Volunteers Mission
The LMH Health Volunteers Organization shall assist and support LMH Health and its patients, staff, physicians, and visitors in providing support for the delivery of quality healthcare in accordance with the objectives established by the institution. The LMH Health Volunteers Organization shall be an integral part of LMH Health and shall exist exclusively for charitable purposes.

The LMH Health Volunteers Board met in March 2021 and proposed that the 2020-2021 officers and Committee Chairs continue their terms until we are able to gather for an Annual Meeting (Fall 2021).

Year in Review Documentaion of Historic Closure of Volunteer Program due to COVID-19 Pandemic In January 2020, the COVID-19 virus was spreading rapidly across the globe. Kansas saw its first confirmed case in early February, and Douglas County had its first confirmed case on March 17, 2020. Almost immediately, LMH Health, in conjunction with Lawrence Douglas County Public Health, began efforts to minimize the spread of the virus in our community. This included shutting down the LMH Health Volunteer Program for the remainder of 2020. As a result, Douglas County had a relatively slow spread of illness and thankfully, our local healthcare system was never overrun by sick patients. In early 2021, community members are beginning to get vaccinated and community numbers for COVID -19 illnesses have greatly decreased. As a result, we are celebrating the return of volunteers to LMH Health in 2021!
LMH Health Volunteers: 12 Months of Changes Start of 2020: Over 450 Active Volunteers contributing hours January 2020: ⚫ Escort call logs show volunteer Escorts took over 100 calls per day, with 70% of the calls related to outpatient traffic. ⚫ LMH Picture Committee seeks photo submissions to stock the new LMH West Campus full of artwork. ⚫ Gift Shop celebrates record sales for the 2019 holiday season!
Volunteers sent messages of encouragement to staff, which were displayed on the wall next to the Gift Shop.
⚫ Lauren begins engaging students who participated in Tapping Our Leadership to build a Student Volunteer Advisory Council.
February 2020: ⚫ Quarterly Coffee with presentation from Derrick Hurst about Crisis Center work, as well as Volunteers and Staff of the Quarter awards.
⚫ LMH gets first potential COVID patient, resulting in a press conference and regional media attention. Patient ends up testing negative but gets us thinking about the impact COVID might have at LMH Health.

2020-2021
⚫ Limited entrances to LMH with mandatory screening for all patients and staff. April 2020: ⚫ Annual Meeting and Celebration is cancelled. ⚫ Scholarship committee meets virtually and selects 2020 awardees. Scholarship presentations at the schools are cancelled but scholarship winners acknowledged via email. ⚫ Volunteer messages of hope for staff are displayed on the LMH Health Volunteer display wall next to the Koffee Korner.

⚫ Gift Shop assists Human Resources to put together gift baskets for employees as a way to boost morale and spirits.
⚫ Proposed changes to the Junior Volunteer program to make it a year-round program instead of the focus on summer months.
May 2020: ⚫ Some patient services begin to reopen at about 25%.
⚫ LMH Student Committee in process with review of student policy, shadowing process, and intern on-boarding requirements.
⚫ No volunteer activity. Allyson and Lauren alternate their schedule to cover the Information Desk. Raina and Amy furloughed with Gift Shop and Mario’s still closed.
March 2020: ⚫ Special Projects Committee planning for Annual Meeting in April. ⚫ Training on new Revenue Cycle system with Go Live date proposed for late April.
June 2020: ⚫ Patient services slowly increase.
⚫ March 12: released all Junior Volunteers
⚫ Raina and Amy alternate weeks working in the Gift Shop.
⚫ March 17: Douglas County sees its first confirmed case of COVID.
⚫ Gift Shop reopens for personal and window shopping, no walk-in customers.
⚫ March 18: released all College, Adult, and Nurse Volunteers and closed the LMH Health Gift Shop and Mario’s Closet.
⚫ Intern program moves to Education and Learning Services.
⚫ March 22: Stay at Home Order issued by Douglas County.
⚫ Lauren furloughed end of June and for the month of July.
⚫ As surgical and N95 masks become a precious commodity for clinical staff, community members, including LMH volunteers, begin making and donating fabric masks for non-clinical staff to wear. LMH Health Volunteer Services
July 2020: ⚫ Mask mandate for Douglas County begins July 1 and for the entire state of Kansas on July 3. 4

