Representative Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton is the complete public interest lawyer. She has been a leading civil liberties attorney and public official, chair of two government agencies, a law professor, a public commentator on issues of equal justice, and, most recently, the congressional representative for the people of the District of Columbia. Now in her 11th term, she has transformed the post into a powerful force for the people of the District. Recently she achieved the breakthrough of two centuries by getting enough votes to pass the D.C. House Voting Rights Act that would be law today except for a dangerous gun amendment that has delayed this achievement. She was the key architect of an historic bipartisan bill that made higher education in U.S. public colleges and universities available at in-state rates to D.C. residents. She is chair of a major economic development subcommittee in the House that is responsible for much of the development and prosperity of the District today. As a law student at Yale, she traveled to the Mississippi Delta to work in the freedom summers of the civil rights movement. Norton has maintained her ties to the law, teaching a class on legislation and law-making every year. Rep. Norton says that the class “gives my brain the exercise a lawyer needs, and my Georgetown students always offer the challenges a Congresswoman should have.”
