LMH Health Foundation celebrates 50 years throughout 2019
The LMH Health West Campus, rendered here, is estimated to open summer 2020.
LMH Health Foundation receives largest gift to date LMH Health Foundation has been awarded a $2 million grant from the Kansas City-based Sunderland Foundation to support the LMH Health West Campus expansion. This is the largest gift in LMH Health Foundation history. The new, state-of-the-art facility will have a strong emphasis on outpatient services, including family and internal medicine, orthopedic and sports medicine, physical therapy, and women’s health services. It also will include outpatient surgical capabilities. The campus will be near Kansas Highway 10 and Rock Chalk Park in Lawrence. “This gift for the new LMH Health West Campus is an acknowledgement of how important the project is,” says Earl Reineman, major and planned gifts manager for LMH Health Foundation. “The Sunderland Foundation recognizes that the LMH Health West Campus will greatly enhance the delivery of medical care to the people we serve. But they also recognize that it will strengthen the hospital in ways that help sustain the missiondriven care we provide, such as charity care, community outreach and crisis care for mental health and substance use.” —continued inside
At its annual meeting on Feb. 28, LMH Health Foundation kicked off its 50th anniversary celebration, during which the foundation will honor 50 years of community and philanthropic support for LMH Health. As part of the continuing celebration, the foundation will host two upcoming events. First, the LMH Health Foundation 50th anniversary celebration will be held June 22 at the Forum at KU’s Burge Union. The 50th anniversary celebration promises to be a fun, 1969-themed bash, complete with ’60s- and ’70s-era décor and live music. You can reserve a table for eight guests for $1969. Individual tickets are available for $250. Please contact Amy Addington at (785) 505-5005 or Amy.Addington@LMH.org to reserve your spot. Our next special event celebrates the women philanthropists who have built our community through the years. More information will be available soon — follow LMH Health social media for updates.

LMH Health partners with Just Food to address food insecurity As LMH Health works to address social determinants of health in our community, a major focus is food insecurity — the state of being without reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food. To combat food insecurity, LMH Health’s community outreach and engagement team is leading the effort to collaborate with Just Food, a local non-profit organization that secures food and distributes it to partner agencies and Douglas County residents. This collaboration is happening in two ways. First, LMH Health now offers health screenings at Just Food. Each month, LMH Health visits Just Food and conducts free blood pressure and blood sugar screenings.

Van Go artists create murals for LMH Health Emergency Department
Local artists from Van Go Inc. recently created murals to beautify the walls of three crisis rooms in LMH Health’s emergency department. Van Go is an arts-based social service agency that provides year-round after-school and summer job training programs to high-needs and underserved youth ages 14 to 24. Derrick Hurst, director of the Integrated Crisis Team at
LMH Health, was once a social worker intern at Van Go. He believes that
the hospital’s new crisis rooms, which were made possible by donor support, can be made even more comfortable. Suzanne Sherr stepped up to provide funding for this collaboration. Her gift to the foundation will cover the costs for this project. “Working with the LMH Health Foundation and through donor support, we are able to create a space that is therapeutic,” Hurst says. “Without this donor support, we could not make the space into the vision the team has for it.” Focusing on behavioral health is important to LMH Health and we’re striving to better integrate it into our system. In 2018, 4,300 people experiencing a mental health or substance abuse crisis visited the LMH Health emergency department. Through our Integrated Crisis Team, LMH Health collaborates with Douglas

County and several area agencies to help connect residents with appropriate services.
Sunderland Foundation grant —continued
LMH Health broke ground in summer 2018 for the west campus location, with the opening planned in 2020. While constructing this expansion to the west, LMH Health remains committed to its primary campus on Maine Street, which will continue to serve the entire community. The Sunderland Foundation has partnered with LMH Health previously, supporting a number of important projects including the renovated heart catheterization lab and a recent behavioral health initiative.
LMH HEALTH EMPLOYEES MAKING A DIFFERENCE LMH Health employees raised more than $70,000 in the 2019 Employee Campaign. These funds will support funds like the Help & Healing Fund, the CARE (Crisis Assistance and Resources for Employees) Fund, the Employee Education Fund, and many LMH Health departments. We thank our employees for their generosity, which shines brightly throughout LMH Health.

PERSONAL STORIES OF PHILANTHROPY
Memorial fund supports LMH Health oncology Bill and Esperanza Martin recently made a generous gift to LMH Health oncology in honor of their son, B.J. Backman, who received cancer treatment at the hospital. The Martins lived in Douglas County from 1986 to 1999. Bill Martin served as the economic development director for the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce during that time. B.J. graduated from Lawrence High School and was a dean’s honor student at the University of Kansas studying fine arts. He passed away in 2010 at 32 years old. The Martins expressed gratitude for B.J.’s treatment at LMH Health. “We’ve contributed to the LMH Health Foundation every year since B.J. got sick,” says Bill. “As we retired, we had the opportunity to make a larger gift. We really

Foundation backs Ostomy Support Group Candice Lewis, wound and ostomy care coordinator at LMH Health, founded an Ostomy Support Group at LMH Health. The purpose of the group is to help patients and their families learn more about ostomies by talking with experts and with people who have had ostomy surgery. An ostomy, which is a surgical procedure during which an opening is created in a person’s body for the discharge of body wastes, can be permanent or temporary. The waste is collected in a pouch that must be drained or changed. People need ostomies for many reasons, including injuries to their colon, colon cancer, infection in their abdomen, blockage in their lower bowel, Crohn’s disease, inflammatory bowel disease or diverticulitis.
Lewis knows it takes time to adjust to the idea of having an ostomy, as well as to life after an ostomy. So she created this group to bring patients and their caregivers together with other people Candice Lewis who know first hand about ostomy. Meetings will feature guest speakers, including surgeons, therapists, dieticians, pharmacists, ostomy care representatives and nurses. Topics will include dehydration, hernias and ostomy accessories. “I want people to come and look positively on life after an ostomy,” Lewis says. “I want to make sure the mind,
body and soul of the patient are safe and satisfied. I am just excited to offer encouragement to those who attend the ostomy group and to let them know that life doesn’t stop after getting an ostomy.” LMH Health Foundation is providing funding for this support group. We are grateful to our donors, who help make this possible through unrestricted gifts.
Join the Ostomy Support Group on the second Thursday of each month from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in conference room D-North, on the lower level of LMH Health. Please enter the hospital through the Arkansas Street doors off the circle drive.
