okay,
maybe a home can’t be described as an extrovert. But, in the world of houses, this one – with its pink-hued razzle-dazzle entry rug, jubilant lighting and ultra-fab finishes – is definitely the life of the party. Huge windows keep the natural light dancing, and sleek black walls and cabinetry play bold backup to the home’s fun chorus of pinks, lavenders, blues and reds. “This client is cool and funky. She loves colour and has hot pink highlights in her hair,” says designer Jodie Rosen. “She also has three kids, ages 12 to 16.” So, a fun factor was a must. Jodie’s take? Why not elevate the fun-and-colour mood by embedding it in a super-tailored and classic, almost glamorous, aesthetic? Working with her team, Jodie used bold expanses of black, white and neutrals to create some largescale wow moments, then layered in fresh hues at the end. “The client really trusted us to use our creativity, and I love how this house turned out. LEFT & BOTTOM For special occasions, there’s a dining room radiant with crystal, brass and sheen finishes. “When we found that hot pink and grey rug, I showed it to the client and she was so down for it,” recalls Jodie. OPPOSITE Visitors are quick to say “Wow!” when they see the living room’s black marble fireplace, followed by “Ahhhh…” as they sink into pale blush pink velvet armchairs to sip cocktails, or tread across the silk-and-wool rug, woven in hazy shades of pink and lavender. The fuzzy sofa is durable, so curling up to catch up with friends is a go. “And if you spill wine, it wipes right off,” says Jodie. “Keep in mind that black wil play differently depending on how much light comes into the home. Here, the kitchen has windows facing south, so we had a lot of leeway.”
“We pushed the limits with all-black cabinets,” says Jodie. “The wood in the herringbone ceiling is repeated in the archways throughout the house.” Facing south, the kitchen is a light box during the day. In the evenings, as the homeowner cooks with friends, soft light from black and gold globes warms the marble-look porcelain island. “The stools are cantilevered, so even though they’re black, they look light,” says Jodie. The channelled leather seats are edgy enough to look cool, and wipe-clean-enough to be practical for the teens who sometimes snack there. CABINETRY, Ant Man Woodcrafting & Design. When it’s mealtime, this table is where it all happens. “I wanted it to tie in with the black kitchen, but I also wanted it to look like a stand-alone piece,” says Jodie. The top is black marble-look porcelain with warm-toned veining to match the diamond-tuft leather chairs. “The starburst fixture is a nice contrast to the smooth globes over the island,” says Jodie. OPPOSITE When the homeowner gets up in the morning, huge windows brighten the primary bedroom. But when night falls, the room can be further darkened by the motorized black drapes. The cloud-like chandelier dangles from a 20-foot coffered ceiling. The oystercoloured bed is velvet and sits on a pink-and-cream rug. At the end of the day, the homeowner can drop a robe or sweater on the bench. Lounge time in the blush velvet swivel chairs makes for a serene reading spot after a long bath. Peeling back the layers and adding a trove of found treasures made this diamond in the rough sparkle again.

