Malibongwe finding that a Tata and a Land Rover had collided, and according to witnesses both vehicles left the roadway, went up the embankment, and while airborne collided with the base of a concrete signboard. The driver of the Land Rover was pulled out of the vehicle by members of the public, and despite the serious damage to the vehicle miraculously was still alive. Paramedics assessed the scene finding that two adults and two children had been injured in the collision. The drivers of both vehicles sustained critical injuries including spine, chest, and abdominal injuries. Fortunately the children only sustained minor injuries. Advanced Life Support was initiated on the two drivers. Once stabilised all patients were transported to a nearby hospital for further management.

Zuma: Don’t think like an african President Jacob Zuma should withdraw his statement that South Africans should not think like Africans when it comes to e-tolls, DA spokesman Mmusi Maimane said on Tuesday. “The president was saying we must welcome e-tolls and pay up because new freeways have been built in Johannesburg. What the president doesn’t realise is Africa is actually developing at a faster pace than he suggests,” he said. “Many governments in African countries have adopted investorfriendly policies that create jobs.

while speaking at the Gauteng Manifesto Forum at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg on Monday. Zuma said there was still an opportunity to discuss the e-tolling system around Johannesburg if there was a need for clarification, EyeWitness News reported. According to the report, Zuma said the roads would be tolled and workers who could afford and maintain a car would be able to pay e-tolls, and the rest of the people could use public transport.

President Jacob Zuma They are not burdening citizens with double-taxation though an expensive e-tolling system.” Maimane was responding to a comment Zuma made

“We can’t think like Africans, in Africa, generally. We are in Johannesburg, this is Johannesburg. It’s not some national road in Malawi.” Maimane said Zuma should apologise and withdraw these “insulting remarks” and said people were not backward when they said they could not afford e-tolls. He said Zuma’s claim that working class people could afford e-tolls was false because people could not afford to pay an extra R400 a month to travel between Soweto and Midrand.

“Instead of insulting South Africans by saying we are backward when we oppose e-tolls, we should get rid of this backward and expensive tolling system,” he said. The Supreme Court of Appeal dismissed an Opposition to Urban Tolling Alliance (Outa) appeal against the implementation of e-tolls by the SA National Roads Agency Limited on October 9. On Friday, Outa announced that it would not continue its appeal against the ruling because of a lack of money. - Sapa

Brown hyeanas in suburbia In the past few weeks there have been several reports of Brown Hyaenas in and around Johannesburg. The vast majority of the time these reports have been welcomed by the public with awe and enthusiasm, but there have also been expressions of concern and fear, which are not unexpected as most people are not familiar with these animals. This week’s incident, where a Brown Hyaena had lost its way in the Randburg Central Business District in Johannesburg is unusual because the species prefers secluded, quiet areas and was likely driven into the CBD in a confused effort to escape the heavily populated area in which it found itself wandering. Over a period of two days, conservation organisations like the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT), the NSPCA and FREEME were trying to locate and monitor the animals movements and to work with the public in ensuring both their, and the animals’ safety and welfare. The animal, a young female, was subsequently darted in Randburg and taken to the Johannesburg Zoo. She had injured her paws and will be

treated at the Zoo and kept there until a suitable release site can be found. Funding also needs to be sourced for a satellite collar to fit to her so that her post-release movements can be monitored. A few facts on Brown Hyaenas: ¡ Brown Hyaenas have been occasionally sighted in suburbia for many years. There was a Brown Hyaena shot on Allen?s Nek in Roodepoort over 20 years ago and a Brown Hyaena was caught near Gilooleys Interchange more than 15 years ago. ¡ Brown Hyaenas are scavengers and eat mostly carrion. They will also eat eggs, fruit, insects and small mammals such as rodents. ¡ The do not pose a threat to humans or pets as they are shy and elusive. ¡ They live in small clans but forage alone and can move up to 60km in one evening in search of food. ¡ Brown Hyaenas can exist in an urban environment and go undetected for long periods of time. They can coexist with humans on the urban edge and this could become more and more common as humanity encroaches on their habitat. ¡Brown Hyaenas are classified as Near Threatened, are

