Autumn/Winter 2018-19

WHAT’S ON

Hello and welcome. I hope you will enjoy our new autumn season which is full of ambition, curiosity and celebration. We are delighted to welcome back some of the country’s biggest touring companies – Northern Broadsides return with Dario Fo’s political farce they don’t pay? we won’t pay! (p7) and English Touring Theatre complete our three year partnership with their contemporary production of othello (p5). There’s also spectacular dance from Motionhouse – performing their electrifying piece charge (p12) and Phoenix Dance present the hugely popular Windrush: Movement of the People as part of their 2018 mixed programme (p13). Following on from the success of our first ever A Festival we have three new performances which explore our personal

and social challenges (p10-11). On the main stage there is cutting edge live and digital performance by Unlimited in their show future bodies (p6), which investigates extraordinary body enhancement technologies at the edge of scientific discovery. As we approach the festive season we travel the world of magic and imagination in our third lbt pantomime, aladdin (p8-9), promising more laughs, music and sparkle to share with all the family. We hope you will find all your favourites and some surprises inside and we look forward to seeing you this autumn.

KAREN O’NEILL Deputy Director

THE LBT PEOPLE TOM BLAKEMORE, Technical and Premises Manager

TELL US ABOUT YOUR ROLE AT THE LBT I oversee the technical aspects of all in-house and visiting shows here at the theatre. From making sure sets will actually fit in the building to advising how the most modern and technically demanding shows can be realised in our space. As Premises Manager I am also responsible for the day to day running and upkeep of our beautiful 200-year-old building. WHAT'S THE MOST INTERESTING SHOW YOU'VE WORKED ON AT THE LBT? My favourite shows to work on are always the ones that stretch our building and technical capacity to the limit, in a good way. Installing an eight metre ‘Wheel of Death’ on our main stage for Race Horse Company’s Super Sunday last year was certainly fun, and having a go in it was even better! WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO IN THE NEW SEASON? The variety of our programme means we get to work with a lot of different styles of performance and technical requirements, which always keeps things interesting. Motionhouse’s charge and Unlimited’s future bodies look like they will incorporate a lot of innovative technology to immerse our audiences. Our in-house pantomime is also always good fun to work on. I look forward to gifting our Aladdin’s carpet the magical power of flight.

This is a show about belonging. About tribes and families. About the place you belong because you were born there; the places that are in your blood but also the places you adopt; that you pretend are your home and the places you change yourself to try and belong in. It’s about class mobility. And regional identity. And being a Thatcher’s child. It’s about education and 'making good’ for yourself. And maybe about how that can leave you exiled from the place you started. With nowhere to quite belong. It’s about always being an imposter and trying to remember how to speak in your own voice. OFF THE CUFF THEATRE COMPANY

FOUR COMPLETELY UNRELATED PLAYS MON 15 – WED 17 OCTOBER

From the country's favourite playwright comes the country's favourite play.

What do a cat bowl, fairy lights, a wine bottle and a computer all have in common? Absolutely nothing.

An unruly bunch of bright, sixth-form boys in pursuit of sex, sport and a place at university are being taught by a maverick English teacher at odds with the young supply teacher and a headmaster obsessed with results.

Exploring the themes of strained family and marital relationships, sexuality and the rise of artificial intelligence – four completely unrelated plays is a two hour showcase of new material, from four emerging writers.

Performing on the main stage for the first time, Dick & Lottie (Arrivals & Departures, Bedroom Farce) present this sharp and zany Ayckbourn comedy.

Huddersfield Thespians (A Streetcar Named Desire, Murder, Margaret & Me, Offices & Gentlemen) return with Alan Bennett's classic play. Full of staff room rivalry and the anarchy of adolescence, the history boys provokes questions about history, education and their purpose.

Off the Cuff Theatre Company were formed in 2016 by three graduates from the University of Huddersfield, with a focus on the nurture and discovery of new talent. Having produced their first professional show in April 2017, a rendition of Unnecessary Farce by Paul Slade Smith, they are now working with new material to create a thrilling and original showcase.

ROGER DAVIES & HIS BAND

TRIBE

Huddersfield Jazz mark 30 years of bringing top quality jazz to Huddersfield with a concert featuring Claire Martin, Ray Gelato and the Dave Newton Trio.

After enjoying a succession of sold-out concerts throughout 2017, Roger Davies & His Band invite you to celebrate with them as they perform live on the main stage for the first time at this very special show.

This autumn, the uk’s original touring taiko tribe returns to the road with a brand new show of skill, stamina and red-hot rhythms to stir your soul.

FRI 21 SEPTEMBER

Claire, seven times British Jazz Awards winner and former bbc Radio 3 presenter, is among the top jazz vocalists on the planet, according to Jazz Times. Ray Gelato, ‘the Godfather of swing’, is a jazz, swing and jump blues saxophonist, singer and bandleader. Their show, A Swinging Affair, celebrates their album, We’ve Got a World That Swings, and is not to be missed.

SUN 11 NOVEMBER

SAT 22 SEPTEMBER

Roger Davies has established himself as one of today's most engaging songwriters through five solo albums and performances around the uk. Accompanied on stage by his dynamic band, audiences can enjoy new arrangements of his signature songs including Huddersfield Town, Into the Sun, Brighouse On Saturday Night and Wear Your Poppy with Pride, plus lots of brand new material.

As Mugenkyo approach their 25th year as Europe’s longest established taiko organisation, they celebrate the growth of their tribe of performers from across the globe, with the latest captivating performance of sharp synchronisation, mysterious masked choreography and sumptuous soundscapes, all wrapped up in a breath-taking display of high energy and powerful rhythms on huge taiko drums. PREMIERE

One of the great storytellers, Ralph McTell, is now celebrating more than 50 years on the road. Known for his virtuoso guitar style, he is primarily a prolific and gifted songwriter. With a style that invites you into a unique world, he weaves a narrative that is both significant and poignant. Ralph made his debut in 1968 with the album Eight Frames a Second and in 1974 the release of Streets of London earned him an Ivor Novello Award. In 2002 he was presented with the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award at the bbc Radio 2 Folk Awards.

harriet is a new music-theatre piece depicting the life and impact of 18th century abolitionist Harriet Tubman, who escaped her life as a slave and devoted herself to saving others through the Underground Railroad – a system of safe routes used to break out slaves and help them reach the free states. Composed and conceived by internationally celebrated composer Hilda Paredes, this ambitious narrative details Tubman’s journey from captivity into activism, considering both the suffering she endured and the spiritual experiences that spurred her on. Presented as a monodrama and scored for voice, violin, guitar, percussion and electronics, the opera is typical of Paredes’ ability to create deeply intense work out of something meticulous and refined.
