CLEVER USES FOR

Orange Peels

We squeezed some great ideas out of this favorite fruit.

3

Shine metal Rub the inside of an orange peel on fixtures like your sink faucet or showerhead. The peel contains D-limonene (also known as citrus oil), a compound that can remove other oils like grease and fingerprint residue and naturally buff metal surfaces.

1

Deodorize the oven To combat any lingering fish or meat smells after cooking, place a pan of orange peels inside your oven, set the temperature at 350°F and bake for 15 to 20 minutes. It will diminish the odor and give your kitchen a fresh citrus scent.

2

Fight stress Leave orange peels out to dry, then grind them in a food processor or blender until they form a fine powder. Sprinkle in your bath for a calming effect.

FUN FACT! The color orange was named after the fruit, not the other way around.

4

Ward off pesky insects

Whiten teeth In a pinch, rub your choppers with the inside of an orange peel. The D-limonene will temporarily brighten your smile.

Flies, fire ants, cockroaches and mosquitoes are not fans of orange oil. Place a few pieces of peel in bowls in the corners of your home to help keep the bugs at bay.

HAIR AND MAKEUP: NOEL KANALEY FOR ZENOBIA AGENCY.

I

t’s hard for me to admit this, but the first time I stole money from my bosses, I felt very little emotion. Nerves, some guilt, maybe. But not enough to stop me. It was 2006, and I was the office manager of a family-owned home-improvement business in Las Vegas. One afternoon I wrote myself a $2,000 check from the company account. It’ll be a one-time thing, I promised myself. But it wasn’t. Over the next two years, I swiped $98,000 more. If you’d known me back then, you’d have thought I was a regular mom. I lived with my partner and our sons, Jake and Nick, in a nice house in Las Vegas. On weekends I took my boys to their soccer games. Afterward we’d join the other families for a barbecue or a swim in someone’s pool. During the day, I was an attentive, loving parent. But by night, I was a compulsive gambler, totally addicted and out of control. I grew up in Mineola, NY, and started gambling in my teens, when my mom would take me with her to Atlantic City, NJ. Mom liked blackjack. Every month she’d drop a chunk of her paycheck at the tables. I didn’t realize it at the time, but she was probably an addict too. The trips were fun. I played the slots. But I could always leave them behind. Then I moved to Las Vegas in 1997 and started going to casinos

to meet people. One night, I gave video poker a try. Slots are all about luck, but poker is about strategy— I loved that. Soon I was winning or losing hundreds each night.

PEACE AT THE CASINOS Within a few months of picking up poker, everything that happened to me, good or bad, became an excuse to gamble. I’d go to the casino to celebrate or to blow off steam. After having both of my sons, I suffered from bad postpartum depression. That, plus working full time, keeping up the house and coping with a deteriorating relationship, was really stressful, which made me crave poker even more. The minute I sat down at the machine, I’d relax. And winning set me flying. I wanted to feel that high more and more often. Before long I was playing every day, running through my paycheck in a matter of hours. I maxed out credit cards, borrowed money from friends and hocked anything of value. Once, I stole a couple of my stepmother’s rings, figuring I’d win big and buy them back from the pawnshop before she noticed. Another time, I sold a heart-shaped locket my grandmother had given me on my 23rd birthday. Whenever I started losing, I’d crash. I broke out in sweats and developed headaches from grinding my teeth. Sometimes, on the drive home from the casino, I’d have to pull over and vomit from the panic.

I wrote myself a $2,000 check from the company account. It’ll be a one-time thing, I promised myself. But it wasn’t. Yet I never stopped. I felt the only way out of every hole I dug for myself was trying to win the money back.

TROUBLE AT HOME For a long time, no one knew my secret, not even my partner. I kept him in the dark by intercepting credit card statements and bills. But by 1999, two years into my addiction, loved ones began to see what was going on. I was acting strangely, not returning phone calls. Finally my partner noticed we were short on money and confronted me, and I confessed. His reaction was surprisingly calm; matter-of-factly, I told him I was going to Gamblers Anonymous (GA) and seeing a therapist (although I left out the part that after GA meetings, I’d go straight to the casino). I swore I’d quit, and I tried. I’d stay clean for 30 days, three months, half a

Battling the odds Of the estimated 5.3 million Americans with a gambling disorder, women ages 45 to 64 outnumber their male peers. Women are often drawn to solitary activities like slot machines and play to relieve stress or “dealwith feelings of

sadness or loneliness,” says psychiatrist Jon E. Grant, MD, coauthor of Why Can’t I Stop?. Unfortunately, compulsive gambling tends to become problematic more quickly for women than it does for men. The good news? Women

are more apt to seek treatment—and “those who complete it typically recover,” Dr. Grant says. If you or someone you know needs help, visit the National Council on Problem Gambling at ncpgambling.org.

year. But then something would happen—a blowup at home, an unforeseen bill—and I’d pick up right where I left off. In 2002, my partner had finally had enough and left me. I moved into a small apartment and our children shuttled between homes. I felt lower than low, useless and unworthy. But the worse I felt, the harder it was to stop doing the only thing that offered any relief. I’d hire a sitter and run off to the poker machine. I loved my boys—but I also resented them for keeping me away from my game.

