n behalf of the staff, artists, photographers, designers, writers and others who have helped to make Passport Gateway Magazine the area’s most popular visitor guide since 1995, we invite you to join the millions of readers who have used our magazine to find the very best places to eat, shop and play in Paradise on the Pacific, where the unique east to west, southern facing coastal orientation creates the Mediterraneanlike abundance of sunshine, moderate temperatures and dazzling beauty that attracts more than six million annual visitors to this seaside sanctuary commonly called the American Riviera. This is the place that was claimed by Spain in 1542, when the first European to set foot on the California coast was greeted by gift-bearing Chumash Indians who had thrived here for thousands of years and are today 6
one of the region’s largest employers and philanthropists. This was the moviemaking capital of the world in the early 20th Century. This is where Charlie Chaplin built a hotel and Jimmy Cagney owned a wharf; where Laurence Olivier married Vivien Leigh and John & Jackie Kennedy honeymooned; where miles of palm lined beaches frame a moving canvass of white sailboats on crisp blue seas and magnificent sunsets silhouette
surround one of California’s most popular Spanish Missions; where you’re 92 miles north of Los Angeles, 332 miles south of San Francisco, and, hopefully, far enough from home to become accustomed to a more relaxed, carefree lifestyle as you explore the sun-drenched beaches, picturesque harbor, gourmet restaurants, shopping treasures, museums, galleries, award-winning wineries and historical sites. This is also the place where you’ll find charming sidewalk cafes and worldclass restaurants; and, where you’ll enjoy shopping adventures at first-class national and international stores as well as our eclectic mix of locally owned shops, boutiques and galleries.
This is the home of six Nobel Prize winners; media celebrities Oprah Winfrey, Laura Schlessinger and Dennis Miller; entertainers Jeff Bridges, Carol Burnett, Kevin Costner, Bo Derek, Kirk Douglas, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Dennis Franz, Tab Hunter, Kathy Ireland, Michael Keaton, Cheryl Ladd, Christopher Lloyd, Rob Lowe, Eva Marie Saint and Steve Martin; singers and songwriters Jeff Barry, Jackson Browne, Christopher Cross, David Crosby, Barry DeVorzon, Milt Larsen, Bruce Johnston, Kenny Loggins, Jim Messina, Peter Noone and Glen Phillips; TV/film producers and directors Bruce Brown, Chris Carter, Tom Pollock, Ivan Reitman, Joel Schumacher, Dick Wolf and Robert Zemeckis; best-selling authors Jack Canfield and Sue Grafton; sports legends Jimmy Connors, Tommy Curren, Chuck Liddell; business titans Gene Montesano, Charlie Munger, Paul Orfalea, Fred Siegal, Herb Simon and Ty Warner; and, all of the rest of us who live, work and play in one of the world’s favorite destinations. Welcome to paradise. We’re glad you’re here. - Betty Carroll 7

The Best Places to Find the Perfect Gifts!
