The superordinary

Context Study

My project focuses on the links we make from perception to understand what is normal. In my sketchbook I deduced that ‘ordinary’ was the ideal, a state that we find perfect, in that it is not considered out of place or in any way special.

My final outcome is part of a idea of distorting perception. We rely on perception to guage our reality and hence it is vital to our understanding of the ordinary.

I choose to distort glasses as they are perceived to be used for improving vision, as a cure for a type of perception error.

My final outcome is a designed pair of glasses that allow the user to be change their perception and expereince a visual effect that could change the way they look at things or interpret things. It can be modified by using different lenses that can be slid into place to block out a certian area and leave an opening that vastly changes the perception of the viewer.

I also looked into other methods of sensory alteration and deception. Although I would have liked to had progressed to develop an entire set of augmented senses I only found the hearing sense to be managable to distort. I created some basic sound reducting earphones that block out (marginally) sound from the front.

These lenses would split up the vision, resulting in scattered reception of information.

With small central aperatures, these lenses would concentrate the vision of the user on a certain point in their visual range.

Concentrating on the peripheral, these lenses would force the user to use other clues to deduce information from the environment.

Situation 1. In a conversation between a user of the glasses with the peripheral vision lenses and the user of the audio reduction earpiece what would be the main outcomes?
