VETERAN
THE GROUP THAT STARTED THE SLU STUDENT VETERANS ASSOCIATION CHAPTER HAD THE COMMON GOAL OF UNITING VETERANS WHO ARE COMING HOME. SVA IS A WAY FOR VETERAN STUDENTS TO JOIN IN THE SLU ATMOSPHERE AND A WAY FOR STUDENT VETERANS TO SUPPORT EACH OTHER.
THE JESUIT MISSION IS ‘MEN AND WOMEN FOR OTHERS’ AND THAT REALLY COMES OUT IN THE MEDICAL SCHOOL. FROM THE DEAN TO THE PROFESSORS, EVERYONE IS FOCUSED ON MAKING US BETTER PEOPLE AND HELPING WITH OUR CAREER GOALS.
I THINK THE PEOPLE MAKE THE CAMPUS. THE PEOPLE AND THE PROFESSORS HERE REALLY CARE. MY PROFESSORS HELP ME SEE THE BIG PICTURE AND HOW WHAT I’M LEARNING WILL HELP ME IN LIFE AFTER GRADUATION.
ALL OF MY INSTRUCTORS HAVE BEEN REALLY GREAT AT KEEPING ME IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION WITH MY STUDIES AND HELPING ME BECOME A BETTER WRITER. WRITING SKILLS WERE SOMETHING I WAS LACKING BEFORE I CAME TO SLU, AND NOW THEY’VE COME A LONG WAY.
AFTER SERVING IN THE MILITARY, IT WAS HARD FOR ME TO TRANSITION INTO CIVILIAN LIFE. I WAS USED TO STRUCTURE AND CONSTANT PURPOSE. VOLUNTEERING WITH MISSION CONTINUES IS GREAT BECAUSE I FEEL LIKE I’M BACK TO HELPING OTHERS, JUST IN A DIFFERENT UNIFORM.

Having attended Catholic school since kindergarten, John knew that he wanted to continue his education and pursue his doctoral degree at a university that shared his values. He was able to do so through the U.S. Navy’s Health Professions Scholarship Program and Saint Louis University School of Medicine.
Abby has always had a penchant for order and a dream of flying. She wasn’t sure how she was going to manage the expense of an aviation degree until a friend told her about ROTC, which seemed like a perfect fit for her personality. Abby applied, interviewed and received a full scholarship to Saint Louis University through ROTC, where she is majoring in aviation management and working on her private pilot license.
Wade is a combat veteran, having served two tours to Iraq and one to Afghanistan. He received two Combat Action ribbons and a Purple Heart. After completing his tours, Wade successfully transitioned to higher education with the assistance of the Post 9/11 GI Bill tuition benefits, and is working on his undergraduate degree in history. He plans to apply for an internship this fall in defense mapping for the federal government.
Tamyka served as a medic in the Army for seven years, and knew that she wanted to continue in the health care field, but wasn’t exactly sure how until she discovered the health management program offered by Saint Louis University’s School of Public Health. Nearing graduation, she’s looking forward to working in the public health field, and grateful for the Post 9/11 GI benefits that made it possible for her to afford her education. Tamyka is involved in several volunteer organizations, including Mission Continues, which awards community service fellowships to post–9/11 veterans.
Justin had been out of school for seven years before starting at SLU. He originally doubted his ability to blend in on campus with students who went straight from high school to college, but succeeded in the transition to college life. Justin is the current president of the Student Veterans Association (SVA) chapter on SLU’s campus. He became involved with the SVA to help other veterans succeed on campus, and plans to continue both his involvement in the SVA and his education through graduate school at SLU.
SLU’s School of Medicine sends their military students to veterans’ hospitals for some of their rotations. John is looking forward to working with patients who have served our country.