Holiday shopping in Santa Barbara is a rewarding experience and there’s no greater reward than discovering the eclectic mix of locally owned boutiques, galleries and shops that are some of the best places to find the perfect gifts in paradise on the pacific. We’ll begin at Loreto Plaza at the corner of State and Los Positas streets where you can enjoy a luxurious spa treatment at Qui 33 Jewels Si Bella Eco-Wellness Spa and find quality skin care products, candles, exotic scents and gift certificates for that special person on your list. Loreto Plaza is also the home of the iconic Chaucer’s Bookstore, Santa Barbara’s much-loved bookseller since 1974 where you can browse a selection of over 150,000 titles in 300 sections; and, The Golf Klub, the locals favorite retail store that offers golf apparel, balls, bags, rangefinders, gloves, golf accessories and state-of-the-art computer club fitting. From Loreto Plaza, we recommend you travel south on State Street to Downtown Santa Barbara, where you’ll find the area’s highest concentration of retail shopping treasures in the eleven blocks from Sola Street south to Highway 101 with abundant public parking off Chapala and Anacapa streets and open-air trolleys, electric shuttle buses and pedi-cabs available to help you navigate the most beautiful downtown on the California coast. As you enter the downtown area, be sure to visit Natasha, the contemporary women’s clothing boutique in Victoria Court at 1231 State Street that specializes in easy care, easy wear casual clothing in natural fabrics made in California as well as the area’s largest selection of Citron and Cutloose apparel and a wide selection of accessories, shoes, bags, jewelry and hats. And since you’re just across the street from the box office at the beautifully restored Granada Theatre at 1214 State Street, may we suggest that tickets to the State Street Ballet’s December 17th or 18th performances of The Nutcracker, the holiday family favorite set to the unforgettable music of Tchaikovsky performed with a full orchestra or the Santa Barbara Symphony’s New Years Eve Pops Concert, the best New Year’s Eve celebration on the coast with Guest Conductor Bob Bernhardt directing the perfect mix of your favorite tunes 12

I
t was the Golden Age of moviemaking and Santa Barbara was the center of the celluloid universe. From its humble beginnings in 1910 as the location for early Western thrillers, Santa Barbara quickly became the moviemaking capital of the world and the location for over 1,200 major motion pictures that were produced from 1910 to 1921. In 1913, the American Film Company converted an ostrich farm on the corner of State and Islay Streets into a movie lot and began construction of the world’s largest movie studio on the property bordered by Mission, State, Padre and Chapala Streets which was commonly referred to as the “big glass studio” by the local population. For the next 8 years, up to 14 production companies simultaneously used the “Flying A” facilities to create many of the most popular films of the period and stars like Marion Davies, Lottie Pickford and Wallace Reid kept suites in the Edgerly Arms Apartment 62 2 8
Hotel on Sola Street which was built to accommodate the burgeoning motion picture industry during the years when famous directors like D.W. Griffith and William Desmond Taylor deposited $1500 weekly paychecks in local State Street banks and entertained the rich and famous from around the world. By 1921, motion picture audiences favored films with themes that focused on life in the big city and the “Flying A” studios were moved south to Hollywood to be closer to the urban backgrounds that became the most common setting for the next era of movie-making. Ironically, the same contractor who poured the concrete for the “big glass studio” in 1913 won the contract to demolish the facilities in 1948 leaving the office building at 2012 Chapala Street which was D.W. Griffith’s private garage and the buildings at the corner of Mission and Chapala Streets that housed the “Green Room” where thousands of actors rehearsed their lines and the private dressing rooms of the first superstars of the American screen. Some remain among the few architectural reminders of Santa Barbara’s place in the history of the motion picture industry. Today, Santa Barbara’s favorable yearround climate and lush, tropical terrain bordered by mountains and ocean attracts film-makers, television producers and fashion photographers to the hundreds of historic settings that blend the architecture of the city’s past and present into idyllic, eclectic locations.

A
local favorite for 31 years, opal restaurant & bar thrives on the creative contrast between exciting innovation and comfortable tradition. As son as you step inside, you know you are in for a special experience. Sophisticated yet comfortable, opal restaurant & bar radiates a warm, friendly ambience combining the elegance of a trendy San Francisco bistro with a genuine hospitality that seems to come naturally to their well-trained staff of servers and chefs. From your first glance at the menu, it’s easy to see why opal is such a favorite, featuring eclectic California cuisine inspired by dishes from around the world and the multicultural heritage of America. Offering everything from an Herb Grilled 14 oz Ribeye Steak, to spicy authentic Paella, fresh seafood, homemade pastas & soups, deliciously imaginative salads, elegant Asian-accented appetizers, and homemade desserts, opal’s menu truly has something for every taste. If you are a wine lover, you are in for a treat at opal restaurant & bar. With its full bar and unique Martini specialties, opal is also a great place to drop in for a drink and an appetizer before a movie or a night on the town. If you need a private space for your group, opal has a separate, attractively decorated, banquet room that adjoins the main dining room, with its own sound system, kitchen and separate entrance. The philosophy of proprietors Tina Takaya and Richard Yates is simple, “People are hungry for more than just great food. We seek to create an experience that removes barriers and creates a connection between people; one that ultimately nurtures the soul as well.” With its warm and welcoming style, delicious and diverse menu, excellent wine list and full bar, all at reasonable prices, this is the kind of restaurant you can go back to again and again. Sandpiper golf CluB Extraordinary Golf Experiences & Ocean Views!
