A message of gratitude Since it began in 1969, the LMH Endowment Association has played a vital role in ensuring exceptional healthcare in our community. From its original founders to its most recent board of directors, this organization has helped donors connect with LMH Health in new, meaningful and evolving ways. Your generous support has played a key role on our journey.

Jason Hoover

As LMH Endowment celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, we have formally changed our name to LMH Health Foundation. We know that this remarkable organization was built by loyal donors over many decades. Your ongoing support and partnership have meant so much for healthcare in our community. I am pleased to share that LMH Health Foundation provided a record amount of support in 2018, transferring more than $3.5 million for LMH Health initiatives. This is an important milestone — one we could not have reached without the considerable support from our donors. Thank you for your support of LMH Health and the communities it serves. With gratitude,

Jason Hoover, LMH Health Foundation Board of Directors President

Vision for the future The future of healthcare is rapidly changing. Boundaries are disappearing, and hospitals are becoming more integrated into their communities while taking a more holistic approach to health. Consumers are demanding choices, seeking convenience and lower costs.

Russ Johnson

With your help, we are positioning LMH Health for success now and in the future. We will become more integrated into the community. We will balance a focus on healing patients with an equal emphasis on wellness and prevention, and keeping our community healthy in a sustainable way. As you’ll read throughout this report, donors are our partners in this important work. LMH Health Foundation is vital to sustaining our purpose of being a partner for lifelong health. Together, we made great strides in 2018. Our vision would not be possible without the remarkable support of our community. We look forward to another year of growth and transformation in 2019. Thank you for supporting this vision and helping us to be a partner for lifelong health.

Russ Johnson, LMH Health President & CEO

Fulfilling a strategic vision: Henrys support LMH Health West Campus H & S Holdings Company, led by local businessman Rodger Henry, made a $1 million gift to LMH Health Foundation in 2018 for the proposed Orthopedic Center of Excellence, part of the new LMH Health West Campus. The new state-of-the-art outpatient campus, which will have a strong focus on orthopedic and sports medicine, will include surgical capabilities and a full outpatient therapy area for traditional and sports-oriented services. “Our community is at a crossroads, and I think it is important to keep moving to the next level of excellence in medical care,” Rodger said. “I am thankful LMH Trustees and CEO Russ Johnson are leading LMH Health in construction of the LMH Health West Campus. The emphasis on outpatient care and same-day surgery is an emphasis on the new best practices in orthopedic care, and Sheryl and I are glad to support that excellent care in our community.”

Celebrating 50 years of philanthropy

The purpose of LMH Health Foundation is rooted in the thoughtful model of philanthropist Elizabeth Watkins. On October 26, 1929, Elizabeth Watkins gifted real estate to the City of Lawrence to build a modern, 50-bed brick hospital, pictured on the previous page. Through this generous gift, “The Lawrence Memorial Hospital” was significantly advanced. Later, in 1937, the hospital was expanded again with funds donated by Watkins. She stipulated when making the gift that the hospital shall be for the benefit of all and that “no person shall be excluded on account of race, of physical, social or financial condition . . .” That commitment endures to this day. Elizabeth Watkins

LMH Endowment Association founders, 1969

Three decades later, in 1969, Lawrence Memorial Hospital Endowment Association was incorporated by its founding directors: Dr. Monti Belot, an internist; Anne “Petey” Cerf, an involved and generous community member; Dr. Phillip Godwin, an anesthesiologist and family physician; Dr. Laurance Price, a pathologist; and Dr. Ralph R. Reed, an internist. Following a record-breaking year in 2018, LMH Health Foundation will celebrate a half-century of inspiring community and philanthropic support for LMH Health throughout 2019. Together, we will continue to provide a margin of excellence for our non-profit community hospital, ensuring an ever-increasing quality of care for all.

Help & Healing: A community of support In 2006, LMH Health Foundation established the Help & Healing Fund to help patients in need with expenses for medications, medical equipment or other necessities for healing and recovery after a hospital stay. The Help & Healing Fund provides up to $300 or a 30-day supply of medication that LMH Health physicians have prescribed. In 2018, LMH Health Foundation provided support for 541 requests from patients for the medications and medical equipment they needed, a nearly 40 percent increase from 2017.

Erica Hill

“It’s so important to take the medications that we prescribe, and if our patients can’t afford their medications, they are at risk,” said Marc Scarbrough, MD, LMH Health Chief of Medical Staff. “I give to the Help & Healing Fund because it goes directly to these patients who are in need.” This assistance, which is critical to ensure patients stay on the path to healthy living and safe healing, is funded through private gifts and the LMH Health Employee Campaign. “LMH Health is dedicated to improving health outcomes for all. The Help & Healing Fund is one way to achieve that,” said Erica Hill, finance and operations manager for LMH Health Foundation and LMH Health equity champion.

Playing the long game: Penny Jones Open Golf Tournament 2018 The 37th annual Penny Jones Open Golf Tournament, held on September 7, 2018, raised nearly $130,000. Proceeds from the tournament will benefit LMH Health patients in perpetuity through an endowed fund to support areas such as mother/baby, therapy services, behavioral health, palliative care and pediatrics.

Gifts at work: A record year of support for LMH Health In 2018, LMH Health Foundation provided a record amount of support, with $3.5 million transferred for LMH Health initiatives. This was achievable only through the generous support our donors provided. Read on for examples of LMH Health initiatives that our donors made possible.