HITTING BOTTOM When my mom died suddenly in 2006, I was devastated. The only one who knew how bad my gambling was, she’d given me money to pay my bills many times. I felt so alone. The night after she died, I went to the casino, budgeting only a hundred dollars—but by 6 a.m., I had blown more than $2,000. That was when I started embezzling. I’m sure that if I’d told my father I needed money, he’d have bailed me out. But I was embarrassed. In my warped mind, stealing felt like the only choice. Over the next two years, I manipulated the company’s computer records to hide my theft. Eventually the fear of being caught became so unbearable I decided to fess up. On September 10, 2009, I handed my boss some bank statements. “You’ll notice discrepancies in the account,” I said, numbly, “because I’ve been stealing. I’m a gambling addict.” She was stunned speechless. After I confessed, I went to a GA meeting for women and poured my heart out. My bosses pressed charges, and for the next 18 months, as I awaited trial, my friends from GA put gas in my car and food in my fridge, forwarded me job leads and went to court with me. Their

support gave me strength, and I prayed to God every day to make my compulsion go away. I never went to the casino again. In 2010, I pled guilty to theft and fraud and was sentenced to prison for two to five years. I’ll never forget the fear in my sons’ faces when I told them that I was going away for a while and that they’d be staying with their granddad and father. Jake was 11; Nick was 9. The look of pure terror in their eyes—I’ve never felt worse pain in my life.

A PATH TO RECOVERY Prison was humiliating—but I also felt a kind of freedom. I had no responsibilities and had plenty of time to reflect on what I’d done. I started going to services offered by God Behind Bars (GBB), a ministry that assists inmates and their families. Reconnecting with my faith helped me forgive myself. I served almost three years. After my release, I volunteered with GBB’s thrift store Castaways Resale, which offers job training to former inmates. They hired me, and now I’m the general manager. I do everything from creating displays to coordinating with other nonprofits. or lots of kids, summer break means pool days, ice pops and the absence of homework. But for many of the 15.3 million food-insecure children across America, no school also means fewer meals. Those struggling with hunger rely almost solely on the subsidized lunches they receive when class is in session. “They’re malnourished when they come back in the fall,” says Suzy Herrmann, a special-education teacher from Mansfield, TX. “They’re not ready to learn, and they fall further behind in class.” In 2007, Suzy was volunteering for a nonprofit called Common Ground Network when it was tapped to tackle the problem. She helped brainstorm the idea for Feed the Kids for Summer, a program that strives to fill the hunger void created when the school year ends.

Putting in the work One day a week throughout the summer, Suzy, her cochair Phil Stover and her team of volunteers fill bags with oatmeal, fruit cups, cans of tuna and other goods that children can easily make on their own while their parents are at

work. Each bag includes seven breakfasts, seven lunches and seven snacks, which local food pantries distribute to needy families. When the program began, they fed 2,000 children. Now, it’s up to 10,000. Sometimes funding is tight, but Suzy does whatever she can to spread the word. “I’m a big talker, so I tell everyone I know, apply for grants and send out donation requests to local organizations, parent-teacher associations and churches,” she says.

Encouraging reading One day in 2011, local teachers approached Suzy with another problem: After a summer with little mental stimulation, many of their students returned to school unprepared and unfocused. Suzy took her mission a step further and

SUPPORT FEEDING AMERICA

started a summer reading program. She collects books and brings them to the food pantries so kids can take a couple home with their groceries. “Several families have said to us, ‘We’ve never had a book in our house, and now we have a whole library!’” Suzy says. The group also gives incentives for reading, such as tickets to a local water park. Teachers have noticed a marked difference. “Their students are staying at the same level or growing, so it’s working!” says Suzy. “When I see how excited kids are once they receive the books and food, it goes right to my heart. It has been such a gratifying experience.” Visit commongroundmansfield.org to donate to Feed the Kids for Summer.

Woman’s Day and Feeding America have joined forces to fight hunger across the United States. To donate and learn more about Feeding America’s summer backpack and pantry programs, check out feedingamerica.org/womansday.