Hidden Charms “I
figured all this house needed was a little lipstick to make it look better,” says Edwina Grittani, recalling her first visit to the 1940s fixer-upper in Ontario’s Prince Edward County. “But during the inspection, the realtor just stood in the kitchen, shaking his head. Obviously, lipstick fixes were not going to be enough – this place would need major surgery!” But she and partner Ousama Rawi bought it anyway.
LEFT When Edwina Grittani comes home, she drops her keys and phone on a shallow shelf. “I made it from an old wooden pool-cue case,” she says. When she and partner Ousama Rawi are ready for a sundowner, Edwina tugs on a framed blackboard, which doubles as a secret door to a wine cupboard. Onions and potatoes from the farmers’ market get tossed into wall-mounted wire baskets she found curbside. At bedtime, she goes from a landing she stencilled in a mosaic pattern to stairs she stencilled with numerals. “We used gas pipes to create the handrail,” says Edwina. Edwina teetered atop a ladder more than once as she pulled water-stained acoustic tiles off the sunroom ceiling. But it was worth it. “The original tongue-and-groove ceilings were underneath!” she says. To brighten the room, she painted everything white and lined the walls in shiplap. Then she added black accents, including a mirror, lighting and round display shelf. “This room is great for guests. When they sleep over, they just roll the trunk/coffee table out of the way to pull open the daybed,” she says. “I refer to the house as the Onion House because of the astounding layers of wallpaper, flooring, ceiling tiles, drywall and carpeting we had to peel away,” says Edwina. Undaunted, she and Ousama stuck with it. Noting the home’s quirky layout, they embraced it. Discovering its fire damage, they erased it. And turning to lawn sales and salvage shops, they DIYed the decorating, then showcased it. “Fortunately, I gravitate toward intriguing oddities that can be turned into something entirely different, and I love old objects that have a captivating story,” says Edwina. Making the most of this, she paired her creativity with her can-do attitude to take on every design challenge that came her way. Her motto? “I will not be defeated.”
RIGHT Edwina tore up orange-toned laminate from the dining room floor only to discover…concrete! “I really wanted the dining room to allude to the kitchen, so I stencilled the concrete in a fun black and white pattern to match,” says Edwina. LEFT “We think the living room may have been part of a porch,” explains Edwina. To reclaim the space, she tore out a popcorn ceiling. The original wood ceiling was behind it, but parts were damaged. “Since I couldn’t use all of it, I created this new pattern with salvaged wood. I love the texture it adds,” she says. The chairs feature numerals and text, which echo the stencil work on the kitchen stairs. OPPOSITE “I am a lawn sale junkie and I found this old butternut table at a good sale by Lake Simcoe,” says Edwina. Its aged beauty and obvious pedigree didn’t keep her from surrounding the table with chairs and a light fixture that are more modern. And while most of us would never think to, Edwina installed old floorboards horizontally on the wall, which she painted black. “I love reusing things,” she says. “The pendant light in the back corner is suspended from a clothesline pulley.” CHAIRS, RUG, West Elm. RIGHT & OPPOSITE “When I discovered old wooden beams had been tossed into a garbage bin, I rescued them and turned them into the top of the kitchen island,” says Edwina. A vintage pendant over the sink is as much about charm as it is about lighting. The antique hutch wasn’t always this gorgeous. “It had this weird purple stain,” says Edwina, so she painted it to match the kitchen cabinets, then dashed off to her shed in search of boards to turn into shelves. BELOW “I thought, there must be a cavity back there somewhere,” says Edwina. So she swung hard at the wall with a sledgehammer and found a space that was the perfect size for a pantry. She added wood shelves and painted the backdrop black, giving the room attractive additional storage space.
“Almost anything you like, especially if it’s vintage, can be used to create something fun and unexpected.”

“The look is cottagey with a little bit of farmhouse, a sprinkle of rustic and a dash of industrial.” The little guest room fits two single beds. “My lovely friends in Toronto generously gave us the daybed. It was a creamy white, so I sprayed it black for some contrast,” says Edwina. She paired it with a metal sconce and inviting check throw. The apothecary cabinet is new but has a vintage vibe. After peeling back grey carpeting, Edwina discovered a plywood subfloor. Since this is the primary bedroom, she wanted something fresher, so she laid a brand-new pine floor, then painted it high-gloss white. For texture, she took the bed frame down to metal. Edwina’s suitcase collection, used here as a bedside table, hails from worldwide travels, as well as from her mom. Sconces with rope details are consistent with the home’s repurposed panache. RIGHT “That will do it,” thought Edwina as she hauled an old wooden ironing board from her shed to the laundry room. She topped it with a thick slab of reclaimed wood and a galvanized tub. OPPOSITE In the main bathroom, a modern bowl sink adorns the vanity, created from a painted dresser decked out with office-style hardware. “I love how the wall-mounted faucet saves counter space,” says Edwina. She made the shelf from barnboard and suspended it with rope. Disliking the large gaps between the floorboards, Edwina glued sisal rope in between, then coated the top with urethane. SINK, Rona. BELOW An old shoe mould holds a hand towel in the primary bedroom’s ensuite. Edwina stencilled the Moroccan-style pattern on the floor. “I told my best friend I was looking for a small dresser to convert to a vanity. She emptied her dresser drawers, and said, ‘Take it.’ Talk about a good friend.”

