Dear friends, On behalf of the LMH Health Foundation Board of Directors, thank you for your support and generosity during a particularly challenging year. The COVID-19 crisis has affected all of us, but especially those most vulnerable in our community. Your gifts have made a direct and meaningful impact for our patients in need. As we celebrate LMH Health’s 100th anniversary this year, we gratefully look back on the support you and so many others have provided to our community hospital. It is clear that the good work that LMH Health and its clinics are able to do is because of you. Thank you for your continued generosity. It ensures that LMH Health can continue to provide exceptional care for our families, neighbors and friends, which is more important now than ever before.
Becki Dick 2020-2021 Board President LMH Health Foundation
Dear partners, LMH Health was founded 100 years ago upon the commitment to provide access for all. In giving funds to create Lawrence Memorial Hospital in 1921, local philanthropist Elizabeth Watkins stipulated that “no person shall be excluded on account of race, or physical, social or financial condition.” That commitment prevails to this day. As the largest safety-net provider in the region, LMH Health provides millions of dollars in charitable care each year. We look to this as our purpose and north star. In 2021 and beyond, we will focus on advancing health equity and inclusion in our community. Thanks to your support, we are addressing food scarcity and barriers to transportation through our Help and Healing Fund. Our Catch a Break Fund is helping cancer patients in need with utility bills and medications. And our community pantry, in partnership with Just Food and Van Go, Inc., is continually stocked with food and supplies for anyone who needs it. We could not do this without you. Thank you for strengthening your nonprofit, community hospital, and for helping us elevate healthcare for all people in Douglas County.

Focusing on Health Equity ADVANCING DIVERSITY IN HEALTHCARE The second annual LMH Health Summer Leadership Academy commenced on June 15, 2020. Offered in conjunction with Lawrence Public Schools, the six-week mentorship program provides an introduction to careers in healthcare for high school students from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds in healthcare, including people of color. The academy proceeded carefully during the COVID-19 pandemic with a hybrid experience of virtual and 2020 Summer Leadership Academy in-person activities. At the program’s conclusion, each student received a scholarship toward their college education, funded by community donations to LMH Health Foundation. Four students participated in the 2020 academy: Arie’Auna Childress, Thayu Kimori and Fiona Swaggerty of Free State High School; and Kirk Johnson of Lawrence High School.
LEADERSHIP IN HEALTH EQUITY As part of LMH Health’s commitment to better serve all populations in our community, the hospital named Erica Hill as the new director of health equity, inclusion and diversity. Hill is currently the director of finance and strategic initiatives at LMH Health Foundation and will continue to serve in that role alongside her new position. Over the past few years, she has worked to increase education and Erica Hill programming around health equity, inclusion and diversity at LMH Health and around the community. In 2021, LMH Health Foundation created the Health Equity Advancement Fund, which will support a variety of health equity initiatives at the hospital.

SUPPORTING BREAST CARE FOR ALL LMH Health issued 75 donor-funded mammogram vouchers in 2020 for patients who wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford cancer screenings. This is a new record — doubling the amount issued in 2019. Our goal is to continue growing this program and help more individuals receive this critical screening each year.
ADDRESSING FOOD SCARCITY To combat food insecurity, LMH Health’s community outreach and engagement team is leading the effort to collaborate with Just Food. LMH Health offers health screenings each month at Just Food, conducting free blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol screenings.
The community pantry on the main campus is packed with essential goods.
Additionally, the hospital is partnering with Just Food to provide food kits to patients in need. The kits include healthy items like canned tuna, apple sauce, peanut butter, protein shakes and veggie soup.
In fall 2020, LMH Health installed a community pantry on the hospital’s main campus near the emergency department. This is one of 12 essential needs pantries created by apprentice artists at Van Go, Inc., an arts-based social service agency that employs at-risk youth. Thanks to our donors, the pantry offers clothing, nonperishable foods, toiletries and information about Just Food.
“We want to reach community members when and where it is convenient for them. LMH Health’s partnership with Just Food is an important step toward addressing health equity in our community.” —Allison Koonce, Community Outreach and Engagement