O

n a chilly April evening in 2000, my last year of high school, I had just left a mall on Long Island, NY, after shopping for prom dress accessories with a friend and my two younger sisters. Keeping the color of my dress a secret from them seemed so important at the time, but eventually I caved in, and said, laughing, “Well, I’ll tell you, in case I die or something.” My dress was pale canary yellow. I never got to wear it. On the way home, a vehicle going

the wrong way down the highway struck ours head-on. I instantly broke my neck in three places, suffering the worst injuries of everyone in the car. As I was being rushed to a local hospital, I stared down at my legs, which wouldn’t move. When I got there, a doctor told me that I would never again be able to feel anything from the neck down. During the next weeks in the hospital, I grappled with my fate. Complete sadness overwhelmed me because I knew my life would never be the way I’d dreamed. What about

college, getting married, having a baby? I envisioned being pregnant and on my delivery day, not being able to hold my newborn in my arms. The doctors would press this precious child to my face, simulating a warm embrace. This is how our hugs would always be, I thought. A few weeks later, my parents transferred me to a rehabilitation center in New Jersey, where I would spend most of the year as an inpatient, and an additional year as an outpatient. Instead of going to college, I was away from home doing intensive physical therapy. My mother, a longtime reader of Woman’s Day, would bring me issues to help get me through the arduous hours of being immobilized in a Halo brace. The issue that really stuck with me was from June 2000. The cover had a gorgeous cake depicting a beach scene, magical and delicious at the same time. childhood and happiness. I told myself that I was going to walk out of that hospital so one day I could bake it for my future baby. And I did. Week by week, I gained movement and sensation.

Every few months I would study the beach cake. On those hard days of physical therapy when I wanted to give up, I’d glance at the photo and my determination would be renewed. I spent a total of eight grueling years in outpatient therapy trying to regain the use and feeling of my limbs. Despite the doctor’s predictions, I can now walk—slowly and with permanent crutches—and I can go about my daily activities with limited use of my hands. And I fulfilled my other dreams, too: I graduated from Stony Brook University with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a masters in social

work. In 2003, I met a wonderful man, Geoffrey, and later got married. We had competed against each other in cross-country and track in high school, but fittingly, we met for the first time on the beach. The accident didn’t ruin my chances of having children, either. We had Gus a year after we were married. His first birthday cake was, of course, the beach cake. As I decorated it with candies, gumdrops and gummy rings, I took a step back, reflecting on everything I had and wept tears of joy. I held my son snugly in my arms and closed my eyes. I was so thankful for the ability to use my arms—not only to embrace my son, but also to make him this masterpiece for his birthday. Now I treat my two other children, Luca (born December 2013) and Aurora (January 2016),

Ice Cream D R E AM S

S’MOR ES ICE CR EA M PI E ACTIVE 35 MIN ✦ TOTAL 2 HR ✦ SERVES 12 COST PER SERVING 48¢

FOR THE CRUST

12 graham crackers 2 Tbsp sugar 7 Tbsp unsalted butter, melted FOR THE CARAMEL

¾ cup sugar ½ cup heavy cream, at room temperature Pinch kosher salt FOR THE FILLING

1 quart chocolate ice cream FOR THE MERINGUE

4 large egg whites 1 cup sugar ⅛ tsp kosher salt

Heat oven to 375°F. In a food processor, pulse the graham crackers and sugar to form fine crumbs (you should have 1½ cups total). Add the butter and pulse to combine. 2 Press the crumb mixture into the bottom and up the sides of a standard 9-in. pie plate or disposable 10-in. pie pan. Bake until golden brown, 12 to 15 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack to cool, about 30 minutes. 3 After the crust has cooled, make the caramel. Place 2 Tbsp sugar in a medium heavy-bottomed saucepan over medium-high heat. When the sugar starts to melt around the edges and turns amber (about 2 minutes), 1