“I once had someone tell me our yard reminded them of France. I loved that image, so sometimes I let my imagination go there when we’re dining alfresco.”
OPPOSITE “The fence used to be pale blue. Thankfully, my brother and sister willingly rolled up their sleeves to give it a new look,” says Edwina. The sofa was created by adding a back to an old IKEA lounger. Edwina used fence boards, a chimney cap and oversized casters to make the coffee table. “The painted stump stools are from a tree we had to cut down,” says Edwina. Making

Made to Order “So, you have four people and a hockey bag pushing their way into a narrow room with no foyer. How does everyone fit and where does all the stuff go?” says designer Michelle Hurley. “This was a problem that I was passionate about solving.” Her solution: a mud room wall. It’s outfitted with hooks and baskets for everyone, and even has individual charging stations for phone and tablet storage. The floor and walls are tiled. “This wood grain tile is so practical for snowy and wet jackets,” says Michelle. fter 10 years of making do with an outdated floor plan, one Toronto family is finally jumping for joy – not just because their home’s new layout is swish, but also because there’s finally room enough to jump in the first place! “When the family bought the house, its super-narrow first floor was chopped up into several rooms, including a formal living room,” explains Michelle Hurley. But “formal” is the last thing you’d call the fun-loving foursome who live here. “They’re always laughing and dashing around together,” says the designer. “So we eliminated the living room and removed every wall on the main floor. That let us fit in a spacious kitchen at the home’s centre.” It’s tucked between a dining space with a vibrant banquette on one side and an upbeat family room on the other. A host of invigorating blues is sprinkled throughout. “The blue is such a fresh through line between the light-filled, free-flowing spaces,” says Michelle. “And the house is a great place for everyone to be together, even when they’re doing different things.” Whether that finds the family joking at high volume at the banquette, flopping onto the sofa after a long day, or snacking at the countertop, the result is clear: after a decade of trying to fit their family into this home, they finally have a home that’s fit for their family. Room for All “The herringbone sectional [see page 79] is extra-deep and extra-long,” says Michelle. “It’s the perfect solution to fitting an entire family into an already narrow and always busy family room.” A leather chair by the window swivels, tripling the viewing options to include the TV, a cozy fire and the great outdoors. The designer fell for the rug on first sight. “I was walking by a local shop when I spotted it in the window,” she says. “It stopped me in my tracks. I knew it would be perfect for this room.” The celestial blues intersect with coral bits that tie in nicely with the woven wooden blinds. Open & Shut Case “Especially in city homes, functional storage for families is crucial,” says Michelle. Pottery, trophies and candlesticks serve as display on open shelves, while cabinetry below hides less pretty objects behind closed doors. She surrounded the marble fireplace with wood millwork fitted with modern laminate doors. “The sleek style of these doors is in deliberate contrast to the more classic Shaker-style cupboard doors in the kitchen,” says Michelle. “When you mix it up a little, you get a look that’s more dimensional.”

The U-shaped kitchen features floorto-ceiling brick-shaped tile with a matte finish. “The colours and styles of the tile over the stove and on the peninsula overlap but deliver a richer look to the space because they are not exactly the same,” says Michelle. Old Meets New “Early on, I had the idea to incorporate antique wood doors for the pantry. They have a sense of age and break up the black colour of the cabinetry,” says Michelle. The kids hop up onto shapely leather stools at breakfast as Dad, the main cook in the family, grabs essentials from the wood shelves.

