WHAT’S ON
Spring/Summer 2017
Hello and welcome. I’m truly excited about this season and pleased that we’re bringing some of what I think are the greatest theatre makers around today to Huddersfield. At the 2016 Edinburgh Festival I saw outside the box (p6) and joan (p10) and thought they were fantastic – I can’t wait for lbt audiences to see them. I’m pleased to welcome other new companies and artists to the lbt too – tiata fahodzi with good dog (p6) and Obra Theatre Company with their adaptation of Ted Hughes, gaudete (p7). Alongside these new partnerships, we continue relationships with some of our audience’s favourite companies – Original Theatre Company return for the first time since 2011 with their Ayckbourn-esque comedy invincible (p5), Opera della Luna bring their latest irreverent tale (p4), and Pilot Theatre (p8) and the John Godber Company (p9) also provide the season’s big drama offerings. Our In Motion series sees some familiar names too with 2Faced Dance Company’s run (p13) and an extraordinary version of pinocchio by Jasmin Vardimon (p14). We also welcome our biggest circus show ever – the truly spectacular super sunday (p15). I look forward to seeing you at the theatre this spring and summer.

CAN YOU DESCRIBE YOUR ROLE WITH CREATIVE SCENE? As Creative Producer I work with the talented communities in the north of Kirklees to provide great art experiences for local people. This can involve anything from putting on shows in pubs and community centres, to working with community-led festivals to develop their arts programme, to supporting artists to create new work that can tour, putting Kirklees on the map for excellent art. CAN YOU FILL US IN ON THE PAST TWO YEARS SO FAR OF CREATIVE SCENE? We have been laying the groundwork to deliver an ambitious programme of work, exploring new ways of presenting the arts in the places people live, work and play. The team has been busy creating projects with our group of community commissioners, ‘SceneMakers’ – we’ve packed houses in local pubs, lit up town centres and warmed up with fiery outdoor events to name just a few. FOLLOWING THE NEWS THAT CREATIVE SCENE HAS SECURED A FURTHER £1M ARTS COUNCIL ENGLAND FUNDING, WHAT’S NEXT? Next year I’m looking forward to a new play based on the inspiring Batley Bulldogs girls team, more multi-lingual spoken word events in It’s a Word Thing, an Indian inspired performance from Urban Playground featuring local young people, and a floating women’s arts centre on the canal.

Mum’s promised him that bike so even when school or homelife bites, he knows to keep his chin up, his head down and his shirt clean. Because in the end, everyone who’s good gets what they deserve. Don’t they? Britain’s leading African theatre company tiata fahodzi present Arinzé Kene’s delicately observed and fearlessly told tale, set in the early noughties, which chronicles growing up in a multi-cultural community and the everyday injustices that drive people to take back control. Because even the most patient among us can’t wait forever.
Liz Rothschild is a performer, celebrant and award-winning burial ground owner. NORTHERN BALLET
GOLDILOCKS & THE THREE BEARS THU 13 APRIL
A fresh and funny retelling of the traditional story and an ideal gentle introduction to theatre. Jack lives on a small farm with his mum and very little to eat. He likes to talk to the birds, his cow and anyone who will listen. Imagine his surprise when he swaps his cow for some magic beans and starts to hear a whispering in the breeze and a giant rumble in the sky...
Goldilocks is a mischievous little girl with hair as bright as gold. Always on the look-out for an adventure, one day her curiosity leads her to a house full of many surprises. With a family of friendly bears, a beautiful blue bird and bowls of delicious porridge, this ballet is just right!
Charming and inventive with plenty of interaction, an enormous beanstalk, bags of gold and a smelly old giant, jack and the beans talk is a cautionary tale about what might happen if you throw things out of the window.
With sell-out performances and hugely successful CBeebies adaptations including Ugly Duckling and Tortoise & the Hare, Northern Ballet’s Short Ballets for Small People are not to be missed. Bringing this classic children’s story to life, goldilocks & the three bears is the perfect opportunity for your little ones to enjoy live ballet, music and theatre for the first time.

Remember when people thought the earth was flat? Once upon a time enormous creatures walked the earth, creatures that became known in Victorian times as ‘dinosaurs’. dinosaur detectives is a fascinating journey of discovery, fun and conflict surrounding the first fossil finds of Mary Anning, William Buckland and Gideon Mantell. A historical story about looking for dinosaur bones, combining puppetry with projection and shadow theatre.
Biff is not like ordinary dogs. He doesn't do dog stuff like weeing on lampposts, scratching his fleas or drinking out of toilets. If you throw him a stick, he'll just look at you like you're crazy. No, Biff is no ordinary dog. Biff likes moonlight and music and walking on his tiptoes. You see, Biff doesn't think he's a dog, Biff thinks he's a ballerina, which is all very well...