stir gently and add another 2 Tbsp sugar to the pan. Continue to add the remaining sugar, 2 Tbsp at a time, stirring occasionally, allowing most of the sugar to melt before adding more. Watch carefully as the sugar darkens, stirring gently and only occasionally to help it melt evenly. 4 Once the caramel is a dark amber, remove from heat and gradually add the cream (the mixture will steam and bubble). When the bubbling subsides, gently stir to completely incorporate the cream into the caramel. If there are lumps, return the pan to a low heat and stir until melted. 5 Add the salt and let the mixture cool slightly (it should still be warm). Spoon the caramel on top of the prepared pie crust and freeze. 6 Prepare the filling. Allow the ice cream to soften in the refrigerator, 20 to 30 minutes, and place the bowl of a stand mixer and the paddle attachment in the freezer. Transfer the slightly softened ice cream to the chilled bowl and beat on low speed just until the ice cream becomes easy to spread. Spread evenly over the caramel layer and return to the freezer (at this stage it can be frozen for up to 3 days). 7 When ready to serve, make the meringue. Place 2 in. water in a medium saucepan and bring to a simmer. In the bowl of a stand mixer, whisk together the egg whites, sugar and salt until just combined. Place the bowl over, but not touching, the simmering water and whisk until just warm to the touch and the sugar is completely dissolved, about 3 minutes. 8 Transfer the bowl to the mixer fitted with the whisk attachment. Whisk on medium speed until stiff glossy peaks form and hold their shape, 4 to 5 minutes. 9 Spoon the meringue over the ice cream and, using the back of the spoon, create swirls and swoops. Toast the meringue with a torch or under the broiler for a few seconds until the surface is lightly golden brown. Serve immediately.

hen it comes to sleep, too little is no good—but neither is too much, according to new research in the International Journal of Cardiology. Study participants who logged fewer than 4 hours were 36% more likely to die from heart complications compared with those who slept between 6 and 8 hours. Meanwhile, researchers also found that regularly sleeping more than 8 was linked to a higher risk of heart disease (too many zzz’s could be a sign you’re worn out from other heart-impacting issues, like obstructive sleep apnea). And the biggest surprise: The risks that came along with too little and too much sleep particularly affected women.

THE TAKEAWAY Getting at least 7 hours of sleep is essential. If you feel that your body now needs more than 8, don’t fret. Just keep tabs on how you feel. Have you started to notice that you’re tired during the day, even after routinely getting 9 or so hours per night? Then pay a visit to your doctor, who can help you rule out any health issues.

LEAKAGE

If you’re in a tough situation, do you turn to food to calm down? A reason to break the habit: A Finnish study looked at 5,000 people and found that stress eating was linked to obesity, especially in women. FIGHT BACK Try the 5-5-5 breathing method When you feel the urge to overeat, take a breath in for a count of five, hold it for five, then release for five. Repeat for 1 minute.

The signals between the brain and the bladder can get out of whack when you’re feeling anxious. In turn, it might make you feel like you have to go too often. (This is called an overactive bladder or urge incontinence.) FIGHT BACK Come up with a plan of action Talk to your doc about managing your condition and your stress. And ask about Kegel exercises to prevent future leaks.

THIS MON TH: FITNE SS

A hectic schedule and a health scare left this single mom too drained to stay active. WD paired her with a fitness pro to help change her body and her life.

AGE: 45 HOMETOWN: Dallas “I felt like I had fallen so far behind where I used to be that I couldn’t get ‘back on the horse,’” says Brigitte, reflecting on her fitness funk. Like many moms, she made raising her daughter, Mackenzie (now 17), her top priority, but in doing so, she stopped working out, which shook her confidence and happiness. Brigitte was ready for a serious comeback.

Brit Rettig First, she got a promising new job offer at an electricity company in the Dallas area, so she and Mackenzie made the move from their longtime home in Chicago. “My treadmill wouldn’t fit in our new apartment, so I left it behind,” she says. Not that it would have gotten much use. Within the first two weeks of arriving, Brigitte was working 11-hour days. “With no time to shop or cook, I went from making meals to picking up burrito

bowls with cheese, sour cream and guacamole on my way home. We’d eat late and go right to bed.” Over the next few years, as Brigitte and her daughter built a new life in Texas, the stress took its toll. “I completely lost my motivation to exercise,” Brigitte says. “I knew I’d feel better if I worked out, but I couldn’t get myself to do it. I was too tired in the morning. And any free time I had, I wanted to spend it with Mackenzie.” Stretching after workouts keeps Brigitte from feeling achy the next day.

Then, in November 2014, a routine mammogram showed a mass in her left breast. Thankfully, the lumpectomy revealed it was stage 0, and she didn’t need chemo or radiation. But the experience shocked her back into focusing on her health. Finding herself squarely in her mid-40s was a wakeup call, too. “Weight was settling in all the wrong places, and I’d completely lost my muscle tone. I used to be proud of my fit arms, but those were long gone.”