On Display A knee wall at the front entryway is fitted with custom wood shelving. It showcases a pottery collection and has room near the bottom for the parents to stash sunglasses and keys as they come through the front door. Bright blooms pop against the dining area’s azure banquette.
All Together “I was obsessed with finding the perfect shade of blue – not navy, not royal – for the banquette,” says Michelle. The 10-foot faux leather bench makes it easy for kids to crawl in and out. And when pals drop by, there’s plenty of room for all. The warm wood table with its brass base is surrounded by sleek chairs; the rug marries warm and cool tones. “The rug’s blues are a more watery version of colours in the family room rug,” says Michelle. Tucked In
Michelle replaced the original closets in the primary bedroom with a custom wall of storage. The crosshatch texture of the doors’ metal mesh openings is a mini-version of the pattern on the drapes. The room’s closets, floors and drapes were kept light and bright to offset the deeper tones near the bed.
“The clients loved the cocooned feeling of dark charcoal walls,” says Michelle. They create a dramatic backdrop for vibrant art and luminous throw pillows. Waffle textures in the bedding and antique pieces, such as the end tables, add interesting shadows and texture. “The antique end tables and trunk belong to the clients. By placing beloved objects in a brand new room, you bring an equal sense of history,” says Michelle.

Water Ways “This bathroom was definitely a his and hers moment,” says Michelle. “He likes to shower and wanted a lot of elbow room. She loves her baths and wanted to sink into deep water.” For the walls, Michelle was drawn to geometric tiles. “Unusual shapes result in a look that’s timeless,” she says. Conflicting Interests The vanity drawers provide a boon of storage. “I purposefully chose a traditional wood vanity to contrast with the black and white,” says Michelle, who then layered in brass fixtures. “I love using fixtures that are made of the same material and by the same manufacturers but are totally different in style.” The ones on the vanity are traditional, yet the ones for the shower are very modern.

Hocus Pocus To create a hidden laundry room in the basement, Michelle borrowed space from the furnace room. “You pull open the double bifold doors, and behold, it feels like a room, not a closet!” she says. “But what really makes the space is its tiled wall. They’re ceramic, but they look like tin. And since they’re away from the rest of the house, they can be their own thing.” The industrial pipe-style shelves are a play on the laundry nook’s location. Great Lines “We wanted to go bold and budget friendly for the kids’ bathroom on the second floor,” says Michelle. She made stripes by alternating inexpensive black and white tiles. Fill each tart shell with ¼ cup Herbed Hazelnut Dip. Strain the tomatoes from the olive oil (reserving the oil) and top each tart with approximately ¼ cup tomatoes. Drizzle the olive oil marinade over the tart and plate. Garnish with basil leaves, edible blossoms and herbs.
ALMOND & HAZELNUT TART SHELLS MAKES 6 SHELLS

cup raw hazelnuts cup ground raw almonds tbsp potato starch tbsp tapioca starch
1 tsp salt ½ tsp black pepper 2 sprigs thyme, leaves picked 1 tsp agave or maple syrup Olive oil, for tart moulds Note You need six round, removable-bottom tart moulds for this recipe, each approximately 3½ to 4 inches in diameter and ½ to ¾ inch tall. If you would prefer to bake the tart shells rather than dehydrate them, you can do that in a 350°F oven for 20 minutes; baking them will turn up the crunch! Place all the dry ingredients and the thyme in a food processor and blitz until it reaches as fine a consistency as possible. With the machine still running, add ¼ cup water and the agave syrup; continue to blend until everything is well mixed, stopping to scrape down the sides halfway through. Transfer the mixture to a large bowl and finish mixing by hand, making sure there are no dry spots and that everything is fully incorporated. Lightly brush the inside of your tart moulds with olive oil. Divide the dough into six and press into the moulds. Place the moulds
directly onto the dehydrator tray and dehydrate on high (160°F) for 6 hours. After 6 hours, separate the shells from the moulds and return them to the dehydrator for 6 more hours. Store in an airtight container lined with paper towel at room temperature for up to 7 days.
MARINATED TOMATOES MAKES 2 CUPS

Place all the ingredients, except the tomatoes, in a saucepot on low heat and cook for 10 minutes. Remove from the heat and let cool for 15 minutes, then pass through a strainer, reserving both the liquid and solids. Place the tomatoes in an airtight container and pour the liquid overtop (make sure it is completely cooled first). Allow to marinate for at least 3 hours in the fridge before serving; the longer the better. Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
HERBED HAZELNUT DIP HERBED HAZELNUT DIP MAKES 2 CUPS