Supporting patients in need with the Help and Healing Fund With guidance from physicians, LMH Health Foundation established the Help and Healing Fund in 2005 to provide medication or medical equipment for patients in need, following a hospital stay. Because of your support, the Foundation has been able to expand the scope of the Help and Healing Fund even further, including patient needs related to food scarcity, transportation and medical supplies. In 2020, the Help and Healing Fund provided assistance more than 660 times, including: • Transportation so a patient could attend doctor appointments and make a proper recovery • Healthy packs of food from Just Food for those expressing a hunger need • Specialized dressing supplies for a post-operative patient • Life-sustaining medication to support a patient during a crisis • Specialized medical equipment, including a scale that goes up to 700 pounds and speaks in several languages Lori Strecker, director of Care Coordination at LMH Health, leads the hospital’s team of social workers and case managers. She says the fund is critical for their daily work in maximizing care and recovery for all patients. “This fund helps remove some significant barriers to a patient’s recovery,” Strecker said.
“It’s so important for patients to take the medications that we prescribe. If they can’t afford their medications, they are obviously at risk. I give to the Help and Healing Fund because my donation goes directly to patients in need.” —Dr. Marc Scarbrough

Protecting our Community: COVID-19 response In the midst of the COVID-19 healthcare crisis, our community members have come together to support LMH Health employees and patients. In 2020, you helped us raise over $200,000 for COVID-19 relief. These funds and contributions of supplies have continued to provide critical support for LMH Health patients, employees and families in need. Longtime Lawrence community members Jeff and Mary Weinberg made a generous donation to the CARE Fund, which provides financial support to LMH Health employees in crisis. The Weinbergs also provided funds to purchase a new ventilator for the hospital. “Our nonprofit community hospital is exceptional — we are fortunate to have access to such an extraordinary medical care close to home,” Weinberg said. “My wife Mary and I believe that supporting LMH Health right now is critical.”

LMH Health West Campus The new LMH Health West Campus opened in September 2020. Community members played a major role in funding the construction of this new facility, providing over $5 million in philanthropic support. The state-of-the-art outpatient healthcare facility features orthopedic care, outpatient surgery, all-in-one women’s healthcare, family medicine, physical therapy and more. The West Campus will strengthen the hospital in ways that help sustain the mission-driven care it provides, such as charity care, community outreach, and crisis care for mental health and substance use.
OrthoKansas — a regional destination for progressive, multidisciplinary orthopedic and sports medicine care — is your partner for comprehensive, state-of-the-art musculoskeletal care.
The LMH Health Women’s Center is a convenient, consumer-friendly location that provides many services all in one place, including plastic surgery and menopause, pelvic floor, breast and behavioral healthcare. 9
Investing in patient-centered technology In early 2020, Sue and Dana Anderson made a $1 million challenge gift to LMH Health for new technology that will benefit surgical and heart patients. Sadly, we lost Sue to leukemia in late February 2021, but her philanthropic spirit continues to inspire us all. The Andersons made this gift — which is one of the largest philanthropic gifts that the hospital has ever received — to inspire other donors to support the following: • A new Mako robotic arm for performing partial and total knee replacements, as well as total hip replacements. • Two new da Vinci robotic surgical systems. • A second cardiac catheterization lab, commonly referred to as a heart cath lab. © SCHAUMBERG PHOTOGRAPHY
“The work our doctors do is important to our entire community,” said Dana Anderson. “Sue and I were happy to do what we could to provide them with the very best technology they need to perform at the highest level.” LMH Health Foundation has committed to help the not-for-profit community hospital raise $3 million of the $5 million total cost to purchase the robotics and cath lab. We’re proud to announce that we’ve raised over $2 million thus far toward this critical need. Gifts such as the one the Andersons have made underscore the importance of the role the community plays in making LMH Health an exceptional healthcare provider.
“People in a position to give are grateful to learn about opportunities like this. If they find something they feel good about supporting, it brings them joy. Part of the reason patients have good experiences at LMH Health is due to the support our donors have provided.” —Dr. Jon Heeb 10

We are grateful to everyone who joined us virtually for Hearts of Gold–At Home on October 17, 2020. Hosted by Bill Self, KU Men’s Basketball Coach, and Brian Hanni, the voice of the Jayhawks, the event raised over $55,000 for the LMH Health patientcentered technology initiative. Our donors and friends made it a joyful evening even when we couldn’t be together in person.