Woman’s Day matched Brigitte with Brit Rettig, a certified group fitness instructor in Dallas. Rather than guide Brigitte back toward her rigorous boot camp workouts, Rettig designed a plan that Brigitte could easily integrate into her current lifestyle. The routine focused on a combination of strength training to build lean muscle mass and interval

walks to increase her heart rate. At their first meeting, Brigitte was crushed when she couldn’t eke out a single push-up—“that was my all-time fitness low,” she says. “But even though I felt defeated, it was a step forward because I was certain I didn’t want to be in that spot anymore.” After two weeks on the plan, Brigitte’s clothing fit the same, but she felt more energized, confident and better able to handle work stress. “When I exercised in the morning, I’d arrive at the office with mental clarity. I felt sharper.” Every few weeks, Rettig introduced new moves so Brigitte was engaged and challenged. Within a month, she replaced her 5- and 8-pound weights with 10s. “I started to see more definition in my arms and felt my tummy tightening up.” Brigitte made some upgrades in

the eating department, too. After her morning workout, she refuels with a banana and a protein shake (before, she’d either skip breakfast or get a vanilla latte and reducedfat coffee cake). Lunch is grilled chicken, veggies and nonfat cottage cheese. For dinner, she replaced fast food with salads that she preps on Sunday. “I throw lettuce, sugar snap peas, mushrooms, colorful peppers and nuts in a plastic container, and put some cooked chicken breasts in another. Each night, I scoop out my dinner,” says Brigitte.

Although Brigitte and Mackenzie are close, the duo never exercised together. But when Mackenzie, who has always preferred concerts and books over sports, heard that her mom was starting a new

STRENGTH-TRAIN TO SLIM DOWN “When you lift weights, you create tiny tears in your muscles,” says trainer Rettig. “As blood and cells rush in to repair them, lean muscle mass is created.” Bonus: That repair process takes energy, meaning your body burns more calories, even at rest. “You don’t have to hoist 50-pound dumbbells—just choose a weight heavy enough to make your muscles tired by 15 reps.”

They also crank out squats and planks in their garage, breaking for brisk walks or runs around the block. After a month, Brigitte lost 5 pounds and is now up to 20 push-ups. As a reward, she treated herself to some pretty new workout gear. With Mackenzie’s departure for college looming, Brigitte is thankful for the “amazing bonding experience” from the workout sessions and she’s filled with hope for a healthy future. “I’m a big believer in the saying, ‘If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got.’ I’m doing something new, and in return, I’m getting stronger, I feel incredible and I’m keeping myself healthier, both for Mackenzie and for myself. Beat the 3 p.m. Slump Nutrition expert Joy Bauer, RDN, shows you how to put more pep into your afternoon with a simple three-step plan.

STEP 1: POWER UP

Choose your snack wisely. Eating the wrong food may cause a crash that leaves you feeling even more sleepy and lethargic than before. So skip the sweets and junk food, and use this nutritious formula to mix and match a week’s worth of energizing, satisfying snacks instead.

occurs halfway between waking up and going to bed, on your circadian clock. The result: less energy and more blahs. Before you hit the vending machine—or the pillow—use these steps to increase your energy instantly.

(about 40 calories)

2 oz turkey 1 string cheese Nonfat Greek yogurt

1 tsp nut butter 2 slices avocado 1 Tbsp nuts or seeds

2 rice cakes ¾ cup whole-grain cereal 1 apple

STEP 2: GET UP If you’ve been planted in a chair, it’s time to get the blood flowing and send some oxygen to your brain. A study from British researchers found that midday activity improved people’s moods, concentration and their ability to handle stress. Even small amounts of low-intensity exercise (a stroll around the parking lot or a quick stretch every hour) can help.

STEP 3: DRINK UP Dehydration can masquerade as fatigue, so sip a glass of cold water to help you keep a clear mind without tacking on extra calories. If you want a little boost, skip coffee and reach for black or green tea, which has enough caffeine to give you a slight edge, but not so much that it will keep you awake all night. Two ways to make the best cup of energy- and health-boosting tea: OPT FOR CITRUS Squeeze lemon into your cup for flavor instead of using milk, as dairy may inhibit the absorption of good-for-you compounds in tea. LET IT STEEP Studies suggest that the ideal steep time is at least 2 to 3 minutes, so make sure your mug sits for a bit before drinking.

Try not to eat within two to three hours of your bedtime, and avoid alcohol and big, heavy, spicy meals, especially late at night. Get into the habit of ending dinner with a glass of water, which will wash down digestive acids that might start to creep up. Also, elevate the head of your bed or use a wedge pillow to reduce the abdominal pressure that causes reflux. HARNEET WALIA, MD, sleep expert, Sleep Disorders Center, Cleveland Clinic

THE PHYSICIAN SAYS…

HEARTBURN OR HEART ATTACK? Acid reflux symptoms can be remarkably similar to those of a heart attack. If you experience chest pain along with shortness of breath, nausea, sweating and/or light-headedness, call 911 and seek medical treatment right away.

