Health reimagined: LMH Health West Campus A message from Russ Johnson, President & CEO of LMH Health LMH Health is excited about the opening of our West Campus, a facility that will dramatically enhance our organization’s overall capacity to care for the health needs of families across the region for many years in the future. The LMH Health West Campus is a regional destination for world-class healthcare across many outpatient services. With exceptional technology, innovative design and outstanding providers, it is a major investment in our community’s health and a key milestone in the LMH Health strategy for a healthy future in Douglas County, called Destination Health. The West Campus reflects four strategic elements of Destination Health: a patient-first, convenient and accessible setting; a collaborative and integrated health care approach; the latest technology and innovation; and a focus on partnerships with community organizations. Along with many project partners and donors, I am honored to introduce this incredible facility to our The LMH Health West Campus is scheduled to open in September. Out of an abundance of caution for our donors, supporters and staff, we have made the difficult decision to move the 2020 Hearts of Gold Gala to a virtual setting. While we can’t celebrate together in person this year, we are creating a virtual event like no other. Our event will support a bold new future in patient-centered technology initiatives, including robotic surgery and a second cath lab.
Celebrating Hearts of Gold — at Home — makes it possible for the entire community to join with us to further our mission of making Douglas County a destination for healthy living. Our program on October 17 will broadcast online, furthering the impact and reach for our sponsors. Additionally, all who register will be able to participate in our fundraising efforts through the live auction and fund-a-need. We’re pleased to announce that we will be joined by a special guest, Bill Self, KU men’s basketball coach. As you know, we had to cancel the Penny Jones golf tournament in September. In what’s becoming an increasingly challenging year, this decision was particularly heartbreaking. I am grateful for the support you’ve shown this amazing tournament over the past many decades, and I know we will all look forward to a return to normalcy for our hospital, our community and ourselves. In the meantime, thank you for supporting your community hospital, which is more important now than ever before. In gratitude,
health volunteers

MORE THAN WORDS Dear Mr. Johnson, Let me tell you what a satisfying experience I had last week. I heard that one of my co-workers came down with pneumonia and was being test for COVID-19. Dr. Blake Phipps said he’d authorize me to get tested at LMH if I wanted to, for my peace of mind. The same day I talked to him, I got a call from LMH to schedule the test. A time slot was available the very next day. I got the results of the test the day after that! (Negative.) It helped a lot that this could happen so fast and bring an end to my worry. Mr. Johnson, for me that positive experience is just normal with LMH. The story I tell to friends is about the day I had an outpatient surgical procedure and received such kind care from all staff members I saw. As I was getting ready to leave, I said to a staff member how much I appreciated the kindness. Her reply: “This is a happy place.” How many employeees say that about their employer? —George Wiley
Dear Mr. Johnson, I just want to take time on behalf of the Brenda Jardon family and myself to let you know how wonderful your staff has been to us. My wife, Brenda, was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney cancer 2/19. She spent 18 days in the hospital until she passed 3/15. Every person from cleaning, cafeteria, financial, oncology, palliative, urology, doctors, 3 West staff, 2nd floor cardio nurses, and the list goes on and on. They all treated us like family! My eyes are watering writing this but thank you everyone for all you do. —Don Jardon

Why I Give: Dr. Goodyear Adam M. Goodyear, MD Orthopedic Surgery “I believe very strongly in providing quality care in the community. The patient-centered technology initiative allows us to provide patients in our community with the very best in technology close to home. Patients will not have to leave Lawrence to experience the newest technology that is often times only offered at large academic centers. I appreciate the partnership between the foundation and the hospital and plan to continue to give regularly.” Dr. Goodyear

The idea of a patient-first, accessible environment is central to the design of the West Campus. For example, the new women’s center features all services a patient might need in one location. The center has 3D mammography and ultrasound equipment — and a breast nurse-navigator, breast surgeon, plastic surgeons, and OB-GYNs will be available on-site and able to work collaboratively. It will enable patients to have screening mammography, with diagnostic follow-up, consultation with a surgeon and even breast biopsy in one day when preferred. That can cut down on waiting, worry and anxiety while improving information for patients and providers. Among our state-of-the-art technology at the West Campus, the orthopedic center has surgical capabilities, robotic X-rays and a full outpatient therapy area — all immediately adjacent for patient convenience and provider efficiency and communication. The West Campus also offers dynamic exercise equipment, a sports performance area and a therapy amphitheater, accessible along the Lawrence Loop and available for free public use. Other innovations at the West Campus include self-scheduling, virtual waiting rooms, contactless payment and other technology-enabled conveniences.
The West Campus enhances LMH Health’s presence in the high-traffic, high-growth corridor in west Lawrence which also strengthens our competitive market position. It is a strategic investment that protects our outpatient service lines, enabling us to provide charitable care for generations to come. This is the foundation of our 100-year-old charitable trust and our purpose — a partner for lifelong health. Part of that purpose is to collaborate with community organizations like Bert Nash Community Health Center, DCCA and Heartland RADAC to care for patients going through a mental health or substance abuse crisis — and to partner with Just Food to make sure our patients have food to eat after leaving our campus. A re-envisioned patient experience in Douglas County is the goal of the West Campus. Our vision for LMH Health in 2027 is one of a nationally recognized, top-performing, independent community hospital. We aspire to be the state’s premier community hospital and a model for the country. All the planning, designing and work of these efforts is aimed at serving members of our community with compassion and expertise wherever they need us — at the new West Campus and south clinic, our Maine Street Campus and the other 10+ locations of service across Douglas County and beyond.
SUMMER LEADERSHIP ACADEMY The second annual LMH Health Summer Leadership Academy commenced June 15. Offered in conjunction with Lawrence Public Schools, the six-week mentorship program offers an introduction to careers in healthcare for high school students from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds in health care, including people of color. The academy proceeded carefully during the COVID-19 pandemic with a hybrid experience of virtual and in-person activities. At the conclusion of the program, each of the students received a $1,000 scholarship toward their college education, funded by community donations to the LMH Health Foundation. Four students participated in the academy this year: Arie’Auna Childress, Thayu Kimori and Fiona Swaggerty of Free State High School, and Kirk Johnson of Lawrence HIgh School.

UPDATE: BEHAVIORAL CRISIS CENTER LMH Health is working with community behavioral health partners, including Bert Nash Community Mental Health Center, Heartland RADAC, Heartland FQHC and DCCCA, to develop The Treatment and Recovery Campus of Douglas County. This campus will be located immediately adjacent to Bert Nash Community Mental Health Center and across the street from LMH Health’s Maine Street Campus. It will provide buildings and services for individuals with serious mental illness and substance abuse disorders, including a 14-bed crisis center and transitional housing. “LMH Health is dedicated to working with our valuable community behavioral health partners to ensure our families, neighbors and friends have access to the right type of crisis services when they need them, and that they engage with these services in the most appropriate and least restrictive settings,” says Derrick Hurst, director of the LMH Health Integrated Crisis Team. Through our Integrated Crisis Team, LMH Health is already collaborating with Douglas County and several area agencies to connect residents with appropriate services. The hospital’s new crisis rooms in the Emergency Department were made possible by donor support. RENDERING COURTESY OF TREANOR ARCHITECTS
