Lawrence couple makes $1 million challenge gift for LMH Health’s patient-centered technology initiative Sue and Dana Anderson have made a $1 million challenge gift to LMH Health for new technology that will benefit surgical and heart patients. The Andersons hope their gift — which is one of the largest philanthropic gifts that the hospital has ever received — will spark other donors to support: • A new Mako robotic arm for performing partial and total knee replacements, as well as total hip replacements. • Two new da Vinci robotic surgical systems to replace the da Vinci

In the midst of the COVID-19 healthcare crisis, local community members are coming together to support LMH Health employees and patients. Over the past few months, LMH Health has seen an outpouring of local support, including monetary donations and supplies like masks and gloves. Jeff and Mary Weinberg, longtime Lawrence community members, recently made a generous donation to the CARE Fund at LMH Health Foundation, which provides financial support to LMH Health employees during crisis situations. The Weinbergs also provided funds to purchase a new ventilator for the hospital.

LMH Health West Campus update

The LMH Health West Campus construction is moving along as planned. This campus will enhance the delivery of medical care to our community members. It will also strengthen the hospital in ways that help sustain the mission-driven care we provide, such as charity care, community outreach and crisis care for mental health and substance use. We look forward to opening the new campus this fall!

Why I Work at LMH Health: Mardi Bowlin

Why I Give: Teresa Mulinazzi Kempf

Mardi Bowlin Patient Safety Officer, LMH Health “I spent 14 weeks as a patient at LMH Health and what it took to get me through was more than I could handle alone. The nurses painted my nails and brought me coffee. Mardi Bowlin They cared for me when I couldn’t care for myself. That’s why I’m so happy to work here and ensure other patients are cared for just as well. I look for opportunities to provide better care and ensure patient safety.”

“LMH Health has a long history of not only meeting the needs of the community, but exceeding them. This is the reason why I donate my time and treasure to LMH Health Foundation and will continue to do so in the future.”

HELP & HEALING FUND SUPPORTS LMH HEALTH CARE COORDINATION TEAM The path to wellness is different for every patient. At LMH Health, the Care Coordination team works diligently to ensure that each patient has what they need to complete their recovery after a hospital visit. The Help & Healing Fund is one important way the Care Coordination team is able to provide exceptional care for patients. In 2005, LMH Health Foundation established this fund to help any patient in need with expenses for medications, medical equipment or other necessities for healing and recovery after a hospital stay. The Help & Healing Fund originally provided up to $300 toward medicine or medical equipment, or a 30-day supply of medication, that LMH Health physicians have prescribed. In 2019, the fund was expanded to assist patients in need even further. It now supports patientneeds related to transportation, behavioral healthcare, food scarcity, legal support and expanded prescription coverage. This assistance is critical to ensure patients stay on the path to healthy living and safe healing.

For example, the Help & Healing Fund recently enabled the Care Coordination team to make the following purchases: • Bus passes so a patient could attend multiple doctor appointments and make a proper recovery. • Specialized medical equipment, like a scale that goes up to 700 pounds and speaks in multiple languages, adaptive equipment to improve a patient’s mobility and independence, or personalized medical equipment designed to prevent or minimize complications such as wraps that prevent swelling. • Several months of critical, life-sustaining medication to support a patient in a time of need. Lori Strecker, interim director of Care Coordination at LMH Health, expressed the importance of the fund in her team’s daily work with patients in need. “We are grateful for the Help & Healing Fund because it makes the difference in patients not only staying out of the hospital, but also being functional, productive and happy,” Strecker says.

Community support during the COVID-19 crisis —continued Weinberg expressed his gratitude for the physicians, nurses and other healthcare workers at LMH Health. “We hope that more community members will consider making a gift that will touch lives in ways beyond what was thought imaginable a few weeks ago,” says Weinberg. “Showing compassion for those in need is a gift that is in all of our hands to give.” Additionally, the LMH Health Medical Staff generously gifted $50,000 to the CARE Fund, which directly supports LMH Health employees in need. “LMH Health employees lift each other up during hard times, and this is an amazing example of that commitment,” says Rebecca Smith, executive director of LMH Health Foundation and VP of strategic communications for LMH Health. “We are grateful to the Medical Staff for generously giving far beyond their call of duty.”

How you can support LMH Health employees and patients MAKE A FINANCIAL GIFT Here are two ways you can make an impact for those affected by COVID-19: • Support LMH Health employees affected by the COVID-19 crisis by making a gift to the CARE Fund. • Support hospital needs such as supplies and equipment through the COVID-19 Area of Greatest Need Fund.

HOW TO MAKE A GIFT TO LMH HEALTH FOUNDATION: • Visit LMH.org/donate • Call 785-505-5005 • Mail a check to LMH Health Foundation, 316 Maine St, Lawrence, KS 66044

Patient-centered technology —continued Anderson underwent hip replacement surgery last year at LMH Health and “couldn’t be happier with the results.” He says he was inspired to make this gift by his surgeon, Dr. Adam Goodyear, who explained the benefits the orthopedic robot could provide. He and Sue were also inspired by a conversation they had with interventional cardiologist Dr. Roger Dreiling, who detailed the advantages of adding a second cath lab. LMH Health Foundation has committed to help the not-for-profit community hospital raise $3 million of the $5 million total cost to purchase the robotics and cath lab. The hospital will fund the balance. Among other things, this initiative will help ensure LMH Health patients experience: • Quicker and less painful recoveries after surgeries. • Shorter hospital stays and reduced reliance on pain medications. • The many conveniences of having surgery close to home, a benefit to them and their families and friends. • Seamless transitions to post-surgical therapy or treatment. In addition, the new upgrades will help LMH Health recruit and retain the best surgeons to provide excellent care to patients in the region.

THANK YOU!

Viola McGrew

The John McGrew family made a generous gift to establish a permanently endowed fund called the Viola McGrew Excellence in Nursing Award. This fund will recognize excellence in nursing at LMH Health, and honors his mother, Viola McGrew, who was the first woman to serve on the LMH Health Board of Trustees. The fund will provide a perpetual monetary award to quarterly recipients of the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses.

“ This is just our way of giving back.” —Barb Heeb

“People in a position to give are grateful to learn about opportunities like this,” said Dr. Jon Heeb of Lawrence Urology Specialists, who uses the da Vinci system. “If they find something they feel good about supporting, it brings them joy. Part of the reason patients have good experiences at LMH Health is due to the support our donors have provided.” Dr. Heeb and his wife, Barb, also made a charitable gift toward the technology initiative. “Jon and I have always felt very fortunate to be living and raising our family in Lawrence,” says Barb Heeb. “LMH Health has been a huge part of what has allowed us to do this, and we are grateful for the many ways this hospital and you all have supported us. This is just our way of giving back.” For additional information about LMH Health’s Patient-Centered Technology Initiative, please contact Earl Reineman at earl.reineman@lmh.org.