THE NUTRITIONIST SAYS…

Focus on shedding pounds There’s a clear link between being overweight or obese and having gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), a chronic case of acid reflux. GERD happens when the valve between the stomach and the esophagus doesn’t shut properly, allowing digestive acids to splash back up. Extra body fat, especially in the belly, can increase pressure on the stomach and the valve, and worsen heartburn. But the good news is that losing weight can make a big difference. A study in Obesity found that 65% of overweight or obese subjects who lost about 30 pounds in six months eliminated all of their GERD symptoms. ALISSA RUMSEY, RDN, spokesperson, Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics

Medications called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) help ease reflux by reducing the amount of acid made in the stomach. But a number of recent studies show a connection between them and health issues like pneumonia and chronic kidney disease. It’s the extended use of PPIs that’s causing the most concern, especially for those who only have sporadic heartburn. So, focus on making lifestyle changes first. Then, for the occasional flare-up, try antacids like Tums; for more relief, consider H2 blockers like Zantac. Still no relief? Buy a two-week PPI pack. If you need it longer, see a gastroenterologist for a personalized treatment plan. SHOSHANA J. HERZIG, MD, MPH, physician, assistant professor, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center

Cannonball! How to make a big splash this summer.

1

OK, jump! As soon as you hit the pool’s surface, the initial splash occurs, creating a spray that fans out and hits everyone around you. As your body descends into the water, an air cavity forms. Displaced water tries to flood the empty space, but it can’t fill the cavity fast enough. The result? H2O shoots straight into the air, making a second splash.

2

Create the perfect drop. For a really dramatic impact, you’ll need two things: speed and size. To travel faster, launch off a diving board rather than the side of the pool. When you’re ready, jump high into the air and round your body without clamping it too tight as you fall.

3

Soak ’em good. To drench a certain area of the pool—say, your unsuspecting kids sitting on the left ledge—angle your body in the opposite direction and form a nonspherical shape (stick your elbows or feet out slightly, for example). You’ll shoot water toward the sides of the pool instead of upward.

STANISLAW PYTEL/GETTY IMAGES.

SAFETY CHECK! First make sure the area is clear, and don’t dive in headfirst if the pool is under 8 feet deep.

Answer Your Money Questions

DEBT DILEMMA

We want to pay down Beth our debt Pryor ($35K in consumer and $97K on our mortgage). To accomplish that, should we refinance our home or sell it? I pick option C: none of the above. People usually don’t start talking about selling their homes to pay off credit card debt unless they feel completely stuck. It’s like a logjam: They get so frustrated that things aren’t moving fast enough, they want to throw a stick of dynamite into the mess to get things going again. Taking out a home equity loan to pay off consumer debt won’t solve anything. You can’t “pay off” debt by taking out another loan. All you’re doing is shifting your debt from your credit cards to your house, so you’re not gaining ground. If you were planning on selling your home anyway, then sure, use some of the proceeds to pay down what you owe. But don’t forget that moving creates other expenses, such as closing costs and what you’ll spend to hire movers. And if you’re buying a new house, you’re also going to need to have enough money

for a decent down payment. Here’s what I suggest instead: Roll up your sleeves, go on a budget, cut your lifestyle to the bone and attack your debt like a crazy person. If you want to clear it completely, your best weapon is your income. List your debts from smallest to largest by balance

and declare war on the smallest one first. Throw every penny you can at it. Take extra jobs, hold a garage sale, whatever it takes. Once you pay off that smallest debt, redirect payments to the next one. This is called the debt snowball method. It takes some time to build, but it works.

DON’T CHARGE AHEAD

How can I shop online without a credit card? KAREN DREHER, Northport, NY

The convenience of online shopping is awesome, but it’s also really easy to overspend. With the click of a button, your money magically disappears. Charging those purchases is even more dangerous because it can pave the way for credit card debt. With a credit card, you’re just delaying the payment—and usually adding interest on top of that. Luckily, shopping online without a credit card is pretty easy. For example, you can use gift cards,

Karen Dreher

which are available for purchase at most grocery and retail stores. Take advantage of them whenever you can, like after your birthday or Christmas. Or, buy some for yourself with cash. Just be sure to avoid the ones that charge an activation fee or incur monthly maintenance fees (store-specific cards tend not to tack on those extra charges). And the great thing about gift cards is that they’re built with limits: When they run out, they run out, so you can’t go beyond your budget.

FOR LOVE OR MONEY

Sherri Christensen

I’m in a long-term relationship and am wondering, what are your thoughts on prenups?