protected by law and permits are required to trap, handle, transport or destroy them. Key threats to their survival include: killing as ?problem animals?, traditional medicine trade and poisoning. What to do if there are Brown Hyaenas in your neighbourhood: ¡ Do not harass or chase them. ¡ You do not need to worry about your safety as they will take pains to avoid you. ¡ Do not feed them or leave food out for them to access. ¡ Do not shoot, poison, trap or injure them. Gautrain proposes seven new rapid rail routes Johannesburg Seven new rail routes have been proposed in an effort to encourage public transport usage in Gauteng, transport MEC Ismail Vadi said on Thursday. The proposed routes were part of the province’s Integrated Transport Master Plan (ITMP25), with the rail system being the backbone of the province’s transport network, Vadi said. The proposed routes were prioritised according to predicted volumes of commuters

throughout the province. They would connect the following places: * Sandton to Honeydew, via Randburg; * Ruimsig to Samrand via Cosmo City, Fourways, Sunninghill and Blue Hills; * Samrand to Tshwane East via Irene; * Rhodesfield to Boksburg via East Rand Mall; * Westgate (JHB CBD) to Park Station; * Naledi (Soweto) to Ruimsig via Roodepoort; * Tshwane East to Mamelodi.

Vadi said this was a draft plan open to public comment. “It is my intention to take the ITMP25 to the provincial cabinet quite soon, Vadi said. It was unclear which parts of the expansions would be done by Gautrain and which by the Passenger Rail Agency of SA All transport systems were working together in order to improve transport in the whole of Gauteng. The proposed ITMP25 plan was unveiled in August. It is yet to be approved by Gauteng’s cabinet. Sapa

Finance Tips With Cindy Bramhall

HOME RESCUE With the current tough economic situation, ie fuel hikes and the overall increase in the cost of living, many South Africans are struggling to pay their bonds. So I thought it would be a good time to discuss the option of using a Finance company to assist you when you are in danger of losing your home. This facility is aimed at those who are • in arrears with their bond repayments • need to release equity from their homes to settle debts • about to have their homes repossessed by the bank • are under Administration or bankrupt • about to have their homes auctioned • facing foreclosure • needing a quick home sale Financiers can do this with the help of a group of investors that will buy your home at a fair price but not less than your outstanding bond, and

will afford you the chance to re-purchase the house at the same / agreed price within 6-12 months. You are allowed to remain in your home while you settle debts debts, clear your bad credit record etc All activities are drawn up by attorneys involved with normal bond registrations and property transfers for banks. Home Rescue has the following advantages: • You get to stay in your home, ie no need to uproot your family • You can settle debt from the available equity released • You have the option to repurchase your property within 12 months (negotiable) • There is the option to continue to pay rent - there is no obligation to buy back your home • No need to pay rent which improves your cash flow (negotiable) • It avoids home repossession and financial ruin

• Relief from a stressful situation • Upfront costs are disclosed - there are no surprises • Keeps your name off ITC Note - every Home Rescue transaction differs, and as such the terms are negotiated between the parties. If you, or anyone you know could do with assistance with Home Rescue, please call Cindy @ Genrand Sandton for a free consultation 076 174 9656 or 011 083 9009

Groundbreaking device launched in northgate The continent's premier advanced technology trade show, Mediatech Africa, takes place at the Coca-Cola Dome in Northgate, Johannesburg ... Zimele Broadcasting Services showcased the Simple R slomo tv, the smallest professional multichannel recording and replay system, at this year’s Mediatech Africa. This was the first time the product was shown in Africa. There was overwhelming interest in the device that is just 1U in size and which weighs approximately 4.5kg. The slomo tv is a multi-channel recording, slow motion / instant replay and sports refereeing device. Its features comprise three channels in, two channels out dissolvable / simultaneous search on all three channels with a recording capability of 33 hours HD video on the internal SSD Drive (optional up to 125 hours). “The slomo tv was originally developed for refereeing purposes for ice hockey in Russia and is adaptable to any live sport event. Slomo tv replay is necessary when referees have to make decisions to determine scores,” said Casper Klopper, CEO

of Zimele Broadcasting Services (Pty) Ltd. “We decided to bring slomo tv to the South African market because, as a system integrator, we see the need for new and innovative solutions.” A representative of slomo tv commented that although there are some other established players in the market, slomo tv’s technology is newer and easier to handle. According to him the device has more functions and costs significantly less than its competitors. Kloppers said: “Slomo tv is ideal for emerging markets and fits like a hand in a glove in markets with cost restraints.” Apart from being much lighter than its traditional counterparts that weigh in at 40kg, slomo tv uses SSD drives which makes it more robust and super fast. “It offers a wide range of multi-channel recording and replay systems for any need of the modern broadcaster, all at very competitive pricing,” concluded Klopper. Slomo tv made its international debut at IBC in Amsterdam last year and was heralded as a ground-breaking device.