P
erched majestically on the bluffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean, just north of downtown Santa Barbara, you’ll find a true championship course known as one of the best golf facilities in California. Sandpiper Golf Club designed by William F. Bell in 1972, is an inspiring combination of challenge and beauty that was named by Golf Digest as one of the top 25 public golf courses in the country. Measuring over 7,000 yards from the back tees with a championship rating of 74.5, this par 72 course with mature, wooded fairways, undulating terrain and challenging greens attracts players of all skill levels and has tested the abilities of PGA and LPGA players alike, playing host to several professional tournaments including The PGA Tour Tournament Players Series, The LPGA Tour Santa Barbara Women’s Open and the prestigious final stage of the PGA Tour Qualifying School. While the front nine is slightly longer and more challenging than the back, the stretch of holes on the bluffs along the ocean are truly extraordinary. The 11th hole, a 224-yard par 3, drops dramatically from tee to green and offers spectacular views of the scenic Santa Barbara coast. The ocean also comes into play on the par-5 13th; this challenging hole offers a panoramic view of the coastline and the Channel Islands. “The ocean and mountain views are breathtaking and the golf course conditions are superb”, says Director of Golf, Kyle Oliver. “Our main goal at Sandpiper is to provide all of our guests with a level of service that compliments a world class golf experience”. Conveniently located just minutes from downtown and the Santa Barbara Airport off Hwy 101 at the Winchester Canyon Road exit, Sandpiper combines a tradition of championship golf and spectacular surroundings with a full range of services that include an experienced and courteous staff, ocean view practice facility, Titleist rental clubs packages, PGA instruction and an award winning golf shop. Sandpiper also offers a restaurant that serves signature breakfast, lunch, and cocktails options. For more information visit www.sandpipergolf.com 60 6 0 60

Santa Barbara Museum of Art Celebrates 75th Anniversary
T
he idea for a Santa Barbara city museum originally came from the local artist Colin Campbell Cooper. When he learned that the main post office building, erected in 1912 and abandoned for several years, was going to be sold, he proposed, in a letter published in the Santa Barbara News-Press in July of 1937, that the impressive Italianate structure should be transformed into a museum. What Cooper himself described as something of a “pipedream” came to fruition just four years later, thanks to a groundswell of support from the community and the commitment of a small, passionate army of artists and civic-minded individuals. Only after the opening date was set did Buell Hammett, the first President of the Board of Trustees, contact an astrologer to determine at exactly what time of the day the doors should open; he learned that the stars and planets would be best aligned at precisely 11:43 am on June 5, 1941. At that very moment, 1,500 junior high students led visitors into the Museum, a stream of people that did not abate for months—approximately 300 a day and more than 50,000 visitors in the first six months. Upon entering, visitors were greeted, as they have more recently, by beautiful objects from Wright Ludington’s important collection of Greek and Roman antiquities as well as a substantial number of 19th- and 20th-century drawings and watercolors. From its inception, SBMA’s permanent collection has benefited from the generosity of many individual philanthropists, who have given the Museum some of its most famous works of art. Since its opening, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art has amassed nearly 28,000 works of art in its permanent collection, including paintings, sculpture, prints, drawings, photographs, ceramics, glass, jades, bronzes, lacquer and textiles. These works represent the arts of Asia, Europe, and the Americas spanning over 5,000 years of human history. For the past 75 years, SBMA has played a vital role in the cultural and community life of Santa Barbara. The Museum’s founders were visionary individuals, and the current renovation project and resulting $50 million Imagine More capital campaign seeks to continue to extend the reach of the institution to, at once, make essential renovations and upgrades to an aging facility, while expanding the scope of SBMA’s exhibitions, programs, and place as a public forum for the arts in Santa Barbara and beyond. 62