KRISTIN ALLEN HALL OF FAME ACROBATIC GYMNAST

SHERRI CHRISTENSEN, Sioux Falls, SD

I remember a woman who called in to my radio show years ago and told me that her fiancé wanted her to sign a prenup so she couldn’t take his classic car if they ever divorced. I told that caller to run from the guy—he cared more about a stupid car than he did about her! Sherri, I’m generally not a fan of prenuptial agreements. For years, I told people to not even consider getting them. I think raising the issue at the beginning of a marriage sets up the idea that money is more important than the relationship. Planning for a divorce before you get married isn’t where your head should be! Now, after coaching some extremely wealthy families, I’ve

started to bend a little. When one person is bringing substantial assets into the marriage (think millions)— and the other person is not—I do recommend discussing prenups, to protect both parties. But for most couples, a prenup doesn’t make sense. Instead of talking about it, sit down with your future spouse and make sure you’re on the same page when it comes to money. Is he a saver or a spender? Do you love to do the monthly budget, or do you think it’s a chore? If you agree on your financial priorities, you will be fine when you’re married. Just be honest with each other, and remember that you both have a say in your finances. Doing your monthly budget together after you say “I do” will help you keep the conversation going.

Just can’t stand to spend another year in debt? Need that new grill now? Reach your goal in a jiff with secrets from power savers who know how to marshal up money quick. B Y S A N DY M . F E R N Á N D E Z

MONTH DASH STRATEGIZE WHEN If there’s a time of year when your community is packed with events, consider gearing your power-save to take advantage of earning opportunities. Rent out your driveway through the parking app Parkzilla (parkzilla.net) if you are on your town’s Fourth of July parade route. Or hold a garage sale in late August, when returning college students are hunting for back-toschool bargains on housewares, clothing, books and supplies.

SPREAD THE WORD Let friends and family in on your plan. “I told everyone what I was doing so they could encourage me,” says Kayley Samela, 30, of Calgary, Alberta, who did a one-month dash in 2015. Pals will be less inclined to ask you out for expensive meet-ups, like dinner or shopping.

ASSESS YOUR PANTRY Zoe Alexander of Los Angeles didn’t go grocery shopping for two weeks when she was trying

to save. “I realized how much food I already had,” she says. So she got creative with meals like frozen butternut squash and lasagna noodles. “It was yum!” she says.

FIND YOUR $$$ A HOME If your bank allows it, set up a bucket in your savings account—it’s easy to create and shut down and lets you see your progress in real time. Or use an oldfashioned piggy bank. You’ll be less inclined to steal from it if you have to break it open.

If you want to put away a few hundred dollars and only have four weeks to make your goal, every day has to count. Don’t bog yourself down with budgeting. Instead, adopt simple rules like no eating out and no unnecessary buying, and make sure to do something every day to come up with a little more cash.

MONTH SPRINT SCAN YOUR SPENDING Anna Newell Jones, author of The Spender’s Guide for Debt-Free Living, recommends starting your sprint as she did hers in 2010: by checking bank statements for unexpected leaks. “I knew I had a problem spending online, but I had no idea I had a problem with Chipotle!” she says. When Zoe Alexander performed the same exercise, she was surprised to see “how much my 9-yearold was spending on Angry Birds!” she says. To corral expenses, use the free app Trim, which combs your spending activity for recurring withdrawals. Nix any of them by sending Trim a simple text and you don’t have to worry about all that money going down the drain.

CRUNCH NUMBERS In August of last year, Yolanda Troche, 31, who works for the Edison, NJ, police department, decided her credit card

A six-month sprint gives you more time to build toward a bigger payoff at a less frantic pace. Budgeting counts here, since slashing can reap months of savings. “It’s long enough to get some traction, but not so long that you can’t see the finish line,” says blogger David Carlson, author of the book Hustle Away Debt. debt was definitely not following her into the new year. Using an online payment tracker, she figured out how much she would need to put toward her debt each month to obliterate it by her deadline. Then she set up autopay and volunteered for every additional overtime shift she could manage at work. “By doing that and not eating out,” Yolanda says, “I reached my goal.” Her new objective: to create a $10,000 emergency fund—just by working overtime.

CASH IN ON A GOOD REPUTATION As services like Lyft (ride sharing) and TaskRabbit (running errands) grow more popular, competition for gigs is getting tougher. To land jobs, build a profile full of great reviews. Six months gives you enough time to build a following. On TaskRabbit, “taskers” with 98% positive reviews “are hired more than six times as

often,” says CEO Leah Busque. And that sense of community will work for other sites, too. Keen on decluttering your wardrobe? Kimberly Smith, 37, sells her gently worn clothes on Poshmark. “If I share other sellers’ listings with my network, they return the favor for mine,” says the Rochester, NY, mom. She will also provide a discount to anyone who buys multiple items from her, giving them an incentive to purchase more. Her profile boasts more than 300,000 followers, and she has made about $1,500 in six months on the site.

