A New Era Supporting the Future of Healthcare in Our Community
2019 ANNUAL REPORT
Gifts at Work ADVANCING A NEW ERA OF HEALTHCARE IN DOUGLAS COUNTY •
Over the last few years, LMH Health has built a robust collaboration with organizations throughout Douglas County to create a network of support for patients in crisis. Donor funds provided for construction of five new safe rooms in the Emergency Department, ensuring patients can recover from crisis in a calm, quiet environment as they begin recovery.
•
Gifts to the Mother/Baby and Pediatric departments supported the purchase of an enhanced security system and specialized pediatric X-ray technology.
•
Thanks to golfers at Penny Jones, the Foundation was able to purchase
all new EKGs for the hospital and clinics — more than 35 in total.
• The Parkinson’s therapy program has been a favorite among patients and donors alike. These classes began almost three years ago, and now that the word is out about the impact they are making, the program is growing very quickly. •
Thanks to the support of generous donors, LMH Health East Heights Family Health Clinic opened in the fall of 2019, expanding access to healthcare.
The Heart of the Matter A New Era in Caring for Those in Need
LMH Health has an amazing legacy rooted in equity and compassion. Almost 100 years ago when Elizabeth Watkins made the gift that established Lawrence Memorial Hospital, she did so with the expressed intent that it would provide exceptional care to all, and that “no person shall be excluded on account of race, physical, social or financial condition.” That sentiment and a century of honoring it, including the $25 million of charitable care we provide each year, is what makes this hospital special. —Russ Johnson, LMH Health President & CEO
INVESTMENTS IN CHARITABLE CARE At LMH Health Foundation’s 50th Anniversary Celebration in June, LMH Health President & CEO Russ Johnson announced that he and his wife, Isabel, have pledged a $50,000 gift to the Help & Healing endowed fund. The Help & Healing Fund helps patients in need with expenses for medications, medical equipment or other necessities for healing and recovery after a hospital stay. It helps people take control of their health and keeps them out of a crisis situation. The Foundation expanded the fund in 2019 to address food scarcity, health screenings, medical equipment and transportation. Since then, support to patients in need has increased by 27 percent.
We want to reach the community when and where it is convenient for them. —Allison Koonce, LMH Health community outreach and engagement
COMMUNITY COLLABORATIONS As LMH Health works to address social determinants of health in our community, a major focus is food insecurity. LMH Health’s community outreach and engagement team and Just Food are collaborating in two innovative ways. Each month at Just Food, LMH Health conducts free blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar screenings. Also, LMH Health emergency department employees and social workers identify at-risk patients and give them a food kit from Just Food upon discharge.
EXPANDING ACCESS Opened in fall 2019, LMH Health East Heights Family Care Clinic improves healthcare access throughout the entire community and serves the residents of East Lawrence and beyond. Largely funded through private gifts to LMH Health Foundation, the clinic is located within the Independence, Inc., building near 20th and Haskell.
A New Era RECORD-BREAKING COMMUNITY SUPPORT Dear friends, This past year marked the 50th anniversary for the LMH Health Foundation. You helped us celebrate in a remarkable way, providing a record amount of philanthropicsupport for our community hospital — nearly $4.2 million dollars in 2019. This support is especially meaningful as LMH Health navigates an ever-changing healthcare landscape. While CEO & President Russ Johnson and the LMH Health Board of Trustees ensure our hospital and clinics are evolving to meet the challenges of the industry, your contributions provide a margin of excellence in patient care. Just as LMH Health made significant investments in the future of healthcare for our community, so too did our donors. As we look ahead to this new era in healthcare, we do so with confidence and optimism in our hospital’s leadership and direction. And thanks to you, the LMH Health Foundation is playing an ever-more important role in ensuring the very best in compassionate care, right here in our communities. Thank you, Jason Hoover 2018-2019 President, LMH Health Foundation Board of Directors
I am thankful for this opportunity to work in an underserved part of Lawrence and reach families who have previously had a difficult time accessing health care. —Dr. Ashley Bloom, the first family physician at the East Heights clinic
Excellence in Patient Care A New Era in Oncologic Treatment
SURVIVING AND THRIVING With the national population of cancer survivors growing, comprehensive cancer survivorship care is vital those living with and through their diagnosis. The vision of LMH Health Oncology & Hematology’s new survivorship program is to develop a comprehensive, whole-person model of survivorship care across the continuum of cancer care. A generous gift from the late Frank Becker and his wife, Barbara, helped fund a full-time nurse navigator position for the program. Frank was treated at the LMH Health Oncology & Hematology Center for a little more than four years. “LMH Health has grown into an outstanding cancer treatment center,” Becker said in 2018. “Anytime I’ve visited, I’ve never heard anyone say a discouraging word. I’ve grown to see how good LMH Health is, and it needs a little extra help from all of us.”

Today I am a five year cancer survivor. In the past five years, I have welcomed two new grandsons, cheered on my husband as he finished the New York City marathon and celebrated with the Kansas City Royals as they won the World Series at Citi Field later that night. Five more years allowed me to take a helicopter ride to the top of a glacier in New Zealand, snorkel in the Great Barrier Reef, spend the night in a castle in Ireland and kiss my husband goodnight 1,825 more times. I owe a debt of gratitude to the people within the LMH Health Surgical, Oncology, Radiology, Radiation Oncology and Pathology departments. Their kindness and expertise are unparalleled, and I was lucky to have them in my corner. Thank you, thank you, thank you for the five years!! I think I have used my five years wisely. If I am lucky enough to get five more, I will try to do the same. —written by Gail Vick on August 13, 2019
