Dear Friends of LMH, About five years ago, I was asked whether I would consider joining the LMHEA board, stepping in for Bob Frederick who had tragically passed away. Of course, my wife, Beth, and I were familiar with LMH. Our biological daughter was born there. I had had knee surgery at LMH. And we had received excellent care at our community hospital. Many of our friends have had similar experiences to ours. But it wasn’t until I joined the LMH Endowment Association board that I truly understood what a remarkable hospital we have in our community. During the 40-plus years I’ve lived in Lawrence, I’ve watched our hospital grow and expand into a place that should be the envy of all residents of cities our size. Soon after I joined the board, I realized: • LMH receives no financial support from the city and county. That was a surprise to me at the time. • How important LMH is in serving all community members, those who can pay and those who cannot. • How responsive the LMH management team is at addressing issues that arise. • How positive and dedicated the physicians, nurses and staff are at meeting the needs of patients and their families at times of great need. • How dependent LMH is on a strong endowment to meet those needs that LMH itself cannot meet. An institution like LMH attracts and retains the best and the brightest — and equips them with the tools they need to excel at their jobs — because of donations of money to the Endowment Association. • What fun it can be to be surrounded by 17 other active and dedicated board members working as a team to address the financial needs of LMH. A board can only do so much, we all have other jobs, thus, the implementation of decisions needs to be addressed with the help of the LMHEA staff. What a team! We are so lucky to be able to work with Kathy, Tracy, Caroline, Earl and Erica and the many volunteers. When I was invested as president of LMHEA for 2014, I quoted Warren Buffet: “Someone’s sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago.” Beth and I have decided that we wanted to plant more trees, metaphorically speaking, by helping build up the endowment at LMHEA. We wanted our contributions to live on and generate needed resources, not just this year but well into the future. We believe the LMH endowment needs to grow so the hospital staff can continue to provide excellent patient care as we navigate through an uncertain future in the health care industry. FINANCIALS In 2014, LMH Endowment Association received nearly $3 million in contributions from individuals, families, groups, corporations and foundations. Nearly $1.5 million was distributed in 2014 for patient care, Lawrence Memorial Hospital program and services support, education, and administrative and fundraising costs, as well as the Endowment Association’s commitment to hospital construction. LMH Endowment Association closed 2014 with assets of $10.5 million.