Place the hazelnuts and 3 cups water in a bowl or 32-ounce Mason jar and cover. Soak in the fridge overnight for approximately 8 to 10 hours. When ready, strain and rinse the hazelnuts, discarding the soaking liquid. Add the soaked hazelnuts, garlic, shallots, salt, apple cider vinegar, ¾ cup water, nutritional yeast, and three-quarters of the herbs (basil, dill and chives) into a food processor. Blend until smooth. Add the remaining herbs and blend again until the herbs are incorporated but still visible. Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 week. recipe Elderflower Syrup (or find at a specialty food or liquor store) Zest and juice of 2 limes ½ cup sugar Combine all ingredients in a pot, stirring constantly over low heat until the sugar is dissolved. Remove from the heat and pour directly into a 4-x-4-x-2-inch-deep cake pan and place in the freezer. Every hour, stir the mixture with a fork to create frozen but fluffy ice shavings; repeat until evenly frozen and flaky all over. Use right away or store, covered, in the freezer for up to 1 month.

Chill a stemless wineglass. In a steel shaker, combine all the ingredients except the Elderflower Granita and lime zest. Fill with ice and shake, then double-strain into the chilled glass. Add just enough fresh ice to break the surface of the liquid. Using a fork, shave off 2 to 3 tbsp frozen granita and place gently on top of the ice in the glass. Garnish with freshly grated lime zest.

Combine the sugar with 2 cups water in a medium pot and bring to a gentle boil, stirring until the sugar is dissolved, then remove from the heat. Pack the elderflower blossoms in a sterilized 16-ounce Mason jar and pour the hot sugar water overtop. Allow the jar to cool, uncovered, at room temperature. Cover and steep the blossoms overnight, up to 12 hours, swirling or shaking the jar several times throughout (dried blossoms need only 6 hours). The flavour should be sweet and floral. Strain the blossoms from the liquid using a fine-mesh sieve. Store the syrup in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 month.

ROASTED CARROTS MAKES 6 SERVINGS
12 early season or young carrots, each about 8 inches long 3 tbsp olive oil 8 sprigs thyme, leaves picked Salt and pepper, to taste Preheat the oven to 400°F. Wash and scrub any dirt off the carrots; you do not have to peel or trim them. In a large bowl or pan, mix the carrots with the olive oil and thyme. Season with salt and pepper. Lay the carrots and thyme out on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Roast for 15 to 20 minutes or until the carrots are cooked through but still retain some crunch. Cooking time will vary depending on the size of your carrots. Serve immediately.
Add the dry mustard and preserved plums and continue to cook until the liquid has again reduced by half. Add the thyme and the soaked mustard seeds for the last 2 minutes, then remove from the heat. Store in an airtight container in the fridge until ready to use, for up to 1 week.

PLATING 1 recipe Roasted Carrots (see above) ¼ cup crumbled Shropshire blue cheese ½ cup Preserved Plum Mostarda (see below) Sweet cicely or other garden herbs, for garnish Lay out the roasted carrots on a serving plate. Add the cheese overtop and drizzle with the Preserved Plum Mostarda. Garnish with sweet cicely or garden herbs of your choice.
PRESERVED PLUM MOSTARDA MAKES 2½ CUPS

tbsp yellow mustard seeds, soaked overnight (see Note) 1 large onion, cut in small dice 4 cloves garlic, thinly sliced 3 tbsp olive oil 1½ tsp salt 1 tsp pepper 1 tbsp sugar ¼ cup fresh lemon juice 1 tbsp dry mustard 2 cups large diced preserved plums, liquid strained 2 tsp finely chopped thyme leaves Note Soak the yellow mustard seeds in 2 cups water for 12 to 24 hours. When ready, strain out the liquid. In a medium saucepot on medium heat, sweat the onions and garlic in the olive oil until they are soft and translucent.
