In order to better serve these students, the Student Success Center has an academic coach who works specifically with students who have a diagnosis of ADHD. The program provides support for the development of skills, strategies and beliefs needed to manage ADHD in conjunction with college. Students are also given information about the wide range of resources available to support their success at Saint Louis University.

Major Exploration Academic Advising Whether you are trying to decide between two majors, are in the deciding process or you’re looking to find the best fit, the staff in the major exploration academic advising office is here to guide you through your decision-making process. Located within the Student Success Center, major exploration provides a supportive environment to consider the many exciting options for degree programs at SLU.

BENEFITS OF MAJOR EXPLORATION ACADEMIC ADVISING While advised in major exploration, you focus on gaining knowledge in three categories that are critical to making a decision about a major: + Self-Knowledge – You will reflect to identify your interests, values and skills. + Educational Knowledge – You will learn about the approximately 100 areas of study offered at SLU. + Occupational Knowledge – You will learn about careers that match your interests and begin to plan for the transition from earning a degree into the careers beyond graduation.

PROGRAM STRUCTURE By gathering information and reflecting on experiences, you are supported in your decision-making development guided by your academic advisor. Academic advisors work with you to keep you focused on the decision-making process and to help you decide on a major by the end of your freshmen year. + High-touch approach. As a result of purposefully low student-to-advisor ratios, major exploration allows for more interaction between you and your academic advisor. You are expected to have a minimum of three interactions per semester with your advisor.

Tutoring and Supplemental Instruction Located within the Student Success Center, the mission of tutoring and Supplemental Instruction (SI) is to foster a supportive environment where students feel empowered to identify and achieve their academic goals.

TUTORING VERSUS SUPPLEMENTAL INSTRUCTION Tutoring is most commonly an interaction between the tutor and one student. Supplemental Instruction (SI), on the other hand, is an internationally recognized program where a tutor—also known as an SI leader—attends lectures with the students and then holds approximately three one-hour sessions for small groups of students throughout the week. Both tutoring and SI are available for a wide range of courses six days a week.

TUTORS AND SUPPLEMENTAL INSTRUCTION LEADERS Tutors and SI leaders are undergraduate students who have taken and excelled in the courses for which they tutor. These highly qualified, peer tutors and SI leaders are available to mentor you in effective problem solving, critical thinking and study skills. You can expect the following from your tutor and SI leader: + A solid understanding of subject matter for which you are requesting additional assistance. + Encouragement during the learning process. + Insight to help you come to the correct conclusion independently. + Patience in times of frustration and difficulty. + Troubleshooting ability to find gaps in information previously learned and a willingness to fill those gaps so that educational growth may occur. + Understanding and acceptance. + Explanation of concepts and course material that is catered to your individual learning style. + Knowledge of a variety of campus resources.

PROGRAM BENEFITS We can assist you with: + Academic success + Time management + Organization + Note-taking strategies

+ Study skills + Test-taking strategies + Improving communication with instructors

PREPARATION With one-on-one tutoring sessions, you are encouraged to set up appointments early in the semester. As you prepare for your tutoring session, you should spend time prior to your appointment looking through course material or homework and formulating questions. The tutors are trained to help you think through the questions you have prepared, and when possible, lead you towards solving your own problems. Similar to one-on-one tutoring, it is recommended that you come to SI sessions with questions about the class material; however, if you don’t have specific questions, that is perfectly fine. Since the SI leader will be reviewing material previously taught in class, you will be given opportunities to generate and ask questions during the session.

CONTACT US We encourage you to visit the Student Success Center early in your college career to learn how our staff can support you on your road to success. Although you must schedule an appointment to meet with a tutor, appointments are not necessary for Supplemental Instruction. SI sessions are available for any student enrolled in the course, even if the SI leader is not sitting in your class. To make an appointment, you can visit the Student Success Center in the Busch Student Center, Suite 331 or the Medical Center in the School of Nursing building, Suite 114. In addition, appointments can also be made through SLU Appointments under your mySLU account or by calling 314-977-3484. “University writing services has holistically improved my writing process. I met multiple times with a consultant where we brainstormed to find an exciting introduction, outlined the piece as a whole and reviewed the paper’s structure and mechanics.
