Dear friends, Despite another challenging year dealing with the COVID-19 crisis, we were able to accomplish so much because of your gifts and the meaningful impact they have created within our community. Although the foundation was able to celebrate many wins in 2021, we are excitedly looking forward to our goals in 2022. Dear partners, Last year, LMH Health celebrated its 100 year anniversary. For more than a century, LMH Health has remained committed to its patients, staff and community. Thanks to you, we are truly “Here for Good,” every single day. LMH Health remains the largest safety-net provider in the region, providing millions of dollars in charitable care and financial support to ensure access to exceptional care for all, regardless of ability to pay. From last year’s successful initiative to fund a second cardiac catheterization lab to this year’s efforts to support the LMH Health Cancer Center expansion and new programs and education in health equity, we can make good on our purpose to serve our community with ever-evolving strength. tion 2021 marked the 100th anniversary of LMH Health. You helped us celebrate in a remarkable way, providing a near-record $3.8 million of philanthropic support for our community hospital. This became LMH Health Foundation’s second-most successful fundraising year in its 51-year history, made possible entirely by you — our generous donors. Your support makes a difference, every day.

Expanding the LMH Health Cancer Center The LMH Health Cancer Center serves as a regional destination for exceptional cancer care. Over the years, we have added and enhanced many patient-centered services including genetic testing, survivorship, social work, financial counseling and more. Yet, we are operating in the same space we opened with in 2000. The need for cancer care in our community continues to increase year over year. We take great pride in the compassionate care provided by our oncology team, and for the sake of our patients, their families and our providers, we must expand and update our facility. As a not-for-profit, safety-net community hospital that treats all who come in need — regardless of ability to pay — philanthropic support will play a vital role in turning this vision into a reality. Donors have already contributed more than $3.2 million toward the expansion and renovation of the LMH Health Cancer Center. Efforts to support this initiative will continue through 2022 with the LMH Health Foundation’s goal being to raise as much of the anticipated $9 to $11 million cost as possible.

Investing in patient-centered technology In early 2020, Sue and Dana Anderson made a $1 million challenge gift to LMH Health Foundation in support of new patient-centered technology, including a second heart cath lab and surgical robotic technology. The Andersons’ generous gift launched a successful $3 million fundraising campaign in support of these innovative technologies. The initiative helped LMH Health acquire two new MAKO robotic arms for performing partial and total knee replacements and total hip replacements, and two new da Vinci robotic surgical systems. Frank Marshall is one of many patients who have benefited from surgery performed with the new MAKO robotic arm, which has been proven to facilitate a shorter hospital stay, typically less pain and quicker return to function. He had both knees replaced at OrthoKansas over the past two years, but his second surgery was completed using the MAKO robotic arm. Marshall had less pain immediately after his second surgery, which allowed him to progress faster through his recovery. He’s now able to get back to doing the things he loves, including walking and playing golf. “I can’t recommend the team at OrthoKansas enough,” Marshall said. “They’re genuinely interested in you as a patient and that you have the best possible outcome. Having robotic-assisted surgery is a game changer. It’s amazing that it’s available right here in Lawrence.”

Advancing health equity Improving transportation access for seniors. Access to reliable transportation is a major social determinant of health. LMH Health Foundation provided $10,000 in donor funds to the Senior Resource Center for Douglas County to ensure that seniors in need have transportation to the center. Supporting early childhood education. The Community Children’s Center (CCC) was awarded a grant in 2021 to support development for an early childhood community center in USD 497’s Kennedy building in Lawrence. LMH Health Foundation was pleased to partner with the CCC through a $10,000 match. Legal support. LMH Health partners with the University of Kansas School of Law to provide free legal services to qualified patients who have legal needs affecting their health. Health Equity Advancement Fund. This newer fund addresses the social determinants of health through education and community partnerships. It supports the LMH Health Summer Leadership Academy (see next page) as well as educational opportunities for LMH Health employees and the community. Help & Healing Fund. This fund helps patients in need with
expenses for medications, medical equipment or other necessities for healing and recovery after a hospital stay — including transportation to follow-up appointments. In 2021, the Help & Healing Fund provided over $46,000 to more than 600 community members.
CARE Fund. Over $20,000 of support was provided to employees through the use of the CARE fund in 2021. The CARE fund helps employees in crisis with items like utility and medical bills, car repairs and holiday meals. Catch a Break Fund. Many cancer patients and survivors in the community struggle with day-to-day expenses like medications, car repairs, utilities and food. In 2021, the Catch a Break Fund assisted more than 70 individuals with $21,240 in support.

Summer Leadership Academy. In collaboration
with USD 497 and LMH Health Foundation, the LMH Health Summer Leadership Academy is a paid eight-week mentorship program introducing high school students to careers in healthcare. The Academy has a focus on students from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds in healthcare. Each student receives a donor-funded scholarship toward their college education. Nine participants were selected for the 2021 academy: Chais Chickaway, Unique Hall, LaDerrick Reeves, Ahnie Scott, Jesse Self and Zoe Symons from Lawrence High School, and Gabi Carttar, Evan Darrow and Ta’Mya Douglas from Free State High School.

LMH Health West Campus After opening in fall 2020, the new LMH Health West Campus had a successful first year serving our patients and community. The state-of-the-art outpatient healthcare facility features orthopedic care, outpatient surgery, all-in-one women’s healthcare, family medicine, physical therapy and more. The West Campus strengthens LMH Health in ways that help sustain the mission-driven care we provide, such as charity care, community outreach, and crisis care for mental health and substance abuse. Community members played a major role in funding the construction of this facility, providing over $5 million in philanthropic support.

Additional equipment for the popular Parkinson’s exercise classes offered through LMH Health Therapy Services
Period of Purple Crying program materials for all parents who have babies born at LMH Health, providing evidence-based education for the prevention of shaken baby syndrome
Vitamin D supplements for all newborns born to parents with Medicaid or parents who cannot afford it
Diabetes care kits (a glucometer, refill test strips, glucose tablets and more) for patients who cannot afford insulin administration supplies at home