Memorial gifts support Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation Many community members recently donated to Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation in memory of the late Jack Arensberg, who enjoyed his experience as a patient in the department. The funds were immediately put toward the purchase of an EKG telemetry monitor, used to monitor patients’ cardiac rhythm during exercise.

12

Donor funds purchase new breast health technology The Foundation transferred $100,000 in donor funds to purchase new SPY Fluorescence Imaging technology for LMH Health Oncology. This technology allows surgeons to better identify patients who are candidates for immediate breast reconstruction. The use of SPY technology in breast reconstruction has been shown to help reduce the incidence of complications.

Free mammogram vouchers available for people In need Thanks to funding from Rock the Block – Kick Cancer, our annual oncology fundraiser, LMH Health Foundation provides mammogram vouchers for people who may not be able to afford them. Patients may call the LMH Health Breast Center to request a mammogram voucher at 785-505-3300.

New spirometers gifted to LMH Pulmonology A gift from Lilian and Fred Six, made in recognition of exceptional care provided by Dr. Charles Yockey, helped fund the purchase of two new laptop spirometers, which are used to measure lung function. These newer spirometer models import data directly into electronic records and flow into physician notes. Currently, the information is manually entered, so this is a welcomed improvement within the pulmonology department.

Stop the Bleed kits for all schools in nearby communities Thanks to an initiative from a trauma coordinator nurse in the LMH Health Emergency Department, Kenna Young, all 22 schools in the Lawrence public school district soon will receive Stop the Bleed kits, an important step toward public health and safety. She recently visited Lawrence schools to educate school nurses and PE and health teachers on how to stop bleeding. The Foundation used donor funds to purchase the Stop the Bleed kits for each location. We are grateful for the opportunity to help create safer schools.

2 01 8 : A RECORD-BR EA K I N G YEA R OF SUP P ORT

New technology for diagnosing lung cancer LMH Health Foundation used donor funds toward the purchase of a bronchoscope for LMH Pulmonology. Endobronchial ultrasound is the standard of care for lung cancer diagnoses and staging, and this new equipment allows patients to remain at LMH Health for care, instead of being transferred to another health system. The ultrasound also makes the sampling procedure safer, because physicians can directly visualize where they are taking the biopsy.

Rock the Block – Kick Cancer 2018 Our annual oncology fundraiser and cancer survivor celebration was a hit. More than 600 community members, LMH Health employees and volunteers came together in support of our community’s cancer survivors. Proceeds from this year’s Rock the Block – Kick Cancer event will support cancer prevention and screening for patients who might not otherwise be able to afford it and provide funding for needs within LMH Health Oncology. “Kristin’s mother was a breast cancer survivor, and my father was also a cancer survivor,” said Greg Maurer. He and his wife, Kristin, hosted the annual event at Dale Willey Automotive. “We partner with and invest in LMH Health because we believe that this hospital can make a real difference in our community.”

New LMH Health East clinic largely funded by LMH Health Foundation In September 2018, LMH Health announced a new medical clinic serving the residents of East Lawrence and beyond. LMH Health East Heights Family Care, which is largely funded through private gifts through LMH Health Foundation, will be located conveniently in the Independence, Inc., building near 20th Street and Haskell Avenue. Donors gave more than $150,000 in funding for the clinic, including a gift from Dan Schriner and Sally Hare-Schriner. LMH Health East Heights Family Care is anticipated to open in spring 2019.

“We have been thrilled to see East Lawrence grow over the past many years,” Schriner said. “But, help is needed. That’s why we have decided to direct our philanthropic support to better the lives of people right here in our own community. This East Lawrence facility is approachable and welcoming, and it will be very meaningful to thousands of people.” Philanthropic partnerships, as well as those with community organizations such as Independence, Inc., ensure LMH Health can improve lives by providing access to healthcare across Lawrence and the surrounding communities. “LMH Health was born out of an honorable cause and a belief that all people deserve a place of safety, dignity and comfort in which to receive health care,” said Jason Hoover, LMH Health Foundation Board President. “Donors help LMH Health carry this commitment forward every day.”

Scholarships Jeff and Mary Weinberg and the Jedel Family Foundation gave a generous gift to create the Jeff & Mary Weinberg Awards for Nursing Professional Development at LMH Health. As educators themselves, the Weinbergs felt compelled to support education at the hospital. These awards recognize the critical importance of continuing education in nursing and will provide LMH Health nurses both the chance to attend seminars and the opportunity to share their experiences with their colleagues upon their return. “Over many years, our family has benefited from extraordinary care at LMH Health,” Jeff Weinberg said. “LMH Health provides so much to the people who live in the Lawrence area, and we are pleased to support these efforts in any way that we can.”

Message from Rebecca What a remarkable year! Thanks to your exceptional generosity, LMH Health Foundation provided a record-breaking $3.5 million of philanthropic support to LMH Health patients, programs and initiatives in 2018. From the renovated heart catheterization lab to the new LMH Health East Heights Family Care Clinic, your contributions make a difference for the members of our community every single day.

Rebecca Smith

As we celebrate our 50th anniversary this year, we gratefully look back on the support you and so many others have provided to our community hospital. And, as we look ahead to 2019 and beyond, we pledge to find new and innovative ways to connect with you, our most important stakeholders. Rooted in the thoughtful example of philanthropist Elizabeth Watkins, LMH Health Foundation provides a margin of excellence for LMH Health, ensuring an ever-increasing quality of care for all. Thank you for your generosity, your vision, and most importantly, your partnership, in this transformative endeavor. Cheers!

Rebecca Smith, LMH Health Foundation Executive Director