SEPARATE OUT YOUR SAVINGS Unlike the shorter dash, for this mid-length run, you may want to create a new online account that is not connected to anything you already have, suggests Devan Goldstein, a banking expert at Nerdwallet. This will help you resist temptation to dip into the funds.

MONTH M A R AT H O N GUARANTEE YOURSELF AN EARLY WIN To stay on a strict spending diet for more than a few months, you’re going to need the wind behind you. If you’re dealing with debt, tackling your smallest balances first (as WD columnist Dave Ramsey suggests on page 110) can give you an early boost. And find other ways to start your spree with a bang. Get rid of a costly gym membership—or cancel cable or your landline.

SELL ON A SCHEDULE Most people have plenty of salable clutter in their houses: A survey last year found that more than 50% of Americans are overwhelmed by the sheer amount of stuff they own. “If you tell me to go do something ‘whenever I have the chance,’ I’ll never get around to it,” says Budgets Are Sexy blogger J. Money. A new tool in the Google Calendar app helps you find the time to get things done. Simply label

your goal (“post on Craigslist”), choose how often (“once a week”), how long (“15 minutes”) and the best time (“evening”), and Google Goals will find an open evening for you every week and block out time on your calendar. Then, renew the Craigslist post weekly, lowering the price until the item sells.

You can keep your money fairly accessible and your risk low with certificates of deposit (CDs) on sites like mybanktracker .com, bankrate.com and nerdwallet.com. You know the old-school strategy of emptying change into a jar? At the end of a year, you can put away oodles without ever missing the money. You can leap over the hurdles! Savers who have done this agree: After a brief honeymoon phase comes the hardest part of a multi-month savings endeavor. “My first three weeks, I was rocking it,” says Anna Newell Jones. “But after about a month, the novelty wore off. My friends were sick of hearing that I couldn’t spend money, and it got harder for a while.” Plan for this low by arranging a small treat for yourself every few weeks, like a meal out. The good news, says Newell Jones: “After that, savings started becoming a habit, and things got easier again.” And just keep reminding yourself that the satisfaction of crossing over the finish line will be well worth it.

Saving for an entire year can seem like a very long time: If you don’t pace yourself, you might burn out and end up quitting entirely. Rather than stressing about how much further you have to go, focus on achievable, nearer-term objectives.

Your senior pet has special needs. Here’s how to keep him healthy for years to come. BY GILLI A N A LDR ICH

DOUBLE YOUR VET VISITS Schedule well visits every six months, as opposed to every year, and be sure your vet is doing a “senior” blood test—checking liver and kidney functions—at least once a year. Also, ask about vaccine titers (if your pet has enough antibodies, she may be able to skip her vaccine booster, which can be unnecessary for an aging pet). At home, do a noseto-tail massage to spot any new lumps.

SOOTHE ACHY BONES If Sadie’s stiff after sleeping, she may have a joint condition. (One in five dogs has osteoarthritis, as do a third of all cats, but it usually isn’t detected until the animal is older.) Make sure she has a soft bed, and consider a nonelectric heating pad such as the Achy Paws Warming Mat (from $19.99; thegreenpetshop .com), which uses her own body’s warmth to comfort her.

June 2016

FEED HIM RIGHT Research shows that obese dogs live up to two years less than those at a healthy weight. So if your pooch or kitty is chunky, choose a senior-formula food. These tend to feature a lowercalorie chow with added nutrients. For regular-weight dogs, look for food with the phrase complete and balanced on the label. Aging pets need high-quality food, since they don’t digest as efficiently as they used to.

BOOST HIS SYSTEM Many vets will recommend slowly introducing supplements into your pet’s diet—including glucosamine with anti-inflammatory effects for arthritis and omega-3 fatty acids for skin, brain and immune system health. One possibility: FetchFuel ($29.99 for 36 servings; fetchfuel .com), which has products that contain these nutrients in a tasty flavored sauce that will liven up their kibble.

CATS AND KIDNEY DISEASE This chronic disease affects one in three cats and is commonly caught too late. Ask your veterinarian about the Idexx SDMA blood test annually. It identifies kidney disease months to years earlier, sometimes at no added cost to you. Early detection can possibly extend your cat’s life.

WHAT IS CONSIDERED “SENIOR”?

A: He may be. Just like humans , cats and dogs sometimes develop dementia in old age. They may start yowling, mix up day and night and generally act disoriented. There’s no cure, unfortunately, but your vet can offer antianx iety medication to calm him or a prescription supplem ent to try to boost brain function. Help soothe your old friend with snuggles, massages and a set schedule for eating and sleeping.
