Advancing health equity and cultural humility through education

In 2022, all LMH Health providers participated in newly required training to improve health equity Physicians and advanced practice providers now take courses in inclusion, diversity and equity (ID&E)-related material as a part of their annual education

This change was made to ensure providers are well equipped to meet the health system’s purpose of providing care to all, regardless of a patient’s race, culture, ability to pay and other social determinants of health

Lynley Holman, MD, FACOG, a physician at Lawrence OB/GYN Specialists, said she was incredibly proud of this commitment by the health system .

“There will always be new ways to learn to manage bleeding or use a tool,” said Holman “But this was a commitment made by the medical staff — and for the medical staff — to ensure that learning about all patient populations and addressing the social determinants of health is a priority ”

These courses range from in-person classes with guest speakers to online trainings on how providers can improve patient care through an ID&E lens . Educational sessions cover understanding implicit bias, recognizing health disparities, demonstrating cultural humility, supporting an inclusive workplace and more .

“This is a notable step in the right direction and illustrates the investment LMH Health is making to create awareness, identify inequities and address health disparities at the front lines of patient care,” said Erica Hill, the director of LMH Health Foundation Finance and Strategic Initiatives as well as the director of LMH Health Equity, Inclusion and Diversity

Thanks to your exceptional generosity, LMH Health Foundation received a record $14.3 million in philanthropic support for LMH Health patients, programs and initiatives in 2022 .

$6.5 million was raised in support of the LMH Health Cancer Center expansion project .

LMH Health Foundation has transferred more than $16 million to support patients and hospital priorities over the last five years .

Dana Anderson makes $10 million gift commitment

Lawrence resident Dana Anderson made a $10 million gift commitment to the LMH Health Foundation The commitment is the largest in both the foundation’s 53-year history and the hospital’s 102-year history

LMH Health has renamed the Lawrence Health Plaza the Anderson Health Plaza in honor of Sue and Dana’s longtime and generous support

Earl Reineman, major and planned gifts manager for the foundation, said the gift is a tremendous honor for the hospital and the community

“The leadership and generosity that Dana and Sue have provided over the years has been nothing short of inspirational,” said Reineman “In so many different ways, the Andersons have supported the hospital’s commitment to exceptional care for all ”

“The gift will support vital hospital needs,” said Anderson “And it’s the perfect way for the family to recognize the giving spirit that Sue worked to instill in all of us . We know how proud she would be to see this happen She always recognized the importance of LMH Health to the quality of life in Douglas County ”