A walk-by parade celebrated Joanne Hurst’s retirement from the LMH Health Board of Trustees.
⚫ Proposal to reopen Volunteer program postponed due to increase in COVID cases in the community.
⚫ Lauren working from home, with time split between Volunteer Services and Douglas County Crisis Center project.
⚫ The Volunteer Finance Committee worked with the LMH Health Foundation to secure funding for 8 Staxi transport chairs for the new LMH Health West campus.
⚫ Allyson working Information Desk and helping to schedule screeners for the entrances. September 2020: ⚫ The Penny Jones Golf Tournament, the Grand Opening ceremony for LMH Health West, and the Hearts of Gold gala are all either cancelled or moved to virtual events due to the rise of COVID in the community.
August 2020: ⚫ LMH Health College Volunteers assisted with mass testing for faculty and staff at the University of Kansas. The COVID test clinic was set up at the new LMH Health West Campus, making this group of volunteers some of the first to be at the new location!
⚫ LMH Health Volunteer Board gets a private tour of new West campus about a week before it opens.
⚫ Six LMH volunteers participated in a video shoot with the Marketing team at the new LMH Health West campus.
⚫ Sept 14: LMH Health West Campus opens for business, starts seeing patients with same restrictions as main campus.
⚫ Many volunteers signed up with Human Resources to help LMH families in need of tutors or childcare as online school resumed.
⚫ Virtual uniform sale fundraiser for LMH Health Volunteers offered to employees. ⚫ The LMH Health Administration invited community members, staff, and volunteers to a walk-by parade celebration to honor Joanne Hurst’s service on the LMH Health Board of Trustees.
⚫ Amy and Raina both working regular schedule with Gift Shop open 10am-4pm Monday through Friday for personal and window shopping customers, no walk-ins. Annual Report

Flu shots for volunteers were offered at a drive-through clinic in October 2020.

October 2020: ⚫ LMH Health Gift Shop opens for one-at-atime walk-in customers with limited hours from 11am-2pm.
⚫ Community Pantry opens just outside of the Emergency Department, stocked by LMH staff with food and personal care items.
⚫ LMH hosted a successful drive-through flu clinic for volunteers to receive their flu shot.
December 2020: ⚫ Santa Hotline for staff and volunteer families to talk to Santa over the phone instead of meeting him in person at LMH.
⚫ 4 part-time and 1-as needed paid patient transporters begin at LMH Health, all of whom were previous volunteers, to help maintain the movement of patients and visitors through the hospital, clinics and physician practices.
⚫ Amy and Raina decorate the Gift Shop for the holidays with steady traffic from staff and patients for personal and window shopping. ⚫ Dec 16: the first round of COVID vaccinations arrive at LMH Health and Shannon Fletcher, Director of Respiratory Therapy, is the first staff member to receive the vaccine.
⚫ LMH Health Volunteer Board, the Volunteers Services staff, as well as Colleen Browne, VP of Human Resources and CEO Russ Johnson caravan through Lawrence to award our three Volunteers of the Year with their long-overdue awards for 2020!
⚫ Plans for COVID testing and vaccination ramp up at year’s end, with opportunity for volunteers to receive testing through LMH.
November 2020: ⚫ Homeless camp opens in the Woody Park space, just north of LMH.

Volunteers and Mentor of the Year Awards Due to the Volunteer program being closed for most of 2020, we did not select the Volunteer of the Year awards or Mentor of the Year to be presented this year. Financial gifts to the hospital 2020 The LMH Health Volunteer Board funded $11,000 to purchase wheelchairs for the LMH Health West Campus. 2019
The LMH Health Volunteer Board voted to fund the remaining $55,000 installment of the pledge for $250,000 for the Cardiac Cath Lab renovation.
2018
The Auxiliary Board voted to make the third installment of $65,000 toward the pledge of $250,000 for renovation of the Cardiac Catheterization Lab and Cardiovascular Services initiative. We have a remaining $55,000 left on this pledge.

Scholarship awardees- 2019 - 2020 School Year The LMH Health Volunteers award three new high school students a $1000 scholarship, renewable for a total of 4 years for students who are anticipating healthcare majors and who maintain a B average GPA. We also award a KU School of Nursing scholarship on alternating years as requested. The following students have received scholarship contributions this past school year:
