Graduates of Jesuit teacher preparation programs are often more comfortable in collaborating with families, differentiating instruction, building classroom communities, working productively with school colleagues and conducting diverse classroom assessments than other new teachers nationally. Our programs also reinforce students’ commitments to social justice, high expectations for all students and using pedagogy that is validating and affirming. The experiences in Jesuit teacher preparation programs provide the ethical, moral and technical foundation to help teachers be advocates for all children.

URBAN EDUCATION LEARNING COLLABORATIVE “By far the most important factor in the success or failure of any school…is simply attracting the best educated, most exciting young people into urban schools and keeping them there.” + Jonathan Kozol / Writer, educator, activist

PROGRAM BENEFITS The UELC is a four-year undergraduate experience that awards a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in education degree with Missouri teacher certification. You can also choose a certification pathway based on your area of interest.

COMMUNITY OF LEARNERS AT SLU + FOCUSED LEARNING IN AN URBAN ENVIRONMENT

+ EVENTS During monthly events, you will have the opportunity to meet and network with key stakeholders in the area. Urban Education Brown Bag Lunches will be held each month during the academic school year. These hour-long sessions will feature discussions with community stakeholders and local policymakers. The UELC also coordinates Teaching St. Louis, a series sponsored by SLU’s School of Education designed to broaden your understanding of how to teach complex issues of race, class and inequity in our community. For more information, visit slu.edu/teachingstl.

By enrolling in special sections of core education courses focused on teaching and learning in urban settings, you will explore topics such as urban youth development, leadership in urban schools and communities, and research-based instructional strategies for urban students. The UELC will serve as a site for professional as well as personal growth through conversations, friendships and networking opportunities. Coursework will be supplemented by fieldwork in partner urban school districts in St. Louis and SLU-sponsored charter schools. Experienced and effective mentors will offer insights into challenges and opportunities in urban schooling.

+ INTENSE COHORTS

If you are passionate about making a real change in the lives of children and helping them reach their full potential, a career in education is for you.

While in your UELC cohort, you will work directly with teachers and school leaders in urban early elementary, middle and high school settings. Faculty at these schools help steer coursework in the UELC course sequence to meet the unique social, cultural, political and economic needs found at these schools and surrounding neighborhoods.

Saint Louis University’s School of Education is committed to the preparation of students to be reflective practitioners and leaders in partnership with and for the human community. The school embraces innovative learning through commitments to diversity
